Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

[up] yeah I’ll probably agree with you on Serrator (as much as I love him as a villain he is sadistic with his manipulation not to mention his Villainous Breakdown after being blindsided).

From what I remember from Megaforce Vrak is a very popular villain, and is a brilliant manipulator. He is a CM but I don’t think that he was sadistic in his actions that it Would take away from his Magnificence

I mean I love Vrak. He is one of the few good things about Megaforce. I also love Serrator, but yeah I don't think he comes close to this trope.

Regarding the rarity Power Rangers M Bs. I'm not suprised about the lack of M Bs. A lot of the villains are either way too smug, cartoony or way too sadistic. And some of the more complex ones also had significant flaws that prevent them from becoming M Bs(ie: Ransik and Mesogog are both major cases of Politically Incorrect Villain with the former's Freudian Excuse not holding up in subsequent rewatches despite initial perception of the character as 100% sympathetic even through he redeemed himself).

Vrak is definitely worth a look for a potential CM crossover.

Deviot might be too much of a smug snake but I'm currently looking into Deviot too as another CM crossover.

Now onto Astronema's effortpost:

  • Power Rangers in Space: Astronema is the self-proclaimed "Princess of Evil" and the second in command of the United Alliance of Evil. Tasked by Dark Specter to destroy the Space Rangers, Astronema would fight many battles with the Space Rangers before finding out her identity as Andros' long lost sister Karone, leading to her defection to the Rangers. Upon being kidnapped by a reprogrammed Ecliptor and installed with neural implants to keep her on the side of evil, Astronema decides to kill both the Power Rangers and and Dark Specter in order to ursurp Dthe latter's position as Grand Monarch of Evil through creating the Psycho Rangers, whom beat the Rangers to an inch of their lives in their earlier encounters and drew their power from Dark Specter's lifeforce until the Rangers were able to defeat the Psychos by changing their tactics in engaging them and expoliting their lack of ability to work as a team. Despite this loss, Astronema would continue to inflict significant damage on the Rangers, successfully luring the Rangers into a trap that saw the destruction of the Delta Megazord by Ecliptor, and successful destroying the Mega Voyager using Tankenstein in the subsequent episode. Never suffering any significant Villain Decay throughout the series, Astronema would be one of the most iconic villains in Power Rangers.

Ransik... hm. He might be one to look into, since his reason for hating humans is real strong. The thing that I think would DQ him is how little he cares about his fellow Mutants, only really caring about revenge on the humanity that created and spurned him.

I forget about Mesagog, but I just remembered one of Ransik's nastiest moments is trying to kill a human that saved his life, calling him a fool for helping a mutant.

That... might hurt his case.

EDIT: Actually, since we're talking Mesagog, why does he not count as a CM again? Something about Moral Agency? I know this isn't the place for it, so if someone could just link me to the CM discussion on him I'd appreciate it.

I thought it was heinous standard.

Doesn't he lack the personal villany of a lot of the other bad guys. Hes actually oddly pragmatic and doesn't go out of his way to be a Dick.

I kinda think he might be actually be worth an MB ep. His motives stem from his belief that dinosaurs should return to being the "rightful rulers" of earth as they once were and it's not really played as genuine bigotry which they focused on unless my memory is faulty.

Speaking of time force. What do you think on Frax ?

Would he be a better choice over Ransik ?

[up] You could do it if you want and Frax might make it, but but I thought it was agency issues Mesagog didn't count as a CM. Though I get that opinion to, even it is one I do personally with.

I also thought it was agency problems. Which... if I'm remembering right might not be a problem? Like, it might be a Zanza thing where we assume no agency but nothing in the story itself suggests no agency?

I actually remember the old CM entry for Mesagog calling him Dino-Hitler. A part of me misses the old write ups.

But... maybe we should move away from CM talk? Getting off topic and all.

Frax might be a real good call.

To be clear, Mesogog and Anton Mercer are two sides of the same coin, yet partially distinct. When they split off, Mesogog finally can do whatever he wants. I think the issue was he wasn't heinous enough after that(cause really, his most memorable moments are still while their minds are together)? But he was legit held back for a long time by Mercer's humanity(well, so they say. He didn't really become notable even after the split either). Also, Mercer originally was turned into Mesogog.

I don't remember the entire reasoning beyond that, so I may be missing a few details of why he was voted down.

After banding together with the other supervillains of the world, destroying the heroes completely and rewriting reality to make ordinary people forget the old world, the Killer worked for decades as a Professional Killer for the Fraternity while keeping an eye on Wesley Gibson, his only son whom he was forced to abandon. The Killer fakes his own death so that Wesley will inherit his seat at the Fraternity and make a name for himself, then destroy the diabolical Mr. Rictus in an Enemy Civil War and take over from the Professor. Feeling his own age, the Killer knows that his days are numbered, and considers the only person worth killing him to be the one to carry on his legacy. Smooth, scheming, and deadly lethal, the Killer stands out as the most dignified of the comic's Card-Carrying Villains.
  • The Dictator: Tamir Aladeen is the Treacherous Adviser and uncle to Admiral General Haffaz Aladeen who plots to overthrow the titular dictator. Upon arriving in New York City Tamir arranges Aladeen to be kidnapped and killed while he replaces him with a mentally challenged body double, Efawadh. A plan that fails only due to Aladeen's last minute intervention, Tamir uses this opportunity to make an attempt on Aladeen's life.
  • Puss in Boots: The titular character is a suave and shrewd pet cat of a miller. When the miller's youngest son inherits the cat, the cat promises his new master riches if he gave the cat a pair of boots. The cat then makes occasional visits to the local king, paying him tribute in his master's name with animals the cat had hunted. Having his master masquerade as a noble, the cat proceeds to make sure that his lie holds up. He gets rid of his master's old clothes, lying to the king that they had been stolen while he was bathing. He then clears the countryside of its peasants, claiming it has his master's land. Finally, he comes across a castle owned by a shape-shifting ogre. Stoking the ogre's ego, the cat tricks the ogre into transforming into a mouse, where the cat takes the opportunity to eat the defenceless ogre. Claiming the castle as his master's, the cat succeeds in impressing the king. The king gives the master his daughter's hand in marriage, while elevating the cat as a lord. The cat, now having grown bored, then spends his time chasing mice for his amusement.

When Toxica fumbles his first plan, Onikage promises he can redeem her if he cuts off her horn to render her immune to the Sacred Water of Animaria, lying that Duke Orgs' horns grow back. This leads to Toxica's death and Shayla's capture. On the verge of defeating the Power Rangers, Onikage reveals his true allegiance as Master Org's right hand man, rendering Mandilok defenseless and resulting in their death. Onikage is defeated in the end mostly by luck but succeeds in almost all his goals, setting the stage for the rest of the season despite only appearing in two episodes.
  • Chronicles of Tsufanubra: Veryl manipulates everyone in the game like fiddles. As the "savior" of the Kjrn he seeks to end the Fantastic Racism and will do anything to achieve this goal. He raises Celes to be the new goddess so he could have her as a part of his ambitions as a god. He also manipulates Vladimir to help him, sending him to Celes' group when he doesn't need him before annihilating the kingdom. Revealing his desire to become god and save his kind Veryl gives Celes a chance to join her before dying in the battle with her group fighting for his race.

Shadar keeps up with Deimos and Apollo, and manages to thwart some of their plans. He also manages to thwart Faust and Abel's attempts to force to kill him as Shadar tries to kill Slade, his goal being to murder people to keep the balance all without needing to use his One-Winged Angel form.
    • Abel started as a nobody, but after getting a magical eye, he trained Slade and pretended to be killed after revealing his agenda trying to kill Khan in Slade's mind, only being stopped by Shadar. He later returns by murdering Apollo, a Manipulative Bastard himself, and came dangerously close to wiping out the world. Even in the face of death, Abel tries to muster himself to die with dignity.
  • DC Universe Animated Original Movies:
    • Batman: Under the Red Hood: Jason Todd, after his death at the hands of The Joker and his revival, becomes a much darker figure. Becoming the Red Hood, Jason sets about on his revenge, manipulating Batman, Gotham's criminal enterprises and even the League of Assassins to engineer conflicts to bring him close to the Joker and Batman. Confronting his former mentor, Jason reveals his deep bitterness at the Joker's survival, declaring he believed he would be the last person Batman ever let the Joker hurt. With a manipulative genius to rival even Batman and a hunger to see his own brutal justice enacted, Jason shows he is more than a match for the world's greatest Detective.
    • Justice League: Doom: Vandal Savage, the Big Bad, steals all of Batman's plans aimed at incapacitating the Justice League should they ever turn to darkness or prove too dangerous, taking them and making them far more lethal and dangerous. Recruiting his very own Legion of Doom, Vandal has them lure the League into traps before putting the countermeasures into placing, nearly killing every single member of the League in a single night. Vandal reveals his true plans to cause a solar flare to strike earth so he may cause the conflict that he feels is necessary for human advancement and cause the world to submit to his rule, offering to share the rulership with his new Legion. A charming, sophisticated villain, Vandal shows he has surpassed the savagery he has born into, nearly completely erasing the League in one fell stroke with the world falling perilously close to Vandal's utter victory.
    • Batman: Assault on Arkham: Floyd Lawton, aka Deadshot, is a highly efficient assassin and master marksman whose primary desire is to be reunited with his daughter. Employed by Amanda Waller as the leader of Task Force X, aka the Suicide Squad, Deadshot organizes an infiltration of Arkham Asylum to acquire stolen information from the Riddler. Throughout the mission, Deadshot displays his cunning and tactical genius as he repeatedly improvises when faced with numerous setbacks by his more reckless and untrustworthy allies, Batman and the Joker, and even fearlessly stares down the latter at gunpoint and bluffs him into wasting his only bullet. Managing to escape via helicopter in the midst of a prison riot while his allies are either killed or detained, Deadshot then single-handedly defeats the Joker in combat, withstanding multiple near-fatal injuries in the process. In the end, Deadshot achieves his goal of reuniting with his daughter, and spends the last few moments of the film scoping Amanda Waller a distance away with a sniper rifle, intent on making her pay for using him.

[up] Speaking of which, here's what I've found in the YMMV page:

  • Magnificent Bastard:
    • Elias and Root.
    • As of the conclusion of "God Mode," Harold Finch qualifies as one as well after deliberately putting a virus into the hands of the Machine's enemies, then hiding a virus within that virus that basically gives the Machine complete autonomy to protect itself.
    • Carter of all people in "Endgame." She starts a war between HR and the Russians, decimating both organizations.
    • Greer, who somehow always manages to get what he wants.
    • Samaritan is already showing significant chops in the planning department. Makes sense, given Greer directly above helped make it what it is. Nautilus shows it completely bamboozling Finch and cheerfully walking away with absolutely no damage to its long-term schemes despite the target of its recruitment efforts being directly involved with him.

Which ones should go and which ones should stay?

I'm currently in the midst of a rewatch of Person of Interest, specifically keeping watch for any potentials for both Magnificent Bastard and Complete Monster. I can say with certainty that neither Carter nor Finch count (they're both heroes, albeit extremely capable ones), while Elias, Root, Greer, and Samaritan are all on my watchlist; I'm planning to do effortposts on each of them when I'm finished with the series (which may take a while, since they all have arcs spread out over all five seasons), and I'm very confident about at least one, maybe even all of them counting.

EDIT: Shoot (pun unintended), sorry, k410ren; didn't see your post. How do you want to sort this?

On the topic of the DC Animated Movies, shouldn't the entries be moved to the Film subpage (specifically, the Animated section) rather than Western Animation?

Why so serious?

[up][up]I'd say that Elias definitely has a chance for MB, I could PM you what I have for the first season.

As for CM, I found Alex Declan a couple of years ago. Let me know via PMs if you find any candidates.
