Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?
Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?
Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?
Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.
Useful Tips:
- Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
- Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
- Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
- Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
- Wrong: Badass Adorable
- Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
- When is normally far less important than How.
- A character name is not an explanation.
- Wrong: Full Moon Silhouette: Diana
- Right: Full Moon Silhouette: At the end of her transformation sequence into Moon Princess Misty, Diana is shown flying across the full moon riding a rutabaga.

For best results, please include why you think an example is iffy in your first post.
Also, many oft-misused tropes/topics have their own threads, such as Surprisingly Realistic Outcome (here) and Fan-Preferred Couple (here). Tropers are better able to give feedback on examples you bring up to specific threads.
For cleaning up examples of Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard, you must use their dedicated threads: Complete Monster Cleanup, Magnificent Bastard Cleanup.

EDIT: I didn't mention that this is reposted.
I don't feel this example from Cinder's folder in Characters. The Makings Of Team CRME is an example and I feel the first paragraph fits more under Fatal Flaw. What do you all think?

from A Beautiful Mind:
- E = MC Hammer: Averted. Ron Howard hired actual mathematics professors to hand double for Crowe during the writing sequences to make sure all of his equations were mathematically accurate.
is this a notable enough aversion to list? should it be listed as Defied instead?
I think that would just be Shown Their Work. Iirc, Defied has to be in-universe
Absolute destiny... apeachalypse?Does this constitute an example of Infernal Retaliation, y'all think, or is it too oblique?
- In Dicey Dungeons, the Witch can throw her dice as a last-resort move, dealing one point of damage for each dice thrown — but if any of her dice are on fire (due to having been inflicted with Burn) they'll inflict two damage instead.
Doesn't indicate that the target gets set on fire and becomes more dangerous as a result, as opposed to just getting mildly singed, which is what I'd expect from that description. (Context makes it sound like a tiny amount of damage.)
Question: I want to add this example to Bury Your Art:
- The South Park episodes "Super Best Friends", "200", and "201" were removed from reruns and online platforms following threats made by Islamic extremists against the show's creators over the visual depictions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the episodes. Years later, when the show came to HBO Max, the "Cartoon Wars" two-parter would also be removed, likely for similar reasons as it also features a depiction of Muhammad.
This fits Bury Your Art, right? And I tried to be very delicate with my wording—do I still need to word this more carefully? (And as a side note, is the Cartoon Wars pothole considered a chained sinkhole?)

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallThat's more Executive Meddling, Parker and Stone were quite upset that Comedy Central censored them.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meBut there are other examples on Bury Your Art where someone other than the creator tried to bury them:
- Fox has adamantly refused to ever officially release Titus on any home release beyond two contractually obligated DVD sets in the early 2000's (which are long out of print and very expensive) or streaming platform, as Christopher Titus insulted the network executives when they suggested that his character break up with Erin in the show. Titus, however, has placed all the episodes on his personal channel on YouTube, and has vowed to keep them up until Fox demands that he stop.
- In mid-2022, due to internal restructuring at Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO Max pulled a number of shows off its library, including Uncle Grandpa, OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart, and Infinity Train, removed all references to them in official documentation and social media, and recalled DVD releases for tax writeoffs. Infinity Train currently remains purchasable digitally on sites like iTunes and Amazon Prime Video, but creator Owen Dennis voiced skepticism about the permanency of it, instead encouraging fans to pirate the show online.
Does something count as Bury Your Art if someone other than the creator tries to bury it?
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallAs I read the trope, it's focusing mainly on creators burying their own work (normally out of embarassment). I would argue that networks/studios pulling items is not the same.
EDIT: That HBOMax is definitely misuse, that's internal politics resulting in cancellations and weird pulls

I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meAlright, so my example doesn't count.
Should I remove the two examples I brought up?
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallLooking at both of them, that's misuse in my book.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meAlright, I've removed them. Thanks.

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallSo the South Park example would fit under Banned Episode, FYI.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meIt's already listed there, but thanks.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI have these examples typed out, but not sure they count, so I haven't added them.
Can Americans Hate Tingle be two way if it's a crossover between international media, and neither fanbase likes it?
- A two way example happened with Welcome to the Internet, a collaborative EP between Russian rave band Little Big and American singer Oliver Tree. Western fans of Oliver Tree did not like how the hyper, energetic contributions of Little Big contrasted Oliver's typical music, which is more mellow and serious. Meanwhile, Russian fans of Little Big felt Oliver's presence was shoehorned in, and that he was only present in an attempt to give Little Big a western audience. As a result, the EP isn't well regarded by either fanbase.
Can something be an Un Entendre if there's no character to interpret the "entendre"? I guess in this case the "character" would be the listener, but I'm not sure it counts.
- In the outro of Yung Gravy's song "Patrice", he insists that the "gravy" he refers to in the intro is literal.
Gravy: You know, this gravy shit isn't some weird fuckin' sexual metaphor. Your bitch legitimately has top shelf gravy on her hands, face, and knees.
A while back I listed the new Star Wars films as an example of Hijacked Destiny and another troper unilaterally deleted it last month, calling it "opinion-based". But isn't that exactly what happened? The entire saga was given a Happy Ending Override with everything the supposed "chosen ones" did being meaningless, only for another character to save the day and claim their name & legacy for themselves while they're at it. They even had people directly involved with the series stating that Rey was the real chosen one all along.
Your first example seems perfectly valid, I feel that the second one is more Get Your Mind Out of the Gutter but I'm not against it.

i think the Un Entendre example is valid. not sure about the Americans Hate Tingle one, but i think it's also valid.
I don't think it's an opinion-based entry. I've restored it for now.
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.Warning, a minor spoiler to Midnight Mass (2021):
- Too Dumb to Live: Bowl is walking home at night and passes an abandoned house...the door of which creaks open loudly just as he's walked past. When he goes back to investigate, something within the house repeats everything he says. Thinking it's one of the teens he deals weed to, he enters and is promptly pounced on by the "Angel". Justified as Bowl has no real reason to be afraid of anyone on the island (the Sherrif mentions there is basically no violent crime in the town for a century), and has no reason to think it's anything but a harmless prank.
Is it really Too Dumb to Live if it's "justified"?

Would it still be Out with a Bang if the character died by autoerotic asphyxiation?
Edited by YuriHaru567 on Sep 4th 2022 at 3:05:06 AM
Trans rights are human rights! This was added to The Secret of NIMH.
- Ice-Cream Koan: The inscription on the back of the amulet: "You can unlock any door, if you only have the key".
I don't remember this phrase being treated as nonsensical in-universe, so does this count or is it just a troper complaining about this phrase not making sense?
Ice-Cream Koan does not say anything about having to be treated as nonsensical in-universe specifically - though it would probably be better if it did.
I believe that falls under Erotic Asphyxiation. EA doesn't require death, but it's a common side effect.
Side note, the auto in auto-erotic means the person did it by themselves, which rules out dying during intercourse.

I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose me(x5) It depends on what it is imo, though I don't think that counts.
Done. I would assume that it was originally in the Characters folder.
I’m gonna put some Gloom in your eye.
