SOUL

    SOUL In General
  • Adaptational Heroism: Compare how the parallel versions of Hibiki, Tsubasa and Chris were initially enemies to their main selves in XDU, while here they're the supportive twin sisters to the trio.
  • Adaptational Nice Girl: In comparison to the parallel characters.
  • Badass Normal: Outside of their Relic Battle Modes, they provide support to the wielders in battle. They're all skilled at hand-to-hand combat.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Rui, Maia and Chris all act like this towards Hibiki, Tsubasa and Shuri.
  • Expy: The three twins are not just based on their parallel selves, but are also based in personality on existing characters from other series. This gradually went more into broader Shout Outs as the story went on and the author started experiencing other series.
    • Rui's being the rough and standoffish older sibling with a foul mouth and solo mindset (before finding a group of companions), yet also having a good heart and being an excellent chef makes her one to Ragna the Bloodedge and Velvet Crowe. Later on, her impulsive actions are based on Shinn Asuka.
    • Maia's playful and poking attitude (with a bit of perversion for her fellow girls), while knowing when to get serious is inspired by Chelsea. Later on, she started emulating other similarly carefree, but experienced characters such as Kyoko Sakura, Kaname Date and Satoru Gojo.
    • Shuri's nice tendencies, as well as being a natural leader without much experience (that uses a sniper rifle) makes her like Ruby Rose. Her being thrust into all of this with a mysterious power and growing as a person is inspired by Hyde Kido and Kira Yamato.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Symphogear Outer Unit Lineup
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Rui's name means "reverb."
    • Maia's name means "soar."
    • Shuri's name means "kind."
  • Odd Friendship: A Jerk with a Heart of Gold, a Gadfly and a former Shrinking Violet. And this isn't taking into account the other characters they hang out with.
  • Power Trio:
    • Freudian Trio: While Shuri is the Superego, Rui and Maia trade Id and Ego roles depending on the situation.
    • Nice Mean And In Between: Shuri's nice, Rui's mean, and Maia's the in-between.

    Rui Tachibana

"My sister fucking needs me, Maia. I'm going there, with or without help."
Click to see her in Kagutsuchi: Gungnir Mode
Click to see her with Elekleid
"Being a true hero is about protecting those that can't protect themselves."
The older twin of Hibiki Tachibana. A loner that has a bit of an aggressive streak, but a good heart. Fights with Kagutsuchi, a belt that gives her armored greaves capable of generating fire and electricity.

  • Aloof Big Sister: Subverted. Rui is actually very overprotective of Hibiki.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She actually gets top marks in class, but tends to skip attending every now and then.
  • Character Development: Formerly a loner that preferred taking things on herself, before opening up to others and becoming a powerful team player.
  • Closet Geek: Of a lot of things, though mostly Kamen Rider.
  • Daddy's Girl: Rui and her father love each other very much, which ends up being a source of emotional torment for the girl as she blames herself for him leaving.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Rui does not mince her words.
  • Determinator: If she gets her mind set on something, she will never give up.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Chris calls her "Chuunigure" (combining "Chuunibyou" with "Gure").
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Rui... does not have a good opinion of herself, to say the least.
  • Hot-Blooded: Considering who her sister is, its natural for her when she fights.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She might act cold and standoffish, but underneath that exterior is a heart as golden as her sister.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: She has no filter at all.
  • Not So Above It All: Whenever it comes to Kamen Rider.
  • Playing with Fire: Kagutsuchi can let her use fire to enhance her kicks.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: One of the biggest Kamen Rider fans around, and she's more than capable of kicking ass.
  • Shock and Awe: Kagutsuchi can let her use electricity to enhance her kicks. Later on inherits Starlit's Elekleid, which also uses electricity as a core part of its abilities.
  • Ship Tease: Her interactions with Chris lean toward the romantic.
  • Supreme Chef: Is a really good cook, but she doesn't really see herself as one.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: During the events of the Lost Song arc, TEC does this to save her life.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Rui is skilled enough to defeat a Symphogear-user like Shirabe without using her Relic Battle Mode, relying solely on Kagutsuchi and her own marital arts skills.

    Maia Kazanari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsubasaan.png
"I just saved the day. You can send me presents or cash gifts whenever you want."
Click to see her in Takemikazuchi: Habakiri Mode
"You know, you look better when you smile."
The older twin of Tsubasa Kazanari. A rebellious prankster that's smarter than she seems. Fights with Takemikazuchi, a bladed hoverboard that doubles as a pair of broadswords.

  • A-Cup Angst: She doesn't show jealousy to the other girls' sizes, but she did take quite a hit to her pride when Shirabe called her "cutting board." When Carol transforms into her adult form, Maia throws a small fit.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Playful and chaotic she may be, Maia is far more intelligent when it comes to science related matters compared to the others, not to mention being just as skilled as her sister despite not receiving the same level of training.
  • Child Prodigy: She's quite smart despite what her demeanor may suggest. She graduated from an overseas University around the time she was 15.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: She's always the one to comment on cup sizes, and even ranked swimsuits. She's still a hero, through and through.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: The scar on Maia's left elbow came from it being broken and nearly torn off by Fudou when she tried to stand up for Tsubasa. This proved to be the catalyst for her to leave home and study overseas.
  • Exact Words: Takemiazuchi benefits from this when Maia faces Phara - since Maia views her gear as a hoverboard instead of a blade, it's immune to the effects of sword breaker because Maia doesn't see it as a sword.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Maia's the foolish to Tsubasa's responsible.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys annoying people.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Not to the same extent as Rui, but she comes close.
  • Nice Girl: She's a little bit of a tease, but she's relatively affable.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: In contrast to Rui, Maia doesn't hide her love for pop culture.
  • Sad Clown: Chaotic and funny she may be, deep down she's just as damaged as her sister.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has a jagged scar on her left elbow that she attained when she was only six.

    Shuri Yukine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chrisan.png
"You disobeyed Oneesama's orders. Good job. I wouldn't have been able to protect Oneesama and Elfnein on my own."
Click to see her in Okami: Ichaival Mode
"One day, I want to play for you and everyone else, with Oneesama singing with me."
The younger twin of Chris Yukine. A timid and kindhearted girl. Fights with Okami, sniper rifle that uses explosive rounds and cryokinetic detonators.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's a kind girl most of the time. Piss her off? Look out.
  • Character Development: From quiet and shy bystander to confident leader of SOUL.
  • Death Activated Super Power: Whenever Shuri "dies," the dormant Ignite Module inside her activates. She gets brought back to life, and gains abilities similar to a Berserk Symphogear User for 5 minutes.
  • Healing Factor: Her new abilities grant her this, letting her reattach lost limbs and return lost blood.
  • The Heart: Of the Twin trio.
  • An Ice Person: Okami is capable of firing shots that explode into huge ice chunks, capable of freezing opponents.
  • The Leader: She's the one that directs SOUL, and occasionally the Symphogear wielders.
  • Nice Girl: Being nice is Shuri's default personality.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: In Season 1, Chris (yes, Chris) holds back all of her curses in front of Shuri to be a good big sister. In fact, she actually yells at Rui before she can say "Bitch" in front of Shuri. This eventually gets dropped afterwards presumably due to Chris giving up at how Rui and Maia, Shuri's two closest friends, swear just as much as she does.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Her new powers from the Ignite Module cause her eyes to grow red.
  • Shrinking Violet: At first. She grows out of it.
  • The Strategist: Tends to be the one that guides the others mid-battle.

Others

    Jeanne Roux
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeanne_8.png
"When we get back, I am going to yell at you, so prepare yourself, mon amie."
"We're fighting to change the world and I can't pull the damn trigger to save my life."
A childhood friend of Maria, Kirika and Shirabe, and a former FIS Receptor Child like them. She plays a support role to the trio.

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In XDU, Jeanne lost her sister Mel and left eye to a relic called the Eye of Argus. After stepping up to look after it in her stead, she was isolated to keep it in check. Here, both were taken in the same incident that claimed Serena's life, and following F.I.S.'s dissolution, she joins up with Professor Nastassja and Dr. Ver alongside Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika.
  • Distaff Counterpart: To Ogawa, playing a similar role of support to Maria as he does to Tsubasa. The two eventually become partners when Jeanne joins Sector Two.
  • Doesn't Like Guns: Despite the fact her main weapons are a pair of twin pistols, Jeanne finds herself struggling to actually use them. She eventually gets around this by using rubber bullets.
  • Expy: Part of her personality is inspired by Claudine Saijo.
  • Eye Scream: Lost her left eye in the accident that took Serena and Mel's lives. Her eye socket takes more damage from Ver throwing a Relic at it, though the Relic makes up for it as a new eye.
  • Gratuitous French: She uses French quite frequently in her sentences, though she actually is French.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The first of FIS to do so, and the first to join Sector Two.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Though almost all of her swear words are in French.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Jeanne has no last name in canon. Here she gets the last name Roux.

    Argus' Eye/Aiba
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aiba_x2.png
"Affirmative. I am very friendly."
"Aiba. I like that name."
A Relic Jeanne receives from from Dr. Ver, which is an artificial intelligence that supports Jeanne. Nicknamed "Aiba."

  • Adaptational Intelligence: Argus' Eye was just a normal Relic in canon. Here, it gets its own intelligence.
  • Adaptational Wimp: The original Argus' Eye could summon countless drones, as well as merge with enemies so they wouldn't be able to attack Jeanne. Here, it's just a single flying eyeball that can also give Jeanne the ability to force foes to be unable to harm her if the eye is directly looking at them. Albeit, it more than makes up for this in combat usage over it's informational skills.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Obviously.
  • Transplant: Is more or less Aiba from AI: The Somnium Files in a Symphogear setting.
