    Mega Man Spirits
Robot Master Spirits
  • Numerous Robot Master spirits are stamina battles against multiple Mega Men who only use the attack specific to that Robot Master (Top Man's Top Spin is the dash attack, Slash Man's Slash Claw is the back aerial, etc.) or wield a weapon that resembles said attack (Dive Man wields the Steel Diver weapon to simulate Dive Missiles), with the color change to match. You also have to fight multiple fighters rather than one as a reference to the fact that they're often fought multiple times in the same game.
    • Bomb Man switches things up a bit by using Young Link and his down special (Bomb), since Mega Man doesn't have a Hyper Bomb attack in this game.
    • Guts Man is represented by a large Mega Man who favors his grab — which just happens to be Guts Man's weapon, the Super Arm. He's also hard to launch or make flinch, referencing Guts Man's sturdy build. From time to time, earthquakes happen, referencing how Guts Man makes the earth shake every time he lands after jumping. The stage is Gerudo Valley in Final Destination form, which strongly resembles Guts Man's stage.
    • Cut Man is a duel against two orange Young Links who like to toss their Boomerangs around as Cut Man would with his own Rolling Cutter.
    • Snake Man is represented by Snake, and they favor using Bombchus to attack, a reference to Snake Man's weapon.
    • Galaxy Man is a R.O.B. fought on the Lylat Cruise, a level set in outer space. The stage has low gravity, and the only item that spawns is the Black Hole, representing Galaxy Man's Black Hole Bomb.
    • Elec Man is a masked Pikachu that prefers to use its electric abilities on a stage with an electrified floor as a stage hazard, which is rather self-explanatory.
    • The battle against Crash Man takes place on the Wrecking Crew stage, where there are plenty of destructible blocks to blow up with the Crash Bomber.
    • Shadow Man is a set of Greninja who prefers to spam Greninja's Water Shuriken move, referencing Shadow Man's own weapons.
    • Wood Man is two Mega Men who jump around and spam Leaf Shield, though the original would jump three times before shielding.
    • Wind Man is a Mega Man with a Rocket Belt, and has gusts of wind going on throughout the battle.
    • Knight Man is represented by a Metal Simon who favors Smash attacks, with his whip acting as Knight Man's Knight Crusher attack. The stage is the interior section of Castle Siege to represent the Citadel of Science, Knight Man's stage.
    • Quick Man is a fast-moving and high-jumping Mega Man who frequently attacks you with boomerangs similar to the Quick Boomerang.
    • Gravity Man is a battle on the planet-like Mario Galaxy against Dark Samus, whose floaty movements are eerily perfect for the constantly shifting gravity that occurs throughout the battle. As a Dojo Master, he teaches the Gravity Style which makes spirits jump higher and fall slower.
    • Skull Man is a silver Samus with a permanent Reflect effect to signify Skull Man's Skull Barrier. Reflected projectiles also cause more damage in this battle.
    • Napalm Man is Snake who uses his neutral special to represent the Napalm Bomb. While the name of the weapon has nothing to do with napalm at all, the puppet Snake wearing the Heat Camo is likely a reference to it.

Other Classic Series Characters

  • Dr. Wily is represented by Dr. Mario, but you have to defeat eight metal Mega Men before he spawns, i.e. you have to defeat the eight Robot Masters to get to him.
  • Dr. Light is also represented by Dr. Mario, who is fought in a stamina battle where he tends to run away while a Mega Man ally fights, which represents how he's the Big Good Non-Action Guy of the series.
  • Mettaur is a Pac-Man that shields a lot and doesn't jump, even having a back-shield, which is how a Met normally fights. The battle is fought on the Wrecking Crew stage, an industrial area Mettaurs are normally found in.
  • Bass is represented by another Mega Man, albeit one armed with a Super Scope referencing his rapid-fire capabilities, and is accompanied by a metal Duck Hunt duo referencing his wolf companion Treble and Wily's pet bird Reggae.
  • Proto Man is summoned with the cores of Dr. Light (his creator), Roll (his sister), and a random Shield-type core (to represent his signature Proto Shield).
  • Roll is represented by a female Villager accompanied by her brother in the Living Room stage. Both the Villager and the living room represent her status as a housekeeper robot, being a stage set in a peaceful house and a character known for just living a daily life.
  • Duo is represented by two giant Captain Falcons with Super Armor who favor their neutral specials (Falcon Punch). As a playable character in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Duo mainly attacked with punches and charged Rocket Punches instead of using ranged weapons like the other characters. When you equip Duo, he improves your fist attacks. There being two Captain Falcons in the fight may be a reference to his near-identical Evil Counterpart he was fighting against in the intro to Mega Man 8.
  • The Yellow Devil may be summoned by using the core of a Waddle Doo (due to the fact that he attacks by firing from his eye) and Diskun (another yellow character).
  • Rush may be summoned by the cores of Chibi-Tot (a robot), Boney (the dog of Lucas, a fellow fighter and main character), and a Support core (since he usually supports Mega Man).

X

  • X himself is represented by his predecessor and is fought in a stamina match on New Donk City to represent the Central Highway from X1. His color scheme is a brighter shade of blue to represent the First Armor, he flinches less to reference the weaker knockback compared to the classic series, and he occasionally uses items that represent other X series weapons, like the Fire Flower as a stand-in for the Fire Wave.
  • Sigma is represented through a stamina battle on Midgar with a purple-caped Ganondorf equipped with a beam sword. Both Sigma and Ganondorf are Large and in Charge villain-types with broad shoulders and capes, while the beam sword represents Sigma's own beam saber from X1, and Midgar's Shinra building is a stand-in for Sigma Palace. Also, Sigma is the spirit that guards Mega Man in World of Light.
  • Axl is represented by two gray Mega Men fought in a stamina battle. Both fighters have increased power to their shooting attacks and come equipped with a Ray Gun, referencing Axl's preference for rapid-fire laser guns and there being two Mega Men armed with them is a stand-in for Axl wielding two of them at once.

Legends

  • Mega Man Volnutt is the Blue Bomber fought on The Great Cave Offensive, which fits with how Volnutt's job is a Digger exploring ancient ruins for treasure. They also carry weapons associated to the Digger, like the drill.
  • Tron Bonne is represented as Wendy Koopa (as the Koopa Clown Car is meant to evoke the Gustaff, Tron's signature mech) and is accompanied by 2 miniature yellow R.O.B.s as Servbots. You fight her on Wuhu Island, as a stand-in for Kattelox Island, the setting of the first Mega Man Legends game.
  • Roll Caskett is represented by Isabelle, with Diddy Kong, who represents Data, joining her. The stage is Pilotwings, representing the Flutter flying between islands. Hocotate Bombs also frequently spawn throughout the match, referencing the several rockets she built alongside Tron in an attempt to rescue Volnutt from the Elysium, but with all of their attempts failing as the rockets kept exploding in midair.

Battle Network

  • MegaMan.EXE is obviously represented as the Blue Bomber himself, but the stage you fight him is Hanenbow, which is the closest representation to the Internet, and you fight multiple Mega Men. One of them spawns in with a Bob-omb, which references the Bomb battle chips. He can even hack computers, as it was his M.O. within his games. His status as a Legend-class Spirit is likely a reference to his kill list of absurdly-powerful final bosses from his own series, which also puts him as one of the most powerful incarnations of Mega Man. The battle's theme is "Shooting Star" since Star Force takes place in the future of the Battle Network timeline.
  • ProtoMan.EXE is represented by Shulk, whose Monado is similar in appearance to ProtoMan's beam sword. Due to the typing, you're encouraged to use the MegaMan.EXE spirit since the latter overpowers the former. The stage; Mute City (SNES) resembles the Power Plant map he's first fought in the first game.

ZX and ZX Advent

  • Model X is obviously represented as the Blue Bomber himself, but the stage you fight them is Moray Towers, which fits the urban residential district of Area C/Inner Peace of ZX, and you fight multiple Mega Men, which also fits with how "Mega Man" is a title in this time period rather than a person. The four Mega Men fought in this stage also represent the four guardians from Mega Man Zero, who are now Bio Metals at this point in the timeline. Model X is also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes Model ZX, referencing how Vent/Aile receive Model Z from Giro, and gains the ability to extend the time of transformation items, which references the signature ability of Biometals.

Star Force

  • Geo Stelar and Omega-Xis are represented by Richter (Geo) and Wolf (Omega-Xis) on Moray Towers (a stand-in for Echo Ridge, Geo's hometown) where the bottom half of the level is electrified. They're also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the titular Mega Man of the series.

    Metal Gear Spirits
  • Hal Emmerich/Otacon is represented as Dr. Mario and is joined by a Giant Metal R.O.B. who represents Metal Gear REX, the titular mech designed by Otacon himself. The palette of R.O.B. here and using Hal's Spirit instead of REX's may also be a reference to Metal Gear Mk. 2 and 3, the small field robots he used in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to support Snake on the field. Being a techie, it also makes sense that he can be a requirement to open the computer-locked gate housing the MGS-like dungeon. If you combine his spirit with the Tanks and Infantry from Nintendo Wars, you'll get the Metal Gear REX spirit.
  • Dr. Strangelove is represented by Bayonetta, a fellow short-haired woman with a British accent. Much like her son Otacon, she is also assisted by a R.O.B., referencing her role as an authority figure in the Peace Walker project. As a Support Spirit, she provides the player with a Rage Blaster, which is likely a reference to her resentment towards Big Boss for the murder of The Boss.
  • The Boss is represented by a gray Zero Suit Samus, with the fight being a stamina match on the Garden of Hope with a poison floor representing the field of flowers from Snake Eater and adding to the difficulty. In addition, you need to cross a bridge to get to her, and her positioning means she's one of the first Legend Spirits you may find. IE: you're likely to get your butt handed to you just like Naked Snake did the first time if you're unprepared. Fittingly enough, the new remix of "Snake Eater" plays in the background as a nod to it also playing in her boss fight, and the fight is timed — just like how she had to be defeated before the airstrike she called in caused a Non-Standard Game Over. She also has high HP and defense, referencing how hard to kill she is (she can shrug off bullets in her home game) and her grappling trait is a stand-in for CQC.
  • Paz Ortega Andrade's Support Spirit effect equips you with a Bob-omb at the start of a match, a dark joke about the bombs surgically inserted in her. As if that wasn't enough, her fight is against a giant female Villager who can pocket bombs, made more poignant in that Bob-ombs periodically rain on the battle. You also have to fight a giant R.O.B. imbued with the spirit of Metal Gear ZEKE, referencing Paz using it to try to kill Naked Snake. The fight is also on Gaur Plains to represent Costa Rica.
  • Kazuhira Miller is represented by Ken, another blonde Japanese-American. He is accompanied by 3 Solid Snakes, who represent the three ‘Snakes’ he had provided guidance to throughout his life note . They are fought on Midgar, as its industrialised environment resembles Mother Base
  • Metal Gear ZEKE is represented by R.O.B. on Halberd, which is likely a stand-in for Mother Base. It can be enhanced into Sahelanthropus, which is likely a reference to Huey Emmerich's development on both.
  • Revolver Ocelot is represented by Fox, both being small predatory animals whose characters have a preference for using guns. In addition, the only items that drop in the stage are guns and he has a zap floor, undoubtedly a callback to his infamous electric torture scenes.
  • Naked Snake is a fight against Snake in his camouflage costume on the Distant Planet stage in the rain, reminiscent of the jungle of Metal Gear Solid 3. After taking a lot of damage, several more identical Snakes spawn, but you're only required to KO the original, referencing the body double used by Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V, in addition to his three sons. Also, when enhanced to Big Boss, the spirit gains the Metal Killer trait, a reference to the number of Metal Gears destroyed by the protagonists in the games. The new "Snake Eater" remix plays as a nod towards the game where he was made playable for the first time. He can also be enhanced into Big Boss, fittingly enough.
  • To summon Gray Fox's Spirit, you need the cores of Mighty Gazelle (a cyborg) and Shadow Man (a ninja). "Cyborg Ninja" is what Gray Fox was referred to in Metal Gear Solid when Snake first encountered him, before his true identity was revealed. When fought as a Spirit, he takes on the form of a gold-colored Sheik, who has a similar fighting style.
  • Metal Gear RAY is represented by a Metal Greninja, referencing RAY's amphibious design and high-pressure water cutter.
  • The Gekko from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is represented by a giant-sized Dark Samus, who is barely capable of jumping. Ironically, the spirit itself increases your jumping ability. The fact that it's Dark Samus as the puppet fighter is likely a reference to the fact that she and the GEKKO are both a mish-mash of organics and technology; Dark Samus was the Metroid Prime who absorbed Samus' technological Phazon Suit in order to survive (which is referenced by her Phazon Suit palette), while the GEKKO are robots with organic cloned cow legs.
  • Metal Gear RAY is a Grab-type, whereas Metal Gear REX is a Shield-type, giving RAY type advantage, since RAY was designed to beat REX. However, REX's power and rank is much higher, because when the two models actually fought in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, REX beat RAY.
  • Raiden's Spirit needs the cores of Rosemary (his girlfriend and later wife) and Solidus Snake (his ex-mentor and foster father turned rival). A large part of him being a Legend-type is because of how - by Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - he is blatantly portrayed as the strongest character in the entire series due to becoming a Cyber Ninja.
  • Meryl Silverburg's fight pitches you against a black Zero Suit Samus on Shadow Moses Island. During the fight, everyone takes sudden damage periodically. This is likely a reference to Sniper Wolf shooting at Meryl at a major point.
  • The fight with EVA takes place on the Garden of Hope with Zero Suit Samus paired with Snake to represent Naked Snake. During the battle, their stats increase when eating food, a reference to the food mechanic in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the fact that EVA steals Snake's food at one point, albeit that she was only interested in the instant noodles he may have been carrying and mainly stole the food for Revolver Ocelot as he wanted to eat the same thing Snake eats. As a support spirit, she grants the player a Ray Gun as a reference to her penchant for pistols.
  • Roy Campbell is represented by Snake on Shadow Moses. Due to his status as Mission Control, he's likely giving the puppet Snake directions and help during the battle, evidenced by his attack stat rising periodically. As a support spirit, your controls are proofed against any in-game meddling, as if he was giving you help and advice to continue the mission.
  • Liquid Snake is represented by... well, Snake on Shadow Moses Island. There's a poison cloud during the battle, which is likely the closest you'll get in Smash to FOXDIE.
  • Mei Ling is represented by a female Wii Fit Trainer on Midgar. The stage is likely a stand-in for Outer Haven; Liquid Ocelot's high-tech ship, which Mei Ling had to fight against with the obsolete S.S. Missouri (and won) due to Liquid taking over the SOP system, which prevented Rat Patrol 01 from having anything better-suited to fight with. The fog during the battle is likely a reference to the crew having to look for Outer Haven by themselves due to lack of technology. The Wii Fit Trainer's constant spouting of healthy lifestyle tips may also be the closest you get to Chinese proverbs aside from the codec calls.
  • Solidus Snake is represented by a black Snake due to being the secret third clone of the "Les Enfants Terribles" project. He also carries a Killing Edge, since Solidus also wielded a katana.
  • Major Zero is represented by Captain Falcon on Shadow Moses Island paired with Snake to represent Naked Snake. At some point in the battle, your speed is reduced, which is likely a reference to Skull Face infecting Zero with parasites which reduced him to a catatonic vegetable. By the time he realised this, it was too late, which is referenced in the long period before the effect is placed.
  • Rosemary is represented by Zero Suit Samus in the Living Room, referencing her role as a Non-Action Guy in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as a psychiatrist. During the battle, everyone gets a reduction in defense, referencing the Psyche mechanic where Old Snake would become more vulnerable the lower it is.

    Metroid Spirits
  • The X Parasite is represented by Kirby, another blob-like being that consumes other creatures and copies their abilities. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes the Nightmare (one of the many creatures it assimilated) and gains the ability Lifesteal, which again denotes its status as The Assimilator.
  • Trace is represented by a red Samus, a fellow bounty hunter, who has the ability to turn invisible, which represents his ability to turn invisible when he fires his weapon while standing still.
  • The Gravity Suit is Samus in her gravity suit colors, and your fighter has high gravity on them while Samus doesn't, which references the suit's primary function. Its function when you equip it is lava floor resistance, referencing its secondary function of allowing Samus to traverse extremely hot areas (including being submerged in lava) without being roasted to death.
  • Adam Malkovich is represented by a blue Snake, referencing his status as the "perfect military mind" in-universe. He's also accompanied by Zero Suit Samus as a nod to her time working under him, and the stage is Shadow Moses Island, which looks somewhat similar to the insides of the BOTTLE SHIP.
    • Young Samus is much the same, except replace Shadow Moses Island with the Frigate Orpheon.
  • Gandrayda is a Dark Samus with a Pikachu ally in the Frigate Orpheon. Pikachu is there because of her powers over electricity, while Dark Samus is there because she got corrupted by Dark Samus's Phazon, and the stage is a nod to the Pirate Homeworld, which is where she is fought.
  • Omega Ridley is, of course, Ridley with both his Meta-Ridley Palette Swap and being permanently metal to reference his Cyborg nature.
  • Mecha Ridley is also Ridley in his white Meta-Ridley skin, but has reduced movement speed since it doesn't move around much, and he is also giant since the robot barely fits in the room you find it in.
  • Kraid is a stamina fight against a Giant K. Rool with decreased speed and jump power in Brinstar Depths, which itself is Kraid's Lair (though Kraid himself doesn't appear since the stage is in Omega mode). Both are evil reptiles, and he doesn't really move around much because he rarely moves in his boss fight. He even teaches other spirits to be like him in terms of stats.
  • Mother Brain is fought on the Omega form of Brinstar Depths and is represented by Dark Samus, as they are both antagonists in the Metroid series. Dark Samus favours the neutral special attack, a parallel to how Mother Brain attacks Samus in Metroid: Zero Mission. All of the energy-based attacks have their power increased for the fight as a way to recreate the fight against Mother Brain and Samus. Additionally, Mother Brain herself appears in the battle as an Assist Trophy. Mother Brain is a Shield type spirit, alluding to the fact that she is usually found inside a glass tank, which must be destroyed first before being able to harm her. Mother Brain can also be enhanced into the Mechanical Monster form she assumes in Super Metroid after seemingly being defeated. Equipping the spirit makes the user start the battle as a giant, just like Mother Brain did in Super Metroid.
  • The Fusion Suit is summoned through the cores of a Chozo Statue and a Metroid, since it is the combo of Chozo tech and Metroid DNA.
  • The Diggernaut's spirit battle is against a giant R.O.B. that starts the battle with a drill, since it is a giant robot that drills tunnels.
  • Samus in her Metroid Dread suit is the bounty hunter herself in her Metroid Fusion color palette taking place in the Frigate Orpheon. Accompanied her is the Metroid assist trophy, which foreshadows the reveal that Samus is becoming a Metroid.
  • E.M.M.I. is a R.O.B. that has temporary increased speed, power, and invincibility in a stamina battle. Both combatants have unusually low stamina since the E.M.M.I. robots can instantly kill Samus the moment it sees her with the invincibility to compensate R.O.B.'s low health and that Samus's normal weapons do nothing to it. ROB's low health means that, with a comparably high-powered Spirit equipped, a single fully-powered Charge Shot from Samus can KO ROB. This may have been done with Metroid Dread's Omega Cannon in mind. When Samus finally acquires this weapon that can harm the E.M.M.I., it takes a single fully-charged shot to the robot's weak point to destroy it.
  • The Chozo Soldiers are a team of three Falcos (who are fellow bird people) with the first one with a Killing Edge and the reinforcements wielding a Death Scythe.

    Minecraft Spirits
  • The classic Zombie is played by...a group of Steves wearing the Zombie skin. They have Super Armor since they continuously try to attack even when hit themselves, but they move as slow as rocks, just like in Minecraft proper. As an equip, it's a Novice spirit (they're among the first and weakest types of Mooks you'll come across in the game) that has a weakness to Fire-type attacks, since in direct sunlight, Zombies will catch fire and die.
  • If you download the Creeper outfit, then the Creeper spirit battle will have you fight a group of Mii Brawlers wearing the Creeper outfit (otherwise it's green Mr. Game&Watch). They tend to pick up Bombers, the only items that spawn, to simulate them exploding. They have increased defense from explosion attacks.
  • The Skeletons, known for their archery in their home game, are three Links who spam their Bow attack. They will all suddenly get their Final Smash, the Ancient Bow and Arrow. This may reference the fact that they have a chance of spawning with Enchanted Bows, or may just reference how dangerous they can be on harder difficulties, where they have better aim.
  • The Slime enemies, like the Slimes from Dragon Quest before them, are represented by several Kirby puppets that favor air attacks. To reflect how the Slime in Minecraft is an Asteroids Monster, the battle starts with one large Kirby, but once defeated, several smaller ones take its place, which also "split" into even smaller ones once defeated as well.
  • The Enderman is a battle against a team of said Endermen with increased speed where the first one will summon an Abra to teleport you around the battlefield. The only items that appear are POW Blocks. Endermen are among the most deadly mobs to deal with when they are provoked, capable of warping around quickly. Additionally, they move around blocks in their game of origin, hence why they are so fascinated by POW Blocks. It's spirit is weak to water, as rain is it's biggest weakness in the original game.
  • Villager & Iron Golem first have you against a group of Steve and Alexes who are smaller than usual. After awhile, a giant R.O.B. appears who has super armor and is hard to launch and flinch. The Steve and Alexes favor grabbing and the only items that appear are Cuccos. In Minecraft, many villages are guarded by Iron Golems, which are one of the toughest mobs in the entire game, and most dangerous if it's Villagers are provoked. Additionally, Chickens are common passive mob in Minecraft, though obviously not as dangerous as the Cucco when provoked. Swarming an area with Chickens using eggs is a common way to cause mischief to others though...
  • Ghast is a metal Jigglypuff who favors neutral air attacks and is accompanied by Andross, a blocky white enemy who attacks from afar. The battle takes place in Norfair with lava at the top platforms in order to represent The Nether.
  • The Piglin is represented by either a Killing Edge wielding gold Alex team or Mii Brawler team wearing a Pig outfit if you download said outfit in a timed battle. You start with one normal-sized fighter and then groups of them either in bigger or smaller sizes will show up. Piglins commonly reside in Crimson Woods biomes within The Nether (represented by the Reset Bomb Forest), and have various mechanics revolving around gold, most notably, attacking those not wearing gold armor on sight. Being attacked by a group of Piglins after defeating one may also reference the behavior of Zombie Piglins (formerly known as Zombie Pigmen in the early days of Minecraft), where provoking one caused the entire swarm to close in.
    • The music that plays during this battle ("Cavern" from Metal Gear Solid) sounds similar to the Minecraft's "Pigstep". The music disc for said song can only be found in Piglin filled Bastion Remnants.
  • The Ender Dragon is represented by a giant Ridley (being another demonic-looking dragon), accompanied by two Steves wearing the Enderman skin (since Endermen and the Ender Dragon are both residents of The End). The Ridley has a Critical Health Healing effect active on it, as a nod to the giant End Crystals that are located in the Ender Dragon's territory, which it will use to continuously heal itself unless the player destroys them first.

    Pac-Man Spirits
  • The Bonus Fruit are represented by two Pac-Men who only use their Neutral Specials. They both have to be defeated within 20 seconds, similar to how bonus fruit from Pac-Man's home game has a very short window for you to catch it before it disappears.
  • Turn-to-Blue, the phase the Ghosts adopt when Pac-Man eats a Power Pellet, is a fight against four blue Mr. Game & Watches on the Wrecking Crew stage, and they try their best to avoid you the whole match (which is timed, to act as if the Power Pellet's effects are wearing off).
  • The Ghosts in their normal form is a team battle against a red Kirby (Blinky), Jigglypuff (Pinky), Squirtle (Inky), and Pac-Man (Clyde) on Pac Land. The Ghosts themselves appear as Assist Trophies.
  • Boss Galaga is represented by a team of Pac-Mans who prefer using their grab, as it's the tractor beam used from the game. It's also on Lylat Cruise to represent the space setting and the Boss Galaga items show up in large quantities with the Galaga Medley playing, obviously.

    Persona Spirits
General
  • The mysterious and mystical Igor is represented by the mage Robin. Assist Trophy items will constantly spawn for you to use, as stand-ins for Personas, since Igor is the one to explain what Personas are and introduces you to Persona Fusion in the original Persona games. The book Robin carries could also allude to the Persona Compendium that houses the Personas Joker creates. Both also have connections with evil god-like beings, with Robin being Grima's vessel and Igor being impersonated by Yaldabaoth. As a nod to the theme of "rehabilitation" invoked by Igor in Persona 5, you start with 300% damage and have to face several Ridleys before you can face Robin himself, but you're healed back to full as the fight progresses. The battle takes place in Kalos Pokémon league, invoking both the Velvet Room's iconic blue color as well as the round shape it had in Persona 5.
Persona 5
  • Generally speaking, the battles against each of the Phantom Thieves individually pit the player against a primary opponent that represents the Thief, along with either another character or Assist Trophy to act as their Persona. To push the analogy further, these battles end as soon as the Thief stand-in is defeated.
  • Morgana puts you against a tiny Pikachu Libre, a similarly Ridiculously Cute Critter with a mask, and the two also share a voice actor in Japanese. His Persona is a black Incineroar representing Zorro. Throughout the fight, there are several references to Morgana's affinity for Garu spells, such as dangerously high winds on occasion, as well as Incineroar carrying an Ore Club, which creates tornados with heavy swings. Pikachu Libre herself carries a Killing Edge, since Morgana's weapon is a scimitar. As such, his Spirit boosts Sword attacks too. He also shares the Ace Spirit rank with Igor and Caroline and Justine, possibly referencing his real origin in the Velvet Room.
  • Ryuji Sakamoto is represented by the similarly boisterous and loud Captain Falcon, who wields a Home Run Bat to reflect his large swinging weapons, and his Spirit boosts your Battering Items power. His Persona, Captain Kidd, is portrayed by a Mii Gunner dressed as a pirate. The battle takes place on top of Luigi's Mansion as a stand-in for Kamoshida's Palace.
  • Ann Takamaki is portrayed by fellow blonde, skin-tight suit wearing, whip-wielding Ms. Fanservice Zero Suit Samus in a red costume. Her Persona, Carmen, is represented by a red Peach who has a Fire Flower to simulate her Agi spells, and the Spirit itself boosts your Fire attacks. The battle takes place in the castle portion of the Castle Siege stage, as another stand-in for Kamoshida's Palace.
  • Yusuke Kitagawa has you square off against Chrom, whom he shares voice actors with in both English and Japanese. The two are also both blue haired swordsmen. Meanwhile, Dedede is a stand in for his Persona, Goemon. Vince, a fellow artist, also appears as a hostile Assist Trophy. He is fought on the Battlefield version of Suzaku Castle, which resembles Madarame's Palace, where Yusuke was originally recruited. Coincidentally, Madarame's English voice actor also voices Ryu, and Suzaku Castle is also Ryu's home stage.
  • Makoto Niijima pits you against an all black Sheik, who has a similar costume to her own; another possibility is the similarity between Sheik - who is Zelda disguised as a man - and Makoto's Persona Johanna, who is based on Pope Joan, who according to legend was a woman who disguised herself as a male priest. Assisting her is an invisible Wario who won't stop using his Wario Bike, standing in for her Cool Bike Persona, Johanna. The battle takes place on the Omega form of Dracula's Castle to stand in for another floating fortress, Kaneshiro's Palace - the dungeon where she joins the party. Since Makoto uses gauntlets as her weapons, she boosts your Fist attacks.
  • Futaba Sakura is represented by the orange haired Inkling girl. The comparisons between both characters' orange Bobcut hairstyles has been a meme ever since Persona 5 first came out and ties in with a Mementos conversation where she muses about getting a paintball gun to match her teammate's firearms. You fight her on the Battlefield form of Mushroomy Kingdom, which resembles the desert surrounding her Palace. You will also have to contend with the Wily Capsule Assist Trophy, representing her UFO-styled Persona, Necronomicon, and Boss Galagas will frequently appear, referencing her love for video games as well as Necronomicon abducting her in a similar manner. Her battle theme being the remix of Beneath the Mask, which was originally the town overworld theme, rather than the battle theme Last Surprise, could be in reference to her status as a non-combatantnote ; that actually plays into her battle, as the Inkling will never actively try to attack and instead run for the Galagas instead while the player has to defeat her in a set period of time. Her Spirit gives you Critical Health Attack, alluding to her ability to provide stat buffs to the party if they're in a pinch.
  • Haru Okumura is represented by the pink female Villager, which matches her color scheme and peaceful personality, and also grows a tree and wields an axe for one attack, referencing both Haru's love of gardening and weaponry. Her Persona Milady takes a page out of Ann's battle by having a Daisy with a Super Scope as her stand-in, with the Super Scope a reference to the absurd amount of weaponry hidden under Milady's dress. Vegetables are a theme through the match as seen with Villager and Daisy's attacks and the random waves of food (all salad) that spawn on stage - the Tomadachi Life rooftop, again referencing Haru's role as caretaker of the school garden and her Confidant's ability to provide the party with SP-restoring vegetables.
  • Goro Akechi is represented by a white Marth wielding a beam sword in reference to Akechi's primary weapon. A giant Pit acts as a stand in for his Persona, Robin Hood. The battle takes place in Fourside, representing Sae Niijima's Palace, where he first joins the Phantom Thieves. His battle theme is Rivers in the Desert, which plays during the fight with his father, Masayoshi Shido. The reversed controls may also be a reference to his ability to inflict psychotic episodes onto people. His Spirit gives you Item Gravitation, which synergies well with the collective Phantom Thieves Spirit's ability, since he automatically comes with early Confidant combat boosts when he joins, making him an invaluable team player in the Casino Palace.
  • Caroline and Justine are portrayed by the two Ice Climbers. You take Sudden Damage frequently and the battle is timed, reflecting their Superboss fight, in which they'll constantly throw high level spells at you while you're on a Turn limit to clear their various phases. Taking too long causes you to suddenly be on max damage, reflecting how the two can end the battle instantly with an All-Out Attack if you take too long on each phrase. And like the Igor spirit, this fight takes place on the Kalos Pokémon League. They give you a Black Hole when equipped, which pulls items and foes together into one spot, which can be interpreted as an analogy to the Persona Fusion system that they are tasked with handling (You're bringing things together as if fusing them, see?).
  • The collective Phantom Thieves battle pits the player in a rematch against all of the Thieves' Spirits, with the exceptions of the pink Villager (representing Haru)note  and white Marth (representing Akechi), culminating in a one-on-one encounter with Joker, who randomly gains a full Final Smash meter that gives him the ability to call upon his teammates for an All-Out Attack. The battle takes place on Mementos with "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There" playing as a reference to the intro to Persona 5. Daybreak pieces also spawn, alluding to the "The Daybreakers" OVA made to promote Persona 5, as well as Satanael's Sinful Shell that Joker uses to finish off Yaldabaoth during the Final Boss fight. The Spirit itself lets the user be a true thief by allowing them to swipe nearby items automatically with no need for input.
    • The individual Phantom Thieves' ranks are also somewhat significant. In addition to Morgana's Ace class above, Ryuji and Ann are two of the founding members of the team after changing Kamoshida's heart, while the rest of the team joined in sometime after, making them Novice spirits. Goro, meanwhile, is a fellow Advanced spirit as he's been entering the Metaverse of his own volition prior to "joining" the Phantom Thieves. The collective spirit is a Legend class as, when all members put their talents to use, they're capable of taking down any obstacle, even corrupt gods.

Persona 5 Strikers

  • Though there's nothing especially special about Sophia's spirit as an equip, the method of acquiring her is quite fitting to her character. In Strikers, she is an advanced AI program that becomes data and enters Joker's phone when she exits the Metaverse. Here, when you exit your Switch copy of Persona 5 Strikers, she'll transfer her Spirit into Smash through the Save Data. Her Spirit Battle has her represented by a white Ness who spams his Up and Down Smash attacks, since her weapon is a pair of giant yo-yos. Standing in for her "Persona", Pithos, is a gang of Metal R.O.Bs who constantly fire their laser beams. If Joker has already been purchased, the stage is Mementos with "Last Surprise" as the theme music, befitting a character from a spin-off of Persona 5. Otherwise, the stage is New Pork City, which stands in for the similarly pink, purple, and gaudy theme-park/city Shibuya Jail where she is recruited. The theme music is also instead "Light Plane (Vocal Mix)", which has a surprisingly serene tone to it, akin to Sophia’s own Leitmotif, "The AI and The Heart".

    Pikmin Spirits
  • Smoky Progg is represented by Mario, who occasionally turns metal mid-fight. This is a reference to the Smoky Progg's near-invulnerability to attacks until he roars.
  • Both Brittany and Charlie's spirits are represented by Alph, and get stronger after eating healing food.
  • The Red Pikmin are represented by 12 tiny Incineroar with increased fire attack power, who fight on the Garden of Hope where the floor is lava. It's also a stamina match where each Incineroar only has 10 HP, because Pikmin are easily killed.
  • Bulborb is a stamina battle against a giant red Yoshi who only uses his neutral special (Egg Lay, which devours the opponent and turns them into an egg). The battle takes place on the Distant Planet, where the real Red Bulborb shows up and tries to devour you.
  • The Yellow Pikmin are a group of tiny Pichu in an electrified field, representing their electric properties. They also have 10 HP each.
  • The Blue Pikmin are a bunch of tiny Squirtle that get a boost to their water attacks, representing their affinity for water. The stage is also the Garden of Hope with the rain always on as to further reference this affinity. They have 10 HP each.
  • The Purple Pikmin are represented by several tiny Donkey Kongs who deal damage when falling, in reference to their increased weight versus other Pikmin types. They each have 20 HP, since they are slightly sturdier than other Pikmin.
  • The Rock Pikmin are a bunch of tiny Kirbys that use their stone special, with your fighter having high gravity on them, referencing how they primarily attack by bumping into their enemies a lot. Like the Purple Pikmin, they each have 20 HP.
  • The Flying Pikmin are a team of Jigglypuff that float around and use air attacks. They have 10 HP each.
  • The Iridescent Glint Beetle is a golden Squirtle (since both have shells) that tends to avoid conflict, much like how it runs around and eventually runs away. It's also timed since the beetle only shows up for a limited amount of time.
  • To summon the Burrowing Snagret, you need Raphael the Raven (since it’s a bird) and Rattly (no doubt due to the Snagret’s long body). As a fight, the Snagret is represented by a blue Charizard on the Garden of Hope, while the Snagret appears occasionally to attack you.
  • Louie can be summoned with the cores of both Snorlax (due to Louie’s laid-back attitude and large appetite) and Postman (since he works for a delivery company). You also need a Grab Type core, likely referencing how Pikmin must be grabbed and thrown to attack enemies.
  • Oatchi is a giant yellow Kirby teamed up with Alph, who represents the avatar. The Kirby will damage foes by ramming into them, similar to Oatchi's dash ability, and Hocotate Bombs frequently appear in reference to Oatchi being part of the rescue team.

    Pokémon Spirits
Generation I
  • Venusaur is represented by a giant green Ivysaur, its midway form, and the battle is set in the Garden of Hope with poisoned floors, a reference to Ivysaur and Venusaur's dual Grass/Poison-typing.
  • Blastoise is a giant version of its first form, Squirtle, with a Super Scope to represent its cannons. It will also gain defense buffs, referencing its defensive stats.
  • Metapod is represented by a Yoshi who mostly defends, and gains increased defense after a while, mirroring Metapod's Harden move. The floor is sticky, since Metapod is a Bug-type evolved from Caterpie, who uses String Shot to slow down opponents.
  • Pidgey is a tiny Pit who jumps a lot. During the battle, heavy wind shows up since Pidgey and it's evolved forms are known for wind based attacks such as Gust and Hurricane.
  • Arbok is Ridley on a poisoned floor. Your attack power is reduced during the fight, as if it was using its Intimidate ability on you.
  • Sandshrew is a fight against a small yellow Bowser in the desert-styled Mushroomy Kingdom. It also loves the Pitfalls that spawn to show off its digging abilities. When you equip it, you start off with a Screw Attack, allowing you to perform a Rolling Attack no matter who you play as.
  • Vulpix is a tiny Fox since Vulpix is known as...well, the fox Pokémon. He starts the battle with a Poké Ball that has the Pokémon in it with the battle taking place Saffron City, which is native to the routes near the city.
  • Dugtrio is three red Kirbys (the closest to being brown) who prefer to be close to each other in the Ground stage of Pokémon Stadium. During the battle, earthquakes will appear to simulate the move of the same name.
  • Meowth is a pair of golden Isabelles on Golden Plains, referencing the species' adoration for coins and anything else shiny.
  • Psyduck is represented by Squirtle, also a non-evolved water type, but can occasionally flip the stage upside down to reference its psychic powers. It's also fought in Saffron City, a location that, much like Psyduck, made its first appearance in the Gen. I games.
  • Arcanine is played by a giant Duck Hunt with the stage being a Battlefield Guar Plain with lava flooring. It has increased speed to simulate its signature move Extreme Speed.
  • Abra is a tiny Mewtwo, and all Poké Balls spawned contain (what else?) Abra. It's also a timed match, as Abra is infamous for fleeing battle at the first opportunity.
  • Machamp is represented by two giant Captain Falcons who spam their jab attacks to represent its four arms and Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs, and the location is the Wrecking Crew stage, since Machamp are typically employed in heavy-duty environments such as construction work.
  • Geodude is represented by four gray Kirbys who frequently use their down special (Stone), and are fought on a permanently Ground-typed Pokémon Stadium, since Geodude is a Rock/Ground type.
  • Rapidash is represented by fellow fire-type Charizard. Its increased move speed mirrors Rapidash's own blazing speed.
  • Slowpoke is represented by a pink Luigi, but with reduced movement speed to show how slow this 'mon really is. It also reverses your controls after a while to indicate its psychic powers. As a Dojo Master, its prime purpose is to use Amnesia on a spirit to make it forget any styles it's learned.
  • Magneton has you battle three Metal Pac-Men in the Electric field in Pokémon Stadium 2.
  • Farfetch'd is a Falco who is holding a Lip's Stick as a substitute for its leek. The battle taking place in Golden Plains could be a reference to its Japanese name, which is a proverb that roughly means an unlikely but fortunate coincidence.
  • Gengar is represented as a purple Donkey Kong battled on the Battlefield variant of Luigi's Mansion with a sleeping effect applied to the floor representing Gengar's Hypnosis attack.
  • Electrode as the spherical Pac-Man has you fight with Bob-ombs falling down the stage and the opponent distracted by items, which are only exploding items since Electrode is notorious for exploding.
  • Cubone's battle takes place on Luigi's Mansion as a stand-in for the similarly ghost-filled Pokémon Tower. Boomerangs, which naturally operate just like Cubone's signature Bonemerang attack, are the only items that spawn.
  • Hitmonlee is a pair of yellow Captain Falcons who almost exclusively use kicking attacks, including the Falcon Kick.
  • Weezing is represented by the similarly gassy Wario in a Pokémon Stadium filled with poison gas, one of Weezing's basic attacks. Oddly, it boosts your fire and explosion attacks when you equip it, but Weezing is known to be able to use Explosion and can learn Fire-type attacks.
  • Chansey is represented by Jigglypuff wearing a Pokémon Nurse hat on a stamina match that is occasionally healed, referencing Chansey's role as a nurse.
  • Kangaskhan is a brown Bowser who is assisted by a Larry to represent its child that it's always seen carrying. When enhanced into Mega Kangaskhan, it has a chance of granting its equipped fighter a Double Final Smash, just as the form's signature ability in its home series allows it to attack twice in one turn. It's also got very high stats for an Ace, being in the low 10,000s, which is slightly higher than a couple of weaker legendary spirits. This is possibly referencing Mega Kangaskhan's infamy.
  • Tauros is represented by Bowser with increased speed, the ability to deal damage by charging into another fighter, and trouble stopping, all referencing Tauros' tendency to charge at incredible speed. As for why they're represented by Bowser, it's due to his ox-inspired horns.
  • Lapras is represented by the Ice Climbers in a battle on the rocky part of Wuhu Island, since Lapras is a Water/Ice-type. You also lose the ability to swim, as you need Lapras' help to sail over bodies of water without drowning. Lapras is also needed to cross the ocean in World of Light.
  • Ditto is a dark blue Kirby that favors his neutral special attack to absorb and copy his opponent's ability. He also starts the battle with a Poké Ball that spawns Ditto itself to create a second Kirby.
  • Eevee is represented by 3 Yoshis in red/blue/yellow colors, all with Super Leaves equipped, with yellow starting with a Screw Attack and red starting with a Superspicy Curry. These Yoshis represent Eevee's first 3 evolutions (Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon). Blue Yoshi also starts with a Poké Ball that is guaranteed to send out Eevee itself when the fight starts.
  • Porygon is represented as a wireframe Little Mac accompanied by Virtua Fighter's Akira to represent its primitive computer graphics body.
  • Snorlax is a giant, black K. Rool that doesn't do anything except eat food every few seconds, just like the Pokémon itself does nothing but sleep and eat unless forcefully awakened. The match is set on Tortimer Island, possibly referencing the island where Ash caught his Snorlax in the anime. King K. Rool also recovers health over time, referencing Snorlax's common connection with the item Leftovers (and, by extension, that of its pre-evolution, Munchlax).
  • Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres's combined spirit is represented by three Lucases who mainly use PSI attacks that match up with their Japanese names and elements: PK Fire, PK Thunder, and PK Freeze, which is also a reference to the three main fire, ice, and electric moves (Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam).
  • Mew is in a tiny Mewtwo, its clone, in a fog-covered Kongo Jungle in a timed battle, periodically becoming invisible. Mew is shown to reside deep in jungles in several different canons, most famously the first Pokémon movie. Its power of invisibility is frequently mentioned in Pokédex entries.

Generation II

  • Ampharos is represented by Pichu, another Electric-type from Pokémon Gold and Silver. Speaking of electricity, the floor is covered in it!
  • Miltank is represented by a Jigglypuff that spams Rollout as an Ascended Meme to Whitney's Miltank from Pokémon Gold and Silver.
  • Wobbuffet is 2 K. Rools (representing its separate male and female forms) that have Franklin Badges equipped, and favor their counter move. They act a lot like how an actual Wobbuffet fights, which is to counter anything that hits them.
  • Marill is a blue Kirby that resists water and ice attacks, much like the Water type. The sprit's ability lets you attack by dashing, resembling its appearance as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Melee.
  • Wooper, as a small water Pokémon, is possessing a tiny Squirtle, with periodic earthquakes due to it also being Ground type.
  • Smeargle is a male Inkling who favors his side Smash (Inkbrush). Playing with the Pokémon's art aesthetic even further, its stage is WarioWare Inc. with its crudely-drawn background, and Vince from Art Academy appears as an enemy Assist Trophy to paint over your character and obscure your vision.
  • Raikou, Entei, and Suicune are a Pikachu, Incineroar, and Greninja (matching each Pokémon’s type) on a lava-floor version of Suzaku Castle to simulate the Burned Tower and the trio's tragic history with the location.
  • Tyranitar is fellow reptile King K. Rool and is fought on Mushroomy Kingdom, which combined reference its Rock/Dark typing. You take occasional sudden damage during the battle as if you were affected by its Sand Stream ability.
  • Lugia is a giant Falco (Another bird), on Pirate Ship, seeing as it’s the guardian of the sea. Lugia itself will be summoned via a Poké Ball, and there’s also heavy wind in effect. Several of Lugia’s Pokédex entries make note of the fact that it can create 40-day-and-night-long storms just by lightly fluttering its wings.
  • Ho-Oh is represented by a giant Charizard, that other flying fiery Pokémon, with a permanent Superspicy Curry effect, replicating its usual Sacred Fire attack when summoned from a Poké Ball in Smash games. The fact that this makes it a huge pain to capture could also be viewed as reflecting its origin. The stage is the Blazing Chamber of the Kalos Pokémon League, which features Ho-Oh as a stage hazard — while this can take Charizard out for you, it has increased resistance to fire attacks, so don't count on it. Additionally, in order to summon Ho-Oh, one spirit that you need is that of Raikou, Entei, & Suicune, referencing that Ho-Oh is their trio master. Also, you need Ho-Oh's status as the "Rainbow Pokemon" to make a rainbow bridge.
  • Skarmory is a metal Falco, since both are birds, and the metal status is to allude to its Steel typing.
  • Bellossom is a Jigglypuff that has a flower, with Bellossom itself only appearing through Poké Balls, and Jigglypuff going after Lip's Sticks, all of these fit the theme of Bellossom's flowers.
  • Sudowoodo is a Ridley who is weak to water attacks, as it's a Rock-type and you have to spray it with water in order to catch it. It is accompanied by two red Ridleys, but you only need to defeat the real one (the green one) to win, probably in reference to the creature's habit of disguising itself. All three Ridleys only use fully-charged smash attacks, granting them super armor as they are in their charging pose. This references how they disguise themselves as trees by posing as one and remaining motionless.
  • Unown is a battle on Temple against a swarm of tiny Mr. Game & Watches. Both are monochrome beings with bizarre powers, and Unown's true power can only be unleashed as a cooperative group. Just as Unown are found exclusively in ruins covered in odd writing, the stage features Hylian writing on its platforms.
  • Togepi can be summoned using Gordo (the classification for Togepi is the Spike Ball Pokémon) and a Mega Eggdozer (it wears the remain of the egg it hatched from).

Generation III

  • Shedinja is represented as a green Mr. Game & Watch with 1 HP, with its invulnerability to most attacks in the game shown as a permanent Franklin Badge and an invincibility effect constantly renewing itself (leaving you maybe one second to get a good hit in before it's back up).
  • Groudon is a giant red Bowser on Battlefield form Norfair with lava floors, which all reference Groudon's massive size and preference for resting in magma without issue. It's also an enhanceable Spirit that becomes Primal Groudon, which gives it fire/explosive resistance.
  • Kyogre is a giant Squirtle fought on Great Bay, an oceanic setting like Kyogre's native Hoenn region, with Kyogre being a guaranteed spawn from Squirtle's Poké Ball. Like Groudon, Kyogre's spirit can become Primal Kyogre when enhanced, and it gives you water/freezing resistance.
  • Gardevoir is a green Rosalina, another elegant lady, who starts with a Franklin Badge and also uses various projectile items. Gardevoir also shows up via Poké Ball.
  • Latias & Latios are a blue and red Charizard fought in Delfino Plaza, a nod to the canal city of Alto Mare, the city featured in the 5th Pokémon movie Pokémon Heroes: Latias & Latios. Guess who their Poké Ball spawns.
  • Salamence is a blue Charizard, and its fight has strong winds blowing which reference its Flying Type. The music that plays during the fight is Zinnia's theme, referencing Zinnia owning a Salamence as her primary Pokémon in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.
  • Flygon is a green Ridley that fights in Gerudo Valley while earthquakes occur, referencing its Ground/Dragon typing and habitat.
  • Rayquaza is a fellow large dragon in the form of the green Ridley. The stage is the Kalos Pokémon League, where Rayquaza itself appears as a stage hazard.
  • Milotic is a Mewtwo that shields often and has buffed defense (referencing its Marvel Scale Ability), fought in the Kalos Pokémon League's Flood Chamber.
  • Absol is represented by Wolf holding a scythe, in reference to its scythe-like horn and tail. It's fought on the Spear Pillar, which is on top of Mt. Coronet, where wild Absol can be encountered in Platinum.
  • Blaziken, a kickboxing chicken, is Captain Falcon with buffs to kicks and knee moves. It's also extremely fast, as if this particular Blaziken had Speed Boost.
  • Deoxys is represented by a Legend-class orange Mewtwo, another legendary Psychic-type. It also summons a real Deoxys from a Poké Ball, and has boosted attack power in reference to its nigh-peerless Attack and Special Attack stats. Lastly, the battle takes place in Mario Galaxy, an allusion to Deoxys' extraterrestrial origins.
  • Metagross is represented by a blue R.O.B. to reference Metagross' Ambiguous Robot characteristic. Periodic earthquakes appear to represent the move Earthquake as well as Steven's Theme playing as a Metagross is his weapon.
  • Jirachi can be summoned by using the cores of three other star-related spirits: Star Rod, Luma, and Starlow.

Generation IV

  • Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf have a trio of Mewtwo (a fellow Psychic-type) in yellow, red, and blue for their battle. The battle is set on Spear Pillar, which is in their native Sinnoh region (and where you might see the real lake trio).
  • Arceus is Corrin, whose dragon form resembles Arceus. Poké Balls will also only spawn Arceus, and strong wind will trigger on occasion, attempting to blow you off the stage where Arceus' attack can spike you into the abyss. And the fight is at Spear Pillar, which is right below Arceus' domain, the Hall of Origin. The actual spirit itself has both its stats being 2006 at Level 1; Pokémon Diamond and Pearl came out in 2006. Arceus' stats being equal across the board is also referencing that Arceus has equal stats in Pokémon, with each of its stats being 120.
  • Giratina is a giant Mr. Game and Watch, representing its extradimensional nature. Giratina's spirit is also fought at Spear Pillar, in this case because of its appearance there in Platinum. Poké Balls will only spawn Giratina.
  • Dialga is a giant Lucario, a fellow Steel-type Pokémon, and is fought on Spear Pillar (again) with Dialga being summoned to the battlefield as a stage hazard.
  • Palkia is a giant Mewtwo, who has powers of teleportation that evoke Palkia's spacial manipulation, and is fought on, you guessed it, Spear Pillar, with Palkia summoned onto the battlefield as a stage hazard.
  • Cresselia is a giant Pink Yoshi, having a vaguely similar body shape, and is fought on Spear Pillar (yet again) with Cresselia as a stage hazard. Yoshi will also gain increased defenses over time, referencing Cresselia's status as a Stone Wall. In addition, she is a Shield-type Spirit.
  • Abomasnow is a white DK that is weak to fire, one of the mon's biggest weaknesses. The floor is also covered in Ice to reference its Ice-typing, and Abomasnow itself comes out of the Poké Ball DK has. The stage is the Summit, referencing the snowy areas where Abomasnow is found (like the higher elevations of Mount Coronetnote ).
  • Rotom is represented by a pair of Pichus who fight you on the PictoChat stage, as if they've possessed a Nintendo DS.
  • Garchomp is represented by a blue Charizard on Spear Pillar. In reference to its pseudo-legendary status, it has increased speed and power.
  • Regigigas, an enormous golem, is represented by a giant R.O.B. Its speed and attack power increase after a while to replicate the effects of its Slow Start ability. The Support Spirit grants the player Slow Super Armor.
  • Shaymin is fellow Grass-type Ivysaur and is fought on Yoshi's Island, a flowery island similar to the Flower Paradise. To complete the motif, you have a flower on your head for the entire fight.

Generation V

  • Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion have a green Lucario, a blue Yoshi, and a brown Duck Hunt Duo (representing Virizion, Cobalion, and Terrakion, respectively), all with Beam Swords, since their signature attack is Sacred Sword.
  • Genesect is a bunch of R.O.B.s that spam their laser special, imitating Genesect's signature attack. It also shows up from any Poké Balls as well to use its laser attack. The R.O.B.s being in a group of four may reference the Genesect Army, which consists of four normal-colored Genesect following a shiny leader.
  • Reshiram's spirit is a giant grey Charizard, fought on Unova Pokémon League. They both are Fire-type draconic Pokémon, matching types exactly if Charizard were to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X like it could in Smash 4, and grey is as close as Reshiram's all-white colouration as Charizard can get in Smash (though it does have blue eyes and a red tail flame that match Reshiram's, the latter when in "overdrive" mode). As a bonus, the grey Charizard costume is the same one used when the female Pokémon Trainer's Hilda Palette Swap is selected; during the climax of Pokémon Black, Hilbert/Hilda summons and catches Reshiram to battle N's Zekrom at his castle, emerging over the Unova Pokémon League.
  • Zekrom is a giant black-and-yellow Dark Samus, fought on Unova Pokémon League. They both are black-coloured entities with electric abilities (or at least according to the in-game elements), with a brighter counterpart (Samus/Reshiram) and born from a separate entity, albeit in opposite ways (a single dragon splitting into Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem/Metroid Prime absorbing Samus' Phazon suit).
  • White Kyurem and Black Kyurem spirits can only be made by combining a Kyurem core with a core of Reshiram or Zekrom, respectively. Just like how White Kyurem and Black Kyurem are a fusion of Kyurem and the appropriate dragon.
  • Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) is a green Lucario fought on Skyworld with high winds constantly in effect, and Lucario starting the battle with the whirlwind-generating Ore Club.
  • Meloetta (Aria Forme) is a team of Jigglypuff on a sleep-inducing floor with Meloetta herself appearing via Poké Ball, really hammering in the fact that it is a singing Pokémon.
  • Zoroark's battle starts off against Wolf — another dark Fox in a sense — with a Poké Ball containing Zoroark. However, after Wolf is knocked out, three Lucarios appear that you'll have to contend with. Zoroark's design and marketing were an attempt to replicate the positive reception Lucario had previously gotten.

Generation VI

  • Mega Lucario has you fight its normal counterpart with increased Aura power and it being able to use its Final Smash which is, of course, its Mega Evolution.
  • Dedenne is represented by Pichu, both of which are Pokémon related to and smaller than Pikachu.
  • Chespin is represented with the playable Grass-type starter, Ivysaur, on Kongo Jungle 64 who spam their neutral special, with only Chespin itself able to come out of Poké Balls.
  • Zygarde 50% starts with one big Yoshi that splits into many smaller Yoshis that resemble its pieces. It also reaches Legend status once enhanced to its complete form, as it is also ranked as a Legendary in Pokémon.
  • Diancie is two Franklin Badge-equipped Kirbys that spam their rock move, for obvious reasons. Mega Diancie, which Diancie can be enhanced into, gives its equipped fighter a Franklin Badge, a nod to the creature's own reflective power of Magic Bounce.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y is a Mewtwo that can get instant Final Smashes, since Mewtwo's Final Smash is Mega Mewtwo Y.
  • Inkay is a blue Inkling (since both are squids) that have periodic earthquakes as a nod to how its signature Topsy-Turvy move works in Smash. An Inkay also spawns from a Poké Ball to use the move itself.
  • Aegislash is two golden Meta Knights that fight you one at a time: The first constantly shields itself and rarely attacks, while the second is far more aggressive. This references Aegislash's signature Ability, Stance Change, which allows it to switch between Shield Form and Blade Form for defending and attacking, respectively.
  • Volcanion is a giant Bowser fought on Norfair, all in reference to its fire typing. The stage is covered in fog due to Volcanion's ability to produce steam. You also take constant damage, probably a nod to the burn status condition that Volcanion is very good at inflicting.

Generation VII

  • Alolan Raichu is its pre-evolved form Pikachu wearing the hat worn by the female protagonist in Sun and Moon in an electrified floor since its ability allows it increased speed during an Electric Terrain. The battle takes place in a Battlefield Tortimer Island, similar to the Alola region. Of course, the opponent also has a Poké Ball with an Alolan Raichu.
  • Alolan Vulpix also has you fight Fox like its Kantonian counterpart only with the Fox being gray, the battle taking place on a Battlefield Summit to represent the habitat of Alolan Vulpix including a fog effect, and the Poké Ball Fox holding has an Alolan Vulpix inside instead.
  • Alolan Exeggutor is a giant Palutena, being a statuesque character already with green hair to represent its tree leaves. It prefers to use her Up Smash, a pillar of light to nod at its length, while taking place on the tropical Tortimer Island to represent Alola. Its ability when equipped grants a Back Shield, similar to how the head on Alolan Exeggutor's tail wards off attacks from behind.
  • Mimikyu is a Pikachu in Luigi's Mansion, with Mimikyu showing up with the Poké Ball. Since Mimikyu mimics Pikachu, it would make sense he would possess him, and the mansion is a callback to the haunted Mart where Totem Mimikyu is fought.
  • Rowlet is a tiny Ivysaur, the evolution of a fellow Grass starter. In reference to it also being part Flying, strong winds blow during the battle.
  • Solgaleo is a Golden Incineroar (since both are feline Pokémon from Alola) with Solgaleo himself always coming out of the Poké Ball.
  • Lunala is a Golden Ridley (as both resemble bats) with Lunala herself always coming out of the Poké Ball. You also fight it on the Omega form of the Luigi's Mansion stage due to the huge moon in the background.
  • Necrozma is a Golden Mewtwo (as both are Psychic-types) and the golden coloring references Ultra Necrozma, who has a similar color scheme. In addition, its profile picture indicates it's a black Mewtwo under the gold, like how Necrozma's main form is black. Necrozma's ability as a support spirit is making the user immune to gravity changes, as a nod to Necrozma being able to naturally learn the move Gravity.
  • Togedemaru is a team of Spiky-Eared Pichu with a bunch of Unira spawning, referencing its spikes.
  • Pyukumuku is represented by 4 black Kirbys, each equipped with a Unira to start, along with a Pyukumuku Pokémon assist. It takes place on the Wii Resort beach, representing a minigame found in Pokémon Sun and Moon where you can earn some extra money by picking up a number of Pyukumuku and tossing them back into the water.
  • Zygarde (Complete Forme) comes with the Critical-Health Healing ability, which is what Zygarde does to itself upon taking this form in battle. It enhances from Zygarde 50% Forme, whose Spirit Battle is against a giant Yoshi followed by eight tiny Yoshis, referencing Zygarde's ability to be disassembled and reassembled.
  • Nihilego is fought on the Omega form of The Great Cave Offensive, whose crystalline environment acts as an analogue to the species' homeworld, Ultra Deep Sea. The floor is poisoned in reference to its poison type. Ironically, while Nihilego is known for altering the minds of its hosts, the spirit grants immunity to screen-flipping, which is an effect often used by spirits of characters that use mind-related powers.
  • Magearna is represented by the similar-in-appearance Metal Peach in her black and yellow dress on Wily Castle Omega form. Two invisible Mega Men who prefer to use their neutral special, Metal Blade, also appear, giving the illusion that Magearna is using the move Gear Grind.

Generation VIII

  • Zacian & Zamazenta are represented by a blue-purple Fox with a Killing Edge (as Zacian) and a red Wolf with a Back Shield who plays defensively (as Zamazenta). The battle is on Omega Form Spear Pillar, another place notable for its Legendary Pokémon.
  • Grookey, Scorbunny, & Sobble are Diddy Kong, Incineroar, and Squirtle respectively. Diddy Kong has Lip's Stick to mimic Grookey's own stick, Incineroar has a Bunny Hood for obvious reasons, and Squirtle focuses on its water attacks. All fighters gain increased attack at higher damage since all three starter's abilities allow them to increase their type damage when low on HP.
  • Corviknight is a Ridley in his Meta Ridley look who favors air attacks and can jump higher. The first time he is defeated, he reappears in a giant form to simulate Dynamaxing. The battle is set in Battlefield-form Gaur Plain, which resembles the Wild Area.
  • Morpeko is a Pikachu who favors his electrical attacks, which have increased power, and can turn metal periodically. The only items that appear are food, since Morpeko gets hungry easily and the metal form represents its Hangry form. The battle takes place in the Boxing Ring, which brings to mind the more sports like motif of gym battles.

Generation IX

  • Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly are Ivysaur, red Kirby, and white Squirtle, two of which are already starter Pokémon (evolutions included) while the third has a similar body structure who is also known for his appetite. Kirby frequently uses his dash attack, which turns him into a fireball. The fight takes place in the main courtyard of Delfino Plaza, near the edge of the water, representing either the open plaza of Mesagoza, or the coastal town of Poco Cabo where the starter is obtained. Their spirit grants critical health status, representing their abilities.
  • Koraidon and Miraidon are red Charizard and Meta Ridley. Like Koraidon, red Charizard is a winged draconic Pokémon. Like Miraidon, Meta Ridley is a purple cybernetically enhanced draconic creature from a futuristic setting, with wings made of an artificial glowing membrane. Both of them jump a lot, because the players of Scarlet and Violet ride on Koraidon and Miraidon around the Paldea region, and they have the ability to jump. In addition, both of them are initially equipped with Screw Attacks, and they frequently use their aerial charging Blitz attacks, to resemble their signature moves of Collision Course and Electro Drift. The fight takes place on an electrified Final Destination, to recreate the electric terrain generated by Miraidon's ability, Hadron Engine.
  • Ogerpon is four Incineroars, fought one after another, to represent Ogerpon's four masks. Like her masks, Incineroar's wrestling persona makes it look intimidating, but hides a kinder nature under the surface. The first one fought is a regular Incineroar with a Firebar, evoking Ogerpon's Hearthflame Mask. The second one up is blue Incineroar with a Franklin Badge, evoking Ogerpon's Wellspring Mask and it's heightened special defense upon Terastalizing. Third up is a Metal grey Incineroar, evoking Ogerpon's Cornerstone Mask and it's heightened defense when Terastalized. Last up is green Incineroar with boosted speed, evoking Ogerpon's signature Teal Mask, which grants a speed boost when Terastalized. Having to fight the same opponent four times, as well as the specific order, recreates the multi-phase battle against Ogerpon at the Dreaded Den in the Teal Mask DLC.
  • Terapagos is represented by Squirtle, a fellow blue turtle Pokémon, fought three times. The first Squirtle is completely normal, referencing Terapagos' Normal form. After that, comes a Giant Metal Squirtle, to represent the Terastal form and the shell of Terastal energy it has formed around itself. Then comes a Giant Golden Squirtle to represent the Stellar form. The Golden Squirtle will get a sudden Final Smash and have it's FS Meter charge quickly, allowing it to use Triple Finish frequently. Terapagos' shell has the powers of all types, so a move that is simultaneously Fire-type, Grass-type and Water-type is reflective of it's potential, with the text "It's Super Effective!" popping up regardless of whoever the target is evokes how the Stellar type is super effective over all Terastallized opponents.

Other

  • Detective Pikachu is represented as a Pikachu with a cap. After a brief moment, three more exact replicas of Pikachu appear, and you have to find and KO the one that first showed up, much like a detective yourself.
  • Partner Pikachu is fought in Saffron City, a location in Kanto, in a stamina battle to simulate how Pokémon battles work. It is accompanied by a Mii Brawler meant to represent Chase, the male playable Trainer in Let's Go!.
  • Partner Eevee's spirit ability raises your stats after eating food. That's essentially how the Candy mechanic works in Let's Go. The spirit fight against it is against a Mii Gunner who releases an Eevee from a Poké Ball in Pokémon Stadium, meaning the Mii represents Elaine, the female playable Trainer in Let's Go!, sending Eevee out like in a Pokémon battle.

    Punch-Out!! Spirits
  • All of the fights take place in the WVBA arena and are Stamina battles to simulate the fights from the games proper.
  • Glass Joe's representative, Luigi, does more taunting than actual fighting and takes full launch damage even in a Stamina battle, making it very easy to beat him with one good hit.
  • Von Kaiser is a green-clad Mario in brown overalls that match Von Kaiser's own. Mario prefers side smash attacks and, since his moves are clearly telegraphed, he's still not much more difficult than Glass Joe.
  • Piston Hondo is a giant Mac that favors side smash attacks.
  • Great Tiger is an Incineroar (which is a tiger) who will summon two clones to assist him as his health drops, though only the main one needs to be KOed to win.
  • Bald Bull is a giant Mac with Super Armor who prefers dash attacks, in reference to Bald Bull's signature Bull Charge.
  • Soda Popinski's fight constantly sees Item Tidal Waves of nothing but soda and his representative Spirit powers up after eating.
  • King Hippo is King K. Rool who constantly Counters. Whiffing the counter leaves him exposed, just like the real King Hippo.
  • Mister Sandman is a Donkey Kong with Super Armor who likes to build up power and unleash it all at once. This pulls double duty as Mister Sandman is the regular Final Boss of Punch-Out!! Wii with Donkey Kong himself being the True Final Boss. Furthermore, the ground is slumber-inducing, alluding to the slumber-inducing nature of the mythical Sandman.
  • Giga Mac is a giant Mac with Super Armor who hits like a truck, then hits even harder thanks to innate Attack Boosts as the fight progresses. His Final Smash meter also charges quickly, which of course turns him into the actual Giga Mac.
  • Doc Louis is a Little Mac that gets buffs to his speed, defense, and attack over time. Since Doc is a trainer, it gives the allusion that Doc is training Little Mac during the battle. He even runs the facility to train other spirits in terms of levels.
  • Don Flamenco is a Ken fixated upon Shoryukens. This is referencing how Don Flamenco tends to perform a lot of uppercuts. The background music is Vega's stage theme, referencing another fighting Spaniard.

    R.O.B. Spirits
  • The Stack-Up spirit grants immunity to tripping, referencing how the original game was about R.O.B. placing various discs to keep in place.
  • Gyromite is a bunch of R.O.B.s that constantly utilize their Down-B. The original game, Gyromite, had the R.O.B. peripheral press buttons down by using the aforementioned gyros.

    Sonic the Hedgehog Spirits
Classic series (Sonic 1/2/CD/3 & Knuckles)
  • Dr. Eggman is Roy Koopa, who always wears Cool Shades much like him, with the Clown Copter referencing the Egg Mobile he usually flies around in, as well as the Egg Walker from Sonic Adventure 2. The rest of the fight references his knack for technology, including a periodic Bob-omb rain, increased power from shooting items (also referencing the Egg Walker), and he's accompanied by Metal Sonic (see below).
    • Alternatively, Eggman can be summoned using the cores of Dr. Crygor, a fellow mad scientist, Tamagon, who fires eggs as projectiles, and Chansey, who both looks like and carries around an egg.
  • Tails is a yellow Fox, a fellow... well, fox who also uses various gadgets in battle. Gravity is reduced, referencing Tails' ability to fly, and a Knuckles Assist Trophy will fight alongside him. He also carries an enhanced Ray Gun, a nod to video games like Sonic Battle and Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice where he often carried a blaster. Summoning him requires Andy, another mechanic, and Vulpix, a fox-like Pokémon with multiple tails.
  • Super Sonic is Sonic, but he's golden and gets random final smashes, which turn him into the actual Super Sonic. Being Golden also gives him the appearance and stat boosts that Super Sonic would normally get.
  • Amy is a battle with a pink Inkling that starts the battle with a hammer, her main weapon. She can also swing them for a lot longer than normal as well. "Open Your Heart" also plays as a reference to the first main series title she was playable in.
  • Metal Sonic is represented by the blue hedgehog himself, but (you guessed it) in permanent metal status. He also starts with his own Rocket Belt and Drill Arm that showcase his mobility and standard method of attacking in his home series. The battle is also a timed stamina fight to give the image of a boss fight with him. The Sonic Heroes theme also plays during this battle, referencing his status as the True Final Boss of that game.
  • Knuckles can be summoned via a Gordo (spiked gloves), Muddy Mole (burrowing abilities), and a Grab Type core of any sort (scaling walls).

Knuckles Chaotix

  • Team Chaotix has Espio, Charmy, and Vector represented by a purple Sonic, a goggles-wearing Pichu, and a blue King K. Rool, respectively. They all periodically become invisible, a reference to Espio's rarely-seen camouflage ability.

Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2

  • Chaos is represented by a permanently-metal Inkling (as Inklings can turn into liquid) fought in Fourside who becomes giant after taking enough damage, similar to how Chaos becomes the massive Perfect Chaos and attacked Station Square at the end of its debut game. The metal status could reference Chaos's unflinching nature, or the way that Metal Sonic gained the power to become liquid metal by copying Chaos's powers.
  • Big the Cat is naturally depicted as a giant purple Incineroar. The floor can induce sleep, referencing his lazy, easy-going nature.
  • Gamma is a red R.O.B. that starts with a ray gun and has an increase to its shooting power, referencing the gun that Gamma uses to attack. It's also fought in the Frigate Orpheon to represent Eggman's base in the Mystic Ruins where Gamma is first activated. It's also a stamina battle as a reference to both his fellow E-Series robots and the mech fights between Tails and Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2.
  • The Chao spirit is represented by a team of Squirtles who get stronger when they eat food, just as Chao in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 get stronger when you feed them. It can be enhanced into a Hero Chao.
  • Shadow is represented by a light blue Sonic with larger rings around his gloves, and favors grabbing Clock items to slow you down as a nod to his Chaos Control. Shadow himself also appears at the start as an assist trophy, and the stage (New Pork City) is a reference to Westopolis, the first stage in his spinoff game. He can also be enhanced into Super Shadow.
  • Rouge is a green Fox fought in Fourside, referencing the city levels in that game. She also has increased power in her leg strikes since she's a Kick Chick, she has increased jumping power to reference her flight, and as a nod to the Rouge Heal (or possibly just a reference to vampire bats), her melee attacks heal when they hit. The Sonic Heroes theme also hints at her status as team leader in that game, having recruited Shadow and E-123 Omega in Team Dark's campaign.

Sonic Advance series

  • Cream & Cheese are an Isabelle and Squirtle combo, and much like Tails, the fight is under low gravity to show off their flight powers.

Sonic Heroes

  • Omega is much like Gamma, except giant as a nod to his larger build compared to the previous E-Series robots, and starting the battle with a Drill to reference his Level 3 Omega Arm. Several shooting and explosive items also appear on the battlefield, fitting for a Walking Armory like Omega.

Sonic Rush

  • Blaze is a battle with a Female Robin that starts the battle with a Fire Flower and with her fire and explosive attacks powered up, which all reference her mastery of fire. The stage hazard is also lava, further referencing her immunity to fire.

Sonic Riders series

  • Jet can be summoned via the cores of Pidgey (Pidgey's final evolution, Pidgeot, is a giant hawk) and Akari Hayami (as a reference to his Extreme Gear).

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

  • Silver is a Sonic that starts with a black hole and likes to use items a lot. Both characters are hedgehogs, while the black hole references his psychokinesis, and his preference for items is how he attacks in his game of origin. In addition, Silver's spirit boosts one's throwing ability, referencing his telekinesis and his playstyle of having to mentally throw around objects and foes alike.

Sonic Unleashed

  • Sonic the Werehog needs to be summoned with a Togedemaru core (hedgehog) and a Werewolf core (...duh). It gives you extra attack power when equipped, much like Sonic had boosted strength when in this form. His spirit fight is against Wolf in the perpetually nighttime stage Luigi's Mansion, which also ends up being a reference to the Night of the Werehog animation, which took place in a haunted mansion.

Sonic Forces

  • Infinite has you fighting a permanently-metal Sonic who can periodically flip the screen, a reference to the gravity-altering powers Infinite briefly displays during the Capital City stage. The fight takes place on Big Blue, reflecting the first and third boss fights against him in which Sonic is constantly running along a straight path.

    Splatoon Spirits
Splatoon
  • The Inkling Squid can be summoned with the cores of fellow squid Blooper, and Huey, who is a living paint can from a game revolved around colored paint.
  • The battle with the Octolings pits you against a bunch of pink Inklings, which is basically what the enemy Octolings in the Splatoon games' single-player campaigns are. The fight takes place in Midgar, a futuristic but derelict town similar to the domes that all Octarians live in.
  • The Great Zapfish is a giant Pikachu on an entirely electrified Omega Prism Tower. Not only is Prism Tower an electricity-themed location in its own game, but it somewhat resembles Inkopolis Tower where the Great Zapfish rests. Most fights in the power plant are against lightning-themed opponents on electrified stages (luckily, you get the electricity-nullifying Dr. Light right at the entrance), but the Zapfish in particular powers the entire place like it does in Splatoon.
  • The regular Zapfish spirit is obtained right after fighting the Great Zapfish. Its fight in the Spirit Board is also similar to the Great Zapfish, in an electrified Battlefield Prism Tower against a team of Pichus.
  • Captain Cuttlefish has you pitted against a Mii using the Skull Kid outfit and Vince's wig, being the closest thing to looking like him.
  • Crusty Sean is a fight against a yellow Inkling in Saffron City, representing Inkopolis Plaza. As a seller of fine footwear, both combatants' speed occasionally increases during the battle.
  • The Octoling Girl and Octoling Boy spirit pits you against a pink female Inkling and an indigo male Inkling, referencing the magenta and purple ink colors used by Agent 8 in Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. Notably, the Octolings depicted in this spirit are both wearing Agent 8's outfit.
  • Sheldon the arms dealer is represented by a team of Inklings who have increased ranged attack strength, and take advantage of it with the numerous ranged weapons that appear as items. As a shopkeeper, he specialises in spirits that are weapon-based.
  • Annie is represented by Peach, who uses Toad for a few of her moves, a reference to Moe, the clown fish that lives in her hair.
  • Judd can be summoned by gathering up both the cores of Judge and Meowth, as well as a Neutral Type and Support core. This is because Judd is a cat who is the one in charge of declaring which team wins a match, and is neutral to both sides.
  • Summoning Callie and Marie, the Squid Sisters, requires the cores of a Blooper (a squid), Meloetta in her Arie forme (a Pokémon known for her singing) and the Ouendan Cheerleaders (who specialize in cheering for players). Their spirit battle has you fight against four Inklings while they show up as an assist thropy. The track that plays during the battle is "Ink Me Up", one of the most famous songs made by the Squid Sisters.
  • DJ Octavio is pretty straightforward: to get him, you need to summon him with the cores of an Octoling and an Octorok, both of whom are octopi, as well as Mooks. He can also be upgraded into his Mecha, the Octobot King. When equipped, the Octobot King turns the character metal, which is self-explanatory.

Splatoon 2

  • Bisk is represented as a Pac-Man who prefers enhanced kick attacks. Both characters are yellow, and the kick power references how he runs a shoe store. The enemy also gets a boost to movement speed after a while because his shoes are so light. His effect when equipped increases foot attack power.
  • Li'l Judd is a tiny Mr. Game & Watch who spams Judge. He's accompanied by two Inklings, representing two teams in a Turf War.
  • Pearl & Marina give a Undamaged Stats Up, which can be seen as a rather literal take on their catchphrase "Don't get cooked, stay off the hook!". When fought as Spirits, they are represented by a light-skinned (Pearl) and dark-skinned (Marina) female Inkling duo, with their Splatoon 1 counterparts, the Squid Sisters, appearing as Assist Trophies.

Splatoon 3

  • Deep Cut is a battle against two Inklings wearing the colors of Fyre and Shiver. They are joined by a Kyogre in place of Big Man. Their predecessors, the Squid Sisters, will frequently show up as an assist trophy.

    Star Fox Spirits
Star Fox
  • Peppy Hare is represented by a King Dedede with the Bunny Hood and with Falco and Fox backing him up, which represents his status as Team Star Fox's mentor.
  • Slippy Toadnote  is a green Greninja who is constantly running away while Fox does most of the fighting (but only Greninja needs to be beaten to win). The match is also timed. That's right, you are reenacting "Fox, get this guy off me!" — except this time, YOU are "this guy". Alternatively, Slippy can be summoned with the cores of Lin (a mechanic) and Winky (a frog). In World of Light, he can fix and pilot the broken Great Fox to traverse the space area.
  • Summoning Andross in his polygonal form from the first game requires a Porygon and the Commander from X (a Japan-only Game Boy space combat sim that used Vector Graphics), two other polygonal beings.
  • Another amusing summon would be General Pepper, who requires Colonel Campbell (another ranked military commander) and a Labrador from Nintendogs.

64

  • James McCloud is, naturally, a fight against his son Fox, but given huge boosts to his attack, defense and speed when sufficiently damaged, to underline just how big the legend around him being an ace pilot is.
  • ROB 64 is naturally represented by R.O.B. and is a stamina battle. Other Star Fox characters may join him as allies, but only R.O.B. needs to be taken out to win, which may reference how an enemy reaching the Great Fox (and ROB) was a Game Over condition in Star Fox Command. In World of Light, he can fix and pilot the broken Great Fox to traverse the space area.
  • The Wolfen is none other than Wolf, with a quick charging Final Smash since his involves assaulting the opponent along with his team in their Wolfens, In World of Light, the spirit battle serves as the penultimate battle before facing Galeem, referencing the penultimate battle against Wolf in the Star Fox series where Wolf serves as the penultimate boss before facing off against Andross.
  • Leon Powalski is a Yoshi, both being reptiles with long tongues, with a Wolf ally due to being in the same team. The player has a Falco ally, referencing their shared rivalry, and the player loses if Falco is KO'd, since Leon would constantly go after Falco in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault.
  • Pigma Dengar is a fight against Wario, a similarly pig-like character, assisted by Wolf. He spends the whole fight running away, befitting a cowardly member of Star Wolf, and his speed gets even higher when he's damaged.
  • Andrew Oikonny is a fight against Diddy Kong, another agile simian, who gets boosted attack power at high damage.
  • With the removal of the Landmaster as the Final Smash for team Star Fox, it returns as a spirit in the form of a giant R.O.B. with a powerful neutral special. When equipped, the player starts the battle with a Super Scope equipped, representing the Landmaster's main cannon.
  • Andross is a fight against Ganondorf, resembling his powerful ape-like appearance, with the Andross assist trophy in constant play. He promotes into his true form, the oversized brain and eyes in 64's climactic battle.

Adventures

  • Tricky is naturally represented by another fellow dinosaur: a yellow Yoshi, the earthquake effect references his ground-stomping attacks.
  • Krystal is a gray Fox, her love interest, accompanied by a blue Falco, another one of her teammates. Her Assist Trophy also appears.

Assault

  • Panther Caroso is a fight against a black-colored Wolf with higher speed, befitting a feline.
  • The Aparoid is a fight against a metallic Ridley, being cybernetic insectoids, and gravity is increased for the player while the enemy has better jump power, since Assault was largely a landlocked game.

Other

  • The Gyrowing is a battle against Fox equipped with a Rocket Belt, and unlike the other Star Fox fights, it occurs on the Pilotwings stage, since the Gyrowing is largely intended for aerial reconnaissance rather than combat.
  • Dash Bowman is another fight against Diddy Kong, except this time he's assisted by Fox, who he's a big fan of. Being a member of the Cornerian Air Force, his stage is Corneria's Battlefield form.

    Street Fighter Spirits
General
  • Most of the Street Fighter Spirits have one thing in common: they are all set in Omega stages in Stamina Mode with a decrease in jump power, which is accurate to how Street Fighter fights usually take place.
  • In World of Light, most of the Street Fighter Spirits are found on a map of Earth, with the player's character riding an airplane and flying to each enemy's country of origin. The whole setup brings Street Fighter II to mind, which did the same thing between matches.

Street Fighter II

  • E. Honda's spirit is summoned using the cores of Sumo Brothers (since he's also a sumo wrestler) and Piston Hondo (as both are explicitly from Japan, and the latter's name was "Piston Honda" in the NES games).
  • Blanka has you fight a green-palette Donkey Kong who starts off with a Screw Attack, referencing Blanka's own electricity powers and mid-air roll attacks. The stage, Jungle Japes, references Blanka's home stage, Brazil.
  • Zangief is a shiny Incineroar fought in the Boxing Ring, which is fitting considering they're both wrestlers. Also, Incineroar's neutral Special is basically Zangief's Spinning Lariat. As a Dojo Master, he teaches the Overthrow Style.
  • Likewise, Chun-Li is a Zero Suit Samus who favors kicks. She starts out as her Street Fighter Alpha incarnation, but can be enhanced into her Street Fighter II variant, which increases physical attacks.
  • Guile is a Captain Falcon that favors its strengthened kick attacks, which is his fighting style. Guile himself also shows up in the stage as an assist trophy. You also fight him on the Omega form of the Pilotwings stage, which is the closest you'll get to an Air Force base. Guile can also be summoned with the cores of the Arwing (an airplane) and Nash, his best friend.
  • To summon Dhalsim, you need the cores of Fire Man (a fellow Capcom spirit, referencing Dhalsim's primary form of attack) and Great Tiger (who, like Dhalsim himself, is Indian).
  • Cammy is a green Sheik, another acrobatic blond-haired fighter, fought on Bridge of Eldin, which is very similar to Cammy's stage.
  • T. Hawk is a blue Incineroar, since his up special somewhat resembles T. Hawk's Condor Spire move. His grabs are also increased in power, since T. Hawk is a grappler.
  • Fei Long is fought as a Lucario, whose aura-based attacks are the closest thing to Fei Long's fiery kung fu.
  • Balrog is obviously represented by Little Mac, a fellow boxer, but he's been made bigger and focuses on staying grounded and using his neutral special, emulating Balrog's trademark charged punches. You also fight him on the Omega form of Fourside, which greatly resembles Las Vegas.
  • Vega is represented as Meta Knight, as both wear masks, use bladed weapons, and are Dashing Hispanics. He also has a tendency to jump around a lot, referencing Vega's acrobatic fighting style.
  • Sagat's fight brings him back to his Street Fighter roots as an SNK Boss, being a combo-happy Ryu with massive amounts of Super Armor. During the fight, Ryu only uses three of his special moves: Hadouken and Shakunetsu Hadouken, representing Sagat's High and Low Tiger Shots, and Shoryuken, representing his Tiger Uppercut.
  • M. Bison is represented by a Ganondorf, as both are muscular villains who use powerful darkness-based attacks. As the fight continues, M. Bison will grow stronger, as a subtle reference to how he's often a Sequential Boss. His ability to reflect projectiles is a nod to his Psycho Reflect V-Skill from Street Fighter V, and Ganondorf's Final Smash is similar to Bison's signature Psycho Crusher attack. In order to summon him, you need Balrog, Vega, and Sagat's cores, all of whom were his underlings in Shadaloo in Street Fighter II. M. Bison's Spirit enhances PSI attacks when equipped, as his signature Psycho Power is the SF-verse equivalent to Psychic Powersnote .
  • Akuma is a Ryu with upgraded specials while you have lowered defense. This makes sense, as Akuma is a master of the same style Ryu uses and is much, much stronger. Where he's located in World of Light pulls triple duty, as he's found in a seemingly random location in the Dark Realm, referencing his affinity for the Satsui No Hadou (often called the "Dark Hadou"), his nature as a wanderer looking for worthy opponents (he just so happens to be blocking off access to Ken), and his tendency to appear as an Optional/True Final Boss (he is an optional spirit who can only be fought after defeating Galeem). He's also got the highest attack stat out of any spirit in the game to reference him being one of the first cases of an SNK Boss; however, he lacks any auxiliary effects nor can he equip other Spirits to help him, possibly nodding to how he is much weaker when controlled by a player or referencing him being a Glass Cannon.

Street Fighter Alpha

  • Charlie Nash is represented by Captain Falcon, similarly to Guile, as they both use the same fighting style — Guile's new remix even plays in the background for this fight. He also starts the match with Death's Scythe, referencing Nash being Killed Off for Real twice in his home series. The Halberd is likely a reference to Nash's profession in the US Air Force; airships are a common element in two of his three Alpha-era stages.
  • Dan Hibiki loves to taunt, referencing the number of taunt options he has. Also, in reference to his Joke Character status, his stats go up to 2003 at Level 99 and his "skill" automatically gives you 30% damage with no benefit. Given that he's one of Ryu and Ken's Moveset Clones, it's fitting that the latter is the fighter that represents him.
  • Cody Travers is represented by Richter at New Donk City Hall (a stand-in for Final Fight's Metro City), who gets increased damage from attacking with battering weapons such as the Home-Run Bat and the Ore Club, referencing Cody's tendency to use improvised weapons like steel pipes. When you equip him, he improves your throws.
  • Sakura Kasugano is represented by her idol, Ryu, whose Hadokens are stronger (and he is more likely to throw a Shakunetsu Hadoken).
  • Karin Kanzuki is represented by a Lucario; her personal fighting style having many similar movements to Lucario's own.
  • Evil Ryu is of course, Ryu with a black gi. He has increased attack power and can suddenly gain a Final Smash as Evil Ryu is a more powerful version of Ryu. The AI prefers to use his Shin Shoryuken as in the story, it was the move he uses to scar Sagat during their match.

Street Fighter IV

    Super Mario Spirits
Mario Bros.
  • The Freezie is represented by the Ice Climbers, who start the battle with a Freezie in hand and also have an ice-based special attack that resembles the Freezie.
  • Sidesteppers are represented by three waves of identically-colored Mr. Game and Watches who can damage you by dashing, with each wave faster than the last.

Super Mario Bros. series

  • Lakitu puts you up against Iggy Koopa, representing the Lakitu itself, and several small, red Bowsers, representing the Spinies it throws.
  • Bullet Bill has you fight four black Captain Falcons, who always go for the Bullet Bill items that are generously provided.
  • King Bob-omb's fight pits you against a large, black Kirby while copious amounts of Bob-ombs are provided.
  • Wiggler is a yellow Yoshi who gains a boost in attack power at 60% damage, just like how Wiggler Turns Red and gets more aggressive after Mario or Luigi stomps on it. The stage also generates plenty of Lip's Sticks, so flowers can be easily placed on Yoshi's head to further emulate Wiggler's trademark appearance.
  • Chargin' Chuck is represented by a group of Warios who like to do their dash attack, which in this game is Wario's signature Shoulder Bash, on Battlefield-form Super Mario Maker, which is locked in the style of their debut game, Super Mario World. The fact that there's four of them may also reference the "Splittin' Chuck", a Chargin' Chuck variant that can summon two extra Chucks.
  • Wart is a fight against King K. Rool on the Magicant stage with a sleep floor implemented, representing Subcon being the land of dreams. And as a reference to his boss fight in particular, Peach is included with her Turnip attacks, representing the Dream Machine that spawned vegetables to feed to him.
  • Bloopers appear as a trio of tiny Inkling boys that do nothing but jump up and down in a stage with reduced gravity, giving them the same floaty movements they usually have in Super Mario Bros..
  • Goomba is a bunch of tiny red Donkey Kongs.
  • Toadette (appearing here as her Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker incarnation) is represented by a pink female Villager with a Mii Brawler in a Toad Costume as her partner. As both characters are treasure hunters, they will go after items at every opportunity. As a Master Spirit, she manages explorations of the Ruins and usually finds Spirit Points.
  • Koopa Troopa is a Squirtle that favors using Koopa shells, and gets an increase in defense after a while.
  • The Super Star is a gold Rosalina, due to her and Luma being the closest in the playable cast to a star. She becomes invincible periodically to reference the Star's power-up effect. Rosalina's Final Smash meter fills quickly, with the move in question being her summoning a Grand Star. The stage and music reference Super Mario 64, with Stars having a major role in that game as the game's main collectible. Additionally, numerous Super Stars appear.
  • Shy Guys are represented by a trio of Red Miis in Shy Guy costumes that favor throwing items and their neutral specials, which are all projectile weapons. Throwing items at enemies (and enemies at other enemies) was a big part of Super Mario Bros. 2's offense.
  • Boo is a grey Kirby that can turn invisible after a while.
  • The Bob-ombs are a bunch of dark blue Kirbys, being spherical and dark like them. They have a strength boost in thrown items, unsurprisingly the only ones spawning being Bob-ombs.
  • Toad is a Mii-Brawler in a Toad Costume that prefers going after Mushrooms that spawn on the stage, which is what Toads normally eat.
  • Plessie is a giant Yoshi with you being unable to swim, a reference to how Plessie gives you rides through the rapids.
  • Toadsworth is a Mario (whose Builder costume resembles Toadsworth's colors) on Peach's Castle where only Super Mushrooms and Poison Mushrooms spawn.
  • The Shine Sprite is Rosalina, who can get random invincibility (to show similarities with the Super Star), and gets random Final Smashes as a nod to the Shine Gate. Multi-colored Kirbys also show up to reference Piantas, and the stage is Delfino Plaza, where the Shine Sprites make their home.
  • Metal Mario is Mario in Metal status, but he also has increased attack and defense as a reference to his appearance in the original Smash. His theme from Melee also plays, and the battle is set on Battlefield-form The Great Cave Offensive, which not only resembles the Meta Crystal stage where Metal Mario is fought in Smash 64, but also references him being fought on Battlefield in Melee.
  • Gold Mario can be summoned through Metal Mario (since gold is a type of metal) as well as a Fire Flower and a Super Star to reference the Golden Flower.
  • Fox Luigi is...Luigi under the effects of the Super Leaf. There's high winds on the stage to reference the item's hovering ability.
  • Peachette uses Peach herself along with Mario, Luigi, and a Yellow Toad Mii Brawler, four of the five playable characters from New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. For effects, everyone is floaty and easy to launch, as the Super Crown gives Toadette floating powers that rival even Peach.
  • Fury Bowser is a giant metal Bowser who can randomly get the curry-filled buff and then his Final Smash (which is Giga Bowser, another giant, more monstrous version of Bowser).
  • Giga Cat Mario is a giant Mii Brawler wearing a cat outfit with Bowser Jr. joining him since in Bowser's Fury, the latter teams up with Mario to save his dad. As Mario is the main playable character, only the Mii Brawler needs to be defeated.
  • Kittens are a group of Kirbys with the Super Leaf power-up with ball items such as the soccer ball spawning. Delfino Plaza is a stand in for Lake Lapcat, another resort-like area. The color of the Kirbys matches the color of each kittens with yellow as a stand in for the calico kitten.
  • Elephant Mario is a giant Mario who mostly use down special in fountain of dreams, references how Elephant Mario can suck up water from geysers and spray them at his enemies.
  • Wonder Flower & Talking Flower are represented by a bunch of tiny Kirbys, the blue Kirby is the Wonder Flower and the other yellow Kirbys who love to taunt are the Talking Flowers who comment in the background. The stage is Mushroom Kingdom U and Skull Kid constantly shows up, and his actions and the stage transitions both reference the Wonder Effects. Additionally, Fire Flower items spawn around the stage. Only the Blue Kirby needs to be defeated, as collecting all the Wonder Flowers is one of the goals of Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Super Mario Land series
  • Tatanga's fight is against Morton Koopa and firearms constantly spawn, referencing the final battle against him in Super Mario Land where Mario boards a fighter plane and engages in a Shoot 'Em Up.

Mario Kart series

  • The Goo-Goo Buggy is represented by Mario and Luigi with a Chain Chomp assist trophy appearing. The Goo-Goo Buggy is Baby Mario's signature vehicle in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and the Chain Chomp is the exclusive item of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi.
  • The Barrel Train is represented by Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong with the ability to deal damage upon collision. This is the only battle against a Mario Kart spirit that isn't on a Mario Kart stage, but rather the Spirit Train, as both it and the Barrel Train are locomotives. The Barrel Train is Diddy Kong's signature vehicle in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, hence why the music for the battle is Double Dash!!'s rendition of Rainbow Road, but Donkey Kong is seen driving a single-driver version of it in a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. The Kongs have increased attack and movement speed since despite it being a vehicle for lightweight drivers in Double Dash!!, it's the heaviest and fastest kart of its weight class.
  • The B Dasher is represented by a team of Wedding Marios, their white suits matching the color of the kart and being the closest thing to Fire Mario in Ultimate. The Marios move quickly and have trouble braking, reflecting how Mario runs faster when the B button is held down in most Mario games. Its spirit effect is to boost one's neutral specials, which are performed by using the B button. It is fought on the Figure-8 Circuit, which originates from Mario Kart DS, as does the B Dasher.
  • The Standard Kart is represented by four green Squirtles with a preference for its shell-scooting side-specials, reflecting how the spirit's art has a Koopa Troopa as the driver and has him using the triple Koopa shell. Just like the B Dasher, this spirit is fought on the Figure-8 Circuit, reflecting its origins in Mario Kart DS
  • The Standard Bike is represented by four sped-up Warios that tend to use their side-specials, which are motorcycles just like the Standard Bike. Additionally, the spirit art portrays the Standard Bike as being driven by Wario's partner in crime, Waluigi.
  • The Cheep Charger is represented by a sped-up Peach, who can summon the spirit art's driver, Toad.
  • The Mach 8 is represented by Luigi on Mario Circuit. Luigi's main artwork in Mario Kart 8 has him driving this vehicle, and they both have poor traction. Mario Circuit represents Mario Kart 8, where this vehicle first appeared, as is also the case for the two Mario Kart spirits below. In addition, everyone is under the effect of high gravity and Luigi can deal damage by running into the player, just like how in the anti-gravity sections of Mario Kart 8, one can speed up their kart by bumping into the competition.
  • The Biddybuggy is represented by a tiny Rosalina & Luma on Mario Circuit, where everyone moves faster, as the Biddybuggy is a lightweight vehicle. Also, Rosalina appears as the car's representative because one of the staff ghosts in Mario Kart 8 used Baby Rosalina in the Biddybuggy on Cloudtop Cruise (the song used for this spirit battle).
  • The Badwagon is represented by Metal Peach on Mario Circuit, referencing the driver on the spirit's picture, Pink Gold Peach.
  • The Master Cycle is summoned by using the cores of three other motorcycle-based spirits, Mach Rider, City Tripper and Excitebike.

Super Mario RPG

  • Geno's fight is a timed battle against Sheik, assisted by a white Kirby representing the similarly stumpy puffball Mallow, along with Mario, Peach, and Bowser. Of these fighters, only 3 are present at a time, referencing the limit of three active party members fighting in SMRPG, though the order of their appearance (Mario, Kirby, and Bowser, followed by Peach when one of those three is defeated, then Sheik when another is taken out) is changed from the original game's order (Mario, Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Peach). Mario spawns with a Koopa Shell in hand, referencing the multiple Koopa Shell weapons from SMRPG, but primarily the NokNok Shell, which shares its green color. Peach has an autoheal effect, referencing her status as the member of the party with the most healing spells. The Sheik puppet fighter spawns in wielding a Super Scope, in reference to Geno's normal attacks all using guns built into his body, and she also has an increased rate of charging her Final Smash meter, which may be a nod to Geno Boost, a spell Geno learns that can boost the stats of him or his allies. The stage and music (Battlefield-form Mario Galaxy and the Rainbow Road Medley, respectively) allude to Geno's home being the similarly astral Star Road. As for the Geno spirit itself, the reason why it has 10,000 power on its own is because Geno Whirl is a One-Hit Kill attack that hits the damage cap (9999 damage) against normal enemies and Exor.
  • Mallow's own Spirit fight has him represented as three white Robins who like to use their neutral special, which is an electric attack in all of its forms, and they also go after the Lightning Bolt items that appear; both of these allude to Mallow's first magic attack in SMRPG, Thunderbolt. The battle is also fought on Magicant, whose cloudy nature represents Mallow's true home of Nimbus Land.

Mario Sports series

  • Tennis Luigi is against Luigi and Daisy who favor smash attacks, set in the Pokémon Stadium, the closest place to a tennis court.
  • Tennis Mario is against a Mario and Peach who favor smash attacks with the Color TV Game 15 assist trophy constantly activating, giving the allusion of a tennis match between the two of them.
  • Waluigi pits you against Luigi, in his purple costume that was inspired by Waluigi. The man himself appears as a hostile Assist Trophy for the fight. The battle is set on Smash 64's rendition of Peach's Castle, which may be a reference to Waluigi's origin game also being a Nintendo 64 title.
  • Kid is a team of Marios in a more monochromatic costume since he debuted in the Gameboy version of Mario Golf. There is heavy wind to represent how in golf, wind can affect the movement of the ball and only Beastballs appear since it is the closest there is to a golf ball.
  • Golf Mario is Mario wearing the red, white, and blue American color scheme he wore in the NES game Golf wielding an Ore Club which can blow gusts of wind. Balls are only spawned during the match and he can gain temporary invincibility, referencing how Mario's Special Shot involves him grabbing a starman.
  • Golf Luigi is a team of Luigis who are faster as Mario Golf: Super Rush has you race to the next hole. All of them are holding Fire Bars and, once again, ball items are the only items that spawn.
  • Golf Peach is Peach who favors her side smash which has a chance of using a golf club with heavy wind appearing to represent the wind speed affecting a game of golf. She is accompanied by Daisy who does the same thing and items from Mario Kart appear. Only Peach being defeated counts as a victory.

Paper Mario series

  • Paper Mario can be summoned using the cores of the Cardboard Box (which technically is paper), Cut Man (who can easily slice paper and could cut a shape out of said box), and a random Neutral Spirit.
  • Paper Bowser is Bowser that eventually gets attack and defense buffs as well as temporary invincibility with Star Rods constantly spawning, referencing the final battle with him in the first Paper Mario game. The fight takes place on the Omega version of Peach's Castle, a nod to both the setting of the first game's final battle and the first game being a Nintendo 64 title. He also uses his neutral special and down special more than usual, referencing two of his attacks from the first Paper Mario, his fire breath and jumping stomp attack.
  • Kammy Koopa is a Bayonetta that starts with a Star Rod, and turns everyone invisible for a short while. Both characters are considered witches, and the Star Rod represents her wand, with the invisibility being casted by her magic. The battle is also fought on the Paper Mario stage.
  • Vivian is represented by a purple Mr. Game and Watch that is constantly invisible, and set on Luigi's Mansion. The invisibility references her field ability, and the mansion is a reference to the Creepy Steeple, the place where she is recruited.
  • The Shadow Queen is a summon-exclusive spirit taking the form she uses while possessing Peach. She is summoned using the cores of Vivian and Gengar — Vivian because the Shadow Queen is the King Mook to the Shadow Sirens, and Gengar because it's the "shadow Pokémon" and she's shadow-based. As to why she appears already possessing Peach instead of her true form? She's already a spirit in her home game, and she possesses Peach upon coming in. Finally, she's an Ace-class instead of a Legend since her powers weren't yet fully restored by the time she was summoned, and she was defeated before she could reach her full power. As to why she's summon-exclusive? Grodus summoned her from her slumber prior to her possessing anyone.
  • Dimentio is represented as a pink Meta Knight and is fought in the Paper Mario stage, but the real danger of the fight is the giant, aggressive purple Luigi referencing Super Dimentio.
  • Huey is a bunch of multi-colored Inklings that like to use their specials. Since Huey is a paint can, he would like to paint over the battlefield, much like the Inklings, and the colors are specifically colors that Huey paints with.
  • Origami Peach is Peach accompanied by a Chain Chomp assist trophy, the latter referencing the Stapler enemy that was used to turn characters into origami. The only items that are spawned are hammers, the weapon of choice Mario uses in the Paper Mario series.
  • Olivia's battle first has you fight against Mario and a tiny Bowser who still has his normal weight, in reference to how he became folded during the events of The Origami King. Once both are defeated, Olivia appears as Pikachu with increased attack and defense when at high damage. The only items that spawn are Bob-ombs, representing Bobby.
  • King Olly is a floaty purple Toon Link with a preference for air attacks, referencing Olly's tendency to float around. He is accompanied by a giant metal Pac-Man with a preference for his bite-based dash attack, who stands in for Stapler. Since he is the Big Bad of the game, you need only beat King Olly to win as that will leave his minions without any directions to follow.

Luigi's Mansion series

  • The Poltergust 5000 is a bunch of Luigis that constantly use their grabs, which utilize the Poltergust 5000's successor, the Poltergust G-00.
  • To summon Professor E. Gadd, you'll need the cores of the Poltergust 5000 and F.L.U.D.D., both being his inventions.

Mario & Luigi series

  • Fawful is represented by Iggy due to their similar glasses and green colouring, with a green R.O.B. protecting him based on the mecha he used during the final battle with him in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
  • Starlow is represented by Pac-Man, a similarly round and yellow character, with Mario and Luigi as allies. They shift sizes during the battle, referencing how they're tiny when inside Bowser's body, but normal-sized when outside of him. In addition, they are fighting in Brinstar, a likely reference to Bowser's body.
  • Broque Monsieur is a Pac-Man that shields a lot. Both characters are yellow, and him shielding is supposed to be how Broque is a block, so he takes little damage. Lots of POW Blocks and Metal Boxes spawn during the fight, referencing his block-collecting hobby.
  • Dreambert is a Luigi fought in Magicant with the floor being sleep-inducing. Dreambert has dream power, to explain the sleeping floor, and the fighter is Luigi because he is able to use Dreambert's powers to cross to the Dream world, which is what Magicant represents.
  • Antasma is represented by Robin fought on Peach's Castle 64 with Slumber Floor active to evoke his power over nightmares. The battle also has food spawn frequently along with Robin prioritising eating it, referencing the 'Antasmunchies' that he summoned to eat and serve as bodyguards.

Super Mario Galaxy series

  • Starship Mario is a giant green Mario (since it is a ship that looks like Mario's face) fought on Mario Galaxy, another planet like it.
  • Lumas are a Yellow, Green, Red, and Blue Kirby in Mario Galaxy with star items constantly spawning. The different colors are the colors Lumas come in, and the items reference how they become stars when they grow up.
  • Hungry Luma is represented by Rosalina with a red Kirby who continually uses his sucking ability. As a support spirit, he increases transformation time with items, referencing that Hungry Lumas transform into different objects.
  • Rock Mario is a metal Jigglypuff that repeatedly uses its rolling attack, exactly how Rock Mario's ability is rolling into objects and enemies. The stage is Mario Galaxy, and the music is Melty Monster Galaxy, which is a level that features Rock Mario.
  • Boo Mario is a gray-colored Mario who is lightweight and occasionally turns invisible. The stage is Dracula's Caslte, which mirrors the Ghostly Galaxy, the first level in Super Mario Galaxy to feature Boo Mario.
  • The Bee Queen is a giant Pikachu (since both are yellow animals) on the Mario Galaxy. The puppet fighter favors going after Beehives, which give the illusion of her ordering her servants to attack you. As a Dojo Master, she teaches the Big-Bee Style.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

  • The battles against the Rabbids are against their Mario-verse counterparts with permanent Bunny Hoods while Arcade Bunny's theme from Nintendo Badge Arcade plays.
    • Rabbid Mario starts the battle with a Ray Gun, just like Mario and his Rabbid counterpart have guns as their special weapons in their game.
    • Rabbid Peach starts out with a Super Scope. She also tends to avoid conflict and heals over time since she is both the tank and Medic in the game.
    • Rabbid Kong foregoes the weaponry and is just a white DK that has increased punch power, much like how he fights in his boss battles.

Super Mario Odyssey

  • Pauline is represented by a Peach (wearing Pauline's color scheme) with Donkey Kong and Mario as allies on the 75m stage. Mario starts the battle with a Hammer, and Peach will try to stay out of the way as much as possible, being the original Damsel in Distress of the Mario games. Movement speed and jump ability are also drastically reduced, forcing the player to move about as efficiently as Jumpman in the original Donkey Kong. Equipping Pauline's spirit causes the user to heal when their shield is hit, similar to how Mario saves Pauline at the end of the original Donkey Kong arcade game and kisses him, causing a heart to appear above them. Hearts are usually associated with health in videogames.
  • Wedding Peach is accompanied by Wedding Mario on New Donk City, with you playing the part of the bouquet as you slowly take damage throughout the fight thanks to a permanent "Flowery" effect. This spirit heals the user once after they have suffered too much damage, similar to how had Mario not crashed the (forced) wedding, Peach would have ended up marrying Bowser.
  • Wedding Bowser is represented with a fight against white Bowser (referencing his tuxedo) with a Peach ally in her white dress, in New Donk City. You automatically lose the battle if Peach is defeated, in other words, Bowser has Peach marry him and you lose.
  • The Odyssey is represented by the Balloon Pokémon itself — a giant, hard-to-launch Jigglypuff in a nurse cap on fellow flying ship, Rainbow Cruise. Jigglypuff will try to stay out of your way and shield itself (balloons can't fight back, after all).
  • Cappy is Mario in his tuxedo, which gives him a hat that looks the most like Cappy, armed with a boomerang that functions similarly to how he used Cappy (minus the capture mechanic). You can also summon Cappy with Ezlo, who is another talking hat, and Boo Mario, a ghost version of Mario.

Mario Party series

  • MC Ballyhoo & Big Top is a Blue Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi. These 4 make up the characters who have been playable in every main installment to date, and the color of Mario's cap references Big Top. Super Stars also show up after a while because it's the host's job to award Power Stars to the players.
  • The Dice Block is Mario in his golf outfit, having red and white all over being the closest to the dice's color scheme, while accompanied by Peach, presumably the player rolling the dice, while various boxes with items appear, referencing how certain spaces in a board can grant you items.
  • The Golden Dash Mushroom is a gold Mii Brawler in a Toad costume, resembling the Mushroom itself, with increased speed, super armor, and occasional uncontrollable speed, referencing the item's ability to grant multiple dashes in a row and the ease to ram on opponents while using it. The only items that spawn are items found in Mario Kart itself, like Lightning Bolts, Koopa Shells, Stars, and Bullet Bills.
  • The River Survival mode is represented by the playable characters of Super Mario Party in its artwork: Rosalina, Yoshi and Bowser, with an orange Kirby as a stand-in for the Goomba, in a timed battle where Bob-ombs rain, referencing the mode's limited time to go through and its various hazards. However, you win when time runs out. Additionally, the stage in which it takes place is Kongo Falls, which closely resembles the setting featured in River Survival.

Princess Peach: Showtime!

  • Peach & Stella are the Princess herself and a tiny yellow Kirby is Stella. There are a wide variety of assist trophies such as Lyn, Chef Kawasaki, and Akira Yuki as stand-ins for the outfits Peach can wear in the game. Specifically, The roles in the box art.
  • Swordfighter Peach is Lucina, another swordfighting princess, in a stamina battle. The battle takes place in Hyrule Castle referencing the castle of thorns, Swordfighter Peach's stage. The Killing Edge and Beam Sword items show up frequently, potentially turning the battle into a proper sword duel.

Other

  • Wanda is a tiny Palutena, due to being a small fairy with a staff, accompanied by Mario, Peach, and Yoshi, the characters she helps to guide in her game. You only have to KO Palutena to win, and the others show up one at a time.
  • Perry the Parasol is Peach in her golden outfit (which makes her golden parasol resemble the yellow of Perry) whose up special (Peach Parasol) is stronger than normal, and she always falls more slowly even when she's not using it, referencing her ability to use Perry to glide.

    Super Smash Bros. Spirits
Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Sandbag takes the form of a white Samus who simply sits on the stage and does nothing. You have 10 seconds to KO her, and when the countdown approaches 0, Home Run Bats spawn in abundant numbers. The entire fight is meant to emulate the format of the previously-absent Home Run Contest game mode (which returned in the 5.0.0 update), which involves dealing as much damage as you can to a Sandbag in 10 seconds before launching it. To get the spirit in the first place so it can show up on the Spirit Board requires you to complete a challenge — specifically to tank 250% damage in a single stocknote  during a match, referencing how much abuse Sandbag itself tanks on a regular basis.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

  • The Fighting Alloy Team is a battle with a Construction Worker Mario, Green Kirby, Blue Zelda, and Red Captain Falcon, matching colors with the Alloy that shares their body type. They are fought on a Battlefield-form Final Destination, which is similar to where they were originally fought. They also have to be taken out 4 times each as a reference to how it was a gauntlet of them.
  • The Primid fight is against a horde of Mr. Game and Watches, a nod to how the Subspace Army was created from Mr. Game and Watch's body, and it takes place on Pokémon Stadium with hazards turned off in reference to the stadium that Brawl's Adventure mode starts in.
  • The Shadow Bug spirit is very similar to the Primid fight in many ways. You face a gang of Mr. Game and Watches in Pokémon Stadium. The key different is that now there is a poisonous cloud over the arena, alluding to the appearance of the Shadow Bug, as well as the ominous purple and red sky that foretold their first appearance at the Midair Stadium.
  • Duon is a stamina battle against giant Ice Climbers aboard the Halberd, where the two-faced robot was fought in Subspace Emissary. To represent Duon's simultaneous melee/range capabilities, Nana wields a powered-up Super Scope, while Popo will use his hammer.note
  • Mites are represented by a team of tiny multicolored Mr. Game and Watches — easy to knock out, but still very annoying when they gang up on you.
  • Tabuu's spirit inhabits a Metal Bayonetta in a Stamina battle, her butterfly wings being the closest to resemble his own. The player will occasionally take sudden damage to represent Tabuu's near-unavoidable Off Waves, and his battle theme is the music playing. It's also a reference to the fact that Bayonetta has also fought a blue cosmic entity that is a god of a realm in one of her games, Aesir - God of Chaos.
  • The Ancient Minister is represented by R.O.B., assisted by other R.O.B.s, all carrying Bombers, fighting on the Halberd stage. The Ancient Minister is the playable R.O.B. in Brawl, and the Bombers evoke the Subspace Bombs, which require two R.O.B.s to activate. The Halberd is a major set-piece of The Subspace Emissary.
  • The Bytans, which are essentially spheres with teeth, are naturally inhabiting a Pac-Man quartet.
  • The Smash Ball's spirit naturally has sudden Final Smash access all throughout it. The player has to run out the clock against one Mii Fighter, which suddenly gets a Final Smash, and so does the player. Another Mii Fighter joins in, they both get Final Smashes, and so does the player again. Repeat the pattern a third time, and the clock runs out deeming the player the winner.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

  • Master Giant is a giant Donkey Kong that can deal a lot of damage to his opponent on an Ω stage. It also rains bombs after a while to reference how chaotic his battle can get (especially when he starts planting mines).
  • Master Beast is a giant Ridley that has the drop attack ability and can summon a Chain Chomp, both of which represent its two main attacks.
  • Master Edges are four Clouds on Final Destination that have increased weapon power and favor specials with their Limit Breaks.
  • As one would expect, Master Core is summoned through the cores of its other forms.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

  • Galeem and Dharkon's spirits are obtained after beating the True Final Boss. Their stats are tremendous, but they have no slots for support spirits. Much like how after their final defeat, all the spirits are freed and there are none left to fight for light or for dark. These spirits also have unique, contrasting abilities. Bane of Darkness and Bane of Light. Their intense mutual hatred lives after their destruction.

    Tekken Spirits
  • Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law are fellow red gi blond fighter Ken as Paul and Fox as Law due to Fox's kicks in a stamina battle. The battle takes place in New Donk City as a stand in for New York since both characters are Americans.
  • Nina Williams is Zero Suit Samus accompanied by two Mii Gunners wearing SWAT outfits as stand in for the Tekken Force since Nina was in charge of it in Tekken 6, who you must beat in order to win.
  • King and Armor King are two Incineroars, a fellow feline themed wrestler in a stamina battle which fittingly takes place in the Boxing Ring. Their attacks will increase after a little while.
  • Ling Xiaoyu is a Mii Brawler wearing Ashley's wig and a gi outfit in a stamina battle at the theme park themed New Pork City, a dream Xiaoyu wishes to have. A Mii Brawler in a cat hood and white bear outfit appears after a little while, representing Panda.
  • Kuma and Panda has you start fighting a Mii Gunner wearing the same thing above as Panda and shortly after, Kuma appears as a Mii Brawler wearing a bear hood and a cat outfit holding a Poké Ball with Goldeen, referencing Kuma's love of salmon. Eventually, they gain uncontrollable speed.
  • Asuka Kazama is a Wii Fit Trainer who shields a lot. In her home series, she is one of the most defensive fighters in the game. The stage is Prism Tower, which could be a dark nod towards the same skyscraper Kazuya threw her off of in the CR Tekken pachinko game (and to add insult to injury, grabs and throws are one of the prime ways to bypass shields). On a lighter note, it could also reference the tower she is seen riding her bike off on in the intro to her debut game, Tekken 5.
  • Of course, a Yoshimitsu battle wouldn't be without the opponent (a Mii Swordfighter wearing a Cyber helmet and a ninja outfit and wielding a Killing Edge) doing something silly such as taunting a lot in a stamina battle. During battle, both opponents will take significant damage and the one with the most health afterwards will have their health recovered, since in Tekken, Yoshimitsu has a few high risk attacks that can take away significant health in exchange of causing even more damage to the opponent if connected.
  • The mass produced Jack-7 is a team of Donkey Kongs who have super armor but are slow who favor their neutral special in a stamina battle, fitting for one of the most well known Mighty Glacier of the series. The battle itself is a reference to Jack-4s storming the Mishima Dojo in the intro of Tekken 5.
  • Jin Kazama has you fight against his father Kazuya in a stamina battle, as Jin started out as Moveset Clone of Kazuya. The first time he is defeated, he returns in full health and focus more on his devil moves as a stand in for Devil Jin, who he can enhanced into.
  • Heihachi Mishima is a stamina battle against a Mii Brawler who either wears a Dragon Helmet and a gi or, if you download his costume, Heihachi's own outfit. While he doesn't have any special abilities aside from gaining a Final Smash when at low health, the CPU does advanced moves that can been seen used by tournament players, fitting for his status as a Badass Normal.

    Wario Spirits
Wario Land series
  • Captain Syrup is a red Bayonetta in the Pirate Ship due to her being a pirate as well, with a giant monochrome Dedede assisting her to represent the genie she summons to attack Wario at the end of the first Wario Land game.
  • Princess Shokora is a Peach accompanied by Wario himself and Mr. Game & Watch, who cameos in her game of origin as one of the many forms that she can take while cursed.
  • The Shake King is a monochrome Dedede found in the Pirate Ship, referencing him being a leader of a pirate gang. Additionally, there are periodic earthquakes derived from the main gimmick of his game.
  • Count Cannoli is a Wario that prefers to go after transformation items. Since Wario has also been a thief in his home game, this is the best person for Cannoli to possess (before Joker's release), and his preference for transformation items is to keep up his disguise. Bizarrely, "Ashley's Song" is playing during this, which, being an "I Am" Song, could be a reference to the fact that Cannoli is really a character in a Show Within a Show.

WarioWare series

  • 9-Volt and 18-Volt are represented by a Villager and green Incineroar (respectively) on the Gamer stage that takes place in 9-Volt's bedroom and they are accompanied by a Sheriff assist trophy, representing one of the many retro games featured in the Volts' microgames as well as being one that was recreated for the original WarioWare as a stand-alone minigame. In addition, the Galaga items are also retro-based as Galaga is a 1981 arcade game.
  • 5-Volt is an Isabelle set in the Gamer stage, which has 5-Volt herself checking to see if you are asleep.
  • Ashley is represented by a Mii Swordfighter in an Ashley costume, with Red being a red Ridley. It's also fought in WarioWare Inc. with the microgames on since she also makes them. The Ashley assist trophy also shows up at the start of the fight.
  • Dr. Crygor is a Dr. Mario with Wario and R.O.B. as a stand-in for Mike, and is set in WarioWare Inc. A lot of mechanical and explosive items also appear since the doctor likes to invent stuff.
  • Young Cricket is a Lucario in Suzaku Castle that favors going after Dumpling food items. Both characters are ninja-like in their fighting, and the castle is supposed to be Cricket's training grounds. He even eats the dumplings to keep up his training.
  • Dribble and Spitz is a Wario and Pikachu combo with Wario favoring his motorcycle special (meant to be the taxi they drive), and having uncontrollable speed since they are always very frantic with their driving.
  • Orbulon is represented by the alien-looking Mewtwo who is accompanied by a Starman assist trophy. Mewtwo can jump higher than normal (possibly because of Orbulon's UFO), and can damage you while falling (likely because of his ship frequently crashing down to Earth).
  • Kat and Ana are a blue and pink Sheik team fought on Suzaku Castle. The Sheiks mirror Kat and Ana's high-flying attacks as assist trophies in Brawl and 3DS/Wii U by jumping around a lot. As a Master Spirit, they teach the Ninja Style.
  • The Fronks are a team of tiny goggles-wearing Pichu to mimic their glasses.
  • Pyoro is a red Yoshi; his red-and-white skin is the same color as the main Pyoro, while he shares the long tongue that is a staple mechanic of Pyoro's games (though not quite as long as Pyoro's). The stage is Balloon Fight (Battlefield), standing in for the retro-style ground squares of Pyoro, and the Yoshi is distracted by the Deku Seeds which spawn frequently, to reflect the beans that Pyoro eats during the game.
  • Summoning Mona requires the cores of the Ouendan Cheerleaders and Ayumi Tachibana, each representing two of Mona's many part-time jobs: cheerleader (Smooth Moves) and amateur sleuth (Game & Wario).
  • To summon Jimmy T, you need Don Flamenco (to reflect Jimmy's passion for dancing), and Kalypso (due to Jimmy's massive afro).

    Wii Fit Spirits
  • In general, the majority of these spirits are various poses the Wii Fit Trainer uses while in combat, and thus the CPUs tend to be groups of them preferring to use the attacks that do the respective pose.
  • The Wii Balance Board (yes, really) looks like a typical Wii Fit Trainer battle on the surface, but as the fight goes on, both fighters move faster and jump higher, as using the Wii Balance Board in real life is meant to help you lose weight. To drive this home even further, the Balance Board's Trainer ability grants the "Lightweight" trait to spirits.
  • The Tree pose's spirit is summoned using the cores of Whispy Woods and Sudowoodo, an actual tree and a Pokémon posing as a tree, respectively.
  • The Warrior pose is summoned using the spirit of Seliph, who grew to be a warrior, and Heracles who is based on the mythological figure.

    Xenoblade Chronicles Spirits

Xenoblade Chronicles 1

  • Melia is a battle against Palutena with increased power in her magic, as well as fighting on a poisonous floor — both being a reference to Melia's playstyle (her Poison Earth spell, specifically), as well as the fight against Disciple Lorithia towards the end of the game.
  • Reyn is a stamina fight against Ryu that has his power increased, and shields a lot, representing his physical strength and tanking prowess. He also likes to taunt a lot because of his Talent Art: Mad Taunt. Also because it's Reyn Time.
  • Dunban is against a Mii Swordfighter in Dunban's costume with a Shulk that starts with a Final Smash, which has Dunban as a part of it. His Spirit's effect is that he boosts the damage of swords, reflecting his skills with a blade, and the recurring gag in his interactions with Shulk where he admonishes Shulk for thinking of using other weapons.
  • Mecha-Fiora is a fight with Female Corrin and an ally Shulk with Riki appearing as an assist trophy, to reference the three-member limit of the active party in Xenoblade.
  • Sharla, being the party's Friendly Sniper, is represented by a yellow Zero Suit Samus who gets a bonus to shooting weapon damage and starts the battle with a Ray Gun.
  • Fiora is a yellow Lucina with Shulk (her lover) as an ally. The stage is set in the Gaur Plains since it is a location close to their home of Colony 9, and your fighter gets a defense decrease as a reference to one of her Arts. Her ability when equipped is Made of Metal, referencing her transformation into a Mechon, although Mecha-Fiora has her own Spirit.
  • Mumkhar is represented by Wolf, as both characters fight with claws. Midway through the battle, Wolf will suddenly become giant and metal, mirroring Mumkhar's transformation into a Mechon (Metal Face, to be exact, who he can also be enhanced into). Metal Face provides the unique Metal And Giant effect... because he's a metal giant.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

  • Elma is represented by Bayonetta in her "Jeanne" colors, which are also Elma's (red clothes with Mystical White Hair). She occasionally gains temporary invincibility to replicate the effects of one of her signature arts, Ghost Factory, which lets her grant the Decoy buff effect to herself and her allies, letting them evade a specific number of enemy attacks before it wears off, and therefor effectively making them invincible for a limited time. In addition to Bayonetta's Guns Akimbo reflecting Elma's Dual Guns weapon sets, the Bayonetta has a Killing Edge to showcase Elma's Dual Blades weapon sets. Bayonetta's Heel Slide attack is also similar to Elma's Sliding Slinger; both have the character slide forward while shooting her guns. The Challenge board for Adventure mode rewards you with an Elma spirit for awakening 50 fighters. Elma leads the Reclaimers Division of BLADE, which is tasked with searching Mira for Lifepods containing humans still in cryogenic sleep. This is quite similar to the player finding and awakening allies in World of Light.
  • Lao is represented by Snake, an equally shady person as him, and starts with a Staff, which is effectively a sniper rifle in the shape of a spear, both of which are Lao's weapons. The stage is also Kongo Jungle, which is a reference to the jungle area of Noctilum where you first get him as an ally.
  • Lin is a fight against Daisy equipped with a Drill (a type of shield she can equip in her game), who is accompanied by a large R.O.B. to represent her expertise with Skells, and Mega Man to represent the fact that all the "humans" in the game are Ridiculously Human Robots. The stage, Shadow Moses Island, is a stand-in for the Skell hangar.
  • Tatsu is represented by a quartet of Jigglypuffs, who are round and cute like the Nopon race is. Riki, the original game's Nopon heropon, appears as an enemy Assist Trophy.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

  • The fight against Nia actually has you fight a Mii Brawler dressed as Nia, but she is accompanied by Incineroar, who references Dromarch, Nia's tiger-like Blade companion.
  • Zeke has you fighting Cloud, as both fight with oversized swords. He will get sudden access to his Final Smash, referencing Zeke's 'Ultimate Lightning Fury Slash' attack. His Blade ally, Pandoria, is referenced through the accompaniment of Bayonetta, since both wear glasses, and the electrified floor, alluding to Pandoria's electric abilities.
  • Mòrag is fellow royal swordfighter Lucina, assisted by a blue Palutena with a Killing Edge to represent her Blade ally Brighid. The floor is also on fire to allude to Brighid's fire abilities.
  • Rex is Shulk with a Fire Bar to represent the Aegis sword, and is accompanied by a red Lucina, meant to be Pyra. The stage is also covered in fire to allude to Pyra's fire abilities. The addition of Pyra and Mythra as Fighters also gave Rex's Spirit an update, with him now being able to be Enhanced into his Master Driver form that he assumes late into his home game. If you also have the DLC, then the lava floor is removed and the fight takes place on the Cloud Sea of Alrest. Argentum's theme plays instead of the battle theme since he was headed there at the start of the game.
  • Pyra's Spirit battle is very much the same as Rex without the Pyra and Mythra DLC, but the battle is instead set on the Halberd, which references the place where she was discovered.
  • Mythra is a Female Corrin wielding a Beam Sword (supposed to be her Aegis sword) with Shulk as a stand-in for Rex. Her Final Smashes are also a lot more powerful because of her status as the Aegis. Her light element is also alluded to in World of Light by being with Galeem's army in The Final Battle and guarding Palutena. Her spirit ability is Critical Hit ↑↑, alluding to her critical hit-based fighting style in her home game. This is the same ability granted by the "Massive Melee Mythra" Aux Core in said game, which also grants Mythra the censored outfit used for the Spirit, but funnily enough that same ability doesn't translate to her later appearance as a playable Smash fighter in the same outfit.
  • Tora is a Jigglypuff (Again: they're both round and cute) that likes to shield, showing how Tora is initially the tank of Rex's party, and Daisy as a stand-in for Poppi, his artificial Blade, both who share Floral Theme Naming. Before the DLC, he used the normal battle theme for Xenoblade 2; if the DLC is used, Tiger Tiger's theme plays since it is an In-Universe video game he has that, in gameplay, is a Mini-Game that the player must utilize in order to obtain the items necessary to upgrade Poppi.
  • Poppi a is a fight against three opponents in succession; each represents a different form Poppi takes throughout the game. They are as follows:
    • The Mii Gunner represents Poppi α, with Dixie Kong's Hat referencing Poppi α's beret, and the Chibi-Robo Outfit referencing Poppi α being a robotic Artificial Blade. The puppet fighter starts off with a Drill, referencing Poppi α's weapon, the Drill Shield.
    • Next is Daisy as Poppi QT, who starts off with a Rocket Belt and the Jeff Assist Trophy in tow, which references Poppi QT's ability to fly with her jet engines, and fire missiles using the Mech Arms.
    • Zero Suit Samus is last, as Poppi's most powerful form, Poppi QTπ. She has a Beam Sword, as Poppi QTπ's weapon is the Variable Saber Laser Blade. Like Poppi QTπ, Zero Suit Samus wears a bodysuit (her black alternate costume in this case), has long hair, is a Ms. Fanservice, and wears Combat Stilettos.
  • Lora is a red Lucina accompanied by a faster Cloud and a Zelda who likes to spam her Farore's Wind, who represent Jin (see below) and Haze, respectively. As their Driver, you only need to defeat her to win. The stage, Jungle Japes, represents the forested Lasaria Region that the Torna ~ The Golden Country storyline begins in.
  • Amalthus pits you against five white Robins who like to either use their tomes or Levin Swords; they represent the number of Indoline loyalists who serve under Amalthus. This culminates in a battle against a giant white Dark Samus with slow super armor and a Critical Health Healing effect, to represent the horrific abomination he turns into near the end of the game, which has incredible defenses, the ability to heal itself, and the inability to move around much.
  • Jin is a battle against Cloud with increased move speed. He is a swordsman known for his incredible speed, so this is a given. The floor is also frozen and he starts with a Freezie to represent his signature ice powers. This is also a stamina battle since Xenoblade 2 is an RPG. Jin and Cloud also happen to have the same character designer and the same voice actor in Japanese.
  • Malos is a battle against a larger than usual black Richter, since Malos is quite a bit taller than Rex, who is equipped with a Beam Sword, standing in for his personal version of the Monado. He is preceded by three giant Meta Ridleys who stand in for the mechanical Artifices he summons in Chapter 10 of his home game, as well as during his appearance in Torna ~ The Golden Country.
  • Pneuma uses the Pneuma-based alt Pyra and Mythra have, since she is the fused form they take when unleashing their full power. A blue-clothed Shulk stands in for Rex once again, since he is Pyra, Mythra, and Pneuma's Driver. It is a stamina battle, as per Xenoblade being an RPG series. When at low health, Pneuma's abilities will trigger; She will turn metal and recover health to simulate her sky-high defense stats and Reality Warper powers that, in terms of her home game's gameplay, allow her to change her elements on the fly to gain an advantage, which in this case is adapting to becoming tougher to KO due to her restored health and increased weight and defense. After a while, she will periodically gain a Sudden Final Smash; activating Pneuma in Xenoblade 2 will automatically grant the use of a high-Level Blade Special on top of the buffs she already grants while active, similar to a Final Smash.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

  • Noah and Mio start off as a battle against a Shulk, another series protagonist continuing the trend of Rex's spirit battles, and a Mii dressed as Nia, another Gormotti. Upon both of their defeats, they are replaced by a giant Dark Samus wielding a beam sword, heavily resembling their Oroborus form.

    Yoshi Spirits

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

  • Bandits are a few Meta Knights that like to grab you, much like how they like to grab Baby Mario in their home game.
  • Burt the Bashful is a giant Pac-Man that is easy to launch, jumps a lot, and damages with its falling, which is how Burt fights in his boss battle.
  • Roger the Potted Ghost is a giant pale Wii Fit Trainer accompanied by two green Meta Knights representing the Shy Guys pushing the pot forward. The Wii Fit Trainer has Super Armor and is very hard to launch, just as Yoshi and the Shy Guys have to struggle to move him around. In order to summon Roger without fighting him, you need a Boo Mario (to trap the spirit) and a Shy Guy (to move him).
  • Raphael the Raven is a giant black King Dedede, another round, cartoony bird, on Mario Galaxy, referencing the fight with Raphael on the moon.
  • Baby Bowser is a stamina fight with a lava floor in which first a small Bowser must be defeated, for then a giant Bowser to appear with super armor, a reference to his battle phases.
  • Baby Mario is a small Mario who frequently shields, in reference to the bubble Baby Mario would find himself in when separated from Yoshi. He's also joined by several Yoshi trying to protect him. The win condition being to just defeat Mario could be in reference to the fact that Yoshi loses when Baby Mario is kidnapped. Baby Mario is also an enhanceable spirit who evolves into his invincible Superstar Mario form.
  • Slugger & Green Glove are represented by Ness and Lucas. Ness comes equipped with the baseball bat.

Yoshi's Story

  • Pak E. Derm is a grey King Dedede who throws Poké Balls that spawn Alolan Exeggutors that act as the signs Pak uses to block Yoshi's progress, as the Alolan Exeggutors are very tall and difficult to bypass without jumping or flying over them.

Yoshi Topsy Turvy

  • The Spirit who loves Surprises is shown as 4 Yoshis, with the screen flipping being his surprise. They are also fought on the Super-Happy Tree, since his missions made you eat apples.

Yoshi's Woolly World

  • Yarn Yoshi is a bunch of Yoshis in their Crafted World look, and are really easy to launch due to being made out of yarn.
  • Yarn Poochy is a bunch of Duck Hunts that like to stay close to the player, and damage with their dashes, an ability Poochy also has. The floor is lava during this fight, a reference to Poochy's immunity to it.
