Tropes that apply to Red Sky:

  • Back Story: Each team member earns one as a Beginning story.
  • Curse: The in-universe explanation for the Nuzlocke rules. It turns out to be The Virus.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The Limited Palette variant. The illustrations for the comic are done in a faint red filter to tie in with the original game. There are a few exceptions to this such as Ninetales and the Team Rocket logo.
  • Gender Flip: A majority of the main characters, such as the Rival and the Gym Leaders, are the opposite gender.
  • Motif: The colour red. As mentioned above, the illustrations are always seen through a red filter. However other elements are focused around this colour as well, such as Team Rocket and their logo, Skye taking the role of Red in the game, and Red Eye.
    • Eyes are also given special mention. Skye used to have blue eyes before they became red. In terms of other characters, Cara has blue eyes while his mother and Francesca have golden eyes.
  • Nuzlocke Comics
  • Ship Tease: The most popular pairings seem to be BardxVesp or ShuixSov. The author has not let this go unnoticed.
  • True Companions
  • Where It All Began: Each team member returns home for their End story.

     The Team

Skye Chapelmount

A young boy from Pallet Town who wanted to begin his journey at ten, but was prohibited by his mom until he was fourteen. He is cowardly, lazy and not especially bright, but he loves his team and always tries his best.

Shui

A Bulbasaur with a daisy chain necklace. Like his Trainer, he is considerably lazy and by no means smart, but he's the nicest team member by far and tries his best to remain positive.

Lombardi

A Pidgey with spiky ruffled feathers. He has an enormous ego and loves to fight so he can prove himself. He's self-centered and concerned for his pride but is the closest thing the team has to a leader (even moreso than Skye.)

Vesper

A Beedrill with a torn wing and scars. She is a very selfish character who has frequent mood swings and prefers to act alone, but remains as arguably the best (and certainly the most enthusiastic) fighter on the team.

Sovereign

A male Nidoran with a 'royal' horn and spikes. He claims to be royalty (even amongst Nidoran standards) and has a gentlemanly and patient demeanor, though despite this he remains a competent battler.

Broseph

A Geodude with a pair of cracked sunglasses. He doesn't say much and keeps to himself.

Catsby

A thieving Meowth with street smarts and a love for raising mischief. He only serves as the 'HM Slave' of the team and thus he never participates in battles, but he hangs around as a valuable (if unreliable) member of the group. Unreliable as in 'working for Team Rocket.'

Astrid

A warrior Dratini who aspires to become a Dragonite one day. Despite her small size and frail demeanor, she can be an aggressive fighter. She has a strong sense of honour and justice.

Luna

A strange Venonat with her head in the clouds. Luna has hardly any social skills and acts with her own brand of madness. Despite this, she is a master of flora and fauna, as well as her own abilities with spores.

Finley

A totally radical Eevee who thinks this adventure thing is tubular. A fast talker and an even faster walker, Finley loves the thrill of battle. He hopes to become a Flareon one day.

Loch

A large grizzled Lapras with a cold demeanor. He speaks with a heavy Scottish accent (or the Pokemon world equivalent). He takes pride in being a huge immovable fighter who can take tons of punishment.

Cole

A lonely but defiant Growlithe. He was the runt of the litter, but managed to survive alone without any help. As such, he has trouble following orders, but he remains as a strong and aggressive battler.

     Gym Leaders

Amber

The first Gym Leader and a user of Rock types. As the first Gym Leader, she is a friendly and gratious battler. She is defeated in a Curb-Stomp Battle by Shui and his Vine Whip.

Hazey

The second Gym Leader and a user of Water types. He acts very crudely and often taunts or flirts with the competition, though he only does so because he loves to have fun. He is defeated by Shui and Sovereign, having recently evolved.

  • Memetic Sex God
  • Ship Tease: When Skye mentions Amber, Hazey says he wants to go 'exploring her mountains.' Take that as you will.

Lt. Spike

The third Gym Leader and a user of Electric types. A very tall and very mean woman who is a firm believer in "shock and awe." She is quick to anger and rarely shows sympathy, but she is genuinely proud of anyone who manages to beat her. She is defeated by Broseph. Her Raichu shouldn't have messed up his sunglasses.

Akire

     Other Characters

Cara Oak

Professor Oak's granddaughter and lifetime rival of Skye. She is a very snarky competitive girl who seems obsessed with battling him at every turn. She serves the same role as Blue/Gary.

Skye's Mom

The single parent mother to Skye. A former Trainer who fathered an ambigious amount of children but mothered Skye the most after his father and siblings left. She reluctantly lets him go at the age of fourteen. She used to be a trainer in Hoenn who was part of an experiment that would result in Red Eye.

Professor Samantha Oak

An experienced scientest who cares for Pokemon and distributes them to new trainers in Pallet Town.

The Ninetales

A mysterious Pokemon that curses Skye when he begins its journey. Its reasons and agenda (if any) are unknown.

Bonnie

The Gym Manager and the guide for Trainers hoping to win the badge, Bonnie is an old retired trainer who looks intimidating but always means well and usually has a useful tip or two.

  • Almighty Janitor: From her knowledge of the gyms and battling, it's clear that she was a formidable battler in the past. Lt. Spike seems to admire her in some way, even going so far as to salute her.
  • Cool Old Lady
  • Smoking Is Cool

Harry and Etta

A pair of Team Rocket operatives. Harry is a professional man who does the planning while Etta is a hyperactive woman who likes to act on impulse. They serve the same role as Jessie and James... Except they're much worse.

Bell Brent (the World Famous Professor Extrodinaire)

A young but gifted girl who lives in the Cerulean Cape, willing to do anything and everything to further the course of science. To her, being spliced into the body of a Clefairy is a "minor setback." She tries to help out Skye in finding out about Red Eye, as well as giving him the S.S. George ticket.
