All Care Bears and Cousins

  • Badass Family: A group of adorable, innocent, pastel-colored creatures, who live in a fluffy rainbow-and-cloud world in the sky...and battle Eldritch Abominations, Evil Sorcerers, Mad Scientists and other threats to the happiness and safety of those below, particularly children. Although they're not explicitly related, they're referred to as "The Care Bears Family" and in the second movie were all adopted by the same two people.
  • Compressed Vice: In the TV Series, they tended to have some.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The second movie opens with True Heart Bear and Noble Heart Horse fleeing from Dark Heart with the baby Bears and Cousins (referred to specifically as orphans) sleeping in the berth of their ship. When Dark Heart catches up, they barely manage to escape being killed via the intervention of the Great Wishing Star. Although not explicitly stated, this implies that Dark Heart is the one who orphaned them.
  • Happily Adopted: In Care Bears Movie II True Heart and Noble Heart raise the Bears and Cousins from babyhood to not-babyhood.
  • Mysterious Past: Care Bears Movie II is the only media that discusses where they come from, and even that's got almost no detail.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: In Care Bears Movie II all the baby Bears and Cousins hit what appears to be full maturity in roughly a two-week span.
  • The Pollyanna: Although they have individual personalities, as a whole they (except Grumpy) could easily be described as cheerful and confident as a rule, even a little child-like. And Grumpy's not quite as cynical as he seems at first.

Main Bears

    All Bears
  • Flight: In the earliest books, the bears could do this on their own. Later, the more toyetic Cloud Cars and Rainbow Rollers were introduced.
  • Interspecies Adoption: The second movie shows how they were adopted by True Heart (another bear) and Noble Heart (a horse).

    Tenderheart Bear

Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Gabriela Willer (Mexican dubs of the animated films), Gianina Talloni (Chilean dub of the DIC and Nelvana series, plus the Chilean dub of The Care Bears: Adventure in Wonderland), Jhonny Torres (Venezuelan dub of the Nelvana series)

  • Jack of All Trades: Of all the Care Bears, he's the only one without a particular specialty.
  • The Leader: Of the Care Bears.
  • The Reliable One: The most level-headed and mature of the Care Bears. In the Nelvana series, there's a light implication that he may be a bit older than the others, as he's the only one who remembers Grams Bear clearly.

    Birthday Bear

Voiced in English by: Jayne Eastwood
Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Rocío Prado (Mexican dub/The Care Bears Movie), Laura Olazábal (Chilean dub of the DIC and Nelvana series)

Golden-yellow in color, Birthday Bear's symbol is a cupcake. His métier is birthdays, or more generally celebrations.

Voiced in English by: Melleny Brown
Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Fabiola Sanchez (Panamian dub of the DIC series), Laura Olazábal (Chilean dub of the DIC and Nelvana series), Josefina Nuñez (Venezuelan dub of the Nelvana series/1st voice), Carmen Suarez (Venezuelan dub of the Nelvana series/2nd voice)

You can call Cheer Bear, anytime you're sad!
I'll put you in the pink and make you feel real glad!
——
  • The Ditz: Flanderized into one as the Nelvana series went on.
  • '80s Hair: She was given a pony-tail in the later seasons of the Nelvana animated series.
  • Girly Girl: A big fan of things like clothes, cute things, and ruffles and frills, etc.
  • The Heart: As shown when she rallies the Care Bears and Cousins against Dark Heart in the second movie.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Will occasionally burst out in rhyming cheers.
  • She's a Man in Japan: In the French European and German dubs of the DiC series, she's a male. (In the French dub, she's voiced by Roger Carel.)
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Treat Heart Pig's Tomboy.

    Friend Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/images_4_165.jpg
Voiced in English by: Eva Almos
Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Alma Nuri (Mexican dub/The Care Bears Movie)
Light orange in color, her symbol is two entwined flowers. She embodies the spirit of friendship and is extremely outgoing.
  • Nice Girl: A sweet-natured friend to everyone.
  • Friend to All Children: And everyone else, hence her name.
  • Ship Tease: With Secret Bear - she's the only one he/she actually hangs around with and talks to.
  • Those Two Girls: With Secret Bear. When they're both girls, that is.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: As she's pretty much the only one Secret Bear will directly talk to (usually through whispers), she is usually the one who informs the others what he's saying.

    Funshine Bear

Voiced by: Patrice Black (DIC), Nonnie Griffin (Nelvana)

Got the sun on my tummy and a smile on my face!
I'm ready for a party, any time any place!
——
  • The Prankster: One episode revolves around her and Playful Heart Monkey taking their pranks too far.

    Grumpy Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grumpy_2.jpg
Voiced in English by: Bob Dermer
Voiced in Latin American Spanish by: Hector Lee (Mexican dub/The Care Bears Movie), Arturo Mercado (First Mexican dub/Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation), Laura Torres (Mexican dub/The Care Bears: Adventure in Wonderland), Juan Carlos Vazquez (First Venezuelan dub of the Nelvana series, seasons 2-3), Rebeca Aponte (Second Venezuelan dub of the Nelvana series, seasons 2-3)

My name's Grumpy Bear, I'm always feeling blue.
If it's not one thing it's another, oh what am I to do?

  • Big Eater: In Adventures in Wonderland. "Now hold your tushy-tags, 'cause it's time I spoke, can't remember when I ate last... I'm fillin' up my belly with ice cream and jelly and toppin' it with pickled beets, mmm-hmm, toppin' it with pickled beets." Worth pointing out, this was just for the movie, and only because he'd been dragged away from his breakfast at the start of the film and denied food throughout.
  • Butt-Monkey: An example of this is "No Business Like Snow Business" when he's roped into looking after Hugs and Tugs and ends up getting a cold from being in the snow.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He likes to always carry an umbrella in case of rain.
  • The Complainer Is Always Wrong: Sometimes invoked this trope, but surprisingly not to the extremes seen in other 1980s kid's cartoons. Or, perhaps not so surprisingly, given that the idea of the character was to teach kids that it's okay to sometimes be grumpy. If he was always wrong, that would send the opposite message.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's grumpy, negative and always complains about something, but at the end of the day, he's still a Care Bear.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Invented a teleporter in the first movie, and creates a robot alongside Bright Heart Raccoon in one episode of the TV series.
  • Papa Bear: Don't mess with his pals and cousins.
  • Parasol Parachute: His umbrella has saved him from several rough landings.
  • Ship Tease: Ironically, with Cheer Bear in the DiC version.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Unlike his pals and cousins, exposing Grumpy Bear to strong negative emotions will cause no ill effect on him, because he's already negative.
    • In a comic story, No Heart exposed the Care Bears to a potion that made them sick and corrupted their personalities into a negative version of themselves. Turns out that Grumpy Bear's corrupted self is an incredibly nice, selfless and heroic personality who took over the bears' chores all by himself, then took care of the sick bears all by himself and finally ventured into No Heart's lair to get the ingredients for a cure, again all by himself.
    • Similarly, in the DiC series, Professor Coldheart used a magic mirror to reverse the Care Bears' and Cousins' personalities. Reverse Grumpy eagerly stepped up to the challenge of saving the day.
    • Basically, any attempt to corrupt Grumpy Bear's personality into a twisted one is guaranteed to fail.
  • Tsundere: He might loudly complain about everything, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care.

    Love-A-Lot Bear

Voiced by: Linda Sorenson (DIC)

The embodiment of Love, Love-A-Lot is the pink bear with the double heart symbol.

    Good Luck Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/good_luck_bear_care_bears_family_3.jpg
Voiced by: Dan Hennessey (DIC), Marla Lukofsky (Nelvana)

  • Bad Luck Charm: Finding a five leaf clover can reverse his luck and turn him into a walking disaster zone.
  • Born Lucky: His main character trait.
  • Gender Flip: The first specials had him as male, the movie had him female, then he went back to being male.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: He lets Polite Panda go, realizing that the Valley needs them just as much as they need it.
  • Love at First Sight: With Polite Panda.
  • Magic Feather: At one point he gives a girl who's convinced she's a jinx a "lucky charm" in a box. When she approaches her life with newfound confidence, he reveals the box was empty all along.
  • Million to One Chance:
  • Oireland: In the early cartoon series...
  • Unexplained Accent: All the other bears have American accents, but in the original specials and the DIC episodes he usually has an (approximation of an) Irish accent. However, this is averted in a few other installments where he is American just like them.
  • The Jinx: This is Good Luck Bear's second skill: he can send a bad luck stare to jinx someone else, but he only uses this power as a last resort because he really does not like it.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Polite. She and Perfect can't leave the valley or else it will be covered in snow, meaning the animals, plants, and humans will die. She and Good Luck can't be together because of this, much to their sadness.

    Wish Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wish_1.png
I'm a Wish Bear, that's what I do,
And maybe I can help you make your dreams come true.

  • Binocular Shot: Wish Bear's almost always the one manning the Star-o-scope, which allows her to see and hear kids in trouble on Earth and notify the others.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Throughout Land Without Feelings, she tries to make wishes but immediately gets interrupted by the more boisterous bears. Finally, as they're trying to figure out a way into Coldheart's castle she suggests wishing their way in, and when Grumpy protests she calls the others out for never letting her finish what she's trying to wish for. When she makes the wish, after a couple of seconds it works perfectly, teleporting them inside.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: She's very good at tuning to Earth just when something's going wrong.
  • Make a Wish: When she does this, it actually works...at least sometimes.
  • The Quiet One: In this era, Wish Bear is rather soft-spoken. One special has her getting frustrated with being spoken over by the others.
  • Wish Upon a Shooting Star: That's her motif, and she actually does it in a few episodes.

    Bedtime Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bedtime_1.png
Voiced by: Theresa Sears (DIC), Ellen-Ray Hennessy (Nelvana)

  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: In the series, he demonstrates impressive competence when a situation arises that requires him to wake up—namely everyone else being put under a sleep curse.
  • Dream Weaver: The books state that it's his job to being people sweet dreams.
  • Heavy Sleeper: In the first movie Bedtime Bear stays asleep after he falls into the ocean.
  • No-Sell: His spotlight episode has him being the only Care Bear to resist No Heart's sleeping spell—because he was already asleep when it was cast.

    Champ Bear

Voiced by: Theresa Sears (DIC), Anni Evans (Nelvana)

    True Heart Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/true_heart_movie_ii.png
Voiced by: Maxine Miller (movie), Carolyn Scott (Nelvana)
Debuting in the second Movie, she was the caretaker of the young care bears and brought them to the Kingdom of Caring.
  • Action Mom: In the second movie she's the adoptive mother figure to the Bears and Cousins, and battles alongside them.
  • Age Lift: Originally she was older than the other Bears (with the possible exception of Grams) and acted as a parental figure to them while they were growing up. Later incarnations of her is the same age as everyone else.
  • Arch-Enemy: Although Dark Heart is an enemy to all the Bears and Cousins, she and Noble Heart were the first of the family to encounter him as adults, and eventually try to chase him and finish him off on their own after he flees.
  • Mama Bear: Protective of the Bears and Cousins. Bonus points for actually being a bear.
  • Nonstandard Character Design:
    • In the second movie and Nelvana series, she's the only bear with actual hair different from her fur color—namely a shock of purple and pink hair.
    • For the Welcome to Care-a-Lot franchise, she appeared only as a plush toy and sported a multi-colored pastel tie-dye like design for her main fur color. This is opposed to the normal Care Bear look, which is a single color for the primary fur, other than the white belly with the belly badge and white inner-ear coloring.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Although details are unclear, they managed to escape from Dark Heart with a number of orphans of their kind—at least until he caught up with them.
  • Parental Substitute: For the other bears and Cousins.
  • Ship Tease: A bit with Noble Heart Horse—after all, they share a parental role with the cubs and also seem to share a room, at least.
  • Team Mom: Was the first Care Bear and was the one who saved the Bears and Cousins with Noble Heart, so she acts as a motherly figure to them all.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: After Dark Heart's attack on Care-A-Lot is fended off, she and Noble Heart go after him on their own to finish him off while he was weak, leaving their adoptive kids to carry on their mission of protecting caring. This action has this vibe, considering he's their Arch-Enemy.

Recurring Bears

    Grams Bear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gramsbear.PNG
Voiced by: Pauline Rennie

The matriarch of the Care Bears, a wise old lady who usually takes care of Hugs and Tugs. She's the purple-grey bear with the rose symbol.

  • Apron Matron: Grams deeply cares for the other bears.
  • Arch-Enemy: In the cartoon, she has a personal adversary called Sour Sam the Pie Man, a baker who creates "crab apple" pies and tarts that plunge the consumer into a deeply negative mood. Her "Happy Apple" treats are able to cure this affliction.
  • Canon Welding: Generally, the Nelvana series hews to the second movie for its continuity, however Grams is a character who appeared in the media prior to the movies and in the first movie. In the second, the Care Bears and Cousins were orphaned, implicitly by Dark Heart, and Grams didn't appear. In what appears to be intended as her introductory episode, she's treated as though the Bears hadn't seen her in years, with Tenderheart apparently remembering her most clearly.
  • Cool Old Lady: She's a grandmotherly figure to all of the bears, who's introduced in the series riding her cloud scooter (read:motorcycle) and dances wildly with the cubs shortly after then grabs a guitar and starts playing rock music. As it turned out, she was apparently a stereotypical old lady-type when Tenderheart knew her, but then decided to change her life and start having fun instead.
  • Mama Bear: Most prominent in the comics, but she has definite traits of it in the cartoon as well.
  • Never Mess with Granny: In one comic story, No Heart even flat-out admits that Grams is probably the most dangerous of the Care Bears, because her magic is the oldest and most powerful. She's also thrown down a couple times in the cartoon as well.
  • Nice Girl: A grandmotherly, kind bear.

    Perfect and Polite Panda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pandabears.PNG
Voiced by: Greg Swanson and Laurie Waller Benson respectively

Perfect (Male, star medal symbol) and Polite (Female, rose symbol) Panda are twins who were separated from the others as babies during an attack by Noheart. Discovered by coincidence in an isolated valley, they rejoined their brethren... but this turned out to be a terrible idea.

    Baby Hugs and Tugs
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/577183af72b061d0dc55ad14edfff0fc.jpg
Voiced by: Terri Hawkes and Melleny Brown respectively

A duo of baby Care Bear cubs who are cared for by Grams Bear and admire the work of the older civilians Care-A-Lot, hoping to join them in their missions once they grow up. However, they are rather infamous for causing mischief or landing themselves into trouble.

  • The Cutie: Both of them are rather cute and endearing.
  • Disappeared Dad / Missing Mom: The identities of the cubs' parents (if they have any at all, that is) has yet to be disclosed, they are primarily under the care of Grams Bear and mentored by the rest of the adult Care Bears and cousins.
  • Half-Identical Twins: They're identical to one another. The only difference is their color scheme and gender.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Hugs has pink fur and is a girl, while Tugs has blue fur and is a boy.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Their names rhyme with one another.
  • Vague Age: While "Baby" is right in their names and they wear diapers, Hugs and Tugs behave more like preschoolers than they do genuine babies or toddlers.

The Care Bear Cousins

    All cousins
See Care Bears for more information.
  • Ambiguous Gender: If you thought the Care Bears had trouble keeping their genders straight between media, most of the cousins can't even stay the same gender between books. One of the books even uses "he" for each of them, except for Cozy Heart and Treat Heart, and that's likely only because they're barely in it! Yes, even Gentle Heart.
  • Happily Adopted:
    • In the first film after the Care Bears discovered both the Forest of Feelings and the Cousins, they joyfully adopt both into the family.
    • Like the bears, all of the cousins were babies adopted by True Heart Bear and Noble Heart Horse in Care Bears Movie II.
  • Interspecies Adoption: They are all animals of different species that were adopted by bears, (and have a bear and a horse as adoptive parents).

    Brave Heart Lion
Voiced by: Dan Hennessey (DIC and Nelvana)

  • Beneath the Mask: He tends to act more courageous than he actually is, but he'll pull it together when he has to.
  • Butt-Monkey: Falls victim to various misfortunes, especially in the storytime segments.
  • Character Catchphrase: "CHARGE!!!"
  • The Leader: Of the Care Bear Cousins.
  • Morphic Resonance: Of a sort. In "fantasy" segments of the TV series, he tends to play authority figures.
  • Vocal Evolution: He sounded soft and smooth-sounding in the DIC episodes before evolving into the powerful Large Ham later on.

    Bright Heart Raccoon
Voiced by: Jim Henshaw (Di C and the first two films), Billie Mae Richards (Nelvana)

Bright Heart Raccoon, that's me!
I can solve any problem thinking logically.
——
  • Ditzy Genius: He is smart but is rather impulsive at times, his inventions also go wrong for him.
  • The Smart Guy: He's considered to be one of the most intelligent characters of the series. In the Nelvana series, Bright Heart is sometimes seen making newer inventions while one episode featured him creating a friendly robot with Grumpy Bear's assistance.

    Cozy Heart Penguin
Voiced by: Pauline Rennie (DIC and Nelvana)

  • Character Tic: She is sometimes heard whistling between her sentences.
  • The Heart: According to their book profile, her role is to make those around her feel as comfortable and confident as possible.

    Lotsa Heart Elephant
Voiced by: Luba Goy (DIC and Nelvana)

  • Big Eater: As might be expected from an elephant.
  • Character Catchphrase: "[A statement], and that's the truth!".
  • Determinator: According to their book profile, Lotsa Heart's particular role is to show people that real strength lies in never saying "it can't be done".

    Loyal Heart Dog
Voiced by: Dan Hennessey (DIC)

  • The Voiceless: In the Nelvana generation, he never speaks.
  • Undying Loyalty: According to their book profile his role is to teach kids that loyalty and honesty are the foundation of true friendship.

    Proud Heart Cat
Proud Heart Cat doesn't have a lot to say,
But he's perfect in every way!
——
  • Cats Are Mean: "Mean" may not be quite the right word, but "Home Sweet Homeless", Proud Heart's spotlight episode, has her demonstrate a tendency toward conceitedness.
  • Challenge Seeker: Maybe not "seeker", but their book profile mentions that their role is to show people that they should always do their best and never shy away from a challenge.
  • Consummate Professional: Bordering on The Perfectionist. One of the books notes that they have a knack for getting everything just right, which makes them great party planners, and one of the DiC episodes shows her getting frustrated with Playful Heart for messing up her preparations for Good Luck and Tenderheart's visit to the Forest. Preparations which included polishing flowers to a mirror sheen.

    Playful Heart Monkey
Voiced by: Marla Lukofsky (DIC and Nelvana)

  • Keet: Hyperactive, fun-loving and full of pranks.
  • The Prankster: One episode revolves around him and Funshine Bear taking their pranks too far.

    Gentle Heart Lamb
Voiced by: Luba Goy (DIC and Nelvana)

  • Animal Species Accent: She always speaks in a bleating pattern like a real sheep.
  • No-Sell: As seen in "Birthday Bear's Blues", her stare has zero effect on No Heart. This makes Gentle Heart the only member of The Care Bear Family who's Stare/Call doesn't work against antagonists. Then again, it's usually performed in groups.
  • The Quiet One: Compared to Loyal Heart, while she's actually given speaking roles of both animated incarnations. Gentle Heart is also one of the quieter members of the Cousins. She always talks in a soft-speaking and quite tone compared to the other characters.
  • Sweet Sheep: Despite her timid nature, she's one of the sweetest members of the Care Bear Family.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very timid and meek and gets easily frightened compared to the other Care Bears and Cousins.

    Swift Heart Rabbit
Voiced by: Eva Almos (DIC), Paulina Gillis (Nelvana)

  • Famous Ancestor: The third film reveals that she's the niece of the White Rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Don't even try to wrap your mind around that.
  • Pride: One episode has her faith in her speed leading her into a tortoise-and-hare plot.
  • Super-Speed: Demonstrates this on occasion.

    Treat Heart Pig
Voiced by: Pauline Rennie

    Noble Heart Horse
Voiced by: Pam Hyatt (movie), Eric Peterson (Nelvana)

  • Arch-Enemy: Although Dark Heart is an enemy to all the Bears and Cousins, he and True Heart were the first of the family to encounter him as adults, and eventually try to chase him and finish him off on their own after he flees.
  • Cartoon Creature: Crossing an equine into the Nelvana Care Bears style doesn't look much like a horse at first glace, particularly when it comes to lack of hooves. Numerous designs in other media vary between more or less equine, which can work okay or be awfully disturbing.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Possessed of a differently colored mane and tail (pale seafoam and violet blue) than his fur color (lavender), which doesn't show up in the other characters.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Although details are unclear, they managed to escape from Dark Heart with a number of orphans of their kind—at least until he caught up with them.
  • Parental Substitute: For the other Cousins and bears.
  • Ship Tease: A bit with True Heart Bear—after all, they share a parental role with the cubs and also seem to share a room, at least.
  • Team Dad: Was the first Care Bear Cousin and was the one who saved the Bears and Cousins with True Heart, so he acts as a fatherly figure to them all.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: After Dark Heart's attack on Care-A-Lot is fended off, he and True Heart go after him on their own to finish him off while he was weak, leaving their adoptive kids to carry on their mission of protecting caring. This action has this vibe, considering he's their Arch-Enemy.

Other Allies

    Starbuddies and Heartbuddies

Star- and Heartbuddies are small beings in the shape of stars and hearts who help out the Care Bears and Cousins with day-to-day tasks, missions and so forth.

  • Empathy Pet: Often they're there to react to things alongside the Care Bears.
  • Fantastic Light Source: Starbuddies can control how brightly they shine and have been used to signal between teams.
  • Flight: This is their default mode of travel, and it makes them useful for sending messages and so forth.
  • Metamorphosis: According to the series, Once they hit a certain point in their lifespan, Starbuddies need to be taken to Big Star Point so they can actually become stars in the heavens. What about Heartbuddies? ...Maybe we're better off not knowing.
  • Sidekick: They often chip to assist the Bears with what they're doing, such as chores and the like. Starbuddies at least have also been shown to do useful things like pick locks or act like beacons.
  • Team Pet: Starbuddies tend to be associated with the Bears in art. Heartbuddies, with the Cousins.

    The Great Wishing Star
Voiced by: Chris Wiggins
Appearing exclusively in the second movie, The Great Wishing Star is a powerful god-like entity who rescues the Bears and Cousins and gives them their powers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Sweeps True and Noble Heart's ship and the baby Bears and Cousins within up to the heavens when Dark Heart catches up to them. Without this intervention, Dark Heart would likely have killed/drowned them.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: At the end of the second movie, The Great Wishing Star speaks to the audience directly, thanking the audience.
  • Expy: Basically, he's kind of like, well...God, with the Star and Heart Buddies serving as angel stand-ins for him and the Care Bears being empowered specifically to spread his teachings about love and caring and protect people from the Satanic archetype below. Very original.
  • God's Hands Are Tied: Why, exactly, he doesn't take more of an active role in fighting Dark Heart isn't clear.
  • The Leader: Of the star and heartbuddies. At least in the second movie.
  • The Narrator: Serves as this throughout the movie, commenting on the growth of the Care Bears.
  • Super-Empowering: In the second movie, he's the one who gives the Bears their tummy symbols and the power that goes with them.

Villains

    Professor Cold Heart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ef32cf73_0fcc_40e6_84f3_f33b8c37c908.jpeg
Voiced by: Len Carlson
Appearing in the 1980s DIC series, and the first villain that the Care Bears faced. A blue-skinned, white-haired Mad Scientist obsessed with literally and emotionally freezing the rest of the world over. He and his bumbling assistant Frostbite have been quietly removed from continuity, since they were DiC-original characters and, when Nelvana took the rights, they couldn't take the Professor.
  • An Ice Person: He's been described as "a kindergartener's Mister Freeze". He has blue skin and white hair, which calls to mind ice and snow, always dresses in wintery clothing, and his technology and schemes revolve around emotionally and literally freezing things.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Does it often at the first sighting of the bears. "Disgusting aren't they?"
  • Breaking Speech: One of his favorite tactics is to target emotionally vulnerable children and push them over the edge and into his service.
  • Complexity Addiction: Well, manipulation addiction at least. Cold Heart indulged in his Manipulative Bastard tendencies at just about any given occasion, whether or not it actually furthered his scheme. Particularly blatant in "Wedding Bells", where his plan mostly failed because he had manipulated his own ally Auntie Freeze into playing her part, when telling her the truth would probably have served just as well. When she found out he'd lied to her, she turned on him.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: While he occasionally mentions a desire for power and domination, most of his plans seem to simply involve hurting people For the Evulz.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: His obvious motif as a villain; in the movies, his mere presence tends to chill the environment around him, causing ice to build up in any place he stays.
  • Evil Is Petty: This grown man gets a bizarre amount of joy from watching kids bullying each other and regularly encourages them to play pranks and dirty tricks.
  • Gambit Roulette: One of his plans involved opening a magic shop, then hiring a kid to work there, with the anticipation that said kid would have slightly jerkish friends who'd swipe one of his inventions (an uncaring blaster) and start shooting people with it for funsies. Did it work? Yes. Could he have just blasted people his own self? ...Yes.
  • Heel–Face Brainwashing: A very temporary one in the "Runaway". Interesting to note, that it wasn't from Care Bears Stare, but from his own machine malfunction.
  • "I Am" Song: His first Villain Song, "I'm Professor Cold Heart," which is basically bragging about who he is and what he can do.
  • Kick the Dog: Perhaps moreso than any other villain in the franchise. His first appearance had him luring runaway children and then mutating them into pathetic, voiceless creatures he kept as slaves (with creepy pedophilic undertones). His second appearance had him using a device to have every child in town frozen solid (and he took some time away from that plot to kidnap the Care Bear cubs, encase them in ice, and then kick them while singing about his plot). Later appearances had him keep it up - draining abducted children of energy to power a weapon, torturing a little girl by freezing her arm...
  • Leitmotif: His plans going into action were often accompanied with the music from his "I Am" Song from the first movie.
  • Mad Scientist: Many of his inventions looked like something straight our of Dr. Seuss, but that didn't make them any less dangerous.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Perhaps more-so than any other villain in the franchise. Professor Cold Heart's plans always involved some degree of manipulation, whether aimed at the Care Bears or the children they were trying to protect.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Professor Cold Heart. He's certainly an Evil Genius, though what exactly he's a professor of is unknown.
  • My Brain Is Big: Cold Heart's oversized cranium clearly invokes his high intelligence.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Pretty much started the trend of this in the 1980s Care Bears cartoon. The very first villain the Care Bears ever face is an ice-obsessed Mad Scientist who seduces kids into coming to his castle, where he transforms them into his helpless slaves — all with disturbingly pedophile-like undertones.
  • Villain Decay: Cold Heart was legitimately terrifying in his debut appearance. In the next TV special, he's given a goofy sidekick and undertakes a standard supervillain plan to freeze the world rather than the disturbingly personal villainy from before. In the TV show, he decays further, being given a sillier, high-pitched voice and treated as more of a bumbling nuisance.
  • Villain Song: Has his own song in both of his movie appearances; "I'm Professor Cold Heart" in the first and "The Freeze Machine" in the second.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Taken to disturbing levels at times.

Cold Heart's bumbling sidekick and nephew of Auntie Freeze.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: He's got a soft spot for kids, and tends to untie them.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His part in Cold Heart's schemes frequently requires him to employ these. Of particular note is Cheating Heart Weasel, a very large Care Bear Cousin with a remarkably human face.

    Stratos Nefarious
Voiced by: Len Carlson
A villain from the DiC series, he tried to steal the stars to aid in his personal violin concert.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Funshine Bear gives him a small sun to use as light instead, and he departs happily.
  • Mad Artist: He's so focused on his playing that he's willing to steal the stars from the sky to illuminate his sheet music.

    Auntie Freeze
Voiced by: Joyce Gordon
An ice-themed villain from the DiC series, Auntie Freeze has a glare that's literally chilling. She works alongside Professor Coldheart on occasion.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She has something of a crush on Professor Coldheart, which he unwisely exploited during the episode "Wedding Bells".
  • An Ice Person: She can freeze people with icy eye beams.
  • Distaff Counterpart: She's basically a female Professor Coldheart, being a female ice-themed Care Bears villain.
  • Evil Is Petty: She spent days pretending to be a monster in a small child's closet, just for the fun of depriving her of sleep. Wow. Okay, and to set a trap for the Care Bears, but she was seriously proud of the sleep thing.
  • Invisibility: One of her powers.
  • Woman Scorned: In the episode "Wedding Bells", after learning that Professor Coldheart had faked his proposal as part of a scheme to smuggle a destructive gadget into Care-A-Lot, she is livid, freezing the Professor with her Eye Beams and, after an abortive attempt to use the gadget herself, angrily dragging him off whilst vowing to make him regret ever hearing of her name.

Voiced by: Chris Wiggins
The primary villain of the 1980s Nelvana series; a malevolent sorcerer who sought to extinguish positive feelings and to defeat the Care Bears in pursuit of this goal. He has a bumbling assistant, Beastly, and is also assisted by his niece Shreeky.
  • Bad Boss: His standard punishment for Beastly's inevitable foul-ups is blasting him with electric magic bolts.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has huge brows that are his most expressive, since he doesn't really have any other feature apart from his eyes.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He outright states that he's evil and he exists to spread evil.
  • Cartoonish Supervillainy: Lots of his plots come off as this.
  • Dystopia Justifies the Means: He just wants to snuff out love, care, hope and all other positive emotions.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Although he'd never admit it, he loves his niece Shreeky, and actually displays something quite close to caring for her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He simply can't understand what's so awesome about caring and kindness.
  • Eviler than Thou: No Heart's malice is so high that he frightens even other villains. Most notably, he teams up with the villain Dr. Fright in one episode, and the bad doctor is absolutely terrified of him all along. Especially when he inevitably fails No Heart and is carried off by him in the form of a tornado.
  • Evil Laugh: Has a very unsettling sounding one.
  • Evil Sorcerer: No Heart has magic powers, and is a threatening villain out to exterminate all positive feelings.
  • The Faceless: All we ever see of his face are his huge eyebrows and his burning red eyes.
  • The Heartless: Apparently the personification of negative feelings.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Is heavily implied to be this.
  • Kick the Dog: With Beastly; anytime they share the screen, No Heart is going to verbally or physically abuse his underling.
  • Large Ham: "I am hate! I... am EVIL! I... am NO HEART!!"
  • Made of Evil: Apparently. That damn Care-Bear Stare gets him every time.
  • Mysterious Past: The only thing we learn about him is that he's got a niece, and even that's basically a Retcon.
  • Pet the Dog: He seems to have some legitimate fatherly affection for his niece, Shreeky, going so far as letting her live with him (despite the fact that her constant screaming screws up his powers) and even praising her on occasion.
    • He also kind of does this with Beastly in "The Big Star Round-up". At the beginning of the episode, he reveals he's got a demon that he plans to sic on the Care Bears, and tells Beastly point-blank it'll be replacing him once it does so. Beastly spends the episode trying to one-up the demon and destroy the Care Bears first (it goes about as well as you'd expect it to), finally culminating in him accidentally KOing the thing. He returns home and begins to pack his things, expecting to be kicked out. Instead No Heart tells him to get rid of the demon, saying, "If anyone fails me, it's going to be you!"
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He's a terrifying villain with red eyes.
  • Shadowed Face, Glowing Eyes: His glowing red eyes are the only parts of his face that are visible, which is otherwise obscured in darkness by his purple cloak.
  • Sorcerous Overlord: A sorcerer who is an overlord to Beastly and Shreeky.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He shares several traits with both the living spell from the first film and Dark Heart from the second. Not only are all of them shapeshifters, but No Heart's colors are eerily similar to those of the spell's. Also, Dark Heart and No Heart are both magicians who want to rid the world of caring. However, while the spell is ultimately destroyed and Dark Heart does reform, No Heart never stops being evil.
  • Tantrum Throwing: He throws things around whenever he's mad.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: He picked up Professor Cold Heart's schtick as a surprisingly scary bad guy for such a kiddy setting. Even In-Universe, he absolutely terrifies everyone; even other villains, like the disturbingly vampire-like Doctor Fright, are ready to mess their pants at his presence.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: The magical crystal he wears around his neck allows him to assume almost any form he desires; mostly he takes on the form of animals, but he has become a tornado at least once.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The Power of Friendship and The Power of Love do NOT mix well with this guy. Also, he seems to have a slight pathological fear of hugs (as exemplified by his hauling ass when Beastly attempted to give him one).
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: Actually "What Is This Thing You Call Caring". He knows all too well what it is, he just hates it and everything about it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In "Bravest of the Brave", he comes this close to frying the young boy who's just saved the Bears and Cousins from the episode's death-trap...only their timely arrival puts a halt on that.

A bumbling bestial creature and No Heart's flunky. He was revamped and reappeared on his own in Welcome to Care-a-Lot and Care Bears & Cousins. For that iteration, see here.
  • Affably Evil: He's not so much a bad guy as just loyal to (and afraid of) his Evil Sorcerer boss. He's pretty sympathetic.
  • Anything but That!: In "The Wrath of Shreeky", Beastly pleads with No Heart to punish him for misusing his growth potion so he doesn't have to go with Shreeky to terrorize the Care Bears.
No Heart: Beastly, how many times have I told you–
    Shreeky: Beastlyyyyyyyy!
No Heart: (groans) I'll deal with you later.
Beastly: Oh please, deal with me now, No Heart! Pleee-eee-ase!
Shreeky: I've got a plan even you couldn't mess up. Let's go!
Beastly: (as she drags him away) NOOOOOOOO!
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: He has to constantly remind himself of this as a catchphrase.
  • Bat Out of Hell: Subverted with the 1980s incarnation; while he's an evil minion and bears a resemblance to a wingless bat creature, he's way too bumbling to be effective.
  • Breakout Villain: Chosen to be the villain for Welcome to Care-a-Lot due to his harmlessness and that, unlike the other villains, he doesn't scare the target demographic (read: toddlers).
  • Butt-Monkey: Beastly never gets a break.
  • Cartoon Creature: It's unknown what animal he's supposed to be.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: The entirety of "The Great Race".
  • Expressive Ears: At least a little bit.
  • Expy: In The Movie, Adventure in Wonderland, Dim and Dum, who play the same role as Beastly (sidekick to the Big Bad), look similar to him and have the same voice actor.
    • The same goes for the Rat King in the Nutcracker special.
  • Favouritism Flip-Flop: Happens often with Shreeky. This one from "The Wrath of Shreeky" fits perfectly.
Beastly: What are you going to do? Turn the river into raging rapids?
Shreeky: Quiet, you bubblehead! I'm trying to think... [Beat] (squeals) I know! I'll turn the river into raging rapids!
(Cue Beastly's defeated expression to the audience)
  • Friendly Enemy: On rare occasions, he and Shreeky are on peaceful terms with the Care Bears.
  • Giggling Villain: He's constantly sniggering to himself when things seem to be going his way.
  • Harmless Villain: Borderlines with Punch-Clock Villain. Beastly is a bumbling idiot who really only wants to do bad things because No Heart will painfully punish him if he doesn't. Also, because in-universe, he finds the Care Bears' friendship Sickeningly Sweet.
  • Mascot Mook: For No Heart.
  • Medium Awareness: Beastly often casts glances towards the audience, and in "Hearts at Sea", outright says "being in a cartoon is so much fun!".
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Aside from not really being that bad a guy himself, he never manages to do badness right.
  • Rule of Two
  • Villainous Friendship: Type III, with No Heart, arguably. Beastly's been known to try to cheer his boss up after particularly nasty defeats and even spent a whole episode worrying about what to get him for his birthday, whereas No Heart doesn't seem to give a damn about him one way or another.
  • Un-Evil Laugh: His "evil laugh" is a low-pitched tittering snigger.

    Shreeky

Voiced by: Terri Hawkes
A young witch and No Heart's niece, introduced in Nelvana's second season premiere. Often has to work with Beastly, but considers herself more important than him.
  • Ambiguously Human: She looks human...ish. But seeing as she's No Heart's niece, who can say what she is?
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite everything, she and Beastly do show worry towards one another.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: She has some sizeable purple Evil Eyebrows just like her uncle. It's clearly a family trait.
  • Big Sister Bully: She acts this way to Beastly.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: More like "Uncle's Little Villain". She idolizes No Heart and wants to be just like him. Meanwhile, she's the only individual he shows any sign of having something remotely approaching positivity for.
  • Enfant Terrible: She's a kid, and also one of the villains.
  • Evil Laugh: Seems to have inherited this from No Heart.
  • Friendly Enemy: On extremely rare occasions, she and Beastly are on peaceful terms with the Care Bears.
    • By "extremely rare occasions", we mean literally one episode, that being "Music Video", where she (and, to a lesser extent, Beastly) are shown to be avid fans of the Raffi-esque musician the Care Bears are fond of.
  • Glad I Thought of It: Does this to Beastly constantly.
  • Never My Fault: Whether the accident be her fault or Beastly's, she always blames him.
  • Rule of Two
  • Super-Scream: Her whole shtick. Her shriek even seems to have magical properties, as it's capable of breaking No Heart's sleep spell and messing with his shape-shifting amulet.
  • Vague Age: Her age is unknown but by the looks of her, she's probably 10 or so.

    The Spirit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d1b970f1_d3e5_48e0_b4ab_a29db808c240.jpeg
Voiced by: Jackie Burroughs
A nameless evil spirit who appears in the first film. She "befriends" a young, lonely magician's assistant named Nicholas, turning him into her pawn so she can rid the entire world of caring.
  • Ax-Crazy: It's not immediately obvious at first given her suave and subdued demeanor early on, but as the film progresses it becomes obvious she's not only an anarchistic nihilist that wants to drive the world into anarchy, but she's also an insane, emotionally manipulative sadist.
  • Big Bad: Of the first movie, being the commanding force behind Nicholas.
  • Cold Ham: While she is normally very hammy, she can also give dramatic lines with a subdued tone, which in turn makes her more threatening.
  • Dark Is Evil: While she starts off portraying herself as a golden face with green eyes- colors associated with divinity, she quickly discards it by inverting her color scheme to what she's best remembered as- a dark-green hyper-realistic face with tints to highlight her bone structure and yellow eyes. She also causes a Hate Plague, corrupts Nicholas into villainy, and summons sentient spells with frightening visages.
  • Evil Is Hammy: She starts off as suave and charismatic but gradually she indulges more and more in viciously bombastic lines as she becomes more and more successful in her plans.
  • False Friend: She pretends to befriend Nicholas, but it's an act to aid her schemes.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Downplayed as she was always evil. She starts off manifesting with a golden color scheme with emerald green eyes to make her appear more appealing to Nicholas. When Tenderheart pesters her enough, she permanently inverts her color scheme in a bout of fury- green with visible shadows and sinister yellow eyes, which shows her true evil colors, but Nicholas is both too naive and desperate for a friend to notice.
  • Large Ham: She starts off with a reserved tone but the more her plan succeeds, she begins to become more and more bombastic in her tone of voice.
  • Light Is Not Good: Initially, she manifests with a golden color scheme with green eyes while having the worst intentions in mind to be more visually comforting to Nicholas. She quickly tosses this aside when Tender-Heart manages to annoy her enough- permanently inverting her color scheme to dark green with the yellow sclera.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She persuaded Nicholas quite easily with her plans, helped by the fact he was so desperate for a friend, he'd do anything.
  • Mask of Sanity: She acts like a suave and charismatic woman early on but gradually the mask begins to slip to reveal her true personality as a nihilistic, destructive, and insane sadist.
  • Mysterious Past: Like so many other Care Bears villains, we know nothing about who she was, what horrible things she did before being stuck in a book, and who put her there. At most, Tenderheart speculates that The Spirit has some beef against Care-A-Lot and wanted to rid Earth of all caring specifically to destroy the former.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: She's drawn in sharp angles with tints to highlight her bone structure- leading to a hyper-realistic face that contrasts the softer characters and the cutesy environment.
  • Obviously Evil: She initially tries to downplay it in spite of being attached to an ominous-looking spellbook by appearing as a golden face with emerald eyes. When Tender-Heart pesters her enough, she inverts her color scheme into the one she portrays for the rest of the film- a green hyper-realistic face with yellow eyes- which plays this straight. Nicholas is too desperate and lonely for a friend to truly comprehend this even when she causes a Hate Plague or summoning sentient spells.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: While the lack of caring causes the destruction of Care-A-Lot is her suggested goal, it's heavily implied that beyond the lack of caring, is that she wants the world to devolve into anarchistic chaos and nihilism that will lead to humanity's self-destruction.
  • Satanic Archetype: A initially golden entity that tempts a youth with false promises while truly leading him to cause the world to tear itself apart, while attempting to take down a cutesy paradise populated with entities that lead people on the right path, and is portrayed with dark color schemes as well as manifests powers in either corruptive in nature or truly unnatural manners. While lacking the usual features associated with the character, the Spirit's goal is essentially taking down the heavens while corrupting humanity into committing sin and violence against one another.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She can't affect the world directly as she's locked in a book and needs Nicholas as a medium to cast her spells. She's then sealed away again.
  • The Sociopath: She gives a façade of concern and guidance towards Nicholas to manipulate but truly does not care for him beyond a vessel to cast her spells as she cannot do it herself. Her desire to cause anarchy is implied out of personal sadistic amusement in addition to petty revenge. And she gets angry whenever things don't go her way.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She initially starts off as this, giving a calm and suave tone to persuade Nicholas while having an enjoyment of the suffering of others. This gradually is downplayed as she engages in more bombastic behavior as she revels in her victory.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: She makes Nicholas go completely crazy and power-mad, and comes within two people in the entire world of destroying Care-a-Lot forever. And unlike the other villains, she's never played for laughs- being an implied anarchist nihilist that wants the world to devolve into chaos with her threatening spells, which contrasts with the cutesy world of the Carebears.
  • Voice of the Legion: She does this twice. When giving the command to the first sentient spell and when further coaxing Nicholas into continuing the plan.

    Nicholas
Voiced by: Hadley Kay (young), Mickey Rooney (adult)
The assistant to the stage magician Mr. Fetuccini. Nicholas never had a friend in his life, which makes him easy prey for the Spirit when she convinces him to wreak revenge on the town that spurned him—and eventually, the entire world.
  • Anti-Villain: While he does gradually become violent and insane, he only does so due to implied brainwashing and to support his first "supportive" ally in the Spirit after years of abuse. Once he's made to see the errors of his ways, he immediately turns back to good.
  • Ax-Crazy: Gradually becomes this under the Spirit's influence, going from reluctantly serving her to enthusiastically gathering ingredients with violent intent to the point he gives an iconic Nightmare Face to showcase his insanity before he goes back to normal.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: As he falls more into the sway of the Spirit, he develops these.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Ultimately, Kim and Jason's kindness gets through to him, and he helps defeat the Spirit.
  • Held Gaze: He has one with Kim after he reforms what some fans interpret as a Ship Tease.
  • More than Mind Control: A big part of how the Spirit is able to keep a hold over him in spite of his growing concerns, is due to the feelings of needing anyone as a friend- thus fearing going back to being alone if she abandons him and the resentment of being mistreated his entire life- leading him to engaging in her plan. Once Jason and Kim make it clear they can care for him and that the Spirit is only using him, he manages to seal away the Spirit again.
  • Narrator All Along: He turns out to be Mr. Cherrywood, the story's narrator.
  • Nightmare Face: Gives an iconic warped angry face with interchanging white and black circles within enlarged eyes right out of nowhere just before Kim and Jason reform him.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: By the climax, he's gone completely mad and attacks Kim, Jason, and the others with the intent to harm or kill. It's also reflected on his appearance, which starts off as having bags under his eyes before having his hair stand up and leading to his infamous Nightmare Face.

    Dark Heart
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dark_heart.jpg
Voiced by: Hadley Kay
An evil spirit and chief antagonist of the second 1980s movie; he seeks to capture and destroy the Care Bears and Care Bear Cousins so that he can then poison the rest of the world with his evil influence. Taking a human girl named Christy under his wing, he eventually forges a connection with her that surprises him. To the point of turning to the Care Bears Family to save her after he accidentally endangers her, and willingly becoming a human boy to stay with her.
  • Affably Evil: Though with a bit of a Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: He turns into a human boy to interact with Christy.
  • Become a Real Boy: Unintentionally, though he's happy when it happens after he turns good.
  • Big Bad: The main antagonist, although he has a Heel–Face Turn at the end.
  • Butt-Monkey: Briefly so during the sequence where he shows up at Care-a-Lot pretending to be the "caring meter reader." The Star and Heart Buddies delay his efforts to catch the Bears and Cousins, and Hilarity Ensues and ends with him in a messy heap outside the dining hall. This status eventually stops, though, the moment the Bears and Cousins suggest giving him a hug to cheer him up.
  • Casting a Shadow: He makes an actual shadow form of himself for True Heart and Noble Heart to chase.
  • Curtains Match the Window: His hair and eyes are both a deep dark red.
  • Eldritch Abomination: A shapeshifting being whose presence spreads a Hate Plague, who can bestow gifts upon his followers and whose natural form appears to be a massive cloud of some sort.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He has one. Christy, the girl who makes a deal with him. After she saves his life, he starts to care about her. To the point that he refuses to harm her during the final fight, asking her to run and save her life and pushing her out of the way. When he realizes he accidentally wounded her with his lightning, he immediately stops fighting and makes a truce with the Care Bears to save her.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Dark Heart is flabbergasted that Christy would save his life, noting that it would have been smarter for her to let him drown.
  • Evil Redhead: Has red hair and is the Big Bad. Pre-redemption, at least.
  • Good Hurts Evil: Positive feelings seem to make him at least physically uncomfortable.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Has one at the end after realizing how much he truly cares about Christy.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: When he becomes an actual human boy after his Heel–Face Turn, he is granted with blue eyes.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Hiccups induce this.
  • Kick the Dog: Intimidates Christy by using his powers to lift the former Camp Champ and dump him in a garbage can.
  • Large Ham: He's very flamboyant and seems to be channeling the spirit of Christopher Walken during some of his lines.
    • "One day the world will be rid of GOODNESS and KIIINDNEEEESS!"
    • "Time for a game of disappearing bears..."
  • Love Redeems: Or Caring Redeems. Dark Heart becomes Christy's friend (after she saves his life), and he feels so bad about nearly killing her that it drives the evil out of him.
  • Mind over Matter: Another one of his myriad powers.
  • Morphic Resonance: All of his forms have a red and gray color pattern.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After seeing that he accidentally zapped Christy. He even outright asks, "What have I done?"
  • Mysterious Past: What he is, where he comes from, and what his history was before we see him trying to sink the future Care Bears' ship are never revealed to the audience.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His voice and his speech patterns can remind one of Christopher Walken.
  • Not So Invincible After All: Well, he almost drowns by hitting his head, passing out, and falling out of a canoe in human form.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Dark Heart turns himself into a 12 year old boy for most of the movie, but is not a real child until the end of the movie.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Though at the end of the movie, his eyes turn blue, because he's turned into a normal kid.
  • Ship Tease: With Christy after his Heel–Face Turn, what with all the hand-holding and such or his happy little dance with her when he finds out that he became human.
  • Shoo the Dog: Just before his battle with the Bears, he tries to get Christy to leave for her safety.
  • Super-Empowering: He gives Christy above-normal physical abilities.
  • Super Smoke: What's implied to be his true form is a large red cloud with glowing red eyes.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Dark Heart is introduced chasing down a ship full of babies with the intention of killing them all, and seeks to destroy the very concept of caring.
  • Voice of the Legion: Every once in a while, generally when he uses his powers.
  • Walking Wasteland: His extended presence seems to induce evil behavior in children and animals, at least.

    Christy
An arrogant, ambitious young girl who has the misfortune of being stuck at a summer camp she hates. She eagerly accepts Dark Heart's offer to become his helper in exchange for him using his magic to give her whatever she wishes for.
  • Anti-Villain: She's a girl who was treated like dirt for not being good at sports by the other kids and forced to do all the chores for them. When Dark Heart offered her to grant her wish to become better in exchange of her helping him to do somethingnote , she agreed. She later agrees to help his kidnapping of the Care Bears because she fears he would take back what he gave to her (and probably because she fears his magical powers in general; she did see him change form and throw a kid in a trash can with his powers). During the climax, she does the right thing and helps the Care Bears though.
  • Badass Normal: After Dark Heart empowers her, she can beat any other camper at sports and other camp-related activities. It's unclear just how powerful and skilled he made her.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Has brown hair and eyes. She looks a lot like Chris from The Brave Little Toaster.
  • Deal with the Devil: How she and Dark Heart become linked; she promises her allegiance, he grants her wishes.
  • The Dragon: For Dark Heart, as she's his accomplice in his Evil Plan.
  • Driven by Envy: Her actions are mainly motivated by jealousy for anyone with a better life than her.
  • Freudian Excuse: She was treated like dirt by the other campers and forced to do the chores for them because she wasn't good at sports, which fueled her resentment. When Dark Heart offers her to grant her wish of being the best, she jumps at the opportunity.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After receiving a You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech from her friends Dawn and John, she decides to do the right thing and to help rescue the Care Bears from Dark Heart.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: After becoming the "camp champ", she becomes incredibly boastful and behaves like the bully who was harassing her earlier. However, it's to mask her own insecurities. She's afraid to become a "nobody" and a loser again if Dark Heart removes the magic that turned her into "camp champ".
  • Morality Pet: For Dark Heart. After she saves his life, he starts to care about her. To the point that he refuses to harm her during the final fight even after she joins forces with the Care Bears, asking her to run and save her life and pushing her out of the way. When he realizes he accidentally wounded her with his lightning, he immediately stops fighting and makes a truce with the Care Bears to save her.
  • Pet the Dog: Even after becoming the new "camp champ", she's still kind to Dawn and John and doesn't involve them in her bidding with the rest of the campers.
  • Ship Tease: With Dark Heart after his Heel–Face Turn, what with all the hand-holding and such or his happy little dance with her when he finds out that he became human.
  • Smug Super: After Dark Heart empowers her, she rubs the fact that she can outperform every other camper in their faces, even those of her friends.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: After Dark Heart turns her into the "camp champ", and now that the roles are reversed, she becomes just as mean as the bully who was tormenting her before.
  • Villainous Friendship: Type I with Dark Heart.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Averted. She saves Dark Heart's life because she still regards him as a person, no matter what he may be.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: After Dark Heart's magic grants her wish of becoming better at sports, she wastes no time in getting her revenge on The Bully who was harassing her before and humiliates him. Although it's ultimately deconstructed, as it also shows that she became just as bad as he was.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Receives this kind of speech from her friends John and Dawn. It manages to convince her that doing the right thing is more important than being the "camp champ".
