Personalia
Age: Between 18 and 30
Birthday: N/A
Zodiac: N/A
Height: N/A
Blood Type: N/A
Occupation: Confectioner
Affiliation: Route dependent
The main character of the game. Her life spent loving sweet foods and working at a confectionery in London during the 19th century all gets turned upside down when she tries to return a stranger’s pocket watch and ends up in “Wonderland” - a.k.a. Cradle - as Alice the Second, a person from the Land of Reason with the ability to deflect magic spells - and a target for several factions who want their hands on that power.
  • Action Girl: Less so in the way of traditionally fighting, but she’s not afraid to take the bullet if her lover is in the line of magic fire.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: In Kyle’s route, he has a tendency to ruffle her hair as a gesture of affection. Fenrir often jokingly pets her on the head too. Zero also tells her that he's not good at comforting people, so he finds petting their hair to be more soothing instead.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Her Alice name can be this, and Loki and Seth are the biggest perpetrators. They rarely call her by her real name, unless things are serious.
  • All-Loving Hero: Being The Heart of the story, she can befriend people from both sides, and often frets about her friends from both armies having to fight each other once this happens.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Briefly, in Lancelot’s route.
  • Anti-Magic: She has the ability to repel magic.
  • Badass Adorable: She’s a cute, kind, and occasionally snarky young woman with a massive Sweet Tooth. But when the chips are down, she’s willing to repel magic until she’s exhausted, in order to hinder the Disciples of Magic. This often involves going head-to-head with powerful magic spells.
  • Battle Couple: Whenever she repels magic while her army boyfriend does the traditional fighting. Especially in Fenrir’s route.
  • Big Eater: For such a small girl, she can really pack it away, especially when her Sweet Tooth shows up.
  • Bodyguard Crush: The basis of Fenrir’s route, as he asks Ray to be her bodyguard after seeing her crying about her situation. To a lesser extent in Kyle’s route as well, though he’s far less of a fighter than Fenrir.
  • Crash-Into Hello: How she meets Blanc when he’s in London, and their meeting kicks off the whole plot.
  • Damsel in Distress: She’s the target of the Magic Tower in each route, and they usually find a way to get her inside one way or another. She’s never distressed for very long though, and she even talks back to Amon.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: She’s prone to saying her thoughts aloud
  • Distracted by the Sexy: She's almost indignant when she notes out loud (see above) that Amon is good-looking, when she sees his face
    Alice: But you're so pretty.
  • Eyeless Face: She has very large and dark blue eyes, but the player can change the settings so that her eyes aren’t visible in the artwork, which sometimes makes her look like this.
  • Falling into His Arms: Her entry into Cradle happens like this, with Ray.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Averted, unless the player chooses to do the above and remove her eyes from the CGs.
  • The Heart: No matter which army she chooses (or even if she chooses neither), she brings the people around her even closer, especially in the Red Army.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Her real name can be chosen by the player.
  • Iconic Outfit: The outfit she’s shown wearing in artwork, the blue and white dress with a red ribbon tied around the collar.
  • In-Series Nickname: Everyone calls her Alice at some point, but Loki and Seth clearly turn it into a term of endearment more than anyone else.
  • Just Friends: On Fenrir’s route, she and Fenrir insist they’re this in order to avoid breaking the promise they made not to fall in love with each other. Nobody believes it.
  • The Kindness of Strangers: She got into this mess because she wanted to return a stranger's pocket watch.
  • Limited Wardrobe: She’s only shown to be wearing the same blue and white dress in CGs. Averted if you assume she’s wearing her avatar’s clothing in-story.
  • Locked in the Dungeon: Usually ends up here at some point in the story, thanks to the Magic Tower.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Her moniker Alice the Second is this, as it’s after Alice the First.
  • Nerves of Steel: While she’s not a fighter, she’ll often throw herself in front of somebody from Cradle to No-Sell the attacks from the Disciples of Magic.
  • Never Gets Fat: She has a big appetite, especially for desserts, and yet she’s shown to be very thin. Kyle even mentions that she needs to eat more, because “a weakling like [him] can pick her up easily.” Oliver also wonders if her stomach is connected to another dimension, though this being Oliver, he’s most likely saying it to get a rise out of her as much as he actually means it.
  • Nice Girl: The whole reason she got into this mess is because she wanted to return Blanc’s pocket watch to him, because it seemed to be well taken care of and special to him. And she had literally just run into him seconds before.
    • This trait eventually earns her the favor of both factions, no matter which side she chooses.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Literally, as Alice at first only joins the Red or Black Army as a way to get back home, before growing to love Cradle and its people.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Less so with her outfit in the CGs, but her avatar sprite in her room can be dressed in all manner of fancy dresses. Usually the last piece of Premium attire she can get in a route is a flowing ball gown-length dress that matches the Color Motif of whichever route she’s on.
  • Player Character: She is the POV character naturally.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Gives some pretty blunt The Reason You Suck Speeches to Amon, when she meets him.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She’s the only female character in the game, with 17 possible suitors. Even the Magic Tower is not shown to have any female disciples, as they’re all cloaked and mostly described in gender neutral language, so it’s impossible to tell.
  • Stumbled Into the Plot: Of course, given the story the game is based on.
  • Supreme Chef: More like Supreme Baker, since she primarily likes to bake and eat sweet foods and desserts. She leans more toward this when Luka teaches her his recipes in his route.
    • Sweet Baker: She did work in a confectionery, and she's a very kind woman.
  • Sweet Tooth: Her massive love for sweet foods is one of her traits most brought up in the story.
  • Vague Age: Despite having more backstory than normal for a Dating Sim heroine, Alice’s age is never explicitly stated and is left up to the player. The only hints are that she states she’s older than Loki is at 19, and is implied to be younger than Sirius, who is 30.
  • The Voiceless: She can speak, and often has lines of dialogue not chosen by the player. But by virtue of being the main character, she has no voice actor, so she’ll never have any voiced lines.
  • When She Smiles: Noted by several characters to have a wonderful smile.
  • Workaholic: She’ll always insist on helping out around the Black Army headquarters during her stay, in order to repay them for taking her in for the month. This is especially prominent in Luka’s route, where she attempts to bury her nervous apprehension in work, which he calls her out on. She also takes her job as Kyle’s and Oliver’s assistant seriously once she commits to it in their respective routes.

The Red Army

The members of the Red Army, ruling over the West side of Cradle.
    In general

May glory run crimson through our veins!
Tropes pertaining to the Red Army as a whole.
  • Badass Crew: Like the Black Army, the Red Army is comprised of masterful sword fighters that train everyday to hone their skills. The ranked leaders are the best of them (well, except for Kyle), and trained for their positions all their lives.
  • Childhood Friends: Lancelot and Jonah
  • Color-Coded Characters: Each member has a specific Color Motif that corresponds to them. Overall, their theme color is obviously Red.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Virtually each of the leaders of the Red Army has some kind of troubled past, which is at odds with the refined way they do work.
    • Lancelot: had his father killed and his body displayed for all to see on the Black Bridge. When he inherits the title of King, he discovers there’s been a long line of King of Hearts colluding with the leader of the Magic Tower, and his father was killed by the current leader for disagreeing with him. Lancelot then has to abandon his two best friends and keep them, Alice, and his entire army in the dark to protect them and figure out a way to destroy Amon alone. All the while pretending to be Amon’s pawn.
    • Jonah: grew up in a noble family with a strict upbringing, and knew that he would be the Red Queen from the start. He reveals to Alice that he was often bullied for his looks and prestige as a child, and later for standing up for his younger brother, Jonah being the only one who ever showed affection to Luka. When Lancelot gives him courage after being beaten up, he decides then to dedicate his loyalty to Lancelot as his king. This is made more heartbreaking in his route, where he briefly thinks his best friend and king has betrayed his trust and his army after all these years. What’s more, Jonah’s determination to prove himself worthy had caused him to push Luka away as a child, and now his relationship with his beloved little brother is broken.
    • Edgar: was raised by his uncle after the death of his father, and his uncle adhered to the past 100 years of the Jack of Hearts being the personal assassin for the King and Queen, teaching his nephew everything he knows about killing, scheming, and presenting a facade of affability to throw people off his trail.
    • Zero: spent his childhood growing up in the Magic Tower, a place that is hardly a warm and friendly place. His parents or where he came from are never mentioned, and neither is his leaving the Tower and his rise through the army to Ace of Hearts, though he explains to Alice in Edgar’s route that he eventually transferred to the same boarding school and Edgar took it upon himself to make Zero his protege. In his route it's revealed that he was born in the Magic Tower as the first human created from magic refined from Magic Crystals, and was named Zero as the (actually) first attempt at such. He was completely isolated in the Magic Tower, born to be used as a research subject by people that didn't care for him or even see him as human, watching the other children who were "born" as he was die. When his magic ran out at 14, he was able to live, but couldn't be researched on at the Tower anymore. Instead of killing him, the Senior Disciples decided instead to send him out into the world he was unfamiliar with, to see how long he lasted since he managed to outlive the others. Even after he arrived at the boarding school where he would eventually become Edgar's swordsman protege, he isolated himself from others because he felt different, and buried his feelings of loneliness in working to earn his place as Ace of the Red Army.
    • Kyle: As with the rest, he came from a noble family that always took the place of 7 of Hearts but it was actually Kyle’s older brother who was meant to be the army doctor. The position fell to Kyle after his brother died, during the Day Lost to Darkness. Every time he visits his parents his father, the former 7 of Hearts who never got over his son's death, insists on talking about it over drinks with Kyle.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While they’re not nearly as friendly as the Black Army, and have no qualms threatening and kidnapping Alice to get her to their side, none of them have any intention of harming her, and they’re all unwilling to provoke the Black Army needlessly. The times when the Red Army soldiers attack the Black soldiers and Alice, it’s always younger new recruits trying to prove themselves to their leaders and win King Lancelot’s favor, and they’re always punished by Lancelot and Jonah for it. Even the Black Army knows this, as they acknowledge that the Red Army has rigid rules that they always play by.
  • First-Name Basis: Oddly enough for the army much less friendly than their counterparts, they all refer to each other by first name instead of titles.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite initially being cast in a more antagonistic light at first, the Red Army aren’t the bad guys of the story. However, they do have strict rules they abide by and punish those soldiers who perform unsanctioned acts, usually by removing them from the army and sending them back home. Also, they’re not afraid to engage in large battles involving swords and magic. Even the two ranked leaders who are kinder to Alice display this. Zero is the best swordsman in the Red Army, and as the Ace is in charge of the vanguard. He also declares in the prologue that the time for the armies to fight has come. Kyle, despite being no good in a fight, doesn’t back down from treating horrible wounds without clamming up, and is surprisingly vehement against anyone who would throw their lives away.
  • Implausible Hair Color: Averted for the most part. The members all seem to have normal hair colors, the only exceptions being Jonah’s pale hair walking the line between white and blond, with an occasional greenish tint, and Zero’s random blond streak in his dark hair.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Each member wears their uniform differently, ostensibly to signify their rank in the Chosen Thirteen:
    • Lancelot: As King, he wears his uniform the most neat, with the biggest deviation being the large and rather dramatic fur-lined cape draped over his shoulders. He also carries his sword with him at all times, and wears a sash across his chest.
    • Jonah: Wears a scarf-like sash around his waist, and a smaller and less flamboyant cape over a shoulder.
    • Edgar: Wears his uniform crisply with a high collar, white gloves, and pronounced coattails.
    • Zero: Wears a cropped jacket with the sleeves rolled up, as opposed to a more standard suit jacket, and has several small daggers sheathed in a belt. He also appears to wear several ropes of bracelets on one wrist.
    • Kyle: being the resident medic, his biggest deviation is the white lab coat he wears over his normal army uniform, with a stethoscope always around his neck.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Hearts
  • Red Is Heroic: The Red Army are just as much willing to fight for all of Cradle, and oppose the Magic Tower, as the Black Army.
  • Red Is Violent: The prologue paints them in a far less friendlier light in comparison to the Black Army, although both sides are raring for a fight.
  • Revenge: Their reason for declaring war on the Black Army when Alice falls into Cradle. They believe Lancelot’s father and their former King was killed by someone from the Black Army, and his body displayed on the Black Bridge. It wasn’t the Black Army.
  • The Team: Played pretty much as you’d expect, with a couple of them wearing different hats. Lancelot is very obviously The Leader since he’s the King of Hearts, while also being viewed as The Hero by his men, especially Jonah. Jonah is the second-in-command, he’s in the prime position to be The Lancer, though he’s usually too loyal to Lancelot to disagree with him much. Edgar is generally a more faithful version of The Lancer than Jonah, being able to prod at his King’s reasons for doing things like disappearing by himself and keeping Alice, making it clear he’s onto Lancelot’s true intentions. Also shows signs of The Smart Guy, if only for his ability to read people and situations, as well as his scheming nature. Zero is often being the least rude or standoffish of the bunch, you could make a case for him being The Heart of the group, as he usually has reservations about taking more extreme measures against Alice and the opposing army. He’s also the best candidate for The Big Guy, being the Ace of Hearts with the implication that he worked his way up to the position as opposed to being handed it through family. Kyle is the member with the least amount of combat ability, but the best medical expertise, puts him firmly in The Smart Guy category. He even graduated from university at sixteen.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Though it’s somewhat downplayed in the story proper, all of them but Lancelot are this to Amon, as they have no idea they’re being used in an elaborate scheme to pit the armies against each other while someone else rules from the shadows. They never seem to have a real conversation about this however.

Charismatic & Ruthless

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto

Personalia
Age: 29
Birthday: January 11th
Zodiac: Capricorn
Height: 6 ft (182 cm)
Blood Type: AB
Occupation: King of Hearts
Affiliation: Red Army

As the King who commands the Red Army, his followers swear their allegiance to his formidable leadership. He holds tremendous magical powers and advocates a dictatorial government, but sometimes reveals his innocent side.

  • Always Save the Girl: His reasoning for kidnapping Alice ultimately boils down to this. Being the only one in the know about the true nature of the war between the armies, he believes she's the safest at Red Headquarters where he can see her.
  • Bait-and-Switch Tyrant: He doesn't exactly seem friendly at first, and even threatens Alice during their first encounter. This is largely a ploy to trick the real mastermind.
  • Broken Pedestal: He's briefly this to Jonah, in Jonah's route.
  • Color Motif: Crimson red
  • Dark Secret: The true nature of his relationship with Amon.
  • Death Glare: Can look pretty scathing sometimes
  • Defrosting Ice King: Over the course of his route, Lancelot goes from a cold and unapproachable king to a kinder man learning how to trust and open up to other people again.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Uses his magic to wipe Alice's memories of him so that she'll choose to safely leave Cradle without getting mixed up in Amon's plot.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though it takes him awhile to start showing it.
  • The Kindnapper: His reasons for wanting to bring Alice to the Red Army are quite different from what everyone thinks. He's trying to protect her from Amon and his Disciples, since he's the only one who knows what's really going on.
  • Kuudere: Lancelot's cold words and unemotional demeanor belie a hidden heart of gold that deeply cares for the people around him. That's why he does what he does.
  • The Leader: He's the King of Hearts, the leader of the Red Army.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has shaggy blond hair for someone so stern, and while he may not be Jonah he's still very pretty.
  • Not So Above It All: Whenever Kyle even mentions needles, Lancelot nervously starts threatening him against bringing a syringe anywhere near him. This coming from the coldly stoic commander of the proud Red Army.
  • Parental Abandonment: His father died before the story started, and his mother is never mentioned.
  • Passing the Torch: On the receiving end of this from his father's death. The Red Army leaders delineate rank by family, so it didn't come as a surprise to one day find himself King. His father's death at the hands of Amon for not being a suitable pawn was probably the bigger surprise.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Related to Death Glare above, this is his more neutral expression. Since his smile is rare, he more usually just looks vaguely bored by everything.
  • Pinky Swear: A bonus story shows him making a pinky promise and singing the song that goes with it. The rest of the army leaders are suitably shocked.
  • Power of Trust: Heavily at play in his own route, both with him learning to trust in Alice and she choosing to trust in the good in him that she sees.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His irises glow red whenever he’s about to use his magical ability, which usually means trouble for his enemies.
  • Self-Sacrifice Scheme: In his route he's determined to battle Amon alone while Jonah escorts Alice back to the Garden, before the battle between Red and Black can really get underway. Thankfully, this doesn't go quite the way he imagined it would.
  • The Stoic: He emotes the least of any of the Red Army leaders. This is so he can keep everyone an arm's length from him, and therefore away from his entanglement with Amon. This starts to change by the end of his route.
  • Tragic Hero: What he ultimately ends up being.
  • Used to Be More Social: On Sirius's route, it's implied Lance used to be more open and talkative about his ambitions and hope for the future, though he was probably never a chatterbox.
  • Walking Spoiler: He himself isn't a spoiler, but his true intentions and connections to the Magic Tower are major spoilers not just for his own route, but all the others.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Sirius and Harr.
  • Worth Living For: Decides his relationship with Alice is worth sticking around for, and won't put himself into another Self-Sacrifice Scheme as long as he has her.

Composed & Saucy

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae

Personalia
Age: 27
Birthday: November 18th
Zodiac: Scorpio
Height: 5 ft 9 in (175 cm)
Blood Type: B
Occupation: Queen of Hearts
Affiliation: Red Army

The beautiful Queen of the Red Army has sworn his unbreakable loyalty to Lancelot. He adores his younger brother Luka, but often finds those feelings rebuked. Confident and a perfectionist, his likes and dislikes are clearly defined.

  • Accidental Public Confession: Toward the end of his route.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: His noble background and dainty looks made him the frequent target of bullies growing up.
  • Anger Born of Worry: When Alice is two hours late for their date, Jonah sticks around in the rain to wait for her, worried sick that something terrible has happened. When he learns she was helping a lost boy find his brother his anger relents but he still makes it clear that he was really worried.
  • Berserk Button: God help you if you say one bad thing about Luka in Jonah's presence. Or Lancelot. Or Jonah, himself.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Jonah would move heaven and earth for Luka. Too bad he seems blind to the fact that Luka hates him.
  • Broken Pedestal: He's been on both sides of this trope
    • With Luka, he's the broken pedestal, when Luka feels betrayed by him as kids and begins to see him for his arrogant tendencies
    • With Lancelot, the pedestal he put his king on is broken in his own route when Lancelot threatens Alice and exiles Jonah for asking whether he's been working with the Tower. However, things get better for them.
  • The Charmer: His sizable in-universe fanbase is largely due to this and his good looks. He tried to be this to Alice in order to get her to willingly join the Red side by falling in love with him, but it doesn't work, and he ends up falling for Alice instead. Even when she does begin a relationship with him, Alice subverts this by deciding to stay with the Black Army and be a mediator between the two sides until they can work together civilly.
  • Chick Magnet
    • Even the Guys Want Him: There is a group of soldiers who call themselves "Jonah's Heart Defenders" and fanboy over the Queen of Hearts. Everybody but Jonah is aware they exist.
  • Clear My Name: Towards the end of his route. Subverted when it turns out Lancelot never truly banished him from the army, as everything Jonah confronted him with was true. Lancelot just didn't want to tip Amon off that he planned to betray him.
  • Color Motif: A pale, salmon pink. This probably references his beautiful looks as well as his refined and noble background.
  • Cultured Badass: It's very clear that Jonah comes from nobility, and it's also clear that he's a force to be reckoned with when he wields his sword. He's able to singlehandedly cut through a crowd of brainwashed Red soldiers, even though it pains him to have to use his weapon against his allies.
  • Defrosting Ice King: His haughty attitude and position of power make him seem entirely unapproachable at first. Thankfully, he quickly reveals his other sides and becomes much warmer.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: His looks make it easy for some players to mistake him for a woman at first.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His introductory scene in the prologue is rife with this.
Jonah: [to Alice] You mean to tell me you don't know who I - Jonah Clemence - am?
Alice: [to herself] That's exactly what I said.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was bullied and beaten up horribly as a child, for his prestige and doll-like delicate appearance, with the bullies doubting he could ever be worthy of the title of Queen of Hearts.
  • Friendless Background: His lifestyle and standing up for himself and Luka to bullies precluded having many friends growing up. This could partially explain his loyalty to Lancelot.
  • I Owe You My Life: His feelings toward Lancelot, though slightly downplayed. While maybe not his life per se, definitely his drive and confidence in being Queen of Hearts and second-in-command of the Red Army could be attributed to a child Lance telling a child Jonah not to give into what others think of him.
  • It's All About Me
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Less so than Lancelot but still played pretty straight. Less because he has something to hide and more because he's just got an ego the size of Red Territory.
  • Large Ham: Usually when talking about himself or Luka
  • Narcissist: Though not entirely without justification!
  • No Social Skills: He doesn’t seem to realize that bragging about how awesome he is doesn’t endear him to Alice, or Luka, or pretty much every named character in the story.
  • Parental Favoritism: Due to him being the next Queen of Hearts.
  • Passing the Torch: The eldest son of the Clemence family has been Queen of Hearts for the past 500 years.
  • Princely Young Man: Averted. With his good looks, noble family background, and second-highest rank in the army, you might expect him to be like this. Then he opens his mouth.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His theme color is light pink, and most of his bedroom is made up in pink/red tones. He even has a tower of pink macarons you can get as a route item for your room. It seems the reason for this was to highlight his affluent lifestyle, because the guy still kick tons of ass in battle.
  • The Resenter: Toward Sirius, the opposing Queen. Further investigation seems to imply it’s because Luka treats Sirius as more of a respected big brother figure than he does his own older brother.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: He thinks the best way to dry wet laundry is by whipping it around like a propeller over his head, and orders that the cooks make a savory five course dinner time meal as breakfast for Lancelot. It’s clear he had people do these things for him growing up.
  • Signature Scent: Apparently has one, and buys Alice the female version as a goodbye present on his route, at her request. He becomes adorably flustered by this, and fails at hiding it.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Heavy on the Ice part, though he begins to thaw the more he gets to know the MC and vice versa.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mille-feuille. And you better not forget the strawberries on top.
  • Tsundere: The most classic example of the cast, which really saves him from being too arrogant.
  • Uncle Pennybags: Sees nothing wrong with buying Alice every dress in her size at a store, calling 500 “a start,” as well as trying to buy her expensive jewelry and even her own property on their first date/duel. Alice is horrified.
  • Undying Loyalty: Believes in Lancelot more than even himself. Another redeeming quality of his, even if it sometimes gets him in trouble.

Smooth & Black-hearted

Voiced by: Taku Yashiro

Personalia
Age: 25
Birthday: August 23rd
Zodiac: Leo
Height: 5 ft 7 in (170 cm)
Blood Type: O
Occupation: Jack of Hearts
Affiliation: Red Army

You’ll be hard-pressed to find fault with the Jack of Hearts. He’s both a perfect soldier and a perfect gentleman, but incredibly fond of animals and junk food. He may look refined at first glance, but he’s not nicknamed “the gentle demon” for nothing.

  • Abusive Parents: Well, uncle, but he was still this.
  • The Atoner: By his route's end.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the beginning of his route, he saves Alice from a band of thieves. Subverted when it seems he had planned their meeting that way. Double subverted when it turns out it actually wasn't him.
  • Childhood Friends: With Luka, both of them usually meeting on the rooftop of their boarding school while skipping class.
    • Seems he was also this to Zero, around the same time. However, it started as more a mentor-student relationship before becoming real friendship.
  • Color Motif: Yellow
  • Corrupt the Cutie: You could make an argument that Claudius did this to Edgar as a child.
  • Dark Secret: Being an assassin is generally treated as such, outside of Lancelot and Jonah who are supposed to order the assassinations. However, they never do.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Many players agree his route is one of the more dramatic.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Invoked. Edgar's bland and pleasant smile often belies his true intentions, thoughts, and feelings on a situation. However, he's generally more mischievous than downright evil.
  • Forced into Evil: Courtesy of his uncle, Claudius. Edgar's father wanted a different life for his son than being another Red Army assassin, as the Jack of Hearts had been for the past 100 years, but with his death Claudius raised Edgar instead, into being the perfect gentleman and the perfect assassin from childhood. Edgar had little choice but to go along, and bury his reservations and fear under an unfeeling blandness.
  • Forgiveness: A major theme of his route, especially in the latter half.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Usually only when the "living things" in question are animals, of which he seems to have a special affinity with.
  • Friendly Enemy: His unnerving calm in tense situations gives him this vibe.
  • The Gadfly: The resident one in the Red Army. His favorite pastime seems to be needling and teasing his colleagues.
  • Go and Sin No More: At the end of his route, his trial ends on this note. With Claudius's written confession from jail taking more of the blame off Edgar, he leaves a free man determined to spend the rest of his life atoning for his crimes by being a true force for good.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Implied to be what he means when he complains of his life being endlessly boring and dark.
  • Insecure Love Interest: When he realizes his feelings for the MC he believes he has no right to touch her with hands that have been stained by blood.
  • Karma Houdini: Though the game rightly asserts that the real villain of his route his Claudius, Edgar still gets off pretty easily by the end of it.
  • Lima Syndrome: Though he did bring her to Red headquarters in order to bring her over to their side, he still ends up falling in love with the MC.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name, Bright, is this since he's believed he's been living in darkness until he met Alice.
Edgar: Thank you for bringing me into the light.
  • The Mentor: Was Zero's mentor in swordfighting and seems to genuinely care for his protege, in his own way.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being on opposing sides, he speaks very politely to the Black Army soldiers.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Edgar starts panicking, you know shit has hit the fan.
  • Passing the Torch: The Bright family has been Jack of Hearts for generations.
  • Precision F-Strike: When Alice accuses him of using her and runs away into the woods, Edgar uncharacteristically yells "Goddammit!"
  • Red Herring: It really seems like his saving Alice from the bandits and bringing her with him to Red headquarters is another of his elaborate schemes. It isn't.
  • Schemer: Does this a lot, to the chagrin of his colleagues and annoyance of his enemies.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to both Luka and Zero's Sensitive Guy.
  • Stepford Smiler
  • Sweet Tooth: For junk foods like jellybeans and lollipops.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Brightly colored jellybeans, to Jonah's endless horror.
  • Training from Hell: Kyle mentions that he gets more soldiers coming to the infirmary on the days Edgar leads the combat practice. He also presumably went through this as a child being raised by Claudius Bright, the former Jack of Hearts all too happy with killing for profit.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: His relationship with Zero can best be described as this, usually set up as a long-suffering Zero reluctantly putting up with Edgar's teasing way of showing affection.

Withdrawn & Intelligent

Voiced by: Kentaro Kumagai

Personalia
Age: 23
Birthday: October 10th
Zodiac: Libra
Height: 5 ft 7 in (170 cm)
Blood Type: A
Occupation: Ace of Hearts
Affiliation: Red Army

The formidable swordsmanship of the Ace of Hearts belies a curious childhood spent in the Magic Tower. Within the Red Army which stresses rank, he toiled with painstaking effort to earn his. To those around him, his very existence is an anomaly.

  • Abusive Parents: This trope is played with in a strange and heartbreaking way. Being "created" from magic instead of born traditionally means Zero has no actual parents. The closest he comes to it is the Senior Disciples of Magic that created him, but they were very far from kind to him.
  • The Ace: This is his Red Army rank, and for good reason. He's so good with the sword that he was able to earn his rank without family prestige.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Some of the soldiers don't show him respect as a superior because he doesn't have the "crimson blood" that the other soldiers inherited. There is even one nameless soldier in his route that goes out of his way to be an ass to Zero, to Alice's fury. He was also implied to be this in school, until Dean Tweedle recommended Edgar take Zero under his wing.
  • Always Save the Girl: His route begins by him happening across Alice in the Forbidden Forest and saving her from Dalim and his men. They had only briefly been introduced a few days before.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Zero's origins and how he came to be Ace is treated like this, until his route was released.
  • Ambiguously Brown: His tanned skin tone is the darkest of the main cast.
  • Amnesiac Hero: For a few chapters in his route, courtesy of Amon.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Related to Always Save the Girl above, he doesn't hesitate to jump in between Alice and the Disciples. Made even better when you realize why Zero has every reason to avoid the Tower.
  • Bridal Carry: Carries Alice like this when he saves her from her first encounter with Dalim.
  • Brought Down to Normal: He used to have magical abilities, being essentially a test tube baby made with magic instead of science, and this is why he was created and used as a research tool by the Tower. However, due to the circumstances surrounding his creation, his magic dried up when he was fourteen, and he was subsequently kicked out of the Tower, the only home he'd known until then. Dalim implies he was originally going to be killed, but since he was the only "prototype" to live that long, they decided to monitor him from afar.
    • Brought Down to Badass: After leaving, he went and mastered swordsmanship, eventually earning the rank of Ace of the Red Army, despite not having the family lineage. Zero went and made a name for himself, becoming far more important than the Disciples thought he'd be, which he tells Amon in his awesome "The Reason You Suck" Speech at the end of his route
Zero: I have a teacher who taught me the sword. A king that has accepted me. And a woman, [MC], that taught me what it means to be happy. ... I became human.
  • Character Tics: He has an unconscious tendency to scratch at his tattoo whenever his past is brought up. Taken to heartbreaking extremes at the end of his route.
  • Color Motif: Orange
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Toward the end of his route, when Amon erases his memories of Alice and the Red Army, turning him into "Prototype Zero," to be used as a pawn and killing machine. He breaks out of it, thanks to Alice and Edgar.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Boy howdy. Zero's had a rough life from the start. It would be enough to just be artifically created from the power of Magic Crystals as a test tube baby, knowing you don't have any real family to speak of. But then he spent his childhood completely isolated in the Magic Tower, used as a research subject by the Senior Disciples, none of whom treated him with kindness. Then once he lost his magic abilities he was tossed out of the only home he'd ever known, and put into boarding school without knowing anyone. He'd learned to isolate himself early enough that he doesn't even recognize his own feelings of loneliness anymore. If it wasn't for Harr he'd have absolutely no positive memories of his childhood to speak of, and even then he can't remember that it was Harr who gave him candy and comfort as a child.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being created artificially and raised by the Magic Tower, Zero is as much a hero as anyone else in the Red Army.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Poor Zero gets put through the wringer by his route's end.
  • Friendless Background: He had a pretty lonely childhood, until he met Edgar in boarding school when Zero was about fourteen. Alice tells him at his route's end that he probably had learned from a young age to bury his feelings of loneliness until he didn't recognize them anymore.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Justified, since he was "created" in the Magic Tower and not born to human parents. Of course, he has a few insecurities about this.
  • I Owe You My Life: A bit downplayed, but his loyalty to Lancelot in particular is because Lance allowed him the position of Ace, and therefore a place to belong in the army, despite his not having the heritage. Zero had nowhere else to go after he left boarding school, and he muses at one point that he could have been abandoned on the streets like Rico if he hadn't been allowed to join the Army. This is why his decision to save Alice from Lancelot bringing her to the Magic Tower is so poignant - he and the MC both think he's choosing her over the man that gave him his home. Good thing Lancelot wasn't actually working for Amon in the first place.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Zero tells Edgar that he won't ask Alice to stay in Cradle despite the threat being gone, because he's not sure how long he has left to live, since he wasn't supposed to live as long as he already has. Alice points out that no one alive knows the answer to that, regardless of their birth, and that's why it's important to spend the time you have with the people you love.
  • Knight of Cerebus: His route is where the extent of the atrocities committed by the Senior Disciples of the Magic Tower are revealed.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Not anymore, but Zero says he used to have long hair as a child. He thought it made him look like a girl, but Alice muses to herself that if he grew his hair out now he'd still look very masculine.
  • Meaningful Name: He believes his name has no meaning at first since its a reminder of his being a test tube baby with no real family. The MC gives his name a meaning when she explains that zero has limitless potential, and that there would be nothing without zero.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Zero's slim build belies the fact that he's the best swordsman of the Red Army. You wouldn't know that he's constantly training with his saber to look at him.
  • No Social Skills: He tends to keep a certain distance with everyone he meets, until he takes the MC into his care to protect her from Dalim and his disciples of the Magic Tower. Doubles as a Freudian Excuse since he was alone and treated as an object instead of a person since his unconventional birth. Knowing he was created by the Tower caused him to draw a line of difference between himself and others, so Zero is hardly very sociable. He gets better once Alice draws him out of his shell.
  • Passing the Torch: Averted. He's the only Red Army member to not come from a family of former Aces of Hearts. His origins are explored in his route.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Zero is the quiet and kind Sensitive Guy to Edgar's teasing Manly Man.
  • The Stoic: He's right behind Lancelot in this category, but a straighter example, since he's usually just The Quiet One of the Red Army as opposed to Lance's Defrosting Ice King demeanor. They are, however, both this way because they have thing to hide. Zero is hiding his past and the fact that he was created using Magic Crystals as an experiment, while Lancelot is hiding his The Mole status for the Magic Tower, so that he can get close enough to Amon to stop him.
  • Suave Sabre: Armed with a saber, which you can get as a bonus accessory for his avatar after you read his Romantic Ending from his POV. Since Edgar taught him how to fight, he's mastered the skill and used it to make a home for himself in the Red Army.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Lollipops, each character gives him a special kind of lollipop at the end of his route when he's recovering from the fight at the Magic Tower. This is because Harr gave lollipops to Zero when he was a child growing up in the Tower, and it's probably the only positive memory he has of it, even if he can't remember Harr.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: His relationship with Edgar can best be described as this. It's actually pretty sweet when Edgar helps Zero regain his memories Amon stole, by saying being his teacher and companion since they were schoolboys is his pride and joy in life.
  • Workaholic: Until Alice came along and showed him how to enjoy life, Zero was always working and training with his sword, even on his days off. This is because he constantly feels he has to work to keep the home he created for himself.
  • You Are Number 6: The origin of his name Zero. He was the first of the artificial lifeforms created in the Magic Tower, using Magic Crystals. The Disciples named him, literally, just "0".

Wild & Lazy Doctor

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa

Personalia
Age: 23
Birthday: July 17th
Zodiac: Cancer
Height: 5 ft 8 in (172 cm)
Blood Type: O
Occupation: 7 of Hearts (Doctor)
Affiliation: Red Army

He may be the youngest in the Red Army, but the 7 of Hearts is a model in machismo and often takes a wide view of things. His love of drinking leaves him constantly hungover. He graduated at 16 from university, and his knowledge excels all else - but don’t count on him in a fight.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He's fond of doing this to the MC in his route, especially when he's drunk.
  • Berserk Button: Don't you dare say life has no meaning around Kyle. He's not very taken with anyone who has a death wish.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Despite being the best doctor in all of Cradle, he's still quite fond of drinking and sleeping.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Related to the above, it may be hard to believe it, but he is the best doctor in Cradle.
  • Butt-Monkey: Usually when the rest of the cast make fun of his drinking habits, or express disbelief that Alice could be attracted to him.
Blanc: Kyle without a drink is like dinner without carrot cake!
Zero: But the three pillars of your life are eating, sleeping, and drinking.
Jonah: Kyle not drinking feels like a harbinger of doom.
Kyle: Keep talking and I'll sue you all for defamation of character!
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Despite the frequency with which he drinks, he's a surprising lightweight.
  • Character Tics: He usually scratches his head when he feels awkward or embarrassed.
  • Color Motif: Brown
  • Dark and Troubled Past: To a similar extent to most of the rest of the cast, though he's considerably good at masking it. He was delivering a university textbook to his older brother in Cradle's boarding school, and so was there on The Day That Went Dark, and witnessed his brother's last moments of life while he and his father were unable to save him.
  • Determinator: Say what you will about Kyle, he's very determined to save as many lives as he can as a doctor, no matter which side they happen to be on. This mentality is partly what led him to become the best doctor in the country.
  • Ditzy Genius: He was a child prodigy, entering university by thirteen and graduating by sixteen, and his room is filled to bursting with complex medical books. However, he's a little socially unaware.
  • Fiery Redhead: Averted. He's the only redhead of the cast and yet he maintains a friendly and relaxed personality. Even drunk, the most he is is a little goofy.
  • Friend to All Children: During their house visits as his assistant, Alice realizes that all the children from both Red and Black Territories like Kyle, and he's very good at keeping his younger patients calm and relaxed.
  • Friendly Enemy: A straighter example of the trope than Edgar, he really doesn't hold much hostility toward the Black Army, even admiring Ray and going to Black headquarters to treat a wounded Luka. He really doesn't care whether his patients are Red or Black, he just wants to treat them.
Kyle: Whatever. Just because I'm a member of this army doesn't mean I'm going to blindly do everything I'm told. I'm a doctor, not a soldier.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Amon tells him that Kyle will doom other lives in the future by saving his, Kyle briefly questions his ideals, and then berates himself for hesitating anyway.
  • Hidden Depths: He hides how much pain his brother's death, and the subsequent deaths of any of his patients, gets to him. He's buried his tears for so long that it takes some gentle persuasion from Alice to get him to finally let them out. His sobs are strangled and stalled, because he rarely cries at all.
  • Humble Hero: Even when Alice gives him genuine praise, in amazement of his talents and convictions, Kyle doesn't seem to react to it much, apparently thinking he's only doing what he is supposed to.
  • Men Can't Keep House: His room is very messy, and apparently the infirmary is a little cluttered as well, what with bottles of booze hiding in odd places. His room is mostly littered with stacks of medical tomes however.
  • Messy Hair: Highlighting his laidback demeanor, and lackadaisical personality. He also probably musses his hair a lot.
  • My Greatest Failure: Being a doctor, Kyle's Goal in Life is to save as many lives as he can since he couldn't save his brother's life. Of course sometimes this means he can't always save the life of every wounded soldier that comes to his door.
  • Nerves of Steel: When a Red soldier is taken to the infirmary with life-threatening injuries, he doesn't hesitate to jump into action. He almost becomes a different person when a life is on the line.
  • Nice Guy: Being a doctor who saves lives regardless of army affiliation, as well as being friendly to kids and willing to do what he can to protect Alice, of course he is this.
  • Non-Action Guy: The most non-action member of either army. By his own admission, he puts his duties as a doctor before being a soldier. He can't fight anyway.
  • Not So Stoic: A minor plot point in his route. He finally allows himself to cry at Alice's urging.
  • Oblivious to Love: This trait of his rivals Luka in his own route. Despite his intelligence, he lacks some social and emotional awareness, and it takes the better part of his route to recognize the feelings he has for Alice.
  • Only Sane Man: In regards to the war between the armies, he has shades of this, being critical of the reasons for fighting and the true motives behind the war declaration. At least until he realizes there is more to what is going on than animosity and revenge. In a straighter example, he is this when it's time for him to help someone who is critically wounded. He's the one who snaps Alice out of a Heroic BSoD when he flies into action.
  • Passing the Torch: The Ash family has held the position of 7 of Hearts for generations. It was originally supposed to go to Kyle's older brother.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's a member of the Red Army and the best doctor in all of Cradle, determined to save as many lives as he can regardless of territory.
  • Stepford Smiler: His affability is natural but he pushes away his tears because he doesn't want anyone to see him cry, he thinks it doesn't help anything.
  • Survivor Guilt: It's not very obvious, given his Determinator stance, but he apparently feels a bit of this in regards to the death of his brother and the other students on The Day Lost to Darkness.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Insofar as alcohol can be considered food. Seems especially fond of ale.
  • Unwanted Assistance: When he tries to save Amon's life, sticking to his ideals. Amon feels that he'd rather die than not see his plans come to fruition, and briefly gives Kyle a Heroic BSoD by saying that Kyle will doom more lives by saving his.
  • Weak, but Skilled: He can't fight to save his life, or even run very fast, but he can perform medical and surgical feats on others very well, earning him his reputation.

The Black Army

The members of the Black Army that watch over the East side of Cradle.
    In general
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/218e0def_a64f_4c1d_9b87_1c9d9c6352b8.jpeg
Freedom soars on raven wings!
Tropes pertaining to the Black Army as a whole.
  • Badass Crew: Just as with the Red Army, the Black Army are all exceptionally skilled fighters, often training several times a day. Since they refuse to use magic while fighting, they train hard to make sure their skill with weaponry is up to snuff. They also rely on strategic planning and nighttime attacks, so all and all they're on par with the Red Army when it comes to skill.
  • Birds of a Feather: Moreso than the Reds, the ranked leaders of the Black Army all get along well and bond over shared meals. Alice notes that they're like a big raucous family.
  • Blue Is Heroic: The Black Army seems to have blue as a secondary color motif, given their uniforms' accents and the furniture in their base.
  • Bromantic Foil: Ray and Fenrir work well together as army leaders and as best friends. Ray tends to be more stoic and brusque with an occasional deadpan delivery who doesn't like to use magic in battles, while Fenrir is a Hot-Blooded Gun Nut who uses magic bullets against enemies that won't physically harm his opponents. They both have a Thou Shalt Not Kill policy, which turns out is due to a shared Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Childhood Friends: Ray and Fenrir
  • Color-Coded Characters: Each member has their own Color Motif associated with them. As a whole, it's Black.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The Black Army contains some of the nicest characters in the game, and they are all quick to accept Alice into the fold and protect her until the next full moon.
  • Delinquents: How they're portrayed by the Red Army, especially Jonah, in comparison to the nobility of Red Territory.
  • Dysfunction Junction: All of them, to varying degrees.
    • Ray: The young king has a lot of drive, thanks to The Day That Went Dark, when he awakened to his innate magical powers against a group of people kidnapping classmates from his boarding school. He couldn't properly control his powers however, and he ended up killing everyone involved, including the students. He's carried the guilt ever since, and has refused to use his magical powers against Lancelot and his army, instead fighting to achieve peace and freedom by his own physical strength. This determination is what led him to become King of Spades at only 24.
    • Sirius: Grew up believing he'd take over the family business as a gardener and florist, only to instead have one of his best friends become a wanted man and the other become King of the opposing faction, and seemingly give up on his noble dreams of uniting the two sides in order to become cold and ruthless, without Sirius ever knowing why for either. He hates fighting, but nevertheless gave up his peaceful life to become one of the Black Army's Chosen Thirteen, in order to figure out Lancelot's true motives and bring Harr back into the light.
    • Luka: Grew up the second son of a noble Red Territory family whose eldest son would be Queen of Hearts. Luka felt unwanted since birth, with all of the attention and training falling on Jonah. However, Jonah was the only person in his life who acknowledged and loved him until he one day seemed to stop caring about Luka just like everyone else, breaking Luka's heart and his trust in him. This pushed Luka to abandon his family to join the opposing army and become one of their Chosen Thirteen, the Jack of Spades, the third-in-command of the entire army. Despite this, and despite his friends loving Luka for himself, he still pushes himself to the brink of exhaustion every night, doing extra training until he felt he could be worthy in the eyes of all the people who dismissed him growing up.
    • Fenrir: Fenrir is a noble from Black Territory, who was set to inherit his father's extremely successful construction company. This did not happen. He was the first to find Ray on The Day That Went Dark, and found his traumatized best friend surrounded by the carnage, and his fallen classmates. Fenrir blames himself for being too late to help Ray, and has vowed to find the group responsible for the whole thing by joining the Black Army. His trauma from witnessing this event is also why he uses guns equipped with bullets made from Magic Crystals that don't harm the people he shoots - he doesn't want to witness that level of bloodshed again.
    • Seth: Seth is seemingly the most well-adjusted and happy-go-lucky member of the group. But little is known about his past, and he seems to know more about the Magic Tower and its Disciples of Magic than he lets on. There are plenty of times when his cute outward personality drops.
  • First-Name Basis: They all refer to each other by first name instead of title. Makes more sense with these guys though, because they're all very close friends as well as comrades.
  • Good Is Not Soft: They may be the friendlier bunch from the start, but they can kick just as much ass as the Red Army when things get dangerous, and they do it without relying on magic. When Alice gets kidnapped by the Reds, they make it clear that they're willing to fight if she is not returned to them.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: When it looks like someone from their side murdered the former King of Hearts, even though they didn't. As we don't ever see any citizens' reactions to this claim however, this trope is downplayed somewhat.
  • Implausible Hair Color:
    • Luka's dark hair is obviously more purple than black
    • Fenrir and his bright magenta hair
    • Seth's hair looks more blue-white than blond
  • It's Personal: Somewhat surprisingly, they have more members directly related to the crimes of the Magic Tower and Amon Jabberwock.
    • Ray and Fenrir are both ready to bring the place down when it's discovered the shady group of people who caused The Day That Went Dark were disciples from the Tower looking for children with innate magical abilities to experiment on.
    • Sirius loses both of his best friends to the machinations of Amon Jabberwock.
    • Seth: It's implied he's very much part of a bigger plot than he shows, and it seems to be very personal for him.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: They all wear variations of the army uniform, possibly to denote their positions as members of the highest-ranking Chosen Thirteen:
    • Ray wears an army jacket under a cape that is Chained by Fashion.
    • Sirius wears his jacket open and his shirt untucked with a loose tie and fingerless gloves
    • Luka appears to wear a scarf with his suit jacket and his massive broadsword is a constant presence over his shoulder
    • Fenrir wears holsters for his twin pistols at his waist and his armband hangs from his belt. He also wears a Chained by Fashion cropped jacket, not unlike the other Ace, Zero. He also appears to forego the standard dress shirt for a hoodie instead. Being the member with the most divergent uniform seems designed to highlight his Wild Child personality
    • Seth wears a Badass Longcoat that seems able to hide all manner of knives and daggers as well as a bolero tie
  • Lovable Rogues: In stark contrast to the Red Army's noble professionalism.
  • Playing Card Motifs: Spades
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A cat-loving young king, a gardener who's the oldest of the cast, a shy cook who ran away from his family, a Gun Nut with magic bullets, and Seth.

Cool & Popular

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

Personalia
Age: 24
Birthday: March 23rd
Zodiac: Aries
Height: 5 ft 8 in (172 cm)
Blood Type: O
Occupation: King of Spades
Affiliation: Black Army

The young King of the Black Army hates being tied down and values freedom above all else. He is stoic and candid with everyone he meets, and is popular with Cradle citizens of all ages. Despite his brisk demeanor, he has a soft spot for cats.

  • The Atoner: Does what he can to lead his army reliably, and works as hard as he does without relying on magic in order to become a good enough man to make up for losing control of his magic on The Day Lost to Darkness.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: His being King is directly related to his skill in battle.
  • Break the Cutie: Happened to him when he was in school, at only about 14/15 years old, on The Day Lost to Darkness. He was fighting to save his classmates from being kidnapped by a shady group of cloaked Disciples and discovered he's one of the rare humans that can expel magic without the use of a Magic Crystal - at the cost of being unable to control his magic, hurting and even accidentally killing everyone around him. He hasn't been the same since, according to Fenrir.
  • Bridal Carry: Catches Alice like this when she falls from London into Cradle, and Sirius thinks he's having a secret meeting with a lady friend. Alice immediately gets flustered but Ray finds it funny that that's what she'd be worried about.
  • Childhood Friends: With Fenrir.
  • Color Motif: Navy blue.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was directly involved in the Day Lost to Darkness, over a decade prior to the story.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Somewhat the reasoning behind his rise to King of Spades at such a young age, due to his Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Determinator: In his decision to not rely on his magic, he becomes this with the rest of his training.
Ray: Everything I've accomplished, I've done with these two hands.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Not Ray himself, but his cat Belle. Belle is a male cat, but his name is a female name. Ray apparently named him because of the bell on his collar.
  • Goal in Life: To lead his army, Black Territory, and eventually the whole of Cradle into a peaceful new era, protecting everyone's right to live normal, happy lives. Most likely because of the guilt he feels that the students he accidentally killed with his powers can't.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Fenrir is his best friend.
  • It's All My Fault: Believes this, even though as he had just awakened to his powers he of course couldn't know how to control them. He was only trying to save his classmates.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover
  • The Leader: He's the King of Spades, the leader of the Black Army.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: Doesn't use magic in battles like Lancelot and the Red Army. Subverted, he's one of the few characters with inherent magical energy.
  • Man of the City: States his reason for fighting is to protect the normal everyday lives of the citizens of Cradle. His bio also states that he's "popular with Cradle citizens of all ages."
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He's mostly able to go about his business now, but he occasionally slips into this when thinking about what happened at his school ten years prior. Shown to definitely be the case in a flashback told from Fenrir's POV.
  • My Greatest Failure: Thinks of himself as sharing the responsibility of the Day That Went Dark, when really it was the Disciples of Magic that caused it. Regardless, this thinking is what motivates him.
  • Nice Guy: Catches Alice when she falls from the sky, and immediately establishes himself as one of the characters most sympathetic toward Alice and her predicament
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He just wanted to save his classmates from their kidnappers.
  • Not So Above It All: He has his moments where he joins in with the others' teasing, usually when it's at Sirius's expense.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Whenever he’s about to use magic, made more prominent by the fact he tries not to use it.
  • Stepford Smiler: Keeps his magical powers hidden, as well as his past experience during The Day That Went Dark.
  • Survivor Guilt: Definitely, best seen in his own route.
  • Tragic Hero: Once Alice finds out what drives him, he definitely becomes this.
  • Tragic Mistake: Discovering his own powers while trying to fight off Disciples from kidnapping his classmates.

Thoughtful & Foxy

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe

Personalia
Age: 30
Birthday: May 7th
Zodiac: Taurus
Height: 6 ft 1 in (185 cm)
Blood Type: A
Occupation: Queen of Spades
Affiliation: Black Army

While looking out for others and being adored by his men as a reliable ranked leader, the Queen of Spades guides his young king without sparing his blunt personality. He’s a stickler for tidiness and enjoys the quiet of gardening. He seems to have history with Lancelot, the opposing king.

  • A Father to His Men: Even more so than Ray, by virtue of being the oldest and the most reliable. He frequently treats the other Army members, and then Alice, like younger siblings. Sometimes comes back to bite him when he's made the butt of jokes as "Papa Sirius."
  • Affectionate Nickname: Calls Lancelot "Lance" and usually refers to Alice as ojou-chan or "little lady" in the English translation.
  • All According to Plan: He's really quite good at strategizing.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Related to the above, Sirius is often described as a father or big brother figure to his friends, as well as Alice. At least until he discovers his feelings for the latter have changed.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Luka views him like this, which is probably why Jonah hates him.
  • Butt-Monkey: Whenever Ray, Fenrir, and Seth tease him for his Team Dad tendencies.
  • Call to Agriculture: Averted, when he joined the army instead of the family business as a gardener and florist.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: For as mature as he is, Sirius is an incredible lightweight and so avoids drinking when he can.
  • Color Motif: Teal blue
  • Cool Big Bro: Has this dynamic with Luka especially, and the rest of the Black Army to a lesser extent.
  • Cultured Badass: He knows the different medicinal and culinary properties of plants, and even demonstrates some knowledge of flower language, and is the Black Army's second-in-command and an unparalleled tactician.
  • Expy: His personality and being the second in command to The Leader makes him a clear expy of Hideyoshi Toyotomi from Cybird's previous game.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: He has a single lock of hair longer than the rest, that falls into his face.
  • Fighting Your Friend: He literally fights Lancelot in his route, and to a lesser extent Harr too, since they have also stopped seeing eye-to-eye. Mostly because they haven't told Sirius all that is going on.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Sirius's kind heart and affable personality is highlighted in his love of gardening and taking care of animals and wildlife. He rescues a baby raccoon, and his presence seems to be the only one she tolerates.
  • Green Thumb: A given when you grew up in a family of them, and were supposed to take over the business to boot.
  • House Husband: He tends to act like this, especially considering his affinity for things like cooking, cleaning, and keeping the Black Army organized and prepared.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Has this dynamic with the MC in his route, by virtue of him being a full head taller.
  • I Will Wait for You: Waits until Cradle has become a safer place before going to the Land of Reason to find Alice and ask her to come back.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Realizes his two best friends have more going on than meets the eye, and joins the army to find out what.
  • Nerves of Steel: In the beginning of his route, while the Red Army soldiers attack them, Sirius calmly chats with Alice about mundane things while occasionally signaling orders out the carriage window to the rest of them. Alice is as amazed as she is confused.
  • Non-Action Guy: He can fight, and Lancelot finds out he's good with his fists, but he dislikes it and prefers to come up with a strategy for the others to implement.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to his coworkers in the Black Army.
  • The Power of Friendship: This is the reason he chose the army despite his dislike of fighting. He wanted to find out what happened to Lancelot and Harr, his two best friends, that led one to abandon his ideals and the other to become a wanted man.
  • Real Men Cook: Is the one backing up Luka in the kitchen most often. He also cooks for Alice a lot in his route, to help comfort her.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His interests include gardening and cooking.
  • The Reliable One: Very much so. Probably the most reliable member of the cast.
  • The Strategist: Fills this role in the Black Army.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: As the resident pretty adult man that towers over most of the rest of the cast.
  • Team Dad
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Lancelot and Harr.

Shy & A Lone Wolf

Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki

Personalia
Age: 25
Birthday: August 24th
Zodiac: Virgo
Height: 5 ft 7 in (170 cm)
Blood Type: A
Occupation: Jack of Spades
Affiliation: Black Army

Quiet and aloof, the Jack of Spades lets his pro-cooking skills do the talking. His delicate looks contrast the rigid resolution in his heart. Despite his Red Territory roots, he’s joined the Black Army. He despises his older brother Jonah and often tells him so, but the latter seems oblivious.

  • Abusive Parents: He has a broken relationship with both of his parents for neglecting him for most of his life.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Similarly to his brother Jonah. He was bullied for being the second son of a family that didn't seem to even acknowledge his presence, and Jonah was always sticking up to the bullying kids for him growing up.
  • Always Someone Better: Jonah was their parents' favored son, since he would inherit the Red Army position. This wasn't a sore spot for Luka at first.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Being Jack of Spades makes him the third highest-ranking member of the Black Army, and his skill with his broadsword proves his merit. Or it does to everyone but Luka.
  • BFS: Armed with a massive broadsword. It's a wonder how he manages to draw and sheathe it so easily.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He and Seth save Alice from an angry Red Army guard in the prologue. He also storms the Magic Tower by himself to save her from Amon.
  • Broken Pedestal: His relationship with his older brother, Jonah. He adored Jonah as a kid, largely because Jonah paid him attention and affection where their parents didn't, and Jonah often protected Luka from the brunt of the bullying they both endured. However, once Jonah became determined to become the best Red Queen he could be, to honor Lancelot's faith in him and prove his detractors wrong, he stopped being there for Luka as he once was. Even though Jonah never stopped loving him, Luka took his change hard, and hasn't forgiven Jonah for leaving him alone.
  • Chick Magnet: Because of his looks and his talent with the violin, at one point in his route he's swarmed by fangirls at a party. He does not love this, however.
  • Childhood Friends: Befriended Edgar while they were in school together, and they still maintain an amicable Friendly Enemy status with each other, despite being the Jacks for opposing sides.
  • Color Motif: Pale purple/lavender
  • The Cutie: He has shades of this role in the Black Army, at least until Alice arrives to take up the mantle.
Seth: I'm the 10 of Spades, Seth, and this cutie here is the Black Jack, Luka.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Even after the armies begin working together he acts like this with his brother. Jonah doesn't quite seem to always get it.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Thanks to his abusive neglect growing up, and his desire to show them that they were wrong.
  • Determinator: To the point that Alice begins to worry.
  • Diving Save: Does this to Alice in the first chapter of his route.
  • Family of Choice: Alice and the Black Army. Heartwarming, considering how he was treated by his blood relatives.
  • Implausible Hair Color: His dark purple hair.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Tries to keep his distance from Alice at first.
  • Inner Monologue: The snippets from his diary are in his POV, and function as this.
  • Insecure Love Interest: It takes a lot of work before poor Luka believes he's worthy of anyone's affection.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Thanks to being mostly ignored by his family.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy
  • Messy Hair: Keeps his long hair pulled back with hair clips shaped like a spade and club.
  • Never Accepted in His Hometown: Why someone from Red Territory is in the Black Army.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his aloof demeanor, Luka is one of the kindest characters in the game.
  • No Social Skills: He's shy and prefers being alone to being surrounded by many people. He also has trouble understanding some slang and social cues.
  • Oblivious to Love: Mostly because he has a hard time believing anyone could have those kind of feelings for him.
  • Parental Neglect: Since Jonah was the one destined to be the Red Queen, their parents never seemed to care much what Luka did. Largely why he ran away to the opposing army.
  • Passing the Torch: Averted, the position of Queen of Hearts went to his older brother.
  • The Quiet One
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Highlights his delicate appearance.
  • Real Men Cook: Luka is the culinary expert of the Black Army. Everyone loves his cooking, and he likes to see people enjoying the food he makes for them.
  • The Resenter: Toward Jonah.
  • The Runaway: He ran away from his family in the Red Territory to join the Black Army. Jonah keeps trying to get him to come back, to no avail.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Wears a scarf with his army uniform, and is very skilled in combat.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Edgar's Manly Man.
  • Shrinking Violet: When he's not kicking ass on the battlefield, his personality is more like this.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Snaps when Jonah tries to bring Alice back to Red headquarters and gets into a brutal argument with him, that escalates into a swordfight until Seth intervenes.
  • The Stoic: Mostly just because he's shy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Since joining the Black Army, he no longer needs Jonah's protection against bullies, and he's grown far beyond The Unfavorite child he used to be.
  • Troubled, but Cute
  • The Unfavorite: To his family, a massive sore spot for him. It gave him a complex about getting stronger to prove his worth.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: He and Alice accidentally switch diaries in his route.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Jonah laments that Luka doesn't follow him around like he did when they were little.
  • We Will Meet Again: Goes to the Land of Reason to bring Alice back home to Cradle, during the next full moon.
  • Workaholic: He spends almost every night training with his broadsword so that he can prove himself worthy of being the Jack of Spades. Since his friends in the Black Army have already accepted him however, this is mostly to prove it to himself, and his parents.

Personalia
Age: 24
Birthday: April 15th
Zodiac: Aries
Height: 5 ft 8 in (172 cm)
Blood Type: AB
Occupation: Ace of Spades
Affiliation: Black Army

The Ace of the Black Army and captain of Special Operations loves combat as much as his weapon collection. He and Ray have been friends since their schooldays. Despite his well-to-do upbringing, his wild yet cool personality charms ladies and gents alike.

  • Abnormal Ammo: His guns are equipped with Magic Crystals that allow them to do all manner of things to his enemies, except kill them.
  • Accidental Pervert: In his route, when he walks into the spring that Alice is bathing in.
  • The Ace: Not only is this his army rank, he's also skilled in fighting and tactics enough to qualify for the trope.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Likes petting Alice's hair.
  • The Atoner: To a lesser extent than Ray, but believes The Day That Went Dark could have been avoided if he'd been there to back up Ray instead of sleeping in.
  • Battle Couple: With Alice, the straightest example in the game, since Alice is rarely fighting.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Alice, Seth, and Luka in the prologue, when the Red Army is coming to attack.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Falls in love with Alice after deciding to become her bodyguard for the month.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Rejects the feelings between them so that Alice can return to London before the war in Cradle begins.
  • Chick Magnet: Gets accosted by several noble women while in the Central Quarter with Alice. He's a perfect gentleman to them, despite turning them away.
  • Childhood Friends: With Ray
  • Color Motif: Lime green
  • Curtains Match the Window: Both is hair and eyes are dark pink.
  • Declaration of Protection: To Alice, in his route.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After Alice gets kidnapped back to Cradle, he finally decides he's not letting her go again.
  • Fiery Redhead: His hair is actually pink, which is a shade of red, and he's the most classic example of this trope in the cast.
  • Grin of Audacity: Sports this in most official artwork.
  • Gun Fu: Duel-wields his pistols with frightening skill.
  • Gun Nut
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: His "best buddy" Ray.
  • Hypocrite: Says he isn't going to fall in love with the woman he's protecting, still falls in love with the woman he's protecting.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very much so.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: A variation of this is the central conflict of his route.
  • Implausible Hair Color: His hair is a deep magenta.
  • Innocently Insensitive: His insistence that he doesn't love the MC, and that she has to return to London, can come across as this.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: His reasoning for making sure the MC gets back home to the Land of Reason, no matter what.
  • Large Ham: When he's anticipating a battle, especially.
Fenrir: Thanks for the invite, I am SO happy to be here!
  • Messy Hair: His hair looks perpetually unbrushed.
  • Nice Guy: Despite her wariness of his love of battle, Alice discovers he is a gentleman through and through.
  • The Promise: Makes three promises to the MC when he offers to be her bodyguard, one of which is that they won’t fall in love with each other. No guesses as to what happens next.
  • One-Man Party: In the prologue. When the enemy isn't expecting him, Fenrir can put them out of commission with time to spare.
  • Tempting Fate: His route is set up like this.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Seth.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: For someone has trigger-happy and battle-loving as he is, Fenrir has a deep fear of ghosts.

Tender & A Skilled Fighter

Voiced by: Taishi Murata

Personalia
Age: 26
Birthday: June 10th
Zodiac: Gemini
Height: 5 ft 9 in (175 cm)
Blood Type: AB
Occupation: 10 of Spades
Affiliation: Black Army

The 10 of Spades is as pretty as he is a good partner for girl talk, especially about cute things and delicious food. But don’t let his dainty manner fool you - he’s a masterful fighter on the field as well. Just when you think you’ve found a new best friend, you may discover a whole other side to him instead.

  • Agent Peacock: Kicks so much ass while still being fabulous.
  • Blade Enthusiast: Has an affinity with daggers and knives. Fitting, since he's in charge of night raids and stealth missions.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He and Luka save Alice from an angry Red Army guard in the prologue.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Seth's specialty in the army is stealth attacks and missions taking place under cover of darkness. Yet, when he and Luka save Alice in the prologue his lack of stealth causes the entire Red Army to come after them. And it's nighttime.
  • Expy: Bears more than a passing resemblance to Zen from Mystic Messenger. The main difference being that Zen still acts more manly than Seth.
  • Camp Straight: His mannerisms can make him very campy, and it's not unusual for fans to mistake him as being gay. His Ship Tease moments with Alice avert this, however, especially when his happy-go-lucky persona drops.
  • Color Motif: Forest green
  • Hidden Depths: There are many hints and out-of-character moments in several routes that hint that Seth may not be all he presents himself to be. At the very least we can pretty safely assume he has a past involving the Magic Tower.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: One of his defining traits; Alice mentions upon meeting him that he reminds her of her friends from home. Played for Laughs especially when someone (usually Fenrir) points out that he's still a guy like the rest of them.
Seth: [to Alice] It's full of smelly men around here. It's so nice to have another girl around!
Fenrir: Seth, you're one of those "smelly men" too, you know.
    Seth: [dangerously] What was that?
Luka: Seth, your gruff side is showing.
  • Large Ham: Many's the occasion. Especially when Alice's virtue is in danger, Seth is likely to be nearby, and he's likely to start shrieking at the sight.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Is the Black Army's resident Agent Peacock and is the only one with a long ponytail, though Luka comes a close second.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His hair is usually held back in place as a ponytail, and he's definitely pretty.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Fenrir.

Neutral Citizens

Citizens of Cradle and the Forbidden Forest that are part of neither army.
    In general
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dae2d540_02bb_484c_9d7f_bcc0698b8097.jpeg
Tropes pertaining to the neutral characters as a whole.
  • Animal Motifs: Loki and cats, Blanc and rabbits, Mousse and mice
  • Beneath the Mask: None of these characters are what they seem at first. Bonus points to Harr for literally wearing a mask.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Blanc and Oliver rescue the MC in the prologue, before Jonah and Edgar can take her back to their headquarters for questioning.
  • Color-Coded Characters: They all have their own Color Motif associated with their character.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of them, explored more in their respective routes
    • Loki was abandoned by his parents for having magic, and was given over to the Magic Tower before escaping and living with Harr.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Harr and Loki, as well as Blanc and Oliver.
  • In-Series Nickname: All of them reference characters from the original story in their aliases:
    • Harr/Joker
    • Loki/Cheshire Cat
    • Blanc/White Rabbit
    • Oliver/Mad Hatter
    • Mousse/Dormouse
    • Obviously Dean and Dalim are Tweedledee and Tweedledum, though it's unclear if they're nicknames like the others
  • It's Personal: Most of them have reason to hate the Magic Tower just like everyone else
    • Harr and Loki are actively keeping surveillance on the tower and their inhumane practices after both witnessing them firsthand.
    • Blanc and Oliver are both visibly uncomfortable when they're brought up, and it's implied both of them have had harmful experiences with the group.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: The group with the most references to characters of the original story. Of course, considering the book was written after Alice the First came to Cradle, maybe the characters are really named after them!
  • Outlaw: Loki and Harr. Lampshaded by Loki in the prologue:
Loki: [to Harr] With you being an outlaw, and me being more or less the same
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: A defining trait of the crew, they're all a little bit odd.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni
    • Loki is the Keet Red Oni to Harr's shy Blue Oni
    • Oliver is the snarky and rude Red to Blanc's kind and friendly Blue
  • Ship Tease: A couple of them are openly attracted to Alice in several routes
    • Loki frequently flirts and talks about how cute the MC is. It's even his first line in the game.
    • Blanc, despite his warning, consistently delivers sickeningly sweet pick-up lines to her, much to Oliver's chagrin. It's implied he does this to all women though he insists that Alice is special to him.
    • Mousse, in what little scenes he's been in so far, is immediately very taken with Alice from the get-go
Mousse: [upon first seeing Alice in Oliver's route] ...Cute.
  • Take a Third Option: The two armies are always a major plot point of any route, but Alice "choosing a side" is less prevalent here.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Loki and fish, Blanc and carrots, Mousse and cheese. Directly related to their Animal Motifs.

Personalia
Age: 27

Blood Type: B
Occupation: Wizard (outcasted)

As both Loki’s guardian and a fugitive who lives in the Forbidden Forest, he goes by the alias “Joker” and is neither a member of the Red or Black Army. He holds magical power equivalent to that of Lancelot’s. Despite his elusive manner, rumors have spread that he’s planning a revolution of his own.

  • Color Motif: Dark purple/violet
  • Dark Is Not Evil
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Loki states that the Magic Tower put out the warrant for Harr, and his interactions with Alice in Loki's route especially prove that he's misunderstood, but not evil.
  • Lonely at the Top: He's Cradle's most powerful wizard, and he's been exiled to the Forbidden Forest with Loki as his only regular companion.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His theme color is dark purple, and he's the most skilled magic-user in the setting.

Personalia
Age: 18
Birthday: February 22nd
Zodiac: Pisces
Height: 5 ft 6 in (167 cm)
Blood Type: O
Occupation: Merchant
Affiliation: Neutral

This capricious young man who’s allied with Harr also goes by the name “Cheshire Cat” and hates rainy days. With his tendency to feel lonely and yearn for love, he’s become skillful at stealing hearts. His dwelling within the Forbidden Forest may be connected to a painful past.

  • Abusive Parents: They abandoned their son when they discovered he had magic, and let the Magic Tower have him. Even if they didn't know that the disciples were going to experiment on him they are still this.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats
  • Attention Whore: Alice frequently thinks he's like a cat that wants his master's attention, and he certainly acts like it.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: At 19, he's the youngest of the romanceable cast.
  • Badass Adorable: He can wield powerful magic spells in addition to being the youngest male in the cast, and an adorable Keet to boot.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Realizes that he fell in love with Alice when she offered him her umbrella in the rain, during their first meeting.
  • Berserk Button: Anyone trying to do Alice or Harr harm, especially the Magic Tower.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Sometimes can come across as this, when he foregoes pleasantries and politeness and gets straight to the point.
  • Color Motif: Magenta
  • Cute Little Fangs: Befitting his Animal Motif, he has an endearingly sharpened incisor that can be seen in some of his sprites.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The reason for his abandonment issues.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: His favorite offensive magic is swiping at his enemies with a claw made from magic.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He remarks on how cute Alice is in the prologue, when he and Harr are watching from the shadows as she leaves with Zero and Kyle.
Loki: The look of fear in her eyes was adorable. It made me want to steal her away.
  • Forced Sleep: Does this to Alice, so she won't leave him and won't get hurt by the Disciples of Magic.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With his housemate and mentor, Harr.
  • Hidden Depths: He has severe abandonment issues, due to his parents whom he loved abandoning him as a little boy once he accidentally destroyed part of their house with magic. He's also determined when it comes to stopping the Magic Tower, and has some moments of surprising insight into what's really going on in Cradle.
  • Implausible Hair Color: His pink hair, a lighter shade than Fenrir's and even longer and messier.
  • In the Hood: His jacket has a hood, complete with cat ears sewn on!
  • In-Series Nickname: Cheshire Cat
  • I Owe You My Life: Feels this way vis-a-vis Harr.
  • Keet: Energetic and cheerful, with a kind and slightly mischievous personality that lets him get away with a lot.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His fighting style seems to imply this.
  • Likes Older Women: Insofar as he's the youngest in the cast, and can start a relationship with Alice, who's older than him.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy
  • Messy Hair: Even more than Fenrir's.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: He's the Cheshire Cat.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: He frequently gets up close and personal with Alice, his route even opens with him biting her ear when they first meet.
  • Outlaw: While he's not outlawed by Cradle like Harr, he is in hiding from the Magic Tower and Amon.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Thanks to his parents leaving him once they discovered he had magic.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes glow red when he's about to use magic, just like the other characters with this ability.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Yet another character who wears a scarf and can kick ass with his magic.
  • Shirtless Scene: Takes off his shirt before going to bed, to the MC's intense embarrassment.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Of course, being the Cheshire Cat.
  • Stepford Smiler: Loki is cheerful and can get along with anyone that isn't named Oliver. So it's hard to believe that, to a certain extent, it's an act.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fish, of course
  • The Trickster: Befitting his association with the Cheshire Cat.
  • Unkempt Beauty
  • Weak, but Skilled: He doesn't seem to have much experience with weaponry, and so relies entirely on magic to fight. He's a skilled wizard in his own right, however.
  • Yandere: While not as vicious as other examples, he starts showing signs of this later in his route, when he tells Alice he doesn't want her to leave him, or think about other men. This culminates in his putting her into a Forced Sleep, but since she breaks out of it on her own and finds him, this is the worst he gets.

Snarky & Sophisticated

Voiced by: Daiki Hamano

Personalia
Age: ??? (Looks 13)
Birthday: April 5th
Zodiac: Aries
Height: Child Form: 4 ft 8 in (142 cm)
Blood Type: A
Occupation: Hatter and Inventor
Affiliation: Neutral

Despite his youthful appearance, Blanc’s housemate has a tongue as sharp as his wit. Also called “Mad Hatter,” he runs a hat shop while taking side jobs in weapon customization, satisfying his inventive side. Although his words and actions may put some adults to shame, this kid’s situation is much stickier than it seems.

  • The Ageless: A side effect of the time retrogression spell placed on him is that his adult form has stopped aging, making him functionally immortal.
  • Clark Kenting: Blanc and Kyle are the only other characters who know that the kid inventor and the adult Mad Hatter are one and the same, despite his clothes, hat, and snarky attitude staying the exact same. It's the most egregious with the MC, who takes over ten chapters in his route to realize that the adult Mad Hatter isn't just a relative of Oliver's despite repeatedly observing how his adult and child selves look and behave identically to each other.
  • Color Motif: Emerald green
  • Crazy-Prepared: He proves to be this on his route, having installed an emergency Smoke Out function in his hat that enables him and the MC to escape the Magic Tower, hidden a pistol up his sleeve that sends out a signal flare to the Black Army, and smuggled out a compass with a voice recording in one of the Tower's shipment boxes to notify Blanc beforehand of his escape plan.
  • Death Glare: He's mastered this.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Does Not Like Spam: He absolutely hates carrots due to having to watch Blanc eat them so frequently.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Is well-known in Cradle for making wacky yet useful inventions.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name, once you know that his appearance changes by night. It's also a reference to him becoming the MC's Knight in Shining Armor on his route.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: He's the Mad Hatter.
  • Stepford Snarker: He acts like he doesn't care at all about breaking the spell on him or ever returning to London to see his father again, when he really does.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Heavy on the vitriol, but he's nevertheless clearly close with Blanc, even if he'd rather eat carrot cake than admit it.

  • Animal Motifs: Mice
  • Brutal Honesty: In Zero’s route, when Zero says he’s just a pawn that the King of Hearts uses as he sees fit, Mousse says he’s just making up excuses to not protect the woman he’d taken in.
  • Coat Cape: Wears his uniform's coat like this.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When Zero takes Alice to his room to meet him, he’s sleeping on the floor. She thinks he’s passed out and is about to run for Kyle before Zero stops her.
  • In-Series Nickname: Dormouse, because he’s small and likes to sleep. Alice notes that it’s very literal.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: As his nickname indicates, he's the Dormouse.
  • Passing the Torch: Defied. He comes from the Atlas family, in Red Territory the family chosen to be Ace, but gave it up.

  • Remember the New Guy?: After he was introduced as a new character, he was retroactively added to first appear in Zero’s route, but he’s not mentioned in any of the previous nine routes before this.
    • Overlaps with Ascended Extra. He was never really an “extra” per se, but he was given a name and lines in the route before his sprite was added later.

  • Stern Teacher: He’s a teacher at the boarding school a lot of the characters attended, and he apparently likes torturing his students with work.
Dean: [to Alice] If I’d had you as a student, you wouldn’t be calling me a “good teacher.”

The Magic Tower

A civic agency on the outskirts of Cradle that is tasked with the refinement and distribution of the Magic Crystals that grow naturally in the Forbidden Forest.
    In general
Tropes pertaining to the Magic Tower as a whole.
  • Evil Tower of Ominousness
  • Faceless Masses: All of the Disciples of Magic look the same, using the same in-game sprite. It's impossible to tell gender or age, bringing this trope into full play.
  • Government Agency of Fiction
  • In the Hood: Their faces are never seen under the hoods of their cloaks. Justified since, until Dalim Tweedle came along, they all use the same sprite.
  • Scenery Porn: The tower itself is certainly pretty to look at, as seen here.
  • Weak, but Skilled: They rely almost entirely on magic to fight, and rarely seem to use conventional weaponry. However, being in charge of them, they know how to wield Magic Crystals very well.

Evil Prince & Ladies Man

Personalia
Age: N/A
Birthday: June 20th
Zodiac: Gemini
Height: 6 ft (182 cm)
Blood Type: AB
Occupation: Bar Owner, Disciple of Magic
Affiliation: Magic Tower

As the owner of the bar Oasis, he flirts with all of his women customers. However, his true identity is revealed to be a powerful Magic Disciple... Even though his appearance is identical to Dean, he denies that they are twin brothers.

  • The Casanova: He tries to shamelessly flirt with Alice when they meet at the pub, and both Zero and Ray are wary of him being around her too long. Even she thinks he seems to be a bit of a playboy.
  • Clark Kenting: Implied. As Dum he’s the owner of a popular pub in the central quarter and a shameless flirt. As Dalim, he’s a Senior Disciple of Magic under Amon Jabberwock. The characters seem to believe him to be two separate people, even though his Disciple robes don’t do much to hide his identity, and he apparently doesn’t change his voice either. Yet no one seems to realize they’re the same person. It is still more plausible than most people not knowing that the kid Oliver is the adult Mad Hatter, though, since his disciple robe does cover his body and eyes.
  • Color Motif: Black
  • I Can Still Fight!: He pushes himself to his limits in his magical fight against Lancelot, at the end of Zero's route. Amon even orders him to use up the last of his magic against Zero and co. knowing what happens to humans who use up their innate magical ability. Lancelot tells Alice that he's just barely alive, and unconscious at the end of the story.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His name references Tweedledum.
  • Pet the Dog: In Oliver's route, he treats Oliver pretty leniently during the latter's captivity in the Magic Tower, letting him walk about freely in the Tower and warning Oliver on several occasions to avoid incurring Amon's wrath. He's also implied to be the one who slipped Amon's journal into Blanc's pocket that might hold a clue on how to break Oliver's spell, although it's left ambiguous if he really was trying to help Oliver or just hoped that he or Blanc would find a way to make the journal legible again.

Personalia
Age: N/A
Birthday: N/A
Zodiac: N:A
Height: N/A
Blood Type: N/A
Occupation: Leader of the Magic Tower
Affiliation: Magic Tower

The leader of the Magic Tower, Amon and his disciples are in charge of the supply of Magic Crystals. With this goal in mind, he does not take part in the conflicts between Red and Black. Or at least, he’s not supposed to.

  • And I Must Scream: In at least one route he gets turned into a living statue when time is stopped for him.
  • Big Bad
  • Combat Pragmatist: Is willing to use whatever means necessary to achieve his goal.
  • Dirty Coward: Prefers to use his Disciples and Lancelot to carry out most of the heavy lifting in his plans.
  • Evil Is Hammy: He's prone to monologuing, smashing his chess pieces, and even the Evil Laugh.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Gets his name from the Jabberwock.
  • The Unfettered: He has nothing holding him back, but what happened to him to make him this way is still a mystery.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Though it's more silvery, this trope still applies.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Isn't afraid to threaten Alice into submission, i.e. cutting her neck with a shard of glass in Luka's route.

Others

Miscellaneous characters of the game.
    Claudius Bright
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7bd7c30a_5fa8_4366_b6bc_4ceb2ec53af8.jpeg
Edgar Bright’s uncle, and the former Jack of Hearts. He raised Edgar when his parents passed away, and taught Edgar everything he knows.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Before he’s taken to prison, his dialogue implies that he’s proud of the person Edgar has become, even if it’s different from what he wanted. He also supplies the final bit of evidence in Edgar’s trial that clears his name.
  • The Dragon: Edgar’s route only. He tricks Alice into delivering her to Amon, without any regard for what he plans to do to her, just so that she’ll be out of the way and stop influencing his nephew.
  • High-Class Glass: Lest we forget this guy is high society.
  • Hired Guns: This is his main source of income after retiring from the Red Army, and he frequently ropes Edgar into the role as well, since Lancelot and Jonah refuse to order assassination attempts.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Asks if he can kiss Alice’s hand upon meeting her, before Lancelot pulls her away.
  • Magnificent Bastard: He’s a classy older gentleman that charms Alice when they first meet, and as the former Jack he’s obviously a skilled swordsman. He also killed his brother, Edgar’s father, for refusing to be the assassin of the Red Army, and raised Edgar to follow in his own footsteps instead, twisting his mind from a young age into believing that he’s been born into a family of killers and is therefore unlovable. He also continues to be a paid assassin for Red Territory nobles, continuing the job even after retiring from the army. Definitely a bastard, indeed.
  • Offing the Offspring: Even though Edgar’s not his real son, he was the one who raised him. It’s unclear if he really would’ve killed Edgar in their duel in the Garden however, as he does seem to care about Ed in his own twisted way.
  • Walking Spoiler: It should be obvious given the amount of spoiler text, but he’s this for Edgar’s route. It’s hard to talk much about Claudius without giving away his role in the story.
Lancelot’s Father, the former King of Hearts
As the Red Army stresses lineage, Lancelot’s father was the Red King before passing the role onto his son with his death. Though he doesn’t show up in the story proper, in some ways he influenced the story to where it is now.
  • Broken Pedestal: Lancelot doesn’t seem too broken up over his death, and is more concerned with stopping Amon in every route than mourning his father so it’s implied they didn’t have a close relationship. It’s possible he only saw Lancelot as an inheritor to the title of King, but as he’s unlikely to show up in the story, we’ll probably never know.
  • The Leader: Considering he was King of Hearts before Lance, this is a given.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Passes the title and role of king down to his son, as is tradition in Red Territory. Both Kings also wanted to break off relations with the Magic Tower.
  • Posthumous Character: Died before the events of the story, though it’s unclear how long ago exactly.
  • Red Is Heroic: Was the leader of the Red Army and valued that position more than working with Amon.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He apparently didn’t like the tradition of working with the Magic Tower behind the scenes any more than Lancelot does now, and tried to break away from Amon’s reach. It’s implied this is partly why Amon kills him.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He doesn’t have a character sprite and his name is never given. He isn’t even mentioned in some routes, but his death and gruesome treatment of his corpse is what allegedly prompts the Red Army into finally declaring war on the Black Army after 500 years.
