Go To

The Consortium is a powerful organization which supports Providence and functions as the superiors of White Knight (formerly) and Black Knight. Little is known about this organization, but they seem to provide funding for Providence and the Nanite Project.

    In General
  • Big Bad Wannabe: For all the they hype they've gotten, they're literally little more than Providence's bankroll. They're a bunch of middle-aged men who want power, but don't have the slightest clue about what Providence or Rex go through on a daily basis in pursuit of it. All they do is throw money at them. As far as cleverness or competence goes, none of them hold a torch to Black Knight or Van Kleiss of old. Even their Meta upgrade does little to change this: they have no idea how to use their individual powers effectively and completely rely on Black Knight's lead. Even the idea to tear Rex apart as payback was Black Knight's.
  • Body Horror: They come out of the Meta-Nanite empowering in "End-Game" as robots. Not as much squick as usual for the trope, but they're blocky, metallic, and with miscellaneous hydraulics sticking out of them. Essentially, they went in as humans and came out as living action figures. Which they did not see coming.
  • Bullying a Dragon: They constantly make misogynistic comments towards Black Knight, despite knowing of her EVO powers.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: One of them shows up in season 1, being turned into a temporary Evo by Rylander to force him to pay the funding to complete the project. When the Consortium becomes Rex’s main order of business, the same man is shown to have become a nervous wreck as a result, used to help provide information.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: After fusing with the Meta-nanite.
  • Combining Mecha: When Rex messes up their plans to gain the full power of the Meta-Nanites, each of the five gain one of the five powers the Meta-Nanites hold. Black Knight then gets the idea to merge into a single being with all their combined powers.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Besides Black Knight, every member of the group is one of these.
  • Godhood Seeker: The Consortium wish to use the Meta-Nanites to take over the world and to become gods. Before that, they funded the Nanite research that resulted in those Meta-Nanites as well as the Nanite dispersal event, in order to gain immortality.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: They were the ones who funded the Nanite Project. The Nanite Event itself only happened because the scientists working on the project rebelled when they realized what the Consortium was planning. Though we later find out Van Kleiss attempted to beat them to it.
  • Greed: The driving vice behind the Consortium. Lampshaded by Black Knight during the Grand Finale:
"You surprised I admit it? Well, don't be. You'll never get far in life without wanting it all."
  • Karma Houdini: The Grand Finale ends with The Consortium (except Vostok) getting away totally scot-free. Although it can be implied that they lost all their powers in Rex's World-Healing Wave and are now on the run as international fugitives, given all the crimes they committed in broad daylight during their brief reign of terror.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: They're all mildly misogynistic. This bites one of them in the ass when dealing with Black Knight.
  • Power Floats: They all seem to have this ability after absorbing the Meta-Nanites.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: Despite absorbing the power of the Meta-Nanites, they initially get their asses handed to them by Rex due to a lack of experience in using their powers.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Unlike the majority of the cast, the Consortium is made up of businessmen who have no experience in combat. Rex, on the other hand, spent years fighting against all sorts of dangerous EVOs, many of whom were stronger and faster than him. When the Consortium get into their first battle with Rex, they get their asses handed to them despite having Story Breaker Powers.

    Black Knight

Black Knight

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2021_04_23_22_00_27.png
Gender: Female
Profession: Providence Councilwoman, Leader of Providence, Consortium Member
Voice Actor: Jennifer Hale

After being transported six months into the future via Breach's powers, Rex finds that Black Knight has inexplicably taken over for White Knight as head of Providence, removing Six and Holiday in the process.

Though she is at all times polite and kind, her methods and motives are questionable at best.

  • Action Girl: Much like Holiday. Though she tends to stay out of the action, she often leads from the front lines. She's eventually revealed to be more dangerous than it was first implied
  • Affably Evil: Offers Rex refreshments and is nothing but courteous in their first meeting, and is polite and even soft-spoken at all times. Doesn't change the fact that she's deposed White Knight and gotten rid of Six and Holiday, and that her methods are by and large inhumane to Evo's and employees alike. Or the whole "becoming a god" thing.
  • Anti-Villain: She's a Type III.
  • Berserk Button: Though it would probably piss any woman off, the Consortium's misogynistic attitude toward her clearly doesn't do wonders for her loyalty, as one of them learned the hard way. Also, do not call her "little lady".
  • Big Bad: Of season 3.
  • The Dragon: To the Consortium, who run Providence. By comparison, White Knight didn't really tow the line.
    • The Starscream: She's made it clear she'll betray them for personal gain. Unfortunately for her, White Knight got a recording of her saying this, and will pass it on to the Consortium if she goes after him again. Ultimately only kept her at bay for a while, until she forced the Consortium to include her.
    • Dragon Ascendant: Working this angle, too. She kills one of the Consortium so she can take his place.
  • Evil Counterpart: Not surprisingly, is this to White Knight. She also turns out to be this to Rex, in terms of powers.
  • Eviler than Thou: She's nicer than White Knight in personality, but her methods are even more radical.
  • Friendly Enemy: While she and Rex are nominally on the same side, she has an almost inhuman patience for his flouting the law and undermining her efforts. She doesn't seem to have a problem with them chatting her up on missions, and is willing to work with them in a crisis. She also has an open offer of re-employment for Rex which she brings up often. All this despite having tried to mind-control Rex for her own efforts near their first meeting. She's later shown to be more "enemy" and less "friendly".
  • Hated by All: No one in-universe seems to like her very much. Rex, White Knight, even the Consortium and Van Kleiss holds some disdain for her.
  • Knight of Cerebus: It's always been a pretty dark show, but it got significantly darker when she took over Providence.
  • Knight Templar: Best seen in "Riddle of the Sphinx", where she destroys some very valuable scientific and archaeological finds due to the dangerous and questionable nature of the information they held. She does it with rockets and explosions.
  • Nerves of Steel: Never fully drops her composure, though she is visibly agitated on occasion.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: After taking leadership of Providence, the organization ended up getting a lot of upgrades, including outfitting The Keep with a devastating Wave-Motion Gun. When Providence turns against the Consortium, they take those upgrades with them, and it evens the odds against the Consortium.
  • Paint It Black: Repainted White Knight's office pitch. Her personal guard also have black uniforms distinguishing them from Providence grunts.
  • Praetorian Guard: Black Knight makes use of ninja-like agents known as "Black Pawns", who serve as her personal bodyguards.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Displays this whenever she has the upper hand. To perceptive combatants like White Knight, it's also an indicator she's dropped her guard.
  • Putting on the Reich: The cape normally obscures it, but her outfit has some definite similarities to the Third Reich's uniform of choice.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Subverted. She can be pretty reasonable, and she is so often that it's hard to remember how quick she is to resort to mind control rays.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: She has powers similar to Rex, claiming to be an improved version of him. With the mechanical Meta-Nanite, she has his complete powerset.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Moreso than White Knight!
    • Except it's not so well-intentioned, after all. That part's just a front.

Gender: Male
Profession: Consortium Member
Voice Actor: John DiMaggio

A KGB agent working as a black market money-lender. Vostok first appeared at a meeting held with Black Knight and the Consortium. He seemed to have much doubt with whatever Black Knight presented to them about the meta-nanites and the nanite project. This, however, angered Black Knight, forcing her to kill him.

  • Loan Shark: He's described as a black market money-lender.
  • Killed Off for Real: He is killed by Black Knight after he chooses to stay behind during the attack on the Consortium's base.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When Rex, Six, and Jungle Cat attack the Consortium's base, he is the only member that doesn't evacuate. Reddick even lampshades this as he leaves.
