Prince Heinel
Reference sheet

The primary antagonist that the Voltes Team faces, sent by his uncle, Emperor Zambajil, to conquer the Earth. (In actuality, Heinel was sent to Earth because his uncle hoped that the Voltes Team would kill him, unknowingly making them the actual antagonists.) Despite being a member of the royal family, Heinel was subjected to relentless abuse and humiliation ever since he was a child because his father betrayed The Empire. He wants to quickly conquer Earth and prove his loyalty to them.

Unbeknownst to Heinel, Zambajil, is secretly arranging his doom because he is the true heir to the throne. He actually sent Heinel to Earth in the hopes that he would be killed in battle. When Heinel prospered instead, the Emperor decided to send assassins after him instead, including his aide, Zuhl. However, his other aides, Katherine and Jangal, came to his aid and recognized Zambajil's true intentions.

Katherine tries many times to get Heinel to escape the war with her, but he refuses. To him, his honour is worth emptying his body of blood for.

With Zambajil's approval or not, Heinel strives to be a great Boazanian warrior and bring glory to The Empire. Even after he's exiled, his spirit isn't broken. Heinel does not fear death, and gladly states that he will fight till the very end.

    Heinel in General

  • 0% Approval Rating: Heinel was hated since birth due to his bloodline stemming from Prince Gohl - in other words, he was the son of the Fallen Prince who betrayed The Boazanian Empire and attempted to destabilize the aristocracy that abused and murdered their slaves. Even though these events happened before he was born and his father was arrested by then, he continued to suffer a huge loss of reputation because Boazanian society places a lot of importance on honour.
  • Abusive Offspring: Prince Gohl/Kentaro Gō is his father, but neither of them know this. Heinel believes that his father was arrested and executed, while Gohl believes that Lozaria's son is missing. A lot of tears are shed when this truth eventually comes out.
  • Ace Pilot: His skill in piloting mecha is near-unmatched. In Episode 8, he comes close to destroying Voltes V for good while piloting Galgo, and only lost because Zuhl told them of an exploitable flaw in Galgo's creation. When he's in Godol, he gives the titular robot a good beating, though it manages to get the higher ground in the end.
  • Alien Prince: He is the Prince of Boazania, though he aims to assimilate Earth into the Boazanian Empire, so technically he would also be the Prince of Earth as well.
  • All-Encompassing Mantle: His long, fluffy fur cape goes past his boots and cloaks the floor like a mat. Heinel discards it when he's ready to duel, showing that he means Serious Business.
  • All for Nothing: With The Reveal that his father is a Hornless Boazanian and his "betrayal" was simply trying to find a better way of life for his people, and that Kenichi, Daijiro, and Hiyoshi were his younger brothers all along, Heinel felt ashamed for ever partaking in the scourge against Earth and disavowed his actions.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • According to the Roman Robo Anime Climax Selection, Katherine's mother was Heinel's wet nurse/nanny. After Heinel's maternal grandparents died, the Rii family raised him alongside Katherine. The two became friends when as young children, Katherine saw Heinel being bullied and felt protective of him. Heinel's birthday is also revealed to be February 2.
    • Katherine and Heinel being Childhood Friends is reinforced in Super Robot Wars Alpha 3rd, where one Boazanian citizen remarks to another that he heard they were raised together. Heinel confirms this.
    • According to Keibunsha Encyclopedia of Monsters, 53rd edition, Heinel's height is 180cm and his weight is 52 kilograms. Other magazines have his height at 185 cm instead.
  • Always Save the Girl: Heinel refuses to let any harm touch Katherine, even if he's willing to send everyone else to their deaths. Even when Boazania is burning, she is the only one who he refuses to send into battle. Instead he asks her to leave him behind, as he runs to confront Voltes V on his horse.
  • Anti-Villain: Though initially depicted as a typical lead villain who is not above using under-handed tactics, Prince Heinel is later shown to have honorable qualities like being a fair leader to his subordinates as well as giving credit to those who deserve recognition. Earnestly giving his all for the glory of Boazania, Prince Heinel would rather die a warrior's death than live a cowardly life in defeat.
  • Appeal to Force: Heinel unsheathes his sword whenever he's angry, which often causes his aides to cower. He threatens Zaki with it when he wants him to stop talking about his failures, but Jangal restrains him and Katherine beg him not to give in to his anger, or it will lead to further consequences.
  • Arch-Enemy: Heinel views Kenichi as his archenemy since he is the leader of the Voltes team and commands the robot during battle. Throughout the series, his view of Kenichi changes to an Arch-Enemy, to a Worthy Opponent, and then to a younger brother, who he gives his life to protect.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Heinel was selected to lead the Earthern Invasion because he was a skilled warrior and bested the other candidates at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare. He graduated as their top cadet, and has been revered by many other Boazanians (including Jangal) ever since.
  • Badass Longcoat: Heinel wears a Prussian-blue mink mantle that covers his entire body and goes further than his feet. It has light blue mink fur on the sleeves and a snowflake-shaped collar. And when he takes it off, you know he means Serious Business.
  • Bad Boss: Subverted and downplayed. In the earlier episodes, Heinel was extremely harsh to his aides, punishing them for being ineffective against the titular Super Robot. He had Jangal arrested for a day as he was unable to defeat Voltes V, and in another episode he has Zuhl whipped to the point his body is Covered in Scars for the same reason. Notably, the only one safe from his wrath was Katherine, as he refused to kill her despite her being just as incompetent as Jangal and Zuhl, though he did cut her veil as a test of loyalty. In later episodes Heinel would become a Benevolent Boss, being more understanding to his aides' limits and working together with them instead of constantly ordering them around. When Jangal dies, Heinel calls him a brave warrior and says he will never forget his loyalty.
  • Backstab Backfire: Once Katherine informs him of Zuhl's betrayal, Heinel carefully arranges a Humiliation Conga for the scientist that ends with him showing his true colours to everybody - that he's a self-serving weakling with no true loyalty to anyone. And Katherine and Heinel are laughing at him through it all, considering it entertainment.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: In Episode 30, Heinel takes part in a pagan ritual that involves slitting the throat of a bird and pouring its blood in a cup. However, before he can finish it, he is interrupted by Katherine. There's also the fact that he approves of Katherine and Zuhl turning ordinary Earthern animals into Beast Knights.
  • Blood Knight: While Heinel has a tendency to use Appeal to Force, he's happy to engage in combat if his opponent has a sword too. In his duel with Kenichi, he's clearly having fun and laughing at him.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Heinel is a handsome man, regardless of his bloodthirstiness. . He was deliberately designed to be a Pretty Boy by Tadao Nagahama and Yuki Hijiri.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted. In episode 30, Heinel's face receives scars after his duel with Kenichi. He is later seen bandaged with Katherine, who's also injured.
  • Berserk Button: Unless you want to be cut down by his sword, do not remind him that his father is a traitor, or imply that he may follow his footsteps.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the Grand Finale, Heinel saves Kenichi from the grenade's explosion by shielding him with his body. While Kenichi is bewildered, Heinel looks at him with remorse, before the flames surround both of them. As Kenichi begs Heinel to live, he just stares at him sadly as his face becomes stained with tears. Even as all the other members of the Gō family beg him to live, Heinel refuses to leave.
  • The Blade Always Lands Pointy End In: Whenever Heinel challenges Kenichi to a swordfight, he tosses his spare sword at him and it always lands this way. Kenichi, being Kenichi, can't say no to a fight and obliges him.
  • Blade Brake: Since Heinel is almost always carrying his sword, he likes to disclipine them this way.
  • Blood Knight: In the first episode, Heinel ordered his troops to lay relentless carnage to Earth, though this slows down in future episodes. However, when it comes to 1v1 combat with Kenichi, he can't help himself.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Inverted. Heinel wears a huge blue coat that has a collar resembling a snowflake, and his list of crimes include, but are not limited to: invasion, mass murder, slavery, abuse of power, unethical experimentation, animal cruelty, mass genocide, holding hostages, kidnapping and torture.
  • Break the Haughty: Slowly. Heinel spends most of the series as a proud, honour obsessed Boazanian who wants to see the Earth crushed and the Voltes Team dead. However, he is forced to come to terms with the reality that his uncle, the Emperor, views him as a joke and will never be proud of him despite all he does. He's also forced to accept that the people of Boazania don't trust him. Then, he has to brave several assassination attempts, all of which are by people he trusted. As the Grand Finale nears, his most loyal general commits Seppuku, and in the finale itself Katherine dies protecting him. By the end of the series, he's a broken, grieving shell of himself, and is possibly why he accepts death.
  • Breakout Character: The most beloved character of the Voltes V series. Especially in the Super Robot Wars video games, where he remains one of the more prominent characters, being the Secret Character of Shin Super Robot Wars and the primary antagonist behind Super Robot Wars Alpha 's That One Level. Several anime magazines of The '80snote  also had tributes to him and featured him regularly.
  • Broken Ace: Subverted. While Heinel graduated at the top of his Military School, is the only one competent enough to lead the Earthern Invasion, is a Master Swordsman and an excellent pilot, he is also a laughing stock amongst Zambajil and his court of nobles. By the end of the series, all his comrades have been killed off one by one and the Empire he's fighting for is falling. And then he goes out via Redemption Equals Death.
  • Broken Pedestal: Heinel once viewed Zambajil as a noble and honourable man, in spite of what others told him. When he finds out that Zambajil is a selfish, cowardly, Manipulative Bastard, he drives a dagger into his chest. This trope is inverted with his father, who he spent years despising, only for his name to be the last thing he said before dying.
  • Broken Tears: When he learns that Zambajil sent him to die and had him exiled, Heinel tries to hide the tears streaming down his face, shattered that the man he gave his complete loyalty to would betray him like this.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Played with. Heinel is closed-off to anyone not in his circle, and speaks to his fellow Boazanians with a grandiose aura. Katherine shares the Upper-Class Twit attitude most Boazanians have, but she's a friendlier and more open person than him and even changes her mind about the war later on.
  • Cain and Abel: Heinel is the older half-brother of Kenichi, Daijiro, and Hiyoshi through Gohl. However, none of them learn this until the Grand Finale.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Despite being an Anti-Villain and not Beyond Redemption, Heinel is also still this at the same time. He gloats about his villainy to anyone who'll listen, justifying his actions towards the humans by saying they're no different from animals and bursting out in laughter when Zuhl tells him humans are capable of love.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Played With. In the earlier episodes, Heinel would become enraged at his comrades going against him and implying anything less than complete obedience to his orders. However, Heinel mellows out later, and when Katherine alerts him of Zuhl's betrayal, he listens to her advice, and thanks her when it saves his life. At the same time Heinel is extremely sensetive to the idea that the Emperor disapproves of him. It isn't until Zambajil orders his forces to abandon him that Heinel accepts this.
  • Captain Patriotic: A dark example, as his idea of "patriotism" is extreme nationalism where "lesser" races are forcibly enslaved and neighbouring planets are forcibly integrated into the Boazanian Empire. He also believes in Capital Punishment for those who turn their backs on the Empire.
  • Character Development: He started the series as a haughty noble, but over time, grew to respect his non-noble comrades and take their suggestions into account during battle. In turn, they began having hope in him and trust that he will conquer the Earth, and push themselves further to help him achieve his goal. Heinel also had a Hair-Trigger Temper in the earlier episodes, but over time grew to be more merciful and even forgave Belgan for his assassination attempt. Heinel also initially viewed Katherine's concern for him as a burden, but by the end of the series he realized how much she loved him. Despite looking down on humans, he also gains a newfound respect for Kenichi due to viewing him as a Worthy Opponent.
  • Char Clone: Inverted - Heinel predates Charnote . Tomino actually worked on Voltes V for a short while before leaving later on.
  • Childhood Friends: Heinel and Katherine were childhood best friends, and she protected him from the nobles that bullied him. As adults they're each other's Living Emotional Crutch.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: A variant. Heinel's age isn't specified in the anime (Supplementary material states he's 18), but it is mentioned that he graduated from a military academy, and he's old enough to be a commander. This puts him at odds with Zuhl, who thinks that Heinel is too young to lead the invasion. He plots for the death of Heinel in the hopes of replacing him, but is caught in the act and then put through a Humiliation Conga that ends with Heinel executing him.
  • Child of Forbidden Love: He is the son of a Horned Boazanian, Lozaria, and a Hornless Boazanian, Prince Gohl. Gohl deliberately hid the fact that he was Hornless because under Boazan law, only the Horned are allowed to be nobles, while the Hornless are meant to be enslaved. Gohl only revealed his prosthetic horns to Lozaria shortly before their marriage, and she told him she loved him anyway. Because Aristocrats Are Evil, Zambajil finds out by having the doctor that delivered him tortured and exposes him so he can usurp the throne. Lozaria is forcibly separated from Gohl (with the implication of Horned-Hornless relationships being forbidden on Boazan) before being exiled from the castle. Gohl is Made a Slave and oblivious to the fact that he has a firstborn son until he finds out that poor Lozaria died in childbirth. And in a twist of tragic irony, neither Heinel and Gohl realize they are father and son until Heinel is on the brink of killing his own kin.
  • Combat by Champion: In episode 30, after rescuing Katherine, Heinel tells Kenichi they should have a duel to determine the fate of the Earth. It ends with a draw, and both end up falling into the ocean, though Katherine retrieves Heinel's body and escapes from the scene.
  • Congruent Memory: In episode 27, Belgan brings his pet eagle during his meeting with Heinel about taking down the Solar Bird. Though Heinel calls his idea dumb, hearing his pet bird caw manages to jog his memory, and Heinel instantly realizes that he saw the Solar Bird at the Emperor's Palace when he was a young child. Katherine contacts them, who confirm that the Solar Bird is a Boazanian creation and send them its blueprints.
  • Conquering Alien Prince: Heinel looks down on Earthlings for resembling Hornless Boazanians and believes that the planet should become another of the Boazanian Empire's colonies.
  • Dead Guy on Display: After Heinel has Girion tortured, he has his remains delivered to Big Falcon to show them what happens to those who go against the Boazanian Empire.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: His mother died in childbirth. He never saw his father's face, but knows he's a traitor who was Unpersoned for turning against The Empire.
  • Demoted to Dragon: Quite literally. He is demoted by the Emperor for his failures in stopping Voltes V. Zambajil then tries to bait Voltes V to kill him, but Katherine saves his life and takes him to Boazania with her.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The death of Katherine, his lover, drove Heinel to incite the power of an ancient Boazanian deity and so he could wipe the "Hornless bugs" out himself.
  • Devious Daggers: After it seems that his sword fight with Kenichi is over, Heinel pulls out a dagger from his clothing. His intentions with it are obvious as he gives him a Death Glare.
  • Determinator: He refuses to give up the war, even when all his comrades are dead and The Empire of the past has crumbled completely. Even when Kenichi tells him he doesn't want to fight because it's pointless, Heinel refuses to take no for an answer and challenges him to one last swordfight.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A blonde white guy who wants to enslave other races (because he views his own as "superior") brings to mind certain imagery.
  • The Dragon: He views Emperor Zambajil as a great man, and serves as his main pawn while on Earth. He continues to believe in Zambajil's greatness even after he humiliates him to his Court.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After Zambajil deserts and the nobles surrender one by one in the Grand Finale, Heinel takes charge, becoming the sole (and very legitimate) threat to the Voltes Team and Boazanian rebels. Condemning the cowardice of his fellow nobles, he declares that he will fight for Boazania to the very end and goes One-Winged Angel through Godol.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Heinel is capable of piloting complicated machinery and wielding blades, while Zambajil fumbles holding a mere grenade. However, this doesn't stop Zambajil from trying to replace him with other Generals because of Heinel's heritage.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Heinel's ultimate goal is to restore his honour so that he can finally be accepted amongst the aristocrats as their Prince instead of his legacy being coloured with his father's betrayal.
  • Driven to Villainy: Your Mileage May Vary on this, but one of Heinel's biggest motivations is to restore honour to his family name after his father disgraced it by standing up to Boazania's unjust Fantastic Caste System. Heinel was denied a place in the palace, his birthright, over this, and treated with scorn from the same elite that he was supposed to be part of. To further complicate matters, his grandparents refused to tell him of his father's crime, all he knew was that he was flung into an unmarked grave before he was born. Had Lozaria lived and told him, it's likely Heinel would have a different outlook on life.
  • Dub-Induced Plotline Change:
    • The Philippine-English dub changes Heinel's motivation to keep fighting against Voltes V.
Original Japanese: "I will not run away, Katherine! I will defend this place by fighting Voltes V, that's what I want to do, and now I have no other choice but to fight them myself. Aside!"
Philippine-English: "Draco is dead because of them, do you not understand, Zandra? Those despicable earthlings were responsible for Draco's demise. Our fallen comrades cry for vengeance. Aside!"
    • It happens again in the same episode, regarding his Last Stand.
Original Japanese: "Katherine, I promise I will not die. Until I defeat Voltes..."
Philippine-English: "I will avenge you. Voltes V will pay for your demise!"
    • In the Italian dub, Heinel is Driven to Suicide after Katherine dies. Losing all will to live, he throws himself into Godol's flames, dedicating his last words to shouting her name. To his shock, it turns out that Godol is actually a mecha Hidden in Plain Sight. Jumping on the opportunity to avenge her, Heinel lays scourge all over Boazania.
Original Japanese: "To show my dedication, I shall throw myself into your flames!"
    Italian: "Kazarine!!!"
  • Dub Name Change:
    • The Philippine-English, American-English and Catalan dubs, change his name to Prince Zardoz.
    • In the Italian dub, his name was changed to Prince Sirius.
    • The Greek dub also changes his name to Prince Sirius (Πρίγκιπας Σίριους).
    • The Brazilian Portuguese dub changes his name to Príncipe Shardus.
  • Dumb Blonde: Inverted. He graduated as the top cadet at the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare, and Zaki even admits to Zuhl that he believes he is competent enough for the job, in spite of Zambajil's insults.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: His early episodes have him as a more typical antagonist, willing to use any strategy to win. Later on, he is portrayed as an honorable opponent for team Voltes, presumably to contrast with his uncle.
    • His obsession with honour is also a very specific type that's based around his nobility. He has absolutely no qualms about crushing the weak and brutally suppressing the hornless slaves for simply being born into a lower class, but is actively disgusted at other nobles showing weakness or trying to save their own skins. He is even willing to risk his life for an emperor he knows betrayed him later on, simply because he truly believes in the ideals of the empire. It's implied that some of his talk may also be justifications for his feelings as well, like when he saves Katherine from mortal danger and claims that it was just because she would disgrace Boazanian nobility if she were to die before an Earthling.
  • Everyone Loves Blondes: Nope! Heinel is either feared due to his status as a noble, or despised due to his bloodline. The only people that genuinely respect him are Katherine, Jangal, Girion (at first) and later, Kenichi, Daijirou, Hiyoshi and Gohl. Zaki even states that members of Zambajil's court think he's an incompetent moron.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • He loved his mother very much, but he never met her as she died in childbirth. Before her death, she promised Heinel a dagger, which he keeps on himself at all times. It becomes a Chekhov's Gun later on as he uses it to kill Zambajil. He also loves his grandparents for raising him with kindness and genuine love.
    • When Katherine dies protecting him, he realizes he loves her too.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Heinel is disgusted at Zambajil for pitting him against his own father and younger brothers. When Zambajil tries to push the blame on him for his actions, Heinel reacts by killing him, putting an end to his oppressive and tyrannical regime. In a way, he also avenged Zambajil disgracing his father long before he was born.
  • Evil Is Angular: Apart from his horns, Heinel's dark blue mantle has a snowflake-shaped collar with massive plates that extend past his head and down to his chest.
  • Evil Is Not Pacifist: He's a fierce military commander, for one, and he adheres to the Boazanian code of War Is Glorious. He's willing to torture his aides to harden their spirits towards war, unless they're Katherine. But it's not like he likes her or anything.
  • Evil Prince: He is ruthless, cunning, views non-Boazanians as subhuman, glorifies the atrocities committed by the Boazanian Empire in the name of honour, and has no qualms about using gratuitous violence to get what he wants. He seeks to colonize Earth as an attempt to bring honour to his name.
  • Evil Redhead: Accidental example. Heinel is referred as a blonde by his character designers, but at certain points of the anime, it appears to be ginger or a ginger-blonde colour.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Courtesy of Osamu Ichikawa, Heinel has a cold, immersing voice.
  • Execution: Heinel orders the execution of Zuhl and Gilligan, the former for his Assassination Attempt and the latter for being a "traitor" and praising Dange and Kenichi while criticizing him.
  • Fallen Prince: Heinel is eventually exiled by Zambajil for repeated losses at Voltes V's hands. He blames this on himself, not yet realizing that his uncle just wanted an excuse to wash his hands of him.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Heinel has a feminine face with elegant and sharp features. He also has golden, tousled hair and dresses as a noble aristocrat. According to The Other Wiki, Takarazuka Revue was one of his inspirations. He starts the series by invading the Earth, committing wanton destruction in the way, and throughout the series, his list of crimes expand to slavery, blackmail, taking hostages, animal slaughter, capital punishment on his own men, forced imprisonment, attacking unarmed civilians, compelling prisoners of war to serve his forces, torture and spreading diseases amongst many others.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Heinel wears a sash style belt that has a ruffle hanging from the right side.
  • Finger-Tenting: Heinel tends to relax his fingers over the hilt of his sword when he's curious/intrigued.
  • Forced to Watch: After Heinel has Girion executed, he sends his remains to the Voltes Team to let them know what he does to "traitors". They react by giving Girion and Dange a proper burial, with military salutes.
  • Friendless Background: Due to his father betraying the empire and defecting to Earth, he was known as "The Traitor's child" and ostracized by Boazanian society. When they were children, Katherine saw him being bullied one day, and became protective of him, becoming his first genuine friend.
  • Freudian Excuse Denial: He doesn't expect anyone he's hurt to forgive him and willingly accepts death afterwards.
  • Giant Poofy Sleeves: His suit has reddish-pink ones underneath his Badass Longcoat. Justified, since he's based on real-life French aristocrats.
  • A Glass in the Hand: At the beginning of Episode 10, he ruminates on the need to discover the secret of Super Electromagnetic energy to counter Voltes V. He crushes it just as the episode card appears.
    • This happens again in Episode 15 after their Beast Fighter is defeated yet again. His hand is seen bleeding after he crushes it, and Katherine tries to staunch it before he tells her off.
  • Glass of Chianti: Heinel is often seen drinking a certain red-pink liquid in a wine glass. It's more or less the Boazanian equivalent of wine.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Gender-inverted and subverted. While Heinel is a Boazanian supremacist who thinks nothing of taking innocent lives in the conquest to colonize Earth, he is generally more respectful and forgiving to his comrades, giving praise to them for their skills, and personally went to save Katherine after she confronted Kenichi. When he realizes he has been fighting against his own family he has a My God, What Have I Done? moment. In contrast, Zambajil has a huge case of Lack of Empathy and doesn't care about anyone other than himself.
  • Green and Mean: Subverted. Heinel's iconic mink coat is blue, but some pieces of supplementary material depict it as green. Like herenote .
  • Guyliner: It's never stated if Heinel uses eyeliner (though it is plausible since wearing eyeliner was something 17th-century French aristocrats did) or just naturally has very thick lashes, but he has these along his Tsurime Eyes.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Heinel gets angry easily, and discussing the Emperor's view on him is a sore spot in particular, as Jangal, Katherine and Zaki learn. However, this was a case of Early-Installment Weirdness and in future episodes Heinel would have a calmer disposition towards the matter. However, he was also offended at the mere suggestion that Kenichi could be Boazanian, and scolded Jangal for indulging that thought.
  • Hates Their Parent: He despises his father for betraying the Boazanian Empire and defecting, and leaving him as The Scapegoat for the Boazanian nobles to take out their anger on.
  • Haughty "Hmph": He does this to his aides to show his displeasure at their perceived failures. When Kenichi insists that humans and Boazanians can co-exist in peace, he frequently "hmph"s to show what he thinks of the notion.
  • The Heavy: Heinel drives most of the show's conflict due to his nature and his desire to see Voltes V defeated and the Voltes Team dead. He is further motivated by Zambajil and his court mocking him for being "a failure", as well as his obsession with honour.
  • Hidden Depths: Heinel genuinely cares for the citizens of Boazania and when he learns they don't trust him, he reacts as if he's been slapped in the face.
Heinel: "My own people don't trust me...?"
  • High Collar of Doom: Heinel's mantle is adorned with mink at every hem except the collar, which fans out around his neck and resemble the points of a snowflake.
  • Heartbroken Badass: In the Grand Finale, he watches Katherine die and crosses the Despair Event Horizon. He then throws himself into Godol before subjecting Voltes V to a brutal beatdown and coming close to murdering Kenichi.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: Heinel's desire for honour is ultimately what leads to his downfall. Even though Zambajil makes it clear that he despises his nephew, Heinel is so hell-bent on cleansing his family name of his father's sin that he refuses to defect from him. On multiple occassions, he makes it clear that he's willing to die for it. In the Grand Finale, Katherine begs Heinel to realize that the war is futile and he has no chance of winning, but Heinel tells her that he does not fear death. Uncaring that his side is losing, Heinel charges into the battlefield, intent on slaughtering Kenichi, and likely would have if it wasn't for Gohl's intervention. And from there it gets worse.
  • Honor Before Reason: Continues to fight the Voltes Team in the last episode, even though it is obvious his side is about to lose. The only reason for doing so is that he is a noble. The terrifying thing is that even though he's a One-Man Army at that point, he nearly does murder the Voltes Team's leader pilot.
  • Hope Crusher: Many examples.
    • In episode 14, he promises Mr. Sakame, an enslaved human, the freedom of his captive daughter under the condition that he infiltrates Big Falcon and sabotages Voltes V. Though Sakame holds up his end of the bargain, Heinel doesn't, before setting off a bomb that kills him. Oh, and said daughter was Dead All Along.
    • In episode 22, after Zuhl betrays him, Heinel offers him his position as his aide back, much to Zuhl's joy...and then calls him an idiot for thinking he can't see through his scheme, and ordering for Zuhl's execution.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is even more hot-blooded than his younger half-brother, Kenichi, is, and man, does it show, especially in the Grand Finale.
  • Humiliation Conga: Due to his repeated defeats at the hands of Voltes V, Heinel is seen as a joke in the Emperor's Court, and Zaki gleefully tells him he looks forward to his downfall. Despite inflicting heavy casualties to Big Falcon and Earth, Heinel continues to lose battles against Voltes V which results in Zambajil eventually demoting him and replacing him with Gurul and Belgan (not that they're any more successful). Forcibly exiled from his home planet, Heinel returns there anyway and continues to fight in the war, only to lose Katherine, and then lose to Voltes V again while piloting Godol.
  • I Am Not My Father: Zambajil and the upper echelons of Boazanian society view him as an extension of his father, who betrayed and disgraced them. Heinel despises being associated with him, and is ready to cut down Zaki for mocking his "traitor's blood".
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Heinel views himself as above the humans and hornless Boazanians, but he also feels a need to prove himself to Zambajil and the Boazanian Empire. This is reinforced by Zambajil constantly mocking him and making him feel inferior, going as far as to personally humiliate Heinel by sabotaging his plans in-battle.
  • It's Personal: His anger at his father isn't just because he betrayed Boazania, but also because Heinel has been bearing the brunt of humiliations from his fellow nobles over being his son.
  • Kill on Sight: He wants to systematically eliminate the members of the Voltes Team through this method. He personally tries to finish off Kenichi this way.
  • The Kingslayer: It is Heinel who delivers the final blow to Voltes V's Big Bad, Emperor Zambajil, after realizing that he is a self-serving bastard who has no code of honour and would abandon Boazania if it benefits him. In a twist of Irony, had Zambajil's intense paranoia not driven him to antagonize Heinel, this would have never happened.
  • Kinslaying Is a Special Kind of Evil: Heinel believes in this, which is why he's sickened when he finds out that Kenichi, Daijirou and Hiyoshi are his younger half-brothers, and that Kentaro is his father, Gohl - meaning that he's been fighting against his own flesh and blood this whole time. He tries to appeal to his uncle Zambajil to stop the war, but he refuses and insists they kill Heinel. Zambajil bites the dust for that one.
  • Large and in Charge: Inverted. Between Jangal, Zuhl, Heinel and Katherine, Jangal is the tallest, Heinel and Katherine appear to be the same height, and Zuhl is the shortest. Belgan towers over Heinel and Katherine, but he's shorter than Jangal.
  • Leave No Survivors: While he's willing to keep the human race alive so that he can enslave them, he offers no such mercy to the Voltes Team. He frequently utters variations of this trope to his Mooks, stating that they must do everything in their power to annihilate them.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: Heinel offers this to Kenichi twice, before throwing him his spare sword. The first time, Kenichi assumes the Alien Prince is bluffing, but is surprised to see he isn't. The second time, he takes it seriously and duels Heinel with more skill.
  • Light Is Not Good: Heinel has blonde hair and is an Evil Prince that wants to enslave the inhabitants of the Earth. He makes his entrance to the planet by having his forces destroy several countries and national monuments. Even before that, back on Boazan, he happily supported the oppression of the Hornless Boazanians - the boot wasn't on his neck, after all.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: Heinel inherited his royal title from his father. Unfortunately, this came with the price of also inheriting his reputation. On the other hand, he inherited his Horns (a mark of nobility in Boazania) from Lozaria.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Katherine is this for Heinel. They grew up together, and he finds himself making exceptions for her every time she goes against his rules. He doesn't know it, but Katherine is in love with him. While he shed tears at Jangal's death, hers was what set him off to crush the remains of Boazania under his feet. The way he died has parallels to her death, too.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: All thanks to Sins of Our Fathers, Heinel was driven from the palace and ostracized by his fellow nobles. He was recognized as one and entitled to the same privileges as most Horned Boazanians were, but they absolutely hated him and made it clear every chance they got.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Heinel has long, tousled hair that goes past his shoulders. Yuki Hijiri stated that he was designed with this trope in mind, as a reference to real-life French nobles, who had long hair and elaborate clothing. Tadao Nagahama: The world of Robot Romance Trilogy Anime Infobook also refers to Heinel and Richter "beautiful boys".
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: The Gō brothers are his younger half-brothers, and this news was revealed by their father in the Grand Finale. By the time he discovers this, it is far too late.
  • Malicious Slander: Heinel attempts to manipulate the Voltes team by slandering its creator, Kentaro, as a traitor that despises Earth, a slave driver and an abuser in different occasions. He successfully manages to break their spirit many times, but they always come back stronger.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Since he's a Boazanian Prince, this is a given. He has the luxurious objects, fancy clothes and the Big Fancy Castle.
  • Master Swordsman: Heinel is a skilled swordfighter and a formidable enemy to Kenichi in their duels. He also manages to use his blade as a shield against a bullet by barely unsheathing it.
  • Meaningful Name: According to Tadao Nagahama, Heinel's name is derived from the form of address "Your highness", which is befitting to his status as a prince and the true heir to the throne.
    • In the Italian and Greek dubs, his name is Sirius, after the star. Appropriate for someone from outer space.
  • Million Mook March: Heinel is often accompanied by an army of tall, blue-skinned Lizard Folk mooks. He's a Benevolent Boss to them, and often tells them that they will be rewarded greatly for sacrificing themselves in the war against Voltes V.
  • Military Academy: Knowing that he had very little chance among the ruling class, Heinel decided to earn others' respect through military. He attended the Boazanian Institute of Military Sciences and Warfare, where he graduated as their top cadet. This is also reflected in his commanding style to his aides, where his rigid standards and demands for utmost obedience are reminiscent to that of a strict military leader.
  • Morality Pet: Katherine. While he is usually harsh to all his Generals, he is warmed by her Undying Loyalty to him, and goes out of his way to rescue her when she's in distress. This doesn't stop him from being angry at her when she suggests Zambajil wants to kill him, however. In the Grand Finale, he yells at Katherine to save herself before charging headfirst into war.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Once he realizes that Kentaro Go is his father, Prince Gohl, and he was the one who gave Lozaria his prized dagger, he has a Villainous BSoD and falls to his knees. He then begs his uncle to stop the war.
  • New Child Left Behind: To be fair, it wasn't the fault of his parents. Gohl didn't know Lozaria was pregnant until after he was forcibly enslaved. To make things worse, the poor woman died in childbirth, leaving little Heinel orphaned. Had Zambajil not interfered, Gohl would have raised Heinel to be a more virtuous person.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Quite a few times.
    • If Voltes V didn't know of Galgo's flaw, he would have annihilated the robot right there.
    • In episode 34, Heinel recruits Gilligan, and tells him of his plan to capture the Volt Frigate in exchange for Dange. This almost works, but it turns out that Gilligan has a Hidden Heart of Gold, and renounces his loyalty to Heinel.
    • In the Grand Finale, had he not discovered that Kentaro/Gohl was his father, he would have driven his dagger into Kenichi. Even though he had tried to murder him moments earlier, Kenichi still welcomed him as a brother.
  • Noble Demon: Eventually.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Heinel is the noble male to Jangal's roguish male. In a subversion of stereotypes, the noble one is a monster.
  • No Historical Figures Were Harmed: Savvy viewers may have picked up on Prince Heinel's similarities to Napoléon Bonaparte. Both are descended from noble bloodnote , both led wars with the purpose of colonizing land, both have fathers they considered "traitors"note , both were noted to be excellent in schoolnote , both were bullied heavily growing up by their fellow aristocratsnote  and even their swords are similar It's also another nod to how the Boazanian Empire is a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to France.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Heinel says this to Katherine in the Grand Finale.
Heinel: Leave me. Leave me to my fate. I do not fear death.
  • No Place for Me There: Heinel doesn't move from the fires after realizing the magnitude of his actions, shaking his head when Kenichi begs him to stay.
  • Oblivious to Love: Heinel doesn't understand that Katherine loves him, and assumes that all her actions are for the sake of The Empire. This makes him have Chaste Hero and Stock Shōnen Hero characteristics as a result. His younger half-brother, The Leader Kenichi, on the other hand, has Celibate Hero and Stock Shōnen Rival characteristics.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Heinel often surveills Big Falcon and their pilots in case chaos ensues and he can capitalize off of it. He also enjoys dangling the possibility of the Go brother's father being alive in their faces, (of course, this does work against him at times, however, such as in Episode 15), and even takes advantage of unexpected situations like Katherine luring Kenichi away from the Earthling base.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: While she was pregnant with him, his mother promised him a dagger, but she never got to tell him of its origin as she died in childbirth. Heinel treasures the dagger because it's the only thing he has to remember her by. In the Grand Finale, Gohl recognizes the dagger as the same one he gave his first wife before he was jailed and enslaved, and both instantly realize that Gohl is Heinel's father. Heinel falls to his knees upon the realization that he has been fighting against his own family all along.
  • One-Man Army: In the Grand Finale, he attempts this by running to the Boazan castle and declaring his desire to decimate and deserters.
  • Pastel-Chalked Freeze Frame: Heinel is depicted this way when Katherine takes the shot meant for him. He begs her to live, but can only comfort her as she dies, though she feels very happy that she's able to spend her last moments with him.
  • Pelts of the Barbarian: He dons a fluffy blue mink coat. However, his feminine features and young age make it hard to believe he's a "barbarian".
  • Pitiful Worms: Heinel has a tendency to do this a lot. He compares humans to "worms", "hornless bugs" and "insects". In the final episode, he calls Zambajil a "maggot" before flinging a dagger at him.
  • Pretty Boy: He has a smooth face, thick eyelashes and long, flowing hair. Even the Voltes V Roman Album Art book comments on it, stating "Prince Heinel. Has there ever been a villain with such drama? Heinel can also be called a hero. He's a handsome young man with splendid beauty. He wears gorgeous clothes and has a beautiful voice, just like the French aristocrats of the Middle Ages."
  • Pretty in Mink: Heinel wears a thick, dark blue fur mantle that reaches past his feet.
  • Princeling Rivalry: Zambajil wants him dead because he is the true heir to the throne. He knocked his father out of the game by exposing him for his lack of horns, and intended to get rid of Heinel by sending him to invade Earth. To his frustration, his nephew is actually quite competent at warfare and just won't die.
  • The Proud Elite: Heinel is open about his pride as a Boazanian noble. Ironically the nobles see him as a source of shame due to his father being a traitor, despite Heinel being fervently patriotic of Boazania and an extremely skilled warrior. Due to his multiple losses against Voltes V, this shame deepens.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Along with Jangal, probably the most honor-obsessed Boazanian in the series. He despises showing weakness or letting his troops do so and feels great vindication when he executes soldiers that retreat from the battlefield too early.
  • Punny Name: Heinel's name is a pun on "Your highness".
  • Raised by Grandparents: As his mother died in childbirth and his father was arrested for his slave rebellion activities, Heinel was raised by his maternal grandparents. They were the only people in his childhood that showed him genuine love.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Realizing he had been waging a senseless war that had him pitted against his own father and half-siblings, Prince Heinel is emotionally shattered for a short while but eventually accepts the truth. When he sees the defeated and now very desperate Zambajil's pathetic attempt to escape, Prince Heinel throws a dagger at the despotic Emperor thus finally putting an end to his uncle's tyrannical regime. As their surroundings are being engulfed in flames due to all the fighting, Kenichi is almost caught in the fire but Prince Heinel immediately comes to the former's aid then pushes him aside. His younger half-brother now safely out of harm's way, the still remorseful Prince Heinel willingly lets himself be trapped amidst a pile of burning rubble; Kentaro Goh/Gohl and the rest of his sons can only look on tearfully as their newfound kin solemnly succumbs to a fiery demise. Prince Heinel enjoyed a brief moment of redemption and solace before death knowing that his last selfless act saved Kenichi's life.
  • Red Is Violent: Heinel's suit is red under his blue mink coat, and he is suicidally violent. He resorts to violence at the slightest provocation, and once threw his sword to the other side of the room because she made a sound that disturbed him while he was practicing a religious ritual, only for it to be a concerned Katherine.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Heinel is the extremely Hot-Blooded Red Oni to his younger half-brother, Kenichi's more calmer Blue Oni.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: The official DVD case for Voltes V depicts Heinel with his coat off, showing that he wears pink sleeves in his suit.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Once Katherine dies, Heinel unleashes Godol's wrath upon Boazania and Voltes V. Godol adds to the already-massive pile of rubble on the planet, and Heinel refuses to stop even after Kenichi tells him the war is over.
  • Robot Me: Heinel fools Zuhl by using a robot replica of himself to lure him and reveal his true murderous intentions. For added creepiness, the robot-Heinel's eyes thin and turn big after Zuhl stabs him. When he hears Heinel's Signature Laugh echo around the room, he knows he's done for.
  • Royal Blood: He is Gohl's son, and the true heir to the throne. This makes Zambajil insecure, and is why he sent him to invade Earth, hoping that Heinel would be killed off in the way.
  • Royal Brat: He doesn't hesitate to remind people (or more accurately, his naysayers) that Zambajil is his uncle and that he is the Prince of Boazania, brandishing his sword to his aides when they suggest that Zambajil doesn't have his best interests at heart. Zaki knows full-well it's a sore spot for him, and enjoys pushing his buttons by reminding him that Zambajil hates him.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Unlike his uncle, who was handed everything to him because he has born the Emperor's son, Heinel worked to get where he is and actively takes command in missions. He is a skilled military commander and the first episode of the anime mentions that his forces managed to uproot several countries in the midst of Alien Invasion.
  • Self-Harm: When Heinel is enraged, he tends to compress his hands around whatever object he's holding until it breaks. Many times this happens to be a wine glass, at one point the shards spill all over his hand and make it bleed. When Katherine shows concern for him, Heinel tells her to leave it.
  • Self-Made Man: This is ultimately what sets Heinel apart from Zambajil. While Zambajil was given everything to him by virtue of birthright, Heinel chose to work hard to get where he is today. Heinel is more involved in his expeditions and genuinely cares about his comrades, unlike Zambajil, who's neglectful of his duties and more obsessed with power.
  • Sensual Spandex: Heinel's leggings under his mantle are skin-tight. He wears a white, ruffled sash-belt over it.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both Zambajil and Heinel love drinking the unnamed red/pink drink. He also inherited Kentaro/Gohl's drive for hard work, strategic genius and leadership qualities.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Heinel dresses like a wealthy aristocrat, but is capable of fighting like a warrior when he has to. He studied sparring at the aforementioned Institute, and silenced his naysayers with his skill.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He is apathetic to everything in the world except for two things, 1) his mission for Boazania and 2) Katherine Rii. Before Katherine dies, she gives him a Dying Declaration of Love that he reciprocates.
    • The Italian dub heavily exaggerated this by adding a Dub-Induced Plotline Change where Heinel's motive for entering Godol is for Katherine, with his last words even being "Katherine, my last thoughts are of you!".note
  • Sins of Our Fathers: His father is Gohl, who defected from the Boazanian Empire to lead a slave rebellion against the horned Boazanians, and later fled to Earth. In Episode 8, Heinel recounts to Katherine that when he was a child, fellow children would pelt him with sticks and stones and physically abuse him any time he was in public. The nobles of Boazania also scapegoated him for his father's actions, claiming that he would grow up to be a traitor just like him.
  • Snobby Hobbies: Unsurprisingly, as a noble, he dresses like an aristocrat and likes sipping wine.
  • The Sociopath: The extremely rare Anti-Villain variation of one. Heinel doesn't bat an eye at murdering humans and enslaving them as long as it's for Boazanian honour. He is willing to kill billions in his crusade for world domination, and once the humans he associates with outlive their usefulness to him, he has them killed as well. He views humans as primitive beings, and enjoys manipulating them for his own goals. Heinel is notably more merciful to those under him that are of Boazanian blood, but he still has Jangal imprisoned for failing to defeat Voltes V and tells Katherine he only saved her because of her noble blood.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: The Voltes V 1978 Roman Album Art book reveals that Heinel has felt this way since childhood.
Voltes V 1978 Roman Album Art book, recounting Heinel's childhood: "The child who grew up to be Prince Heinel was only shown love from his grandparents, and hatred from everyone else. He was only safe in their home. If he took a step outside, people would call him a traitor's son, and they would look at him with contempt and ridicule. Even younger children would throw stones at Heinel and beat him with sticks. Heinel, being used to all the abuse and humilation, grew up to be a someone who never shed tears no matter what happened. But in his heart, he was always crying. “Just because my father is a traitor, why do I have to be called a traitor!! I'll change history and I'll prove them wrong!!!”, he thought.
  • Stellar Name:
    • Dub-specific example. In the Italian dub, his name is changed from "Heinel" to "Sirius", after the brightest star in the night sky.
    • His name is also Sirius in the Greek dub. It means "glowing" or "scorching" in Greek.
  • The Stoic: He only cares about war and there are very few moments where he expresses anything outside of his drive to conquer the Earth and kill Voltes V. On the other hand, he loses his temper at his honour being insulted and uses violence to answer it. While he certainly has his Large Ham moments, Heinel is more Sour Outside, Sad Inside, if anything.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Heinel has Lozaria's horns. He also has his uncle's hair colour, though his has a more reddish tint. His biological father, Gohl, is also a blonde.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: After Zuhl's assassination plot is foiled and he is caught in the act, he begs Heinel for another chance. Heinel says that he will forgive him under the condition that he kill all the pilots of Voltes V. In the next scene Zuhl arrives at Big Falcon with shackled legs and a large, round weight. Though the guards originally assume he is an old man, the Voltes team recognize him as Zuhl. Zuhl begs for their mercy and tells them Heinel wants him dead. Unbeknownst to Zuhl, the "weight" is actually a bomb designed to blow up him and Big Falcon. After Tako recognizes the bomb and disposes of it, it turns out that Heinel also put another bomb in Zuhl's staff, which is similarly disposed of. Once Zuhl realizes what Heinel did, he becomes enraged and swears to kill Heinel, only for Heinel to order his execution and Un-person him.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Zambajil announces that Heinel is exiled from Boazania due to his failures from Voltes V, and recalls every one of his remaining Mooks, Heinel has this reaction.
    Heinel: "I..don't believe it...I don't believe it..."
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: After the death of Jangal, his mooks deserting and Voltes V being led to his secret base, Heinel decides to take matters in his own hands. He enters a ship, swearing to eliminate them, but Katherine shoots him with a stun gun and escapes with him to Boazania. This is followed by Voltes V and Dange's ship entering Boazania and staging a successful slave rebellion. When Heinel awakens and Katherine informs him of what happened, he grows enraged once again and charges into battle, ready to turn the tides of war.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Heinel practices Boazanian pagan rituals. In the Grand Finale, puts his trust in a statue of a Boazanian hero, Godol.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Heinel is often seen drinking a red/pink drink in a wine glass. It is unknown if Boazanians consume alcohol, or of Boazania is even capable of producing it.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The only thing he has of his mother is a dagger, which was given to her by her husband, Prince Gohl.
  • Tragic Villain: Everything he does is from a place of wanting to atone for something that isn't even his fault - i.e., having a father that betrayed the Boazanian Empire - and in spite of his loyalty, he's still abused and called a "traitor". As the Prince of Boazania, he genuinely loves and cares for his nation, but is his reputation is marred by the sin of a man he never knew or met. Years of maltreatment have made Heinel a cold and full of self-loathing, believing he's only as good as his honour.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Heinel can forgive disobeying his orders, failing to defeat Voltes V, embarassing him and insulting him. However, when Zuhl betrays him, Heinel has him Un-personed.
  • Tsurime Eyes: In true Tsundere fashion, Heinel's eyes slant upwards at the corners. It also adds another factor to his Pretty Boy status.
  • Tsundere: Despite his cold demeanor, there are many hints of his soft spot for Katherine, such as him refusing to be harsh to her the same way he is to Zuhl and Jangal, and the fact that he saved her from Kenichi. In the few times Heinel is seen doing non-villainous things, it's usually with Katherine.
  • Twinkle in the Eye: Whenever Heinel's eyes twinkle, you know someone is going to die. And they do.
  • Ojou Laugh: HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH-HAUGH!. When Heinel foils Zuhl's plan to kill him, he releases an especially hearty one.
  • The Unfettered: His goal is to "save" Boazania by eliminating all that resist the Royal Family's rule, and he doesn't care if the whole world is his enemy. In the Grand Finale, even though all his friends are dead and he has no backup, he willingly challenges Kenichi to a duel even though he knows it could be fatal.
Heinel: "Don't worry, Katherine. I will not die until Voltes V is defeated."
  • Upper-Class Equestrian: He owns a white horse, and rides it into battle in the Grand Finale.
  • Unicorn: Word of God is that Heinel is based on one, being an elegant, horned noble as well as being pure, although it's of the Pure Is Not Good variety.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In a flashback, Heinel was seen trembling and cowering in front of the other noble children, trying to put up a strong front as they attacked him and pelted him with stones. Katherine is shocked and heartbroken on his behalf.
  • Villainous BSoD: Heinel went through these when he found out Gohl/Kentaro Go was his real father, the Go brothers were his younger half-brothers, Zambajil is just an usurping bastard, Katherine was right all along, and one could only guess what happened next. His last words make it all the more tearjerking.
    Heinel: "Father...!"
  • Villain Episode: Several episodes gave Heinel more screentime than the Voltes Team and actually developed him further as a character. This is one of the unique points of the series during its airing time, where the antagonist was shown to be more than a cackling villain or hero that thinks on how to defeat their opponents, having his own dreams and honor (and outwitting other things aside of the Voltes Team), all while not wholly taking away the fact that he's supposed to be the antagonist.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Heinel enjoys sunbathing, drinking wine and performing pagan rituals.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Inverted and invoked. As a child, Heinel was seen as an extension of his father, the traitor Prince Gohl, which motivated him to work towards undoing this reputation and be seen as a hero in the eyes of the Boazanians. He was eventually appointed a position in Zambajil's court, but Zambajil still despised him and had him relentlessly debased to his other court members.
  • Warrior Prince: The Warrior part is more blatant - Heinel knows how to pilot mechs, win swordfights, devise strategies to weaken the enemy and trick his opponents.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: A variant. Ever since he was a child, he was subjected to relentless abuse and humiliation for being the son of a traitor. Since his uncle is the Emperor, his approval would absolve this, but Zambajil deliberately keeps him at an arm's length because he doesn't want him to discover he's the true heir to the throne. However, when Gurul and Belgan gleefully inform Heinel that Zambajil never cared about him and ordered for him to be cut off, Heinel is broken to the point of tears, possibly implying that deep down he genuinely cared about Zambajil and was vying for his approval.
  • Wine Is Classy: Heinel is often seen drinking some unnamed drink in a similar manner that human nobles drink wine.
  • Winter Royal Lady: Male-example: His coat has a collar that resembles a snowflake.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He orders the death of the Voltes team many times (which includes Megumi) and killed Rumi. With Katherine, it doesn't go farther than threats.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • When Hiyoshi is separated from the Voltes Team, Heinel and his aides discuss plans on how to capture and kill him. He also orders Girion to hold the Volt Frigate hostage, which he pilots.
    • Poor, poor Rumi...
  • Worthy Opponent: After him and Kenichi fight it out like gentlemen, he deems Kenichi one. However, he still desires to kill him for the honour of The Boazanian Empire.
  • Wrong Side All Along: After he meets his father for the first time. Both son and father are shocked to see that the former has horns while the latter doesn't - this means Heinel is the son of a Hornless Boazanian, who are the Slave Race - and he understands that his father's "crime" was actually trying to liberate the slaves of the planet.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Oddly enough, Heinel is on both ends of this.
    • Zambajil desires to use Heinel's skills to devastate Earth and bring more slaves to Boazania, but at the same time he plots several assassination attempts on him. Eventually realizing that his efforts are fruitless, he has him exiled and sends Belgan and Gurul in his stead, who try to blow up the Earth with the Magnemite Bomb. Unfortunately for them, the Solar Bird disposes of it.
    • Heinel kills Mr. Sakame once he sabotages Voltes V, revealing that the "Rumi" he was looking forward to seeing again was secretly a robot.

Shin
Alpha

The Prince of the Boazanian Empire and the pilot of Godol. Originally dispatched to Take Over The Earth by his Evil Uncle, Emperor Zambajil, Heinel later comes to realize that the situation isn't what he thought it was and Zambajil is nothing but an usurping bastard.

Heinel's mecha is Godol, the legendary Hero of Another Story who saved Boazania when it was in dire need. Godol itself is a Flying Brick and is capable of delivering mass damage. Stat-wise, Godol tends to be a Jack of All Trades.
