Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.

Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.

For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

Any new thought on my previous post? I would like to get more feedback before I do anything. Mostly I want to talk about the Pandering to the Base example, because I'm starting to think it's kind of misleading. The example before this one on the YMMV.Music 2021 (Overshadowed by Controversy) mentions that the film's director, Sia, always intended to hire a neurotypical actress for the role of Music. So to say that "...having an autistic person in a major film role" was a big goal for this film is, well, not true.

[up] That part could be cut. However, from what I recall, pandering was certainly attempted - I remember the autistic character being a selling point before news spread about how shallow that was both on- and off-camera.

I think pandering is either the wrong word or... something lol. But I think the whole thing was more lying to make the movie sell.

Put on a Bus

  • Calvin and Hobbes:
    • Watterson introduced Uncle Max into the strip but quickly realized he hadn't put enough thought into the character, and wasn't quite sure what to do with him. After visiting once, Max goes back home and is never seen or mentioned again.
      • Word of God says that another problem with Max was that his dialog was really hard to write: Watterson had a policy that Calvin's parents never be given names beyond "mom" and "dad," but this made their conversations with Max incredibly awkward. Thanks to Max, Watterson developed a personal rule that none of the supporting characters should be given outside friends or interests.
    • Calvin's beleaguered babysitter, Rosalyn, disappeared in 1990 but returned for a final arc in September 1995, three months before the strip's finale.
My understanding is that Put on a Bus needs for the character to be explicitly written out of the story. In the first example, Max is just going home, which is what you'd expect since he doesn't live with the family in the first place. In the second example, Rosalyn just stopped making appearances; she wasn't "written out".

[up] Uncle Max sounds like a valid POAB example, since there’s a specific reason he left, but not Rosalyn.

Before I remove this example kinda large example on AscendanceOfABookworm.Tropes N To S I came here to be extra sure. I'll cut it bc it's an admitted shoehorn (friendship instead of romance), and I googled highbeast and they're animals with wings, which would make this Flight of Romance, not this trope.

  • Romantic Ride Sharing: If it's not done for purely pratical reasons, such as transporting a commoner or a child too young to have learned to make their own, a noble won't be willingly sharing their higbeast with another person unless they are very close to them. If the other person is also of the other sex, the implications easily become outright romantic. The full complexity is explored with Ferdinand and Myne:
    • Karstedt figures out Ferdinand has gotten attached to Myne because he transports her himself during the trombe extermination mission, when he could have easily ordered literally other knight to transport her. Myne's young age keeps the implications at a frienship level.
    • Nobody bats an eye at Damuel transporting Myne when she starts being her bodyguard as a form of community service.
    • When Rozemyne makes her own highbeast into an Animal-Vehicle Hybrid with a much better carrying capacity than the standard Mechanical Horse type highbeast, she's considered strange for being willing to transport both commoners and other nobles.

It looks like a pegasus so it would be an example if they rode it like a horse and not a flying horse. Better to ask the person who added the example for clarification.

[up]Princess Garnet is rather obviously misuse. Princess Sarah might actually be an example, although the example doesn't quite have enough context to establish her as "proper". I'd comment out the first example and delete the second (unless someone knows the character well enough to either add context to or delete the first example as well).

Never a Self-Made Woman: This isn't about any "making" so its not an example?

  • Subverted in Bamboo Blade. Tamaki mentions the strongest kendoist she's ever seen, and her teammates assume she's talking about her father, but she actually means her mother.

[up] I'd say no as for the most part The Reignited Trilogy was received very well, in spite of the cut corners 3 had. Any vitriol towards Sanzaru specifically was coming from the Vocal Minority that already hated them thanks to Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.

[up][up]And it's about the commercial failure of the work killing then. Not the case if it was successful/they continued on afterwards.

ATT said to take these examples under Pet-Peeve Trope, which is In-Universe Examples Only, here.

My impression is that IUEO is different than No Real Life in RL is allowed if it is done in-work. If so then only the Carlin example is valid as the only one stated within the work (the comedy routine). Those the case?

Since No Pronunciation Guide has been disambiguated, would this count as Pronouncing My Name for You?

  • The protagonist of Arsenic and Adobo is named Lila, which is properly pronounced "Lee-lah" rather than "Lai-lah". When one of Lila's new friends visits her family restaurant, he's surprised to hear her being called "Lee-lah". Everyone outside of the family has apparently been calling her "Lai-lah", and she gave up on correcting people a long time ago.

I say "apparently" because a reader wouldn't be able to hear the pronunciation.

[up] I posted here in regards to the Yellow Peril example on Piofiore since its written more as an audience reaction. Synchronicity corroberated here stating that besides the weasley way its worded, it probably doesn't fit because it isn't just about eastern villian. In the post I bumped, I noted that the Lao-Shu don't look like YP villian, especially Yang. And so I was wondering if it should be removed on those grounds.
