Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

[up] I approve! [tup]

On CreatorBacklash.Web Original under the TV Tropes section:

The bolded part feels to mean-spirited to the person who created the trope. I also like the entry itself to be written in a more neutral tone.

The entry also feels redundant, when discussing cut tropes is what the Trope Epitaph page is for.

Should we cut the page quote for Josh Groban? Even if its a Self-Deprecation moment from Groban himself, I still think it counts as bashing.

I checked casually 2D Visuals, 3D Effects and jeez it's filled to the brim with complaining. Here's a sampler of the examples that need cleaning up:

    All the stuff
  • Blue Seed is all traditional, but the title itself (used for the eyecatch) gives us a blatantly rendered mitama bead and an unbelievably crappy rendering of vines and a city in the opening theme.
  • Done in Cross Ange for the Para-Mail units, the DRAGONs and the Mana effects to varying degrees of success.
    • Episode 25 has a poorly animated Hilda model in the background of one scene. It'd be excusable, as the characters are usually rendered in CGI for mecha sequences... if it weren't for the model's relative prominence during the scene in question.
    • Inverted for the Visual Novel based on the series. Most of the characters are fully CG models (which fail in their own ways), while others are simple 2D cutouts. This gets pretty ugly when both mediums are actually shown together.
  • The cars in Darker than Black have a nasty habit of sticking out like a bruised pinky.
  • Dinosaur King: The dinosaurs when fighting. To say it clashes horribly is an understatement.
  • Used a lot during the battle sequences in Divergence Eve, flipping back and forth between 3D and 2D animation every few seconds. And it is VERY conspicuous, owing to the terrible quality of the CGI.
  • Seen in a fairly trippy sequence in Fate/stay night, where Shiro faces down a very badly animated CG dragon.
  • Certain scenes in Full Metal Panic!'s anime adaptation use 3D effects. In the Abridged Series, Kurz comments on how cheesy it looks and how he can't wait to switch over to Kyoto Animation.
  • The third Fushigi Yuugi OVA has rather horrific CGI used for the fake Suzaku and Seiryuu dieties; it's made even stranger when the fake Byakko and Genbu deities are traditionally animated.
  • Trumping any of the below examples of unconvincing 2D/3D meshing are the helicopters from Golgo 13: The Professional. Of course, those helicopters have a good excuse — they were the first use of CG in the history of animation (even beating out Pixar by a year).
    • Bayonetta: Bloody Fate is very bad about this. A shot of a CGI piano is seen at the beginning of the film, and several angels, namely Temperantia and Irenic, are in 3D as well. They don't even try to make any of the CGI elements blend in with the 2D animation.
  • For the most part, Kekkaishi is an example of the right way to mix computer graphics and hand-drawn animation. The barriers and Instant Runes are done so well that you could watch the whole series without realizing how they were done. But then you see a car moving and it all goes to hell. Automobile animation is still the kryptonite of CG.
  • Makai Senki Disgaea usually only uses CG for magic effects (and the spaceship of Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!), but the Prinny stadium in episode 8 is quite disturbing. And somehow hypnotic.
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena has the (now) terrible cel-shaded CG for the lengthy stair sequence seen in almost every episode. Also the floating castle projection.
  • Sailor Moon:
  • Slayers: The Next and Try seasons have small bits of CGI incorporated into their openings (the titles for both, an explosion for Next, and a map of the world in Try), but the seasons themselves are all traditionally animated. However, in Revolution and Evolution-R, well-made but horribly noticeable CG is done for some of the spells, water, hallways, and a slew of out-of-place 3D objects for the opening songs.
    • Before Revolution and Evolution-R was Slayers Premium. Unlike the former, Premium was made when CGI in general, let alone combined with 2D artwork, was still stodgy, yet it's thrown in for a third of the film. The octopi's palace sticks out, as do the octopi's jars, the ocean, and the monster's signature spell.
  • It happens quite a bit in Tiger & Bunny (most of the suits are CG after all), but these bananas are an especially bad example.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh!:
    • The CGI swimsuits put on Alexis/Asuka and her friends in the 4Kids version of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, to give the impression they're not in a onsen but in a pool. A pool with steam all around, apparently...
    • The crappy CGI shirt that was used to cover Yami's collarbone and shoulders.

And this is just the Anime & Manga folder. You can seriously make a drinking game of taking a shot every time you read the lines "crappy", "painfully jarring" or "sticks like a sore thumb".

The best character is always the one-shot disguise.

It's an occasional issue when trope names or descriptions are changed; sometimes the on-page examples don't get recontextualised accordingly.

TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter.The Simpsons

  • Many of the kids, especially the girls, get the shaft in more recent seasons, but none more so than Sherri and Terri. In the first few seasons they were clever and tricky, knowing how to play Bart like a fiddle, and could have served as rivals to him yet more lighthearted antagonists compared to Sideshow Bob or even as occasional allies as they shared some common ground and one or both are implied to have a crush on Bart. Later on, they were shifted to being associated with Lisa instead of Bart. Not that they couldn't have worked with Lisa in theory, but in practice, this completely took away any significance outside of sometimes having a few seconds to set up a "Lisa has no friends" plot, making jokes about them being twins or being subject to some incredibly over-the-top painnote  seemingly as "punishment" for not liking Lisa. Despite the fact that nothing they've done approaches what Lisa's done at her worst, yet she is never treated nearly as badly for the things she does.

I do think the twins are a valid example, but the entry kind of goes on a tangent to complaining about Lisa, reading more like an Unintentionally Sympathetic entry that doesn't relate to their potential and lack of screentime so much as their screentime being poorly used.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I'm a bit late in commenting, but I agree with the removal of Boobs Of Steel from CreatorBacklash.Web Original, not just because of what was said about the Trope Epitaph's existence, but also because that really wasn't on the same level as Five Bad Band (which I also don't think needs to be added to that page, and can just stay on the Epitaph).

Pretty much the whole description for Cinder is complaining about the behavior of the devs and its connection to NFTs:

"Cinder was a Massively Multiplayer Online NFT Game developed by a section of WildWorks that later split off and became Cinder Studios. It is notorious among the Feral fandom for being a copy of Feral except with less content, requiring an NFT to play, and replacing Feral.

On November 28, 2021, Cinder was announced in Feral’s official Discord server, sparking outrage across Feralians. Many of them grew up playing Animal Jam, which involved protecting the environment. Cinder, on the other hand, requires an NFT avatar to play, and NFTs are harmful to the environment.

There was even more controversy when Cinder was released. On February 18, 2022, when Cinder released, Feral was suddenly shut down and replaced with Cinder. Someone pointed out this was against WildWorks’ TOS, so WildWorks briefly reopened Feral on March 27 to give them one more day to say goodbye… except they only gave the players 3 hours and turned off the chat.

On February 8, 2023, Cinder’s servers and website suddenly shut down with no warning or announcement, Cinder Studios was unexpectedly disbanded, and the official Discord server was later set to read-only.""

Some of the information here could probably go on a YMMV page, but I'm not sure how to trim the description down to something more objective beyond stating that it was a spin-off of Feral.

From Batman: Rogues Gallery (Part 3) Penny Plunderer

Retcon: Gallingly, his only claim to fame, being the maker of the giant coin exhibited in the Batcave, was taken away from him and given to Two-Face. For an added dose of irony, Two-Face: Year One saw Joe fall victim to Dent's giant coin as collateral damage!

The Gallingly is a major red flag because the Penny Plunderer's a major nobody, hence why the coin is usually stated to have belonged to Two-Face.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I feel like this entry from YMMV.The Amazing Digital Circus is arguing with itself.

  • Discredited Meme: The "My name is Caine, I am your bitch" series of parody videos poking fun at the crude humor of the Hellaverse, specifically Hazbin Hotel, became a source of controversy when fans started using it to take pot-shots at Vivienne Medrano. Alex Rochon, Caine's voice actor, refused to dub any lines from it in his video Saying A Lot Of Things As Caine. Even the original creator of the meme had to clarify that they did not mean it with malicious intent and that Digital Circus fans ought to stop harassing Viv. That said, the whole reason the meme took off in the first place was because of Viv's rather hostile reaction to something that wasn't meant maliciously, note  and it's become something of a stock response every time someone makes a Hellaverse joke and finds themselves blocked because of it.

Regardless of your personal opinion of VivziePop, is bringing up how the meme grew in popularity really necessary? At the end of the day, overreaction or not, Vivzie isn't obligated to find the meme funny and both the meme's creator and Caine's VA want the people using this meme for the sole purpose of mocking her to knock it off.

Characters.Sonic X: the character notes have some subtle complaining in the choice of tropes to describe the characters. It doesn't describe the characters properly.
