Fanfic / Hell Sweet Hell

Go To

Hell Sweet Hell is a crossover between My Hero Academia and Helltaker written by Yesmar 1020 on Archive of Our Own.

Izuku Midoriya had committed a lifetime of sins. This fact surprised those who first met him, as he appeared to be a living saint. But he had lied, idolized a man as a god early in his life, and even had premarital sex. How scandalous. Of course, all sins are met with punishment, and his was an eternity in Hell… making sure the place ran properly. This is the story of how he became the greatest hero from a certain point of view.

This is the synopsis for the original fic, which can be accessed here. Despite its success, the author decided to rewrite the entire story when they decided that Izuku had it too easy with his journey through Hell. The remake, which can be accessed here, is designed as a Fix Fic with a Darker and Edgier tone to better reflect how Izuku's experience in Hell would really affect him.

This fanfic contains examples of:

    Hell Sweet Hell: The Untouched
  • Adaptational Badass: Izuku learns to channel his Will Power into a variety of abilities under Justice's tutelage instead of gaining One for All.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Lucifer and Justice used to be a couple before the whole incident with Beelzebub occurred.
  • Age Lift: Izuku and his fellow UA students are aged up to university students to make it easier for the author to write sex scenes between Izuku and his harem of demon ladies.
  • All-Loving Hero: Izuku is willing to treat his girlfriends like regular people instead of terrifying demons and even manages to talk Lucifer into letting go of her grudge towards Adam.
  • All Myths Are True:
    • Lucifer states that the Hell they reside in isn't the only one in existence because it would be impossible for a single afterlife to handle all the souls of the human population that died.
Lucifer: Of course there is! You think we could handle all the traffic of the entire human race? It’s hard enough with one religion, let alone two.
    • The events of Inferno are confirmed to have actually occurred in-universe, specifically, during Beelzebub's short reign over Hell
  • The Atoner: Beelzebub regrets betraying Lucifer just because she wanted more and is painfully aware that the chances of Lucifer ever forgiving her for such a transgression are slim to none.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Izuku falls in love with Lucifer because she supported his dream of becoming a hero when no one else would.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Izuku somehow manages to tame Cerberus with some hair combing for each of the triplets and giving them names, much to the disbelief of Lucifer and Pandemonica.
  • Black Comedy: Izuku listens to "Flight of the Bumblebee" in an attempt to ignore the carnage he and his companions are going through as they fight their way to Charon's boathouse in the circle of Wrath. It instead makes the situation hilarious by unintentionally encapsulating how their current experience feels like.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Judgement qualifies as this with her dramatic boastfulness and her not-so-secret love for everything cute and adorable.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Justice's blindness stems from her burning her eyes out with her abilities as High Prosecutor while she fought Beelzebub.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In Heresy, Izuku runs into a damned soul trapped in a coffin that tells him "Lo, Man returns to Earth!" before disintegrating. Guess what happens next?
  • Chick Magnet: Somehow, Izuku has managed to woo all of the demon girls with nothing but his own kindness and morals.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: The sinners in the second ditch of the Eighth Circle take it so far that Justice has to cover Izuku's ears to spare him from their vulgarities.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Lucifer explicitly tells Izuku that Hell's morality system is essentially an inverted version of human morals.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Izuku very nearly hits it when he finds the tree that had been growing from his despair in chapter 7. It take Lucifer and the others to lift his spirits with a You Are Better Than You Think speech highlighting how he has changed their lives for the better just by ending up in Hell in the first place.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Justice flashes Izuku to get him to stop overexerting himself during one of their combat training sessions
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • As dedicated as Justice is to her job of punishing those who committed violent acts in life, she's not fond of punishing the souls of those who committed suicide due to the fact that most who did so had hit the Despair Event Horizon and wanted to end their pain. She also gives the group explicit orders to treat the trees made from the souls of the suicidal with utmost respect as a Due to the Dead for the souls trapped in the Suicide Forest's trees.
    • Lucifer mentions to the group that most demons who first work in Fraud often puke when they whiff the absolutely disgusting stench from the second ditch after Izuku vomits from a single whiff, and who'd blame them?
    • Izuku is not happy when Judgement tries to punish Eri for killing her father on accident even though Eri had already suffered enough at the hands of Overhaul and chews her out on that.
    • Lucifer also mentions her distaste for cults when she enters Izuku's room and sees all of his hero-related memorabilia.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Lucifer may be the devil herself, but she regards her brother Jesus Christ as one of the few good things to ever come out of humanity
  • Funbag Airbag: Izuku runs into Azazel's breasts by accident while running in fright from the damned souls in Heresy.
  • The Gadfly:
    • As per canon, Zdrada enjoys getting on everyone else's nerves for shiggles.
    • Lucifer and Pandemonica jokingly tease Izuku on being a Chick Magnet and his relationship with the demon girls quite often in the early chapters
Pandemonica: There. That wasn’t so hard, was it? Judging by your reaction, I’d say you’re concerned about women swarming you and clamoring for your attention. After all, who could resist such a scrumptious snack?
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Beelzebub's quite fine with spending her days alone in the Abyss and going crazy from the loneliness ever since she got banished there
  • Happily Adopted: Eri is taken in as Izuku's adopted daughter after he rescues her in Fraud.
  • Headdesk: Lucifer ends up slamming her head onto her desk multiple times during Izuku's trip through Hell, mainly due to things going in ways that she never expected them to go.
  • Heroic Willpower: Izuku's willpower is so great that he can No-Sell Hell's temptations and even dampen the innate sinful tendencies of demons, as Pandemonica notes in chapter 3. In fact, it's strong enough for him to recover from the injuries inflicted onto him by the Sin Machine and even obliterate it!
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Gender inverted with Izuku and Lucifer thanks to Izuku's low self-steem form all the bullying and abuse heaped onto him in his life.
  • The Incorruptible: Izuku's soul is so pure that even Justice has to avert her eyes from how bright it is while Judgement gets herself flashbanged by his purity.
  • In Mysterious Ways: Lucifer name-drops this trope as she notes that God does things in ways that no one can ever predict or understand.
  • The Internet: Malina makes a deal with Lucifer to stop her alcoholism in exchange for getting Hell the Internet connection it desperately needs. After Lucifer informs Heaven of that plan, God then decides to grant Hell internet in exchange for sending Azazel down there to observe it.
  • Jack of All Trades: Izuku has enough Will for him to be good at channeling all three attributes of Will Power without specializing in any of them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Malina initially comes of as a sour and rude alcoholic before revealing herself to be not so bad under her abrasive exterior.
  • Jizzed in My Pants: Izuku unknowingly inflicts this on Modeus with his simple gestures of kindness in chapter 4.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: All of the demon girls (and Azazel) are much older than Izuku by millennia, though it's implied that Izuku's awakening might be able to solve this problem later down the line.
  • Meaningful Name: Martyr!Izuku calls his other self "Untouched" due to the fact that he literally went To Hell and Back without a scratch on him.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Jesus Christ and Lucifer are siblings by having God as their dad.
  • Rousing Speech: Izuku makes a Will-enhanced speech to rally the UA applicants against the robotic faux Villains during the entrance exam when the Zero-Pointer shows up, restoring the morale of the students and spurring them into a Zerg Rush against the robot horde.
Izuku: Heroes! Why are you running? Did you make it all this way just to bow your heads at the first sign of danger? You wanted to be heroes, you wanted it so badly, you came all the way here, all the way to UA! You want to be heroes? Then act like it! Stand up! Fight on! Save those who cannot save themselves! Fight the villains, save the day! And most importantly… Go beyond! PLUS ULTRA!
  • Shout-Out:
    • Izuku references "Spooky Scary Skeletons" when describing the dancing skeletons on the other side of the puzzle in the second ring of Hell after making it through said puzzle.
Chapter 2: He faced the puzzle and saw the dancing skeletons on the other side, who looked spooky and scary. He was sure that they were only misunderstood, and he only wanted to socialize with them, but at the same time he didn’t think he should.
    • Charon likes to wear silk suits much like his Percy Jackson and the Olympians counterpart does if Lucifer's threat to get him in line is any indication.
    • Lucifer also inadvertently quotes Gurren Lagann in her conversation with Izuku in Violence.
    • Justice fires off a Hadouken before she accidentally channels a Rasengan that wrecks the room she and Izuku are in during their Will Power training session.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Lucifer is directly compared to All Might in terms of height by Izuku and is quite beautiful herself.
  • Take Me Instead: Izuku offers to take Eri's punishment himself when Judgement attempts to punish her for the Accidental Murder of her father.
  • Take That!:
    • Greed essentially serves as one for nearly every major company, that, according to Lucifer, earned their riches honestly before succumbing to greed in their pursuit for profits. In-universe examples include Bethesda Softworks, Disney, Electronic Arts, and the South Sea Company.
    • The blocky golden penis statue that Cerberus retrieves was made by the in-universe Minecraft community as a fuck-you towards Microsoft for turning their beloved game into a mere cash cow ever since it bought out Mojang.
  • True Love Is a Kink: Invoked by Lucifer on Modeus to get her to stop thinking about sex all the time.
Lucifer: Modeus, you consider romance to be perverted, yes?
    Modeus: Yes.
Lucifer: And if something is considered perverted, there is a guarantee that someone perverted likes it and calls it their kink, correct?
    Modeus: Yup.
Lucifer: If something is called a kink, then logically it is sexual.
Modeus: That makes sense to me.
Lucifer: Then romance is your kink, which means you are thinking about sex.
    Modeus: I-I, y-you… meanie!
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Pretty much Lampshaded by Lucifer in chapter 4.
Chapter 4: Oh, sweet baby Jesus. He was just too sweet and sincere. It was honestly adorable.
  • Values Dissonance: According to Modeus, a "normal" romantic relationship in Hell involves both partners banging and hurting each other, so she is appropriately surprised and confused when Izuku tells her that he and Modeus should first date each other before taking their relationship to second base.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Beelzebub was once one of Lucifer's most trusted lieutenants and dearest companions before her nature as the embodiment of gluttony caused her to overthrow Lucifer as Hell's ruler. Unfortunately, Hell fell into chaos and disrepair by the timeDante made his journey through the afterlife because she lacked the leadership skills necessary to keep its denizens in check, resulting in her subsequent overthrow and exile to the Abyss by Lucifer.
  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 7: Izuku has his own tree of despair growing in Violence from his past experiences.
    • Chapter 8: Izuku channels his Heroic Willpower, breaks the Sin Machine, and fulfills the prophecy that the damned soul in Heresy foretold.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Izuku call's out Judgement's strict devotion to her job when she attempts to judge Eri for her Accidental Murder of her father, only for Judgment to rebuke that she can't go against the rules of her job as High Prosecutor of Hell before Izuku decides to take Eri's punishment in her stead.
Izuku: Judgement-san, what do you think you’re doing?!
    (Beat)
    Izuku: No.
Judgement: Midoriya, I have to. It’s my duty as the High Prosecutor to punish souls—
Izuku: I said no, Judgement-san! Look at her! She’s clearly traumatized enough! I am not letting you hurt her more!
Judgement: As much as it pains me to say this, you are not her father, Midoriya, nor do you have any authority over me. Hand over the girl or I will have no choice but to take her by force.
Izuku: You’re willing to hurt an innocent child? You would hurt a child who has been hurt by the world already? What did she do to deserve such a fate, huh?
Judgement: She killed her father. (Stunned Silence) It was an accident involving her quirk, but it was still enough to qualify as a sin in the eyes of the Lord. And there is nothing I can do to not punish her, Midoriya. To deny my duty would be the same as denying my existence. I would burst into hell flame and burn to ash, and the next High Prosecutor would tell you the same thing. Hand over the girl.
    Izuku: No.
Judgement: This is not a fight you will win, Midoriya. I could destroy you before you could blink. Do us both a favor and hand over the girl.
    (Beat)
    Izuku: I’ll do it.
    Judgement: What?
Izuku: I’ll do it. You need someone to punish? I’ll take her punishment.
Judgement: Are you sure you want to do this?
Izuku: I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Lucifer and the demon girls reassure Izuku that he is not as worthless as he believes he is after he discovers the tree growing from the despair he hid inside of him.
Lucifer: Izuku Midoriya. Do not be afraid.
    Izuku: ...Lucifer-san?
Lucifer: Izuku Midoriya, you are not useless. You have proven that in the short time you have spent here in Hell.
    Izuku: You’re lying.
Lucifer: The Lord of Lies was Belial, not me. What reason would I have to lie to you?
Lucifer: Midoriya. Look at me. (Beat) I said look at me, Izuku Midoriya! You believe you are useless? If you were truly useless, none of us would be here. I would not be having this conversation with you right now. Pande would be passed out on her desk, Modeus would still be forever wandering the circle of Lust, Cerberus would not have a Master, Malina would be testing the limits of demonic alcohol resistance and burying herself in her games, Zdrada would be testing the patience of everyone in the same circle as her, and Justice would still be tending to the forest with no one to talk to. You have touched so many lives, Midoriya. And if the human world despises you, well, know that you are welcomed here in Hell.
Justice: Lucy’s right, Midoriya. I can tell you myself that you seem pretty awesome, even if you have some self-esteem issues. Everyone has flaws, but they also have really good qualities too! And if the people on Earth can’t see the good you bring to the world? Their loss.
Cerberus: Master is good! We would miss Master a lot if you died! Please don’t leave us!
Zdraza: Heh. You’ve got me all emotional, kid. I’m not really good at this kinda stuff, but you’ve really grown on me in the short time we’ve been together.
Malina: I need someone besides my sister to be around and to play games with. Plus, when I’m around you, I don’t want to drink.
Modeus: Who’s going to hold my hand and give me hugs and genuinely compliment me if you’re gone?
Azazel: I’d still like to compare notes with you, Midoriya.
Pandemonica: Your coffee is the best I’ve ever had. It’d be a shame to lose it to a tree.
    Izuku: Girls...
Lucifer: You see? There are people that care about you. So don’t throw your life away because you have been wrongly told that you are worthless. You are worth so much more than you realize, and even if you don’t believe in yourself, believe in those that believe in you.
    • Izuku returns the favor in Chapter 9 when Lucifer has her own bout of despair and self-loathing, citing how she helped him throughout his journey through Hell
Izuku: I’m not leaving without you, Lucifer-san.
Lucifer: Why would you want to leave with me? I’m the Devil. Satan, the Arch-Traitor, the Beast. Believe me, you are much better off forgetting about me and the others. Just take the girl and the key and go.
Izuku: Not without the person who believed in me when no one else would. In the Purgatory Forest, it may have been Pandemonica-san who held my hand but it was your voice that guided me through. It was you who listened to what I had to say without a word of complaint, it was you who challenged me to prove to you that I could be a hero. In the Hall of Pheromones too! It was not Pandemonica-san or Modeus-san who talked to me as I walked among the gas, it was you. It was you that entrusted me with finding Cerberus, and it was because of you that I found them. It was you who entrusted me with finding Malina-san, and Zdrada-san. In the Catacombs of Heresy, it was you who brought me out of my panic, who reassured me and calmed me. And in the Suicide Forest of Violence, it was you who saved me.
    Lucifer: Midoriya…
Izuku: You’re hurting, Lucifer-san, and I’m sorry that I was the cause of that, but I’m not going to let you suffer in silence like I did. You helped me when I was at my lowest, and believed in me when even I didn’t believe in myself. So Lucifer, I’m asking you to take your own advice and believe in those who believe in you! I believe in you, Lucifer-san! A-And I’m not leaving Hell until you’re by my side! I have so much I want to show you back home, and I’m sure my mother will love you as much as I do!
  • You Remind Me of X: Izuku ends up reminding Lucifer of Adam thanks to the sheer amount of Will he emits in Chapter 8, which also reminds her of her grudge towards him for taking her place as God's most precious one despite doing absolutely nothing to deserve it.

    Hell Sweet Hell (rewrite)
  • Adaptational Jerkass: The demons are not nearly as nice towards Izuku as in The Untouched.
    • Pandemonica is a bit crankier and isn't as warm towards Izuku from the get-go, maintaining a more professional attitude around him.
    • Zdrada does not warm up to Izuku as quickly as she did in The Untouched, mocking his belief in heroes and rebuffing his attempts to help resolve the issues she and Malina have with each other.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Pandemonica curses Modeus to be unable to enjoy sex after she curses Izuku with a tongue-kiss, much to Modeus' chagrin.
  • Cool Old Guy: Vergil, the owner of the coffee shop that Izuku works at, is nothing but a Nice Guy who nonetheless presents Izuku with some honest advice about his dream of being a hero.
  • Darker and Edgier: Izuku's journey through Hell isn't as smooth compared to the events of The Untouched considering that he ends up receiving a curse from Modeus when she kisses him.
  • Framing Device: The chapter titles are the questions that Untouched!Izuku asks Martyr!Izuku in their conversation, with the chapter summaries being the responses that Martyr!Izuku gives to Untouched!Izuku's queries.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Izuku notes that something will happen to him in Gluttony when the damned souls trapped there stop their squealing thanks to his experience as a bullying victim. Sure enough, he ends up meeting Cerberus when he reunites with Pandemonica and Modeus.
  • Madness Mantra: Plutus has taken to constantly screaming his infamous "Pape Satàn, pape Satàn aleppe" line at the top of his lungs ever since people stopped worshipping him since the times of ancient Greece.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, there once was an angel from Heaven who stuffed a bunch of holy hand grenades up their butt while visiting Hell, getting them booted out of Dis' security checkpoint.
  • Sincerity Mode: Vergil takes his time to tell Izuku about his own experiences on trying to be a hero so that he can potentially give up on his dream for his own safety and well-being.
Vergil: Kid, did I ever tell you that when I was your age, I wanted to be a hero too?
Izuku: No, you didn’t. What stopped you?
Vergil: Nothing could. I wanted to be a hero so badly. Everyone I knew told me that I couldn’t do it, that my quirk was too weak to be used in heroics. But I didn’t listen. I trained at every opportunity I had, wanting to prove everyone wrong, and myself right. I spent hours training at gyms, meeting with coaches, and talking with the other lifters for tips on bodybuilding. When I wasn’t at the gym, I was training at home, honing my mind for the U.A. entrance exam.
Izuku: You wanted to go to U.A.?
Vergil: Yes, my boy. My father, the owner of this coffee shop before me, told me I couldn’t do it. That I should think realistically. I didn’t listen and kept training and training until the faithful day came. I walked into U.A. and used every fiber of my being to help with the exam. (...) I didn’t pass. I gave it everything I had, and it still wasn’t enough. I failed miserably, kid. That night I walked home, feeling lower than the dirt I walked upon. When I arrived home, my father welcomed me with open arms and a cup of hot decaf. Taught me everything I know about coffee making today, and he never once mentioned the exam that entire night. (...) Son, my point is that it’s important that you think realistically about your choices. I know this is hard to hear, but I really don’t think your hero dream is going to work out. I just don’t want you to get hurt trying to be a hero, okay? I’m sorry I had to do that. But I want the best for you, and sometimes that, unfortunately, doesn’t align with what you want.
  • Take That!: In addition to the Golden Penor that showed up in The Untouched, Greed features Jeff Bezos getting squashed by a car-sized bag of riches while he's busy filling his own and Todd Howard yelling "It just works!" as jabs at their questionable business practices.
  • You Remind Me of X: Zdrada reminds Izuku of Bakugou with her abrasive, rude mannerisms.
