Mykyta is suspicious. In this thread they posted a college essay-related link.
open"Moral Event Horizon" Discussion Web Original
I want to add an example of Moral Event Horizon, but I know that I need to discuss it with other tropers first.
Where do I go for that?
openGofundme link Web Original
I recently heard about the potential legal trouble that the SCP Foundation community could be in due to a Russian man filing an illegitimate trademark with the Eurasian Customs Union and I want to help raise awareness for the problem by temporarily replacing my forum signature with a link to the gofundme page for the site's lawsuit against the man and making a brief mention of it on the cleanp forums for Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard forums. Would this be against wiki policy? I feel like this is important especially since problems for that site may cause issues for this one as well.

Edited by FighteeropenX meets Y: Characters issue Videogame
A while ago, a user named numbahloki16 deleted a bunch of entries on the 'X Meets Y' Video Game Characters' page, as shown in the edit history page, they deleted everything under the Xenogears examples. Should I add them back to the page? I believe they did it accidentally, and I know it's a "Just for Fun" page, but I'm unsure of adding them again because I'm afraid that an edit war might happen.
Edited by Excessive-MenaceopenBLAM (BigLippedAlligatorMoment) Western Animation
Two quick questions. One: Would the Pancake Bunny bit from Ralph Breaks the Internet being one of The Stinger scenes instead of the actual movie liklye to prevent it from being a BLAM still count as it being such? Second, would the item go on the Trvia for the movie or the YMMV?
openProblem Troper
Xueshua has a habit of deleting stuff without edit reasons or preceding discussion. Their deletions include:
- the quote on Space Jews
- the page image on Penal Colony
- part of the description on Old Fashioned Copper and Police Brutality
- part of the description on Mammy
- all Deliberate Values Dissonance examples on Aubrey-Maturin and Horatio Hornblower, as well as all Values Dissonance examples from YMMV.AubreyMaturin
- a passage on UsefulNotes.RebelsWithRepeaters
- also they swapped the quote on National Animal Stereotypes (the new quote seems to fit, but they gave no explanation for why the old one was bad)
I don't know whether the deletions are "good", but it seems advisable to check (edit history). I also pm'ed Xueshua about this query.
openDeleting image uploads
Can you delete an image you upload to the site? Or does it get automatically deleted if it's not actually used?
openLimiting vitriol/harsh edits on a YMMV page. Web Original
I’m the creator of a web original project, Diamond In The Rough, a Touhou self-insert fic part-deconstruction part-satire, and I also overlook the trope pages for it.
Recently, there’ve been some patronizing edits, but I’m not sure how to go about it. The edits have some legit complaints, but the wording feels hostile. If I’m not mistaken, the rules for creators on their own YMMV pages are stricter, but at the same time, what if an edit broke TV Tropes’ guidelines, but the creator wanted to clean up said edits while maintaining the essence of the complaints?
Here is the page in question: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/DiamondInTheRoughTouhou
As you can tell by the recent edit history (in addition to me hitting enter too quickly and having to redo my edit reason separately), some of the edits were either less-than-flattering or just outright broke the rules. If it’s against the rules for me to edit this, I guess let me know and revert the page, though somebody else will have to clean it all up.
I’d rather leave the person who made the edits out of this since, again, they had common complaints, plus it seems by the fast edits it was done in the heat of passion. I just mainly wanna know what I, as the creator, can do to clean up the language/what I can do in general within the creator’s guidelines.
Edited by SpaztiqueopenNew Page
Dinogal 95 just created Scottish Actors And Comedians. It's just a page that lists scottish actors and comedians, nothing more. This isn't kosher right?
Edit: They might just be in the process of tidying it up. I'm not sure. It's just very bare bones right now, and I don't think in the right namespace or index.
Edited by jjjj2openTVLubber's edit
TV Lubber just recently deleted this example from We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story.
- Karma Houdini: Captain Neweyes. While it's true that Professor Screweyes is a twisted individual, Neweyes was the one who thought bringing dinosaurs to present-day New York was a good idea. It wasn't. Rex nearly drowns, their appearance causes a panic, they run amok as they try to escape the NYPD, and Screweyes gets a hold of 'em and nearly gets eaten for his trouble. While everything works out in the end, the fact that Neweyes is responsible for all the following chaos is never addressed.
Here was their edit reason.
"Screweyes caused all the chaos. He chose to take advantage of it. Neweyes never wanted it to happen, and never expected Screweyes to do such a thing."
Speaking as someone who's seen the movie...what do you mean "Screweyes caused all the chaos"? Sure, Screweyes was the one who captured them and made them work in his circus, but Neweyes was the one who dropped them off in New York in the first place. It's Neweyes' fault that the dinosaurs caused a panic and ran amok. Screweyes hasn't even appeared at this point, he's only mentioned.
openWe gotta talk about Charlotte Flair
I'm seeing a lot of X-Pac Heat-type entries on her YMMV page. I'm not going to say there's nothing to these entries but there are people who react positively to her, and I don't see any effort to acknowledge this.
It doesn't help that at least one of the tropes that might allow this have a lengthy waiting period. I'm not sure how to proceed though.
openOverlapping edits
I was editing the page Characters.Honkai Impact3rd Playable Characters, but when I submitted it, none of the changes take place. I figured out it's because someone else was also editing the page at the time.
Is there anything that could be done for this?
openSpiritual Successor vs Spiritual Adaptation
What's the difference between Spiritual Successor and Spiritual Adaptation? It seems to be that Spiritual Adaptation is YMMV and it's when the works are in a different medium, and not created by the creators of the original work, but a lot of the examples in Spiritual Successor seem like fan comparisons.
openWhat's the merit of this format correction?
I frequently see tropers correcting line breaks in quotes the following way. It doesn't seem to improve the look or anything. What's the goal?

openMemetic Loser misused?
From Memetic Loser and MemeticLoser.Video Games
- Undertale: Mettaton NEO, who doesn't even attack and only takes exactly one hit.
- Pokémon:
- If there is a single Pokémon that is the most well known for being flat out terrible, it's Luvdisc, a pink heart-shaped Pokémon based on a discus fish. Its stats are comparable to basic Pokémon, but it doesn't evolve, nor does it stand out in any other way apart from occasionally holding the rather useful Heart Scales. This feature did not help it as much in later generations, where Heart Scales — the main reason for anyone to catch one in its debut generation — could be farmed from other sources, providing little reason for anyone to catch one. The final nail in the coffin was in the 8th generation, where you can now relearn moves — which previously required Heart Scales — at Pokémon Centers for free, making Luvdisc effectively obsolete (and that's without mentioning that neither Luvdisc nor Heart Scales are programmed into Sword and Shield). Whenever Luvdisc comes up on discussions about competitive battling, people will spend most of the article on how bad it is. Could've changed if Game Freak made Alomomola its evolved form, but they got kept separate.
- Second to Luvdisc is Spinda, whose only defining characteristic is there are over 4 million possible sprites and textures for it.
- There's also Delibird who, similar to the previous two, has stats comparable to a basic unevolved Pokémon, and has the worst Hidden Ability ever thanks to Department of Redundancy Department.
- Pokémon that have fallen victim to a Nerf or the general Power Creep of the series are bound to be made fun of by at least part of the fanbase. The biggest victim of this is probably Flareon.
- Talonflame became an even bigger example of this as of the 7th generation, where it suffered what can only be described as a Trauma Conga Line of nerfs. First, Gale Wings was nerfed to only work when the user is at full HP (meaning Stealth Rock, already a bad move for Talonflame, ruins it) Then, three Pokemon were introduced with abilities that outright block priority. (Bruxish, Tsareena and Tapu Lele) Finally, Talonflame's true nightmare, a priority Rock type move, was introduced. (Talonflame takes 4x damage from Rock moves) It quickly went from one of the most feared competitive Pokemon to the butt of many jokes.
- Delphox in Pokémon X and Y, who is mocked for not being as good as Greninja. It mainly suffers from a middling offensive typing, a lackluster hidden ability and Poor, Predictable Rock (Which is especially egregious since it's a sorcerer, which normally have very diverse movesets in other games), but many now use the Kalos Fire Starter as an example of how far Psychic types have fallen since their reign of terror in Gen I.
- Out of all the Starter Pokémon though, the one considered to be the absolute worst is Chikorita. In its debut game, it does poorly against the majority of the challenges the game throws at you. It has no advantage against any of the Johto Gyms and Elite Four outside of one or two cases and does poorly against Team Rocket's Poison Pokémon. It also has poorly distributed stats (It's meant to be a Mighty Glacier, but its pure Grass typing leaves it with a myriad of weaknesses) and a shallow movepool. About the only thing it has going for it is that it's very cute and remains so as it evolves. It has gained some popularity among fans of Team Four Star thanks to Mr. Stake.
- Of the Ultra Beasts introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon, the one that's easily considered the worst is Guzzlord. Despite having high stats, roughly half of it goes straight to Hit Points while a significant chunk of it left goes towards its attacking stats, leaving it unable to take hits and very slow. It's telling that while every other Ultra Beast are in the Uber, Over Used or Under Used tiers, Guzzlord is in the Never Used tier. Stakataka is also considered unusable by many despite its high attack and defense stats, as it is incredibly slow and has two crippling weaknesses to Ground and Fighting type attacks.
- My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:
- Spitfire has earned this as well. According to Rainbow Dash, she's allegedly a legendary hero to Equestria, but she's way less impressive than given credit for, usually gets dispatched easily by other serious threats, needs to actually be taught lessons from her recruit Rainbow Dash, and has an Embarrassing Nickname that's so bad that she needs to whisper it into her friend's ear so nobody else knows.
- The Pony of Shadows has got this due to his Anti-Climax Boss and They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character statuses (he doesn't even have any Crazy-Prepared-ness to make up for his lack of onscreen action). In fact, a lot of fans even believe that between him and The Storm King (another recent "winner" of this "award"), the latter was the more-effective Big Bad note For at least being able to pull off a Near-Villain Victory, not to mention having Tempest Shadow as his Heavy.!
- Princess Celestia doesn't get this treatment as often as the characters mentioned above, but due to her being a common victim of The Worf Effect, she's gotten hit with the label.
Prior ATT agreed that Memetic Loser must explain why their loser reputation is exaggerated, otherwise it's complaining about objective loses. The Pokemon I intend to cut as Tier Induced Scrappy and Spitfire cut as Faux Action Girl. The Pony of Shadows can be reworked as it took a Heroic Sacrifice of the old heroes to stop the first time, and it's easy defeat was meant to show how much more powerful the current ones are then the old, and its taking as long as it did to be defeated by the Elements of Harmony is the best feat of villain power to date.
Celestia and Mettaton NEO I'll cut as the losses are objective, but first I ask if they fit Memetic Badass better as fans seem to exaggerate the effectiveness such they're labeled Memetic Loser in backlash for not living up to it. Should they be moved there?
Any objection to the cuts/moves?
openAdministrivia proposal on TLP still on hold
I found this old draft in the TLP, Administrivia/No Played With Examples, Please!, it was put on hold but wasn't touched in almost two years. Since, by the rules, the TLP shouldn't be used for proposing Administrivia pages, shouldn't it be finally discarded?
openEditing issues
Boss Ham Ham has some editing issues; I'd send a notifier, but not only have they openly ignored a notifier I've sent before, their editing issues were also reported back in May.
They aren't crosswicking the tropes they launch, they're still getting indentation wrong, (with the second one also linking to a YMMV page on a main work page, to boot!), while also posting a Main/ IUEO example on a YMMV page...
All of the edits mentioned are super recent, btw... I barely had to dig to find them.
Edited by WarJay77openMarking tropes as spoilers: a question
Somewhat new troper here. I was curious if someone with more experience could clarify the "don't mark tropes as spoilers" question. I had a scenario where marking the trope as a spoiler seemed like a good idea.
There's an RPG Maker game called [1] that establishes early on (as in the game's description on the Steam/itch.io page) that the game takes place in the dreams of the 8-year old protagonist. Early on the game's page is the trope Adventures in Comaland. A late-game twist establishes that Jimmy has terminal cancer and the game is basically his final coma dream where he's trying to overcome his weakness and forgive himself so he can die peacefully. Having that trope sitting out there unspoiled seems like a big spoiler because it establishes the true nature of Jimmy's dream.
So why would I not be allowed to mark it as a spoiler in that case? It's a case where it seems like it should be marked, but I wanted a TV Tropes veteran's explanation/opinion.
openWhat exactly is a "Wick" on this site and how do you count it?
So out of curiousity, I checked the Trope Overdosed page and at first glance, it appears to be a list of works on the site which tropers or Entry Pimps loved to comprehensively write every possible trope available. However, it seems to be much more complex than that since the page uses "wicks" as a metric. My questions would be:
- How is it totalled? Do you have to go through the "Related" tab and count the "Found in X articles"? What pages and subpages are counted, do we also included YMMV, Trivia, and "Moments pages?
- Let's say I now understand the criteria to label a work as Trope Overdosed, but can I simply edit the Trope Overdosed page normally? Or do I need to go to a dedicated thread to prove that the work has a lot of tropes in them and provide numbers?
- Where does Trope Overdosed go? In the Main page of the work? Or in the Trivia tab?
For context, I believe gacha games like Fate/Grand Order, Granblue Fantasy, Azur Lane, etc... naturally would have a lot of tropes in them because A) Gacha games have Loads And Loads Of Characters by nature, and B) They are a live service of games, receiving constant updates, which means more tropes pop the longer they are active, and they last for years.
I'm trying to add the Trope Overdosed trope in these gacha games or update their context, as well as adding these works to the Trope Overdosed page if possible. But even I seem confused on how "wicks" are counted now...
What is the trope where the school-idol or similar character falls in love with the one person unaffected by their charms.
