This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

This is a long post to respond to everyone on page 1246. If you posted on page 1246 or earlier and have not yet been responded to on this page or the previous page, please reappeal. Otherwise, do not repeat your posts unnecessarily. It really does not help either you or the moderators trying to track your responses.

~El Juaco Appeal

What? "Actor plays two characters in tangentially related properties" has never been an auto-qualification for Alternate Self without further confirmation. Anyone trying to claim Johnny Storm/Steve Rogers would have been in the wrong. Not to mention the example you readded was unambiguously an example of "is this" Zero-Context Example so even if Marvel had unambiguously confirmed it, it would still not have enough context.

Regardless, the suspension is not about the precise multiversality of the Marvel properties. It is about (a) the ZCE of it all and (b) the edit war of it all. We are expecting you to address those two concerns, not discuss Marvel lore:

Also, this is the second time you have been suspended for edit warring. Why didn't you do any of the things you mentioned on this post instead of edit warring?

~Kof Boy Appeal

You were not suspended for either of those reasons (although you should not snipe in the video moderation thread either). You actually committed an Edit War (kindly read that page) on XMeetsY.Animated Films by twice deleting film "ingredients" that you did not think applied.

On this website, we don't like folks repeating their edit without consensus or agreement from other users. Again, read Edit War if you haven't — where on this website does that page say you can obtain consensus?

~Bing Chilling -Appeal and Appeal

First, we don't handle suspensions over private message. The idea is that no moderator who composes a response to you needs to look elsewhere besides this thread.

Next, you are correct that your suspension is for the rogue launch of Commended for Pushback. This is bad for two main reasons: (1) it's rude to the active sponsor if there is one (2) it doesn't guarantee that the page is actually wiki-ready, and you could be putting a subpar trope page out there.

Please read TLP Guidelines thoroughly and tell us in your own words:

  • What are the requirements for launch?
  • What if you see a trope page that you are not sponsoring, but you think should be launched?

~Tropers/JLKL Appeal

Yep, remember that you need to get consensus prior to redoing your edit. Your suspension is released.

~Rich Mountain 112 Appeal & Appeal As previously stated, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has no place here. If you want a site that supports "anti wokeness" and "family tradition", you will have to look elsewhere. Your suspension has been upgraded to a bounce.
~Tropers/Comun Appeal Correct, the third edit/your first "redo" is the threshold for an Edit War. You can't do that without agreement from other users. Where does Edit War say you can get consensus for a contested edit?
~Tropers/darknessRising Appeal

Since you last asked this question a few months ago you've posted more in the media forums, but not much else.

That is closer to what we are seeking, but doesn't otherwise scream 'productive editor'. Remember that you were suspended for: two edit wars, plagiarism, and bad grammar/complaining. That is a big hill to overcome. You can try helping with the workshop forums (TRS/IP), cleanup threads, policy discussions, or replying in Ask The Tropers, which would indicate to us that you are willing to collaborate with other tropers through the proper channels. And if you are trying to convince us that you're going to edit well if you give you your privileges back, formatting TLP comments properly would go some way towards that.

Finally, the next time you reappeal please include in your appeal reasons why we should consider it.

~Tropers/Bean 170 Appeal & Appeal

In the future, please keep your replies concise. It takes longer for us to compose replies to walls of text, and edit appeals almost never require walls of text.

That said, your suspension is because your four grammar notifiers show that your grammar is not good enough to be trusted with editing. You can do what you need to improve this on your own, and to lift the suspension, you will have to post some prospective edits in this thread. If the volunteers that proofread posts in that thread deem a few consecutive posts of yours to be free of any glaring grammar errors, then we will discuss lifting your suspension.

~Tropers/Lalapolpolpol Appeal

Your suspension is not for doing something different, it's because you were doing something wrong for some time despite warnings — specifically, you have three notifiers for Example Indentation but made this addition — which is why you were called in to so we could clarify the rules with you.

It has since been fixed. But can you explain what you did wrong per our Example Indentation page?

~Sutairu Masuta Appeal

Checking the edit history is always good practice. The problem is more specifically that with your readdition you committed an Edit War. While in this case you have explained that you didn't see the deletion reason, we want to be sure that you know how to handle deletions/changes to your edits that you disagree with going forward (we will assume you will have checked the edit reason — that excuse won't work a second time).

You cannot redo your edit without agreement/consensus. Where does Edit War say you can discuss these?

~Alantis 536 Appeal

First pertinent policy page: Edit War (read it if you haven't, please). You tried to have this theory on YMMV.Miraculous Ladybug S 05 E 24 Representation listed as Ass Pull even though other tropers don't agree with you. You then tried to put it under Throw It In! even though this is misplaced.

Second pertinent policy page: Single-Issue Wonk. You keep putting Ass Pull and other complaining tropes in reference to this theory everywhere (trivia page, main trope page) even though these are also misplaced.

That tells us that you desperately want this opinion on the pages whether or not the edits fit the rules.

So, two points:

  • You are correct that you could have hashed it out with a disagreeing troper over PM. However, PM discussions should have taken place before your first re-addition, and if you are unable to come to an agreement, you should involve other users (e.g. Ask The Tropers, forums) instead of going ahead with your edits.
  • If you are about to embark on a spree of edits about how much you really didn't like something, take a second to consider if these edits actually fit/will benefit the wiki. Remember, we try to minimize complaining and non-neutral edits.

Is anything here unclear?

~Gate Star X Appeal

To recap, last time you asked this had some issues. Since then you haven't branched into the workshops/TLP though you have consistently posted well in the comic cleanups without invoking mental health, and expressed interest in policy with the spoiler, character page, and disambiguation discussions.

We are willing to offer you one more chance at editing. However, if you are suspended again from the wiki for any reason (not just for the unilateral moves issue) that will net you a permanent suspension — i.e. no chance of appealing it again. Are those grounds clear?

~Tropers/Echidna Appeal

First, as I said in another reply, please keep your replies concise. 99.99% of edit appeals do not require four long paragraphs.

Second, you may not have intended to come off as self-flagellating, but we don't really consider intent as much as we consider what tropers actually put out. There are very few other ways to read posts like this.

And two I just don’t know what to say and feel a bit stressed out which is making me believe no one even listens to me and reasonings at this point.

Such posts also stop temporarily divert the thread from being a cleanup thread into trying to comfort you.

You slid back into this very shortly after you were released after a forced monthlong break. Whatever your private attitudes are towards CM/MB they are not productive for either you or the thread. In addition, your posting history is almost exclusively tied to CM/MB.

With all that in mind, we think it would be best for you to be indefinitely banned from the Long Term Projects subforum. We would like to see you branch out into other aspects of the site to (1) gain exposure regarding how other groups communicate on here and (2) not have your emotional state re: posting so strongly tied to these cleanup threads.

We want to see a lengthy non-CM/MB editing/posting record before reappealing again. But if the previous negativity bleeds into other forum threads, we may escalate it to a full posting ban (or more). Are those grounds clear?

~Demongodofchaos 2 Appeal

While it is good that you tried to cut down on complaining, our Edit War rules actually say that you should not have deleted it twice without the discussion page (or another venue) resolving the issue.

You've been suspended for edit warring twice before, in 2014 and in 2016, in addition to one other wiki suspension and forum suspension. That makes this wiki suspension 4, which would mean you would not get the editing back right now in any case. However, it has also been long enough from these that we are willing to offer you an indefinite suspension. This means building up a record of goodwill elsewhere on the site, and reappealing in the far future after you think you have contributed plenty. Is that clear?

~Tropers/Ymirsdaughter Appeal

You are free to want to remain suspended, so you do not have to reply to this post. But your suspension's tipping point was that you committed an Edit War by readding information that others have deleted. There are proper channels to modifying a trope's name or description, but redoing your edit without consensus is not allowed.

~Tropers/Green_Lanturn40 Appeal

Your suspension is an "a little bit of column A, a little bit of column B" type of case.

You technically committed an Edit War by readding something you initially wrote. Given the seven year time difference between these edits, we would normally let this slide, but:

Given your quick reversal of the edit it was obvious that you felt strongly that this should remain on the page, even though it was...neither the best example nor method. So we decided to issue a suspension to clarify with you how such disputes should be handled. If you disagree with the removal/change to one of your edits, what does Edit War say you should have done?

~Tropers/wanderlustwarrior appeal

Snark/sarcasm by itself is fine. Snark/sarcasm towards another user is not acceptable and is often grounds for a personal thump.

Thumps are considered warnings. You are always welcome to clarify a thump to a moderator afterward to get a stronger hold on the rules, but if you are thumped, repeat the same behavior, and then are thumped/suspended for it you shouldn't be surprised. On the other hand, if someone is breaking the rules with their posts, it is often better to holler them and let the mods handle it rather than engage and risk thumps yourself.

Your suspension is released. We hope that you will conduct yourself properly in the forums going forward.

Again, do not multipost unnecessarily. We will respond to everyone eventually.

The Edit War page says I can discuss this on the relevant discussion page, in a PM to the Troper, on ATT, or in the forums. I apologize, I will pay more attention to the policies going forward.

Also, I wasn't aware Replacement Scrappy was NRLEP. Again, I should've paid attention and I apologize.

I understand what you are saying, and I can reassure you this will never happen in the other forums to show that it is completely gone if you ask me. I have no idea how long it would be but I can assure you it wouldn't even appear on other forums. I have no idea where to start when looking around such as Forum Games or other threats honestly. But still, I apologize entirely for this of course until I get released from there. Don't misunderstand or anything I was not comforting for others as it was not something I had if anything, and I'm not the type to lie even from there but there is no pattern from there if anything even if it doesn't look much. I apologize if it's much for you.

Hi Synchronicity. Thanks for your reply. As why I didn't do what I said I would do previously, I admit I was in the wrong there, but the day in which that happened, I was kinda busy and I thought that the Alternate Self trope worked the way I thought and that the user removing it was wrong, so I opted to revert that edit under the impression that user would research and learn that I was right in the trope's use. I was unaware of how that trope actually worked and let myself use methods of users who did it wrong but whom I wasn't aware that their edits had been reverted given my absence from those pages.

Hi, first time being suspended (for editing), which came as a surprise... then I checked my messages. Which included a couple of mentions for editing mistakes that I'd missed? I assume it was that, but there were only three in the last couple of months.

I'm still a little surprised, but less so. Since I don't take part in the forums, I think it's for those editing mistakes? Or is it something else? (In which case, please inform me, so I can apologise accurately and avoid in the future). I'm sorry I slipped up and didn't correct them, I missed the messages. Though in the case of the listing of Shout-Out on the YMMV page of Sansûkh, I genuinely wasn't sure where to put it, since it didn't seem right to stick on a main page. In hindsight, I should probably have created a Trivia page for it.

Still. I would like to apologise, and inquire after the length of my suspension.

Thanks.

Discussion pages and ATT.

That said, this situation only happened because I've been only ever reading rules pages whenever they came up in conversation and otherwise relying on my common sense. Are there any other essential rule pages you recommend I should be reading to avoid similar problems in the future?

For the first question:

  • The draft must have a clear and concise Laconic description.
  • The draft must be over three days old.
  • The draft must have at least five more hats than bombs.
  • The draft must have at least 10 examples and 12 wicks (links that refer to other tropes).
  • Discussion on the draft must be complete, meaning that the owner has to respond to every question, criticism, and suggestion.
  • The owner must state their intention to launch at least 24 hours before launching.
  • The owner of the draft must make no changes to their draft for at least 24 hours before launching.

For the second question:

  • I should make sure the trope is Up For Grabs, the requirements for which are that the thread has been abandoned for at least two months or that the author explicitly states that they are putting the draft Up For Grabs.

I would like to give thanks to Synchronicity for responding to my appeal.

Regarding the terms, I understand. My mental health shouldn’t be an issue going forward. Next time I feel that something is bothering me I’ll either take it to the kids or step back from the site. Other than that I do t really have any other issues that would get me suspended. My grammar is good and I am pretty respectful to fellow tropers.

My only concern is that I will get suspended again over a unilateral move/decision again. What exactly constitutes a unilateral move? If the guidelines are set out specifically I’ll follow them, but it’s hard when they aren’t even written down and I don’t fully understand them. Is it just moving any character anywhere? Is it only for big franchises? If I move a character from say Daredevil to Spider-Man will that be considered a unilateral move? Or if I’m on The Bear (2022) and reorganize the characters page? How would I do that? Do I need to check in with anyone? What exactly are the rules? If I am under strict rules and any minor mistake I make could get me permanently suspended then I would like everything above board.

Edit: I have an actual example now. I was just reading through The Camp Half-Blood Series, and with the release of the new book the Character Will Solace is now a Main Character. He is currently listed underneath The Camp Half-Blood Series: Camp Half-Blood but should be moved to The Camp Half-Blood Series: Main Characters. If I move him would that be considered a unilateral move? There is no dedicated forum for the series as far as I know unlike the MCU. What is the procedure for this? Do I need to go to the Character Page Cleanup forum and get approved first?

@Synchronicity. Thank you for responding. To answer your question:

  • We can use the article's discussion page to have a talk with other tropers about the reasons for the edit.
  • We can DM another troper and have a discussion there.
  • Using Ask The Tropers is possible, but not as good as Discussion pages or DMs.
  • Using the forums, such as Trope Talk (for trope disagreements) or Wiki Talk (for other articles). Again, using Discussion pages or DMs is preferable.

This batch responds to posts from the previous page (1247). If your most recent post to us is on this page, please do not post again. These responses are composed based on post order.

~Proffesor Pablo Strawberry appeal

You were suspended for committing an Edit War on that page. I have excerpted the policy page and linked to your edits that violated the rule:

If person A adds/deletes something, person B removes/restores it, and A changes it back, A is edit warring

In this case, the entry was considered to be Natter (i.e. unnecessary commentary) and probably should not have been re-added. But we would like you to understand our Edit War rules. The next time someone changes/deletes your edit and you think they were wrong to do so, what should you do?

~Tropers/zahin4us appeal

Ooookay, it seems we need to set some ground rules. You were only able to answer the Edit War question we posed here after multiple attempts from us to get you to read the page in this thread to the point of threatening a permanent suspension, reading the Wikipedia rule page for some reason, someone else PM'ing you the answers, and you attempting to get them through the contact form. This is not at all how appeals work. We are expecting you to do the proper and correct work yourself, else how can we trust you on the wiki?

We still have multiple other rules to discuss with you (without getting into your additional grammar requirement):

In the meantime, we can discuss the other problems like Natter and Edit War (as well as some other policies like serial tweaking and the proper use of WMG...but let's start with those two pages). Which one do you want to talk about first?

This will involve discussions of multiple other Administrivia pages. We are not willing to go through all of that again just to get you to answer simple questions. If we sense that you are not reading those pages to answer the questions we pose, we will permanently end your appeal — for real this time. Is that clear?

~JHD 0919 appeal

That you find the pain of a suspension agonizing is not exactly convincing us that you understand the problem. Ideally, you shouldn't need a the threat of a suspension hanging over your head to understand that you're on the wrong path and drop it. Will you stop being impatient and trying to rush decisions in the project forums?

~Tropers/futuremoviewriter appeal

Last time you were suspended for offtopic posting, you acknowledged that a repeat of this would probably mean a more severe punishment.

We do however acknowledge that 9 offtopic thumps over dozens of pages of posting history since 2019 is not the worst record. Because of this, we're offering you an indefinite ban from the Long-Term Projects subforum. We would like to see you build up a long posting record in other parts of the forum (such as the Live-Action Film one, where you could have taken your offtopic comments about movies) with no thumps. That would indicate to us that you're capable of staying on topic. Does that sound fair?

~Tropers/deltanine appeal

Please remember all the issues that got you suspended while editing in the future. Your suspension is lifted.

~Tropers/Hawkatana appeal

You readded an example of Tainted by the Preview that was removed for being misuse to Overshadowed by Controversy, which it was too recent for.

We would not consider "move to a better fitting trope" an Edit War...if the new trope were actually better fitting. We took into account that neither of the tropes you added were appropriate (it's not actually a preview, and we don't know if the show will be overshadowed by that in the long run). So to us, it reads that you really wanted to document the negativity about the opening whether or not it actually fit the YMMV items.

Two things now:

  • To avoid an Edit War charge for uncertain items, it's always good to double-check with other tropers if your proposed readdition or move is a good idea.
  • You need to make sure that your examples fit the tropes you're adding them to.

~Tropers/starklinson appeal

All right. While in this case checking the edit history would probably have kept you from re-adding Up To Eleven, we still need to be sure that you understand Edit War rules going forward. We will not believe "I didn't check the edit history" excuse twice. So please read Edit War and tell us a couple of places where you can discuss edits that tropers disagree on next time.

~Ex Machina appeal

Your suspension is because you've made (1) an alarming number of stub work pages (2) with some having plagiarized descriptions. You've received Notifiers for both of these issues but it's still a problem.

We will discuss the latter first. All writing on TVT must be original or at least paraphrased, and we consider plagiarism both a legal and ethical concern. If you are caught copypasting text from other pages again, your editing suspension will be permanent. Is that clear?

~Doujinguy 567 appeal

Well, the conversation at hand is more about the unexplained bombs. They're not for drafts you don't like, but for drafts that you think should not be launched despite hats — there's a distinction between the two. To ensure that you're tossing bombs in good faith, we would like you to be transparent with bombing reasons from now on. You can do this by commenting your reasons for bombing and pointing to applicable TLP Guidelines. But if this behavior keeps up, you risk at least a permanent ban.

~Tropers/Ultimatum appeal

Yes, you have plenty of thumps, notably around two dozen in the last three or so years. These more recent thumps are a mix of off topic, personal, rules, and 'general' thumps. Is there any reason you are having trouble following our forum rules?

~The Lewandererz 602555 appeal

First order of business: please try to keep your appeals concise... second, let's tackle the complaining first.

While we don't entertain tropers who are solely here to bash things, we are not trying to stop anybody from expressing negative opinions per se. There's a happy medium: criticism needs to be expressed properly and in the right place. If you hated the game, others' reviews are not the place to drop nonsequitur comments about it. You can maybe write your own review, or discuss it in the forums, or if it's particularly widespread opinion among the fandom, document it on the YMMV page. But like we said, there's a happy medium and lines that don't need to be crossed. If you have nothing to say about it except negativity, it's not conducive to good troping on the wiki or good conversations in the fora. And calling the creator a villain is always unwarranted. The policy page here is Complaining About Shows You Don't Like.

Does that make sense?

~MBG 159 appeal

By itself, the edit knowingly flunking No Recent Examples, Please! is not a great mark of editing character, but not suspension-worthy. The problem is that because you initially added the example, it's now also an Edit War (and would not have been one if you'd simply waited out the month).

Note that you were previously suspended for edit warring on your previous account.

So now the issue is twofold:

  • Edit warring
  • Knowingly breaking the rules

What do you have to say about it?

> Yes, you have plenty of thumps, notably around two dozen in the last three or so years. These more recent thumps are a mix of off topic, personal, rules, and 'general' thumps. Is there any reason you are having trouble following our forum rules?

Its a bad habit that's crept in recently and made me careless,I promise to be more aware of the rules from now on

It's more than fair. I'm sorry that I couldn't avoid thumping altogether in the last few years as is and wish I could've shown that the improvement had gone even further than it did. I will definitely utilize the Live Action Films and the like forums as a means of being able to better focus thoughts and just opened a tab in my phone's Safari to that link you provided to be able to fully access it whenever I think the occasion calls for it and I'll make it a point to stay civil while doing so too of course—even though that's probably something I've never had a problem with over the years.

Again, thank you. It's appreciated and however long you think I gotta sit out the Long-Term Projects is also totally acceptable too.

I wanted to leave a message on my CM and MB Pending page about being indefinitely suspended from Long-Term Projects and how everything I got on there is up for grabs. Am I allowed to do that? If not, I'll leave it be then.

I also have three Pending MB writeups—candidates that each got an EP from me and were approved—and one was a collab. Do I give those to someone else to post or hold on to them until the suspension is over?

I also have a candidate that I started working on, but while I shared the name with a couple other Tropers, I didn't post anything about the candidate in question at all (not even on my Pending) and I'm willing to either sit on that indefinitely or hand it to someone else as well—it's again, entirely up to you guys.
