Go To

The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

[up][up] That's a stretch. Not everything related to raids has to do with the US Capitol storming. On the earlier page, I mentioned the storming of the US Capitol. Could I mention it again?

I pinned and followed a few works likely to fall guilty of hindsight rot (a term I made up), so when bad hindsight examples are added, I’d bring them here.

Reposting this example from the previous page, since I didn't get a response:

Bringing up the following example from Dogma:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the scene where Azrael holds the gang hostage at the bar, Jay can occasionally be seen sleeping in the background. This was not a gag, as Jason Mewes had lied to Kevin Smith about having kicked his heroin addiction, a side effect of which was frequent bouts of drowsiness (this despite Smith congratulating Mewes by writing "See? Sober living paid off" in the credits). This resulted in the two briefly falling out and Mewes having to go to rehab twice between 2002 and 2010 before he actually became sober for good.

This was added to Jeopardy!:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Alex telling a contestant in his final episode that he too owns more books than he could ever read in his life. Trebek would die two weeks after the episode was taped.

I can't say it's even Hindsight, since while in real life Trebek died over a month ago, that episode just came out. There's no hindsight since everyone watching the episode already knew he was deceased. It's an uncomfortable comment to be sure, but...

It sounds more like a deliberately self-aware commentary on his recognition of his own impending mortality. Even if it came out beforehand it'd be foresight, not hindsight.

Since no one responded, I might just post it again:

Because of the recent storming of the United States Capitol, there may soon be shoehorns about the storming added to YMMV pages.

An example of a shoehorn is riots as a whole, which of course, has always happened during other earlier real life events, like the police riots from the BLM movement.

In other words, Not everything related to riots has to do with the United States Capitol storming.

Speaking of Hindsight, should we add a note to FunnyAneurysmMoment.Saturday Night Live that Alex Trebek and Sean Connery's deaths do not automatically make "Celebrity Jeopardy" a FAM? I just had to remove another example that listed their deaths as cause for FAM, without even mentioning a specific scene in the show.

"Reminder that a celebrity death does not make all jokes about the celebrity Funny Aneurysm Moments. Please refrain from adding examples about Alex Trebek, Sean Connery, or any other celebrity's death unless their depiction on SNL relates to their manner of death in some way."

How's that? Maybe politically-charged examples should be mentioned too as SNL attracts those a lot.

Crantastic just removed my entry from Avengers: Endgame, claiming that it was based on false information (and also taking three redundant posts to do so, which is a big editing no-no at that). Even though, when I added that entry, I was aware that the original version of that tweet was factually inaccurate, and thus looked for a more verifiable and accurate version of that information to cite in the entry, and attempted to word it to avoid misinformation.

Do I have permission to ask someone to re-add the entry to avoid an edit war? I believe I've restored it at least once after someone else deleted it believing it to be a COVID shoehorn, even though the entry does not specifically cite COVID so much as a more specific event only indirectly connected to COVID.

To avoid further edit wars, I might reword it as such:

Bringing up the following examples from BrainScratch Commentaries:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Amanda mentioned in the Ib commentary she doesn't like to bug people out. And then she found out that she's considered The Scrappy of the group by many.
    • Many jokes about Ryan being quiet in some commentaries became a lot less funny after he revealed it was because of his Depression.
    • During recording for the second part of the Sonic Mania commentary, Lewis had doubts that the PC version's delay was for improving the DRM on the game. At the same time the part went live, controversy was already breaking out about the PC version having the Denuvo DRM.
    • In Part 8 of the N Sane Trilogy version of Crash Bandicoot Warped, Johnny mentioned that he listened to Nostalgia Critic in the background while working, causing a brief discussion on their opinions on him... However, by the time that this part was uploaded, the March 2018 Mass Exodus was recently released and revealed a lot of mismanagement in Channel Awesome.
    • In part 4 of the Gravity Rush commentary, Ted joked how he tweeted about Dragon Quest every 2 days... However, when that was uploaded, Ted recently announced he was going cut down on how much he uses Twitter due to the recent backlash on his opinions on RO Ms counting as Piracy.
    • During the Sun and Moon commentary, Ted commented that he hoped for some kind of a spin-off that would be set in the reality of the Ultra Beasts to learn more about them before remarking that Pokémon has a bad habit of tossing ideas after a short amount of time. Then we learned more about Sword and Shield...

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Watching Lewis' kleptomania in the Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) playthrough prompts Johnny to ask what will happen if Lewis ever decides to play Pokémon for the channel. Cut to two years later, as Lewis begins his playthrough of Pokémon Leaf Green, which, before being commandeered by Johnny, is insanely slow-paced (it takes 2 and a half parts to get to BROCK). Lewis catches multiple fodder Pokémon, takes the time to explore every aspect of the game ad nausea (as in talking to EVERY NPC and reading EVERY sign at the lowest possible text speed), and remains consistently lax at actually editing bits out (enough to make even Ryan complain).
    • To add to this, Ryan made jokes during the Sonic playthrough about a Pokémon playthrough by Lewis having hundreds of parts and taking forever. Johnny points out at one point during the actual playthrough that if it were to continue in that manner, it would take them well over two years to actually get through it.
    • During a random bout in Brawl, Johnny told Clement Mega Man wouldn't be in Super Smash Bros. 4. Come the official announcement and Mega Man was the HIGHLIGHTED new character.
      • Later, in their final Brawl livestream, Johnny specifically invokes Clement's prediction while saying Palutena should be in Smash 4. Guess who was announced for the game.
    • An earlier one. In their Super Mario 64 playthrough, they speak about Miyamoto's opinions on cats. Lo, and behold...
    • During the Pokémon 2000 movie commentary, when Ash asks for a boat to fulfill the prophecy, the crew jokingly says he's going to use it to climb a mountain. Later on, that same boat is actually used to climb a mountain on one of the three islands and helps Ash obtain a MacGuffin. The boat goes on to become the most important thing in the movie.
    • In part 4 of the Sonic Heroes commentary, Lewis mentions that Sonic Shorts had ended. While it's debateable at the time it was recorded if it happened, but by the time the part was uploaded, the Sonic Paradox team had finally put their Grand Finale out.
    • In Part 9 of Shadow the Hedgehog, the guys have a debate about the president in the Sonic universe until Lewis says "Mr. President should have vetoed Sonic 06, but he didn't.", and Johnny follows up with "And that's why we have Obama." what puts this here is that this part was recorder before, and uploaded after, the 2012 presidential elections, where presumably everyone voted for him.
    • In Part 6 of Devil May Cry, John talks about him wanting hover boards before 2015. Later in March...
    • In Part 4 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the guys talk about wanting a Luigi's Mansion for the 3DS (It should also be noted that they discused potential names for what would become the Wii U earlier in the Playthrough).
    • In Part 3 of Link: The Faces of Evil, Ryan mocks fans of Gen 3 for their expectations of remakes that won't happen, and Ted agrees that such fans should stop getting their hopes up. About a month after the recording was posted, look what was announced....
    • In Part 3 of Sonic '06, Ryan jokes about how Lewis is so good at the game, that he'll be the one playing Superman 64 for the channel. When they got around to playing that game, Lewis ended up being the most competent at controlling Superman.
      • It became even funnier when it turned out that Ryan was way better at the game than both Lewis and Ted combined. And it was his second time playing it.
    • In Part 2 of Mario Party, Lewis claims that chance time is only good "when it gets me a free star." And then in Part 3, Lewis ends up stealing Mario's star via chance time.
    • In the Space Jam commentary, Lewis claims that Slam Jam is the Guile's theme of the next generation. There is a remix that combines Slam Jam and Guile's theme.
    • When Ryan wins the first board of their Mario Party 3 playthrough, he quotes "You're Winner!" and John replies with "you're always winner!" Ryan would then go on to win all three boards that they played.
    • During the Majora's Mask commentary, Ted comments on the unlikelihood of a 3DS remake of the game. An official remake had been announced just before the part came out. Johnny (the editor of the commentary) lampshades this by showing the remake's box art while repeating and slowing down Ted's voice.
Ted: Iii doon't thiiink it's goonaa haaapen.
    • Ted said that parties were too formal for Bowser. Well, he's going to have to take that back now, since Bowser stars in Mario Party 10, enough that people are calling it Bowser Party.
    • In Azure Striker Gunvolt Part 4, Johnny makes a reference to the fact that Brainscratch's videos are uploaded at midnight. The video came out after Ryan announced the videos were going to be uploaded at noon from now on.
    • At the end of the Mario Party 3 live playthrough, the group was so disgusted by Waluigi winning despite doing nothing but going in circles that they decided to play Sonic Shuffle next year instead of more Mario Party. Cue them live playing Sonic Shuffle at Momocon 2015 and finding it so incredibly boring that they went back to do a playthrough of Mario Party (the fourth one though, not the third).
    • In the DmC: Devil May Cry commentary, Lewis discusses how he dislikes the constant use of Dante's outfit from Devil May Cry 3, namely as a DLC costume in DmC, and prefers the design for his outfit in the original game. In the Definitive Edition, an extra skin for Dante is added in the form of that exact outfit.
      • Made even funnier when Lewis describes Vergil's Downfall, highlighting how Vergil's hair at the end becomes spiked up, to which Johnny asks if it could have been referencing Vergil's look in Devil May Cry 3. Vergil also found himself with a bonus costume in the Definitive Edition: An outfit designed to mimic his original design in Devil May Cry 3.
    • In the first part of the Mario Kart 64 commentary, they predicted the DLC for Mario Kart 8.
Ryan: That would be funny, Link in a go-kart!
    • In Part 10 of Sonic Unleashed, Gareth jokes about the enemies in Cool Edge Night, referring to them as "Poliwhirl and Fire Poliwhirl", with Ted jokingly saying not to give Game Freak ideas. Come Pokémon Sun and Moon, Alolan forms were introduced, some with equally contradictory types (such as Ice Vulpix), though no Poliwhirl form appeared in the final game.
    • In Part 14 of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, the group jokingly bring up the various NX rumors that were happening at the time. The part was released the same day that the NX was officially revealed, now called the Nintendo Switch.
    • In Part 26 of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker a discussion about game releases lead to Gareth joking about Kingdom Hearts rereleases being rerelased till the end of time. The day after the part went up, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 were announced to being released on PS4.
    • For Momocon 2017, the guys did a Bubsy playthrough for the audience to commentate over... Guess what happened 6 days later.
    • During the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Live LP, Ted comments on how Marina often loses to Pearl... hours after it was uploaded, Marina lost Splatfest yet again.
    • In part 19 of Gravity Rush, Ted accidentally brings up Space Jam. 2 days later, Space Jam 2 was announced.
    • During the Pokémon Yellow commentary, Ryan said he was going to pass on Pokémon Black and White in favor of the inevitable Pokémon Gray that he also expected to be 3DS-enhanced. Suffice to say, neither of his expectations turned out to be correct.

From YMMV.Binging With Babish:

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Eggs in a Nest episode was notably regarded as "a Frasier episode" by a YouTube commenter. Just less than a week after that comment on February 4, John Mahoney, the actor who played Frasier's father, passed away. Said episode also featured Moonstruck, another film Mahoney appeared in.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Regarding John Mahoney's death mentioned above in Harsher in Hindsight, the following week, Andrew paid tribute to Mahoney by finally finishing and releasing the long-awaited Frasier episode. The video even ends with a departing sentence: "For John Mahoney - Thanks for making us laugh", alongside Andrew opening a Ballantine beer, Mahoney's character Martin Crane's favorite drink.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the Timpano episode, during Andrew's deranged sleep-deprived ramblings he claims "it's way worse to lose your hair than to go gray". Both things have since happened to Andrew and not only has he gotten over it, but he claims his current Bald Of Awesome has gotten him more dates than when he had hair.
    • The apple pie episode once you find out Andrew was stoned off his ass while doing the voice over and editing. It shows.

An entry that isn't on the page, but I want assessment:

Looking at Doug

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • "Doug Gets Busted" is this, since it consists of Doug thinking he destroyed the science lab with his volcano project. This episode is definitely more then a little awkward to watch today with bomb threats and school shootings becoming more rampant. Another school shooting shoehorn
    • Every interaction with Doug and Patti would be seen as this when you remember in 2016 Word of God announced the two never became a couple. Maybe, I could go either way on that one
    • In "Doug's Marriage Madness", Doug's fear of change only worsens when he sees that a local toy store became a clothing store, Tux "R" Us. Real-life Toys "R" Us store closures would gradually become more common, with all the remaining ones finally shutting down in 2018, though it became less depressing later that same year when it was announced the stores would be re-opening. Businesses close and become something else all the time, not just Toys "R" Us
    • In one episode of the Nickelodeon series, Doug tells his friends he's broke, and Beebe asks, "'Broke'? What's 'broke'?" She'd find out what "broke" was in the Disney episode "Beebe Goes Broke," when her family is forced to declare bankruptcy due to bad investments. Seems valid
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Doug insisting that "It's a journal, not a diary!" Shoehorn
    • In one Nick episode, Patti worries she got her hair cut too short. (Actually, it really looks no different, so it's essentially an Informed Flaw.) Regardless, fast-forward to the Disney years and... well, Patti didn't seem to mind her short hair then. What?
    • In the pilot episode, "Doug Can't Dance", one of the kids at the costume party is dressed like Mickey Mouse, as well as Roger's cat, Stinky, in the episode "Doug Says Goodbye" at another costume party. And in "Doug's Garage Band", in Doug's fantasy of being interviewed by a Julie Brown-like music journalist, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss it Disney reference: a piece of merchandise with Doug's name on it and the "D" rendered Disney-style. Fast forward a few years, and the mouse owns Doug. Disney owns the show now, seems like a really weak shoehorn
    • If you thought this would be the only Viacom franchise Disney would buy... think again. Another Disney shoehorn that just comes out of nowhere
    • With him, the mouse acquires Skeeter's Quailman alter ego Silver Skeeter. Fast forward another few years, and the mouse acquires Marvel Comics and with them Silver Surfer. Again with the Disney shoehorns
    • The first episode involved a monster hunt in this case the Nematode/Neematoad of Stinsen's Pond... in the Disney series and movie there really is a monster in Lucky Duck Lake. Yes, there's a monster, so how is this Hilarious in Hindsight again?
    • Doug imagining Patti losing to him due to a mix-up in The Most Wonderful Person in the World contest has shades of Steve Harvey 22 years prior. I'm sure Steve Harvey wasn't the only person involved in a mix-up
    • In "Doug's Lucky Hat", after he loses the titular article of clothing, he has a fantasy about being a down-on-his-luck lucky socks salesman, and a rich Roger gets out of his Limousine and buys a pair. Roger became exactly that in the first episode of the Disney series. Not really seeing much of a connection beyond Roger becoming rich
    • In "Doug's Big Nose", Doug tries to get out of getting his school picture taken by Playing Sick. One of the diseases he lists off to the school nurse is "turkey pox". Said disease ends up rearing its head in Jim Jenkins' next show, Allegra's Window. Seems specific enough, maybe, unless it's something of a callback
