Go To

This thread is for requesting edits or unlocks to Locked Pages or for requesting locks. It can also be used for technical requests to moderators such as:

  • creating new pages in the Main/ and other restricted namespaces without going through Trope Launch Pad
  • moving discussion pages
  • moving reviews

Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. Check Locked Pages and Permanent Red Link Club first. They can provide guidance on what are good and bad requests.
  2. Include working links in your request to the page(s) in question.
  3. If asking for edits, state your changes exactly as they should appear on the page, including proper Example Indentation, namespacing, and pothole and quote formatting. And make sure that what you want to add is actually a valid example.
  4. We do not edit archived articles, even to correct links.
  5. If you need to have the capitalization of a page title or namespace of a work fixed, ask here.
  6. If you need to remove a ghost wick, go here.
  7. To request a page to be moved along with its history, go here.
  8. Some locked pages have ongoing cleanup threads, like Complete Monster (Thread), Five-Man Band (Thread), and Magnificent Bastard (Thread). Other than purely technical requests, edits to these pages ought to be discussed in these threads first.
  9. Also, we do not do direct edits (other than changing wicks) to Magnificent Bastard or Complete Monster example lists. Rather, you need to do the edit to a sandbox page that follows the format Sandbox.Magnificent Bastard<Name of the example subpage> and Sandbox.Monster<Name of the example subpage> (e.g for Monster.Disney it's Sandbox.Monster Disney) and ask for it to be swapped in on Saturday for Magnificent Bastard and on Monday for Complete Monster.
  10. Inappropriate pages that keep being recreated, pages banned under The Content Policy and subpages that are disallowed (like Headscratchers pages for tropes) are valid reasons for requesting page locks.

NOTE: Edited with OP's permission.

We are not accepting any edit requests to Internet Counterattack for Feminist Frequency. Tempers are too high. I'll take a look later at whether it needs to be removed entirely for being Flame Bait.

I have a request for the Barack Obama page. This should got under Comic Books, unless you want to make a new Folder for Newspaper Comics:

  • He made a cameo appearance at the conclusion of a story arc in Luann that featured Luann, Bernice, and Delta (who had wanted to see him) visiting Washington DC. (His face was not actually shown.)

Edit request for Final Fantasy VII, I believe the trope fits.

  • Memetic Sex God: Tifa is widely considered the hottest Final Fantasy girl and is the poster girl for Ms. Fanservice in the series. Sephiroth serves as a male example, as legions of fangirls will testify.

That's not what the trope means. It means someone who is reputed to get laid a lot, not someone who's very sexy.

The trope's description indicates it's a fandom perception of a character. If the written description is poor I can do another one. The idea is, in the fandom's eyes, everyone wants Sephiroth and/or Tifa depending on orientation.

"The idea is, in the fandom's eyes, everyone wants Sephiroth and/or Tifa depending on orientation."

"this is a character who, in fandom's eyes, instantly gets laid by giving anyone a look and a suggestive wiggle of the eyebrows."

And the trope page itself lists numerous characters seemingly based only on sex appeal.

Explain plz.

Misuse of the trope. It is about "character is reputed to get laid a lot", not "character is sexy". Tifa is almost painfully demure in all her appearances. The idea that she bangs anything that moves, or simply waggles her hips to get any character in the FF universe to sleep with her, is ludicrous. Likewise Sephiroth.

Then someone really needs to start a TRS on it because it's a mess compared to what the apparently official definition is.

I dunno why I keep asking for entries on Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil, maybe because it is but have a new one for you.

  • Dead Island has as part of the story quest rescuing Jin from the police station, overrun by criminals. Throughout the mission it's hinted that this is exactly what happened to Jin, and the characters pull a Let's Get Dangerous! moment when dealing with the gangsters. Later at the prison the hardened thugs make no bones about using the Rape Threat to show they are the worst of the worst.

As discussed in the Short Term efforts topic, Useful Notes Pages In Main needs some entries removed; Online Edit, Orient Express, Pan and Scan, Perfect Solution Fallacy, Pern Fandom; Personal Seals, Pitch, Placebo Effect, Plagal Cadence, Rerun, Robin Hood and Russian Fashion. Additionally, Pern Fandom and Robin Hood need to be added to WorkPagesInMain.P To R.

On the Main Page for Fifty Shades of Grey, can the entry for You Keep Using That Word be moved underneath the entry for White Man's Burden, so that they’re properly alphbetised. And then can the following examples be added to the page:

  • Ambiguous Disorder:
    • Anastasia Steele is extremely thin, has a poor self-esteem and body-image and never wants to eat. This brings a whole new meaning to her nickname, "Ana".
    • Christian Grey, who by his own admission is "fifty shades of fucked up". He dislikes interacting with others, save for a small circle of people he's close to. He seems to have difficulty with communications, often getting angry with Ana for not knowing something she couldn't know unless he told her. He has extreme issues with impulsive behaviour, immediately responding to a joke e-mail Ana sent by driving to her house, tying her to the bed, and forcing himself on her, without giving her a chance to explain the situation. He also seems unable to rationally think about previous situations (for example, he continues to hate blondes because a blonde police officer took him away from his dead mother's body, even though sixteen or so years have passed and he should be able to think about it differently). Oh, and he enjoys taking submissives who look like his "crack whore" mother (his own nickname for her), because he enjoys pretending he's beating her. He blames this behaviour all on childhood trauma even though said trauma ended when he was four and, by his own admittance, he doesn't remember much of it.
  • Ascended Fan Fic: The series used to be a Twilight fanfic named Master of the Universe.
  • Awesome McCoolname: Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
  • Babies Ever After: This series, of all things played this one straight.
  • Bastard Boyfriend: Christian Grey is practically the poster boy. While he claims to be into BDSM, what we see comes across a lot more like domestic abuse. At one point he outright rapes Ana, and uses the "Not If They Enjoyed It" Rationalization. It's all meant to be seen as romantic.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: The Hungarian translator went memetic (for the curious and bilingual) because of this trope. After he arrogantly denied mistranslating anything, when an interviewer asked him why on Earth did he translate Kings of Leon as The Lion King a local blog called Leiter Jakabnote  took issue with the statement and tone. To date they found 6 lengthy blogposts worth of egregious examples of "Blind Idiot" Translation and are only 1/4 through the book.
  • Character Tics: Anastasia is prone to flushing and blushing.
  • Chick Magnet: Mr. Christian Grey definitely qualifies. Word of God says that the only women who aren't attractive to him are either related to him or are lesbians.
  • Completely Different Title: In Sweden the title is translated to what amounts to "Fifty shades of him", possibly since the pun in the title is untranslatable.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Christian Grey. He has Ana’s workplace under his control, he traces her with her cell phone (a present from him, by the way), and freaks out if she doesn't reply to his texts or emails within a certain time-frame. Even in the sequel, he buys all of the pictures of her just because he doesn't want another guy looking at her.
  • Domestic Abuser: Although Word of God denies it, Christian is abusive to Ana. The physical abuse is questionable because they are in a BDSM relationship, but Christian pressures and manipulates Ana into going along with it, so their relationship is emotionally abusive at the least.
  • Dramatic Reading:
  • Extremely Short Timespan: The entire trilogy takes place over a four and a half month span (not counting the epilogue time jump).
  • Falling into His Arms: This is how Ana meets Christian.
  • Female Gaze: The trilogy is essentially all about this.
  • First-Episode Spoiler: Christian Grey is revealed after hundred pages as secretly practicing BDSM and wants Anna as his sub. This is in the first book of the trilogy.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • The series was originally a Twilight fanfiction. It was so successful that it spawned its own followers: two novels entitled Gabriel's Inferno and Gabriel's Rapture have gotten a seven-figure deal. And like Fifty Shades, these novels started off as Twilight fanfics. Read about it here.
    • It also spawned the Eighty Days trilogy; another trilogy of BDSM romance books called Eighty Days Yellow, Eighty Days Blue and Eighty Days Red. As you may have noticed, even the title is designed to sound a bit like "Fifty Shades." It's no coincidence that it's got a number in the beginning and is followed by a color.
    • And then there's the short story collection 12 Shades of Surrender, which is exactly what it sounds like.
  • Forgets to Eat: Ana is known for this, and it infuriates Christian whenever he finds out that she hasn't been eating proper meals lately.
  • Has a Type: Much like other serial killers Christian Grey has a type: shortish, dark-haired young women with light eyes. Apparently they remind him of his late mother. His latest victim Ana fits this profile perfectly.
  • IKEA Erotica:
    • The words inner goddess and subconscious are used as metaphors for vagina and erection or enormous length for penis. E.g. the IG doing a salsa merengue (used to describe an oral sex scene), or the inner goddess jumping up and down like a cheerleader waving pom-poms (And it gets worse than that, even).
    • This trope is also played to the hilt in a scene where period sex occurs. "He reaches between my legs and pulls on the blue string what?! and gently pulls my tampon out and tosses it into the nearby toilet. Holy fuck. Sweet mother of all Jeez. And then he's inside me."
  • Informed Ability: Anastasia Steele easily falls under the trope. She's supposed to be a brilliant college student studying English Literature, but she doesn't have her own laptop or even an email address and Tess of the d'Urbervilles seems to be her only literary reference.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Christian Grey starts as a successful businessman who don't do romance, only interested in dominant/submissive relationships. However after proposing the protagonist Annastasia Steel a contract, he's willing to commit himself in a "vanilla relationship" with her.
  • Mrs. Robinson: Christian Grey reveals that he got involved with an older woman when he was only fifteen years old. Anastasia is quick to compare her to "Mrs. Robinson".
  • No Pregger Sex: Averted in the epilogue, in which Christian not only has sex with a pregnant Ana but flogs her belly.
  • Parallel Porn Titles: Presumably due to legal issues, Fifty Shades Of Grey: A XXX Adaptation was recalled and re-released as This Isn't Fifty Shades of Grey XXX: This is a Parody. They were still sued. Oh, and there's also 50 Shades of Dylan Ryan, originally titled 50 Shades of Grey: The Lesbian Edition. No Sasha Grey version, surprisingly.
  • Porn with Plot: The series is a trilogy of novels about a college student who falls in love with a billionaire. The books are also notorious for describing their BDSM intercourse in great detail. (They're also notorious because more than a few practitioners of BDSM have alleged that the author got Safe, Sane, and Consensual quite wrong).
  • Questionable Consent: Ana is told that being Christian's sub is up to her, and that she can negotiate the terms of their contract if she wishes. When she sends him an e-mail, joking that she wants their deal to be off (before she even signed the contract), Grey goes to her apartment, ties her to the bed, and has sex with her until she changes her mind. Whenever she tries to renegotiate anything of the contract, he tries to talk her out of it.
  • Reactionary Fantasy:
    • Some call the series 'progressive' for basically being porn for women, but it depicts and romanticizes a blatantly abusive relationship.
    • This also comes up in the series's portrayal of kinky sex and the BDSM lifestyle. It's supposed to be 'edgy' because it deals with the subject at all, but it's really pretty puritanical about it: Christian's sexual proclivities are the product of abuse and emotional damage, lead him to behave abusively toward Anastasia, and ultimately have to be exorcised so they can have a healthy relationship.
    • Another criticism by some is that the book is marketed as kinky and edgy, when the sex is actually pretty vanilla, especially when compared to what many people in BDSM do.
  • Revenge Fic: Spitefic based on Alternative Character Interpretations of Fifty Shades of Grey's Christian Grey is fairly popular. This ranges from playing up and then deconstructing his canonical Bastard Boyfriend traits to depicting him as a literal people-eating monster (which is kind of hilarious if you're familiar with 50 Shades' original inspiration.)
  • Sadist: Christian Grey.
  • Said Bookism: The series is very fond of 'murmur', even using it four times on one page. People are also fond of whispering things. Also, dialogue often gets tagged with actions, in some cases not by the actual speaker. This can make it quite hard to tell who's talking at any given time.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Anastasia Steele is entirely Christian Grey-sexual. At the age of 21, she never had attractions to men before meeting him and is not interested in other men.
  • Slut-Shaming:
    • Inverted. Christian talks of Ana's virginity as an "issue" or "an obstacle to be removed". Kate also mentions that she has been waiting for Ana to lose her virginity for 4 years (as if she had nothing better to do).
    • On the other hand, Ana herself tends to be uncomfortable with women having casual sex. At one point, she even worries that she's being a "kept woman" for Grey.
  • Stalking is Love:
    • The title character actually tracks Ana via her cellphone, which, in addition to being creepy, is kind of illegal.
    • In the same book, Grey also stalks Ana Steele across state lines when she goes to visit her mother in Savannah, Georgia. Ana calls it stalking, too; she's just unable to grasp that stalking is a bad thing.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Christian Grey's mother was presumably this (she was in her early twenties and he was four when he was taken from her, meaning that she likely would have been between fifteen and eighteen). This is never remarked upon.
  • Transplanted Character Fic: The wildly-successful erotic romance trilogy was ascended from a Twilight Transplanted Character Fic called "Master of the Universe".
  • Trend Covers: All three books in the trilogy have covers designed to resemble their original inspiration, with minimalist covers consisting of one symbolic object against a dark background.
  • Virgin Vision: Kate could just tell that Ana slept with Christian.
  • We All Live in America: The series is allegedly set in America. Despite this, there is no concession to the setting whatsoever. People refer to "exams" (not "finals"), and the very British "do go through" shows up. To get an idea of how bad this gets, the rifting of it at Das Sporking has a count, "Key and Trumpets", for every time EL James used British terminology or culture (Ana offering a delivery man tea or getting a casual house call from a doctor setting her up on birth control). By the end of the first book, the count was at 50. By the end of the second book (the count being reset for each novel), the count was at 106.
  • Web First: The series was heavily modified from a Twilight Fanfic.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math:
    • This happens multiple times. The most egregious example of this was E.L. James having Ana graduate on Thursday, May 27, 2011 (according to various emails, although in the real world, May 27, 2011 was a Friday) and then having Ana have interviews four days later on Monday, May 30. 27 + 4 =/= 30 in base 10. Monday would have been May 31—Memorial Day, a federal holiday on which most business offices would be closed.
    • Also, there's simply no way that Ana can interview Grey in early to mid-May, have five days pass, meet Grey in the hardware store in which she works on Saturday, have "several weeks pass"—so three weeks at the very least—have a week of finals and then graduate on May 27. Any way you look at it, you can't squeeze five weeks between two dates in the same month.

Also can the entry under Author Avatar on the Fifty Shades of Grey page be moved to the main page, since Author Avatar isn't a YMMV item.
