The Boazanian Empire

    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Airborne Aircraft Carrier: Boazanian Flagships, Zoltan and Godol, all of them equipped with formidable weapons and even Deflector Shields.
  • All Planets Are Earth-Like: Played with. Sure, it's 18th-century France IN SPACE!, but the Boazanians are a Higher-Tech Species and thus have flying cars and advanced spacecraft.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: Very few Boazanians aren't cruel, haughty, racist sadists that want to enslave anyone who doesn't have a pair of horns on their head.
  • Aliens Speaking English: The Boazanians have their own language, but they have no issue communicating with humans in perfect Japanese.
    • A possible In-Universe explanation for this could be that since the Boazanians have technology to imitate voices and communicate to Beast Knights, they designed devices that makes Boazanian-to-human communication possible.
  • Alien Invasion: Zambajil has done this to multiple planets in the past, but when he tries to overtake the Earth, things don't go as expected.
  • All There in the Manual: At least two issues of OUT mention that Boazania is located in Messier 4, NGC 6121, Scorpio.
OUT, September 1979 issue: Boazania is located in a globular cluster (Messier 4, NGC 6121) in the direction of Scorpio, about 14,000 light-years away from the Earth. Boazania has completed a spaceship by warp, and is building a large space empire by colonizing nearby habitable planets one after another. The conquered planets had a political form similar to that of Earth's medieval Europe, where they became the fiefdoms of the nobles who commanded the conquering armies, which were also administered by the Boazanian emperor.
  • Amazing Technicolour Population: While most Boazanians are Human Aliens, there are red-skinned ones like Jangal and blue-skinned ones like Zuhl.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil:
    • Boazanians born with horns are highly regarded and form an aristocratic elite, while the hornless are forced into slavery and worked to death on physically demanding tasks such as mining and construction. While not all Horned Boazanians are bad, the vast majority of them treat their Hornless counterparts with severe cruelty.
    • Emperor Zambajil is a maniacal Planet Baron who spearheads Alien Invasions left and right for Boazania's sake. Zambajil also supports Boazania's Fantastic Caste System, that decrees those with them to live as nobles and those without them to live as slaves (it helps that this very caste system helped him usurp the throne from the true heir). As a noble, he looks down on slaves and wants to invade planets so that the number of Boazan slaves can increase tenfold.
    • Heinel, Zuhl, Katherine and Jangal are Horned Boazanians that look down on their Hornless counterparts and view humans as no different than flies. In their mission to colonize Earth, they kill a good chunk of the Earthern population, as well as key mentor figures to the Voltes team.
    • Belgan, Zaki and Gurul share this sentiment but also want to kill off Heinel because he committed the crime of...being born the legitimate heir of the throne.
  • Armies Are Evil: The Boazanian Military are Evil Space Colonialists that dehumanize foreign races and use them as fodder and slavery. They also persecute their own if they sympathize with their plight or try to help them.
  • The Beautiful Elite: The Boazanian nobles dress like French aristocrats. Expect each one to have fancy hair, frilly cravats, glitzy jewelry and pimped-out dresses.
  • Bilingual Bonus: "Boazan" is the Japanese pronunciation of the French word "Voisin", which means "neighbor".
  • Colonized Solar System: Conquering planets is a national pasttime for them at this point.
  • Conveniently Close Planet: Averted. Prince Gohl a.k.a. Kentaro Gō landed on Earth completely by accident. Jangal also expresses bewilderment that he landed on a planet so far away.
  • Culture Equals Costume:
    • As is the custom for noblewomen of the Boazanian Empire, Katherine wears a yellow veil over her horns. She doesn't bat an eye when Heinel cuts her veil, leaving half of it hanging on each horn. She also dresses in a Pimped-Out Dress, complete with jewelry.
    • Lozaria wears a yellow veil alongside a green ballgown and a feathery headpiece with a gem in the center.
    • Oral's wife wears a veil. It is notably wider than the veils of most Boazanian women due to her horns.
  • The Dog Bites Back: In the Grand Finale, the oppressed Boazanians rise up and take arms, terrorrizing the nobles into surrendering.
  • Dread Zeppelin: The Boazanians have a diverse array of airships, ranging from small saucers to the iconic Eldritch Starship Skullrook, as well as Belgan's ship, Zuhl's base, the Boazanian Defence Fleet and Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • Dub Name Change: In the Cuban Spanish dub, the Boazanian/Boazan Empire was known as the Balzán Empire.
  • The Elites Jump Ship: When the slaves of Boazania rebel (this time aided by Big Falcon and Voltes V) and manage to overtake most of the planet, the nobles desert en masse as Emperor Zambajil desperately tries to consolidate his power.
  • Equal-Opportunity Evil: Heinel's cadre consists of him, his lady, and two Boazanians of different skin colours.note  The only people barred from his ranks are humans and Hornless Boazanians.
  • The Empire: The Boazanian Empire is a Galactic Superpower that constantly expands by colonizing other planets.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: The Boazanians in general don't believe any species other than themselves is capable of love, as demonstrated when Zuhl reveals in Episode 13 that they are, and is immediately laughed off by Heinel, Katherine, and Jangal, much to his frustration before he explains how he intends to exploit that emotion against the Voltes V pilots.
  • Evil Colonialist: They relegate the citizens of the planets they invade to slaves while they sit on top of the hierarchy.
  • Evil Eyebrows: Heinel, Katherine, Jangal, Zuhl, Belgan, Zaki, Gurul, Zambajil and various unnamed nobles in the background have Evil Eyebrows.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: Belgan and Zaki have eyes in this manner, but it's unknown if they use cosmetics or if it's natural.
  • Fantastic Racism: The Boazanians with horns view themselves as superior to those who do not have horns. They also look down on humans and consider them primitive. This comes to bite them when Heinel attempts to take over Earth and finds out that humanity is far more evolved than he perceived.
  • Fantastic Caste System: Long ago, both horned and hornless Boazanians lived equally. However, at some point, a caste system began where the horned Boazanians were allowed to live the way they wanted to, while the hornless Boazanians were forced to toil as slaves until death.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: The Boazanian Empire is essentially 17th century Space France.
  • Fictional Flag: The Boazanian flag is dark blue, with a large yellow bird on the center. See here.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Sanguine: Heinel (Impulsive, confident and brash).
    • Choleric: Zuhl (Extroverted, short-tempered, and task-oriented, often callous and unemotional). After his death, this role goes to Belgan.
    • Melancholic: Jangal (Detailed, conservative, analytical and extremely loyal).
    • Phlegmatic: Katherine (Calm, humble, kind, passive and excellent at spying/assistance).
  • Flying Cutlery Spaceship: The Boazanians sometimes use their spaceships as weaponry against Voltes V, though this is often met by the robot crushing them in its palm.
  • Flying Saucer: Boazanian Flying Saucers are dark purple in colour, with light purple spikes and forest-green highlights.
  • Galactic Superpower: The Boazanian Empire expanded into the massive superpower it is today through conflict, oppression, colonization and bloodshed. To preserve this, they practice a culture of honour and war-glorification, with many Boazanians believing it is an honour to die in the line of duty for The Empire. One can only imagine what it would have grown to had Gohl not overthrown it.
  • Gorgeous Period Dress: Unsurprisingly, since they're based on the Bourgeoisie of 17th-century France. The female nobles have frilly dresses with puffy sleeves and laces, and the members of the Emperor's court wear uniforms consisting of cravats, epaulettes, cufflinks, aiguilettes and capes. On a meta level, it's likely because Tadao Nagahama also directed The Rose of Versailles.
  • Gratuitous French: If you speak French, you'll catch a lot of this trope when in regards to the Boazanian Empire, an Alien Empire that's a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to France. Their name, Boazanians, is derived from the French word "Voisin" (neighbour), and Prince Gohl's name is derived from "Gaul" (name for olden France).
  • Higher-Tech Species: Boazanian technology can teleport objects, imitate voices, and turn animals into massive, ruthless beasts. Not to mention, the titular robot was also created by a Boazanian.
  • Horned Humanoid: Heinel, Zambajil, Katherine, Dange, Zaki, Belgan, Lozaria and the vast majority of Boazanian nobility. Those without them are basically screwed.
  • Horns of Barbarism: The cruel, elitist upper-class nobles are horned.
  • Horns of Villainy: The noble class of Boazania are horned, and use them as an excuse to deem the hornless Boazanians as inferior. Their hatred of humans also stem from the fact that humans resemble hornless Boazanians.
  • Human Aliens: Subverted. The only thing separating Boazanians from ordinary humans is the presence of horns and Amazing Technicolour Population. Though, some Boazanians have tails.
  • Industrialized Evil: The main reason they conquer other planets is to turn their populace into slaves that the nobles can work to death.
  • Inhumanly Beautiful Race: Subverted. While every female Boazanian shown so far fulfills this trope, the male Boazanians range from Gonks like Jangal and Zuhl to Pretty Boys like Heinel. Quite a few background characters also subvert this trope.
  • Letter Motif: Most of the Boazanian males follow a pattern of naming where their names and with "-l" - Heinel, Jangal, Zuhl, Zambajil, Oral, Gohl, Doyle and Gurul. A few of these names are also puns - Heinel is a pun on "your highness", Jangal is a pun on "Jingo", Gohl is a pun on "Gaul" and Gurul is a pun on "Kurultai".
  • Little Bit Beastly: The horned Boazanians have horns that resemble those of animals.
  • Lizard Folk: The Boazanian Mooks are blue-skinned troops that have silver armour and lizard tails.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Expect every female Boazanian noble to have long hair. This trope also applies to some of the males such as Heinel, Zambajil, Oral and Zaki.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Boazan" is the Japanese pronouncation of the word "voisin", which is the French for "neighbour". Sure enough, they neighbour Earth by 14,000 light years.
  • Mind Rape: In episode 34, it's shown that to convince the humans to turn into slaves, the Boazanians Mind Rape them. Oddly, they don't do this to the hornless Boazanians, which could imply they're immune.
  • Named After Their Planet: The inhabitants of Planet Boazania are called Boazanians, separated into the "Horned" class and the "Hornless" class.
  • Noble Demon: While the vast majority of Boazanian nobles are evil assholes, the named soldiers/warriors are mostly this. There are several Boazanian soldiers that show honor in their own way, even Jangal, while Heinel's experience in war and insistence to prove himself granted him some sense of honor. Taken further, General Dange was a Horned Boazanian who had enough of the whole Fantastic Caste System's cruelty. He broke off his horns and became a Defector from Decadence.
  • No Communities Were Harmed: They are a clear parallel to the Bourgeoisie of the French revolution.
  • Planetary Nation: The Boazanian government system is dictated by a Monarchy.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: They only take the most strongest of humans as slaves and eliminate the weaker ones. They also take every chance they can to use slaves to break the morale of Big Falcon and the Voltes team, who are humanity's last stand against them.
  • The Proud Elite: The Horned Boazanians believe that their race is the best and that their oppression is morally right. Heinel has an especially bad case of this. When Zambajil turns on the Empire, most of the Horned Boazanians scatter and run to the rebels, begging for mercy, with him being a significant exception.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: This trope is most prominent in Heinel and Jangal, but it's a common belief held by the Boazanians as they view all the other planets and their races as beneath them.
  • Schizo Tech: The Boazanians managed to develop sub-lightspeed spaceship drives but were unable to apply the technology elsewhere, hence the use of Battle Beasts and atomic/nuclear conventional weaponry.
  • Single Language Planet: Episode 8 states that "Boazanian" is a language.
  • Slave Race: The hornless Boazanians for centuries, and later, the humans.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil:
    • The Boazanians aim to turn the inhabitants of the planets they conquer into Slave Races.
    • Even their own fellow Boazanians aren't safe. Born in Boazania and got two horns sticking out? No? Then prepare for a life of pariah-esque slavery supporting the planet's thriving galactic tourism industry.
  • Skeleton Motif: Several times over. Skullrook is shaped like a Boazan skull, and in Gohl's flashback, the man officiating his coronation has a staff with a skull on it.
  • Space Elves: Inhumanly Beautiful Race? Check! Look down on humans? Check! Advanced technology and militaries? Check! The latter is subverted, however - while the Boazanians do have technology that's far more advanced than that of humans, they also severely underestimate how far the human race has evolved.
  • Space Romans: Boazanian society is an Expy of 17th-Century France, right at the point where tensions between the Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat are at an all-time high.
  • Take Over the World: Their goal is to assimilate every planet in the galaxy under Boazanian rule.
  • Technologically Advanced Foe: Despite their Medieval France aesthetic, the Boazanian Empire is advanced in technology compared to the humans. You know they're seriously good when it was a Boazanian that created Voltes V.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Both ways.
    • The Hornless Boazanians (such as Dange and Kentaro/Gohl) can blend in as humans without arousing suspicion.
    • Since the matter of horns is only a physical difference, Gohl gets by using prosthetic ones. Until he's outed.
  • Ugly Hero, Good-Looking Villain: Downplayed and subverted. Kenichi is far from "ugly", but his features are rather plain. However, his wide eyes and sideburns provide their own level of handsomeness. In contrast, Daijirou and Hiyoshi's features are garden varietynote , Megumi is a Yamato Nadeshiko and Ippei is a Long-Haired Pretty Boy Cowboy. However, Heinel and Katherine are both cases of Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon that dress in Pelts of the Barbarian and Fairytale Wedding Dress respectively, while Zuhl, Jangal and Gurul are Gonks. Belgan has Creepy Shadowed Undereyes and Zambajil dresses so lavishly it looks ridiculous.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: In one episode the Boazanians are gobsmacked to find out Earthlings have the capacity to love; their Fantastic Racism had them think that humans were no different from insects in terms of feelings. They burst out laughing when Zuhl informs them that yes, humans do love each other.

    Emperor Zambajil

Emperor Zambajil Zu (皇帝ズ・ザンバジル)

Zambajil
Young
The leader of the Boazan Empire, Emperor Zambajil was the bastard child of the previous Emperor before clawing power away from the rightful heir. Under him, the Empire has become conquest hungry and cruel, treating other races as bugs to be squashed.
  • Alliterative Name: Ignoring Inconsistent Spelling, Emperor Zambajil Zu.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • According to the September 1979 issue of 月刊OUT, when Prince Heinel was born, Zambajil wanted him eliminated. However, Oral, the Emperor's younger brother, used his power to prevent this.
    • According to Tadao Nagahama: Robot Romance Animation Chronicle Infobook, Zambajil grew up with cold gazes from those around him due to being the son of a concubine. He was also jealous of Gohl ever since they were children because he was a handsome and clever boy.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Zambajil flip-flops with this trope. On one hand, he desires to conquer the entire galaxy under the Boazanian Empire, and also wants to be on top of the Royal Family hierarchy. On the other hand, he's incredibly lazy, has no special skills in particular and half-asses important duties until they exacerbate and become too difficult to contain. When Gohl leads a slave rebellion in the Grand Finale, Zambajil panics and instantly tries to abandon ship, instead of staying and fighting like Heinel.
  • Bastard Bastard: Zambajil is the illegitimate son of the previous Emperor and his concubine, and he is a power hungry man who de-legitimized Gohl by exposing his fake horns and seized the throne as the new emperor. He's also a nasty piece of work to his nephew, who genuinely loves him.
  • The Caligula: He is a Narcissist who's biggest fear is that one day, someone will usurp the throne from him, just like he did with Prince Gohl, the true heir to the throne. Both his own family members and the Boazanian citizenry are treated with cruelty under his rule, and the only people he favours are members of his court. That is, until there's a threat to Boazania and he sends them to die one by one to save his own skin.
  • Create Your Own Hero: On a broader scale, his actions of exposing Prince Gohl as a hornless Boazan lead to a chain of events from the fallen prince's exile to Earth up to the creation of Voltes V, his greatest obstacle in his quest for universal domination.
  • Dirty Coward: When chips are down against him, he's shaking with fear and tried to run for his life only carrying his riches and blamed Heinel for the whole invasion. Just one of the many reasons why Heinel threw his knife right on his chest.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Catalan Spanish dub, his name was changed to Bacul.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Imperatore Zambazir.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his first in-person appearance, Zambajil berates his chief advisor for not saying his ridiculously long greetingnote , showing that he cares about his own title and status over everything else, and he doesn't take those below him seriously unless they're Professional Butt Kissers.
  • Evil Is Petty: Apart from planning to kill Heinel, he has his court insult and humiliate him. This backfires for him as it tips off Katherine about his true intentions.
  • Evil Laugh: Does one as he tells Voltes V and Big Falcon to die.
  • Evil Overlord: Zambajil is of the Orcus on His Throne variant. He upholds the same system that oppresses those on the lower rungs of the Fantastic Caste System and has his own cult of personality. While he isn't talented in combat, he holds the most power out of all the Boazanian nobles and oversees every move of The Empire. Despite his own underlings revering him, even they aren't safe from his tyranny. And God help you if he thinks you're a rival to the throne.
  • Evil Uncle: To Heinel.note  And Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi.
  • Glass of Chianti: He is often seen drinking a certain red-pink liquid in a wine glass. It hasn't been specified if it's wine or some Boazanian delicacy.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Gender-inverted and subverted. While Heinel is a Boazanian supremacist who thinks nothing of taking innocent lives in the conquest to colonize Earth, he is generally more respectful and forgiving to his comrades, giving praise to them for their skills, and personally went to save Katherine after she confronted Kenichi. When he realizes he has been fighting against his own family he has a My God, What Have I Done? moment. In contrast, Zambajil has a huge case of Lack of Empathy and doesn't care about anyone other than himself.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Had he not usurped the throne from Gohl and had him humiliated and Made a Slave, encouraged the Boazanian Fantastic Caste System to his own benefit, launched several campaigns dedicated to dehumanizing and enslaving the inhabitants of other planets, and manipulated Prince Heinel into becoming his pawn by using his bloodline against him, the events of Voltes V never would have happened.
  • Hate Sink: Zambajil has zero redeeming qualities whatsoever, as he was driven by greed for universal conquests and bigotry towards the hornless citizens of Boazania.
  • Hypocrite: Zambajil belittles Heinel as his father is the traitor Gohl, but in the Grand Finale he attempts to desert Boazania with a wagonload of riches because it's clear his side is losing.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Zambajil, Sambajil, Zanbazir, Zambojil, Zambujil, Zambajir, Sanbasilnote  or Sanbazil? For what it's worth, the Philippine live action adaptation calls him Zambojil.
  • Jerkass: Trying to find a single good thing in Zambajil is trying to find a needle in a haystack, except the needle doesn't exist. Racism, classism, bigotry and attempted fratricide/nepitocide, he is the one of the vilest villains the Robot Romance Trilogy has to offer.
  • Light Is Not Good: Zambajil has blonde hair. He's also destroyed the lives of many in his conquest to become the Boazan Emperor and assert his power.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Zambajil orders Zaki to make Heinel's death look like an accident, so that he won't have any rivals to the throne. Zaki in turn orders Zuhl to sabotage Heinel in his upcoming duel with Voltes V. However Katherine neutralizes the attempt, frustrating them. In a twist of Dramatic Irony, the assassination attempt ends up claiming Zaki instead.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: One of the ways to render Zambajil's name in rōmaji is "Sanbasil" or "San Basil", which implies Zambajil was named after St. Basil the Great.note
  • Narcissist: Zambajil is of the "power-hungry" variant. He is also ridiculously petty at times, such as refusing to listen to Gurul's important announcement because he forgot to say his Extended Greeting.
Gurul: Emperor! I have urgent news!
Zambajil: General Gurul! You shall not set foot in my court without giving me the proper respect! Start over!
Gurul:: Yes, my apologies, your highness! (presses heels together, stares at the cieling and salutes Zambajil) All that I do and all that I am is for the glory of the illustrious reign of Emperor Zu Zambajil!
Zambajil: Much better. Proceed with your report.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: He doesn't even ACT on his own or fight, only giving orders.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Zambajil has no special talents or skills and was handed everything to him due to his birthright. This stands out as even his fellow nobles have some sort of gift or talent.note
  • Planet Baron: Since Boazania is ruled by a Monarchy, Zambajil becomes the Planet Baron after the 123rd Emperor. However, to do this, he had to orchestrate the arrest of the true heir, his cousin, by exposing his lack of horns. His biggest fear is his nephew, Prince Heinel, usurping the throne from him in a similar fashion.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He has Gohl imprisoned because he wants to use his genius to build more weapons to strengthen The Empire. This is considerably the only intelligent thing he's ever done throughout the whole series.
  • Princeling Rivalry: Zambajil wants Heinel dead because he is the true heir to the throne. He knocked his father out of the game by exposing him for his lack of horns, and intended to get rid of Heinel by sending him to invade Earth. To his frustration, his nephew is actually quite competent at warfare and just won't die.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: All this time, Zambajil has been plotting, scheming, and sabotaging Heinel at every turn in the hope that he'd get killed for fear of being killed by him. All this despite Heinel treating him with nothing but respect. This then leads to Heinel killing him in the end, just as he'd feared.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both him and Heinel love drinking an unnamed red/pink drink that resembles wine.
  • Smug Snake: Zambajil resorts to Evil Gloating before the dust has settled, which comes to bite him as his underestimation of the human race is why they manage to upturn his forces.
  • Son of a Whore: While his father was royalty, his mother was a concubine.
  • Stupid Evil: Zambajil could be the poster boy for this trope.
    • Heinel has nothing but respect for Zambajil, and never showed any intent of taking the throne from him. However, Zambajil projects his own feelings of greed and power on to him, and secretly plots his demise.
    • Oh, and Heinel's father, who Zambajil had imprisoned and enslaved? He also happened to the Boazanian Minister of Science and Technology, and his absence causes the strength of the Boazanian military's weaponry to heavily detoriate.
    • Many fanfics have pointed out that since Zambajil has no children of his own, killing Heinel would trigger a Succession Crisis.
    • Zambajil makes all his cronies utter an absurdly long greeting before talking to him, which becomes a tad bit inconvient when Gurul tells him that their planet is potentially under attack by Voltes V. Keep in mind even Heinel doesn't do this, and he's literally named after the form of address "your highness".
    • When the tables turn on him in the Grand Finale, he tries to escape with a wagonload of riches and a grenade, which Heinel uses to kill him with.
    • As mentioned before, Heinel also graduated at the top of the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare, is the only one competent enough to lead the Earthern Invasion, is a Master Swordsman and an excellent Humongous Mecha pilot. He would be an extremely useful ally to Zambajil, and had he given him his favour, in the Grand Finale Heinel would have successfully thwarted the Voltes Team and killed Kenichi, thus ensuring Zambajil would be able to keep his rule. Zambajil's biggest obstacle was his own narcissism and inability to view others as equals, and as such, he receives a Karmic Death at the hands of Heinel himself.
  • The Usurper: This is how Emperor Zambajil ascended to the throne. The true heir, Prince Gohl, was born without horns, which would mean that under the Boazanian Caste System, he was to be a slave. Nevertheless, Gohl's parents hid this Awful Truth by giving him prosthetic horns. Zambajil tracked down the doctor that delivered the Prince and tortured him for information, with him admitting that Gohl was hornless.
  • Torture Always Works: Zambajil has his goons torture the doctor that delivered Gohl/Kentaro Go into confessing that he is a hornless Boazanian and his "horns" are prosthetic.
  • We Have Reserves: Emperor Zambajil does not care if his own troops get within range of his Doomsday Device, as long as Voltes V is defeated.

    Prince Heinel
    Katherine Rii

Katherine Rii (リー・カザリーン)

Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/katherine_rii_2a.png
Katherine Rii

One of Prince Heinel's direct underlings, she cultivates the life-forms that the scientists use to make Beast Knights, occasionally taking a command position. Although she has no issue with the invasion, by the end of the series, she tries to convince Heinel to give up on the empire and run away with her instead. She is deeply in love with Heinel despite refusing to say it directly, and her deep concern for the Prince's safety saves his life several times through the series.

  • Aerith and Bob: Heinel, Jangal, Zuhl and Katherine.
  • Allegiance Affirmation: She refuses to budge when Heinel brings down his sword on her, stating that she will give her life to the cause. Heinel is unable to bring himself to go further, and only cuts her veil.
    • Once again, in episode 36, after Gurul and Belgan reveal to Heinel that Zambajil's true intentions upon sending him to earth, Heinel has a temporary Villanous Bso D. After he regains his composure, he tells Katherine and Jangal to put their trust in him. Both state they will stay by his side, and do.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • According to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Katherine's mother was Heinel's wet nurse/nanny. After Heinel's maternal grandparents died, the Rii family raised him alongside Katherine. It also states that as children, Katherine saw Heinel being bullied and felt protective of him, and that the two were childhood friends. The Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection also states that she is older than Heinel, and that her birthday is May 1.
    • Katherine and Heinel being Childhood Friends is reinforced in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3rd, where one Boazanian slave remarks to another that he heard they were raised together. Heinel confirms this.
    • According to Keibunsha Encyclopedia of Monsters, 53rd edition, Katherine's height is 168cm and her weight is 49 kilograms.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted, in episode 30, Katherine sports a nasty scar on her face after her short brawl with Kenichi. Heinel has one too, and is later seen bandaged.
  • Blind Obedience: Subverted. Katherine was fervently loyal to Heinel at the start of the anime, and agreed to carry out anything he ordered. But when she learns that Heinel's bloodlust is so extreme that he is willing to shed his own, she is horrified and secretly tries to save him.
  • Big Sister Instinct: As children, Katherine saw Heinel being bullied by their fellow nobles, which triggered this trope. Even as adults, when Heinel is the commander of the Earth Invasion Force, she still views him as needing her protection.
  • Blue Blood: Like Heinel, she is from a noble family. However, hers isn't royalty.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Subverted, as her crush on Heinel existed long before she became his aide. Katherine averts several assassination attempts on his life due to his position, with the help of Jangal.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Played with. Heinel is closed-off to anyone not in his circle, and speaks to his fellow Boazanians with a grandiose aura. Katherine shares the Upper-Class Twit attitude most Boazanians have, but she's a friendlier and open person than him and even changes her mind about the war later on. There's also the fact that Katherine isn't honour-obsessed like Heinel and Jangal, preferring a more empathetic appraoch to outcasts like Heinel and Girion.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She clearly likes Heinel but masks it as loyalty to his cause. Funnily enough, Everyone Can See It. Everyone....except Heinel.
  • Cassandra Truth: When she tells Heinel that Zambajil wants to kill him, he is enraged and doesn't believe her. However, when Heinel finds out Katherine was telling the truth, he calls Zambajil a "maggot" and kills him.
  • Character Development: Katherine's character arc is learning that War Is Hell and not the glorified conflict her culture portrays it as. After the loss of her Only Friend apart from Heinel, Jangal, the execution of Girion, her own units deserting her and the chances of Boazan victory looking very bleak, Katherine is horrified by the mass amount of bloodshed she's been involved in and begs Heinel to reconsider fighting in the war. When Heinel refuses, saying he has to do it for his honour, she forcibly tranquilizes him and brings him to safety. She refuses to let him die in conflict, going through extreme lengths to keep him alive. Remember in the third episode how Katherine stated that she was willing to give her life to the cause? In the Grand Finale she defies that, pulling herself away from the cause and giving her life to something more important to her - Heinel.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: According to supplementary material, Katherine knew Heinel since they were both children. She secretly harboured a crush on him, but he never realized it until she died.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Non-romantic example. When Zambajil sends Belgan to Heinel to replace Zuhl, Katherine gets upset and asks him if her and Jangal are of no use to him. She is relieved when Heinel tells her he had no part in Belgan's deployment.
  • Clothing Damage: In Episode 3, Heinel punishes his minions for losing to Voltes V by subjecting them to his sword. While Jangal defends himself and Zuhl flinches, Katherine refuses to move, leading to her veil being cut in half.
  • Co-Dragons: Jangal and Katherine are the two people that Heinel trusts the most, hence them being his Co-Dragons. Jangal is the only aide of Heinel's that Katherine never suspects of being an assassin, and likewise, he appreciates Katherine's protective instincts towards him and works with her to ensure his safety.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In case her first plan to kill Kenichi didn't work, she has a Plan B, Plan C, Plan D, Plan E and a Plan F in the form of a convenient dagger. She also has a rocket that has enough rations to last years if she ever wants to bail on the Boazanian's whole "war to the death" thing.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Downplayed with the "monster" features since at best, she's very human-looking with the exception of having two, long horns, but Katherine qualifies. She's very pretty and excitable, even if she is a cruel, noble Boazanian.
  • Dark Action Girl: Downplayed as Katherine would prefer to sit in the sidelines while watching chaos unfold, but she knows how to fight. Her interaction with Kenichi shows that she knows how to wield a dagger.
  • Devious Daggers: After her plot to assassinate Kenichi fails, Katherine tries to finish the job by producing a dagger hidden in her clothing.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English, American-English, Brazilian Portuguese and Catalan dubs change her name to Zandra.
    • In the Italian and Greek dubs, her name was changed to Kazarine.note
  • Dude Magnet: Belgan and Heinel have eyes for her. Unfortunately, the latter only realizes this when she dies.
  • Dumb Blonde: Inverted. Katherine refuses to follow Zambajil's orders blindly, unlike Heinel, and correctly pieces that he's trying to kill him out of their Princeling Rivalry. She works together with Jangal to make sure this doesn't happen. Apart from that, she's a skilled scientist, a pragmatic strategist and an elite spy.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: After she takes the bullet for Heinel and he begs her not to die, she expresses happiness seeing him hold her.
Katherine: "I wish it could be like this forever."
  • Everyone Can See It: Belgan expresses frustration about her obsession with Heinel.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: Katherine dons a necklace strung together with golden beads. In the middle is a blue gemstone.
  • Evil Genius: Katherine's talents lie in espionage and biozoology, with Heinel mentioning that she's been studying life forms on Earth to create better Beast Knights. However, the "evil" part is disputable. Katherine, for the most part, was Just Following Orders and actually wanted out of the war because she saw that it had no positive ending. She tried her best to convince Heinel of this fact, but it takes longer for him to realize this. It doesn't help that her death drives him into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge and he vows to kill Kenichi.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Much like Heinel, Katherine is a gorgeous noble that dresses lavishly. Her kindness towards Heinel is also genuinely heartwarming to see. However, she also looks down on humans and laughs at the idea that they can feel love. As the series progresses, Katherine later abandons the war, wanting peace and welcoming the revolution brought by Gohl and the hornless Boazanians in favour of fleeing the planet. The fact that she felt horrified for Girion and cried at Jangal's death shows that she has a Hidden Heart of Gold, subverting this trope.
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: Her dress is blue and has pink frills at the hems, as do her Regal Ruff and sleeves.
  • Flirty Stepsiblings: Played with. While Heinel was taken in by Katherine's family after his grandparents died, they do not consider themselves stepsiblings. Heinel often refers to Katherine as a friend in Super Robot Wars. The aforementioned book does too, stating that Katherine befriended Heinel when she saw him being bullied and felt protective of him.
  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: Katherine's fan has baby pink outer feathers, with a different layer of bubblegum pink in the innards. It is purple at the root. The fan usually has four, five or six feathers depending on the frame. It's feathers heavily resembles that of a peacock's. She sometimes uses the fan to hide her face as she laughs.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Noriko Ohara speaks in the Keigo dialect when voicing Katherine, which makes her stand out from Heinel's other aides.
  • Hair Color Dissonance: Katherine's hair appears to be bright ginger in the official DVD illustration.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Heinel attacks some nobles fleeing the Boazanian imperial palace at the end of the series, she knocks him out of the way and takes a fatal energy blast that was intended to kill him, dying in his arms.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Katherine was all too happy to join the campaign for the Boazanians to invade the Earth, but she doesn't have the spirit to keep fighting the war. Despite being proud of her Boazanian heritage, Katherine draws the line at punishing their own allies for supposedly betrayingnote  them and rightfully calls out Heinel's truculence. After her death, when Heinel realizes that she was Right All Along, he lets the flames consume him, selflessly saving Kenichi before perishing.
  • Hot Consort: She is one of the Prince's aides and implied to be in love with him. Her default dress also heavily resembles a bride gown, with the long, white, frilly dress that has a train that spills all over the floor, Regal Ringlets and veil.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Katherine or Katharine? Even Super Robot Wars isn't sure, as Super Robot Wars Advance goes with the former and Super Robot Wars J goes with the latter.
    • This extends to her surname (リー) too. Is it Rii, Ri or Rhi? Some sources even spell it as Lee.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Despite her appearance, Katherine is capable of putting up a fight, and once tried to stab Kenichi with a dagger when she managed to corner him. However she prioritizes strategy during battle, and would rather escape from harm rather than take it head-on.
  • Lady and Knight: Katherine is the Proper Lady to Heinel's Warrior Prince. To emphasize the "Lady" part, while Heinel usually wields a sword, Katherine often holds a fan.
  • Lady of War: She hails from a noble family, loves dressing glamorously, owns a dagger, and uses her knowledge of science to manufacture Beast Knights to terrorize Voltes V. She's also skilled at espionage, something her own allies aren't safe from.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Katherine's hair goes past her hips, and is covered by her veil.
  • Maker of Monsters: Katherine mutates ordinary Earthern creatures into becoming Beast Knights. Usually, Zuhl chooses the brains of the monster while Katherine chooses the bodies. With the arrival of Belgan, the Beast Knights undergo a Mid-Season Upgrade and become armoured.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Not in the show proper, but the anime's official art book Super Electromagentic Voltes V Information (published 1978, by Tokuma Shouten) featured a nude sketchnote  of Katherine striking a pose with her breasts out, while she was surrounded by roses.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: She is named after Caterina de Medici, the Queen Consort of France. Meanwhile, "de Pharoa" refers to the Egyptian word "Pharaoh", which originally meant "Great House"note  but was metonymically used to mean "Egyptian King" in modern usage.
  • Nice Girl: Yes, really. When she's with her fellow Boazans, she's very cheery and affectionate.
  • Ojou: The Rii family are nobles. Unlike their fellow elite, they didn't discriminate against Heinel based on his heritage, and were good friends with his grandparents. After their death, the Rii family raised Heinel as if he was one of their own.
  • Ojou Laugh: Katherine is a noble lady and her laugh is a heavy Ojou Laugh. She tends to cover her face with her fan whenever she's laughing.
    Katherine: Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohhh!
  • Only Sane Woman: Between Heinel (a warmongering, bloodthirsty knight), Jangal (a honour-obsessed jingoist), Zuhl and Belgan (turncoats interested in their own agendas), Katherine wants nothing more than her and Heinel to be safe. After she witnessed the atrocities of war firsthand, including the Execution of Beast Knight Girion and the death of her comrade Jangal, she began having second thoughts about the war. This is further exacerbated after the humans gain advantages over the Boazanian's forces. The final straw is witnessing Heinel's uncontrollable desire for victory at the cost of his own safety, realizing that it will eventually get him killed, and she shoots him with a tranquilizer before he can do anything drastic.
  • Overly Long Name: The Voltes V Roman Album Art book reveals that her full name is Katherine de Pharoah Rii.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In Episode 31, Katherine tries to lure Kenichi from his base by posing as an innocent Boazanian slave rebel. Not a bad plan, except....her disguise to hide her horns is merely a white sheet. It doesn't help that Katherine's horns are very tall, which makes it look even more obvious. The fact that Kenichi doesn't question it is darkly comical.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Katherine's clothing takes inspiration from the fashion that 18th century French noblewomen wore. Her blue dress extends past the floor and her collar is especially pimped-out.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Her schemes to expose traitors amongst Heinel's castle is to allow them to make fools out of themselves in public, while her and Heinel observe them from afar.
  • Properly Paranoid: Katherine's suspicions about Zaki, Zuhl and Belgan are proven right when they try to harm and overthrow Heinel once they get the chance.
  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Katherine encourages this to Beast Knight Garus, chiding it for playing with a dog rather than killing it. She later drops this mindset after watching Girion's execution.
  • Regal Ringlets: Katherine has long blonde hair, a French braid, and two thin ones on the side of her head.
  • Regal Ruff: Katherine's collar is pink and covers her shoulders. It also matches the pink ruffles under her blue dress and sleeves.
  • Robot Master: Katherine is skilled at commanding and constructing robots.
  • Sexy Secretary: Katherine is Heinel's right hand, and quite a few times, she functions as Heinel's actual secretary, relaying messages to and from the Emperor's Court. She is also a beautiful lady, something Belgan comments on.
Belgan, pouring a drink: "For a beautiful woman."
  • Ship Tease: In many pieces of merchandise associated with the show, Heinel and Katherine are often depicted together. See herenote  and herenote
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Like Heinel, Katherine dresses like a fancy aristocrat, but is capable of fighting like a warrior when she has to. Unlike Heinel, who confronts people directly, Katherine would rather lure out her opponents when they're defenseless and strike them when they least expect it.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Katherine really pulls out all the stops in her plan to kill Kenichi. First she tries to have his head bashed in with a revolving blunt object attached to the cieling. Then, she tries to blow up the church. Then, she tries to attack him with a dagger. Then, she tries to eliminate him by entering her spaceship and shooting at him repeatedly. And you know Kenichi really won the luck lottery when none of them manage to even touch him.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Katherine is the only girl in The Boazanian Empire's Earth Invasion Force. Belgan lampshades this, saying that women don't belong in war.
  • True Blue Femininity: Subverted. Her dress is mainly blue, but pink underneath. The dress bodice has two pink laces that cover the front. Her sleeve's ruffles and collar are also pink.
  • Unholy Matrimony: A tragic example as she pined for Heinel ever since they were children, while he didn't realize that he was in love with her until he held her dying body in his embrace.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She's always on the lookout for any potential enemies and has creative ways of ousting them. Even though Heinel tends to disregard her, at times he understands that she is Properly Paranoid and expresses his gratefulness to her.
  • Women Are Wiser: Subverted. Though Katherine is the only one of Heinel's aides who eventually comes to realize the futility of war, there are quite a few times where she behaves recklessly and lets her temper get the better of her. She's also so desperate to save Heinel that she doesn't care when it puts her own life in danger.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In episode 7, she laughs sadistically at the thought of murdering Hiyoshi Go due to him being separated from his teammates, even though he is ten years old. In Mr. Sakame's flashback of Heinel holding his daughter hostage, Katherine is seen with him, though her complicity in that situation is unclear.
  • You Are Worth Hell: Even when Heinel tells her to leave for her own good, she vows to stand by him no matter what.

Jangal Rui (ルイ・ジャンギャル)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jangal_rui_from_voltes_v.png
Jangal Rui

The main military commander of Heinel's forces on earth, he usually leads the Beast Knights into battle and surveys the field from the combination space ship/skull castle, Skull Rook. Though not the most intelligent of commanders, he does try a variety of tactics throughout the series and comes up with a plan to confirm whether or not the Gou siblings are truly half Boazanian, thanks to some of Katherine's bacteria. He is highly loyal to Heinel. He is also notable for being the only Boazanian depicted with three horns, although whether this means anything is uncertain.

  • Acrofatic: Jangal is on the heavy side and has a prominent beer belly, but he's still capable of fighting and leading armies.
  • All There in the Manual: According to Keibunsha Encyclopedia of Monsters, 53rd edition, Jangal's height is 250cm and his weight is 110 kilograms.
  • Allegiance Affirmation: In episode 36, after Gurul and Bergan reveal to Heinel that Zambajil's true intentions upon sending him to earth, Heinel has a temporary Villanous Bso D. After he regains his composure, he tells Katherine and Jangal to put their trust in him. Both state they will stay by his side and do.
  • And Your Little Dog, Too!: In episode 14, he holds Professor Hamaguchi hostage in exchange for the dismantling of Voltes V. It ends with Hamaguchi performing a Heroic Sacrifice to save the Voltes team.
  • Big Red Devil: Jangal resembles Satan. However, he's a nicer person than the Old Scratch, treating those around him with friendliness and giving praise to people even if they're his enemies.
  • The Brute: Like Heinel, Jangal is a Card-Carrying Villain who expresses glee at harming humans. Jangal usually leads Heinel's Mooks and actually does try to take on the humans in one-one combat.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English, American-English and Brazilian Portuguese dubs change his name to Draco.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Gael.
    • In the Catalan dub, his name was changed to Draco Rei.
    • In the Korean dub, his name was Janga.
  • Destination Defenestration: In Episode 9, when the infiltration of the Earth Defense HQ fails, he escapes from the Okas in this fashion. The tractor beam of Skullrook ensures he gets out of this safely.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Heinel orders the execution of Girion, he looked aghast, and even Katherine turned away, unable to watch the execution.
  • Expy: Design wise, Jangal is near-identical to Girua of Combattler V, with both being burly, fanged Big Red Devils. However, Jangal is on the fatter side, has three horns (Girua has two) and has more personality, as well as a more prominent role in the story.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Jangal has four.
  • Seppuku: When the Emperor betrays Heinel and orders his forces to leave, he stays behind in the castle to fight the Voltes team. After they defeat him in a duel, he asks them to pass him his sword, so he can break it on his knee before surrendering - whereupon he immediately kills himself with it as an honorable Boazanian. Since the crew was kind enough to let him do so, he willingly informs them that Dr. Go is no longer in the castle.
  • Hidden Depths: From his devil-like appearance and behaviour in the earlier episodes, you'd believe Jangal is a mere brute and Yes-Man to Heinel. However over the course of the series it's shown that Jangal is incredibly patient, is capable of conceding to the opposing party when they have a point, never loses his temper and acts irrationally unlike his comrades, shows respect to the Voltes Team and even helps them find the Go brother's father. He doesn't look down on Heinel for his bloodline or age like the rest of the nobles do, and always tries his best to help him. He also expressed sadness and sympathy for Girion after Heinel had him executed.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Some translations refer to his name as Jean-gall Louis or Jangyal.
  • Master Swordsman: Jangal wields an Absurdly Sharp Blade as his main weapon in combat.
  • Manly Facial Hair: Jangal has bushy, black facial hair and a beard. Fitting as he's The Brute amongst Heinel's aides, though deep down he's a softie.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Heinel is the noble male to Jangal's roguish male. In a subversion of stereotypes, the roguish one is more merciful in contrast.
  • Punny Name: His name is possibly a pun on Jingo, which fits as he is unwaveringly loyal to Heinel in spite of all the atrocities he commits.
  • The Rival: A minor case, as Zuhl seems to have a petty squabble with Jangal. He hates how Jangal is a Yes-Man to Heinel's whims and feels as if Heinel prefers him, thus making his role in the hierarchy of power lower. When Zuhl bites the dust and he's replaced by Belgan, Belgan also expresses similar sentiments.
  • Rugged Scar: Jangal has one across his left eye. It's never explained how he received it.
  • Satan Is Good: Downplayed. Jangal is a brute who fights for the Boazanian Empire, but as far as personalities go, he's a nice guy. He holds no ill will towards Heinel for torturing and imprisoning him in episode 5, protects him from assassination attempts, has a horrified expression on his face when Heinel orders the execution of Giligan and informs Kenichi where his missing father is before he commits Seppuku. He genuinely respects the Voltes Team and would even make a great ally for them had they not been on opposing sides.
  • Space Orcs: He is a cruel brute that resembles a demon, and is a Yes-Man to the demands of Prince Heinel and the Boazanian Empire. At first.
  • The Strategist: In most episodes, Jangal is this.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed, but out of Heinel's aides, Jangal is the only one who respects the Voltes team as fellow warriors and honours their request to find Kentaro. He is touched by Kenichi's empathy and before committing Seppuku, apologizes for deceiving him. In spite of his devil-like appearance, he has a heart, and is a good friend to Katherine, Heinel and anyone he meets.
  • Undying Loyalty: Jangal never turns his back on Heinel. Ever.

    Zuhl

Zuhl (ド・ズール)

Voiced by: Hiroshi Masuoka (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zuhl_from_voltes_v.png
Zuhl

An elderly underling of Heinel who is in charge of scientific development. He is direct designer for most of the Beast Knights in the first half of the series. He is secretly spying on Heinel as part of the emperor's plots, and greatly despises the prince for being what he views as a young upstart. Much of the center part of the series revolves around his schemes to keep Professor Goh secretly imprisoned so that he can take advantage of his knowledge and create a robot that can defeat both Voltes V AND Heinel, earning him respect in the empire. Heinel, for his part, views him as craven and somewhat useless - once dismissing him as "barely a noble". This is perhaps due to the fact that he only has a single horn. Eventually his schemes are revealed and he is executed by Heinel while pleading for his life.

  • Bald of Evil: Zuhl is the oldest of Heinel's aides, and lacks any sort of hair.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Zuhl is forever looking for chances to further his own position, even up to the moment of his death. During the last episode in which he appears, he's constantly trying to appeal to both Prince Heinel and the Voltes team at the same time, hoping that he'll be able to claim a victory over whoever it is that wins either way.
  • The Comically Serious: When Zuhl explains to Heinel, Katherine and Jangal that he has discovered that humans are capable of love, they burst out laughing while he's left trying to convince them he's telling the truth.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. Between Heinel's aides, both Jangal and Katherine genuinely like him, but Zuhl only cares for power. It's what drives him to betray him for Zambajil. This also isolates him from Katherine and Jangal, as he spends his time scheming about Heinel's demise and discussing the matter with other members of Zambajil's court, such as Marquis Zaki.
  • Evil Genius: Despite his constant failures, Zuhl is actually a pretty effective scientist. He routinely comes up with unique ideas for attacking the Voltes V and even manages to create a Beast Knight that can completely negate the magnetism needed to join its pieces together, just by examining a scan of its inner workings. He also was able to manage a network of secret bases scattered across many islands without raising Prince Heinel's suspicions, until Voltes V made it impossible to keep his plans concealed.
  • Dub Name Change: Oddly averted with most dubs. While every dub of Voltes V usually changes the names of the heroes and the villains, Zuhl is still Zuhl in Japanese, Philippine-English, American-English and Catalan.
    • The Italian dub changes the spelling of his name to Zuel.
    • The Brazilian Portuguese dub changes his name to Zul.
  • Gonk: In contrast to most Boazanians, Zuhl is bald, blue Gonk who resembles Count Orlok.
  • Hypocrite: Zuhl was absolutely incensed when he found out Heinel planned to kill him all along, despite the fact that he wanted to do the same to him. Blue-and-Orange Morality indeed.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Zuhl isn't exactly wrong when he says that Heinel is unfit to lead the Earth Invasion Force, but it's not like he himself is any better either. At least with Heinel, there are several times where he's just an inch away from annihilating the main characters. And in the Grand Finale, he would have if not for The Reveal.
  • Looks Like Orlok: Zuhl is blue Starscream Mad Scientist Orlok IN SPACE!
  • Mad Scientist: Zuhl specializes in both technology, biology and sociology. He is the first of the Boazanians to come to the conlusion that humans are capable of love, but when he tells this to Heinel, Jangal and Katherine, they laugh and think he's joking.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Zambajil orders Zaki to make Heinel's death look like an accident, so that he won't have any rivals to the throne. Zaki in turn orders Zuhl to sabotage Heinel in his upcoming duel with Voltes V. Katherine neutralizes the attempt, frustrating the three.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Subverted. While Heinel is no peach to any his aides (except Katherine, and even that's scarce at best, Zuhl was planning to assassinate him long before Heinel ordered for him to be tortured and whipped to the point he was Covered in Scars. However, this incident exacerbates his hatred for Heinel. Two episodes later, Zuhl tries to go through with the Assassination Attempt, only for it to backfire horribly.
Zuhl, after Heinel has Jangal whip his face: "Prince Heinel, I won't forget this humiliation! I will have my revenge on you and Voltes V..."
  • The Mole: While Katherine is in love with Heinel and Jangal views him as a honourable man, Zuhl despises him. This is partially due to his own agenda of wanting to take his place as Commander, since he thinks Heinel's age makes him unfit to lead the Earth Invasion Force, and partially due to Emperor Zambajil's orders. His underestimation of Heinel backfires, as he soon discovers that not only did Heinel already know of his true intentions, but with the help of Katherine, he set up a trap to catch Zuhl in the act. Expect the same thing to happen in any games of the Super Robot Wars series.
  • No Honour Among Thieves: Zuhl tries to switch sides and abandon his comrades whenever it benefits him. After betraying him multiple times, Heinel arranges for his execution and has him Un-Personed.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: One of the reasons Heinel doesn't realize he's trying to kill him is because he views him as incompetent. Zuhl leans into this for all it's worth. Unbeknownst to him however, Heinel saw right through him and foiled his schemes.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: Many such cases.
    • When Heinel and Jangal suspect him of taking the Beast Knight without the former's permission, Zuhl tries to complement his appearance, which only makes Heinel angrier because he knows Zuhl is making excuses to get out of hot water.
    • After he gets exposed for being Zambajil's Mole, he tries to desperately win back his favour to no avail. The first thing he does after being exposed for stabbing "Heinel", he begs at Heinel's feet for forgiveness, and when Heinel orders Jangal to let him go, he calls him compassionate, only to be kicked away and be told that if he wants to live, he must kill the Voltes team. Then, when Heinel calls him out for bringing the Voltes team to his base so he could kill them and take their machines, he begs for mercy again, before throwing his knife at Heinel for rejecting it. He is then unceremoniously shot and killed.
  • Robot Master: Zuhl specializes in both robotics and human behaviour. Not only can he construct powerful Beast Knights, he's also the first to discover, and experiment with, human emotion.
  • The Starscream: Zuhl is secretly envious of Heinel and seeks to take his place as the Commander of the Earthern Invasion Force.
  • The Rival: A minor case, as he seems to have a petty squabble with Jangal. He hates how Jangal is a Yes-Man to Heinel's whims and feels as if Heinel prefers him, thus making his role in the hierarchy of power lower.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: After Zuhl's assassination plot is foiled and he is caught in the act, he begs Heinel for another chance. Heinel orders him to kill the Voltes team if he wants to clear his name. In the next scene Zuhl arrives at Big Falcon with shackled legs and a large, round weight. Begging for their mercy (under the guise of killing them), he tells Big Falcon that Heinel wants him dead. Unbeknownst to Zuhl, the "weight" is actually a bomb designed to blow up him and Big Falcon, as Heinel never had any intention of forgiving him. Hiyoshi's Robot Buddy Tako disposes of it before it harms them, after which Ippei grabs Zuhl's staff, saying he will beat him for bringing a threat to their doorstep...only to hear a ticking sound from that too. It turns out that Heinel put another bomb in Zuhl's staff. When Zuhl realizes what Heinel did, he becomes enraged.
  • Treacherous Advisor: It goes both ways. He plots various painful deaths for Heinel, but becomes on the receiving end of the very same thing once this is found out.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: To kill him, Heinel hides one bomb in his shackle, and another one in his staff. Zuhl is oblivious to this until Tako and Ippei identify and get rid of them, and once he realizes Heinel set him up, he swears to destroy him.
  • Un-person: In episode 22, Heinel orders for the destruction of all photographs and records of Zuhl after the latter showed his true colours as The Starscream and tried to assassinate him.

    Marquis Zaki

Marquis Zaki (ザキ侯爵)

Voiced by: Tamio Ōki (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duke_zaki_voltes_v.png
Marquis Zaki

Emperor Zambajil's chief inspector. He enjoys telling the Emperor bad news, and as a result, many people are put to death based on his reports.

  • "Ass" in Ambassador: He is Zambajil's chief advisor and unpleasant to the nth degree to Heinel, mocking him for being the son of a traitor. When he repeats all the insults Zambajil called Heinel to his face, his face lights up with joy.
  • Asshole Victim: Throughout his military career, Zaki was responsible for the deaths of many Boazanians because he wrote reports that would enrage Zambajilnote  into executing them. He meets his end while observing Heinel pilot Galgo against Voltes V, hoping that he could tell Zambajil about his incompetence. Mid-battle, Voltes V tricks Galgo into biting the spaceship Zaki's in, which causes it to overflow it with the power it obtained from Voltes V. Both Zaki's ship and Galgo explode, though Heinel manages to escape in a pod. As he leaves, he orders Jangal to tell Zambajil that Zaki died a honourable death.
  • Attention Whore: Implied. Him causing the deaths of many and exaggerating the truth of their circumstances may have been a way to get Zambajil to notice him and give him importance amongst the other members of his court.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Zaki has dark rings under his eyes.
  • The Creon: Zaki wants Zambajil to stay in power and possibly fears that if he's unseated by Heinel, he may lose his position as well.
  • Dub-Induced Plotline Change: The Italian dub makes Zaki a Prince, just like Heinel.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, his name was changed to Zaki.
    • In the Italian dub, his name is changed to Principe Zahki.
  • The Dreaded: Heinel and Jangal speak of him this way, because he thinks nothing of sending reports to the Emperor that would result in innocent people being executed.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Zaki has a ghastly appearance and is a Perpetual Smiler, but not in the good way. He's usually smiling because he's caused the death of someone.
  • Evil Laugh: In contrast to his appearance, Zaki has a deep, menacing, smug Evil Laugh provided by Tamio Ohki.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: All of the members of the Boazanian military don't trust him, with Zambajil being the exception.
  • Karmic Death: Zaki conspires with Zuhl to send Heinel to his death by having the prince piloting a leopard Beast Knight named Galgo while they leak information about its weak points (specifically, the armour on it's sides) to Big Falcon. Zaki attaches the blueprints to Galgo to the corpse of a hornless Boazanian prisoner, and places him in a boat destined to Big Falcon Island on autopilot. Zaki and Zuhl's plan is to make it look like the prisoner died trying to bring the information on Galgo. However, Ri Katherine overhears the plot and reports it to Heinel, so he orders Zuhl to reinforce the armour. As Zuhl is being watched by Heinel's guards, he is forced to comply, thus sabotaging the attempt. But it turns out that the blueprints of Galgo do come to use in the battle after all - when Galgo nearly drains Voltes V of all it's energy, Hamaguchi orders the Voltes Team to allow it to continue so it can overload. Once Galgo absorbed too much energy, Voltes V used Zaki's ship as a shield as Galgo bit it, causing the spaceship to explode with Zaki inside it. Galgo fell to pieces as well, but Heinel managed to get away in an escape pod.
  • Kick the Dog: As if insulting Heinel, calling him a "traitor", implying he's stupid and laughing at his failures wasn't enough....Zaki throws a glass full of drink all over his face.
  • Looks Like Cesare: Dark rings under the eyes? Check. Messy black hair? Check. Eerie pale skin, creepy demeanor, and sent out with plans to kill? Check, check, check.
  • Refuge in Audacity: He mocks Heinel's bloodline, calls him stupid and worthless, and humiliates him by dumping a glass of red liquid all over his face. He knows that if Heinel retaliates, it will earn Zambajil's ire.
  • Sadist: Zaki laughs gleefully at the thought of sending a report to Zambajil that would get Heinel executed.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Zaki dons a red military outfit with golden frills.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Zaki says that Heinel will turn out just like his father, a traitor to the Boazanian Empire. It's later revealed that Zaki knows Heinel is loyal, but he said it to humiliate him.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Zaki says this about Heinel.
Heinel: "And how is the beloved Emperor?"
Zaki: "He's fine, except for something that's particularly irritating him."
Heinel: "I take it that is the reason why you are here."
Heinel: "Marquis Zaki! What are you saying?"
Zaki: "I'm not saying anything that didn't come from The Emperor himself"
    Heinel: "The Emperor?"
Zaki: "He said that you're weak, dumb and unworthy of your position. He also said that having you lead this mission was a very big mistake."
Heinel: "You're lying! The Emperor couldn't have said such things!"
Zaki: (bursts out laughing) "It must be humiliating for you to be told such things in front of your generals!"

    Belgan

Belgan Do (ド・ベルガン)

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bergan_from_voltes_v.png
Click here to see him unmasked.

A replacement science officer who shows up not long after Zuhl's death. He is responsible for the Armored Beast Knights who appear in the second half of the series, having invented a powerful new armor material that the Voltes is unable to damage at first. He wears his own set everywhere, and proudly demonstrates its efficacy against an attack by Heinel's guards during his first appearance. Like Zuhl, he is secretly working for the emperor and seeks to gain fame by taking Heinel's place. However, he quickly recants that position after his first loss to Voltes V and begs forgiveness, which Heinel accepts... only for him to betray him again at the very end of the series and try to seize power with General Gurul.

  • 24-Hour Armor: He is never seen wearing anything than his own personal armor all the time.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: He has an implied attraction to Katherine, who finds him repulsive. Not helping is hus misogynistic attitude and him putting her down in front of Heinel.
  • All There in the Manual: Some art books note that Belgan is a relative of Zuhl, the two sharing the same surname, Do.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Belgan is supposedly a Boazan noble, but he has no horns.note
  • Big Entrance: He makes one to both the humans and Prince Heinel's aides:
    • To the humans, Belgan prepares a meteor shower over the Earth, with an insulting message as a bonus to Big Falcon.
    • To Heinel's aides, he brags about his armour and proves
  • Cool Mask: Belgan's mask resembles a knight's helmet with a cool visor as well.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder. In his debut episode, he tries to kill Heinel, but when his assassination plot is exposed, Belgan begs Heinel to spare his life. Heinel agrees, on the condition that Belgan helps him defeat Voltes V. But in episode 36, the Ungrateful Bastard turns on Heinel once again and mocks him with Gurul for thinking that Zambajil ever cared about him in the first place.
  • Collapsible Helmet: He never directly takes his helmet off, merely collapsing the visor.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: Belgan has purple rings under his eyes.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, his name was changed to General Oslak.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Conte Zanzor.
  • Doomsday Device: Gurul and Belgan attempt to blow up the Earth with a magnemite bomb at one point. If it wasn't for Doyle's ship, they would have gotten away with it.
  • Electric Torture: Belgan is fond of this trope. He subjects the slaves, Nakamura's parents and Bernard to it, taking great joy in seeing them suffer.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Unlike Zuhl, who was at least friendly with Katherine and Jangal, Belgan is loathed by his fellow aides due to his antisocial behaviour and need to lord his achievements over everyone else. Even Heinel doesn't think he's anything special and only works with him out of necessity.
  • Job-Stealing Robot: Played with. Belgan wants to overtake Katherine and Jangal's positions as well as Zuhl's, to win Heinel's favour before replacing him. To do this, he purposes the Maxingal Alloy.
  • Karmic Death: Belgan spent most of his military career being a Professional Ass Kisser for Zambajil and his tyranny; in episode 39 Zambajil sends him and Gurul in a death mission against Voltes V and Big Falcon. Though they're armed by a Standard Sci-Fi Fleet, the robot ends up annihilating them.
  • Hypocrite: Belgan calls the humans "animals", but as Hiyoshi pointed out, the Boazanians have horns, which makes them closer to animals physically.
  • Irony: In episode 30, Belgan says that since Katherine is a woman, she's too weak for war. Guess who ends up outliving him?
  • Made of Indestructium: Belgan proclaims the Maxingal armour to be this. He gets a nasty shock when Voltes V does actually manage to break it. To add insult to injury, Heinel's aides, who he wants to annihilate alongside usurping Heinel's military position, find it hilarious and break out laughinh.
  • The Mole: For Zambajil. He was sent to unseat Heinel and take his position. Eventually, after Heinel is exiled, Belgan and Gurul try to use a bomb to destroy earth, but the Solar Eagle foils their plan.
  • Narcissist: He is proud of his Maxingal armour and believes that victory is in his hand before the battle is finished. When his armour proves to be weak against Voltes V, Katherine and Jangal laugh at him.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: When Zambajil cancels the expedition on Earth, he deems the planet useless. As a result Belgan and Gurul plan to blow the planet into pieces through the Magnemite Bomb. Belgan admits he was hoping to kill Heinel in the blast (hence the bomb being built under his base), but Katherine saved him and escaped from the scene.
  • Powered Armor: Belgan's Maxingal armour is said to be nigh-indestructible. As demonstrated when Jangal tries to attack him but his sword broke on contact with his armor and Voltes V had trouble trying to break through the Armored Beast Knight in first contact.
  • Replacement Goldfish: After Zuhl kicks the bucket, Belgan takes his place. And much like Zuhl, he suffers a grisly fate for betraying Heinel.
  • Sadist: Belgan takes pleasure in torturing humans and hornless Boazanians because he knows that they aren't in positions to fight back. When Megumi has him cornered, he makes an Oh, Crap! face because he knows that for the first time, someone stronger than him is standing up to him.
  • Shout-Out: Inverted, his V-shaped sigil on his Cool Helmet predates a Gundam it resembles (Voltes V was released in 1977, while Mobile Suit Gundam was released in 1979).
  • The Sociopath: He makes no effort to get along with his comrades, is belittling to anyone who doesn't match his skillset, tortures people for fun changes his loyalty based on who's more powerful. The biggest example of him being a sociopath is when Girion is being executed - while Jangal's jaw is open in shock and Katherine refuses to watch, Belgan stares without emotion.
  • Spanner in the Works: In episode 27, Belgan brings his pet eagle during his meeting with Heinel about taking down the Solar Bird. Though Heinel calls his idea dumb, hearing his pet bird caw manages to jog his memory, and Heinel instantly realizes that he saw the Solar Bird at the Emperor's Palace when he was a young child. Katherine contacts them, who confirm that the Solar Bird is a Boazanian creation and send them its blueprints.
  • The Stoic: Amongst Heinel's aides, Belgan is The Quiet One. Unlike Heinel, Katherine and Jangal, who occassionally show moments of happiness and joy, Belgan is stiff and only shows pleasure in torturing vulnerable people and rubbing Heinel's exilement in his face.
  • The Starscream: Like Zuhl, Belgan is disloyal to Heinel and wants to replace him as the commander of the Earth Invasion Force. He also looks down on Heinel's aiden, frequently belitting them for their efforts. He actually doesn't end up replacing Heinel - near the Grand Finale, he abandons the base and escapes to Boazania, but is wiped out by Big Falcon and Voltes V in an attempt to stop Voltes V from bypassing the planet's borders.
  • Straw Misogynist: Belgan thinks that Katherine has no place in war because she's a woman. Ironically, she ends up outliving him.
  • No-Sell: Just like he claimed, his armour withstands Jangal's sword and Heinel's forces. However, he's forced to eat his words when Voltes V defeats Okozenia with the help of the Solar Bird.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Like Heinel's aides at the start of the show, Belgan makes the mistake of assuming the humans are primitive creatures, the only difference being that he has much more powerful armour. Of course, he does get the upper hand in his fight with them, but ultimately faces defeat as their hands.
  • Viler New Villain: Belgan is much more crueller than Zuhl. He makes his debut by sending a meteor shower to the Voltes Team and calling them inferior to Boazanians. Zuhl at least acknowledged that the Boazanians had underestimated the capabilities of the human race.

    General Gurul

General Gurul (グルル将軍)

Voiced by: Ryusuke Shiomi (Japanese) Other Languages

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/general_gurul_voltes_v.png
General Gurul

A general back on Boazan who transmits Heinel's reports to Belgan. Very late in the series, he arrives on Earth himself to kidnap Dr. Gou and attempts to have Heinel killed. Despite his high-ranking position in the Boazanian military, he is somewhat cowardly and greatly terrified of taking part in actual combat himself. Both he and Belgan are eventually killed by Voltes V commanding a battleship in the final battle on Boazan.

  • Ambiguously Brown: Gurul's skin is a darker shade than most Boazanian nobles.
  • "Ass" in Ambassador: Like Zaki, Gurul enjoys belitting Heinel and rubbing his failure in his face.
  • The Creon: Unlike Heinel, who has many people gunning for his position, Gurul is satisfied being Zambajil's second-in-command. Near the Grand Finale, Zambajil offers to reward him half of Boazania if he defeats Voltes V and Big Falcon, though he doesn't seem interested.
  • Doomsday Device: The Magnemite bomb. Buried several feet in the ground, it's so ingrained that not even the titular robot can uproot it. Doyle, however, saves the day by using his ship to throw it out of the Earthern atmosphere.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, his name was changed to Baron Zander.
  • Karmic Death: Like Belgan, Gurul spent most of his military career being a Professional Ass Kisser for Zambajil and his tyranny; in episode 39 Zambajil sends him and Belgan in a death mission against Voltes V and Big Falcon despite Gurul's obvious panic. Though they're armed by a Standard Sci-Fi Fleet, the robot ends up annihilating them.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gurul is vehemently against shooting his own men, something that Belgan is eager to do. Belgan forcibly steers Zoltan into shooting them near the Grand Finale, which backfires as they've now impeded Boazan's remaining units (most of them were destroyed by Sodom and Gomorrah).
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Gurul or Gururu?note
  • Oh, Crap!: When Zambajil orders Gurul to take on Voltes V as it approaches Boazania, Gurul's facial expression shows that he knows he's done for.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: After Heinel fails to take over the earth, Gurul and Bergan decide to blow up the planet with a magnemite bomb, which is taken care of by La Résistance.
  • Punny Name: Gurul's name is likely taken from the Turkish word "Kurultai" (sometimes spelled "Gurultai"), a political and military council of ancient Mongol and Turkic chiefs and khans. Fitting for someone who is Zambajil's court messenger.
  • Replacement Goldfish: After General Zaki dies, Gurul is appointed as Zambajil's chief inspector. He follows the same fate as Zaki.
  • Satellite Character: Gurul only exists to establish Zambajil's ruthlessness and narcissism.
  • Token Minority: Gurul is one of the few dark-skinned Boazanians seen in the show.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Gurul is introduced in episode 36 and dies in episode 39.

    Boazanian soldiers

Boazanian Soldiers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heinels_mooks_from_voltes_v.png
Heinel's troops
Heinel's infantry consists of blue lizard-like creatures that pilot Flying Saucers and use Boazanian rifles. Unfortunately, shooting is far from their forte.
  • Ambiguously Related: To Zuhl. They're both blue, Horned Humanoid, Reptilian creatures, but it's unknown if Zuhl has a tail, or if they're even of the same race.
  • Blue Skinned Space Babe: They all have pale blue skin and resemble reptiles.
  • Cadre of Foreign Bodyguards: While they're Boazanian, they're not of the same race as Heinel, Katherine and Jangal.
  • Ditto Aliens: While it could be due to the fact that they're never unmasked and have the exact same height, they fall into this trope.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy : Take a shot every time they manage to shoot a hero. You will stay dry. They seem to have no problem when it comes to shooting innocent civilians, Earth soldiers, Zuhl, and Nakamura though.
  • Lizard Folk: They have massive, blue lizard tails.

    Skullrook

Skullrook

Heinel's mecha ship and base.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skullrook_from_voltes_v.png
Click here to see Heinel's palace

  • Beware the Skull Base: Skullrook based on the physiogonomy of a Boazanian skull (hence the horns) and is where Heinel, Zuhl, Katherine, Jangal and their minions reside.
  • Big Fancy Castle: The dome where Skullrook docks has multiple rooms and many secret passageways. It also has a dome where Heinel often sunbathes while drinking wine.
  • Cool Starship: Skullrook is of the creepy variant, being a gigantic metallic skull that can inflict large-scale damage.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, Skullrook was known as Skull Ship.
  • Eldritch Starship: Skullrook has a heavy resemblance to the icon of memento mori and has maufactured several war machines responsible for reducing the human population en masse.
  • Flying Saucer: Skullrook is often accompanied by many flying saucers. When Zambajil announces that he has cut off Heinel, many a Flying Saucer abandons the ship and returns to Boazania.
  • Killer Robot: On a large scale, since it deploys Beast Knights.
  • Mechanical Monster: Skullrook is a monstrous, ghastly looking skull that is equipped with various weapons and machinery used to torture and subjugate enemies.
  • Ominous Floating Castle: Whenever Skullrook appears on screen, expect the show's kill count to rise.
  • This Is a Drill: Skullrook can release a drill from it's mouth. It becomes more prominent in Super Robot Wars.
  • Unnecessarily Creepy Robot: Even character designer Yuki Hijiri lampshades this, asking "Seriously, I wonder why those guys who claim to be aristocrats board the ship even though it's so eerie." in the Voltes V Art Book.

    Lozaria

Lozaria (ロザリア)

Voiced by: Keiko Yokozawa (Japanese) Other Languages

Gohl's first wife, and the mother of Prince Heinel.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lozaria_voltes_v.png
Lozaria

  • Act of True Love: After Gohl confesses to being a hornless Boazanian, she tells him it doesn't make a difference to her and they embrace.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Lozaria is a stunning, gorgeous woman with a heart of gold.
  • Beehive Hairdo: Lozaria's hair is smaller and puffed into a small mass on the back of her head. It is held down by hair decorations.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She's a cute Boazanian ex-Princess who's very pretty as well.
  • Death by Childbirth: She died while giving birth to her son, and Gohl only heard of her passing afterwards due to being enslaved. It absolutely broke him and caused him to revolt against his masters, leading the first if many slave rebellions across the planet.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Her death during childbirth is a great source of tragedy for Heinel and her parents. He honours her memory by always keeping her dagger by his side.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, her name was changed to Rozalia.
    • In the Italian dub, her name was changed to Zertrud, the Italianized version of the name Gertrude.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: Lozaria's headpiece, necklace and earrings are very elaborate and Gem-Encrusted.
  • Falling into His Arms: Gender-inverted example; after she re-assures Gohl that she loves him despite her having horns and him being hornless, the two embrace in this fashion and they kiss.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Hers are a deep blue colour.
  • The Lost Lenore: Gohl screams in anguish upon being separated from her and cries when he finds out she died.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: After her death, Gohl asked his slavers if he could at least send flowers to her grave. The uppity bastards reacted by abusing him and mocking him further. Thus, Gohl was spurred to use his skill to attack them and encourage his fellow slaves to overturn the Boazanian Empire.
  • Princess Classic: Subverted. Lozaria would have been the Queen of Boazania had her husband ascended to the throne. As a person, she was very kind and loving, and supported her husband's desire for a society where all were equal regardless of how many horns they had.
  • Redhead In Green: Subverted. Lozaria has brownish-red hair, and in Gohl's flashback, she is seen wearing a green Pimped-Out Dress with yellow ribbons.
  • Regal Ringlets: Her hair twists into Ojou Ringlets at the bottom, alongside a braid.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Gohl, who was literally thrown into jail and tortured when it was found out he wasn't Horned like the rest of the nobles. Emperor Zambajil took pleasure in seeing Gohl scream for her as she was taken away from him, and she later died in childbirth.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Heinel has her horns.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Before they were forcibly separated, Gohl gifted her his prized dagger, which had two doves on the handle. Lozaria would later give it to Heinel, her son, to remember her.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Lozaria is sweet, kindhearted, doesn't have a single hateful bone in her body and supports the idea of people living peacefully together, hornless or not. For this, Zambajil has her sent away from her husband, and she dies in childbirth without him knowing. Had Heinel grown up with her, he wouldn't have been the person he is now, but all he has of her is a dagger.
  • Token Good Teammate: Lozaria is one of the few Boazanian nobles that isn't a bigoted, nationalistic Rich Bitch.

    Lozaria's parents

Lozaria's parents

Voiced by: Characters don't speak

The parents of Lozaria, who raised Heinel after her Death by Childbirth.
  • All There in the Manual: Tadao Nagahama: The world of Robot Romance Trilogy Anime Infobook reveals they lived in the countryside.
  • The Ghost: Always mentioned, never seen.
  • Good Parents: Heinel speaks highly of them to Katherine, saying that they were the only ones in his life that showed him love.
  • Pet the Dog: They raised their grandson Heinel after Lozaria died and Gohl fled to Earth, giving the boy love and care in a society that despised him for being the son of disgraced Gohl.
    Oral

Oral

Voiced by: Unknown (Japanese) Other Languages

Gohl's father, and the younger brother of the 123rd Emperor of Boazania. Zambajil is his nephew through his brother and a concubine. He is also the paternal grandfather of Kenichi, Daijirou, Hiyoshi and Prince Heinel.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/la_oral_from_voltes_v.png
Oral
  • All There in the Manual:
  • Abusive Dad: He wanted to murder Gohl when he was born for the crime of having no horns. When Gohl asked his mother if he was meant to be a slave and took off his horns, Oral punched him and threatened him into silence. Even after Heinel was exiled from the Palace, he made no attempt to reach out to him - the boy was instead raised by his maternal grandparents.
  • Big Fancy Castle: Lives in one.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Averted. Oral may be a Prince (though he has no claim to the throne), but he is a cruel bigot who wants the Fantastic Caste System to continue and assaults his son for speaking out against it.
  • Honour Related Abuse: He deems it appropriate to try and murder his own hornless newborn son because it would "humiliate" him.
  • I Have No Son!: Oral called Gohl cursed and attempted to kill him.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Kenichi and Daijirou have his hair colour.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He attempts to murder his newborn son for his hornless nature, and would have had he not been held back by his doctor and a fellow noble, while his frightened wife tries to protect their baby. Eventually, he agrees to raise the boy by giving him prosthetic horns, but forbids him to ever tell anyone of the truth.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/la_orals_wife_from_voltes_v.png
Oral's wife

  • Beehive Hairdo: A shorter example than most, but it's there.
  • Everything's Sparkly with Jewelry: Like most Boazanian nobles, she wears exquisite jewellery, in her case a necklace that has three chains of golden beads.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Especially prominent as she holds her newborn baby and begs her husband not to commit filicide.
  • Men Are Strong, Women Are Pretty: Her husband is a child abuser who inflicts violence on their son for expressing his beliefs that slavery on hornless Boazanians is wrong, and she is a mere bystander who can only beg him to show mercy.
  • No Name Given: Even though the September 1979 issue of the 月刊OUT magazine names her husband as Oral in the family tree of the Boazanian Royal Family, it refers to her as "Oral's wife".
  • Pink Is Feminine: She wears a pink dress that heavily resembles Aurora's, down to the sleeves and hem.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: What title she holds isn't clear, but she is a member of the Boazanian Royal Family through marriage, and dons a pink dress.
  • Take Me Instead: When Oral attempts to drive a dagger through their son, she defends him with her body and says that if Oral is to kill anyone, it should be her instead. Oral eventually drops the dagger and accepts that he can't change the fate of his son, and to protect him.

The Resistance

    In General
  • The Dog Bites Back: The hornless Boazanians had enough of being slaves of the horned nobility and rose up in revolt, culminating in storming the Imperial capital and knock down the pompous nobles from their high pedestals.
  • Dwindling Party: Once Zuhl found out that Gohl had gathered a party of refugees and planned on bringing them to Earth, he had them shot down and killed, one by one, save for Gohl because he wanted his genius to help him dispose of Prince Heinel. Zuhl managed to wipe out more than half of the Boazanian refugees, and even when the remaining members did make it to Earth safely, Heinel's forces still tried to systematically cleanse them, and managed to get General Dange.
  • Human Aliens: As most of them are hornless Boazanians, they are this trope. They even lampshade how they're no different from humans in episode 18.
  • La Résistance: They are this against the tyranny of Zambajil and horned nobility of the Boazanian Empire. Although they were outgunned and outnumbered by the Boazanian forces, they persevered against all odds and managed to successfully overthrow their oppressors with the help of Voltes V and Big Falcon coming to their aid.
  • The Migration: Gohl leads the hornless Boazanians to Earth, promising them that over there, no one will discriminate against them for being hornless. However in the Grand Finale, they all return to Boazania after the Fantastic Caste System is abolished.
  • Slave Liberation: Their goal.
  • War Refugees: They escape to Earth en masse to escape slavery. However, only a small amount of Boazanian refugees are able to make it to Earth, as Zuhl intercepts them on the way and shoots down several of their ships.

    General Dange

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dange_from_voltes_v.png
Dange
A former general who became inspired by Gohl and his desire for freedom, and broke off his own horns to join The Resistance. While trying to fly a ship to Big Falcon, he was shot at by Heinel's forces, and died from his injuries.
  • A Father to His Men: Dange was a devoted general to all that he took under his wing. This becomes an important plot point in episode 29, when one of the Monsters Of The Week, Girion, finds his corpse and realizes that Heinel's forces killed him. Horrified, he turns against Heinel, and is tortured and executed as punishment.
  • Cool Old Guy: Gohl sees him as one because of his allegiance to the Hornless Boazanians despite being born a Horned noble.
  • Defector from Decadence: Dange used to be horned, but he broke them as he was moved by the suffering of the Hornless Boazanians and inspired by Gohl's bravery and spirit. When Zambajil ordered Gohl's execution, Dange freed him from capture and escaped with him back to Earth, along with a handful of rebels.
  • Dub Name Change: The Philippine-English, American-English and Catalan dubs change his name to General Watson.
  • Friend to All Children: He is overjoyed when Nina gives birth to a baby boy and says that when he looks at him, he forgets all the hardships his people have gone through.
  • Mr. Exposition: The episode where he gets the most focus is him explaining Gohl's backstory to the Voltes Team, before succumbing to his injuries.

Solar Bird
A mysterious airship that appears one day and saves Voltes V from peril. Throughout the course of the series, it provides repairs, updates and additional support for Voltes V, but the identity of the pilot is never known. The Go brothers speculate it to be their father, Kentaro Go/Gohl, but is actually General Dange. After he dies, General Doyle takes over as the Solar Bird's lead pilot.

  • Combining Mecha: In episode 38, it's revealed that Kentaro designed the Solar Bird to combine with the Big Falcon base and form a Cool Spaceship. In this new form, they use warp technology to transport to Boazania and bring on the revolution.
  • Cool Plane: Despite it's small size, it survives the assault of the Beast Knights, which frustrates Heinel and his forces. It helps that like the Beast Knight, the Solar Bird is Boazanian technology.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, its name was changed from the Solar Bird to the Mechanical Eagle.
    • In the Italian dub, its name was changed from the Solar Bird to the Uccello Solare.
  • Red Is Heroic: Its colour scheme consists of red, white and yellow.
  • Surprise Vehicle: In combat, neither Voltes V or the Monster of the Week notice it until it's up close. Oddly enough, Heinel manages to notice it when it's in distance, and berates Jangal for being unable to.
  • Visual Pun: While it could be unintentional on the author's part due to the hero's bird motifs, it's a bird, it's a plane, and it's a hero that saves the day.
