The Union

An independent military fleet of ships and personnel that was co-founded by both Autoluna and the Frontier as part of the war effort against the Puppets. Many Artery Gears registered with the Union hail from a large variety of factions not limited to its founders.

    The Union in General
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: At first, the Union was a joint collaboration by the Frontier sending their people to Autoluna for conversion into AGs, representing an alliance between two great factions, despite their actual relationship being far from friendly. But as the story goes on with more factions and AGs aligning themselves with the Union, the crew has become one messy group of friends and family.
  • War Hero: The Commander, Nio, Rela, and Mel are mentioned to be heroes who won humanity the First Puppet War, their story revealed in Chapter 11. In truth, their actions barely made a dent in the Puppet threat seeing as Marshal Bunard has been manipulating the team for his plans all along.
  • We Help the Helpless: Say there's a bunch of people in need of help. Think of that happening in every story episode, and the Union being posed the question of whether to save them or not. No matter their different opinions and the risk, everyone chooses to save them. This proves to be their saving bell in Episode 13 when the people they rescued and befriended speak against the slander Lisa spread around the world.

    The Commander
The overall Commander of the Union and player character, and a significant participant in the First Puppet War. Their compassion and trustworthy leadership combined has led to them being popular amongst many, if not key to the battle against the Puppets.
  • The Ace: The Commander is so skilled in battle planning that they earn the respect of the Union and Frontier fleets immediately during the prologue, despite how nothing else is known about them besides combat ability; this trait of theirs gets showcased in nearly every episode afterwards that Atlas comes to rate them highly for their unconventional tactics. Their past is explored in later main story episodes: they used to be a recruit in the Frontier Association army, quickly rising to become a trusted agent of General Wade Bunard and partner to Clarice Bunard, and later the commanding officer to the first AG trio. They were also trained by martial artist Master Lin in his home country, once remarked on that they could have been her successor.
  • Chick Magnet: They manage to attract plenty of Artery Gears, though the ones who explicitly have romantic feelings or at least have an intimate relationship with them are Nio, Rela, Mel, Alma, QingYan Cheng, and Clarice.
  • Mysterious Past: The Commander has no known data on their identity, and they refuse to reveal anything about themselves. Episode 11 to 13 dive into this as well as their exploits alongside Nio, Rela, and Mel during the First Puppet War.
  • Never Tell Me the Odds!: Although Atlas usually calculates a low probability of success for the Commander's plans, this is not much of a deterrent to trying anyway.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: The avatar that you select to represent you in-game has no effect on the plot or interactions with the girls.
  • The Strategist: Though they can't fight on the front lines, they more than make up for it with their tactical mind and ingenious, if daring plans. It's to the point that Atlas, the Strategist for the Frontier, rates the Commander as a major factor for success in battles.

    Capella
A recent arrival who has joined the Union as the Commander's deputy officer. Though she does not have much experience in war, she makes up for it with dedication and friendliness.

Codename: Lark
Callsign: AG-01
Faction: Autoluna Airborne Regiment
VA: Ayaka Ohashi
Rarity: 3★
Class: Balanced
Type: Thunder

One of the first three prototype Artery Gears deployed in history. Steadfast on the battlefield, calm with her jet rifle, but caring as a leader, she is devoted to the cause of ridding the world of Puppets, if only for her friends and her beloved Commander.
  • Gamer Chick: For someone who's acts as a professional soldier and leader, she has a love for video games. In Run, Pavonis!, it's actually part of the terms Pavonis offered to have her replace the Commander.
  • The Leader: Acts as one overall for the prototype AG trio, and including 04 when she joins them.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Has the distinction of being the very first AG the player would see in the prologue, where she's in an animated scene of her dropping onto a warzone. Inside the dropship, her skintight suit shows off her prominent bust bouncing around from turbulence, setting up the kind of fanservice one should expect from this point on.

Faction: Autoluna Airborne Division
VA: Megumi Han
Rarity: 4★
Class: Assault
Type: Molten

A stoic Melee-type Artery Gear meant not only to cut down Puppets with her twin swords, but also Puppetized AGs—if not traitorous AGs as well. Even if these facts won't earn her friends, she sees no issue with it as a soldier to the core.

    Rela

CN Release Date: 25.05.2021, Global Release Date: 15.06.2021

Full Name: Rela Pegus
Codename: Hound
Callsign: AG-02
Faction: Autoluna Airborne Division
Class: Air Support

One of the three prototype AGs who is a deadly aim with her sniper rifle and jet thrusters, forming the basis for Aerial-types. Her sharp tongue is her natural way of interacting with most people and hardly changes even with her friends, but she does right by those she deems such.
  • Cold Sniper: Has a stone-cold disposition to match her tendency to grant a sudden death to anyone in her scope.
  • Tsundere: Rela acts cold towards her friends, calling them idiots, dumb, and slow. However, when they are in danger, she will do everything she can to protect them. Mel’s apparent death via Puppetization is enough to cause her to have multiple emotional breakdowns, to the point Nio and Quinn refuse to let Rela into battle.

[Mega Armor] Rela

VA: Rio Tsuchiya
Rarity: 5★

    Mel

Full Name: Mel Hikaro
Codename: Heavy Bunny
Callsign: AG-03A
Faction: Autoluna Airborne Division
Class: Shelling Support

One of the three prototype AGs that became the template for Artillery-types. Her sunny disposition towards everyone is matched only by her love of blasting away foes in sight with her cannons, even if her aim is not much to speak for.
  • Dumb Muscle: She is far from the Union's best thinker, something Rela often needles her with. All her problems are usually whether or not there's bad guys in front of her, and if so, whether she can blow her way through them and obstacles with cannonfire.
  • Genki Girl: She's the most peppy and loudest of the AG quartet. The stern Rela is often annoyed by her antics.
  • Genre Savvy: As an avid consumer of manga and anime, she's the main source of references for a lot of funny situations.
  • Shout-Out: She's watched loads of anime, read plenty of manga, and played through plenty of games. So far:
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: As much as she's all for getting along with people and peace, in her mind, the best way to solving problems is with her cannons.

Autoluna Space Station

Contemptuously hanging in the stars above is Autoluna, a space station once meant for space experiments converted into a literal satellite city for the privileged. It is ruled by Queen Lisa Autoluna.

    Autoluna in General
  • False Utopia: Autoluna initially seems to be a paradise for humans, and is the last safe zone free from puppets. However, it is run by a corrupt monarch who frames the Frontier and Union as being bad compared to Autoluna. Attempts to reveal the truth are punishable by treason and is enough to almost get Fiel executed. Except for the rich, everyone else needs to work to raise their 'contribution' to avoid being exiled to the puppet-infested ground. If this happens, they are usually left to die and are turned into puppets. The Queen is also making plans for 'Project Heaven', turning the most capable humans into Artery Gears against their wills.
  • The Order: The L'Ordre de l'Autoluna, an organization of elite AGs clad in armor to serve the Queen. It is divided into two divisions: Silver, whose members are aristocrats and provide security for queen and city, and Black, those who come from the "common" class and take shady roles no noble would do.

Ruling Body

    Lisa Autoluna (SPOILERS UNMARKED)
The queen of Autoluna, benevolent and graceful as she looks, if a bit silly when it comes to operating technology. That said, one must do well not to underestimate her, especially in the lengths she would go to for world peace.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Lisa Autoluna at first appears to be a kind, easygoing and dorky queen that is Hopeless with Tech. Then she lies to an entire population of humans at Sky Port, makes plans to forcibly turn humans into Artery Gears and send them to their deaths, and proposes a takeover of Frontier fleets to Atlas. Under her command, she constantly promotes false narratives of the Frontier and Union fleets and paints her nation as being superior to them. Her final plan is to take over the Ground and leave anyone who doesn’t fit her high standards to die.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: She actually met the Commander once before she became queen, as first seen in Episode 12, "Beyond Singularity III", then detailed further in Episode 13, "No Regret II" from her point of view. At the time she used Fidel's name, discussing about their philosophies on creating a utopia in exchange for helping the Commander get to Anna Autoluna. The discussion let Lisa see her ideas of a utopia were closer to nihility rather than one full of human spirit. However, they don't remember this even when they meet as the Union's Commander and Queen Autoluna of today.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Queen Lisa Autoluna is extremely bad at understanding technology. She accidentally sends an emergency call instead of a regular one, is unsure if others can hear her, and is unable to figure out how to disconnect. Then in Chapter 10 when Clarice barges into the throne room and they get into a fight, the queen has no problem using the sensors placed around the palace to relay the Puppet Master's hidden position to her knight Isabelle. Clarice calls her out on the "I don't know much about electronic equipment" façade.
  • Straw Nihilist: In stark contrast to her present self, she was this when she just a queen candidate, expecting to die soon once Anna Autoluna takes over her body (the other two candidates at the time, Fidel and Isabelle, wouldn't have qualified) and spending the rest of her days thinking how she could improve the world. It was only after she met the Commander and realized how nihilistic her views on a utopia were, and Fidel sacrificing her life to save hers and restore her voice—not to mention both of them coincidentally telling her they'd be sad to see her die—she gains determination to create that utopia... though unfortunately this passion was ultimately channeled into creating one where she judges who's worthy of it.

    The Previous Queen (SPOILERS UNMARKED)

Anna Autoluna

Inhabitants

    Neisa

    Fiel Forever
An idealistic human reporter of Autoluna. She comes down to the ground for a firsthand look of the conditions there.
  • Born Lucky: Noticed in-universe, Fiel seems to be unnaturally fortunate. This is eventually revealed to be a power of Component O, a substance extracted from Nio's Component Ø, which is capable of rewriting matter, if not reality itself to ensure any outside force cannot harm the holder no matter how convoluted it happens—unless they're the ones doing it to themselves.
  • Precision F-Strike: Fiel does this in response to her efforts in exposing Autoluna’s corruption being repeatedly undermined.

The Frontier Alliance

In spite of the ever-threatening Puppets, precious few means of fighting them and the lack of Artery Gears at the time, the humans left on the Ground were able to band together and form an alliance to wage war against the Puppets. Though there is a council formed by human leaders, their war is dictated by an AI known as the Head, named Atlas.

    Atlas
The AI leading the Frontier's war against the Puppets. Though her ruthless arithmetic involves sacrifices she would allow without reserve, they are the only true safeguard the Frontier has.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: Atlas is an AI in charge of Frontier developed to command Artery Gears in battle with few mistakes. She also looks and acts entirely human, aside from being too logical at times.

    Teufel

CN Release Date: 25.05.2021, Global Release Date: 15.06.2022

Full Name: Teufel
Codename: Black Scorpion
Callsign: AG-043
Faction: Garrison Regiment Atlas
VA: Arisa Sakuraba
Rarity: 5★
Class: Balanced
Type: Molten

Atlas's right-hand Artery Gear, always loyal to her leader no matter what happens.

    Secretary General

The Association

    Caitlyn
A human soldier who was the Commander's partner in their days with the Frontier Association. She joined the Association to fight for a group children she is taking care of.

    Wade Bunard

    General Alaman

Grafframe

    Grafframe in General

    Clarice (Spoilers for Season 1!)

CN Release Date: 29.03.2022, Global Release Date: 28.12.2022

Full Name: Clarice Bunard
Codename: Iris Couples
Callsign: AG-666
Faction: Grafframe
VA: Eri Kitamura
Rarity: 5★
Class: Tactics
Type: Crystal

A mysterious Puppet Master with white hair, a murderous smile, a malicious mind, and a vendetta against the Commander over a supposed betrayal.
  • Battle Couple: Though they aren't a couple when they were still partners, Clarice has feelings for the Commander, and the Commander implicitly trusts her in return. Even Alma worries in Retrogressive Heroes (if "Don't worry, she's not a bad person." is picked) whether she's already out of the race for the Commander seeing them so close. An alternate ending when you make the choice to run away with Clarice from Wade Bunard's conspiracy (and leave your AG trio to their fates as guinea pigs) has them racing on a motorbike together while they're being chased by assailants, acting closer to each other than ever.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The main reason she was taken by the Commander was because they were the kind of person who refused to back down from doing whatever they can to help innocents, a grace they extend to Clarice as well.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She pretends to be an innocent medic new to the field that hates seeing unnecessary deaths. This is revealed to be a ploy to bug the Union’s Artery Gears.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: In Episode 13, the Commander has a choice at the end whether to leave her dead or revive her. Later events however make it clear that she's well and living now sided with the Commander.
  • For the Evulz: A lot of what she does is for the hell of it, especially if it bothers the Commander. For one example in Episode 3, she conspires with Grafframe to damage the relationship between the Union and the Frontier, and disrupt their plan to take out the Rift Octopus, leading to casualties amongst allied AGs, and getting Mel sucked into a portal and straight into the nest of a Puppet Master.
  • Siren Song: She is a Siren, a special type of human who can control people with her voice.
  • Slasher Smile: When she starts showing one of these, it means bad things are about to happen.
  • We Used to Be Friends: The Commander and Clarice (and the prototype AG trio to some extent) used to be very close battle partners and fought their foes together back in their Frontier Association days. Where she had at least been reluctant and ultimately let herself be killed to let the Commander stop Wade, her Puppetized mother brought her back as a Puppet Master and forced on her an order to kill the Commander in revenge for her husband. In the present, she seeks to undermine the Union's successes and sabotage humanity's efforts against the Puppets.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She was the Commander's former partner who now cooperates with Puppet Masters and seeks to kill them out of a grudge.
  • Yandere: She claims to be in love with the Commander, but due to feeling betrayed by them, her obsession has turned violent and she looks for any opportunity to hurt or sabotage the Union. These tendencies were possibly amplified by Puppetization, but she was already acting this way somewhat before.

Puppets

    Puppets in General
  • Bad Boss: Puppet Masters can be outright abusive to the lesser Puppets under their command. The Harpist constantly demands her Puppets play music with her, and breaks any that can't.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Puppet Masters puppetise humans and Artery Gears for reasons beyond their understanding. For instance, the Harpist puppetises others to get them to play in her symphony... Or worse, break them for the unique sounds their destruction makes.
  • Elite Mooks: Known as Puppet Masters, these bosses are much stronger than ordinary Puppets and can command lesser Puppets at will with their Strings. Conventional weaponry and Artery Gear weapons are less effective against them. The Octopus took the combined strength of the Union and Frontier to eliminate.

Puppet Masters

    High-level Puppet Master
  • Starter Villain: She starts as the first boss that introduces the concept of Puppetization and the danger of a single Puppet Master, as well as the first you defeat for the very first story episode.

    Master Lin
A martial artist who has the capability to match augmented humans despite her lack of such augmentations. She was the Commander's teacher in close combat.
  • Badass Normal: In a world where body modifications are virtually a requirement for fighting other likewise modified enemies, Master Lin stands out for making do with just her bare fists and footwork against a lightning-fast Artery Gear with a sword to a draw, making her opponent admit to her prowess Spoiler . It's only fitting that a Badass Teacher like her could train the Commander to be one for all his more mundane traits.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: It's not explained how she can go toe-to-toe with a dangerous AG like Ivana, but she does it anyway without prosthetics or even equipment.
  • Dragon Lady: She rings all the typical bells of an Anime Chinese Girl from her Qipao to her martial arts, but stacked with all the experience and cocksure attitude of an Old Master.
  • I Want Grandkids: Master Lin isn't biologically related to the Commander and QingYan, and she doesn't say it this way, but the way she says, "Ahem, you two are making me impatient. Why don't you guys organize a banquet and make things official?" in Episode 13, "Not a Farewell", carries the spirit of the trope.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: The Commander is this to Lin. QingYan mentions that Lin wanted the Commander to be her successor, but the master herself refutes it since they only learned grappling techniques for human combat.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Her qipao shows off not just the top but also the front parts of her bountiful cleavage, not to mention the slits on both sides presumably meant for her movement.
  • Older Than They Look: At the very least, she used to be in a high-enough position to affect globally-related affairs of Zhimin before she retired, and speaks to the Commander and QingYan like they're younger, if less experienced in worldly matters. Despite all that, she's an attractive woman seemingly in her twenties or thirties.
