To-do list:

  • Rename Guttural Growler to Raspy And Tough and retool it directly (as opposed to launching a new trope) to refer to where a raspy voice is used to symbolize the character being tough, and make it a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea.

From what I saw on this site, Guttural Growler seems to have a confusing definition. It is often stated to be "character has a low, raspy voice", which isn't exactly a trope and would fit much better on things like Evil Sounds Raspy (raspy voices signifying evil characters) or Tomboyish Voice (a girl with a raspy voice to signify her as a tomboy). So I think a wick check is in order.

Here's the check (with organizing help from Yindee) and the results:

  • Gruff/Raspy voice with some context (10/50)
  • Chairs (22/50)
  • ZCE (14/50)
  • Unsure (4/50)

Solutions:
  • Create a trope where a raspy is voice is used to symbolize the character being tough. Make a male-centric example to a "Tough guy with raspy voice" example and move female examples to Tomboyish Voice. If not, we can create a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea. (though that might also need a seperate wick check for TV).
  • Rename and redefine the trope (in-line with the first solution)

And when it comes up, I have an entry that would fit...

  • Goblins in the Castle: Igor almost always speaks in a growling tone, which Fauna notes in book 2 isn't because he's angry (usually) — it's just the way he talks. He's also incredibly strong, as evidenced in the first book when he shoves aside a massive boulder.

Until next time...

If we have Evil Sounds Raspy, does that mean that Guttural Growler was intended to be the Good Counterpart to that trope? And if so, should the name reflect that?

Yeah, I was asking because I've mostly seen Guttural Growler associated with tough and abrasive heroes, though sometimes villains have it as well.

Just wanted clarification.

Evil Sounds Raspy was created in 2013, Guttural Growler in 2009, so the latter wouldn't have been defined or conceived in relation to the former.

I hooked a crowner with four options; two cover sending the retool to TLP and two cover renaming and retooling without TLP (since both were suggested in the OP), and the options for retooling with TLP and retooling without TLP both have two separate options to address whether the retool is Always Male or unisex (with female examples being moved to Tomboyish Voice if it's made Always Male).

  • Rename Guttural Growler and retool it directly (as opposed to launching a new trope) to refer to where a raspy voice is used to symbolize the character being tough, and make it a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea

I feel like Guttural Growler can also apply to more animalistic or nonhuman characters that talk in a low, raspy voice, and feel that isn't being considered. Isn't something like Inhuman Rasp more appropriate?

It's not about the gold; it's about the glory.

I hooked a crowner for name suggestions for the "raspy=tough" idea we decided to go with. I left out Inhuman Rasp because that doesn't fit the definition we went with (we went with a focus on toughness because most of the non-Chairs examples fit that description), but it could be Yarded or taken to TLP.

Calling thread in favor of renaming Guttural Growler to Raspy And Tough. A sandbox (Sandbox.Raspy And Tough) can be used to rewrite the page.

I pinned a to-do list, archived the wick check, and redirected Raspy And Tough for now.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Added some stuff Sandbox.Raspy And Tough, please modify as you see fit and some examples.

Sorry for the lateness of this. Life and laziness kinda got in the way.

Trope Repair Shop: Guttural Growler

Crown Description:

Consensus was to rename Guttural Growler and retool it to refer to where a raspy voice is used to symbolize the character being tough, and make it a unisex trope about the general "raspy=tough" idea. What should the trope's new name be?
