    Original post
The description of Gold Tooth talks about all the different meanings gold teeth can have without focusing on one specific meaning making it too broad and vague which is why, along with its chairs-y name, it has a high amount of ZCEs and the examples follow each different meaning of the one mentioned in the description.

The wick findings show that:

  • 5/50 or 10% are "gold tooth signifying villainy/evil/amorality" examples.
  • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying wealth/status" examples.
  • 3/50 or 6% are "gold tooth signifying both wealth/greed + villainy" examples.
  • 34/50 or 68% are zero-context/chairs (unremarkable) examples and contextless potholes.
  • 5/50 or 10% are other unsorted examples of other varied meanings.

  • Final Verdict: The majority of the wicks are ZCEs and stray potholes which isn't surprising since the trope has a non-specific/broad name. After that, there are very few examples of the meanings gold teeth have, with villainous symbolism being in the lead with 5 examples, while the gold tooth = wealth/status and gold tooth = wealth and villainy at the same time have 3 examples each (so 6 in total). The remaining 5 wicks are unsorted examples with different meanings/contexts not fitting the previous categories and don't form a pattern of their own. This makes the trope chairs as currently written and an action needs to be taken to fix this.
  • Solutions:
    • Retool + rename the trope into Symbolic Gold Tooth to make it clear that it requires a meaning/symbolism, and make it cover either/both villainy or wealth. We have 7 examples of this excluding indexes.
    • Or send the "gold tooth = villainy/evil/gangster image" (has 5 wicks only) and "gold tooth = wealth/status" (has 3 wicks) concepts back to TLP to gather more examples and cut the trope.

Wick check:

As brought up here, Gold Tooth' description lists all the different meanings gold teeth have, making it unclear what usage it exactly is troping/describing. So, I'll check the usage of the trope and see if it has ZCEs due to its broad name or not.

Wicks checked: 50/50.

  • Quick wick check results:

I'm not sure how Symbolic Gold Tooth would work TBH. What would it be symbolizing? Or would it just be "any time a gold tooth is used to symbolize something"?

I honestly would prefer splitting into specific tropes about things that gold teeth symbolize and sending them to the TLP/Salvage Yard, aka option 2.

[up]agree.

though, I know that there's someone who's considering making a general "gold is used to communicate wealth" trope as a rework for their "rich people are blond" trope idea (mostly because I rec'd the switch[1]). So, the gold teeth = wealth idea might work better as part of that larger concept.

gold teeth = shady, untrustworthy, villainous, greedy can be yarded.

I'm not confident there are enough examples to easily remake it into "Gold Tooth Of Wealth And Shadiness", so if nobody volunteers yard it.

^ Yes, that's what the above tropers are saying. To yard the meaningful concepts or take them to TLP if someone is willing to sponsor them. The examples are obviously not enough, or else I'd have just proposed retooling the trope to whichever has the most examples, but neither has a sufficient number of examples.

I think the gold tooth symbolizing both greed and villainy are similar enough concepts to not require large changes; the main problem is the sheer quantity of meaningless ZCEs, being more than half of all examples. Renaming could at least make it more clear the trope isn't about solely about appearance. Maybe Greedy Gold Tooth?

I agree with cutting and Yarding.

Edit: I suppose redirecting to The Gilded Index or Teeth Tropes could be an alternative to cutting.

Note that the "7 examples" in the OP is the amount in the usage check; extrapolated out to the full 303 references, we'd expect closer to 42 valid examples. Finding them is another matter, of course.

Looking at the page itself, it seems like the most common gold tooth + trait example is villains with gold teeth. Besides that, two things that didn't come up are teeth with words carved into them and fake teeth made out of other decorative items.

So, maybe we could have Villanous Gold Tooth and Status Symbol Tooth.

Status Symbol Tooth a is good name because sometimes it's parodied to not be limited to gold.

We need to find the examples from the other wicks that weren't checked though.

Tabs Since: Jan, 2001
#16: May 20th 2023 at 11:51:54 PM

I see 8/50 (extrapolate to 48-ish total) "evil gold tooth" examples; 6/50 (extrapolate to 36-ish total) "wealthy gold tooth" examples

  • If the vote is to yard, all fitting examples would need to be identified and collected for the yard.

  • If the vote is to retool in TRS, all fitting examples would need to be identified and collected for this thread.

Either way, the participants here would be finding examples from the wicks that weren't checked. There's no difference in that step.

I suppose the crowner option(s) could say we'd sandbox examples for those splits, and that any that have enough examples to count as thriving would be made right away, and any that don't have enough examples be Yarded or sent to TLP to gather more examples if it turns out that they don't have enough examples. This would include the possibility that one could be made right away and the other would have to be Yarded (in addition to the possibility of either both being able to be made right away or both needing to be Yarded).

How can I test if a new trope is workable for "evil gold tooth" and "wealthy gold tooth" examples? I tried searching for - "gold tooth" and "evil" - and - "gold tooth" and "wealthy" -, but nothing useful came up that shows more examples than the ones in the wick check.

I think it might need a trip to TLP/yarding either way.

Well, that's how you test. If there aren't enough good examples right away to the yard it goes.

Hooked a crowner to decide whether to split. If at least one is chosen (the two options are not mutually exclusive), Gold Tooth will be cut, redirected, or disambiguated.

Calling in favor of cutting Gold Tooth and splitting off gold teeth signifying villainy/evil/amorality and gold teeth signifying wealth/status. Go ahead get sandboxes ready to see whether there are enough wicks to handle the split without TLP.

Edit: Made Sandbox.Gold Tooth Split to copy examples to.

Added a bunch of examples to the sandbox. Edited and stuff for the sake of making them fit. Ones that worked for both I listed under wealth to fluff up the count there.

I think we have 30 villainy/amorality gold tooth examples which are enough to be split off into a trope, no?

Any ideas for names, since we need to decide on a name since we're doing the split right away? Villainous Gold Tooth, Gold Tooth Of Villainy, Gold Tooth Of Evil, Amoral Gold Tooth, or Gold Tooth Of Amorality might work.

Edit: Oh, right, I unstarred the thread since we have at least one crowner to do per what I mentioned above (there will be another one if the trope for gold teeth symbolizing wealth is ready to be split off right away).

Edit: I see that Gold Tooth has a god dedicated to it on the Pantheon, but I'm going to wait to see how the split goes before asking the Pantheon thread to handle it, in case one of the two splits could replace it instead of the entry needing to be removed entirely.

It was decided to cut Gold Tooth is being cut and split off gold teeth signifying villainy/evil/amorality and gold teeth signifying wealth/status. What should the trope for gold teeth signifying wealth and status be called?
