Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Quick question about the Black Dude Dies First trope: Does it apply to a character who has dark skin in general? For example, in Sakura Wars (2019), Anastasia Palma, the sole member of the Flower Division who has dark skin, is the first of the main heroines to die onscreen at Yasha's hands in the penultimate chapter. However, it's subverted when she gets revived along with the rest of her comrades in the next chapter. Or would that count as misuse?

By the way this example from Knives Out reads off to me.

  • WTH, Casting Agency?: Following the success of the film; many have questioned the casting of pale-skinned, green-eyed Ana de Armas as representative of immigrants, especially those who suffer from poverty and oppression the US. Critics usually bring up the fact that she can play white characters with ease, such as Marilyn Monroe, and that all that is publicly known of her lineage is that she has some European Spanish blood. (It's worth noting that comprehensive site Ethnicelebs simply lists her heritage as "Spanish, possibly other.") Given the fact that white-passing Latinos have a tendency not to disclose their non-European ancestry, it's entirely possible de Armas is just a very white-passing mixed Latina, and even Dwayne Johnson (who is of predominantly Black and Samoan ancestry) has been cast many times as white characters. At the end of the day, though, this backlash does have a point, in that the most Ambiguously Brown actress possible was chosen for the role of a struggling immigrant.

The YMMV page for Date A Live has its Seasonal Rot described as:

  • The second anime season usually gets called out for this due to the rushed pacing of the Miku / Dark Tohka arc. The animation wasn't exactly top-notch at this point either.either.
  • The third season gets even more flak for its often subpar art and animation, and pacing issues reaching a nadir in the Volume 12 adaptation getting squeezed entirely into the final episode and leaving out major plot points for the future.

Is this the correct use for Seasonal Rot? These entries are just describing flaws and don't go into much detail on how the jeopardized the future of Date A Live. No TV season is without its flaws, but they were successful enough to continue the series and ensure future seasons. What should we do about this?

From Jack of All Stats:

  • Mario's balanced nature was codified by Super Mario Bros. 2. Luigi can jump the highest, Toad is the fastest at running and picking up items, and Peach can hover for short periods after jumping. However, Luigi is difficult to control precisely, Toad's jumping is awful, and Peach is exceptionally slow at picking up items. On the other hand, Mario is the second best jumper behind Luigi, the second fastest at picking up items and moving behind Toad, and his controls are very precise. He retains this pattern for Super Mario 3D World.

From Master of None:

  • Watch people play Super Mario Bros. 2, and you'll generally see two kinds of players. Casual players favor the Princess for her ability to hover and skip over difficult sections, or Luigi for his great jumping when Toadstool's jump isn't high enough. Speedrunners replace Toadstool in the above arrangement with Toad, who has the best ground and lifting speed. Mario, though fully capable of finishing the game, largely gets forgotten, as he lacks the specialization of any of the above—he's not as fast as Toad, as high-jumping as Luigi, or as able to bypass hazards as Toadstool.

The two tropes are opposite to each other, and while a character can fit both across different games, it's not possible in the same game.

I think he fits better as the former (Jack of All Stats), so I'd opt to remove the latter (Master of None), but I'd like to consult it here because the second entry claims that many people prefer the other characters in the game (though I'd argue that that's mostly because of preference regarding those characters' specialized skills, rather than Mario being useless).

I'm not sure this on YMMV.Sonic The Hedgehog 1 counts:

  • Dancing Bear: The game was sold on and became popular for two aspects. One, it was a blistering fast game for its time, allegedly thanks to the brazenly marketed "Blast Processing" abilities of the Sega Genesis. To a lesser extent, it was also for having a mild streak of edge to it that was lacking from the more vanilla Super Mario World and Sega's own previous Mario wannabe, Alex Kidd, while still having the lighthearted cartoon appeal lacking from Sega's other arcade ports and more mature games for their console.

I'd say that's not a Dancing Bear. The gimmicks may have helped, but ultimately Sonic 1 was successful on its merits as a game.

Over on Animal Crossing: New Horizons:

  • Stock Beehive: Finally averted. The hive now releases wasps instead of bees (though they’re just as annoying). This is actually correcting a translation error from previous games: the "bees" were always Japanese giant hornets, but since the Japanese term "hachi" refers to bees and hornets collectively, they were mistakenly called bees in the translated versions until now.

The thing about this example is, it's the same hive and the same stinging insects — all that's different now is the English text referring to them. For reference, it looks like this. I'm almost sure this change doesn't "finally avert" the trope.

[up]Yeah I would cut that.

Its Pronounced Tropay's description says that it's supposed to be for when something is pronounced differently in an effort to sound more high class or snooty. But most examples are just general names being pronounced differently from the norm. Is that misuse?

Relatedly, the main series page has

  • Stock Beehive: If you shake a tree, a beehive resembling a paper wasp nest could possibly fall out, and the swarm will try and get you.

Cut that too, or is this okay?

Is the Dumpster Dive trope flexible enough to include the following? I initially thought it did, but rereading the trope page, I am not so sure.

  • Dumpster Dive: The background material for House Cawdor states that they make their living by recycling the industrial waste, rubbish and detritus of the other Houses, the impoverished Cawdor citizens searching through the colossal waste piles of hive in search of anything useful. Although they are all doomed to a lifetime of sifting through trash, the citizens of House Cawdor nonetheless take great pride in their labours, taught as they are that by their suffering they are blessed.

It doesn't include an actual dumpster but it is about going through rubbish to survive/make a living.

[up] - Yeah, I think there's something about dumpsters being confined, and a junkyard or something is different.

Also, the "Make a living out of it".

Maybe just Trash Picking TLP or something. VideoGame.Cute Knight 1 has another example as the only way to make money when trapped in the slums.

From Characters.Sonic The Hedgehog 2020 under Sonic the Hedgehog, are the following two examples notable aversions:

  • Adaptational Ugliness: Averted. In the first trailer, Sonic's realistic design has made him look downright hideous, and more like a bad bootleg version of himself. In the rest of the trailers and the actual movie, however, he looks much more like his video game counterpart, which was a result of fan backlash.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Averted. His peach arms, stomach, and muzzle were initially blue, white, and white respectively. After the redesign, his colors are far more accurate to his game design: the only exception is that his arms are still blue, which even then actually heeds to his design in Sonic Boom.

And from the same page, should this example be allowed on the page - since it's troping a design that ultimately wasn't used in the final film and thus qualifies as What Could Have Been?

  • Anthropomorphic Shift: Sonic was more humanoid looking than his normal Funny Animal appearance in the original promotional material. This extended to his teeth being more human-esque than usual and him having fingernail-esque claws on his non-gloved hands. Post-fandom backlash, and Paramount made him look far more cartoony and expressive to keep him closer to his origins, but still looks slightly more humanoid (having visible shoulders, smaller hands, a small-but-visible neck, and slightly-pronounced calf muscles).
