    Arcturus' Inquisitorial Retinue

Inquisitor Arcturus (Ordo Malleus)

The central protagonist, all things considered, of the thread, Arcturus is an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and potent psyker who was heavily involved in the Gensokyoan Crusade. 150 years on, he's still alive and going about his business aboard the Lysander. The other characters on-board are all members of his retinue.

Over the course of the war, he achieved many things: being instrumental in winning the Gensokyoans' trust, defeating his long-time enemy, the Nurglite Inquisitor Isaac Bickerstaff, reuniting with his wife, and gaining a substantial amount of status within the Inquisition. As a result, he is among the Imperial officials most trusted by the Gensokyoans.

  • Artificial Limbs: Lost his hand during the Battle Of The Snow-Covered Forest against the necrons, and has a cybernetic replacement. This, in turn, gets mangled later on, and gets replaced with a vastly superior Kappa prosthetic which among other things doubles as a firearm.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a laid-back, flippant and sarcastically humorous reaction to most things thrown his way, which is very unusual in an Inquisitor, although he can and will take things seriously when necessary.
  • The Hero: Sure turned out that way, once he got his past and emotional state sorted out.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's fair and understanding to most of the people he meets, which is more than can be said for most Imperials.

St. Zee (Zelenin)

Arcturus' wife, Zelenin's past is a long and murky one. She was Arcturus' wife, companion, and fellow Inquisitor for many years prior to the events of The Imperium Of Man Comes To Gensokyo, but this was cut abruptly short when Isaac Bickerstaff betrayed them and kidnapped her, imprisoning her and conducting vile and disturbing experiments on her using his Nurglite plagues. Unable to escape, she cried out for help. Help came in the form of the Slaaneshi daemon Laernariel, who semi-possessed her helped her escape in exchange for servitude. She was released from Laernariel's service when Remilia Scarlet killed her in battle in the original game. She was transformed into a bizarre combination of vampire and Living Saint, and was reunited with her husband.

150 years later, she has not aged thanks to her vampiric powers. She serves as Arcturus' right-hand woman, and as Remilia's maid, being unable to return to being an Inquisitor (since she is physically incapable of disobeying Remilia's orders). She has begun to be plagued by disturbing visions, haunted by a pair of Slaaneshi daemons who only she can see.

  • Dark and Troubled Past: Being betrayed by your best friend, tortured non-stop for years, and then getting possessed and forced to commit atrocities certainly counts as one.
  • Meido: Wears a maid uniform when not on assignment, in keeping with her position as a Maid of the Scarlet Mansion.
  • Our Angels Are Different: As a Living Saint, Zee has immense psionic power at her disposal and cannot be corrupted by the forces of Chaos; furthermore, she has the power to exorcize daemons, though not without difficulty.

Guardsman Drake Lycetta

The son of the governor of a paradise planet, Drake joined the guard to prove himself. After he passed the training through hard work (rather than any status or connections) Corollianus noticed his skill with a hotshot rifle and his remarkable proficiency at driving various vehicles. Arcturus offered to take him up as an acolyte. He flies the Lysander when it is not in the warp.

Drake is extremely insecure. He also has a deep-seated fear and suspicion of Gensokyoans.

  • Butt-Monkey: He has a deep fear of youkai. Unfortunately, he's often forced to work with them.

Trogg

An Ogryn bodyguard attached to the Lysander's crew. Like most Ogryn, he lacks any real intelligence, and has a childlike personality. He is extremely adept and powerful in close combat, but his simple mind often makes him a liability.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: He often does not suffer from wounds until he eventually notices that they're there.
  • Blood Knight: To an extent. He loves punching people, but only likes fighting when it's fair or the opponent does nothing that offends him (such as hurt his team-mates). His favorite enemies are orks, while his least favorite are Khorne Berserkers.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: The silly moronic big guy also happens to be nearly invincible in combat, and has (supposedly) beaten fully-armored xenos to death, often with his bare fists.
  • Hulk Speak / Third-Person Person / You No Take Candle: Did we mention he's an Ogryn?
  • The Nicknamer: He refers to nearly everyone by a simpler or more childish version of their names. When he doesn't know thier names, though he goes with a description. Amongst the ones used have been "pretty wingy lady", "Pretty bunny lady", and "Angry Snake Man".
    • The Chaos Space Marines are referred to as baduglies.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Often stands directly behind someone when starting a conversation with them.
  • Worthy Opponent: Averted. While a Chaos Space Marine appeared to admire Trogg's strength, he just kept bashing the Marine's helmet in.

Shard

A fairy born from an underground cave, Shard was encountered on the desert world of Proserpina, working with the other fairies to combat the chaos cult there. However, she is not the same as the other fairies: she was corrupted physically by chaos cultists before she was fully formed and, as such, is not fully connected to the Song or her brethren. She stowed away on the Lysander after the cult was dealt with, and after narrowly avoiding being immediately executed by Arcturus, was successfully exorcized of the chaos influence.

Leona

A tsukumogami (a youkai formed from an inanimate object), Leona was created from an old Leman Russ in a Guard storage depot on Gensokyo. Drake mistook her for an ordinary tank and was forcibly expelled by her humanoid form when he tried to drive her. This resulted in a standoff and her surrender. Once the matter was resolved, she jumped at the opportunity to join the retinue (having remembered Arcturus from her time in the War). Thanks to Kappa technology she can leave the tank while wearing a specialised suit in order to aid the team in other areas. Like all tsukumogami, she cannot be parted from her true self (that is, the tank) for long. If her humanoid form is killed it simply appears again inside the tank.

  • Awesome, but Impractical: Prior to her visit to the Kappa, she suffered from this, since many situations simply didn't allow for tanks.
  • More Dakka: Being the personification of a tank, she can use heavy bolters and autocannons.
  • Power Armour: The whole reason she can leave the tank in humanoid form is that her armour is made of detachable tank armour.
  • Walking Armory: Wields (when in humanoid form) an autocannon (which is a tank armament for those who are wondering), a missile launcher, and a standard boltgun as a sidearm. It's possible she could carry and wield more if necessary.

    Darius Bickerstaff's Inquisitorial Retinue

Lord Inquisitor Darius Bickerstaff (Ordo Hereticus)

Darius is a renowned veteran and Inquisitorial representative of a staunchly puritanical bent, who believes firmly that Arcturus is treacherous or insane and that Gensokyoans are very bad news. His estranged son, the infamous Isaac Bickerstaff, was once friends with Arcturus, but went insane and turned to Nurgle. Isaac was eventually killed by Arcturus in a duel during the Gensokyoan war. However, Darius had been kept in the dark about his son's actions, and arrived on Gensokyo with vengeance in mind. However, he was forced to leave the system by a series of events, and has harboured a grudge ever since.

After the Gensokyoan War, Bickerstaff continued to serve as an Inquisitor, and has long plotted even the score between himself and Arcturus.

  • Freudian Excuse: Inverted. His hatred of Gensokyoans and Arcturus stems from the actions of his son. He's up to his neck in denial, and believes his son never defected to Nurgle.

Silon

A Blank Assassin in the employ of Darius Bickerstaff, and unusually the only person Darius seems to feel compassion towards. Silon is ruthless, dangerous, and unwaveringly loyal to the Lord Inquisitor. His presence negates psyker abilities and severely impedes the mental processes of other. He accompanied Darius to Gensokyo, and was responsible for blinding Arcturus during a botched assassination attempt.

  • Cold Sniper: Favours a sniper rifle for quiet assassinations, although he is proficient in most weapons.
  • The Dreaded: The normal guards on the Ius Caecus have a tendency to act with fear or revulsion whenever asked to pull him out of stasis.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Silon is nowhere near the power of most of the other characters, but is still remarkably dangerous in a fight.

Inquisitor Foiridon Branquignol

Another Inquisitor involved in the Gensokyoan War, Branquignol was initially brought in to investigate charges of heresy against Inquisitor Arcturus. However, he failed to pursue his investigation, although he was vital to helping Darius escape the planet undetected. Brash, loud, and woefully unable to appreciate his own inadequacies, Branquignol is considered by most to be a pompous fool who should never have been given his level of authority. Nonetheless, Darius lets him tag along, since he considers him to be, at the very least, useful. Being an Inquisitor himself, Branquignol is accompanied at all times by a squad of Ogryn bodyguards.

  • More Dakka: Has as his retinue a team of Ogryn with heavy weapons.

Brother Terminator Avant Morrowheim

A veteran member of the Argent Crusaders Chapter of space marines, Morrowheim is 'on loan' to Darius' retinue, due to the Crusader's close ties to the Inquisition. Avant is extremely formidable in combat, his Tactical Dreadnought Armour allowing him to shrug off even the most devastating of attacks. Avant sees it as his sacred duty to uphold the honour of his chapter, and so is devoted to serving the Inquisitor to the full extent of his abilities.

  • Power Armour: Even when compared to the armour of other space marines, Morrowheim's Tactical Dreadnought (or Terminator) Armour is incredibly resilient.
  • Teleport Spam: Morrowheim's armour contains an inbuilt customized teleporter array, allowing him to teleport even within combat.

MADAN

A fusion of man and machine, the entity known as Mag-Alpha-Delta-Alpha-Nox, or MADAN, is a chrono-gladiator: a synthetically-enhanced warrior built to fight for the entertainment of crowds. MADAN, like all chrono-gladiators, was built with a kill switch in order to ensure the spectator's safety. When Darius encountered him on a mission, he saved Darius' life, and in turn the Lord Inquisitor deactivated his kill switch and hired him as a member of his retinue.

  • The Stoic: MADAN is a cyborg, and his robotic demeanor could initially be mistaken for that of a servitor, but he is in fact sentient. Even so, the cybernetics and drug-distribution systems hard-wired into him are a contributing factor to the suppression of emotion and learning initiative, also serving as a Restraining Bolt. Due to this, he may or may not be Not So Stoic.
  • Super-Reflexes: MADAN's most important skill as a fighter is his insanely fast reflexes.

Anya

Anya Carcima is a devout member of an obscure Imperial sect whom Darius investigated. Darius found the cult free of taint, and in return they were happy to gift to him one of their most precious relics: the Mantle Of the Virtuous, a specialised suit of Seraphim armour. Anya, as the only person who was able to easily use the armour, accompanied Darius in his personal crusade to root out heretics across the Ultima Segmentum. The Mantle itself appears to be possessed by the spirit of a long-dead Saint, who aids Anya in battle.

  • Split Personality: Changes personality in and out of combat, since she becomes possessed by a dead Saint whenever violence appears imminent.

Guardman Elmer

Another member of Darius' regiment, and another with a vendetta against Arcturus' retinue. Elmer was only a child when his family were butchered by chaos-tainted beastmen. Taken in by a ratling regiment, the boy Elmer learnt to fight and hunt alongside the most famed snipers of the Imperial army. In the present, Elmer is a quiet, restrained and thoroughly creepy expert scout and sniper, honing his skills against beastmen of all types. He has now joined Darius' retinue, and hopes to train his crosshairs on the rabbit girls due to his deep-seated hatred of beastmen. Inspired by this picture.

  • Cold Sniper: Perhaps even colder than Silon, and that is saying a lot.
  • Creepy Monotone: How he speaks.
  • Darker and Edgier: The guy's an expy of Elmer Fudd, for crying out loud! He shouldn't be this unsettling to watch!
  • Laser Sights: Normally doesn't use them, but people who anger him are left so shaken by the experience that they start hallucination being followed by the red dots of his sights.
  • Red Baron: Is known as 'The Hunter', 'Beastman's Bane' and 'The Scalper', among others.
  • Villainous BSoD: Seeing the rabbit girls in Arcturus' retinue triggers a flashback to Chaos-tainted beastmen ravaging his village.

    The inhabitants of Gensokyo

Sneel: The Self Digging Hole

  • Worth It: He is briefly shown having pulled a massive prank that caused him to severely punished in the form of an angry mob followed by repeated Keine-headbutts. This does not make him regret it.

    Unaligned or helpful individuals

Patchouli Knowledge

The librarian of Scarlet Devil Mansion, contacted for help against the youkai invasion.
