Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Can Creepy Changing Painting allow photographs that also change in a creepy way? There's an opening intro for a series where the mouth in the photograph of one of the main characters changes from a straight line to a smile. Does this count?
So... Do we have any response for my previous post?
"Us weirdos have to stick together!"I know, but the trope doesn't seem to include moving photographs, just photographs that show spooky things or curse the watcher/owner of the photo.

For example Ben 10: Alien Force is a sequel show to Ben 10, it’s first season introduces Argit and Professor Paradox two characters who would become popular with the fandom and play large roles throughout the franchise. Are they examples of an Iconic Sequel Character? Or does the trope only apply to later seasons even in sequel shows?
i think it still counts.
Is this subverted Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs?
- Shantae: Half-Genie Hero: Talking to the Jug Head Lady in Scuttle Town Square after defeating the Tinkerslug has her give a list of how series of works can continue, mentioning "soft reboot" as one of them, but ends up twisting the final item into "soft robot rabbit", instead of "soft reboot" combined with something:
This series I'm into... can't tell if the latest version is a sequel, a reboot, a soft reboot, a relaunch, or a soft robot rabbit. I'm so confused!

This entry on YMMV.Justice League XRWBY Super Heroes And Huntsmen
- Ensemble Dark Horse: The movie's incarnation of Jessica Cruz is one of its most lauded elements, with many citing her interactions with Jaune as the highlight and emotional core of the film, and her struggles with anxiety as its most profound subplot. Her performance from Jeannie Tirado has been similarly lauded as one of the production's best.
Jessica is a main character. Main characters aren't allowed to be Ensemble Dark Horse examples, are they?
Can the following entry from FourTemperamentEnsemble.Web Original be removed for shoehorning?
- Red vs. Blue:
- The Reds have Blood Knight Sarge (choleric), nice guy Donut (sanguine), introverted nerd Simmons (melancholic), and phlegmatic is split between the other two, as Beleaguered Assistant Lopez embodies the positive aspects, and Lazy Bum Sour Supporter Grif the negative ones.
- The Blues have the always angry Church (choleric), Casanova Wannabe Tucker (sanguine), Kindhearted Simpleton Caboose (phlegmatic) and Consummate Professional Tex (melancholic). Once the first and last are out, there are sort of replacements in Only Sane Man Washington (melancholic), and Broken Bird Action Girl Carolina (choleric, specially at first when she's a bossy jerk).
The wording of the entries themselves should hopefully make it clear that they're very cherry-picked examples. But their "temperament" is also being shoehorned. For example, while Tex is part of the Blue Team, her defining characteristic is her temper, which actually makes her Choleric. Meanwhile, Church's defining trait is that he hates everyone and everything, which falls into both Choleric and Melancholic, depending on what episode or events you want to cherry-pick. Simmons is even worse, he fits under three (Choleric, Melancholic and Phlegmatic).
Historically, these two teams have been troped on both Five-Man Band and Four-Temperament Ensemble at the same time, using the same characters (because the Blue Team also included as a character an AI tank called Sheila, which is excluded from the FTE entries). They were removed from both tropes, but have since been added back to FTE.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. There's a couple of references to Infinity +1 Sword and Infinity -1 Sword on Dokapon Kingdom I'd like to run through here, just to make sure it's fine to delete all references. Dokapon Kingdom is a board game with heavy RNG-based mechanics and not a lot of obscure mechanics, at least as they relate to equipment.
- Cool, but Inefficient: The final continent's Magic Shop does sell Super Bounce (and Giga Blaze, the Darkling offensive magic). However, it's just as expensive as you'd expect an Infinity +1 Sword to be.
The magic in question is easily purchasable from a magic shop once you proceed far enough into the game.
- Infinity -1 Sword: The Wabbit Shield is a defensive equivalent. Only obtainable from Wabbits, which only show up during once-in-a-blue-moon outbreaks. Its Defense boost is outclassed by pretty much every shield obtainable outside the continent of Asiana, but it offsets this by buffing every other stat ridiculously.
Infinity -1 is supposed to be equipment that isn't the best, but it's more easily obtainable than the Infinity +1 version. The Wabbit Shield in this game is a strong shield (and arguably the best shield, as defense is a Dump Stat in this game) and it's actually rather difficult to obtain due to being tied to either a rare event, or an out-of-the-way dungeon that isn't always open.
- Infinity +1 Sword: The No-Recoil Cannon, which is not only the best weapon stat-wise for the Robo Knight class, but transforms them into a tripod-mounted cannon when used to attack.
The No-Recoil Cannon is easily obtainable from a late-game loot space, so it can't be an I+1 weapon.
- The Hero, the game's Infinity Plus One Class, can use one item and one Field Magic in a single turn (which is helped out by having 12 slots for both), though it can't use 2 of the same category per turn.
The Hero class is a somewhat obscure class to obtain with two of its components involving heavy RNG, but it's not technically equipment.

In that case for a Ben 10 entry on Iconic Sequel Character should I list every iconic character by series and season? Or would an entry like this be more efficient?
- Ben 10: thanks to the franchise being a Long Runner any major character that debuted after the first season of the Original Series can count for this trope. In other words the only exceptions to this rule are Ben, Gwen, Max, Vilgax, Dr. Animo, Kevin, The Forever Knights, Hex, and Ben’s first 10 Aliens.

The current The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom entry for Broad Strokes feels like it's being misused. Yes, the story of Ganondorf's sealing is similar to a retelling of OOT, but since it isn't talking about elements of a previous work that are being treated with broad strokes with regards to the canon of TOTK, I feel like it's actually History Repeats.
x14: That's why I feel like the examples I mentioned were Broad Strokes rather than Cutting Off the Branches. In fact, things like the construction crew not recognizing Link makes me wonder about how broad the strokes are for the Tarrey Town entry, as well.
Yes.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableReposting this one since it's been a page and it got overlooked:
Does Involuntary Shapeshifter count if the user is able to voluntary control their shapeshifting abilities but occasionally loses control of it under certain circumstances such as when they get emotional?
Also, I don't think it warrants a Trope Talk thread BTW.

Victor of HGS S320 | "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember."Considering Involuntary Shapeshifter now redirects to Involuntary Shapeshifting and the description of the trope mentions Power Incontinence with any Shapeshifting ability in the first line, I think it definitely counts as an example. Occasional Power Incontinence is still Power Incontinence. And of course, if it's due to anger it could overlap with Hulking Out.

Is this character a clown? Balloon Boy from the Five Nights At Freddys franchise has been listed under Robot Clown (not contesting the robot part at all) with the following reasoning: "A childlike animatronic who looks like a clown due to his red nose and cheeks, big smile, and colorful clothing. He also has the ability to interfere with the protagonist's flash light and vent lights."
I disagree and don't think Balloon Boy is meant to be a clown at all. I just think BB is supposed to look like a stereotypical boy with his colorful attire (in particular, his propeller beanie) and I see his red (which look orange to me) nose and cheeks as mere stylistic choices.
Here's what he looks like for reference◊

I found this on YMMV.The Little Mermaid 2023:
- Salvaged Story: Previous entires in the Disney Live Action Remakes series have come under fire for trying to make the companies most iconic villains, such as Gaston and Jafar, both equally more sympathetic and more monstrous at the same time, turning them into Base Breaking Characters whose attempts at straddling such a line between likable and evil don't always pan out. Ursula's take in this film gives her no such sympathy, instead making her more monstrous while still keeping the aspects that made her such a memorable character from the original in the first place.
I don't see a story here.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadBesides, no one considers Ursula a bad villain, so there's nothing to save. Cut it.

ValdoReposting again.
I want to ask if for this part of ERB's Bruce Banner vs Bruce Jenner from 1:17 to 1:25, would it would count as a Hulking Out being parodied for Bruce Jenner's transformation to Caitlyn Jenner? Obviously from 1:07 to 1:16 it's played straight with Bruce Banner and The Hulk.
"I just need one of you to come here to give your life to the sun god. It will be for the monkey city's glory."I found this on Characters.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure The JOJO Lands (Jodio's folder)
- Mouthy Kid: He's a 15-year-old, and he sure acts like one, being very self-important and rather immature, combined with how much he mouths off to others, even in first-person narration.
Looking the the description, Mouthy Kid is about a kid who is snarky but have a reasonable personality. Jodio is anythung but since he is an Anti-Hero mixed with an immature teenager. Any other opinions?

About the BotW and TotK situation, the NPCs that remember Link are those he HAS to encounter as part of the main quest, plus the closest people associated with them. You don't have to encounter Hestu in the game to get the full plot, so the game treats it as if he doesn't know you. You don't have to encounter Purah and Robbie in the game (from what I recall), but Impa and Zelda know them and you do have to encounter them, so Link knows them. In a similar vein, Teba's family knows you but the construction crew doesn't (even though that's weird because Link lives in the Hateno house).
I haven't finished the game yet but more or less that seems to be the pattern.
