Useful Tips:

  • Make sure that the example makes sense to both people who don't know the work AND don't know the trope.
    • Wrong: The Mentor: Kevin is this to Bob in the first episode.
    • Right: The Mentor: Kevin takes Bob under his wing in the first episode and teaches him the ropes of being a were-chinchilla.
  • Never just put the trope title and leave it at that.
    • Wrong: Badass Adorable
    • Right: Badass Adorable: Xavier, the group's cute little mascot, defeats three raging elephants with both hands tied behind his back using only an uncooked spaghetti noodle.
  • When is normally far less important than How.
    • Wrong: Big Bad: Of the first season.
    • Right: Big Bad: The heroes have to defeat the Mushroom Man lest the entirety of Candy Land's caramel supply be turned into fungus.
  • A character name is not an explanation.

[up] and Bullman. It's not Word of Gay, that's when Word of God states someone was Gay all along despite it being ambigious/not present in their actual work. This isn't Word of God so it can't be Word of Gay.

Looks like Shipper on Set to me. That article says:

Note that an actor's preferred ship is not Word of Saint Paul, since it's their opinion, rather than any concrete fact about the work. However, an actor's ship preferences may include statements that do fall under Word of Saint Paul, such as behind-the-scenes commentary about scenes deliberately being played more romantically or ad-libbing extra lines not present in the script.

A while ago, someone removed this entry (it was in Characters.Toy Story Lotso but now his page has been merged back to Characters.Toy Story Sunnyside Daycare Toys) under the edit reason, "Desperation is not the same as entitlement."

    The entry (contains major spoilers)
* Entitled Bastard: Even though he had enslaved other toys and put them through Cold-Blooded Torture, he pleads for some of them to rescue him from being shredded at the dump, which was his own fault to begin with. Woody and Buzz do grant him his wish, but realize their mistake when he betrays them and their friends by leaving them all to be incinerated.
Of course, this is a valid removal, right? (I just want to be sure.)

On YMMV.Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales:

  • Angst Aversion: Jack Sparrow, an iconic and beloved character well know for being a cunning, secretly brilliant chessmaster with a Hidden Heart of Gold spends the entire movie falling into his worst tendencies. Falling into a depressive state where he can't properly do a single smart move to save his ass and has to depend from the rest of people who now had grown to despise him because of his failures, to top it all he spends most of the movie drunk out of his skull and sad with no sign of Character Development on the way. Needless to say a lot of fans didn't want to see such a beloved character being a pale shadow of his former self, leading to a lot of older fans to skip it.

I feel like this is misuse, since the film isn't angsty in the slightest. Also, the film's ending implies that Jack is back to normal (even though they botch the execution), so it's not like that's the canon, final fate of the character. The entry reads as an exaggeration or misreading of the film.

Maybe the sentiment fits something like Character Derailment better. Cut?

Just added to Bury Your Art:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 was excluded from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a Compilation Re-release of 3D Mario games for the Switch, as well as the ending montage of the Nintendo Direct meant to celebrate the series' 35th anniversary, all despite it being one of the series' most beloved entries, leading to jokes about how Nintendo is bent on denying the game's existence and systematically removing all mentions of it.

Does it really count if we don't know why Nintendo isn't re-releasing the game anymore? Like the entry says, it seems to come more from jokes and memes than an actual concrete "Nintendo regrets making it" reason.

It's probably as simple as it being a Mission-Pack Sequel that at first glance isn't as distinguishable from Galaxy 1, so using imagery from Galaxy 1 is enough. As for 3D All-Stars, it's probably more balanced that each game represents a single console and generation.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up] Cut

From Men Are the Expendable Gender

  • The Incredibles: Both Mirage and Evelyn Deavor/Screenslaver have managed to survive further than Syndrome ever did in their respective apperarances.

This just seems to be “two female villains survive longer than one male villain” which I’m pretty sure this isn’t what this trope is about.

From Fanfic.Blaster The Wigglytuff Guild Massacre

  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed. Lucy is arrested for the shooting she committed, but since the public somehow doesn't know that she came from the human world, they never learn about the five murders she committed there, and therefore, she doesn't get punished for them, just the 20 murders she committed during the shooting.
    • Though technically speaking she will still be executed as punishment for her crimes in the pokmeon world, and is thus being unknowingly punished for her murders in the human world as well. Justice will still be served to her either way, even if the pokemon prosecutors don't know of her other crimes.

Somehow, I don't think Lucy not being explicitly punished for murders she committed in one world makes her a Karma Houdini if her actions in another world led to her being condemned to death anyway.

Crosses the Line Twice: The protagonist does reprehensible things, such as act indifferently when his eight wives attempted suicide and stealing the job from someone who needed it more than him. But the film's comic timing and surreal effects make it difficult to take everything seriously.

Flirting Scholar. This sounds more like Narm or Unintenitionall... something. I thinks as easy as just going "Prevents the audience from taking it too seriously, making it succeed as comedy" but I have never watched this film so I dont know if that's true either.

I wasn't sure if this counts as a Minus World or not. The MC creates a dungeon meant for adventurers to fight monsters and collect loot & treasures. This is a physical location they go to, not a video game. In the Randomly Generated Levels a mage uses gravity magic, which breaks the floor and drops them into the maintenance tunnels, something they aren't supposed to enter. They mistake it for a new section of the dungeon.

For context, adventurers and dungeons have a symbiotic relationship in this world but this dungeon has several off-limit areas for different reasons, including factories to produce the monsters and loot.

From Infidelity Index, seems like a big stretch.

  • Playing Sick: For the version of the trope where one member of a couple (normally, a man) is in the mood, but the other (normally, the woman) feigns a sickness (normally, a headache) in order not to have sex. Usually, this will happen repeatedly, and it's implied (if not explicit) that she doesn't really love or isn't attracted to him, or even that she's having an affair with someone else.

[down]Okay maybe this was the wrong thread.

[up](x9) Easy cut since, as you stated, he's a real guy and Badass Decay doesn't allow Real Life examples.

[up](x6) Maybe it could work as a subversion of Gone Horribly Wrong but I don't think it's a played straight example because the consequences weren't completely awful for her.

[up](x3) If it has absolutely no Foreshadowing, then I feel it could count.

[up][up]Since that doesn't involve the level only being accessible via hacking or glitches, I don't feel that counts as Minus World.

[up]I think it counts as Playing Sick because it involves a character pretending to be sick for something.

For Berserk Button to count, does the specific trigger have to show up multiple times? I'm asking because I've seen at least one troper say that it has to.

Copied from that ATT since asking here is more appropriate.

A recent edit on the Gundam SEED Main Characters page switched Official Couple to Beta Couple here for Athrun and Cagalli : https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Characters.MobileSuitGundamSEEDMainCharacters&page=4#edit40337667

A little context first : Athrun and Cagalli (the Beta Couple of the edit) are still main characters of the overall franchise and they are the second couple of the Cosmic Era, behind Kira and Lacus (the Official Couple of the edit). In fact, Athrun is the deuteragonist of the franchise for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny until Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom where he loses his deuteragonist status to Lacus. Lacus and Cagalli, while still main characters, are behind in importance compared to Kira and Athrun in the first two works (and also Shinn in SEED Destiny) and in the third, Athrun and Cagalli didn't have much screentime, being Demoted to Extra. One more thing, Kira and Lacus didn't really hook up in SEED, they are somewhat a couple in SEED Destiny (a Chastity Couple to be exact but still a couple) but their couple really only blossoms in SEED Freedom.

My questions :

  • Are the Official Couple and Beta Couple tropes mutually exclusive ? I personally think not but I prefer asking first.
  • The Beta Couple page cites that the Beta Couple is a secondary couple being a foil to the main couple, I agree with that but they are not that secondary compared to Kira and Lacus. But also cites that things goes usually smoother than the main couple, while I agree that Athrun and Cagalli are indeed the Beta Couple in that sense for Kira and Lacus in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (due to both Athrun and Cagalli being Demoted to Extra), this is not the case in the previous work Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny where they face far more hardships than Kira and Lacus where their couple goes well in SEED Destiny. In fact, even in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, before becoming a couple, Athrun and Cagalli encounters were far from nice (to say the least) compared to Kira and Lacus who never have an argument on screen in SEED and SEED Destiny. With this context, are Athrun and Cagalli really a Beta Couple ? Maybe an inverted one ?

After reflexion and overall in the Cosmic Era, I think both Kira/Lacus and Athrun/Cagalli are Beta Couple to each other : Kira/Lacus have things going smoother for them in SEED Destiny (and arguably SEED) than Athrun/Cagalli while the situation is reversed in SEED Freedom where Kira/Lacus faces hardships while Athrun/Cagalli didn't have problems in their couple.

I am inclined to restore Athrun/Cagalli Official Couple entry and adding a Beta Couple entry for both couples. But I wanted opinions first before doing so. And also to prevent edit wars.

Thoughts on that ?

I already have one feedback but I am interested in others.

Official Couple and Beta Couple, as defined, are mutually exclusive. You get one of each per work, and the difference is that one is typically for the main protagonist(s) and undergoes a lot of strife, while the other is for supporting characters and is healthier or at least less volatile.

An Official Couple cannot be a Beta Couple by definition. Not every work has to have every trope.

[up][up] Duly noted on the Official Couple and Beta Couple definitions.

But by that, then the Official Couple page must be really cleaned up as I see lots of examples in it (well the Anime and Manga has lots of them) which includes many many characters from supporting casts, most can serve as Beta Couple (whose examples are also listed in both Official Couple and Beta Couple pages). But that's another subject which has no place here.

But my example is quite complicated I think, hence why I am asking and I still don't have a clear answer for my second point.

[up][up][up]Random Troper 123 While it wasn't a glitch per se, it was a design flaw that allowed them access to the area. The section of the dungeon that changes daily is more fragile than the rest of it because of how the rooms move around.
