Beast Knights

    open/close all folders

    In General
  • Ambiguous Gender: Only Gardo, Girion and Bonzarus are confirmed to be male.
  • Animal Mecha:
    • Dakugaga is based on a moth.
    • Baizanga seems to be based on a bear.
    • Bonzarus and Bombos are based on dragonflies.
    • Bad Heil and Karakarus based on bats.
    • Galgo is based on a Bengal Tiger.
    • Namazungo is based on a catfish.
    • Garus is based on a wolf.
    • Daiga is based on a dragon.
    • Neegu is based on a serpent.
    • Gondum is based on a rooster.
    • Gonguru is based on a gorilla.
    • Jaguard is based on a jaguar and a shark.
    • Suneizaa resembles the hydra from the Hercules Greek mythos.
    • Zoru, after he combines with his steed, resembles a centaur.
    • Okozenia is based on a trout.
    • Sazarus and Kanigan are based on crabs.
    • Gorgo and Zainon are based on lobsters.
    • Daimon and Saimon appear to be based on both lobsters and crabs.
    • Zaizarus is based on a dinosaur and a rhino.
    • Though unconfirmed, Kamaguria is either based on a dinosaur, or a bat.
    • Aringa is based on a fly.
  • Attack Drone: Heinel and his aides usually guide the robots in aid, giving them orders and informing them of strategies. Girion is an exception, and eventually turns against Heinel.
  • Atrocious Arthropods: In the earlier episodes, most of the Beast Fighters were bug-based, such as the moth-based Dokugaga and the dragonfly-based Bonzarus. Other arthropods include Kanigan and Sazaras (who are based on crabs), Gamenza and Garuman (who are based on turtles) and Zainon and Gorgo (who are based on lobsters).
  • Bell-Bottom-Limbed Bots: Played with. While most of the Beast Knights are Animal Mechas, their armour is usually focused on their torsos. However some Beast Knights like Zoru, Zorugeru, Desraa and Zainon play it staight.
  • Cranial Processing Unit: Voltes V has busted quote a few Beast Knights by attacking their heads. In cases like Gonguru, attacking the head severely weakens them.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Philippine-English dub, their names were changed from Beast Knights to Beast Fighters.
    • In the Italian dub, their names were changed from Beast Knights to Mostri guerrieri.
  • Easily Detachable Robot Parts: Quite a few times, Voltes V has managed to take apart Beast Knights as if they were Lego toys.
  • Horns of Villainy: Much like the noble Boazanians, the Beast Knights have horns. Girion, a Horned Boazanian, has an armour plate with a horn at the forehead.
  • Insectoid Aliens: Dokugaga, Bonzarus, Daiand, Aringa and Tobiurago.
  • Killer Robot: Unlike Voltes V, who was made to protect and serve humanity, the Beast Knights were created with the intent of desctruction and aid the Boazanians' war efforts.
  • Mechanical Abomination: The Beast Knights were crafted to perfection by Boazania's top scientists to absolutely devastate any territory they approach. In the first episode alone, they manage to hit countries all over the world, causing three million fatalities in Italy, burning Buenos Aires to the ground, destroying the Twin Towers and cutting off all commmunication between London and the rest of the world.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: A villainous case as after Zuhl bites the dust, Belgan replaces him and introduces the Maxingal Alloy, an armor impervious to any damage, creating the Armored Beast Fighters. They prove to give Voltes V serious trouble and the only way to defeat them is to use the Ultra Electromagnetic Energy Ball made to weaken the Maxingal Alloy upon contact, leaving them vulnerable to be finished off by Voltes V's Heaven Sword.
  • Mechanical Lifeforms: They are sentient to a degree and blindly follow their masters, apart from instances such as Garus acting out of pettiness towards the puppy who's mother it killed and Galgo malfunctioning and accidentally killing Zaki.
  • Mechanical Monster: The sole purpose of their creation, from birth to death, is to wreak endless havoc on the human race.
  • Mechanical Muscles: Gonguru, Desraa, Zainon and Zorugeru count. Quite a few times, this trope is Justified:
    • Girion was a gladiator with years of training and experience. He fought dilligently, to gain a higher position in society, being looked down upon despite being Horned because of having Hornless Parents. When Heinel and his aides meet him for the first time, he's scrapping opponents left and right.
    • Godol is a Hero of Another Story who saved Boazania from an unnamed incident. His feat was so worthy it caused the Boazanians to worship him as a hero and have a statue of him in the Celestial Palace. When Heinel approaches him, he is depicted with massive, bulging muscles on his arms and legs.
  • Metal Muncher: The Beast Knights don't eat metal, but some crush it between their mouths/jaws as if it were food.
  • Monster of the Week: In the earlier episodes, the Beast Fighters would appear Once per Episode (or in some cases, twice per episode), though later episodes slowed down in favour of story-based plots. The last three episodes of the series lack a Beast Knight antagonist except for the Grand Finale, where Heinel pilots Godol.
  • Noisy Robots: Every step most Beast Knights take is accompanied by a loud booming sound, and their attacks are usually accompanied by stock sound effects.
  • Powered Armor: This trope applies to the Beast Knights powered by Belgan's Maxingal Alloy.
  • Robeast: All of them are Robeasts, sans Gardo.
  • Robot Antennae: Their Horns of Villainy double as robot antennae.
  • Robot Soldier: Their function is to defeat Voltes V, or die fighting. Girion is the most glaring example, being the child of slaves.
  • Telescoping Robot: Don't ask how they manage to pack missiles, beams, heat-rays and other powers during combat, it'll ruin the immersion.
  • Undignified Death: Expect every Beast Knight to suffer through a humiliating beatdown before being taken out by the V-Cut. Baizanga in particular was subject to Kenichi's rage for causing the death of Mitsuyo and Gonguru suffered a similar fate for being behind Professor Hamaguchi's death. Galgo, though initially gaining the upper hand during battle, was misled into consuming too much energy and attacked the spaceship of its own allynote , thus exploding. Garus was weakened by the puppy who's mother it killed before running into the titular robot's sword, and Garuman suffers from an Oh, Crap! moment before his defeat.
  • Upgrade vs. Prototype Fight: Played with. While Voltes V was created by acclaimed scientist and former Boazanian Minister of Science of Technology Kentaro Go, all of the Beast Fighters post-Okozenia (except for Godol) are made of Belgan's Maxingal Armour.
  • Vertical Mecha Fins: Most promininent in Okozenia, Dianeegu, Bonzarus and Kanigan. Beast Knights created with the Maxingal Alloy are also prone to this.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Many Beast Knights do not differentiate between adult and child in combat and will sweep up civilians in combat, such as Neegu deciding to trash a competition full of children in its debut and Girion holding Hiyoshi's vehicle hostage.

    Dokugaga

Dokugaga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dokugagaundheinel.png
Dokugaga
The first Beast Knight of the Boazanian forces.

  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: It's possible that like Garus, Dokugaga was once a regular-sized animal until either Katherine or Zuhl had it mutated.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Italian dub, Dokugaga was known as Dokutran.
  • Green and Mean: Dokugaga's colour scheme is primarily green.
  • Punny Name: Dokugaga’s name is derived from dokuga (ドクガ), the Japanese name for Artaxa subflava.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Due to the Boazanians severely underestimating the humans, they assumed Dokugaga would finish off Voltes V and were taken aback when he didn't. After his defeat, Heinel ordered his aides to create stronger Beast Fighters.
  • The Worf Effect: Subjected to this by Voltes V to give Heinel and his generals that conquering Earth will not be a piece of cake as they thought.

    Baizanga

The second Beast Knight of the Boazanian forces.

  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Italian dub, Baizanga was known as Zanger.
  • Eye Beams: Baizanga can produce bright yellow beams from its eyes.
  • Hero Killer: During battle, Baizanga manages to bind Voltes V, and comes close to finishing them for good. Refusing to watch and do nothing, Mitsuyo Go abandons her hospital room and forces herself into a jet plane, before crashing into Baizanga. The Voltes team are stunned, but for Kenichi, the astonishment quickly turns to vitiriol as he subjects Baizanga to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown before finishing it off with the V-Cut.
  • Horned Humanoid: At one point, he uses his horns to pierce the titular robot.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Baizanga can shoot an array of spikes from the top of it's head.

    Bonzarus

Bonzarus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltes_v_bonzarus.png
Bonzarus
The third Beast Knight of the Boazanian forces.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Bonzarus is the first Beast Knight seen capable of speaking and showing intelligence. The others (sans Gilligan and Gardo, who aren't mechas) merely roar, though they are capable of understanding Heinel, Jangal, Katherine, Zuhl and Belgan's orders.
  • Breath Weapon: Like its predecessor, Baizanga, Bonzarus breathes fire.
  • It Can Think: For reasons never explained, Bonzarus expresses sentience that its fellow Beast Knights lack.
  • Robo Speak: Averted. Bonzarus speaks like a normal person.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/voltes_v_shrek.png
Gladiator
An unfortunate Beast Knight who falls in battle by Gardo's sword in a contest over Heinel's favour.

  • Acrofatic: Despite looking like a fat, oafish, orc, Gladiator, as its name implies, is capable of holding a fight. Unfortunately for it, Gardo is an extremely skilled Blood Knight.
  • Meaningful Name: He is a warrior that fights for the entertainment of the nobles, and also suffers a brutal death at the hands of Gardo.
  • Satellite Character: Gladiator didn't even get to fight Voltes V as he was annihilated by Gardo, as the latter wanted to prove his strength to Prince Heinel.
  • The Worf Effect: Subjected to this by Gardo who demonstrates his superior swordsmanship skills which will prove trouble to Voltes V.

    Gardo

Gardo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gardo.png
Gardo
The fourth Beast Knight of the Boazanian forces.

  • Blood Knight: He is a Master Swordsman and takes pleasure in the idea of combat with Voltes V.
  • Horned Humanoid: Invoked trope. Gardo is a giant alien from another planet, but Heinel bestowed horns on him after he pledged loyalty to the Boazanian Empire.
  • Made of Iron: As he's not a mech but flesh and blood, he easily withstands bombardments from Earth Defense Force ships and jets before cutting them down. Of course, this does not save him from Voltes V's Heaven Sword cutting him apart.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Gardo has a dopey grin on his face which almost never falters, even when he's in battle.
  • Red Is Violent: Subverted. Gardo's colour scheme is mostly orange, but he's a catacylsm of destruction wherever he goes.
  • Samurai: He is a samurai in space who wields a katana in battle.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has long, flowing white hair, but sees the world as a playground for destruction.

However, Voltes V uses Chain Knuckles to quell the assault, and frees itself using the Ultra Electromagnetic Beam. Daineegu is then subjected to the Super Electromagnetic tops before the V-Cut finishes it off.

  • Achilles' Heel: The armour on Galgo's sides is fragile, something Zaki attempts to exploit so that he can have Heinel killed. Since Zuhl is being watched by Heinel's Mooks, he is forced to comply.

  • Four-Legged Insect: Bombus is humanoid to a degree and has limbs that resemble arms and legs despite being an insect.
  • Green and Mean: Bombus's colour scheme is primarily green with shades of dark pink.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Bombus or Bombos?
  • Spy Bot: In a way, since it's purpose was to analyze the innards of Voltes V.

  • Giant Enemy Crab: Sazarus is a rare example of a Giant Enemy hermit crab. It is essentially a bundle of blades, and during combat, manages to pierce Voltes V's armour.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: This Beast Knight is why Zuhl genuinely believed Kentaro Goh was dead, as during the spar it had with Voltes V, Kentaro got caught up in the destruction and fell into the ocean. He was actually rescued by Dange and his group of rebels, but Zuhl only saw him fall from the crumbling cliff.
  • Studded Shell: Sazarus's shell and pincers are studded with thin, sharp spikes, giving it a heavily resemblance to raw crystal.

Beast Knight form
The twenty seventh Beast Knight of the Boazanian forces.

  • Bad People Abuse Animals: A variant of this trope where an animal abuses a fellow animal to establish it's nature as a villain. Prior to Katherine mutating it, Garus murdered a mother dog in front of its own puppy For the Evulz.
  • Fragile Speedster: Katherine's strategy to defeat Voltes V is to take advantage of the robot's lack of agility and have Garus attack it from multiple angles. Due to it's speed, Garus appears almost invisible to the Voltes team. It nearly works, but Voltes V receives help from Sakonji and the puppy, and in a blind rage Garus runs into Voltes V's sword and gets cut.
  • Lightning Bruiser: One of its strongest points. It moves so fast that Voltes V is unable to identify its position.
  • Karmic Death: The puppy of the dog that Garus killed plays a small role in defeating it, by sabotaging it during battle.
  • Savage Wolves: Katherine remarks on Garus being one before she mutates it.
  • Shapeshifting: Apart from being a Fragile Speedster, Garus can grow and shrink.
  • The Big Bad Wolf: Garus murders domesticated canines and inflicts heavy damage on Voltes V. It gets so bad mid-battle that Sakonji has to intervene by launching missiles at it from Big Falcon.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Garus charges at Voltes V as the robot holds the Sword of Heaven. You can probably guess what happens next.

Luckily, the Mechanical Eagle arrives in time and shoots Desraa, which allows Voltes V to attack it's head and then slice it in with the Heaven Sword. Before the Mechanical Eagle departs, it leaves blueprints for upgrades on the titular robot.
  • Take That!: The animators of Voltes V intended for Desraa to be a Take That! towards Dessler of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, which was being aired on rival TV station TV Yomiuri at the time. This is lampshaded by Prince Heinel laughing at how ugly Desraa's appearance is.

  • Dead Guy on Display: After Heinel has him tortured, he has his remains delivered to Big Falcon to show them what happens to those who go against the Boazanian Empire.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Italian dub, Gilligan was known as Ghilvan.
  • Electric Torture: Heinel subjects him to this before subjecting him to capital punishment.
  • Execution: After he criticizes Heinel, refuses to take orders from him, and says that he was happier under Dange, Heinel deems him a "traitor" and orders for him to be publicly executed, a cruel act that horrifies even Katherine and Jangal.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Knows that his words will get him killed, but prefers death to hurting Kenichi and going against General Dange.
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: Subverted. As a gladiator, Girion uses an axe and a shield.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Gilligan or Girion? Gilligan is the dub name, but it's used even in the Wiki, leading to confusion. The original Japanese uses Girion/Giron.
  • Token Good Teammate: Out of all the Beast Fighters, Girion is the only one who expresses horror at Heinel's cruelty and turns against him.
  • Was Once a Man: He was a Boazanian warrior who got turned into a Beast Knight. After he was executed, metal parts within his Beast Knight body were shown.

  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the Italian dub, Diand was known as Dyan.
  • Mind Control: One of Daiand's powers. When someone places their finger in Daiand's ring form, they become under the control of Belgan. The specifics of the Mind Control aren't clear, but in Katherine's case, it was instantly broken after hearing Heinel's voice.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Those under Daiand's control have eyes that glow yellow.
  • Punny Name: Daiand's name is a pun on Daimond, since it has no face sans a sparkling jewel, and it's hidden form is a gem on a ring.

Godol

The final Beast Knight of the series, Godol at first appears to be a statue of a Boazanian hero, but in actuality is a mecha. He is revered as a supernatural figure, as a prophecy has it that he would make a Boazanian who is a true warrior the saviour of Boazania, and Heinel prays to him. It is Heinel himself who fulfills the prophecy by throwing himself into the flames of Godol, expecting death, but to his surprise he falls down a tunnel and into a cockpit, and realizes that Godol was a mecha Hidden in Plain Sight.

The details of Godol's heroics aren't exactly specified.

  • Ascended Extra: In the Super Robot Wars series, guess who's Heinel's main mecha?
  • Advertised Extra: Godol's first (and only) role was in the Grand Finale, but he appears in several pieces of promotional media and merchandise. In the Super Robot Wars games, he's Heinel's main mecha.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Zambajil know the statue was secretly a Humongous Mecha or not? If so, what was it doing in his Celestial Palace? Zambajil isn't a pilot, so he has no reason to keep Godol there.note
  • Bishōnen Line: Invoked. Godol was explicitly modelled after the heroic bishōnen Boazanian of the same name.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Godol was a great Boazanian hero, and his statue is painted a shiny dark blue colour. His hair appears to be a shade between turqouise-green and cyan.
  • The Dreaded: Godol is this as the hornless Boazanians flee in terror upon seeing Boazanian hero's giant statue form appear before them and Voltes Team prior to shaking off the stone to reveal its true form as a mecha piloted by Heinel.
  • Dub Name Change: In the Italian dub, Godol was known as Goden.
  • Expy: Downplayed. The prophecy of Godol saving Boazania in it's time of need is a darker version of Raideen's prophecy that The Chosen One will save the world with the titular robot created by the Mu Empire.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Godol can breathe blue fire. Interestingly enough, his hair is shaped like a blue flame as well.
  • First Church of Mecha: Subverted. Heinel didn't know Godol was a Mecha, and assumed it to be a statue when he prayed to it. After he threw himself into Godol's flames, he then realized it was secretly a Super Robot. Upon seeing Godol rise, the Boazanian rebels cower, fearing that the prophecy of Godol saving Boazania in its time of need has come true.
  • Final Boss: Under Heinel's control, Godol functions as the main antagonist of the final episode.
  • God Guise: To Heinel's shock, the statue of Godol was a Super Robot all along. It was just waiting for the right person to pilot it.
  • Hero of Another Story: Godol was a Boazanian hero who saved the planet from devastation aeons before the events of the series.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: No one would suspect that all this time, the giant statue of a Boazanian hero is actually a Humongous Mecha underneath its stone.
  • Only the Chosen May Pilot: The statue of Godol is secretly a Humongous Mecha, but this fact is unknown to most. To enter, one must pass the Secret Test of Character - i.e., throw yourself into the statue's flames - as a show of dedication to Godol.
  • Spikes of Villainy: When Heinel enters Godol, the helmet that straps itself to his head is adorned with spikes on the top.
  • Telescoping Robot: We're shown the cockpit and controls of Godol, but it's never explained where and how the fire he breathes is stored. Especially when Voltes V stabbed Godol in the stomach with the Sword of Heaven.
