     B001: Ninomiya Squad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bn_001.png
Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B001->B001 (Current Season)
Ranked #1 amongst all B-Rank units in border. Formerly in A-Rank with the record of undergoing evaluation to be part of the Expedition Force until Hatohara's illegal actions led the squad to be permanently demoted to B-rank.
  • Almighty Janitor: Not that being #1 among B-Rank is anything to sneeze at, but again, they were demoted for reasons that had nothing to do with their actual skill level.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: The Trion forms of the entire squad are dressed in really nice suits.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: They're in the know about Hyuse being a Neighbor by understanding the Kronin surname code. Inukai playfully tricked Tamakoma-2 into revealing the information without them understanding the code. Osamu was later taught about the code by Azuma.

Trigger Equipments

The Captain of the Ninomiya Squad. Ninomiya may not look like a kind person on appearance, but he would show his warmth through small gestures.
  • The Ace: In the B-Rank wars, he's hands down considered one of the people to fear, the hardest after Azuma to take down, and someone you never want to get into a one-on-one against.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: For all of his skill and confidence, he was still willing to beg Izumi to teach him the techniques he didn't know, according to Kitora.
  • Brutal Honesty: His central trait.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Ninomiya decided to let his squad wear classical black men suits as battle uniform, as slight off-black business suits are the standard within the Japanese work environment, and also because he didn't like the "cosplay-feeling" of Border squad uniforms; failing to realize that typical business suits will become the flashy outfit when your team are the only ones who wear them to battle. It's noted that he's somewhat of an pure-head in general.
  • The Comically Serious: Ninomiya is one of Border’s most intimidating combat agents, yet can also be one of the most hilarious precisely because of that image. See Comically Missing the Point, Not So Above It All, and Sugar-and-Ice Personality for more details.
  • The Dreaded: Being The Ace and the Implacable Man with the 3rd most Trion capacity on Border.note  You do not want to run into Ninomiya on the battlefield.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He can be first seen during Osamu's flashback to Rinji's disappearance, but doesn't show up until several chapters later.
  • Emotions vs. Stoicism: Osamu thinks about this regarding Ninomiya: though at a first glance he might seem to be far into the latter category, Osamu suspects that in certain areas, he's actually more emotional than logical and can therefore be baited into making not-so-logical decisions out of pride.
  • Headbutting Heroes:
    • With Kako, who was his former teammate under Azuma Squad. Compared to the relatively friendly way they both treat Miwa, their other ex-teammate, their own is more competitive/exasperated on Ninomiya's end.
    • He evidently has some sort of beef with Tachikawa, yet another fellow 20-year-old, and Tachikawa's reaction suggests it's at least a little mutual.
  • Implacable Man: His way of chasing Yuzuru and Zoe during the match is something to be seen. He just doesn't stop, even blowing up the entire place just to get them.
  • Jerkass: Rude to pretty much everyone, higher ups, B-Rank Agents, children, his own team, and of course the lower ranked units. But this is his current interpretation of what “ maturity” is.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: His critique of Osamu's plan are actually solid and just sending Yuma to a stronger squad would indeed increase his chances to go on an expedition.
  • Not So Above It All: Seems to have taken his time in making snowmen on his match against Azuma and Kageura. It's also revealed that he in fact, politely asked Izumi to teach him moves that he lacked, showing that he isn't as stuck-up as he seems.
    • Border Guide also reveals he gets extremely embarrassed if someone catches him doing cleaning duty on his squad's operation room.
    • Osamu outright states before their final Rank Wars match that he might to be way more emotionally driven than it appears because he seemed to be more affected by Hatohara's disappearance than his teammates.
  • Pet the Dog: A common interpretation of his snowmen at the end of his match is that they represent his team—in which case he made one for Hatohara as well.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: An indirect one, but he is quick to harshly pinpoint all the flaws on both Osamu carefully planned victory and on Kei Tachikawa's commentary of the battle.
  • Rule of Cool: To count, he battles in a suit, fights with his hands on his pockets, uses non-standard shapped Trion bullets, and his communicator is a fricking cellphone. Ninomiya unit sure is stylish.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: In contrast with most agents who enjoy casual clothing while not in their Trion form, Ninomiya always wear classical men’s outfits.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Of a non-expressive, lukewarm type. To simplify, Ninomiya is an overall caring person, albeit socially clumsy to express them, armed with a thick, stoic front. While his “ice” part can be easily read from his outward presentation, his “sugar” side can only be picked up when people are observant.
    • Ninomiya was shown to still consider his M.I.A. member, Hatohara as his teammate by building snowmen. There are five, which matches the number of members in Ninomiya unit before Hatohara disappeared.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Word of God implies Ninomiya used to be this, before Commander Shinoda tossed him into Azuma’s Squad; where Azuma taught him the value of strategy.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While he has a seemingly friendly demeanour, his actual choice of words are sometimes less so, and psychological warfare is his specialty. May explain why Kage hates him. Later confirmed by Toma, who suggests that the vibes he gives out don't match how he's feeling inside.
  • The Charmer: Can be kind to anyone and comes as quite cheerful.
  • Death from Above: Kage finishes him this way during the match.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: See Ninomiya's entry above.
  • Headbutting Heroes: With Kage, whom he's not above provoking. Mostly, he seems to pretend that he's oblivious to the fact that Kage dislikes him.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Though not showcased as much, manuals outted Inukai's Trigger equippment includes the morph blade, Scorpion. Given his confirmed weapon mastery in Asteroid (8422 pts) and Hound (7009 pts) bullets, Inukai is without a doubt a Gunner Master; which leads to the assumption his Scorpion usage is for emergency protection purpose.
  • Manchild: Very playful and gleeful like a kid. He seems to like playing with Kuroe's twintails of all things and she lets him, despite being usually antisocial.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always with a cheerful grin on his face.

  • Cannot Talk to Women: With the exception of Hatohara and Hiyami, he's an awkward mess around women, and acts as if Osamu's ability to hang out with them is an impressive feat explained by years of being trained under an imposing mother.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Konami suggests his "innocence" makes him attractive (... albeit mainly to tease), whereas guys like Inukai are apparently unappealing.
  • The Reliable One: Like Tokieda from Arashiyama Squad, he's not a flashy fighter, but he's an excellent supporter.
  • The Stoic: Very calm and collected.
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: He is terrible with women besides the ones from his squad, to the point where even fighting them is difficult for him.

Aki Hiyami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bn_005.png
B-Rank, Operator
Years in Border Service: 2 years (New Border 3rd Gen.)
Age: 17

  • Cool Big Sis: To Tsuji, whom she defends from Konami's teasing.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Extra info reveals her to be this for Karasuma, to the point where she doesn't even dare to talk to him.
  • Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: Uses this hairstyle.
  • Shrinking Violet: Apparently used to be rather socially anxious, before Hatohara helped her frame it as, "Dealing with other people is so much easier than talking to Karasuma."
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Tsuji describes her as having had a wall up at first, but that she's nice now.

Mirai Hatohara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bn_006.png
B-Rank, Sniper
Age: 18
Primary Mentor: Haruaki Azuma (B006) [Sniper Joint Training]
Primary Disciple: Yuzuru Ema (B003)
Voiced by: Ai Maeda

A former Sniper for the Ninomiya Squad before she apparently defected and left for the Neighborhood. Involved in the stealing of Border Triggers along with Rinji Amatori and two other people.

  • Abnormal Ammo: She tried to pull this using Lead Bullet on Sniper weapons, but lacked the Trion to make it effective.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: As it can be seen on the volume drawings, just like the rest of her team.
  • Badass Pacifist: Couldn't bring herself to shoot people, but she was capable enough to snipe their weapons.
  • Bifauxnen: Not necessarily, but she looks rather androgynous in her unit's uniform.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As she's essentially Chika's counterpart, it shouldn't come as a surprise that her motivation is revealed to be rescuing her brother.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Was able to pull this and thus managed to be useful even while unable to shooting people.
  • Foil: To Chika. Both are motivated to save a brother trapped in the Neighbor World, and both can't shoot people. However, whereas Hatohara is genuinely afraid of harming people, that's only Chika's excuse. The truth is more complicated, and one of the first major hints is that her reaction to accidentally "killing" someone isn't nearly as drastic as Hatohara's was.
  • Heroic BSoD: The first (and only) time she accidentally shot someone, she threw up and slept for a number days following the incident.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She considered herself useless, no matter what she did.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She could snipe the weapons out of their enemies' hands. The guidebook even lists her "Skill"-rating as the highest in all of Border, above even official #1 sniper Touma.
  • Stepford Smiler: According to Ninomiya, at least.
  • Youthful Freckles: As seen on her photo.

     B002: Tamakoma- 2

     B003: Kageura Squad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bk_003.png
Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B002->B003 (Current Season)
A long standing #2 squad amongst all B-Rank units in Border. Kageura Squad originally was a qualified A-Rank squad placing on A06, but was demoted to B-Rank due to their captain violated Border regulations.

Post current B-rank Battle, Kageura Squad is pulled down to B003 from their original B002 numbering due to Tamakoma-2 coming in second place.

  • Almighty Janitor: Like Ninomiya Squad, them being B-Rank (even as #2) isn't necessarily reflective of their actual skill, which got them to A-Rank before. They don't seem particularly concerned about their ranking, however.
  • Foil: To Ninomiya Squad. The Ninomiya Squad is formal and organized with Captain Ninomiya as the clear authority, whereas The Kageura Squad works in a casual Badass Crew style; with their tactics boiling down to, "while having each other’s backs on a general scale, each of us will act however the hell we want."

Masato Kageura

Main: Scorpion |—| Shield |—|
Sub: Scorpion |—| Shield | Bagworm

The Captain of the Kageura Squad. Somewhere between the 4th and 3rd rated Attackers in strength, but officially far lower due to insubordination. Has a Side Effect that lets him feel other people's emotions towards him.
  • Blessed with Suck: His Side Effect lets him feel what other people feel about him. The problem is that other people's emotions feel like barbs against his skin and he can't turn it off, so he is constantly annoyed when around people.
  • Blood Knight: Very much likes to fight.
  • A Father to His Men:
    • At least where Ema is concerned. Kage treats him to meals (or at least tries to), and when people notice in the Kageura vs. Kuruma vs. Mikumo vs. Azuma match that Kage is playing things unusually safe, it's revealed afterwards that he knows Ema has a genuine stake in the Rank Battles, so for Ema's sake, he's doing his best to actually win instead of casual play.
    • Chapter 236 revealed Kageura performed a violent confrontation on Chief Netsuki for Netsuki’s attempt to make a technical turn-down of their team’s wish to become “public promoters” like A05 Arashiyama Squad; leading to Kageura Squad’s rank demotion. Further revelation confirmed Kageura’s actions was all for Ema’s wish to reach out to Ninomiya Squad’s Mirai Hatohara after they heard of her being fired from Border and had exhausted all methods of contact to reach Hatohara since her disappearance.
  • Friendly Rivalry:
    • With Yuma. After their first fight, they have no issue with hanging out just before their next match.
    • He also seems to have this going on with Ko and Arafune, as he's friends with them but also delights in seeing them get their asses kicked.
  • Glass Cannon: His fighting style. Very strong offensively, but sub-par defences for his skill level. His specialty technique Mantis reinforces this, as the use of double Scorpion means he can't use Shield at the same time.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: According to Kou, he might get angry if you look at him too much.
  • Headbutting Heroes: With Inukai, whom he hates. It makes for an awkward time when Kakizaki picks them both for his squad in the Away Mission Test.
  • Hellish Pupils: Has feline-like eyes.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Very rude overall, although Ko states he is a nice guy deep inside. Justified in that his Side Effect can make dealing with people uncomfortable for him.
  • Messy Hair: Recognized for this.
  • Noodle Incident: He once punched Netsuki in the face and thus his squad was demoted.
  • Odd Friendship: For those who don’t understand Kageura’s circumstances, they would be surprised to see Kageura befriending people that are opposite to his Hair-Trigger Temper appearance. Basically, anyone who expresses themselves coherently in both mind and appearance with a pure-hearted, non-threatening attitude will win Kageura’s friendship. Aside from his own teammates, the people who he is friends with are Yūma Kuga (Tamakoma-2), and Kō Murakami (Suzunari-1).
  • Scary Teeth: Sports shark teeth.
  • Spider-Sense: The main reason for Kageura’s Hair-Trigger Temper. Kageura's Side-Effect gives him hyper sensitivity of his surrounding human emotions. The negative and manupulative of one's emotions, the more uncomfortable and irritated Kageura would feel; with killing intents being the most physically painful for him to soak up.
  • Unknown Rival: He hates Inukai. Inukai doesn't care.

Sub: Bagworm |—| Shield |—|

The sniper of the Kageura Unit. Formerly a student to Mirai Hatohara.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Kageura Squad’s affection for Ema for his obedience and skill in combat backfires back to Ema in the Expedition Exam. As his shuffle team Captain Ninomiya confronts Ema of his flaws for being a Spoiled Brat and not taking up responsibility by not “acting his seniority” in looking after their junior teammate Chika where it was clear that Chika seeks Ema for dependence and guidance to grow as a combat Border agent.
  • Badass Adorable: On one hand, Ema’s teammates adopts him as a surrogate little bro. On the other hand, a Child Prodigy part of a top squad known for their aggressive style, and in the Kageura vs. Kuruma vs. Mikumo vs. Azuma match, where he really gets to show his stuff, he ends up being his squad's sole point-getter.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Inukai is about to catch up with Chika—bam! An Ibis attack courtesy of Yuzuru, ultimately allowing Kage to finish Inukai off.
  • Child Prodigy: Only 14 years old and already one of the most skilled snipers of Border.
  • Cold Sniper: While on the battlefield. The text even describes him as "the emotionless barrel".
  • Combat Aestheticist: As with Tōma. Shot a star on the target instead of just shooting bulls-eyes during sniper training.
  • Crush Blush: While talking with Chika.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments.
Ema (after failing to snipe Ninomiya, who's targeting Zoe): "Zoe, good luck running away."
    Zoe: "Huh? Seriously?"
  • Face Death with Dignity: Knowing he can't escape from Ninomiya, he tells Zoe not to bother helping him. When Ninomiya inevitably catches up, he simply insults him and waits for the attack (since as a sniper, there's nothing he can do to defend himself, at this point).
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Chika, whom he actually helps to improve.
  • Friendly Sniper: When off the battlefield. He acts stoic most of the time, but is also unfailingly polite and greatly admires Mirai Hatohara for being a Badass Pacifist. He also has the cutest crush on Chika.
  • It's Personal:
    • Seems to hate Ninomiya, most likely because of what happened with Hatohara.
    • In Kageura Squad's second rank match against Tamakoma-2, Ema makes it clear that he wants to go after them specifically, as Yuma essentially challenged him to try and beat them.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He has no idea that Hatohara went to the Neighbor world and simply believes instead that she was discharged.
  • Nerves of Steel: Remains as calm as ever when Ninomiya is pursuing him. And during his second match against Tamakoma, when Taichi turns off the lights and the others are caught off-guard, Ema doesn't miss the chance to snipe Osamu's arm, using the latter's Raygust as a beacon.
  • Older Than They Look: Somewhat. He's on the smaller side; Natsume admits that she thought he was younger.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: After Ema snipes Kuruma through the floor, Osamu has an Oh, Crap! moment where he realizes that he's next—at which point, as Ema says...
    Ema: "Too late."
  • Puppy Love: One of the younger members of Border, he's in the same year as Chika.
  • The Stoic: A mild version, but he isn't very expressive.
  • Tranquil Fury: Runs on this during matches.

  • Acrofatic: In terms of flesh bodies, he places fairly high on the physical ability chart despite his size. He's more fit than most of the other 18-year-olds.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Called "Zoe" by his teammates. Also refers to himself as such rather than in first person.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just as Hyuse and Yuma are about to kill Kage, Zoe comes bursting through a wall to help him out. Ultimately, it doesn't save either of them, but it prevents Tamakoma-2 from getting the point for Kage's defeat.
  • Big Fun: Round and always happy.
  • Defiant to the End: Played with. Once Ninomiya attacks him, he knows he is done, yet still keeps firing his bombs to help Kageura out.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Knows better than trying to win against Ninomiya.
  • Mundane Solution: To get around Suzunari-1 turning the lights on and off, he simply destroys the lights so that they're all forced to fight in the dark. Inukai praises him for it, noting that kind of cleverness is what he likes about Zoe.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction when he realized, after his sloppy Meteor, that Ninomiya was the closest enemy.
  • Taking You with Me: A method consistent in all of his on-screen matches so far. Though it's subverted in the second case: while it seemed like he was trying to take Yuma down via Meteora, it was actually to create an escape route for Kage.
  • Team Mom: Acts like one for his team, albeit in a more humorous manner. A Running Gag is him expressing pride over them "growing up" (e.g. Kage actually watching the logs for once, Yuzuru developing a crush) with tears in his eyes.
    • Does geniunely take on this role at times, too, trying to cheer Kage up after the Azuma vs Kuruma vs Mikumo vs Kageura match, commenting on his "nice escape", or complimenting Ema for his "sweet ceiling shot".
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Inverted. He used to have an aggressive and battle thirsty personalty like Kageura, but after spending time with Kuruma he changed to the fun person he is today.

  • Book Dumb: Has the worst grades of all B-Rank Operators according to the author comment. But still is one of the best of them in team managing.
  • Cool Big Sis: Supplementary material notes that she wants to be this to her actual brother, to no avail. May or may not explain why she recruited Yuzuru...
  • Cute Little Fangs: Noticeably has them.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: When Tamakoma-2 is suddenly revealed to have a new member (Hyuse) just before the match starts, everyone's reactions are some variation of surprise, confusion, concern, or in Koarai's case, alarm. Nire's response?
  • Genki Girl: Always full of energy.
  • Not a Morning Person: As Chika finds out when Yuzuru takes her to their headquarters while Nire is sleeping.
  • One of the Boys: She's happy to crash the all-male hangout of Kage, Ko, Arafune, Zoe, Toma, Hokari, and Yuma, at least.
  • Trash of the Titans: She is an unclean mess in the squad room.

Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B003->B004 (Current Season)

A B-Rank unit led by Tatsuhito Ikoma.

  • Audience? What Audience?: Thanks to their captain’s “abilities” in Medium Awareness, his teammates are always confused whenever he mumbles odd things “to the air.”
  • Beware the Silly Ones: For all of their quirkiness, they're stably one of the top B-Rank squads.
  • Fun Personified: Easily one of the silliest and most light-hearted units in the series.
  • Too Dumb to Fool: Of sorts. They're an unpredictable squad because they don't quite operate by the same logic as others. Rational squads like Ōji Squad for example, would prey on a team for strategic purpose, whereas Ikoma Squad would target an agent simply out of either revenge, feelings, or miscommunication. Combat Commentators noted this attitude from Ikoma Squad is the reason why Ōji Squad didn't succeed in taking points from Tamakoma-2.

  • Ass-Kicking Pose: Likes to pull these while facing the camera everytime he defeats an enemy.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Ikoma’s strength in combat comes from his unpredictability in actions. But as to what gets him to act is a special type of logic that only he himself understands.
  • Comically Missing the Point: While Osamu and Ōji were discussing strategies with their units for the battle between the three units... Ikoma was discussing about cute girls and the new cafeteria menu.
    • When Kurauchi defeats Minamisawa, making Ikoma Unit the first to lose an agent, Ikoma is concerned, not because they lost an agent, but because they lost their charm of being a four-member unit.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: As shown on his Trigger setting, he seems to rely solely on being an expert using Senkū Kogetsu.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Ikoma has the habit to use his Senkū Kogetsu on reflex without thinking any of the consequences that will follow.
    • Noted on Hyuse’s Border entry exam, Ikoma sliced Hyuse in half within a second into their first solo match out of being so accustomed to just playing like that in battles. Ikoma promptly apologized to Hyuse about it.
    • In the Expedition Exam, Captain Ōji noticed the majority of Border agents are aware that Ikoma applies his same mindless Kogetsu usage reflex onto his very own game simulation player character, which in turn gets Ikoma’s character killed off the game fast with Ikoma not even understanding why he was offed. Prompting Ōji to make their teammates exchange player characters to control in order to force Ikoma to play carefully.
  • Face of a Thug: Which is the reason he doesn't want to attack Chika, since he thinks it'll make him unpopular with girls.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: He's able to detect when others are complimenting him from another scene, and ends up Breaking the Fourth Wall altogether before Tamakoma-2's final rank match, to Mizukami's bafflement. He also reads My Hero Academia, according to a crossover one-shot.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: He can draw Kogetsu in 0.2 seconds, a record for Border.
  • Medium Awareness: Ikoma’s awareness and exploitation of the Fourth Wall to the point of becoming his defined Running Gag has convinced most readers/audience that this might as well be Ikoma’s “Side Effect;” official or not.
    • Be it to make himself appealing to girls, or because he’s just that much of a Cloud Cuckoolander, in-universe, he knows where the cameras are, and manages to stare at the camera during Border competition battles; even when he’s down. Which Osamu and Yuma found terrifyingly weird while they were reviewing Ikoma’s battle records.
    • Often in group shots, he'll be staring straight at the reader/viewer.
  • Perpetual Frowner: His face looks like this, though he seems a rather calm individual.
  • Real Men Cook: Learned how to cook as a way of impressing girls.
  • Shower Scene: He has one during the Expedition Selection Exam arc, in a panel so random that it virtually comes off as a parody of this trope.
  • Sinister Shades: Wears them during battle.
  • Supreme Chef: He picked up cooking to impress girls on Jin's recommendation. Hikari and Obishima's reactions suggest that he did in fact become quite skilled.
  • Sword Beam: An expert in using Senkū.

  • Book Smart: He has been described as not just smart, but "throwing off the bell curve" smart.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Played with. He keeps shouting wrong names for the Triggers he uses to confuse enemies. Having fighting against him for so long, Ouji Unit doesn't fall for the trick, but Yuma does.
  • Chekhov's Skill: His profile mentions that he's a skilled shogi player, which comes in handy during the Expedition Selection Exam where he single-handedly controls all of his squad's units in the simulated battles.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can be rather sardonic. It's no issue with the laidback Ikoma Squad, but in the Expedition Selection exam, it causes him to clash with Teruya, who's less tolerant of his attitude. Kon even warns him that there's a way to tease people and that his way isn't it.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Reacts to most things with the same lack of expression.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: He barely seems amused when Ouji cuts off his head. Justified in that Trion bodies dont necessarily feel any pain.
  • Messy Hair: Mizukami’s recognizable trait blown to afro proportions.
  • Number Two: He acts as this for Ikoma, being more down-to-earth while typically fighting as his support as well.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In dire situations, Mizukami would switch out his Kansai dialect to speak in standard Japanese to grab people’s attention. As to how he calls his shuffle team’s attention to request their participation into simulation battle starting Day 4.
  • Sinister Shades: Has the same kind of shades Ikoma does.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Uses Meteor.

  • Comically Missing the Point: Assumes his Operator warnings about Yuma mean he has to take on him alone.
  • Enemy Mine: Subverted. He tries to get Obishima to team up with him against Yuma, but she doesn't fall for it and immediately takes him out instead.
  • Genki Boy: Very upbeat.
  • Honor Before Reason: During the three-squad gangup on Hyuse, Kai briefly breaks the mold by attacking Obishima instead. When Mizukami points that it's better to focus on Hyuse, Kai replies that he doesn't care for multiple squads teaming up against one guy.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: This is clearly the case with him, as the first warning he gets before the match is to not go alone against Yuma. He ends up leaping into combat against Kashio, despite Maori insisting that he regroup with the others with the rest of Oji Squad approaching, and as such gets eliminated early.
  • Stronger Than They Look: With his Leeroy Jenkins tendencies, it'd be easy to assume he's weak, but he's actually one of the stronger B-Rank Attackers and doesn't fare horribly against Hyuse during the rank match.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He says he couldn't bring himself to shoot Chika because she invokes this in him (and, when asked, says that Akane is the same). Toma suspects it's just him trying to save face over losing to her.
  • Chick Magnet: According to Ikoma, though he denies it.
  • Friendly Sniper: He's one of the more emotive snipers even on the battlefield, and happy to exchange quips with his squad during then.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Word of God labels Oki as one of the good-looking boys in Border. And his Captain Ikoma most likely agrees.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Has cats listed among his likes (as well as his family owning one), and his first on-screen appearance in sniper joint training has him drawn to Izuho's cat.
  • Nice Guy: Friendly and easygoing with everyone he meets, particularly in the Expedition Selection Exam arc, where he meshes easily with his shuffle team and helps keep the mood up.
  • Oh, Crap!: He has this reaction, as one usually does, when he realizes Ninomiya is targeting him. Unfortunately, escaping Ninomiya's composite bullets doesn't save him from Tsuji.
  • Only Sane Man: Easily one of the more down-to-earth members of his team, though he's not above going along with their quirks.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Beautiful!: Invoked for him by Ikoma, who states that people will forgive anything he does because he's handsome.
  • Signature Headgear: A visor cap. It's so iconic for him that Border management even made a Trion edition for him to wear during the Expedition Selection Exam; this is most likely for the convenience to recognize Oki on camera as A-Rank spectating panels judge him.
  • Urban Legend Love Life: While there are numerous rumours swirling (he was walking with a woman with a mask, he was chasing after a girl in red at 300 km an hour, etc.), it's all pure speculation and the others are monitoring him to see if he has a secret girlfriend.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Played with. He declares he is going to harden his own heart to strike down Chika, but doesn't seem to have any real problems doing it. This is probably because it's just a competitive match.

Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B005->B005 (Current Season)

A B-Rank unit led by Kazuaki Ōji.
  • Always Second Best: To “the Yuba Squad with Tadaomi Kanda in it;” as Yuba Squad was originally a B004 and above team. It was only by Kanda’s retirement that allowed Ōji’s squad to surpass Yuba’s squad. Which Ōji lampshades he’s sad his team now will never get any chance to beat the Yuba Squad with Kanda in it.
  • Foil: To Ikoma Squad, whom they debut in the same match with (and are pitted against so often that, in Kurauchi's words, he's sick of fighting them). Whereas Ikoma Squad goes with the flow of the match and end up last team standing but with the fewest kills, Ouji Squad tries to control the match from the start, rack up a lot of kills, but are the first squad to be eliminated.
  • Smart People Play Chess: They're a tactical, composed squad who regularly compete in chess with each other, thanks to Ouji's influence.
  • Superior Successor: Ōji and Kurauchi were former Yuba Squad members who “graduated” to let Ōji form a new squad. At the end of the current B-Rank Battle, they managed to place higher than their ex-teammates, but the truth was they stood in place as Yuba Squad is De-Powered due to the retirement of Tadaomi Kanda.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: While a competent and tactical captain of a top tier squad, Oji's also known for being fairly quirky.
    • In what serves as their Establishing Character Moment, Oji proves his squad to be one of the most tactically oriented teams, thoroughly going over their strategy for the upcoming match... all the while using Oji's bizarre nicknames for people.
    • During the Expedition Selection Exam, he picks his shuffle team based on who seems the most fun and Border's management notes that it's just like Oji to submit both his team's serious answers and their nonsensical ones (none of which appear to hinder the team). It's also why Kashio doesn't mind Mizukami's unconventional leadership for their shuffle team; he's already used to Oji pulling similar stunts.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Always calm and almost always smiling in battle, even while brutally taking out opponents.
  • Meaningful Name: Ōji's surname kanji (王子) mean 'prince' in Japanese, befitting his princely demeanour.
  • The Nicknamer: Uses weird, puny nicknames for every combatant. His teammates also do this.
  • Princely Young Man: Showcased even in his avatar, which shows him with a crown.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Osamu is forced to fight him, he believes he might be able to handle him, as Oji is partially distracted with occupying Chika as well—but he's vastly underestimating the difference in skill between himself and Oji.

  • Playing with Fire: Salamander, which works as a mortar.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: According to his profile, there are rumours that he and Ayatsuji are dating, which they both deny.

Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B006->B006 (Current Season)

A B-Rank unit led by Haruaki Azuma, which is the third official squad formation class Azuma is nurturing.
  • Equipment-Based Progression: Azuma's education formula is to train his students slowly by locking up their Trigger Holder slots, and have them start with beginner sets such as assembling one major assault Trigger, one defense Trigger, and one Utility Trigger for battle. Once Azuma determines his students are ready to move up a notch, Azuma will allow them to unlock one Trigger Holder slot to use. By the time of Hyuse’s debut B-Rank Battle, Koarai and Okudera are allowed to unlock one slot to equip one new additional assault Trigger.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In the Kageura vs. Kuruma vs. Mikumo vs. Azuma match, when it's down to the wire, they accept they have no chance of beating Tamakoma in their current state and therefore choose to retreat, in a rare case of an on-screen match that has a squad vs. squad situation end with one side doing a full bail-out.

Sniper Joint Training: Mirai Hatohara (Ninomiya Squad), Isami Tōma (A02), Tōru Narasaka (A07)

Veteran Border agent since New Border's reformation period, and the first official A-Rank Sniper of Border. Due to his gift in strategy and education, Azuma has been nurturing Border agents since new Border's first batch of agents, and is without a doubt, "The Coolest Veteran Instructor of all Border."
  • The Ace: Has the highest overall stats out of everyone in Border, alongside Reiji.
  • All There in the Manual: Additional material states that he was the first Sniper of Border and the teacher to most of the core agents who are holding up the current Border body.
  • Almighty Janitor:
    • It's fairly obvious that Azuma is in B-Rank simply to be a mentor and not because it's reflective of his actual skill. Due to his actual experience, Azuma is the sole B-Rank agent with the rights to attend A-Rank captain meetings.
  • BFG: Uses the heavy Ibis Sniper Trigger. Not that it helps against the Rabbits.
  • Cold Sniper: While very personable outside of battle, as B003 Kageura points out, Azuma and Yūma Kuga are the only combatants who can completely conceal their emotions to the extent that his Side-Effect doesn’t work.
  • Combat Commentator: Famed of being incredibly good at this.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: It's notoriously hard to kill him in a match. In the current entire B-Rank wars season, he's been taken out only once, and that's because every other squad teamed up to get him.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: He shoots off Zoe's projectiles from far away as they are falling.
  • Infinite Supplies: Downplayed, but the author comments on how Azuma often takes the other agents out for steak... but admits that he really has no idea where Azuma is getting the money for this.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Thanks to Azuma being the grand master for raising successful A-Rank captains, he's the most popular guy to be invited out for food, and the number one agent everyone wants to grab on B-Rank's Expedition Selection Exam; which he was instantly snatched away first-hand by Ninomiya, who was the first person on roster to select team members.
    • As a matter of fact, the majority of agents who’s in or was a squad captain has surveyed Azuma as the agent they “want to take on the expedition force.”
  • Oh, Crap!: As soon as he sees Kitazoe firing, he realizes the battlefield is going to turn into a mess.
  • Secret-Keeper: On the same page as most A-Ranks, Azuma is aware of Hyuse's Neighbor status. To stop the suspense from lower rank agents, since all Border agents respect him, Azuma agreed to put his name out as the reliable source to wash away Hyuse's Neighbor identity rumors from B-Ranks and C-Ranks.
  • Strong and Skilled: He's one of two known Ibis specialists, the other being Chika. Whereas the latter can use it because in her hands it's a Death Ray (which, really, isn't going to be that much easier to dodge just because it's slow), Azuma is able to consistently use it because he can read the battle well enough to gauge when it'll successfully hit.

  • Angst? What Angst?: In-Universe, his horrific near-capture during the second invasion didn't bother him at all afterwards, unlike Okudera who went through a relatively milder experience but became more prudent thanks to it.
  • Bash Brothers: How he fights. He and Okudera aren't that strong on their own, but together, they can fight on par with an A-Rank agent.
  • Birds of a Feather: At school, he hangs out with Satori and Taichi, both excitable and goofy like him.
  • Character Development: He's learned to be less rash and value strategy over pride. Lampshaded humorously after the Combat Commentators of the match praise this, to which Koarai grumbles that it's nice they think he's grown, but he didn't manage to accomplish anything...
  • Combination Attack: Always fights along with Okudera.
  • Idiot Hair: Blonde, on the front of his head.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Uses the Kogetsu.
  • Keet: Always full of energy, in contrast to Okudera being a step away from The Stoic.
  • Last Stand: He's known for preferring to go out in a blaze of glory, rather than tactically withdraw. When he (reluctantly) grows out of it, others take note.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Charging at a Rabit without waiting for Okudera to regroup nearly gets him captured during the invasion.

  • De-power: Yuba Squad was originally a top tier B004 and above team up until the previous B-Rank Battle. • Alter-Ego Acting: Based on how Yuba interacts with people in his Trigger-off hours, Yuba seemed to play an ego switch between Hotblooded and Tall, Dark, and Handsome personas. Yuba presents his Trion Body ego as a passionate man fueled in Japanese delinquent taste in speech and code of honor. But his real-life personality seem, while remaining polite, to be more soft, calm, and studious with his delinquent tone taken out.
  • Captain Smooth and Sergeant Rough: For the Expedition Selection Exam, Captain Kuruma appoints Yuba to be his team's Vice Captain. A-Rank judges labels their team as "Team Carrot and Stick"—Yuba being the stick, of course.
  • Cool Shades: He wears a pair. If his volume profile is to believed, he's invoking the image of them being "cool".
  • Cool Teacher: Like Azuma with Koarai and Okudera, Yuba directly mentors his team’s rookie, Obishima; quizzing and encouraging her to think during battle to help her improve.
  • Honor Before Reason: He's described as someone who always feels obliged to step up to a one-on-one battle, even if it might not be tactically sound.
  • Never Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight: Yuba’s firearms are designed to counter Kogetsu users, since the range of his guns is just outside of most Attacker's Senkū range.
  • Sergeant Rock: While a respected Father to His Men, Yuba's method of training junior agents are fairly stern. With emphasis in requiring students to raise their voices to respond, and be polite to others—“military etiquette style.”
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Lampshaded by Word of God for being part of the prestige Rokueikan High School alumni pack; as "expected from someone with glasses that sharp".
  • Speed Blitz: Sacrificing the average Gunner attack range for powerful damage and speed, Yuba’s trademark combat style is his ability to Quick Draw his firearms to instantly off opponents; especially to high mobility Attackers. To which agents dubbed him as “The Attacker Killer.”

  • Nervous Wreck: He's always sweating and nervous, even when not in immediate danger.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Kuruma comes from a wealthy family, and is nothing but a sweet, humble, generous and forgiving man.

A strong agent who is ranked 4th of all Attackers in Border, despite only being B-Rank. He has a Side Effect in which his brain's ability to organize information during sleep is vastly improved.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite being only B-Rank and not in a top-tier team, he's one of the best in Border. It's widely agreed that his team is holding him back, or that he's at least the one carrying them.
  • Barrier Warrior: One of the few Raygust specialists, with his primary role in the third invasion being to defend the hangar from Gatlin's BFG.
  • Blessed with Suck: How he used to feel about his Side Effect, referring to it as him "stealing other people's efforts." Arafune setting him straight and Kuruma telling him that when it really counts, everyone is grateful for his strength rather than annoyed, seems to have changed this.
  • Combat Commentator: For the Katori vs. Nasu vs. Suwa match.
  • The Dreaded: For B-Rank Agents, at least, because of his Side Effect.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: All the time.
  • Friendly Rivalry:
    • While he doesn't actively help Yuma via teaching him any new tricks or whatnot, he assists him in preparing for his fight against Kageura Squad despite having just lost to Yuma, in what cost his team the match.
    • He also seems to have this going on with Kage and Arafune.
  • Heroic Ambidexterity: Kō is a righty who trained his non-dominant left hand to wield a sword to a skillful degree. But since his left hand is non-dominant, no matter if it's Kogetsu or Raygust, whatever he equipped on his left hand will always be treated as a supporting weapon.
  • Humble Hero: Despite his high Attacker ranking and Side Effect, he never gets cocky against opponents. When Kuruma is assured by Ko crushing Yuma in a series of consecutive fights, Ko notes that doesn't mean Yuma will lose against them in their upcoming rank match.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Not the leader of the squad but easily the strongest member.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Surprisingly, he cries like this.
  • Instant Expert: Murakami's Side Effect allows his brain to process information by multiple folds of the average human learner; usually one quick 10-15 minute nap can help him sort out everything he experienced throughout one day and learn what to improve after one nap.
  • Knightly Sword and Shield: Murakami’s combat style is the usage of Kogetsu as primary offense, paired with the shield sword Raygust as defense. When he needs to go on full attack, he would turn his Raygust into sword mode to go Dual Wielding.
  • Last-Name Basis:
    • Despite him and Arafune being close enough to be on a First-Name Basis, Ko prefers to call him by his last name—because, apparently, he just thinks it's a cool-sounding name.
    • Conversely, Ko himself tends to avert this trope, as he's the only 18-year-old who's often referred to by his first name rather than his last.
  • Lonely at the Top: Not really at the top, but people tend to abandon him because of his overbearing Side Effect which makes him superior in pretty much everything after a while.
  • Nice Guy: On the inexpressive side, but he's generally a fairly polite and respectful guy who was even hesitant to take advantage of Yuma's cluelessness about his Side Effect at first.
    • It actually leads to a minor issue during the Expedition Selection exam, where Hiyami wonders if he (and the rest of the team) might be too nice and accommodating, with her giving Ko discreet pointers on how to be more assertive.
  • Not So Stoic: Breaks into tears when he believes Arafune quit because of his ability. He also has a rather expressive smile/laugh, though it's rarely seen.
  • Odd Friendship: Kō often hangs out with the hot-headed, violent Kageura; and helps explain Kageura's Side-Effect reaction patterns to ignorant colleagues whenever he can.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: To Yuko Kumagai: "I can't afford to be defeated by improvisation."
  • The Quiet One: Not very talkative.
  • Samurai: He gives off this impression, as lampshaded in his volume profile.
  • The Stoic: Always keeps his calm in contrast to his leader.
  • Surpassed the Teacher: Quickly gained more Attacker points than his mentor, Arafune. For the most part, Arafune is happy for him and intends to teach him again once he's mastered being a Sniper.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: His role in the second invasion, where he holds off several Rabits on his own to prevent them from going after anyone else.

  • Bad Luck Charm: Taichi is notoriously known, and officially labeled by Tōma as Border’s “Bomb of Unpredictable Disasters” for creating lifestyle hell in whatever he does, wherever he goes. Adding to his Sniper position, this very trait is what made him to be the guy no one wants on their shuffle team for their Expedition Selection Exam. Period. The only lucks Taichi have in his pocket is having unbelievingly nice and forgiving people as his captains. Though Shuffle Team Captain Kakizaki better say his prayers first, since Captain Kuruma’s tolerance with Taichi is on a whole other level.
    • The full A-Rank judge panel unanimously felt bad for Kakizaki and Operator Nono for being the receiving end to take in the leftover Taichi, since Taichi is auto-listed into their team for neither the chooser nor the chosen to have selection rights.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Taichi’s Undying Loyalty towards Kuruma is boiled down to this; as Kuruma is pretty much one of the only very few captains to see Taichi simply as a bumbling sweetie boy rather than a boy of livelihood chaos.
  • Butt-Monkey: On top of being a Lethal Klutz, humorously bad things tend to happen to him. If Taichi's in the scene, take a closer look at the panels he shows up in—he's often a Funny Background Event.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In their B-Rank Battle against Nasu Squad, when Taichi detects an incoming attack from Nasu, he shoves his captain, Kuruma out of the way at the cost of his own Trigger HP.
  • Lethal Klutz: Taichi accidentally killed Kuruma's tropical fishes when trying to adjust the aquarium's temperature.
  • Tempting Fate: After trying to snipe Nasu. Oh, it's fine, Nasu can't see him in this rainy weather... right? Cue Viper.
  • Walking Disaster Area: Everything Taichi touches either breaks down, or dies. It may be funny to readers, but when you’re an in-universe Border agent, having a member like him right beside you would be either simply “chaotic” at least, or down-right “life-threatening” if you don’t have your Trigger Form turned on.

The Captain of the Arafune Squad.
  • Badass Cape: Notable as he uses Bagworm to hide a Kogetsu during attacks.
  • Cold Sniper: Calm, collected, and good at sniping.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Kage and Ko.
  • Graceful Loser: He admits that he was shocked when Ko quickly surpassed him, but otherwise he doesn't mind, despite rumours that he quit being an Attacker because of this. As Osamu notices, the two of them act too friendly around one another for the rumours to seem credible.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Arafune achieved a high-ranked solo Attacker status prior to his switch into Sniper position. Thus he is able to wield a Kogetsu to defend himself in close combat.
  • Master of All: Arafune’s goal is to achieve the Perfect-All-Rounder status like Tamakoma-1's Reiji Kizaki. Which he grinds himself by mastering his majored combat weapons slowly one-by-one. Once he reached the required master level of 8000 points in solo rank of one position, he would switch to a new position.
    • As of the current B-Rank Battle, Arafune has mastered the Attacker position in Kogetsu major, as well as his current Sniper position with Egret. Arafune has mentioned he plans to move on to Gunner position once he’s ready for the switch.
  • Nerves of Steel: Nearly everyone in the series has these to an extent, but special mention goes to Arafune: most people take a moment to recover from the chaos that results from Chika's "cannon", but despite suffering from severe trion loss already, he immediately takes the opportunity to return fire and snipe her before bailing out.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives an amicable one to Murakami, to take him out of his depression due to Arafune quitting as an Attacker.
  • Rule of Cool: The author jokes that he acts like he's from a Hollywood action film (e.g. flashily jumping out of buildings).
  • Super Drowning Skills: He can't swim. Like, at all.
  • Sword and Gun: Can use a Kogetsu in close combat in addition to being a Sniper.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Is less than thrilled of having to face the Dog Neighbor Soldiers since he is afraid of the real dogs. This however doesn't stop him from chopping one in half with his Kogetsu.

  • The Slacker: Somewhat played with. He is always complaining about having to train or fight, yet the author comments reveal he takes his training and job very seriously and gives his all, so it's mostly a facade.

  • Dub Induced Plothole: Mild case. The localization doesn't retain his anastrophe, making any references to it seem inexplicable.
  • The Gadfly: While Hokari is a decent guy, he’s known for his usage of words in attempt to provoke opponents, but only when he knows his opponents are of a forgiving personality with his teases; such as towards Kitazoe on his weight, and taunt Hisato for a chance to win. In the latter case, Hokari and Hisato are actually good friends, and Word of God notes there was a deleted scene where he later texted an apology, with Hisato responding with a friendly jab.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Taunts Hisato Sasamori when he comes for the kill, noting the fact that they didn't trust him enough to take down Arafune. Hisato doesn't mind.
  • Strange-Syntax Speaker: Speaks in anastrophe more than a few times.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Word of God notes Hokari is cheerful and expressive on phone texts, but not so much on the face; at least Hokari is shown to be expressive on the face towards his close friends and teammates in his pace.

Years in Border Service: 2 years (New Border 3rd Gen.)

A B-Rank unit led by Yōko Katori.

  • Childhood Friends: Despite what their constant arguing might have you think, or alternatively, this explains why, they're one of the few squads who are confirmed to have known each other beforehand: Katori and Somei are conventional Childhood Friends, Miura and Somei are cousins, and Rokuro is a friend of Katori's brother.
  • Love Dodecahedron: One of the more noticable squads made up of gossipy close friends, and relatives of friends who are right on the age of Hormone Addled Teenagers, the relations between teammates and the quality of their teamwork can be summed up as one hot mess.
    • Miura noticably is interested in Katori, who has a crush on Karasuma (Tamakoma-1).
    • Rokuro is interested in Somei, who is a fangirl of Arashiyama (A05).

The Captain of the Katori Squad.
  • The Ace: A deconstruction of sorts. She has a lot of talent, but no capacity to work hard on anything and as such she ends up being awful during teamwork based battles.
  • Berserk Button: Being reminded of Kako not picking her for her teams seems to upset her greatly.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: She's extremely skilled when she tries—but that isn't often, as she's also quick to give up on her efforts.
  • Character Development: Her actions in the final match of the Rank Wars indicate a lot of growing up on her part. She makes use of the Spider Trigger (on Rokuro's advice) to defeat Suwa and Nasu, a flashback to before the match shows her agreeing to follow Rokuro's orders during the battle, and when Rokuro is blaming himself for the team's failure to stay in the top tier, she states that he wasn't the only one to blame.
  • Childhood Friends: With Hana.
  • Fiery Redhead: One of the prominent redheads in the series with the temper to match.
  • Gamer Chick: Implied to be one and trying to move away from it, as she's seen playing them in a flashback of her childhood, and the description of her squad operation room mentions that she deliberately banned TVs/gaming consoles to erase the temptation of video games... but was thwarted by the development of mobile games.
  • Good Parents: In contrast to Hana, Katori comes from a happy, loving family (albeit with a dash of Amazingly Embarrassing Parents on her father's end).
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: A believer of this, going as far as her talent lets her and then dropping the activity alltogether when she cannot do more. It is like that that she became an All-rounder.
  • Hime Cut: Uses this hairstyle.
  • Jerkass: Doesn't have the best personality and it causes trouble within the team.
  • Mood-Swinger: She can easily fall into a funk or throw a tantrum but just as easily spring back from one with the right provocation.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The changes in her attitude and fighting style before and during the final B-Rank match elicit surprise from her opponents, the spectators, and her teammates. Suwa outright ponders if she's making some kind of effort to change.
  • Teeth Clenched Team Work: With Rokuro, as they both seem to get into fights pretty much every time they argue.
  • Tsundere: A mild case towards Hana, in the sense that only Hana gets her dere side. She definitely didn't switch rooms with her brother and get her family to create a window facing Hana's for Hana's sake; she just wanted a new layout, okay?
  • Underestimating Badassery: Underestimates both Yuma and Kakizaki Squad, through her companions aren't that condescending with their new rivals.

  • Classical Anti-Hero:
    • As much as he is a responsible, and vocal lancer to Katori who is willing to confront Katori of her shortcomings, Wakamura is not a confident person; to which can be seen as he undergoes Border’s leadership evaluation as he was selected to lead a squad in the Expedition Exam, and was given the spotlight both in the eyes of the judging panel, along with the story plot.
    • Wakamura was in awe of the agents who were picked alongside him as Expedition Exam captains; regarding them as superstars, while utterly confused as to why he's up on the stage with these type of guys.
  • The Ditherer: Wakamura’s current Fatal Flaw as a Border agent. A Type 6 and 7 Insecure-Too Many Trees Type, while Wakamura is reviewed to have a great sense in team construction, his paralyzing self-doubt of his own tactical skills and indecisiveness to make calls-to-action on crucial timings has greatly affected the performance of his Expedition Exam team. In a fortunate sense, he realized this flaw of his late in the first phase of the Expedition Exam, to which he still has room to improve.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: A large part of why Katori frustrates him, as her attitude inadvertently demeans his own efforts. He's been a Gunner from the start and even received mentoring from Inukai, but his abilities still pale in comparison to what she achieved after only a handful of months.
  • Jerkass to One: Katori brings out the worst in him, but despite his debut largely consisting of him yelling at her, he's shown to be friendly with everyone else.
  • The One Thing I Don't Hate About You: Since stepping into the shoes of a squad captain, Wakamura admits to himself that Katori, even though her character is hard to handle, makes decisions and call-to-actions quickly, even if they aren't always great ones.
  • Teeth Clenched Team Work: With Katori, as they both seem to get into fights pretty much every time they argue.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives this to Katori for being so uninterested in giving her all. She answers by throwing her cellphone at his face.

  • Graceful Loser: Compliments Yuma and Osamu upon being defeated.

  • Boyish Short Hair: Her style.
  • Childhood Friends: With Katori.
  • Fingore: Her nails got ripped during the first invasion while saving Katori from the debris.
  • Morality Pet: She's the only person whom Katori is consistently nice to.
  • Nerves of Steel: As a child, she dug to save Katori from the debris with her hands all cut and her nails ripped off, all of this while knowing her family was dying. She took the most plausible course of action without flinching.
  • Number Two: Although Katori is the captain of the squad, Somei is the one who actually leads and coordinates the squad, as Katori always goes off on a whim and cannot cooperate with her teammates; to which drives Wakamura crazy. Somei is also always breaking up Katori and Wakamura's fights, as they never listen to Miura.
  • The Spock: To Katori.
  • The Stoic: Seems to be rather calm compared to the rest of her unit.

     B012: Suwa Squad

A B-Rank unit led by Kōtarō Suwa.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Suwa and Tsutsumi are agents assigned to Border HQ simulation room control for seasonal C-Rank promotion to B-Rank exams. This job experience of theirs gave them the idea of trapping Aftokrator invader, Enedra into one of the simulation rooms, and set all Border agents within the room on Trion Body God Mode to one, prevent Enedra killing off any agents, and two, to record and analyze Enedra’s Black Trigger data to come up with plans to defeat him.

  • Crazy Enough to Work: His combat plans tend to be along these lines, as they're reckless but manage to work out for him.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The fact that he got turned into a cube first, according to supplementary material.
  • Rule of Cool: The reason he carries a cigar even on his Trion body.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: First agent to get eaten by the new model of neighbor.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Very prone to cursing.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Though Suwa comes across as rough and careless, a good sum of captain-level agents testify his true strength lies in management, and is attentive way more thoroughly than he lets out on appearance. In Oki’s case, Oki admits that he was initially dubious when Sasamori said he was lucky to have Suwa as his provisional captain for the expedition exam, and now has come to agree with that assessment.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Never seen without a cigarette, even in his Trion-body.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Based off Suwa's attitude, you'd think he hates Kazama's guts. However, Word of God revealed the current “21-year-old boys group” are a pack of good friends who hangs out together and supports each other.

  • Character Development: Seems to have developed a calm personality in comparison with before if Hokari is to be believed.
  • Dying Smirk: When Enedora takes him out, as he knows he's served his role by acting as bait.
  • Exact Words: Played for Laughs, and unintentional on his part. On Hyuse’s first day as a Border agent busy accumulating solo battle points to advance into B-Rank, Sasamori boasts to the B-Rank Attackers who were defeated by Hyuse that he'll avenge them and get a win back from the then freshly enlisted C-Rank Hyuse...and he's right. • A Father to His Men: He's rather protective of his younger squadmates, which Tokieda notes is also his flaw: he tries to take on too much responsibility and can be too wary of placing them in danger.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Zaki.
  • Nice Guy: So far he seems to be this to everyone.
  • Only Sane Man: Amongst his same-age friend circle, Kakizaki is the level head with Yuba helping to keep Jin, Arashiyama, and Ikoma in check.
  • Sincerest Form of Flattery: He clearly looks up to Arashiyama, with his squad taking form in a similar format as Arashiyama’s squad.
  • Taking You with Me: Attempts to pull this on Yuma before going down during their match.
  • Team Spirit: His strategies tend to go on this. Kakizaki usually commands his squad to move together during battle.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Kakizaki is a natural conservative who is uncomfortable with the spotlight. • Sadist: Jokingly (perhaps) commented to be this by the author.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Comes from a rich family.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She's not the biggest fan of Mizukami's attitude when she ends up in his provisional squad, even if she does try to meet him halfway.

  • Jerkass: Amongst agents with bad attitudes, Urushima is the one every seasoned agent acknowledged to be the worst of them all; with B010 Sniper Hokari affirming Snipers and Urushima will be the definite leftovers in Expedition Exam shuffle team selection.
  • One-Man Army: His unit is composed just of him and his operator, yet still manages to be middle B-Rank.
  • Only in It for the Money: His very first line of dialog is asking if he'll get a pay increase if he does well on the Expedition Exam. Comments from Mizukami and Ouji imply that this is something he is known for.
  • Stealth Expert: The other main reason for Urushima’s unpopularity for the Expedition Exam is his major in stealth equipments. Like the problems with Snipers, Trappers, and Spotters, the more stealth usage means his Trion will go out faster; and is not the desirable type of agent for marathon-type prolonged battles.
