Trivia / Marvel's Avengers

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: Apparently Kamala had recommended that if Thor decides to play Dungeons & Dragons, that he should play a barbarian.
  • All-Star Cast: Four of the main five Avengers are assembled from quite a who's-who of notable voice actors— Nolan North* plays Tony Stark, Laura Bailey is Black Widow, Travis Willingham plays Thor, Troy Baker* plays Bruce Banner, and Darin De Paul plays the Hulk. The most obscure cast member, Jeff Schine *, ironically plays Captain America, who spends basically the entire game out of contact.
  • Ascended Fanon: In the given backstory for Hawkeye, it includes the detail he was once an enlisted member of the US Military before being recruited by SHIELD for the Avengers. This isn't something from any Marvel canon (be it the main comics, MCU, or Ultimate Marvel), but it was a popular backstory in fanworks for his MCU counterpart, during the time before his character was fleshed out beyond "Loki's brainwashed puppet and Black Widow's buddy".
  • Ascended Meme: In the closing cutscene of the "Taking A.I.M." expansion, Tony comments that people can stop asking where Hawkeye is now that he’s back with the Avengers.
  • Author's Saving Throw: As a final coda for the game, the final update, v2.8, added everything from the Marketplace to the main game, unlocking all the paid costumes, emotes and banners for all the characters that they managed to release, while also confirming the game would be playable in full for as long as possible even after the September cut-off.
  • Casting Gag: There are two sections of the Reassemble campaign where Captain America needs to run through a section of a base collapsing all around him. Fittingly, in both cases, Nolan North is along for the ride.
  • Content Leak:
    • A data mine of the Beta revealed that several new characters would be playable post-launch. The already announced Spider-Man & Hawkeye were discovered, along with Ant-Man note , Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captain Mar-Vell, Daisy Johnson, Doctor Strange, The Falcon, Kate Bishop, Mockingbird, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, The Vision, The Wasp, War Machine, and the Winter Soldier. Only Kate Bishop, Black Panther, and The Winter Soldier were ever released.
    • Another leak that came out later indicated that the Inhuman Royal Family would somehow be represented in the game as a faction, rather than just Ms. Marvel and Quake.
    • A glitch in April 2021 allowed players access to cosmetics that had yet to be released to the marketplace - including several of the costumes from Avengers: Endgame.
    • The Marketplace Update email for September 23, 2021 included an image that revealed Captain America’s costume from Avengers: Infinity War was going to be released in the near future.
    • Immediately after the February 8, 2022 patch was released, players found that Black Widow’s skins had been updated to include her costume from Avengers: Age of Ultron, before it was removed a few hours later.
  • Creator Backlash: Yosuke Matsuda, The President of Square Enix admitted the game never reached the highs that were expected and regretted having Game as a service model in the game since it didn't do the project any favors.
  • Delayed Release Tie-In: The “Red Room Takeover” was announced to take place in May 2021, with the intent being to tie-in to the release of Black Widow (2021), but the film would wind up being delayed (once again) until July due to the COVID-19 pandemic; subsequently, the event returned in July to commemorate the release.
  • Fake American:
    • Usman Ally, a Pakistani actor, voices the American George Tarleton.
    • Australian Jolene Anderson voices the American Monica Rappaccinni.
    • Italian-Canadian Giacomo Gianniotti plays the American Clint Barton.
  • God Never Said That: The launch week War Table stream was prefaced by a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who had passed away mere days earlier, and a note that the content that was going to be shown in the stream had been altered out of respect to the actor. Crystal Dynamics has never said what content reveal was delayed, but members of the fandom still insist that it was the intended reveal of Black Panther as a post-launch hero.
  • In Memoriam: The War Table stream before the game's launch was dedicated in memory of Chadwick Boseman.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Averted, despite it being a live service game, it has instead been adjusted so that all cosmetics are available for free, and the game will still be playable after support ends.
  • Meme Acknowledgment: The July 2020 War Table acknowledged the "Where's Hawkeye?" meme, before finally confirming him as a post-launch DLC character.
  • Playing Against Type: Troy Baker as Bruce Banner, as opposed to his usual roles as Hawkeye and Loki in other Marvel media. Even he thought he was going to be cast as one of those characters when he was called to audition for the game.
  • Production Lead Time: The presence of Inhumans in a major supporting role, along with their persecution by AIM, suggests the game started production during Isaac Perlmutter's stint as CEO of Marvel and his attempt to replace the X-Men with Inhumans. By the time the game came out in 2020, he had stepped down as CEO and his push for the Inhumans came to an end, making this game one of the last media strongly tied to this push for Inhumans.
  • Real-Life Relative: The voice actors of Thor (Travis Willingham) and Black Widow (Laura Bailey) are married in real life.
  • Release Date Change:
    • The initial release got pushed back about four months from May 15, 2020 to September 4 in order to fix and polish the game.
    • All of the post-launch content was delayed due to the team diverting from additional content to work on patches to improve the stability of the game. This included the next-gen version of the game, which was delayed from the launch dates of the respective consoles to March 18, 2021.
    • The Omega-Level Threat mission A.I.M. Cloning Labs was intended to launch shortly after release of the game, but was delayed indefinitely due to a networking bug; this same bug also affected the Omega-Level Threat missions that were intended to be released alongside the “Taking A.I.M.” and “Future Imperfect” updates. Word of God has since stated that once the bug has been resolved, all of the affected missions will be released together.
  • Role Reprise:
    • Travis Willingham and Laura Bailey return as Thor and Black Widow respectively, having played those characters in many different Marvel properties.
    • Nolan North plays Iron Man once again after previously voicing him in the Marvel Experience attraction.
    • In the Brazilian dub, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hank Pym are voiced by their Marvel Cinematic Universe voice actors (Marco Ribeiro, Duda Espinoza, Mauro Horta and Marcelo Pissardini respectively); Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye have their Avengers Assemble voice actors reprising (Cássia Bisseglia, Mauro Castro and Márcio Araújo respectively); Kamala Khan and Nick Fury have their voice actors from LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (Michelle Giudice and Wellington Lima respectively) in addition to the Hulk (who had been again voiced by Mauro Castro in that game); and Taskmaster has Fábio Moura from Spider-Man (PS4) returning.
    • In terms of DLC, Sean Chiplock reprised his role as Spider-Man from the Marvel TL;DR web-series.
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise: Both the cover art to the Art Book & the line of Funko Pop vinyls based on the game confirmed that Captain America didn't die on A-Day, despite the rest of the game’s marketing trying to obscure this.
  • Trolling Creator: Near the end of Square Enix's E3 2019 conference, a prompt opened up on screen: "To the fans who have been waiting... At long last... Final Fantasy VIII." This caused the live stream chat (who had been waiting over 2 years for news on the game) to get angry. After the trailer, screen darkens, and transitions straight to the A-Day trailer catching said chat off guard.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Troy Baker initially turned down the role of Bruce Banner, as he had no interest in playing the Hulk. He only changed his mind once Crystal Dynamics made it clear that they had no interest in him voicing the Hulk either, and would be casting someone else as Banner’s other half.
    • "Future Imperfect" originally featured a fight with Taskmaster, which culminated with the introduction of Old Hawkeye to Kate and his younger counterpart; this was changed due to player fatigue with fighting the same two villains (Taskmaster and Abomination) since the launch of the game.
    • Thor’s skin from Avengers: Endgame notably lacks Stormbreaker, instead wielding Mjolnir; Word of God states that the team tried to incorporate the weapon but were ultimately unable to do so.
    • Due to support for the game being halted in September 2023 with Winter Soldier as the final new character, all the other characters found in the Content Leak cited above became this.
  • Working Title: Known from 2017 to 2019 as The Avengers Project.
