Title From: Dirty Dancing (1987)

Julian bullies Kevin into going to a prostitute to prove he's not gay, leaving Kevin traumatised, especially as he learns it was orchestrated by his father. Betty fights against her repressive parents after the peep show with Archie, who tries to help Kevin.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Everyone's, but most of all Julian's, whose father forced him to be raped by a prostitute when he was 16.
    • Kevin's dad is homophobic to the extent that he sets up Kevin being raped like Julian was. Luckily for Kevin, Archie gets Kevin before he's harmed.
    • Alice is a misogynist who constantly shames Betty.
    • Frank is homophobic. He also graphically describes 16-year-old Betty's body to Archie. Downplayed, though, in that while Archie seems to disagree with his views, he's not abusing his nephew.
    • Played for laughs with Veronica complaining that her having her allowance cut off and forced to get a job "is literally child abuse."
  • Blaming the Victim: Alice does this to Betty after she slaps a guy named Troy who sexually harasses her.
  • Blowing a Raspberry: Alice does one towards Betty at the climax, despite supposedly being old enough to know better.
  • Captain Oblivious: Despite Frank, Kevin and Julian practically spelling it out to him, Archie doesn’t understand that Kevin is gay.
  • Commonality Connection: Clay and Veronica bond over their mutual love of film; Clay wants to be a director and study filmmaking at university. They work together to bring business to the Babylonium theatre and shoot a commercial to help.
  • Evil Uncle: Frank is homophobic and potentially a sexual predator in the 1955 world, as opposed to him being a Nice Guy like his brother and nephew in the main world.
  • Gayngst: Once again the only type of storyline Kevin is afforded. Julian suspects that Kevin is gay and tries to harass him into being outed. It's later revealed that Tom Keller asked Julian to suggest that Kevin see a prostitute.
  • Hope Spot: Jughead gets the forgiveness of Brad Rayberry, who decides to try to get The Jupiter Journals published and finds a way to stay in school and write comics, with Rayberry threatening to sue the school. What’s more, Jughead may live with him. So naturally, Rayberry gets a visit from a milkman…
  • Love-Obstructing Parents: After getting caught stripping for each other, Archie and Betty are banned from seeing each other. They still see each other anyway and Archie is even on American Grandstand, so they’re not good at enforcing sad ban.
  • Panty Shot: Betty does an epic one, getting kicked off the show.
  • Professional Sex Ed:
    • Julian being raped at 16, which his father set up.
    • Kevin's dad tries to set this up too, but it's luckily foiled by Archie saving Kevin.
  • Rape as Backstory: Julian.
  • Riches to Rags: Not extreme yet, but for her part in the Archie/Betty drama, Veronica's parents cut off her allowance and force her to get an actual job. She still gets to live in the Pembrooke with Smithers as her butler of sorts. She just can't refurbish any potential boyfriends' train cars with Egyptian cotton anymore.
  • Shout-Out: Veronica's mini-film to promote the theater is clearly based on Nicole Kidman's ads for AMC Theaters.
  • Show Within a Show: American Grandstand, Alice and Hal’s dance show (sponsored by Blossom Maple Syrup).
  • Slut-Shaming: Alice treats Betty like this, as does Cheryl.
  • Unexpected Virgin: Kevin is surprised to learn that Archie is a virgin. And then angry that Kevin is the only one being singled out for not having had sex.
