Fanfic / A Hero's Wrath

Go To

He squatted down to Izuku who was a bit scared that his dad was going to scold him or be disappointed but Asura merely ruffled his hair before speaking. "Izuku. What have I told you about bad people?"

Izuku thought about it for a bit. "They hurt others for no good reason.” Izuku answered confidently. "Yeah. So. What reason did Kacchan have for hurting you?" Izuku thought about it and obviously didn't have an answer.

He wanted to say that Kacchan only wanted to fight him not hurt him, but Kacchan hadn’t stopped when Izuku told him to. He sat there in silence for a while before looking slightly despairing, tears welling in the little boys eyes. “I don’t know.”

A Hero's Wrath is a My Hero Academia/Asura's Wrath Fusion Fic by Natalman with quite a few other crossover elements sprinkled in and can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

A character page is under construction but needs contributions.

A Hero's Wrath contains the following tropes

  • The Ace:
    • While Asura is registered as the No. 4 Hero in Japan, it is strongly implied that he is so powerful that All Might would not be able to beat him in a straight fight, his number being a result of his abrasive personality and disdain towards media coverage.
    • Having trained to use his Wrath mantra by his father since he could start walking as well as possessing an affinity for primordial Fear mantra, Izuku is an unstoppable juggernaut that dwarfs all of his fellow contestants in terms of points by the time he takes the UA entrance exam.
  • Adaptational Badass: Pretty much everyone who has a Quirk are a LOT more powerful than canon due to the influence of Mantra and the general insanity that is Asura's Wrath.
  • Adaptation Expansion: In-canon, Gohma Vlitra was merely a creation of Chakravartin's meant only to be a mindless beast used to test the Demigods. Here, is it implied that Gohma Vlitra — or at least its soul — had existed long before it was Gohma Vlitra, reincarnating in many different forms (most often gods of death and destruction according to it's words) and different levels of intelligence, Izuku merely being its latest incarnation. Since Chakravartin embodied samsara, it is never stated if Chakravartin guided its many different lives or if this was beyond even his machinations.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Himiko Toga is an adopted member of the Midoriya family rather than a villain here thanks to Mithra and Ryuko, meaning that she is a lot less Ax-Crazy and much more well-adjusted than in canon. Overlaps with Adaptational Heroism.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Stain is confirmed to be a minion of Aku in chapter 16
  • All in the Manual: Many details are expanded on in the notes for each chapter, usually relating to things and concepts introduced in that chapter.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: On top of being a pro-hero and a mantra user, Deus owns a MegaCorp that handles a wide variety of enterprises, has become the Vice Principal to the nation's top Superhero School, and has enough money to burn on a spaceship to be used in the Entrance Exam.
  • Berserk Button:
    • While it isn't hard to piss Asura off, he won't actually try to hurt you unless you do something especially despicable. Usually this translates to familial abuse, having hunted down and nearly crippled Endeavor when he found out what he did to his wife and eldest son.
    • While short-tempered, do not mock any of the Midorya family around Izuku. He threatened to cripple the last guy who claimed his sister was guilty of something.
  • Blood Knight: It is revealed that Nejire possesses a Natural affinity to Lust mantra — specifically possessing a lust for battle — which not only makes her more powerful when a real fight is happening, but is makes her much more of a sadist to her opponents.
  • Broken Ace: People with a strong Wrath Mantra affinity are shown to be this. While they do gain great physical benefits from their inherited power, Asura and Izuku show difficulties relating to people in general, with Asura taking great strides to ensure his children never become like him.
  • Cool Starship: The Nirvana is a spacecraft constructed by Deus based on a Demigod ship back during the events of Asura's Wrath.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The UA students, along with Augus and Yasha, inflict this upon the villains invading UA University.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Augus gives the students one when the League of Villains invade UA
Augus: Alright, boys and girls. Today you will be exposed to what the hero business likes to call a massive cover up. While the ladies and gentlemen of your school faculty would like you to believe that they planned for this, they were actually hoping that the group currently setting this forest on fire would not find this place before they were dealt with. However, I did not spend two months beating every last one of you into shape for you to lay dead on the ground while these people pretend they own the world. So you have a choice; you can either listen to what your teachers are going to say and evacuate, or you can show these weaklings who really should be scared.
  • Demonic Possession: Kage, the spirit of the Satsui no Hado, briefly possesses Bakugo during the Sports Festival until Izuku decides to Beat the Curse Out of Him
  • The Dreaded: While Asura is perfectly fine with fighting, his reputation as an Unstoppable Rage monster is so infamous that some criminals would rather turn themselves in than face his wrath. There was even an incident where his wife was kidnapped, only for the kidnappers to turn themselves in, give up crime, and spend the rest of their lives doing volunteer work when they found out whose wife they had kidnapped.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Much like his canon counterpart, Augus is just as much of a Blood Knight to his students. It is strongly implied that his cocky attitude towards his students is why he was the perfect teacher for Asura; his Training from Hell by design exhausts one's patience, thus it is perfect for training those with Wrath Mantra.
  • Everyone Has Standards: For all his flaws, even Enji dislikes Wyzen for being a rude, loudmouthed Jerkass, mentally noting that he looks like a saint compared to him.
  • Fell Asleep Standing Up: Izuku and Bakugo end up passing out on their feet when they witness the insanity that is Momo and Nejire's fight during the Sports Festival
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It is implied that Endeavor is still the No. 2 hero despite his toxic personality and various scandals just because the Hero Commission has a vested interest in keeping him. Otherwise, no one could stand him. Deus even compares him to Asura and makes a point that Asura was at least an honorable man who actually cared about other people, Asura himself having hunted Endeavor down and beat the hell out of him when he found out about Shoto and his wife.
  • Fusion Fic: According to the fanfic's timeline, this is set thousands of years after the events of Asura's Wrath (presumably during or after the game's epilogue), the Eight Guardian Generals having reincarnated into their descendants, mantra returning, and their families rediscovering their mantra affinities somewhere during the emergence of Quirks in humanity.
    • Inko Midorya is Asura's wife, with "Durga" a nickname serving as a reminder of Asura's old life.
  • G-Rated Sex: Izuku and Nejire have not gone "all the way" in their relationship, but they do tend to cuddle a lot, to the point where they "cuddle a dent in the wall."
  • Gender Flip: Kurogiri here is instead Miss Kuro.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Much like with his father, Izuku's affinity to Wrath mantra has given him a rather short fuse. While this originally manifested as an explosive temper that turned into an Unstoppable Rage if he didn't find ways to burn off the excess mantra, when he becomes Vajira Vlitra Izuku, it has since evolved into a Tranquil Fury, having learned to properly harness and focus his rage without it consuming him.
  • Hypocrite: Bakugo still thinks that Izuku can't be a hero because he has no quirk and relies on mantra, ignoring the fact that his family is historically tied to the Mantra of Violence, his own uncle being Wyzen.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Both of them being Blood Knights, Izuku cannot help but be turned on when Nejire's Lust Mantra causes her to play with her opponents Mirio Togata and Tamaki Amajiki like a cat with mice during the opening battle at Izuku's orientation.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Izuku is still technically quirkless despite having Mantra.
    • Despite the fact that Izuku was born with powers in this continuity, Bakugo still thinks that Izuku not having a quirk makes him a useless deku who couldn't be a hero.
  • Irrational Hatred: Izuku develops a version of this towards Mirio after the latter accepts the offer to take OFA to the point where his inner narration even admits that he understands why Mirio made his decision but still can not forgive him. It is implied that this is because his Mantra won't let him forgive a betrayal, no matter how understandable the reason.
  • Jerkass: Wyzen is living incarnation of this trope, which explains why Bakugo's so abrasive
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The bat-wielding villain decides to cut his losses and get away from UA when he sees how badly the League of Villains are faring against the UA students and the adults
  • Monkey King Lite: Much like the canon-version of his father, Izuku has shades of this, his mantra-powers including the manifestation of a monkey-tail.
  • Not Quite Dead: While the fic is set long after the events of Asura's Wrath, the mantra's remanifestation on Earth, the wielding of such recreating the demigod race through humanity and Izuku's dream of encountering the Golden Spider implies that either Chakravartin never died or was killed and brought back to life by some means. Whether or not any of this has anything to do with the manifestation of quirks is still a mystery though.
  • Oblivious to Love: Having inherited Asura's lack of social skills when it comes to love, both Izuku and Mithra are terrible at picking up signals. For Izuku, Nejire had to be the one to ask him on a date. In Mithra's case, Inko had to physically shove Ryuko onto her for her to finally get the hint.
  • Opposites Attract: There is a sense of irony in the idea that Izuku Midorya — who has a hereditary affinity to Wrath Mantra —eventually starts dating Nejire Hado, a girl who is later revealed to be attuned to Lust Mantra.
  • Only Sane Man: The as-of-yet unnamed bat-wielding Villain is this for the League of Villains given that he's smart enough Know When to Fold 'Em, especially after the villains are subject to an almost hilarious Curb-Stomp Battle by the students, Augus, and Yasha. The same applies for Miss Kuro.
  • Oxymoronic Being: When it is revealed that Izuku is the reincarnation of Gohma Vlitra and possesses the Gohma's Primordial Mantra, yet still possesses his father's Wrath Mantra, makes him equal parts Gohma and Demigod, something that confounds Kalrow beyond reason.
  • The Power of Hate: Those attuned to Wrath Mantra (Asura, Izuku and Momo) are made more powerful when feeling anger or rage. This often involves a fiery aura, an increase in strength, speed and stamina and various Super Modes. Izuku flatly tells Momo that it is also directly tied to one's capacity to learn and overcome problems, pointing out that they improve exponentially when frustrated.
  • The Power of Lust: Those attuned to Lust Mantra (Midnight and Nejire) are made more powerful when being overcome with feelings of Lust. This can range as a lust for sex, power or battle. When active, Lust Mantra can have a psychological effect on those around them, arousing intrusive thoughts of sexual lust in their surroundings as the excess mantra slowly wears off, and can even inflict powerful, unwanted infatuation in others.
  • Reincarnation: It is mentioned that the current wielders of mantra are all reincarnations of previous wielders, the Eight Guardian Generals from the Age of Demigods having reincarnated into their descendants and Gohma Vlitra having reincarnated into Asura's son Izuku.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Zig-Zagged. In-canon, Asura and Augus only vaguely resemble each other, only related as master/apprentice-turned-enemies. Here, Augus is Asura's actual father, making Izuku directly related to three mantra-wielding heroes (Asura his father, Yasha his uncle and Augus his grandfather). However, it is expressly stated that the various Asura's Wrath characters are reincarnated from their canon-counterparts much like in the game's epilogue, where there is no hint that Asura and Augus's reincarnated forms even know each other, much less are related by blood.
  • Take a Third Option: While suffering through his transformation into his Vajra Vlitra Form, Izuku is given a series of choices by the Golden Spider; the Gohma Path (where he becomes the new Gohma Vlitra and leads the Gohma to destroy humanity), the Demigod Path (repeat the mistakes of his Demigod ancestors) or the Golden Spider's Path (do whatever the Spider tells him). Izuku answers by waking himself up, deciding he wasn't going to play his game.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Izuku has not worn a shirt since he was six-years old. He claims that he will only ever wear one at his sister's wedding and not a second more. When Deus scolds him for breaking dress code, Izuku makes it clear that he is wearing the shirts and tie in the order that is required of him as school rules say, even if he only wears them tied around his waist.
  • Wrong Context Magic:
    • Despite their similarities, distinctions are made between quirks and mantra affinity. With over 80% of people on the planet possess quirks, mantra affinity can be traced through bloodlines and are found around 12 known families. While incredibly rare, those who possess both a quirk and access to mantra do indeed exist, Momo having "Creation" and Wrath Mantra and Nejire wielding "Wave Motion" and Lust Mantra.
    • While the Eight Mantras (Wrath, Pride, Sloth, Lust, Violence, Melancholy, Greed and Vanity) were all wielded by the Demigods and now their human descendants, Kalrow explains that the Gohma were creatures made manifest by a Ninth "Primordial" Mantra wielded only by Vlitra, described by Izuku as being similar to Wrath Mantra, but being more intense, corrosive and corrupting. Since no one other than Vlitra has wielded it, imagine everyone's surprise when Izuku manifests it.
      • It is revealed in Chapter 14 that the Primordial Mantra is the mantra of Fear, and that the other eight forms of mantra are mere derivatives of this primordial emotion, the source of Izuku's rage based on the fear that he feels towards himself and others.
    • On top of wielding Wrath Mantra, Momo also possesses what's called "Divine Mantra".
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Being Gohma Vlitra's human-incarnation, Izuku possesses the Primordial Mantra unique only to Vlitra, yet he also possesses his father's affinity to Wrath Mantra. Kalrow explains that it is like oil and water trying and failing to mix, only for... something... to come along and magically mix them together.
