alt title(s): Frozen Flower
Outside... ...Inside
Although she seems to lack emotion, this is largely a pretense. — The Talosians from the Star Trek pilot say it best
One of the newer neologisms, a kuudere rounds out the dere family in a rather basic way. Allegorically speaking, a kuudere is like snow: it may be cold and harsh at first glance but it is also what keeps autumn's seeds warm and safe until spring.
Similarly, while she may appear unemotional and practical, it is but a frosty mask that protects her tender, delicate feelings deep underneath the facade, waiting for someone to melt the snow and allow them to spring. A subtrope of the tsundere, the kuudere avoids combative and immature demeanor; rather, she employs more subtle tactics:
- The Silent Treatment: Sometimes this can be used as a blunt and open form of punishment. "I'm not speaking to you anymore." More commonly it's as simple as the recognition that silence is a conversational weapon. Responding to some foolishness with dead silence, perhaps with a slightly raised eyebrow, can be far more effective a putdown then some harsh insult. Occasionally this will be combined with tactic 2.
- Non-Verbal Cues: There are many ways to communicate disgust without words. These range from a haughty look, to sniffing at "boorish" behavior, to sighs about whatever new idiocy she's been called upon to endure. If confronted about it she'll probably reply: "I didn't say anything." (Unless she's giving you the Silent Treatment too- then you're likely to only get a stare.) Note that this can just as often convey approval, especially toward friends that have learned to "read" her.
- Cynicism: Casually blunt and dismissive, but rarely straightforward rudeness even when provoked. However, a conversation with her will always leave you with a faint feeling of being mocked. Witty comments that show how intelligent she is and how foolish you are, she loves those. (If a teenager and female she's The Daria. If even younger, she's a Little Miss Snarker.)
- Stoicism: She eschews more emotional ways of expression, coming across as emotionless, unfeeling, and overly logical. She might not seek out cutting comments, but she ignores the emotions of her companions, and tends to dismiss them as unimportant.
As these traits can also suggest maturity and tact, she may come off as older. To highlight this, the kuudere may be accompanied by a more energetic, clumsier ( or more annoying) Morality Pet wanting to emulate this graceful mature character.
We've been using the female pronoun, but a Kuudere can be male, and a male Kuudere is far more common than he is for other tsundere subtypes. A Kuudere can be used to develop a romantic Will They Or Wont They much like the tsundere. Platonic versions are common though, much more so then for other versions of the tsundere.
Common Variations:
Always In Control: She comes off as "kuu-" because she controls her emotions. She maintains a calm, collected exterior regardless of how she feels. She doesn't conceal her feelings, and will directly and honestly tell you how she feels, but her expressions are subtle, with watery eyes being akin to bawling, and a small smile being akin to a giggle fit. Or all her feelings may be filtered through snark or dry wit. The appeal is her bluntness and directness, in contrast to shy reserve or boisterous rowdiness. If she's the Love Interest either the other partner will be the source of Will They Or Won't They, or they'll skip that and the focus will be on the drama that comes after they admit They Do. Often be The Woman Wearing The Queenly Mask. When she becomes the mask, the "dere" part usually withers and falls off. Occasionally this is a trait of a more exaggerated character, the Emotionless Girl, (or so she claims). Our page picture Raven is an example of this variation.
Once You Get To Know Her: She will show her dere side to those she cares for— but strangers and those she does not trust or like will see the kuu side. In this case, each new acquaintance has to defrost an ice queen persona to get to know her— but it's how EVERYONE gets to know her. Her friends all consider her to be caring and in private moments with them you may just catch her laughing. (Although it will still be considered unusual). It's not that she spares them any of the wit or doesn't act "kuu-" with them sometimes. Her friends just understand it better than those that aren't close. She might have a painful past.
She Has Moods: She alternates between her "kuu-" and "dere" persona depending on her mood. What controls her mood? Some may have clear triggers, and her companions might learn how to manipulate her to their advantage. Others might switch moods at what seems to be random moments- which can be very unnerving or confusing to those around her. Expect a joke about "that time of the month". In really bad cases might start to overlap with Yangire or Yandere. Some might contend that this version isn't "kuu-" (cool) enough to qualify as a Kuudere, and might place them in some other category.
Obviously these variations aren't always used pure, and often are mixed together in different characters. Again using Raven as an example, while she fits the first variation best, she certainly has elements of the other two.
Compare Not So Stoic and Stoic Woobie.
Part of the dere family along with Tsundere (angry outside, sweet inside), Yandere (sweet outside, Ax Crazy inside), and Dandere (anti-social outside, sweet inside).

Anime & Manga
- Dr. Chiba in Paprika.
- Rei Ayanami is a mix of this and Defrosting Ice Queen. In the beginning, she could be mistaken for an Emotionless Girl. She later warms up to Shinji, especially in the manga, and dear God can she be dere over him.
- Ah, Lain, who can contest Rei Ayanami for the role of creepiest Emotionless Girl any time, Mind Rapes herself (or something...) and the façade shatters completely.
- Nora has two of the male variety: Kid With The Leash Kazuma and bluenette bishounen General Rivan.
- Futami Eriko from Kimikiss.
- Yue Ayase from Mahou Sensei Negima. While usually the voice of reason, being part of a Love Triangle with her best friend causes her to break down and reveal a very dere side.
- Chisame is another great example; she's a cynical Meta Girl, frustrated with all the weirdness around her, but when it gets right down to it, she cares for everyone around her a lot.
- Setsuna is also an example; she strives to maintain her cold, levelheaded swordswoman persona, but what she really wants more than anything is to overcome her weaknesses so that she will be capable of protecting Konoka. Notably, Konoka doesn't really care for the whole "emotionless, intellectual warrior" thing, and actively tries bring out Setsuna's more dere side. It works.
- Princess Arika is another example, driven by The Chains Of Commanding. We see flashes of Tsundere when Nagi provokes her. When Nagi finally confesses his love, she becomes all blushy and tongue-tied.
- C.C. from Code Geass. First impression: cool, cynical, indifferent. Deep inner side: oh so dere.
- Chika Ogiue from Genshiken.
- Kan'u Unchou from Ikkitousen. For the most part, she is The Stoic, indifferent Badass Action Girl. But put Ryuubi nearby... then she goes Les Yay deredere to the max. In Great Guardians, it even bordered on Psycho Lesbian or a while thanks to a Mac Guffin.
- Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi. If you think he really is as cynical and apathetic as he claims to be, just take a look at how pissed he got when The Integrated Thought Entity threatened to destroy Yuki at the end of the fourth book, or when Mikuru got kidnapped at the end of the seventh.
- Hiro from Wa ga na wa Umishi is a textbook example, though her dere side comes out very rarely.
- Ai Haibara from Detective Conan is one example, since she's a Defrosting Ice Queen with Deadpan Snarker tendencies. From a Kuudere angle, Ayumi could be considered her Morality Pet.
- Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh, natch. So, so very compassionate and cute on the inside, but outside, she looks like a cold, tough Delinquent. She manages to break out of her cold, reticent shell once she finally manages to pet a cat without getting hurt.
- She's something of a different case in that her "kuu" isn't some sort of façade she's putting up to fool everyone, but something she does completely by accident.
- For all of her Yandereness, Lucy from Elfen Lied. She's cold and deeply cynical, but only because she's been hurt so badly every time she lets her guard down. She may slaughter humans without hesitation or remorse, but her capacity for love is still very real.
- Amu Hinamori, the main character from Shugo Chara, is known as the "cool and spicy" girl at school because of her unique fashion style and her blunt attitude. However, she actually just wants to be normal and girly, and it's actually because she's shy that she puts on a cool girl act.
- Rima arguably qualifies as well - first impressions: dainty, spoiled, yet cold. She's really actually a sweet girl and just needed time to warm up to Amu and her friends. Plus, much like the trope pics of Raven, as serious as Rima is, her "would-be self" is a clown.
- Minami Iwasaki from Lucky Star is a bit of a kuudere, complete with a Morality Pet in tow, though her screen time primarily focuses around her friendships thus showing more of her deredere side than anything else.
- During his rant over tsundere and how the term has changed over the years, Minoru wonders about calling Kagami a kuudere instead.
- Riza Hawkeye from Full Metal Alchemist. She wasn't always as stoic as she is today. Roy Mustang can spark off quite spectacular reactions from her, she has a cute puppy. She's also very warm to Ed when he goes to her home to return the gun she lent him.
- Shikamaru Nara from Naruto.
- Sai qualifies, too.
- Samui could arguably be one, as she really doesn't show any emotion except towards the idea her former sensei's been captured.
- Vash aka Switzerland from Axis Powers Hetalia. This gun-toting, cynical, xenophobic Pesci melts like butter when his little sister Liechtenstein is around.
- Berwald aka Sweden, who is pretty much a Huge Schoolgirl in the body of The Big Guy. Scares everyone with his Face Of A Thug, but he's quite the playful guy on the inside, as his profile mentions.
- Roderich aka Austria, too. Better seen in the strip right after the "Chibitalia" chapter, where much to Hungary's shock he takes up the rest of Chibitalia's daily chores for once.
- And in the Valentines strip, when Germany pointed out that he'd get lost if he went out to purchase a present for his ex-wife Hungary, he opted to make her a gift and ask someone else to give it to her. She was very much "aaaawwww" when she found out.
- Iceland was mentioned to be Hot Blooded inside and keepinng it cool outside. This was thought to be an Informed Ability... but he was shown in the latest Nordic strip being cool in the beginning and almost losing it at the end.
- In fanon, Deadpan Snarker Hong Kong is usually rewritten as a kuudere. Slightly makes sense considering the author's notes on him, which reveal him as a serious prankster.
- Shizuru Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho.
- Golden Darkness (a.k.a. Yami) from To Love Ru.
- Dark Magical Girl Fate, particularly during season 1 of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Later seasons has her "dere" part coming out more, with the "cool" part being reserved for combat.
- Quite a few Dark Magical Girls could probably qualify for this trope.
- Lady Of War and Fate's Worthy Opponent Signum from the second season onwards qualifies, too. After centuries in service of selfish, destructive owners of the Book of Darkness, she developed a perfect Stoic personality... then along comes Hayate, who wastes no time adopting the Wolkenritter and letting them know the warmth of a family for the first time. Of course, her facade melts away. Then comes the third season and her Unison with Agito, who is a literal fire elemental... And I mean, just listen to her theme song
, performed by Kaori Shimizu.
- Nico Robin from One Piece. However, she's usually calmly cheerful as opposed to showing no emotion at all.
- The anime rendition of Ryoma Echizen in The Prince Of Tennis. His kuudere side shows up in relation to his cat, though.
- Hayate The Combat Butler, Athena might fit. There's still a lot to learn about her though.
- Yuki Eiri from Gravitation is cold and aloof because of a troubled past, but gradually warms up to his love interest Shuichi, even breaking down in tears for the first time in six years in front of him. This is much more true for the anime, where he rarely (if ever) loses his cool, as opposed to the manga, where he seems to lose his temper with Shuichi more easily.
- Mion Sonozaki from Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni.
- Trowa Barton from Gundam Wing, specially with Catherine and Quatre.
- And as a part of his Character Development, Heero acts tremendously dere towards his friends and Relena by the end of the series.
- Takumi Fujiwara from Initial D.
- Bridget L. Satelliser, from Freezing.
- In a certain sense Horo from Spice And Wolf, although in her case it's not so much a matter of coldness, than that she's a master of emotional manipulation, shifting through different personalities and moods effortlessly, making it difficult to understand her true emotions, which include fair helpings of loneliness and homesickness.
- Android 18 from Dragonball Z, very Kuu unless she's with Krillin and their daughter, in which she drops her kuu and shows her dere side
- Lucia from Venus Versus Virus.
- Yasuna from Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl.
- Maria Tachibana from Sakura Taisen.
- Shizuku of Kampfer is a fairly aggressive example - kissing her love interest as early as episode 5, and taking him on a date in episode 8.
- Senjougahara Hitagi certainly fits, yet strangely enough is explicitly described as simply "Tsundere" by the characters, including herself.
"Oh, and Araragi-kun, I love you."(In merely 5 episodes, freeing the series from a potential WillTheyOrWontThey).
- She does blur the lines, however. While somewhat cold and aloof, she has good reason for that. But she also pulls out a stapler and a razor blade, threatens the main character with them by shoving them in his face and promises to disfigure him with them if he does anything, then uses them anyway (stapling his face as a warning). All this within minutes of the start of the first episode. Of course, later she runs around him naked, essentially promising to be his love slave (all in a variant of creepy monotone), just to make up for him helping her. What's the proper -dere prefix for "absolutely off her freaking rocker"?
- She and Araragi actually have a conversation classifying her as a tsundere, but in his thoughts Araragi opines that she's more of a "tundra" (a Japanese pronunciation pun on the English definition, and a competing term for the same concept as "kuudere.")
- Yue from Card Captor Sakura starts as The Stoic, then becomes this. Touya, both towards Sakura and Yukito, is this from the start
- The titular heroine of Shoulder A Coffin Kuro, oh so very much.
- Darker Than Black has Hei (Stoic and can be a Jerk Ass, but actually still traumatized from Heaven's War, and god help you if you mess with his nakama) and Kirihara (Cool and professional at first glance, but almost Moe when she lightens up). Yin may also qualify.
- Another Setsuna that qualifies as a Kuudere: Setsuna Meiou aka Sailor Pluto from Sailor Moon.
- Karl-Heinz Schneider from Captain Tsubasa looks cool, professional and proud, but holy shit he's deredere over his parents and his little sister.
- Shizuka Doumeki from XXX Holic. 'Nuff said.
- Yuuko Ichihara as well. For a large portion of the series, she appears to be a rather cold-hearted, calm and calculating woman that seems pretty cynical and grants people's wishes with rather sinister consequences. Later, however, she starts showing her warm, affectionate dere side towards Watanuki... which is made all the more obvious in the touching scene in the manga where she disappears after telling Watanuki that her only wish is for him to continue living, and in turn he swears to wait for her forever.
- Sousuke from Full Metal Panic bounces between being a male version of this and a genuine stoic.
- Hayama from Kodomo No Omocha is definitely a male version of this trope.
- Nagisa Yamada (a middle schooler and hopeful future member of the Self Dense Force) from Satou Kashi No Dangan Wa Uchinukenai seems to have definite Kuudere leanings in the early chapters of the manga. When asked by Umino Masachika to become her "precious friend", Nagisa responds: "I'm not interested in you because you're not a bullet... I don't care for anything else."
- Kanzaki Kaori in To Aru Majutsu No Index
- Baccano has two, Chane and Ennis, both of whom have trouble coming to terms with human emotions, particularly compassion and affection.
- Mirielle of Noir is for most of the series a Bad Ass Action Girl assassin who only occasionally lets her soft side show, but late in the show when she finds Kirika's heartfelt note she starts crying along with the audience.
- Felli Loss of Chrome Shelled Regios
- Male example: Aquarius Camus from Saint Seiya. Also, his disciple Cygnus Hyoga.
- Another male example: Ryu Amakusa from Tantei Gakuen Q
Comic Books
Literature
- Mara Jade falls under this trope pre-Hand Of Thrawn duology; once she's married to Luke, however, she mostly reverts to a mixed-type Tsundere (she can get rather testy under certain circumstances). It's mentioned a few times that her habitual sarcasm is a tactic - angry people say things they might normally keep quiet, and angry people just in general don't think as well, so they don't fight as smart.
- Peggy from The Tales Of Alvin Maker is like this when she first appears in the second book. When Taleswaper asks her mother about Peggy, she tells him she's gone too cold for anyone to tolerate her. He tells her ice can only be thawed with warmth, and then proceeds to get smiles and laughs from Peggy in private.
- Silas from The Graveyard Book is one - he's The Stoic most of the time, but Bod triggers his occasional moments of dere.
- Some Alternate Character Interpretations of Sherlock Holmes. His personality leans very heavily towards the "logical and frosty" side of things, but there are moments, such in "The Three Garridebs," in which he shows flashes of a dere side.
- Elinor, of Sense And Sensibility.
Live Action TV
- T'Pol from Star Trek Enterprise. Using her cold exterior and her repressed but detectable emotions, she typically insults and berates people, but occasionally shows a compassionate side. She usually justifies both sorts of actions as logical, though it is often apparent to the viewer (and recipient) that this is mostly just a rationalization.
- Just like Spock before her.
- And after her, as StarTrek XI demonstrates...
- Kuudere is the Vulcans' hat, given their past, and acknowledged in the latest movie.
- Data on TNG may fit this trope in a wierd way, since it's repeatedly suggested that he does in fact have emotions, but he doesn't understand them and accordingly he writes them off as functions of his brain - he wasn't sad when Tasha died; his brain had just come to recognize and anticipate her mannerisms and "missed" those stimuli when they were gone. By the fourth season, however, the viewers have realized that he's just being sentimental.
- On Farscape, Aeryn Sun.
- Cameron from The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Although she's generally unemotional and dangerously pragmatic, there are a few times when she does seem to show genuine affection. Also, Word Of God has it that she truly does love John (albeit for a given definition of love), and she is certainly willing to die for him.
- Dr. Leslie Winkle in The Big Bang Theory.
- Dr. Lisa Cuddy from House
- Dr. Simon Tam from Firefly. I am is beginning to notice a pattern.
- Inara also has shades of this.
- As does Zoe.
- Ronnie Mitchell from East Enders is a cynical ice queen who keeps other people at arms length, but also a troubled person with a lot of emotional baggage. She even has a morality pet in the form of her sister Roxy, who she treats more like a daughter at times. Nobody's managed to thaw her out yet, though, thanks to the scriptwriters' habit of throwing a spanner in the works every time someone starts to get close to her.
- Horatio Hornblower, at least in the A&E series (and possibly in the novels as well). His introverted nature, combined with the need to maintain a professional demeanor as a naval officer, doesn't lend itself to much emotional demonstrativeness. He does, however, open up to a few people, and he just tries so hard to do the right thing.
- Ned from Pushing Daisies is usually polite yet aloof and snarky, masking his feelings due to his traumatic childhood and avoiding close relationships. Inside? Oh, so dere.
- Both Mako, Shinken Pink, and Takeru, Shinken Red, from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. While Takeru's dere side is rarely scene, Mako's specialty is dealing with her teammate's... many issues quickly and practically. Once you're righted, don't expect a cuddle for the sake of cuddling. Just, uh... avoid any food she offers.
- Ziva from NCIS
- Temperance Brennan so seldom shows her soft side it's easy to think she doesn't have one but she does as shown in an early episode when she's talking to a boy who, like her, grew up in foster homes or in the recent Christmas episode.
Music
- The girl who's the subject of Savage Garden's "To the moon and back" mixes Broken Bird with Kuudere.
They're saying, "Mamma never loved her much"
And, "Daddy never keeps in touch
That's why she shies away from human affection"
But somewhere in a private place she packs her bags for outer space
And now she's waiting for the right kind of pilot to come
And she'll say to him...
She's saying
"I would fly to the moon & back if you'll be...
If you'll be my baby
Got a ticket for a world where we belong
So would you be my baby?"
Video Games
- To various degrees, both Viconia and Jaheira (though they each express it differently) in Baldurs Gate would fit.
- Saber from Fate Stay Night is like this. Arguably in Heaven's Feel, this mantle might've been passed down on Rider. It's difficult to be sweet and caring when you're Medusa, especially when you happen to live in the Nasuverse, land of unhappy people. Look how shocked she gets at a mere 'thank you' or being told that no, Shirou does not hate her and thinks she's actually quite attractive.
- Sora from the visual novel Yosuga no Sora.If you're not her brother, consider yourself the luckiest person in earth if you able to saw her smile. To be more precisely, she is Tsundere to her brother, Yandere to every other girls around her brother, Kuudere to every other boys beside her brother. And you may have noticed already but yeah, she has a sexual desire for her twin brother.
- Another entry from the Nasuverse could be Akiha Tohno from Tsukihime. Usually extremely stoic and haughty around all except her sorority sisters in school and Shiki - but even Shiki has to thaw her out a fair bit, and he only fully does so in Akiha's story path.
-
Possibly Lamia Loveless from Super Robot Wars. On the outlook, she's mostly cool, professional and serious, but considering that she is The Child amongst The Three Faces Of Eve (being the latest version of the W Numbers and hasn't been around for long in the world), her inner side is very dere. In OG Gaiden, she slightly goes deredere to Axel, who saved her life.
- Badass Bookworm Erk from Fire Emblem 7, in a way. He's not the easiest person to coax out of his shell and away from his books, and he's frequently grumpy and sarcastic. But his supports always end up showing his gentler side, especially his supports with Plucky Girl Nino, The Ojou Priscilla and Action Mom Louise. Marisa from the 8th game is a straighter example, especially in her supports with her boss/crush Gerik and Genki Girl Tana.
- Lute, too. Well, sort of. Very similar to Erk in her bookishness, she doesn't quite seem to know how to love properly, but her support with Artur shows an attempt at a softer side. (Like I said, though, she's a bit odd about it.)
- Lucia, the swordmaster from Fire Emblem 9/10. Her support conversations with Bastian shows this side of her pretty well.
- Yet another mage that exhibits these traits is Arthur from the 4th game. When he expresses concern for his friend (and possible love intrest) Phee, she mentions how odd it is that he's thinking of someone other than himself, and he says that she's an "exception". The only other person who he shows his soft side to is his beloved little sister, Tinny.
- Tear Grants from Tales of the Abyss.
- Naoto Shirogane of Persona 4 becomes one if she's the protagonist's love interest.
- Avril from Wild ARMs 5.
- Roswell from Yggdra Union lists on the kuu side of the equation, but every now and again he shows moments of incredibly heartfelt gentleness. Interestingly, many of these moments seem provoked by Yggdra, our lovely protagonist.
- Natsu Ayuhara from Rival Schools is a slight mix of this and Huge Schoolgirl.
- Leona from The King Of Fighters, with a sort-of twist. She fears she'll be dominated by her Enemy Within (Orochi Leona) if she shows emotions openly.... When it happened the first time, she killed her parents and everyone in her Doomed Hometown. The second time, she beat up her teammates Ralf and Clark to almost death.
- Nami from Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.
- Also,Special Edition. Her Magical Melody and DS/Cute counterparts however..
- Tsugumi of Ever17 can be quite rude, but mostly she's merely very calm, aloof and distant.
- Saki Tsuzura in Arcana Heart for the most of time is a pretty aloof girl, but this mostly stems from her failure to save her friend Fiona and her resolve to not repeat the same mistake again. She considerably opens up when she's around her... uh... best friend Heart. Especially after the fight with Mildred is over.
- The sequel also adds up the super serious Zenia Valov. She wastes very little words and most of the time, she's quite confrontational, mostly caring about her missions. In her ending, however, she is seen tending some sort of orphanage and lets out a smile, and the kids were greeting her warmly, signifying that she's really kind and sweet to children.
- Lulu from Final Fantasy X.
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All has Adrian Andrews, who hides her woobieness under her cold, evasive side. She drops her coldness completely in the sequel.
- Lana Skye also definitely qualifies.
- Blaz Blue's Rachel Alucard is like this, though the caring is very hard to see. But when one considers she's playing Xanatos Speed Chess against the psychotic Terumi, who'd do any number of horrible things if he knew she cared about any of the cast, it becomes similar to a mix of this and The Woman Wearing The Queenly Mask. However, various endings suggest she at least has a deal of sympathy for Ragna(who she asks to "not become a monster"), Noel (who she's seen standing near during her "waking up" dreams), and Nu (Who she pities as a "poor doll" who has such simple dreams).
- Yuina Himo-o, the teenage Mad Scientist from Tokimeki Memorial, becomes this if the main character wins her affections.
- The Sten in Dragon Age: Origins is the most stoic and rigidly Lawful Neutral of your party members, rarely getting along with others and preferring to focus on accomplishing your goal as soon as possible. However, Leilana notes that he does indeed have a hidden Gentle Giant aspect to him (which she chides him about) and if the player improves their relationship, he proceeds to become part of the Nakama in his own way, even coming to respect you greatly, the closet thing to affection he allows himself.
- Luminous Arc 2's Fatima the Shadow Frost Witch is pretty darn stoic and cool. Her dere-dere side can be brought out if Roland choose the correct dialogue choices and she becomes his love interest.
Web Comics
- Emily from Misfile started off as one of these but has morphed more into a traditional type B Tsundere as time has gone on. One possible explanation is that as her age regression has taken effect she is suffering from a bad case of The Mind being The Plaything Of The Body. Or else it's Flanderization.
- Or it could just be a side effect of stress.
- Vaarsuvius from Order Of The Stick probably qualifies - sensitive and emotional, yet cool-headed, with an air of detachment that makes him/her difficult to approach.
- As one of the still existing examples of the precursor term "Su-cool" (sunao cool - honest & cool), the "Su-cool
" arc in the "Love Situations" category of Tsunami Channel is a prime example of the honest and cool girl who is blunt and unembarassed by her feelings of affection, while being incredibly understated and calm.
- Miho from Mega Tokyo. A certain sect of the Fandumb reviles her for it.
Web Original
- Himei in Sailor Nothing. At first, she is almost entirely kuu, but as the story goes on her dere starts showing more often.
Western Animation
Real Life
- Every cat in existence is either this or a Tsundere.
- Some are a combination of the two: they have an aloof side and a violent side.
- And some RARE few show their dere side more often than anything (pets his furball, currently snuggling in his lap)
- Cats oscillate between [[tsundere]]-like arrogance and pure [[yandere]] affection. They wuv you, but if you double-cross them you will suffer a swift and sharp punishment. And they hunt critters for fun.
- Social phobia, avoidant personality disorder, or just plain shyness can come off as Kuudere.
- This is the most popular stereotype for Israelis.
- Queen Victoria. Just read some of her journal entries on Prince Albert, and then compare it to her normal personality.
