just gonna put this here: wick check and opening for Hollywood Thin, when theres space

     description of the issue

Really no clear definition of what this trope even is.

According to the description its: "the media's tendency to present women far skinnier than the average person as attractive, healthy and average/normal."

Actually im kind of uncomfortable with that description anyway— since its pretty much saying that women significantly skinnier than average are NOT attractive and healthy. Then it goes on to talk about shoulder width and rib cage depth, which, again, are not healthy OR unhealthy, theyre neutral genetic traits. Its also unclear if "giant breasts" is part of the requirement, or just noting that they are also unusually common in hollywood.

There could be a trope in "average women in movies are far skinnier than the real life average" or "every (attractive) female character in this show is very slender", but if there is, it sure isn't present in these examples. Maybe 2/50 fit that description

The laconic says its when underweight is presented as average, which, again, might be a trope, but is totally not what the rest of the page talks about.

So, what are the examples about, then?

(6/50) Character has an eating disorder

  • Adventures in Odyssey Whit thinks she's 15 or 16) into diets, makeup and not letting her hang out with kids her age to the point where Monica - who ran away into the forest after being unable to lose enough weight for a particular dress
  • Total Divas Hollywood Pudgy/Hollywood Thin: Deconstructed. Nikki gets offended when a fan calls her fat on Instagram and spends the episode fretting about her body weight. Similarly Brie panics about an upcoming photoshoot and goes on a ridiculous cleanse where she drinks nothing but juice for twenty days.
  • Characters/Reba Hollywood Thin: Sue apparently aspires to be this. Despite being very fit for her age, many jokes are made about how she starves herself and exercises almost constantly, the latter of which she is usually shown doing whenever she appears. Case in point, she won't eat Reba's food. She'll stare at it and comment it looks good.
  • /My Year of Rest and Relaxation Hollywood Thin: Rava desperately wants to be thinner despite being a size 4 and is jealous of the narrator's thinness (she is significantly thinner than a 4). The narrator is also treated as beautiful by everyone (including herself).
  • Kristal Marshall was known for having a very skinny figure while she was in WWE. She later confessed that she barely ate at all while she was on the road - and claimed that she was "dangerously underweight". She was a much healthier weight when she appeared in TNA.
  • The Real World Chicago Skeletons Hollywood Thin: she has struggled with eating disorders in the past.

(4/50) in Real Life, the actors/models are pressured to be skinny

  • Average-sized Amber Benson was criticized for her weight on fansite boards, despite being only large compared to her thin costars.
  • Love Island Hollywood Thin: Another controversy that's followed the show around is that, in eight seasons, they've never had a plus-size or non-thin (and that means very thin) competitor.
  • Tabloids. Pick one up at random and you'll see a Shocking Exposé of some star's "embarrassing body flab" or cellulite (which roughly nine out of ten women have), accompanied by ancient stock swimsuit pics. Anyone with ten pounds of extra fat or more is considered "struggling with weight problems."
  • The Kpop industry (and Asian pop industry in general) is (in)famous for having ridiculous size standards for their idols, especially the female ones. Extreme diets (like only having water and a cracker as a meal) and an ungodly amount of hours of dance practices are the norm, which has them looking inhumanly thin. There have even been some instances of performers fainting on-stage or just after presentations from exhaustion and malnutrition.

(4/50) Extended discussion of real actors body size and weight gain/loss

  • Bridget Jones presented a Values Dissonance example. To pass as the British everywoman (who obsesses over a weight of 125-138 lbs), Renée Zellweger had to put on 20 pounds to carry the part. This wasn't much of an issue in Britain, but in America this put her outside the realm of "Hollywood starlet." Renee had to lose the weight before she could get Hollywood jobs again, surprising many British fans of the film with her rail-thin physique. She gained the weight back for the second film but not the third - and there was a line from Bridget mentioning that she was now at her ideal weight.
  • Eminem lost the weight he gained during his drug addiction before his comeback in 2009, something that became an obsessive quest for him (as he attempted to burn 2000 calories every day, eventually wearing himself out from the overexercising). While he used this in his art to portray his Relapse Slasher Movie character, he faced significant criticism for this from the media and fans, who said he looked sickly or too different. (He would later complain about this on the The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (Deluxe) album cut "Baby".) Upon his comeback in 2017, he appeared at a similar weight to what he'd been in his late 20s, and was praised for looking more like his original self, but it also came with him developing a bit of a belly.
  • Bella Twins Brie Bella]] has gotten hateful comments hurled at her by fans claiming she looks like a stick insect and "needs to eat something". This is ignoring the possibility that she merely just looks much thinner because she is next to a lot of very curvy and muscular women on Total Divas. The twins have said in interviews that Brie is naturally slimmer proportioned than Nikki. Additionally Brie is a vegan so she's bound to be a little less curvy than her sister. Showing how Hate Dumb really is in effect, her sister Nikki has gotten the reverse of this and been referred to as "the fat twin".note  Total Divas does show the effects of this trope. Brie panics about an upcoming photoshoot and tries to get her sister to do a juice cleanse with her. As in drinking nothing but smoothies for 30 days. While a cleanse is often a good idea if one wants to detox after too much junk food, it's the sort of thing that should just be done for 2-3 days at most.
  • Anne Hathaway refused to say her methods for losing weight in Les Misérables (2012) - she lost twenty five pounds in a short space of time - as she didn't want fans trying to emulate them. The point for the weight loss was that Fantine was starving to death on the streets.

(9/50) A pothole/link used to mean "very skinny"

(8/50) :A single character is very thin, with no further context

(5/50) used to mean Hollywood Beauty Standards but specifically for body weight

(4/50) Character/person is critizised for being TOO thin

  • YMMV/Fark— Hollywood Homely: Whenever unflattering paparazzi pictures of an actress are posted on the Showbiz tab, you can generally see Farkers telling them to go on a diet (too fat), or that they should eat a sammich (too thin), or make horse puns (Sarah Jessica Parker)
  • Bridget Jones On that note, Perpetua considers Bridget to be Hollywood Thin, referring to her as having a "bony arse" which surprises Bridget.
  • YMMV/Chicago Hollywood Thin: Meanwhile, Roxie—played by the shapely Renée Zellweger—is told that no one wants to see her "scrawny legs" on a stage.
  • Series/Ringer Invoked, Bridget is repeatedly told that she is unhealthy because of how thin she is.

(5/50) the characters are NOT thin (!)

  • Video Game/Roommates Hollywood Thin: All three of the girls in the Latin House have extremely slim waists, moderately-curvy hips, and enormous breasts.
  • Double Homework Hollywood Thin: Averted. Not one of the girls is super thin. In fact, Rachel (whom MC dated before) has an athletic build, MC says flat-out that he finds the average-bodied Daniela attractive, and in Lauren’s epilogue, MC mentions her curves as his favorite thing about her body.
  • Mammoth City Messengers Hollywood Thin: Isabella has a significant hourglass figure, considering her age.
  • One episode of Raw had Randy Orton return from injury and Vince McMahon came out and said his clothes looked like they were hanging off him and his neck looked like a stack of quarters (implying he'd lost weight because he hadn't been able to train due to his injury). Except Randy looked exactly the same as he normally does (although he was put in a suit a size or two too big to help with the effect.)
  • Esmeralda of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the opposite case, where she has a very curvy body and is quite voluptuous for someone who lives on the streets and has to dance for change.
