Do you have trouble remembering the difference between Deathbringer the Adorable and Fluffy the Terrible?

Do you have trouble recognizing when you've written a Zero-Context Example?

Not sure if you really have a Badass Bookworm or just a guy who likes to read?

Well, this is the thread for you. We're here to help you will all the finer points of example writing. If you have any questions, we can answer them. Don't be afraid. We don't bite. We all just want to make the wiki a better place for everyone.

Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

  • Outside Joke: The bulk of the entry is about the IRL stuff. There isn't even info on the joke itself, so...

[up][up][up][up]

  • Shout-Out: I guess stolen assets are technically still a reference.
  • Adaptation Displacement: No, that's the same work. You're not going to say the CD version of an album is better known than the Spotify release.

[up][up] A Shout-Out has to be deliberate, and I don’t think the developers wanted people to play the game and think “hey, they referenced Gingy from Shrek.

Put another way: we don't really have something for stolen assets. However, I think that can charitably be described as a Shout-Out, since taking that design is certainly deliberate on the part of the ripper-offers. (and isn't "hey, that's Gingy from Shrek!" that type of reaction anyway...?)

For the record, a "recycled asset" (or even a "common asset" for free-to-use) Trivia item wouldn't be too bad an idea.

There was an example on the Trivia pages that tried to use UsefulNotes.Plagiarism as a trope for the Gingy thing (which I removed). Prop Recycling is about movie set props and such, so it wouldn't fit.

This was in Madame's section on Characters.RWBY Solitas:

This trope applies only if the disgrace is unrelated to the victim's act. Is this a valid example?

Reposting from the previous page:

Is the following example from Birds of Prey (2020) being used correctly, since is supposed to be when a work is released in another media before it makes it's "official" debut in theatres or on tv. Where as this example mentions it when to VOD after it had been in theatres, and the example is already covered under a Release Date Change example on the same page?:

And from the same page if the character's nationality is never mentioned in the film, then doesn't this example fall under Speculative Troping?:
Still from the same page, does this example seem like a stealth-"Detractor Nickname" example?:
  • Fan Nickname: Fans of the Cassandra Cain character have started referring to the girl in this film as "Kassandra Kane" as a way to distance her even further.

[up]I agree with every point you raise. I say cut Early-Bird Release as misuse and Fan Nickname as a complaint (even though it's fairly light). Not sure about Fake Nationality but I lean towards cutting because her ethnicity doesn't really come up in the movie and the entry even admits it's more likely Race Lift.

These are on YMMV.Holmes And Watson:

  • Bile Fascination: Quite a few people went to see the movie purely after hearing just how bad it supposedly was.
  • Designated Hero: Will Ferrell as Holmes is very difficult to take seriously as a hero thanks to his constant demeaning of Watson and his harebrained antics.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The trailer for the film wasn't exactly well-received, due to the presence of many unfunny gags.

Not sure if any of these are being used correctly.

On Trivia.Doki Doki Panic, there's an entry on Names The Same that I feel should be removed. For starters, Names The Same is about characters, and the entry is comparing names of works. Secondly, it is important that the entire name is the same. Just because "Doki Doki Panic" and "Doki Doki Literature Club" start with the same two words, doesn't mean the example fits. I would have deleted the entry myself (and I admit I should have done so a long time ago, as it's an old entry), but I had already edited the page when someone added this trying-too-hard-to-be-clever "THANK GOD" interjection and I deleted it as it was unnecessary. Worse yet, someone else brought it back, and I'd be edit-warring if I edited again. Please respond as soon as you can.

"Doki Doki" is just Japanese onomatopoeia for a beating heart. It's not even a super niche phrase. Names The Same isn't for works that share one or two words.

[down] It's misuse, you can cut it.

From South Park: The Pandemic Special:

  • Just Here for Godzilla: Even for those who don't watch South Park a lot tune in to see this episode simply because of its longer running time and what it has to say about COVID-19 and 2020 in general

Poor grammar aside, since the commentary on COVID-19 is the focus of the episode, I don't think it counts as the "Godzilla," right?

Reposting since I'm not sure if my edits to Music.Dua Lipa are incorrect tropes:

  • Frozen in Time: Since "Future Nostalgia" launched, the general aesthetic is that of The '80s for most of the videos, with Retraux used to ensure this is an Enforced Trope; right down to the Stylistic Suck of her video for "Levitating".
  • Retraux: As of Future Nostalgia, this has become a very defining trait in both the sound of her music and in the videos themselves, mostly with The '80s influences on video - a sort of film-like look is used.
  • Stylistic Suck: Downplayed. The video for "Levitating" is intentionally done to look like 1980s-style special effects, and the outfits are as Period Piece as you can get although it's a Satire/Parody/Pastiche.

Would this qualify for the Designated Hero trope?

  • The Waffle from the 2002 Waf-Fulls commercials. Because it's meant to sell the product, the audience is supposed to cheer for it hunting down and eating the sentient filling in order to stuff itself and become the titular Waf-Full. Not helping the Waffle's case is how the filling screams in terror even before it's attacked, and that said fillings are just minding their own business and enjoying life otherwise.

It would fall under the Advertising section of the trope page since it lacks a works page.

[up][up][up]To be fair, Just Here for Godzilla doesn't seem to have a lot of restrictions about what the "Godzilla" is. It apparently drew in non-fans, and COVID-19 is not the main thrust of South Park, so I think it counts.

[up][up]That is not an example of Frozen in Time, which is when a work is linked to a specific time period. She did one eighties-themed album, presumably by choice. Retraux — rewrite to avoid Examples Are Not Recent and focus on Future Nostalgia; we do not know if she will stick with the '80s theme going forward.

[up]Seems more like Villain Protagonist.

[up] I'll cut Frozen in Time from that page.

Would it still qualify as Stylistic Suck replicating the 1980s in a video?
