    Original post
The description of Gold Tooth talks about all the different meanings gold teeth can have without focusing on one specific meaning making it too broad and vague which is why, along with its chairs-y name, it has a high amount of ZCEs and the examples follow each different meaning of the one mentioned in the description.

The wick findings show that:

  • 5/50 or 10% are "gold tooth signifying villainy/evil/amorality" examples.
  • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying wealth/status" examples.
  • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying both wealth/greed + villainy" examples.
  • 34/50 or 68% are zero-context/chairs (unremarkable) examples and contextless potholes.
  • 5/50 or 10% are other unsorted examples of other varied meanings.

  • Final Verdict: The majority of the wicks are ZCEs and stray potholes which isn't surprising since the trope has a non-specific/broad name. After that, there are very few examples of the meanings gold teeth have, with villainous symbolism being in the lead with 5 examples, while the gold tooth = wealth/status and gold tooth = wealth and villainy at the same time have 3 examples each (so 6 in total). The remaining 5 wicks are unsorted examples with different meanings/contexts not fitting the previous categories and don't form a pattern of their own. This makes the trope chairs as currently written and an action needs to be taken to fix this.
  • Solutions:
    • Retool + rename the trope into Symbolic Gold Tooth to make it clear that it requires a meaning/symbolism, and make it cover either/both villainy or wealth. We have 7 examples of this excluding indexes.
    • Or send the "gold tooth = villainy/evil/gangster image" (has 5 wicks only) and "gold tooth = wealth/status" (has 3 wicks) concepts back to TLP to gather more examples and cut the trope.

Wick check:

As brought up here, Gold Tooth' description lists all the different meanings gold teeth have, making it unclear what usage it exactly is troping/describing. So, I'll check the usage of the trope and see if it has ZCEs due to its broad name or not.

Wicks checked: 50/50.

  • Quick wick check results:
    • 5/50 or 10% are "gold tooth signifying villainy/evil/amorality" examples.
    • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying wealth/status" examples.
    • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying both wealth/greed + villainy" examples.
    • 34/50 or 68% are zero-context/chairs (unremarkable) examples and contextless potholes.
    • 5/50 or 10% are other unsorted examples of other varied meanings.

Wouldn't it be easier to cut and sort all the wicks before booting up the TLP draft(s)? If I could slog through as much as I did in a couple hours, I figure the rest could be done away with in a timely fashion.

We're sandboxing the trope for gold teeth symbolizing villainy instead of sending it to TLP, since there are enough wicks to do the split right away without it being wick-starved. We just need to decide on a name. We could still wait for dewicking to finish before putting the page(s) up, though, especially because it's still to be determined whether this can be done with the trope for wealth, but deciding on a name could be done ahead of time.

For the record, I'm totally chill with doing the rest of the dewicking myself. I've turned a bunch of ZCEs into fitting examples. It's pretty fun.

I've dewicked a couple "pirate has a gold tooth" examples. Anything to do there? It wouldn't be enough for a trope, probably about three occurrences so far plus part of a pirate outfit trope description.

I like Amoral Gold Tooth. Amoral is more descriptive of an actual personality trait than "villain" and it leaves room for characters who may be Anti Villains or Ambiguously Evil to get covered. Like a shady backalley dealer could have a gold tooth to show that this chracter can't be fully trusted and isn't someone concerned with maintaining the moral high ground without them being an outright villain. They're not law abiding but not being lawful isn't the same as being a villain or even evil.

eta: Shady Gold Tooth gets that idea across too. As does Crooked Gold Tooth, which I can't decide if it's just the right amount of punny or misleading.

[up] Agreed. Some of the examples I've rounded up are for shady characters that aren't evil. I'll fix my formatting error in the morning, but I've gotten through Main/ and Chars/ thus far.

In the meantime I put the description in the sandbox and rearranged it to focus more on villainy. Does this new definition include "villain steals someone's gold tooth"? I'm thinking no but I left that paragraph there just in case.

[up] Haven't come across that yet. I've seen "villain loses gold tooth" and "someone gets gifted gold teeth to make up for the broken ones" but nothing about taking as spoils yet.

[up] Alright, the work sorting is preliminarily done. Thanks, Synch, for the categorization work! If anyone wants to go through and augment/rework stuff, be my guest. There was a lot of frankensteining text from other tropes to get context for ZCE entries.

To reiterate, not all of the ones that'd go under the proposed "Villainous Gold Tooth" are villains. Some of them are just shady.

Looks like we'll be able to handle both splits through this thread, which means we're doing another crowner after the current one (which should be able to be called very soon).

Gold Tooth of Wealth and Wealthy Gold Tooth might work as starting points, but perhaps someone else could think of something better.

As for some characters who fit the villainy trope being shady instead of full-fledged villains, Tropes Are Flexible. When TRS split Devil's Pitchfork from Prongs of Poseidon, there was discussion in that thread regarding the fact that the character in the page image (Ganondorf from The Legend of Zelda) isn't Satan despite the word "devil" being in the trope name, even though the trope is about villainous characters in general instead of just Satan (and Ganondorf has the title of Demon King anyway). (Devil's Pitchfork was on my mind because someone mentioned liking that trope's image's caption in the Entries that made you go "Lol" thread on Yack Fest, and I'm inclined to agree with that post.)

So, I saw that everything except Pantheon and Sandbox/ were dewicked, so it looks like we only have the following left to do:

  • Choose names for the two new tropes. The crowner for the final name for gold teeth signifying villainy/evil/amorality should be ready to call tomorrow, so the 31st is the earliest we'll have a name decided for the trope for gold teeth signifying wealth/status.
  • Refine the new tropes' descriptions if necessary, and move the pages to Main/.
  • Crosswick and index the pages and disambiguate the original Gold Tooth page. In the case of the Pantheon/ wicks, we can let the Pantheon thread handle whether to move the wicks to one of the two new tropes or delete them entirely.

I think the third bullet point would be the last step once it's done for both new pages. Either way, we can start work on crosswicking and indexing the villainy/evil/amorality trope as soon as the crowner is called tomorrow, so that could be worked on while we're running the crowner for deciding the name of the wealth/status trope.

[up][up]yeah Villainous Gold Tooth can work as a name if that's what the crowner goes with since it's not inaccurate, though I do worry about future example quality. One thing I've come across from wick cleaning a lot of other tropes is that often when "villain" or "evil" is the only adjective/descriptor in the title, a lot of examples just end up as low to partial context examples along the lines of "So and so is the bad guy and has/does X".note  Not an inaccurate write-up for the trope, just not the most descriptive.

It works, but it'll probs be one to keep an eye on moving forward.

[up]I recall Manly Facial Hair running into problems not long after it was salvaged from Badass Mustache and Badass Beard, so it's probably an issue of people missing the Meaningful aspect of Meaningful Appearance. At least we brought back the appearance trope thread (albeit with a significantly reduced scope) to handle that sort of problem.
