Not Tropeworthy: Turtle Power

Go To

To-do list:

    Original post
Per the laconic of Turtle Power, the trope is "Turtles are awesome." Which is to say, it's not a trope. However, I performed a wick check to determine what reasons this trope was being used for. For 50 wicks, I got 53 examples. The results are summarized as follows:
  • Character is turtle-inspired creature: 19/53 or 35.8%
  • Character is a turtle: 7/53 or 13.2%
  • Character is a magical turtle: 3/53 or 5.7%
  • Character has turtle-inspired powers: 2/53 or 3.8%
  • Turtle-inspired mech: 2/53 or 3.8%
  • Pet turtle: 2/53 or 3.8%
  • Turtles are part of the work: 5/53 or 9.4%
  • Ancient turtle species appears: 3/53 or 5.7%
  • Other: 4/53 or 7.5%
  • ZCE/LCE: 6/53 or 11.3%
"Other" contained a one-off comic involving turtles, someone's religious beliefs involving a turtle, a dinosaur that has some turtle-like resemblance, and someone with a turtle motif.

What to do? "Characters whose designs are inspired by turtles" comprises the biggest chunk of wicks. Is that trope-worthy? Regardless, this trope with its current definition is chairs and should either be overhauled or cut.

I think "X Exists" indexes are a problem similar to the "Works about X" indexes and wouldn’t mind cutting it alongside Turtle Power or I guess turning the page into a disambiguation.

I'd personally suggest cutting Turtle Power and merging Index in a Half Shell with Shell Tropes and Reptile and Amphibian Tropes, whichever tropes fit which more.

I'm in favour of turning both Turtle Power and Index in a Half Shell into redirects to Shell Tropes. Not all of the tropes on the index belong there, but the names and references emphasize the protective shell.

I'd also be okay with both being cut, but redirect over cut. I'm against disambiguation.

Almost all the tropes listed on Index in a Half Shell are also on Shell Tropes as well, so I guess they can be merged safely. Those that don't fit the latter (e.g. Wise Old Turtle) can be merged to Reptile and Amphibian Tropes.

As for Turtle Power, I agree with [up].

Why not split this trope into one trope being about heroic turtles and another one being about villainous turtles?

[up]Do turtles have specific Animal Stereotypes that can lend itself to heroism or villainy? We don't want this to be a meaningless list of "heroic/villainous character happens to be a turtle", which aren't really tropes.

#37: Sep 28th 2022 at 7:19:26 PM

nothing in the wick check is pointing to a good turtle/bad turtle split.

also we generally don't do "animal but good/bad" tropes unless there's a notable stereotype for it. And even so, in this case Reptiles Are Abhorrent would cover evil turtles. I don't particularly see turtles as constantly being heroic so I question that even being a trope.

I think with Sturdy and Steady Turtles and Wise Old Turtle all widespread turtle stereotypes are already covered, so there's no point in keeping this trope, let alone splitting into two more.

Edit: I realize that the (arguably) most famous heroic turtles Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles don't fit into either trope. But that because they are intentionally made to play against stereotype.

    a mech is a turtle-inspired mech 2
  1. TabletopGame.Battle Tech: Stone Wall: While many mechs are heavily armoured, the most triumphant example is undoubtedly the aptly-named Great Turtle. It's a quadrupedal mech, which means it can mount more armour than a biped, and weighs 100 tons, giving it the maximum armour potential of any mech outside Superheavy designs. It mounts the maximum possible amount of armour, but what really makes the Great Turtle this trope is the type of armour it mounts; Hardened Armour, which reduces all damage taken by half. On top of that is the fact that its cockpit is torso-mounted, meaning it can keep fighting even if its head gets blown off. The downside is its low mobility and relative lack of weapons, although the former is mostly offset by its Jump Jets. a mech is a turtle-inspired mech
