Friday Night Funkin' Online VS is a collection of songs from Friday Night Funkin' Game Mods that, as the title suggests, modifies the engine to allow for online versus matches between two players without any need for outside programs. The mod boasts over 90 songs from the various mods it contains, the ability to play as any character from the base game, and a character creator to add to the playable roster.

The most enticing part of the mod for most, however, is the addition of Challenges. Challenges are entirely original, limited-time songs released without any set schedule that pit you against an opponent not found in the base game, generally including new mechanics and an extra unlockable character if the song is beaten on Hard mode. Additionally, after beating Hard, the new "Fucked" difficulty is unlocked, which has the reward of another character if beaten.

The mod can be downloaded on GameBanana here.

Challenges

Tropes applying to Online VS:

  • Acceptable Breaks from Canon:
  • Adaptational Context Change: Two in "Roadkill," which is an adaptation of Tankmen 2's climax:
    • Steve's "You should've used the Pythagorean Theorem, bitch" line is changed to be said after he sinks his knife into the second Sportsman. The knife itself is also tossed up from a distance instead of Steve closing in on the tank.
    • As Steve never lays off the wheel during the song unlike the original animation, he gets the honor of shooting the first Sportsman in Tankman's place and doing the pelvic thrusts.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The FBI agents were already villains in the original Alien Hominid, where they bullied kids and tried to kill the titular hero for simply being an alien, but in "Anywhere, USA", they go as far as to kidnap someone's girlfriend simply because they're not human.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Tord ultimately fails to hit anything with his rockets before his Humongus Mecha gets destroyed in the end of Challeng-Edd's Fucked difficulty, whereas in "The End: Part 2" he manages to destroy Edd's house, injure Tom, and kill Jon.
    • The FBI agents fail get a single hit on Alien Hominid or Boyfriend in "Anywhere, USA".
  • Anti-Frustration Features: A network connection is not required to play the challenges. Playing the challenges also counts for gaining rank xp.
  • Badass Normal: Unlike Hank, Sportsman, and Tord, Edd, Eduardo, the Uberkids, and Alien Hominid have no gimmicks in their songs whatsoever. This is justified for Edd since he's genuinely friendly, and he even teams up with Boyfriend during the Hostile Show Takeover.
  • Beat:
    • In "Accelerant", there's a brief pause after Tricky's segment, where Hank just shoots him off the speakers.
    • In "Unloaded", Pico shoots a rope holding a bus, sending careening towards one of the Uberkids.
    • In "Challeng-Edd"'s Fucked difficulty, Boyfriend sings a line from "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows", causing Tord to send him a Death Glare before firing rockets at him and Edd.
  • Berserk Button: On "Challeng-Edd"’s Fucked section against Tord, Boyfriend proceeds to sing "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows", which is canonically a song that makes him angry. Unsurprisingly, that escalates the situation as he begins firing rockets.
  • Blood Knight: Pico's having the time of his life shooting the Uberkids as he breakdances.
  • Cathartic Scream: Hank is mostly okay with being bested... after he takes off his mask to flash his metal jaw and bellow angrily at Boyfriend.
  • Car Fu: Pico kills an Uberkid by snapping a rope holding a bus in place in "Unloaded", just like in the original Pico's Unloaded.
  • Character Customization: The mod includes a character creator, which allows you to import a custom character to use in online challenges. You need to be at a certain rank to actually use the custom character however.
  • Character Select Forcing: As the animations and voices wouldn't have worked otherwise, all the Challenges have you play as a specific character. "Unloaded" makes you play as Pico, and "Roadkill" has you play as Tankman. The rest of the challenges have you play as Boyfriend.
  • Continuing is Painful: You have to start the challenges over from the beginning if you fail at any point in them, which can be a problem with "Challeng-Edd" and "Anywhere, USA" on the Fucked difficulty.
  • Death by Adaptation: The sniper and Skittles are both seen in the states they were in throughout Tankmen 2 in "Roadkill"; however, while they survived in the original animation, the sniper appears to have succumbed to blood loss while Skittles falls out of his watchtower and shatters his face on the Sportsmen's tank.
  • Damsel in Distress: During the Fucked difficulty of "Anywhere, USA", Girlfriend and her speakers are carried away by the FBI, and ends up getting tied to the Install Ball's suit at the end of the first phase.
  • Defeat Means Playable: Hank, an Uberkid, Edd, and Alien Hominid are unlocked when their respective Challenge is beaten in Hard mode. Additionally, Tord is the character unlocked for beating "Challeng-Edd" on Fucked. Subverted with Eduardo and Tricky and the Install Ball, as while they are fought, they can't be unlocked and are not available for online matches.
  • Developer's Foresight:
    • Failing the second half of "Challeng-Edd" while Edd's singing or was the last person to sing will result in him showing up on the game over screen instead of Boyfriend.
    • Due to Alien Hominid always moving whenever he sings in "Anywhere, USA", stationary sprites for him were made specifically for online matches.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: "Accelerant" is the only Challenge song to be released solo and have a gimmick on the Hard difficulty; all Challenges after that are released in pairs of two and only have gimmicks on the Fucked difficulty.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • Edd joins Boyfriend during the halfway point of "Challeng-Edd" following the song's Hostile Show Takeover.
    • Alien Hominid assists Boyfriend in fighting the Install Ball in "Anywhere, USA"'s Fucked difficulty, by shooting at them while Boyfriend sings.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • During "Challeng-Edd"'s Fucked difficulty, you can see a silhouette of Tord parachuting into the backyard. In addition, Tom won't walk out of the house to join Matt. At the song's halfway point, the ground will shake and Tordbot will rise in the background, with Tom running into the scene holding Tord's wanted poster shortly after.
    • An early sign of things being different for the Fucked difficulty of "Anywhere, USA" is when Girlfriend, with her speakers in tow, get carried away by an FBI agent during the car sequence, and she doesn't show up again until the big reveal.
  • Friendly Enemy:
    • Unlike the rest of the opponents (except presumably Alien Hominid), Edd is rather friendly; his animations show him with a big smile, he lacks any gimmicks, and even teams up with Boyfriend during the second half of "Challeng-Edd".
    • This also seems to be the case for Alien Hominid in "Anywhere, USA", as he makes no attempt to shoot at Boyfriend and even poses with him at the end of the song. In Fucked difficulty, they even team up to fight off the Install Ball as it holds Girlfriend hostage.
  • Funny Background Event:
    • After Tricky is shot off the speakers in "Accelerant", on any difficulty other than Fucked, various grunts and AAHW agents will pop out from behind the speakers to try and observe the battle, only to be almost immediately shot by Sanford and Deimos. Girlfriend will also eventually walk onscreen with a hot dog in hand and continue swaying to the beat.
    • During "Unloaded", Nene and Darnell replace Girlfriend on the speakers, respectively stabbing and torching a number of Uberkids that try to approach.
    • During "Challeng-Edd", Matt and, if not playing on Fucked, Tom, will walk out of the house and bop to the beat, and even react to Eduardo's introduction.
  • Harder Than Hard: The Challenges include a "Fucked" difficulty that increases the number of notes and enhances the song's mechanics (if there are any). "Challeng-Edd" in particular becomes a completely different song at the halfway point previously established in Hard difficulty, and the length of "Anywhere, USA" is practically doubled, due to the surprise Boss Battle after the normal section of the song.
  • Hard Mode Perks:
    • Playing and completing the Challenge songs on Hard or Fucked unlocks new characters to play as: Hank and his Mag Agent form for "Accelerant", an Uberkid, Nene, and Darnell for "Unloaded", Edd and Tord for "Challeng-Edd", Alien Hominid and a Fat Kid for "Anywhere, USA", and Sportsman and Steve for "Roadkill".
    • Unlike "Unloaded" and "Accelerant", "Challeng-Edd"'s Fucked difficulty completely changes the song after the half-way point, with Eduardo being replaced by Tord. "Anywhere USA" does the same thing by adding an additional sequence against the Install Ball.
    • "Anywhere, USA" is also expanded in Fucked difficulty after it's supposed to end, bringing in a Boss Battle that Boyfriend and Alien Hominid have to team up against.
  • Interesting Situation Duel: "Roadkill" has the Tankmen and the Sportmen rap battling while driving tanks, while "Anywhere, USA" has Boyfriend and Alien Hominid rapping while walking through the city, eventually getting into a car.
  • The Many Deaths of You:
    • Missing even one bullet note in "Accelerant" on Fucked (or losing the last of your health from one on Hard) will result in Boyfriend getting shot in the head.
    • Failing "Unloaded" will result in an Uberkid punching Pico's lights out.
    • Failing Challeng-Edd while Edd's singing (whether by missing too many notes or missing one of Tord's missiles) will have him subject to X-Ray of Pain.
    • Failing "Anywhere, USA" will have Boyfriend blueballed like usual, but facing right. The Install Ball's part instead uses the standard death animation from the base game.
    • Failing "Roadkill" will have Sports Guy throw a knife into Tankman's head.
  • Mooks: The Uberkids challenge Pico en mass during "Unloaded", with all of them (with the exception of the last one) dying in a single hit to either Pico's bullets, Nene's knife, or Darnell's spray can.
  • Mythology Gag: Has its own page in regards to the Challenges.
  • One-Hit Kill:
    • Hank's bullet notes and Tricky's fire notes in "Accelerant" become this on "Fucked" Difficulty, with the latter turning to halo notes to match. "Challeng-Edd" also gets these on Fucked in the form of Tord's rocket notes. "Roadkill" also adds chain-notes fired by the Sporstmen on "Fucked" Difficulty, which consists of two notes chained together, both of which need to be pressed at the same time.
    • Like the animation it was based on, all of the Uberkids in "Unloaded" die in a single hit, mostly from Pico's guns.
  • Promoted to Playable: All of the opponents from the base game are playable characters in online matches. Pico specifically is also the player character during "Unloaded", "Challeng-Edd" has the player play as both Edd and Boyfriend during the Hostile Show Takeover, and Tankman is the playable character of "Roadkill".
  • Sore Loser: Eduardo punches Jon in the face for no real reason after losing in "Challeng-Edd"'s Hard difficulty.
Jon: OW! I didn't even say anyth-
    Eduardo: SHUT UP.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Edd's house doesn't get destroyed in "Challeng-Edd", unlike in "The End". Jon could arguably also be a case of this given the events of the original episode.
  • Unlockable Content: Different characters are unlocked if the player manages to beat the Challenges on Hard and Fucked.
    • Beating "Accelerant" on Hard unlocks Hank, while beating it on Fucked unlocks his Mag appearance.
    • Beating "Unloaded" on Hard unlocks an Uberkid, while beating it on Fucked unlocks both Nene and Darnell.
    • Beating "Challeng-Edd" on Hard unlocks Edd, while beating it on Fucked unlocks Tord.
    • Beating "Anywhere, USA" on Hard unlocks Alien Hominid, while beating it on Fucked unlocks a Fat Kid.
    • Beating "Roadkill" on Hard unlocks Sportsman, while beating it on Fucked unlocks Steve.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The last Uberkid standing towards the end of "Unloaded" is far angrier than any of his brethren, and is the only one to survive multiple verses (mainly because Pico ran out of ammo).
  • Walking Spoiler:
    • Everything about Tord here is a massive spoiler, since he steals the show of "Challeng-Edd"'s Fucked difficulty with his robot in the second half.
    • This also applies to the surprise Boss Battle of "Anywhere, USA"'s Fucked difficulty, with the Install Ball coming to attack the two.
  • We Have Reserves: By virtue of being genetic clones, there are tons of Uberkids that appear in "Unloaded". Pico continuously shoots down whichever one he is currently fighting for the first half of the song, only for another one to pick up the mic and continue where the last one left off, on top of the 40 that he kills off during his solo and the ones being offed by Nene and Darnell in the background.
  • Wham Shot:
    • "Challeng-Edd"'s Fucked Difficulty is set up to be the same as on Hard, like the other Challenge songs. However, once the halfway point hits, the ground will shake and the shot will pan out to reveal Tordbot rising up from behind the house.
Tord: I'm UNSTOPPABLE! Ha ha ha ha!
    • "Anywhere, USA"'s Fucked Difficulty does the same thing, but when Boyfriend and Alien Hominid reach the docks like on Hard Mode, the Install Ball lands behind them, with Girlfriend strapped to its suit.
