Thread created as a spin-off of an Ask The Tropers thread.
There have been some recurring problems when it comes to how to refer to a character due to them being potentially transgender, such as Yamato or Snapdragon, or has other circumstances that make their gender identity/pronouns unclear. While in the past each character has gotten their own dedicated thread, the latest problem when it comes to how to interpreted Bridget has raised an opinion that there should be more of a general thread discussing these topics in case any future problems come up. Preferably we should discuss one character at a time before moving up to the next character.
Queries about references to a character's deadname are also on-topic here.
Spoilers in the thread must be tagged.
As a rule of thumb, using they/them in cases where the character's gender is unclear is acceptable.
If someone disregards consensus that was established here, particularly if a character is clearly trans and someone is trying to deny that, it's something to report on Ask The Tropers rather than here.
Spoilers in this "Resolved characters" folder are unmarked.
- General policy on characters who reincarnate/gain new bodies, and have their gender change when they do so (in specific, Eternals (2021), Doctor Who): When discussing a particular incarnation/body, use the pronouns the work and its characters used for the character in that form. When a character has used different pronouns at different times (e.g. for different incarnations), default to they/them pronouns if discussing the character overall. Discussion begins here.

Would it be best to just put a rule of thumb they/them for cases like these just for quick reference? No horse in this race, but might be helpful for some if the more open-and-shut cases.
Sounds like a useful thing to clarify.
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faerSounds good.
Trans rights are human rights.Added "As a rule of thumb, using they/them in cases where the character's gender is unclear is acceptable." to the header.
Macron's notesThat sounds fine to me in general.

Be kind.Sounds good to me.
Macron already added that line to the header four days ago, so we should probably get back to using the thread for its intended purpose. And either way, I don't think she was holding a vote to begin with because she said that she added the line, not that she was asking whether to add it

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Got it, apologies Gaston. Will rerail.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallIs this a good time for me to bring up Hollow Knight again, then? I'd still like to push it to a resolution.
The Revolution Will Not Be TropeableI don't know Hollow Knight too well but if the game uses "it" then we should use "it".

Trans rights are human rights.Agreed.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢this one shouldn't be too much of a concern; omochao has historically been referred to as he/him, but sega has enacted a new policy recently that all chao are gender-neutral, with omochao using they/them pronouns in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. would it be okay to change their entry on Characters.Sonic The Hedgehog Recurring Characters to reflect that? want to ask so it isn't unilateral
for they/them for Omochao. Is this also seen with other notable Chao such as Cheese?
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!cheese is referred to as they/them in the IDW comics, but this hasn't come up in the games yet as far as i'm aware. the policy does seem to be that all chao are gender-neutral, so if cheese or other notable chao were to have a role in a new sonic game they'd probably use they/them there, but it'd be best to wait until it happens i think

They/them for Omochao. Game!Cheese should stay he/him for now just to be safe, but IDW!Cheese should be referred to with they/them if they aren't already.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢In Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill, would Sui be they/them, or it/its?
The light novel uses "it/its" for Sui, whereas the anime adaptation uses "it/them/him" interchangeably (there's some leeway based on the particular translation and subtitle source, but the actual dubbing seems fairly gender-neutral).
For reference, Sui a genderless slime, who, when asked whether they were a boy or a girl, responded with "Sui is a Sui".

Is this 2020 article the source or there is a new one, for reference?
What's also noteworthy about this news is that it’s not a lone writer making guesswork of Sonic lore, but SEGA themselves made it policy to refer to all Chao this way. We see here that SEGA is still very much involved in and concerned with how the series is portrayed in media outside of the games, and they are willing to make changes or outright retcon things
I just went ahead and nipped this in the bud by adding "they/them" to the header because I'm getting Single-Issue Wonk vibes from the push for "he/she".
