Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

This example on Compare the Meerkat seems like misuse, unless Aleksandr the meerkat also has a role on Coronation Street or something.

  • Celebrity Paradox: Nobody in Coronation Street seems to have noticed a sudden infestation of meerkats, a species native to South Africa and not Manchester, and nobody is asking whether this merits intervention by the zoo, the RSPCA, or Rentokil. (Compare The Meerkat is "sponsoring" the show, with commercials at the start and finish of each segment. These feature the lovable animals drinking in the Rovers, dining in Roy's café, and doing other cute meerkat-ish things. But in plain view in one of the most close-knit, nosy, streets in the north of England).

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I'm not sure if this one is counts as an example for Raising Dion YMMV page.

  • Draco in Leather Pants: The reveal that Pat is secretly Evil All Along did not sit well with fans who liked his nerdy personality, and would rather have seen him and Nicole get together. Not surprising, the first fanfic ever written for this series on FanFiction.Net tries to retcon this.

So several "What an Idiot" posts were recently added to Invincible (2021)'s YMMV page, and I thought I'd bring something up.

A week or so back I added the following What an Idiot examples to the same page:

  • What An Idiot: Despite being shown to be a very competent team of heroes, several members of the Guardians of the Globe grab the Idiot Ball hard during their fight with Omni-Man.
    • The first thing Red Rush does when the fight starts is shove Immortal out of the way of Omni-Man's sneak attack, saving Immortal's life. Then when Omni-Man continues to attack, Red Rush counters Omni-Man's speed by moving his teammates out of the way at the last second, frustrating Omni-Man.
You'd Expect: Red Rush, having seen how effective this tactic is, would continue to do support work, getting his teammates out of the way of Omni-Man's lethal attacks and helping them coordinate their offense.
Instead: Red Rush decides to attack Omni-Man himself. Yes, the Fragile Speedster tries to engage the Superman Expy in close quarters combat.
Result: While Red Rush is faster than Omni-Man, the latter is able to react fast enough to grab Red Rush during one attack. And once he has his hands on Red Rush, it's a simple matter for Omni-Man to simply crush Red Rush's skull, killing him.
    • Darkwing functions as the team's Batman Expy, using stealth, gadgets, skill and intelligence to take out his opponents. During the early stages of the fight he uses his throwing weapons to stagger Omni-Man and set him up for Aquarus. At this point in the fight, he's just seen Omni-Man murder Red Rush.
You'd Expect: Darkwing to realize how limited he is in a direct fight against someone like Omni-Man, and would continue use his weapons to distract Omni-Man from a safe distance to give his teammates openings to attack. Similarly, you'd expect Darkwing to try and get away, either to call for help or at least alert people to what's going on.
Instead: Darkwing tries to sneak attack Omni-Man via a descending drop-kick. Yes, the Badass Normal tries to engage the Nigh-Invulnerable Flying Brick in close quarters combat.
Result: Omni-Man catches Darkwing's leg mid-kick and then ragdolls Darkwing into the ground. Twice. Leaving Darkwing very, very dead.
Even Worse: Omni-Man then throws Darkwing's corpse at Green Ghost, who instinctively solidifies to catch it. This leaves her solid and vulnerable when Omni-Man follows up with a punch to her face. Darkwing's foolishness not only got himself killed, but Green Ghost as well.

However, these edits were deleted using the following logic:

— Simply doesn't fit, as we barely know anything about the character before their deaths, claiming that they're holding the Idiot Ball is simply inaccurate as we need to know their typical behavior to call it as such, in addition as we see when the Guardians fight the Mauler Twins, the tactics used the by the characters to fight Omni-Man are pretty much the same so this —

I disagree with this reasoning for several reasons:

  1. 1: What An Idiot does not require that the character to be acting out of character, only that the character is doing something stupid. Thus, even if their actions are in character, it still qualifies as a "What an Idiot" moment because of how blatantly dumb they're being. As I pointed out, the two most physically vulnerable heroes tried to engage a Superman Expy in close quarters combat, when there were A) More durable people around, B) Other ways they could help and C) They're supposed to be experienced heroes who should know better.

  2. 2: Red Rush and Darkwing demonstrate they they actually know better in their only other previous fight. During the fight with the Mauler Twins, who are both superstrong but neither as strong, tough or fast as Omni-Man, Red Rush doesn't attack them until Green Ghost and Martian Man had the Maulers restrained and immobilized, allowing him to safely pummel them. Likewise, Darkwing NEVER engages the Maulers in close quarters combat, always attacking from a distance and working with his allies to set them up for success. In short, the tactics they display in this fight make sense for two relatively fragile heroes, while their actions in the Omni-Man fight get them killed.

  3. 3: In the Omni-Man fight itself, both Darkwing and Red Rush actually do fight intelligently, helping in other ways that don't involve trying to punch the Nigh-Invulnerable Flying Brick, and are actually useful. Then they opt to try to punch Omni-Man and immediately get themselves them killed.

So, in summary: What an Idiot does not require the characters to be acting out of character, only that they do something stupid. Even without that, Red Rush and Darkwing do act contrary to their previous fight, doing something so stupid they get killed. And this was after contributing to the fight they were in via non-idiotic ways.

I apologize for the length, but my question remains: Are these two What an Idiot examples valid and I'm free to re-post them, or was the person who deleted them right to do so?

Does this count as Alternate Universe or Gameplay and Story Segregation?

In a fanfic based on a videogame, which follows cannon pretty damn closely and has several instances of Gameplay and Story Segregation, there's this one instance where the exact major enemies in one stage are different compared to the ones seen in-game.

[up] I guess? Other than a couple of folks, they're not important in the game, but it's a fairly big arc in the fanfic - there's even a mini-arc in there about figuring out how to beat one of the changed enemies.

If they were named that way for the purpose of spelling out those words, then yes.

I wouldn't buy that claim for any except Four Lines, All Waiting, and I'd still be surprised to learn it was intentional.

"Phrase happens to spell an acronym by coincidence" is not a trope.

YMMV.Spider Man PS 4

  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!:
    • Several reviews have noted that while the game is excellent, as an open world game it really sticks to the formula. For a few examples, the in-game map is covered in fog that's removed by interacting with towers a la Ubisoft. There's a bunch of collectibles and a skill tree like most recent open-world game. All three of these things have been in use for almost a decade before the game came out, and are seen as overused by professional critics.
    • The DLCs have drawn similar criticism due to taking place on the same map with the same gameplay elements while not adding any new skills or abilities to Spider-Man's arsenal.

Wouldn't the first example fit Cliché Storm better? It's the Same, Now It Sucks! is when fans complain about the next installment not changing stuff from the previous installment in a series. This Spider-Man series is a new series, and I don't think it can apply for that item. Plus, the whole open world design has been a trend in games for a while now, and I think Cliché Storm could cover gameplay trends like this.

Hey. There's an example in Minecraft for the player that I think shouldn't be there.

  • Dark Is Not Evil: Aside from the option of getting dark based skins, they can wear netherite armor and can use it to defend villagers.

I felt like that this trope is invoked (sometimes) rather than actually played.

For Awesome Ego:

  • Naruto:
    • Naruto himself brilliantly inverted this. Initially viewed by both characters and fans as a loud Ninja Brat, he wins the audience over by being the underdog and that his ego being a front to mask the insecurity over being hated for something not of his fault. As such, seeing his Character Development as he becomes stronger and winning everyone over makes him more beloved. However, he actually becomes a Humble Hero as the series grows darker, his losses growing and dwelling over his failures.
    • Meanwhile, somewhat averted with Sasuke, who has an arrogant ego, and both a superiority and inferiority complex. He quickly becomes a fan favorite due to his knowledge, ninja skills, and impressive battle tactics. But once Part II comes, fans slowly began to lose all respect for him as he became too intimidating and egotistical, while Naruto has lost his big ego because he doesn't need it anymore. It gets averted even more once he starts suffering from Badass Decay; with him getting utterly humiliated by Killer Bee, having to get saved more often, and ultimately getting dwarfed by Naruto in terms of power.

  • One Piece:
    • Roronoa Zoro. This man is stated to be "more arrogant than God", trash-talks his opponents all the time during a fight and, during a battle with an opponent, his swordwork wasn't effective on, declared he would be able to cut him by the end of the fight. He did.
    • Usopp is an interesting example in that he only has an ego if there's nothing bad happening, and turns into a complete coward when something does go wrong... while still kicking plenty of ass anyway. The fans love him for it.

~Bubblepig I think it should be rewritten at the very least: as someone who has not seen it, the entry seems more about the backlash to a Face–Heel Turn and not Draco in Leather Pants as such. It also one cites a lone piece of fanfiction so it may not be as widespread as the trope requires.
