Shout Out / Prehistoric Park Reimagined

Go To

  • Several early episodes are deliberately inspired by episodes of previous existing dinosaur media such as Walking with Dinosaurs, Dinosaur Revolution, and even the original Prehistoric Park. Doubles as Mythology Gag.
  • The scene where a pack of Allosaurus ambush a herd of sauropods is a homage to a scene in King Kong (2005) when a pack of Venatosaurus ambush a herd of Brontosaurus.
  • The scene where the lone Apatosaurus in quicksand is about to be hunted by a pack of Ceratosaurus can also be interpreted as a minor nod to a somewhat similar scene from the Rite of Spring segment in Disney's Fantasia.
  • This same juvenile lone male Apatosaurus is later named Arlo. Furthermore, the alpha female of the Brachiosaurus herd is named Baylene while one of the juveniles in that same herd is named Shorty.
  • During the very first encounter with Compsognathus, some of Drew and Adrian's dialogue is almost an exact word for word replication of some dialogue from a similar situation in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
  • In New Blood, not only does Jack comment that "Someone's clearly spared no expense" upon sight of the Ancient Mariner, but two of the apatosaurus back at the park are revealed to be named Gertie and Bron. There's also the fact that a single lone juvenile nothosaurus that gets rescued prior to a larger colony ends up getting named Nemo. And then there's the fact that the male allosaurus europaeus is named Broken Jaw.
  • The tradition continues in Red in Tooth and Claw, in which a lone male arctotherium and a lone female wingegyps cartellei are named Kronk and Yzma. Furthermore, according to both A-LionGleek and Nathanoraptor, one mated pair of macrauchenia is intended to be named Kuzco and Malina and one of the toxodon is named Pacha.
  • In Oozing from the Pit, one of the male megatherium from Red in Tooth and Claw is revealed to be named Sid, the male amongst the American lion pride is named Lafcadio, and the Columbian mammoth matriarch and the male she mates with are named Celeste and Babar. Furthermore, the smilodon fatalis rescued in this mission are named Diego and Shira while the single adult male arctodus that Diego is seen battling before their respective rescues is named after Smokey the bear. And finally, according to A-LionGleek, Sid's (planned on A-LionGleek's end) mate is planned to be named Camille; a name that is somewhat similar to Kamalanote .
  • In Return of the King, the t-rex family are named Rexy, Tyrannor, Terrence, and Matilda. One of the quetzalcoatlus is named Cirrus. One of the juvenile triceratops is named Theo, and he has a sister named Cera. The alpha male of the pachycephalosaurus herd is named Sandor, and he has a sister named Luxa. And one of the dinilysia is named Kaa. Also, the scenes where Leon ends up unwittingly volunteered by Drew into endangering himself for the sake of recapturing an escaped male torvosaurus are a nod to the early scenes involving the Loch Ness monster in Missing Link. Finally, the moment in which the rescue team and t-rex family successfully escape to the future 'just in time' serves as an implied shout-out to the end of the first season finale of The Umbrella Academy.
  • This tradition is shown to still continue as early as the story's first spin-off Prehistoric Park: Extras by virtue of the alpha male Pleistocene coyote being revealed to have been named Dag.
  • In Alien Empire, there is heavy degree of Shout-Out Theme Naming related to Amphibia, with three of the female crassigyrinus being named Anne, Sasha, and Marcy, and two of the proterogyrinus being named Yunnan and Andrias.
  • In Extras episode Glorious at the Top, one of the other adult male stegosaurus that got rescued alongside Gideon and the rest is revealed to be named Striker and the two young juveniles are revealed to be named Spike and Tippy.
  • The Amphibia Shout-Out Theme Naming continues in South of Heaven (which is itself named after the title of a Jim Thompson novel) by virtue of a diplocaulus named Wally and an eryops named Grime. For double points on Wally's name, he is at one point mentioned in a chapter of Extras to have ended up having a bikini top placed upon his head similarly to how a robot with a very similar name once unwittingly placed a bra on his own head.
  • In Extras episode Two Sides of One Coin, one of the other adult male macrauchenia is revealed to be named Manco, the name that was originally planned for Kuzco's namesake.
  • In Extras episode Soothing Seas, one of the adult male cymbospondylus is revealed to be named Sinbad.
  • In Extras episode Creature Comforts, the male Morrison formation ceratosaurus and two of the females are revealed to be named Rhaegar, Ellia, and Lyanna, respectively. The third female, meanwhile, is named Vermithrax. Furthermore, in another shoutout that doubles as a Mythology Gag for Prehistoric Park: Extinction World, the dominant pair of phorusrhacos are named Phil and Aurora. And there's also the noticeable fact that the female amongst the allosaurus fragilis pack's 'dominant couple' is named Demona.
  • The entirety of Extras episode I Tawt I Taw A Dimetwodon is more or less an extended shoutout to Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird and Wile E Coyote And The Roadrunner.
  • Extras episode A Little Taste of Heaven continues the shoutout tradition by revealing that Theo and Cera's parents are appropriately named Toppsy and Tria, as well as how the younger of the two males amongst the rescued ankylosaurus population is named Bumpy.
  • In Extras episode The Little Guys, it is revealed that, during the staff Halloween party alluded to in No Small Parts, Only Small Animals, Yolanda dressed up as Rapunzel while Jack and Colette respectively dressed up as Captain America and Black Widow.
  • In Of Scales and Feathers, two of the rescued borhyaena are named Logan and Raven (specifically, after Garfield Logan/Beast Boy and Raven), the rescued kelenken are stated by Word of God on A-LionGleek's part to be named in varying capacities after characters from various incarnations of The Three Musketeers, and the in-universe newly discovered species of terrestrial crocodilian both resemble and are named after the foetodon from King Kong (2005). And in the same vein, the pinnatono are likewise modeled and named after the flightless birds of the same name revealed in supplementary material for the same movie, with the plumadaemon likewise being heavily based upon the noctupervagus from the same book that revealed the pinnatono.
  • In The Oddities, one of the beelzebufo is (according to Word of God) named Kermit. Furthermore, the La Brea caracara hatchling Adrian was raising in Extras chapter The Skies is revealed to be named Hayabusa while the theriodictis pup Alice was raising in Of Packs and Predators is revealed to have now been named Mdogo. And to further add onto the Lion Guard references, the alpha male and female of the larger theriodictis pack rescued in Red in Tooth and Claw are revealed to be named Reirei and Goigoi.
  • In The D-Bags, the large adult female deinosuchus is named Dil while the three juvenile deinosuchus are revealed by Word of God to be named Swampy, Cranky, and Ally.
  • In Hell's Labyrinth, the alpha male and female pectinodon are revealed to be named Butch and Cassidy, the beta male of the Morrison Formation allosaurus pack is revealed to be named Big Al, the 'alpha male and female' of the secodontosaurus aggregations are revealed to be named Kenge and Komodo (respectively), and the torvosaurus duo are revealed to have been named Vhagar and Balerion in the time between the former's escape in Return of the King and the moment they both escape together in this episode.
  • In the same chapter in which his name is revealed, Big Al's arrival alongside that of the rest of the Morrison formation allosaurus pack (sans alpha male and female Santino and Demona) at the main Hell Creek herbivore paddock is heralded by Bad Vibrations (complete with ripples in a nearby puddle) in much the same way that the t. rex's arrival is heralded in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
  • Not too long after Jack and Colette burst onto the scene at the Hell Creek forest building to help out the former's quartet of friends amongst the herpetology division, Jack goes so far as to gleefully state a variation of the famed Big Damn Heroes line from Firefly.
  • At one point in the middle of Hell's Labyrinth, Matilda the t. rex and Gideon the stegosaurus end up dueling against each other in the rain.
  • In Spirits of the Ice Forest, the speculative Antarctican dilophosaur species have protofeather manes around their necks that puff up in intimidation gestures similarly to frills.
  • In Life in Transition, Diego and Shira's cubs are revealed to be named Blag, Ka-Zar, and Iorunn, with the former two being named after two of the wildebeests from The Wild, Ka-Zar technically also sharing a name with with Marvel's resident Savage Land jungle hero, and Iorunn (the single female of the trio) being named after one of the 13 dwarf chieftains from The Inheritance Cycle.
  • A sizable number are featured in Ice Time:
    • To A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones: The six cave wolf pups are named Grey Wind, Lady, Summer, Nymeria, Shaggy Dog, and Ghost (with Ghost even being an albino like his namesake).
    • To The Chronicles of Narnia: The alpha male of the cave wolf pack is named after Maugrim.
    • To Babar: The elderly adult male coelodonta is named Rataxes.
    • To Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) and general Santa Claus mythos: Three of the megaloceros fawns are named Rudolph, Clarice, and Fireball. Eight of the adult megaloceros are named after Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Vixen. One of the tarpan foals is named Hermey. Finally, the single male amongst the three coelodonta/woolly rhino calves is named Cornelius (as in Yukon Cornelius).
    • To The Jungle Book: Baloo from Prehistoric Earth makes the jump from that fic to this one.
    • To Brother Bear: Two adolescent steppe brown bear brothers are named Kenai and Denahi (with their slain additional brother being given the honorary name of Sitka).
    • To Seeker Bears: Two of the other adult cave bears are named Toklo and Aiyanna.
    • To Tarzan: The adult female cave leopard is named Sabor.
