Class Trial 11

Ibuki is found dead in the Amusement park, with her feet having been severed.

Tropes for the Eleventh Class Trial

  • Brother–Sister Incest: Komaru refers to her brother as having a nice butt a little too casually.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kazuichi is tormented by Hiyoko, yelled at by Sonia, harangued by Mahiru, insulted by Gundham, suspected by Makoto, and thrown in a bush halfway through the trial by popular vote—a bush that grows thorns and gives him rashes at Monokuma's command.
  • Downer Ending: While the blackened is correctly voted for, Hiyoko, Kiyotaka, and Monomi are also executed. The surviving students struggle to cope with these deaths.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Hiyoko torments Kazuichi by constantly mentioning the abuse the latter suffered; this is ultimately what gets her punished with the blackened.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Gundham slips up by asking what Ibuki used to cause the killer's injury, implying that Ibuki hadn't bitten the killer but instead used a weapon—a fact that only the killer would know.
  • Innocent Innuendo: After Kazuichi is trapped within a bush, Hifumi writes a letter requesting a description of Kazuichi's Bush. Mikan proceeds to elaborately describe Kazuichi's bush. Kazuichi panics before realizing that Mikan must be referring to the bush that he's trapped in. Subverted when Mikan reveals that there's a hole in his crotch and that she's been describing his actual pubic hair.
  • Last Request: Before she dies, Hiyoko requests that everyone leave Kazuichi trapped in the bush forever, and never talk to him again.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mondo, when Taka is executed after Mondo agreed to gamble his life in an attempt to save Hiyoko.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Neither Ibuki nor Gundham had any ill intentions toward each other. The killing happened because Ibuki found that Gundham was collecting knives, assumed that he was plotting a murder, and panicked when alone with him. Gundham proceeds to kill her in the struggle when he thinks that she was about to harm one of his Devas in the fight.
  • Shipper on Deck: Komaru makes several attempts to pair Makoto off with Kyoko and Toko off with Byakuya.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Sonia/Gundham is teased pretty heavily. As are Hiyoko/Chihiro and Hiyoko/Mondo. They all end poorly.
    • Although, Makoto/Kyoko and Mondo/Mahiru are also teased without any of the involved parties being killed.
  • The Dog Bites Back: When it's announced that Hiyoko will be punished with the Blackened, Mikan proceeds to start feverishly accusing a killer in her determination to see the Blackened revealed.
  • Took a Level in Badass: When Mikan learns that Hiyoko will be punished with the Blackened, she proceeds to drop her stutter and start fiercely accusing Gundham of the killing. She even performs a Climax Inference.

Class Trial 12

Aoi Asahina is found dead in her bathroom on the morning after hosting a disastrous Pool Party.

Tropes for the Twelfth Class Trial

  • Ascended Meme: In the Ninth Trial, several users who suspected him of the crime began declaring themselves #TeamHajime. This time, Hajime actually did do it.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • The Chlorine-filled pool that Hagakure is pushed into turns out to be where Hina was killed.
    • The anti-itching cream that Hagakure uses to recover from the rashes he got from a dip in Chlorine Water is used to indicate a killer when the class decides that the killer must've used the cream after getting Hina out of the pool. This implicates Hajime when Nagito points out that Hajime, who helped him get out, had to have used the cream.
  • Enemy Within: Izuru Kamakura is implied to have influenced Hajime into murdering Hina
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Hajime is pretty horrified by his crimes.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Nagito pieces together Hajime's guilt pretty early, but lets the trial continue on for quite some time regardless.
  • Rogue Protagonist: The Killer in this trial is none other than Hajime.
  • Sanity Slippage: Hajime's motive for the crime turns out to be this, with Izuru's murderous impulses driving him murderously insane.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Mondo/Mahiru continues to be teased. For once, it actually ends well.
    • Monokuma and Nagito begin to ship Celeste with Yasuhiro. Averted in that she does not take the suggestion well... At least they both survive.
    • Hajime and Nagito are also teased quite a bit. Ends Poorly.
  • Spotting the Thread: Hajime is ultimately brought down when Nagito points out that Hajime must've been the one who used the anti-itching cream.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Even though she died in the middle of trial 10, we see Aoi as the victim, yet again.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Hajime improvises a great deal of his scheme based on objects that just happened to be left lying around.

Class Trial 13

After a fog fills the school, the ashes of Kiyotaka Ishimaru are found in the kitchen oven.

Tropes for the Thirteenth Class Trial

  • Dead Man Writing: Ishimaru's suicide letter.
  • Driven to Suicide: In his letter, Ishimaru details his death and says that if a murder is bound to happen, he must limit the number of deaths as much as possible.
  • Never Suicide: Averted.
  • Ominous Fog: The motive.
  • Ship Tease: Hajime is teased with Celes, Chiaki, and Mahiru. In a twist, none of them died (except on the inside).
  • The Scapegoat: Despite not being a part of the trial outside of leaving letters, Kazuichi is killed by a majority vote following Monokuma's desire for an execution after the conclusion and offering the reserve course students as options.

Class Trial 14

Mikan is found dead after an outbreak of the Despair Disease has spread throughout the school.

Tropes for the Fourteenth Class Trial

Class Trial 15

Fan favourites from previous trials are reunited for a very special trial after the deaths of four victims: Sayaka Maizono, Nekomaru Nidai, Mikan Tsumiki, and Hajime Hinata.

Tropes for the Fifteenth Class Trial
  • Accidental Murder: Chiaki somehow commits three of these.
  • Big Blackout: Caused by Kazuichi for 15 minutes when some of the murders took place.
  • Born Unlucky: Chiaki managed to become the blackened for three murders without knowing it through three entirely unconnected accidents.
  • Butt-Monkey: Hagakure is put in a crate first thing in the trial by Mukuro. Kazuichi joins him in his bush from Trial 11.
  • Call-Back:
    • Several. Not only are several fan-favourite roleplayers reprising their roles, but there is a document found that details the results of past trials.
    • Kazuichi is also forced into a bush again.
  • Downer Ending: This trial marks the second loss and mass execution.
  • Gambit Pile Up: In addition to Junko and Mikan having come up with their own plots and Nagito performing his usual schemes, Celeste, Byakuya, Toko, Kazuichi, Hagakure, Teruteru, Fuyuhiko, and Peko were also plotting to commit murder on the night of the crime.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Junko herself falls victim to this: she incorrectly guesses what song Ibuki sang, revealing that she was not in fact watching the gymnasium for an hour.
  • Left Hanging: The Host never got around to posting the execution.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Mikan and Nekomaru are both killed during a black-out caused by Kazuichi.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Nagito interrupted two of the murder plans that happened the same night and tampered with Nekomaru and Mikan's crime scene.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Through the simple acts of handing out some candy to a friend, forgetting a handheld game console, and turning on an incinerator, Chiaki becomes the blackened for three different murders without even noticing.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Chiaki only realizes that she is indeed the blackened when the vote is declared to be wrong and the rest of her friends are sentenced to execution.
  • Papa Bear: Chihiro shows this side to himself when Makoto accuses Chiaki of being Nekomaru's accidental killer and when Nagito later insists that Chiaki should be considered responsible for her accidental killings and for the mass execution of her classmates.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Chihiro is left cussing and hurling insults at Hagakure when the latter starts constantly throwing baseless accusations at him for being the mastermind and for being Junko's father. He later directs the same anger at Nagito when he starts insisting that Chiaki should be held accountable for her accidental murders and the upcoming mass execution.
  • Special Guest: Junko Enoshima visits the trial at one point. She turns out to be the murderer of Mikan.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Sayaka, Nekomaru, and Mikan are victims yet again.
  • True Companions: Even at the bitter end, Leon and Ibuki swear to fight the awaiting void together.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Chiaki kills Hajime, Sayaka, and Nekomaru without even realizing it.

Class Trial 16

The Despair Disease has struck the island. In the midst of a dinner party to get their minds off the virus, a blackout occurs and Mikan's body appears in the midst of the abandoned lodge's dining hall

Tropes for the Sixteenth Class Trial

  • Accidental Murder: Averted. Akane admits to having bludgeoned Mikan. It turns out in the end that she was already dead.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Sonia gets away with her crime.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Sonia spends most of the trial contributing nothing while "innocently" bullying Kazuichi and becoming closer to Nagito. She turns out to be the killer.
  • Bluffing the Murderer: Togami tricks Hiyoko into admitting that she visited Mikan by claiming that Mikan named her in a note. Subverted in that she turns out to be an accomplice.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kazuichi ends up with a shock collar around his neck.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Completely missed by the cast, as the steak that Twogami had Sonia cook ends up being the murder weapon.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Togami swears revenge against Kazuichi for falsely claiming that a Despair Disease infected Togami hit on him. Togami proceeds to have a shock collar fit on him by Sonia and use it to electrocute him repeatedly.
  • Downer Ending: A Mass-Execution.
  • Exact Words: Nagito pulls this on Hiyoko when he claims he never said Mikan didn't give herself the disease, just that it wouldn't make sense to think so.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Between Nagito and Sonia, relating to their sleepover.
  • Karma Houdini: Sonia
  • Left Hanging: Nobody ever explains why Toko passed out.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Subverted. Mikan's body appears in the middle of a party during a blackout, but she is quickly proven to have died earlier.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Hiyoko ends up having the Despair Disease and acts as an accomplice.
  • Ship Tease: Nagito and Sonia of all people. Ends poorly.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Mikan is a victim for the 3rd time in a row.

Class Trial 17

Yasuhiro Hagakure is found dead in the Hope's Peak Academy infirmary. This trial featured several sequels and now has its own page at Class Trials CT 17

Class Trial 18

Mondo Owada and Kiyotaka Ishimaru are found dead in the Funhouse on Jabberwock Island.

Tropes for the Eighteenth Class Trial

  • Blatant Lies: Nagito mentions that the Duralumin Rods may have come from a new shop that opened in the Strawberry House. Sonia believes it.
  • Darkhorse Victory: Kazuichi ends up winning the non-canon game of Russian Roulette.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • Makoto was meant to play a big role, but when his handler went inactive early into the trial, Nagito ended up being retconned as the one who investigated the Final Dead Room.
    • Sakura was also meant to receive more evidence than she did in the trial, but her evidence was given to other players.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Hagakure somehow confuses Sakura for her statue in Strawberry House.
  • Guilt by Association: Taka is murdered simply for being friends with Mondo.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Kyoko murders Mondo after finding a document in the final dead room that claims that his biker gang murdered a member of her family. She also kills Taka for daring to be his friend.
  • Rube Goldberg Machine: Kyoko constructs one in order to kill Taka from afar.
  • Sixth Ranger: With very little explanation, Hina is suddenly thrown into the Killing Game to replace an inactive Makoto.

Class Trial 19

On the day of Yasuhiro Hagakure's birthday party, the attendees end up being drugged. When they awaken, Akane Owari and Aoi Asahina are found dead.

Tropes for the Nineteenth Class Trial

  • Adaptational Intelligence: Yasuhiro is surprisingly on the ball in this trial.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Hagakure's birthday is interrupted by a sudden double murder.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Yasuhiro decides to comfort a distraught Taka by repeating his mother's motivational words. This ends up horrifying Taka further as he recalls being abandoned by his mother.
  • False Confession: Fuyuhiko confesses to the murder shortly after Komaru does, forcing the class to determine which one is telling the truth.
  • Frame-Up: Evidence was planted on Nagito, Chihiro, Hagakure, and Mondo while they were unconscious.
  • Head Swap: Aoi and Akane's heads are cut off and swapped post-mortem.
  • Rogue Protagonist: Komaru turns out to be the killer.
  • Senseless Sacrifice:
    • Sonia attacks Monokuma, outraged that Komaru is going to have to be executed, leading to her being sentenced to execution as well.
    • When Sonia is executed, Gundham attempts to die with her and Kazuichi attempts to do the same. All while Taka denounces the very concept.
    • Fuyuhiko also attempts to do this by confessing to the murder to protect Komaru.
  • Take Up My Sword: Before going off to be executed with Sonia, Gundham tasks Taka with taking care of his Four Dark Devas.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The others are quick to denounce Fuyuhiko for being willing to get everybody killed with his false confession.

Class Trial 20

Within a day of Nagito obtaining a Universal Key in a raffle, the class is drugged over breakfast, Monomi is abducted, and Celestia Ludenberg and Hifumi Yamada are found dead.

Tropes for the Twentieth Class Trial

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Hifumi ends up conducting an elaborate Murder/Suicide plot with the intent of causing a Mass-Execution
  • Butt-Monkey: After he refuses to give up critical testimony, Kazuichi finds himself threatened by practically everybody.
  • Complexity Addiction: Hifumi goes to great lengths to get the class killed.
  • Convenient Replacement Character: With yet another mid-trial murder, somebody is brought in as a replacement. Unfortunately, that someone is Hagakure.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Twogami is given a major role, only to succumb to a slow-acting poison midtrial.
  • Distressed Damsel: Monomi is abducted overnight and thrown in a toolshed.
  • Driven to Suicide: Hifumi.
  • Frame-Up: Hifumi attempts to frame Nagito, Hiyoko, and Mikan at various points.
  • Hope Spot: It initially looks like Twogami might survive his poisoning. However, he's found dead in the infirmary during a second intermission.
  • Murder-Suicide: Hifumi turns out to have poisoned himself and the victims for the sake of one.
  • Not Me This Time: Nagito turns out to be completely innocent and uninvolved in the case.
  • Power Incontinence: Toko catches a cold that causes her to constantly switch between personalities. As a result, she spends the day unaware of the eHandbook theft or even the murders. She even has to be told about Twogami's collapse.
  • The Power of Hate: Monokuma reveals this to have been the killer's motive, suggesting that they hated everybody so much that they would do anything to get to them.
  • Production Foreshadowing:
    • Hagakure predicted Hifumi's death back in Trial 14.
    • He also ends up predicting a murder where a "Terrifying Ogre is surrounded by Grapes and shoved down a set of stairs". Monokuma implies that this might be another case of Hagakure predicting a murder.
  • Running Gag: Hiyoko keeps guessing "G for Gummy" during the trial's Hangman's Gambits, only for her guess to be wrong. And, when there finally is a "G" in the phrase, Nagito guesses it instead. "G for Gummy" even ends up being an option in the Vote for the Blackened
  • Sadistic Choice: Subverted. Monokuma provides the option to have either Monomi or Hagakure executed in the wake of the reveal that the Blackened committed suicide. As it turns out though, he'd already made up his mind regardless of the results.
  • Ship Tease: Twogami/Ibuki. Ends Poorly. Again.
  • Sixth Ranger: Hagakure is added to the cast after Twogami collapses from the poisoning.
  • Taking You with Me: Hifumi attempts to create a murder-suicide elaborate enough to make the others get the trial wrong, seeking a mass-execution
  • The Scapegoat: Without anybody to execute, Monokuma chooses to have Monomi executed.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right:
    • Kazuichi surprisingly picks up on quite a bit of the case early on, but is mostly ignored.
    • Akane is also able to deduce that Hifumi was the culprit behind it all.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Monokuma admits that Hifumi, whose ultimate goal had been to orchestrate a mass execution to kill everybody, probably could've just poisoned everybody with the milk instead of drugging them
