Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

Reposting from the previous three pages so they won't get lost:

I'm thinking about adding a potential example regarding VideoGame.Sakura Wars. Here goes nothing:

  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • Before launching the official Sakura Wars website in 2000, Sega already had official websites of the original Sega Saturn releases of Sakura Wars and Sakura Wars 2: Thou Shalt Not Die. When Sega redesigned their official website in 2001, the content was not converted to Flash and was lost. There's little chance of finding some of the official material on Sega's pages for the SS releases, such as the promotional videos.
    • Even after Sega redesigned SakuraTaisen.com again in March 2019, the original video content that was on the Sega Channel wasn't converted when it was shut down in late 2010, so fans searching for the original promotional videos will be completely out of luck.
    • The Sakura Wars Online game was released in December 2001, at least eight months after Sega ceased production of the Dreamcast. Through Sega's Open Dice services, there were online voice actor events, gaming competitions, and special events like Valentine's Day or celebrating the players' birthdays. Open Dice shut down on November 30, 2005, making online play impossible.

A sulfuric smell is known to be unpleasant, by itself, would be implying Evil Smells Bad, especially how demonic things are usually made to smell sulfuric?

Is it a requirement of Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep" for a character's real name to never be revealed? One of the characters in Junior Braves of the Apocalypse is only called by his job title throughout the first book. Then in the second book, his name is revealed - but the characters mostly continue to call him by his job title.

A few examples from Hellboy (2019), that I think need looking at.

Does Contrasting Sequel Main Character apply to Sequels only, or can it apply to Continuity Reboots or different adaptations of the same source material as with this example?:

  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: David Harbour has described this movie's version of both HB and Bruttenholm as this:
    • Ron Perlman's version of the character, although nonetheless sarcastic and moody, loved his job and was very close to both his father and Abe Sapien. Harbour's version is more of a moody teenager uncertain about his role in the world and with few friends in the BPRD. Additionally, while Perlman's Hellboy was constantly itching to get out into the world (even posing for pictures with civilians), Harbour's appears to loathe it.
    • In contrast to John Hurt's warm and grandfatherly Professor Bruttenholm, Ian McShane's version appears slightly younger and is more of a colder character who has a strained relationship with his adopted son. Additionally, while Hurt's version was strictly a Non-Action Guy, McShane's portrayal is more of a warrior, and even shown carrying a huge pistol when first meeting Hellboy.

Is it me or does the following example seem like it would fit better under Adaptation Relationship Overhaul?:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the comics Hellboy had a fairly positive relationship with Professor Bruttenholm. Here, Hellboy has a strained relationship with him due to believing that he was raised to be Bruttenholm's weapon.

And I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask but on the Artistic License โ€“ Physics page where would this example go?:

  • Artistic License โ€“ Physics: Hellboy is electrocuted while standing in water by two enemies who are also standing in the same water, yet neither of them get shocked.

Some examples that need looking at.

From Soft Reboot (folder: comic books):

  • Technically, this happens whenever a new writer is chosen for a long-running comic book, such as the ones featuring Superman and Batman. When the previous writer finishes his/her run, they try to conclude as many plotlines as possible so that the new writer can have a clean slate to work with. While the new writer is not obligated to reference anything from the previous run, they occasionally do so if it compliments the current story.

Also, this example of Word Cruft from Recycled Title (folder:comic books_, but how to simplify it?:

  • In the Comic Book industry, recycled titles are a common method for companies to maintain trademarks, especially Marvel Comics and DC Comics. When a new series is introduced with the same title as an older series, it will share the same title and be known as the next volume of that series, but the numbering may reset at a later date as if it were continuing the numbering of the earlier series, so the series is alternately presented as both a newer series and an older series. This can be played with further when the series changes its title to something else during its run, and later spinoffs and mini-series are introduced based on the different title while the original title resumes. The titles of spinoffs and miniseries may be further recycled, sometimes with little to no connection to the prior story.

Is the first example valid?

As for the second one, how could it be made easier to understand due to the Wall of Text?

From YMMV.Midnight Express:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Seeing Randy Quaid playing a prisoner, now that he really is a fugitive.
    • The premise of a man being sentenced to an extraordinarily long prison term for drug possession, upgraded to "possession with intent to distribute" is basically the daily life for plenty of people in America.

Are these valid? I believe that the second one isn't, but I'm not so sure about the first one.

@8602: That seems valid to me.

@8605: It'd probably be appropriate to move that to Adaptation Relationship Overhaul.

Re: Artistic License โ€“ Physics: There doesn't seem to be a folder dealing with electricity on Artistic License โ€“ Physics, so maybe a new one could be created? On second thought, maybe that example would fit better under Lightning Can Do Anything.

[up][up]Re: Harsher in Hindsight Some explanation on why Randy Quaid is a fugitive might be helpful, otherwise I'm inclined to no due to lack of context. I'm not certain this isn't just "this thing happened, then this other thing happened", but I'll wait on more context before judging. That said, unless the reason Quaid is in trouble is related to why his character was in trouble, I'd call it "this thing happened, then this other thing happened", no different than "this guy died in this movie, them died in real life"

The second part I'd say no to for the simple fact that there's no actual Hindsight anywhere. What prior event is that unintentionally making harsher? As written it sounds deliberate, which makes it not an example.

This was just re-added back in to Baki's section on Characters.Baki The Grappler.

  • Berserk Button: He really hates his father Yujiro because of his dreadful and ruthless actions. He also hates those who harm the people he cares about.

Since this details understandable reasons, should it be removed again?

Move these to MacGuffin Title, since that's a subtrope?

  • The titular Acorn in Acorn Story mysteriously disappears at the very beginning and you spend the rest of the game searching for it.
  • Threads of Fate: Called Dewprism (デュープリズム) in Japan. The entire plot for involves the main characters questing after the [relic] of ultimate power, the Dewprism, capable of granting any wish. It winds up getting transported to another dimension right after the final boss fight, and just short of the opportunity to really begin abusing that sucker's power. C'est la vie.

I'm working on Grezzo 2, and I added this:

  • Misaimed Fandom: The author stated that he made the game mostly out of boredom, only for himself and some friends, and updated it online because he hoped to entertain some more people. He never expected the game to become so popular in Italy and abroad, especially considering the game is mostly based on inside-jokes about Italian trash and pop culture, that are totally incomprehensible by foreigners.

Is this an example of Sleeper Hit (a game expected to remain unpopular that instead becomes incredibly popular) or Misaimed Fandom (a game becoming popular among a fanbase it wasn't directed to)? Or both?

[up]x5 I found these examples while Wiki Walking. I don't know who Randy Quaid is and what he did, nor do I have any inclination to google it, tbh. Besides, the "now that he's [X]" part strikes me as dated. Since the first sub-bullet is both a ZCE and dated, should I cut it anyway?

Related to my unanswered post.

A character can be aware of and play with the "A indicates B" tropes (such as "The butler indicates the killer" or "Glow indicates power"). How are these plays called?

  • Look for A to find B
    • The hero looks for the brightest weapon they can find, seeing how brightness is power. ("Invoked" in Playing with a Trope)
    • The big bad of needs to find the most attractive guy around ... In order to find him, he looks for the sparkles. ("Exploited" in Bishie Sparkle)
  • (Pretend to) be A to fake B
    • [A] recurring con-artist ... tries to pass himself off as a family of one of these to assure wary marks, but he's the same guy each time. ("Exploited" in Inexplicably Identical Individuals)
    • When Cao Xiu questions Zhao's motives for defecting, Zhao ... cut off his hair as a pledge. Zhao's defection was fake, though[.] ("Subverted" in Important Haircut)

From Ghetto Name:

  • One of the characters in NW by Zadie Smith is a black lawyer called Natalie. Her parents named her Keisha, but she didn't think that it sounded very professional.

Does "Keisha" count under the trope?

A few more examples from Hellboy (2019).

Does the following count as a notable Aversion?:

  • Broken Masquerade: Unsurprisingly averted. Unlike in the original movies, Hellboy's existence is no secret, and although his sudden appearance may be cause for some alarm among the populace, it is because of his Doom Magnet and Destructive Savior tendencies rather than any shock about coming face to face with a supernatural creature.

These examples are comparing the film to the previous Hellboy adaptations, shouldn't these tropes be instead comparing it to the original source material. Also do both examples provide enough context:

  • Darker and Edgier: The movie has a fairly hard R-rating, with plenty of gratuitous gore and swearing, in comparison to the previous two PG-13 films.
  • Denser and Wackier: Del Torro's takes on the subject were plenty goofy already, but this film really has a blast revelling in the sheer ridiculousness of its plot and characters.

Can seme & uke be used outside of yaoi and yuri based works?

naturalironist from The Information Superhighway Since: Jul, 2016 Relationship Status: TV Tropes ruined my love life

[up][up][up] Might be a downplayed example. Keisha isn't as elaborate as a lot of the names listed under Ghetto Name, but it is associated with African-Americans. The fact that she sees stigma associated with it (and changes her name to seem professional) suggests that the trope is in use.

[up] I think the work has to have some kind of connection to yaoi. If it's an OEL Manga that's basically yaoi, sure. If it's a work that isn't really yaoi but uses some anime tropes or homages to the genre, sure. Otherwise, I don't think so.
