Characters present in High Hopes, Low Rolls
High Hopes party members
Paddock "Paddy" Whitlaw
Paddock Whitlaw, Paddy to his friends, is the last known son of the Whitlaw noble family, of Bay Hollow. For two years he traveled with a circus to see Arcadon, but when he returned, he found his home in ruins, and his family gone.
- Chaotic Good
- Charm Person: A variant, Crown of Madness.
- Color Motif: Autumn orange, see Seasonal Motif bellow.
- Noodle Incident: According to ABD, he did something worthy of getting a bounty on his head, causing an assassin to come after him. Said assassin ended up falling In Love with the Mark.
- Older Than They Look: In his 40s, despite looking in his 20s.
- Pungeon Master: He apparently "puts the 'wit'' in 'Whitlaw'"
- Royal Rapier: Of the noble Whitlaw family, and wielding a rapier.
- Seasonal Motif: Autumn. He palette is mostly earthly colors, his cloak is made of leaves and his magic takes the shape of autumn leaves.
- Tarot Motifs: In the Themed Tarot Deck, he's The Sun, which symbolizes jovial optimism and enthusiasm, but becomes sadness and depression when reversed. Fitting, as Paddy is generally jovial, but lost his family. It can also symbolize luck, which is appropriate for someone who's class gets the Stroke of Luck ability.
- Tragic Keepsake: His wooden mask was given to him by his older brother.
Gimgar
A member of the High Hopes party when Paddy joined up.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: Little Guy to Nagar's Big Guy.
- Chaotic Neutral
- Facial Markings
- Hates Baths: "[...] she's only bathed once, and that wasn’t by choice"
- Hypocrite: Played for laughs. When someone asked why Ava has a beard, Gimgar answered that all dwarves have beard. She herself is clean shaven.
- Magic Knight: Both her classes are focused on combat, while both her subclasses giver her magic powers.
- Noodle Incident: Something changed her alignment to Chaotic Neutral. What is not revealed yet.
- Official Couple: With Torlin.
- Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Averted. She's tall (by dwarf standards), beardless and her clan, the Runedar, are descendants of Duergar (greydwarves) that moved above ground. Her most notable trait is having black sclera.
- Statuesque Stunner: She's 5 feet, making her a very tall dwarf, and even taller than some elves.
Nagar
A dragonborn barbarian who wants to be a paladin.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: The Big Guy to Gimgar's Little Guy.
- Draconic Humanoid
- Dumb Muscle: He's not the sharpest axe, but common is also not his first language.
- Lawful Good
- Token Minority: Inverted. He's the only straight guy in the party.
- Token Non-Human: While most of the party is nonhuman, Nagar is the only one who's obviously so, as he's a Dragonborn.
Gwing Veloce
A half-elf rogue in charge of the team's braincell management.
- Ambiguously Bi: The FAQ only states that she "likes people".
- Bag of Holding: Her favorite magic item.
- Deadpan Snarker: From the Tumblr:Ask: i'm getting the feeling malark's emo hair isn't just for showMalark: It isn’t just for show, it hides my face for a good reason.Gwing: That reason is that he’s an emo.
- Neutral Good
- Official Couple: With Rook.
- Only Sane Man: As stated, she's in charge of the party's braincells.
- Talking Weapon: Her bow, apparently. It's not particularly smart.
Ava Green
The party's druid and a proper drunkard.
- The Alcoholic: Never shown without a bottle.
- Erotic Literature: Is apparently chronicling the story of the party in the form of a smutty novel.
- Girls With Mustaches: Being a dwarf, she has a beard (more like stubble, but still).
- Our Dwarves Are All the Same: A lady dwarf with a beard.
- True Neutral
Rook Lunera
A master of the arcane and a founding member of High Hopes, Low Rolls.
- Color Motif: His magic is rendered in green-ish turqoise, and it's the primary color used in his Tarot card.
- Combat Tentacles: The Hunger of Hadar spell.
- Counterspell: One of his favorite spells.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His parents were murdered by masked assassins, his sister dissappeared without trace soon after, and his arcane teacher was also murdered soon after.
- Eye Scream: He's blind in one eye, due to the same assassins who killed his parents.
- Immortality Seeker: Downplayed. In response to a comment about Paddy outliving his human lover, Rook suggested, rather enthusiastically, becoming a Lich and living forever.
- Lawful Neutral
- Official Couple: With Gwing.
- Robe and Wizard Hat: Just look at the guy.
- The Smart Guy: Aside from Paddy, he's the only member of the party who relies on Intelligence for his magic, and the only full caster. Intelligence, however, does not equal wisdom.
- Smoke Out: The Misty Step spell.
- Stock Gods: His favorite is, appropriately enough, Ioun, goddess of knowledge.
- Summon Magic: Despite being specialized in the Transmutation school, his favorite spells are mostly summonings and conjurations: Summon Greater Demon is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, Hunger of Hadar calls upon the power of an Eldritch Abomination and Misty Step is effectively him conjuring himself somewhere else.
- Tarot Motifs: As a wizard and one of the prime movers of the High Hopes party, he's unsurprisingly The Magician, representing inspired action and resourcefulness. It's also number 1 in the Major Arcana (although usually not the first, since The Fool can be either #0 or #22 depending on your deck), and he was a founding member of High Hopes.
- Wizard Classic: Aside from being only 35, he fits the bill rather well.
Torlin
A dwarf bard and Gimgar's girlfriend.
- Chaotic Good
- Foregone Conclusion: She'll die.
- Official Couple: With Gimgar.
- Our Dwarves Are All the Same: A lady dwarf without a beard
Friends
Rosa Zahradny
The mayor of Kadar and the primary sponsor of High Hopes. She is a longtime friend of Rook, and was the one to suggest Paddy join up with the party.
- Black Mage: She's a sorcerer, so she's not beholden to the traditional schools of magic, but she apparently has a preference for Evocations, spells focused on manipulating energy directly. While it does have healing applications, the Evocation school is mostly about this trope.
- Draconic Humanoid: On the far human end of the scale, she has gold scales on her arms and face.
- Hero of Another Story: She presumably had many adventures between breaking up with Rook and becoming mayor of Kadar. She was also Jenny's previous player character, making her literally the hero of another campaign.
- Odd Friendship: Maybe not "friendship," but Paddy takes notice of her unusual connections. She has him deliver letters to a thief, the head monk at a temple and a sex worker. All strange acquaintances of a mayor.
- Playing with Fire: She's a draconic sorcerer with a preference for pyromancy.
Foes
Hydracil
A dragonborn worshipper of Tiamat who has been chosen as his Mistress' champion
- Draconic Humanoid: A dragonborn.
- The Dragon: No pun intended. He serves Tiamat as her champion.
- Tarot Motifs: The Devil, representing an unhealthy relationship to a higher power, something that is not of the greater good.
Ernest Drake
A childhood acquaintance of Rook suspected of murdering his parents.
- Color Motif: A vilanous purple.
- Punny Name: Invoked. The assassins wearing his colors said before murdering the Luneras "and so it begins with earnest".
- Self-Made Orphan: He inherited his parents' money when he was young, with rumors claiming that he was responsible for their untimely death.
