Renaldo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/losespookys1.png
Played by: Bernardo Velasco
A horror and gore enthusiast who assembles his friends to form Los Espookys. He is kind and optimistic, but naïve and incompetent with finances.
  • Celibate Hero: He turns down his neighbor Carmencita's offers for sex because horror is his only love. He says that he's locked away his interest in sex and doesn't plan on unlocking it for a very long time.
  • The Face: He's the most passionate member of the group, making him the ideal person to sell Los Espookys' services to clients. When Andrés and Úrsula try to get a job without him, the client finds them off-putting and points out how they need someone who offers better customer service.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Sanguine of the group. He's by far the most personable, positive, and charismatic, being the most adept at charming clients and extremely passionate about what he does. But he can also be too eager to please others and can get so swept up in horror projects that he forgets that the others have their own lives.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Though dressing like a goth, he has a very wholesome demeanor and even keeps a Panini trading card album of the Latin American beauty pageant contestants.
  • The Heart: He's positive and supportive of the others, helping them deal with their personal or emotional issues just by being someone they can lean on. When he's in Los Angeles by himself, Andrés and Úrsula feel increasingly crushed by their own issues because he's not around to tell them that everything will be okay.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: He helps take care of his mother's dog Frutsi, unlike his sister Beatriz who loathes it.
  • Money Dumb: While being the enthaustic leader of the group and the most invested in their jobs, Renaldo is bad at handling the financial side of the business.
  • My Nayme Is: He has to clarify that his name isn't Reynaldo (the more common spelling). He would get teased for having the wrong name as a child. Before he discovered his love of horror, he was always searching for the missing part of his life just like the missing Y in his name.
  • Nervous Tics: He starts chewing on his hair when things aren't going well.
  • Perky Goth: He's a horror fan who dresses like a typical goth, but he is cheerful, kind-hearted and full of enthusiasm.
  • Practically Different Generations: Renaldo is around 31 years old, since he met Andrés when they were both in fourth grade, while his younger sister Beatriz turns 15 in the first episode.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Renaldo is polite and respectful to his mother, though he maintains his independence and doesn't just go along with whatever she says, and he knows what he wants out of life and pursues it with all his heart. His sister Beatriz is rude and bratty but will cave into their mother's demands as soon as she meets any resistance, and she tends to latch onto new dreams with great enthusiasm only to lose interest just as quickly.

Andrecito "Andrés" Valdez

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/losespookys2.png
Played by: Julio Torres
Renaldo's best friend since childhood and the adopted heir to a chocolate empire. While trying to please his unapproachable parents and the future husband they chose for him, he is also haunted by a mysterious demon, and longs to unlock the secrets of his past.
  • Adoption Angst: He finds his adopted parents' opulent lifestyle to be tedious and boring, but he also enjoys not having to work, so he's created a fantasy backstory where his birth parents abandoned him for mysterious purposes.
  • The Antichrist: Throughout the first season he's shown to have strange mystic powers like controlling the tides, hates children, has a mysterious past and was left to be adopted, and is haunted by a demon. Only it turns he was never adopted, and the demon eventually leaves him to self-actualize her career.
  • Can't Take Criticism: When Renaldo says that Andrés' idea to make a bed swallow someone isn't feasible, Andrés says very plainly that he's just going to pretend he never heard the criticism and keep insisting on the idea.
  • Chuunibyou: The Evil Eye type. He takes every opportunity to tell people about his mysterious origins, and claims that when he was adopted Father Francisco warned his parents that there was something dark about him. A flashback to his adoption shows that Father Francisco wasn't even present at the time.
  • Cold Ham: He generally speaks in a fairly neutral tone, even while talking about extremely melodramatic topics. He emphasizes his speech with dramatic hand gestures and moves in a stiff, robotic fashion to make up for it.
  • Color-Coded Elements: His hair is blue (and has been that way since he was a baby) and he wears lots of blue in his wardrobe. He later discovers that he has a water demon called Water's Shadow inside his soul.
  • Doorstop Baby: He was abandoned on the steps of an orphanage as a child. The parents tried to call a nun to the door, but she was too busy watching a telenovela and didn't see who they were.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Melancholic of the group. He's faithful to a fault, both to those who deserve it (Renaldo, Úrsula, Tati) and those who don't (his parents, Juan Carlos). He's also moody, makes impractical suggestions for the group's schemes, has ridiculously high standards, and is overly blunt in his criticisms.
  • Pals with Jesus: The Moon considers him a friend and allows him to visit her. However like most of his relationships it's one sided, as he mostly just asks her for favors while she's enamored of him. The Moon eventually seems to be wising up to his fickle nature by mid season 2, after the Shooting Star he sets her up with has to leave for another 70 years after their first date.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Being abandoned on the doorstep of an orphanage has led to him assuming that something dark and terrible is bound to dramatically overturn his largely uneventful life someday. He's devastated to learn that his adopted parents are actually his birth parents, meaning that he's just some guy who still lives at home at 31.
  • It's All About Me: Is incredibly egocentric, and simultaneously wants to be kept in luxury without having to sacrifice anything, like entering into an Arranged Marriage.
  • No Social Skills: He tells everyone about his mysterious past regards of the circumstances, will immediately tell other people about secret conversations, and moves in a very stiff, dramatic fashion that others find off-putting. When Tati asks him for advice on what she's doing with her life, he tersely gives her some advice, then tells her that she's been consoled so they can move on to a new topic.
  • Parental Abandonment: His birth parents dropped him on the steps of an orphanage as a baby. They changed their minds shortly after, so they adopted him and have kept up the ruse that they're not his birth parents ever since.
  • Parental Neglect: His adopted parents are emotionally distant and care more about marrying him off to seal a financial deal than his own happiness. They also never tell him that they're really his birth parents who abandoned him and changed their minds.
  • Straight Gay: He's a gay man with dramatic tendencies, but he's not particularly campy, styling himself more like a tragic hero from a gothic novel.

Úrsula Fuentes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/losespookys3_5.png
Played by: Cassandra Ciangherotti
A friend of Renaldo. She is smart, resourceful and more down-to-earth than the other members of Los Espookys; however, she struggles with her job as a dental hygienist due to the mean behavior of her boss.
  • Broken Bird: Trying to work as a model ended up getting her in trouble thanks to a graveyard photoshoot gone wrong. She was forced to get a soul-crushing job as a dental assistant to a condescending boss in order to take care of herself and her extremely bizarre younger sister. Her experiences have left her jaded and cynical, quick to impart Renaldo's teenage sister with the lesson "Trust no one."
  • Butch Lesbian: She dresses in dark, masculine clothing, doesn't wear much makeup, and her hair is usually very frizzy and not combed. She has sex with Carmencita after Renaldo turns Carmencita down, otherwise her sexuality doesn't come up at all.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She does her best to keep Tati focused and on track during their jobs. She also keeps the others from getting too swept up in Tati's behavior, such as signalling Andrés to not ask any questions when Tati makes a non-sequitur about cheating on her nonexistent husband.
  • The Dreaded: "Double L," her nickname among figures of authority from when she went to the National Spanish Council as a teenager to successfully change the alphabet and eliminate redundant letters. Twice.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Between her and Tati. She is the responsible one, having a full-time job to support the two of them. When Tati's behavior gets them in trouble, she's the one who can actually focus on fixing the situation.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Choleric of the group. She's the most responsible and hard-working, being the only one who has a steady job at the start of the series. She also knows what she wants and doesn't let others push her around, but because of that she can be cold, condescending, and cynical.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: While Renaldo's makeup effects play an important part in their jobs, it's Úrsula who does the ingenious practical effects work that is often the key to their success. She's able to pull off a bed-swallowing trick on extremely short notice that Renaldo thought would be impossible to perform. She's also a far better negotiator than him, able to talk Teresa Lobos into paying them actual money when Renaldo was too nice to turn down being paid in restaurant vouchers.
  • Odd Friendship: With Andrés, as she is a dental hygienist and he's the heir to a chocolate empire.
  • Starving Artist: She got a job as a dental assistant because her artistic endeavors weren't making her enough money to live off of.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Her casual attire is mostly masculine and she laughs at the idea of wearing a sexy dress to Andrés' wedding, but she has worked as a model wearing feminine goth clothing in the past and she does wear a dress to the wedding, albeit not a revealing one.
  • Unfazed Everyman: She's the most normal of the group and she generally takes the others' weirdness in stride. When Andrés starts talking about his mysterious past, she just brushes it off with "Yeah, I know", and she's particularly unfazed by Tati's behaviour.

Tatiana "Tati" Fuentes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/losespookys4.png
Played by: Ana Fabrega
Úrsula's scatterbrained sister and Los Espookys' designated test dummy. She is constantly switching between strange jobs to try and make a living, and willing to put herself into any situation the other Espookys need her in.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She rarely pays attention to what's happening unless she's explicitly told "Listen", agrees to perform jobs that make very little sense (manually spinning a fan, being a human Fitbit), shows up for events hours ahead of time (she hid out in the Ferracuti mansion for the whole night before Los Espookys were supposed to be there), and doesn't notice any danger when a man holds her hostage at knifepoint. She eventually reveals that she experiences all of time at once, so she has trouble determining where she is at any given moment.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Her inability to hold down an endless string of weird jobs leaves her uncertain what she wants to do with her life. Her only dream is impossible (She wants to be Cirque du Soleil. Not be in Cirque du Soleil. She wants to be Cirque du Soleil. The gymnasts, the tents, the audience, the shirts they sell on the way out, etc.), so she starts to question where her life is leading her.
  • Dissonant Serenity: As per her indestructibility, she keeps a wide-eyed and vacant expression no matter what she's enduring. When Andrés puts homemade make-up on her and asks her if it's irritating, she notes very plainly that it's burning her skin without any change in inflection.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Between her and Úrsula. She's flighty, ditzy, and generally doesn't seem to understand what's going on at any given moment. She constantly switches between bizarre jobs, such as breaking in other peoples' shoes or manually moving the hands on a clocktower, and she accidentally gets her and her sister into financial trouble.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Phlegmatic of the group. She's sweet, rarely thinks bad of anyone, and is always eager to help others out. But she can also be a bit too eager and generally has trouble making her own decisions.
  • Made of Iron: She claims to be indestructible, offering to set herself on fire if it'll help with the exorcism and eager to prove it by jumping off a balcony. Running face-first into a wall barely gets a reaction out of her, and Úrsula tests the quality of soap by getting her to lick it.
  • Ms. Red Ink: She puts herself and Úrsula into debt by buying into the Hierbalite multi-level marketing scam, and the elaborate outfits she wears for a few Whole Costume Reference gags probably weren't cheap either.
  • Non-Linear Character: Tati's bizarre behaviour is caused by her experiencing the past, present, and future at the same time, so, as she puts it, there's a lot of noise going on in her head.
  • Sympathetic Magic: She can use buttons to affect people from a distance, such as making Juan Carlos feel a pain in his back by poking what appears to be one of his cufflinks.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Andrés questions why Tati has an accent, which she explains is from spending two weeks living in Minnesota learning English. Úrsula notes that she didn't actually end up learning any English.

Tico

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/losespookys5.png
Played by: Fred Armisen
Renaldo's uncle and a trusted and dedicated employee of a valet parking company. He is very supportive of Renaldo's efforts and happy with his job, but struggles with his daughter's attitude problems and his own tendency to be too selfless.
  • Abusive Offspring: No matter how polite or kind he is to his daughter Sonia, she lashes out at him like as if he's some kind of monster.
  • Cool Uncle: Renaldo sees him as really cool and inspirational despite him being very very ordinary.
  • Extreme Doormat: He's non-confrontational and willing to do whatever it takes to make other people happy, such as putting up with his daughter's verbal abuse, driving a drunk stranger home, or letting a washed-up film director make a movie in his apartment.
  • Hero of Another Story: He has his own ongoing adventures in Los Angeles that only occasionally intersect with what's happening to the main characters.
  • Humble Goal: His childhood dream was to park cars for a living. He's now a legend at the valet parking company where he works.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: When Renaldo visits him the United States, his idea of seeing the sights consists of taking Renaldo to common U.S. chain stores like Trader Joe's and TJ Maxx.

Juan Carlos de Leon

Played by: José Pablo Minor
Andrés' insufferable boyfriend and heir to the Juan Carlos Cookies company. He only likes beautiful things, having no interest in Andrés' love of horror, and he seems to only care about Andrés at all because he wants their families' businesses to merge together.
  • The Beautiful Elite: He's an affluent rich man who can't stand things that aren't beautiful, to the point that when he watches Beauty and the Beast, he skips the scenes with the Beast. He will also throw random compliments about his own appearance into conversations, such as specifically telling Andrés to look into his beautiful olive eyes when wanting to get Andrés' attention.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: In the speech he prepared for an influencer award show, he notes that they are all beautiful, so that makes them good. In reality, he's a terrible person who just happens to be physically attractive.
  • Control Freak: He's always the one in charge whenever he and Andrés are together, often teaming up with Andrés' parents in order to make sure he gets what he wants.
  • Gym Bunny: He makes money as an internet influencer with a channel dedicated to workout videos. Úrsula watches them, but only to laugh at how ridiculous he looks.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: Andrés only agrees to marry Juan Carlos if he gets to still do spooky stuff, and Juan Carlos agrees because he's certain that Andrés' priorities will change once they're married.
  • I Meant to Do That: He insists on presenting himself as flawless to other people. During his wedding to Andrés, he says that they have to make the guests think that everything that happens is on purpose, even if an earthquake strikes during the ceremony. This comes back to bite him when Tati signs the marriage certificate instead of Andrés. He's forced to marry Tati instead of admitting that something went wrong.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Andrés insists that Juan Carlos is a lot more thoughtful than he lets on, because they first met during a rainstorm when Juan Carlos offered to share his umbrella. But then Andrés finds out that his parents and Juan Carlos set up the whole thing, including faking a rainstorm, meaning that Juan Carlos really is just as obnoxious and shallow as he appears to be.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: He is disturbed and uncomfortable when Andrés decides to hug him on their wedding day.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Renaldo and Úrsula repeatedly question why Andrés puts up with Juan Carlos just to appease his parents.

Melanie Gibbons

Played by: Greta Titelman
The ditzy, bleach-blonde United States ambassador. She treats her position more like she's the host of a reality show competition, with her underlings vying for her approval so they can one day take her place as the next ambassador. She first appears as a participant in the inheritance scare Los Espookys set up for the late Ignacio Ferracuti, then later the group goes to her for work visas so they can accept a job in the United States.
  • Alpha Bitch: She runs the US Embassy in a very cliquey, juvenile way, with her many underlings serving as her Girl Posse. She fires employees over bad fashion advice, but they are still slavishly devoted to her.
  • "Ass" in Ambassador: She doesn't speak Spanish despite being ambassador to a Spanish-speaking country, and she doesn't know anything about local politics. When a reporter asks her about a border crisis, she's dumbfounded because she thought the interview was going to be a puff piece about what she keeps in her purse.
  • Dumb Blonde: She has bleached-blonde hair and knows next to nothing about the country she's ambassador to. Upon seeing a document written in Spanish, she thinks it's in some kind of secret code.
  • Global Ignorance: Not only does she not know anything about the country she's ambassador too, she doesn't seem to know anything about the country she's from. When Los Espookys tell her they've gotten a job offer in the United States, she tells them that they have to see "downtown" as if the United States was a single city.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She's the most stereotypically feminine character in the cast, and she always dresses in pink. She has also decorated the interior of the embassy building in pink, making it look like a Barbie dreamhouse.
  • Slave to PR: When she spots a party at a house near the Ferracuti mansion, she worries that if she doesn't appear in any of the partygoers' photos on social media, then people will think that she was intentionally not invited, proving she's not as popular as she claims to be.
  • Valley Girl: She constantly fusses over her appearance, both in terms of physical appearance and what people think of her, she doesn't know how to do her job, and she talks like a teenage girl. While she is generally friendly and cheerful, she becomes vindictive when angered.
