    Border Headquarters

Masamune Kido

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b01_6.png
Border Headquarters Commander-in-Chief
Years in Border Service: 4½-over 5 years (Border Founder)
Age: 43
Voiced by: Takuya Kirimoto

  • Commanding Coolness: A commander, and always really calm.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The death of over half the older Border team during the defense of an allied Neighbor nation its what turned him into the stern man he is now.
  • Distinguishing Mark: He has a very visible scar on his face. It turns out he probably got it in the defense of an allied nation, the same incident that killed Mogami and over half the members of Old Border.
  • Eyes Are Unbreakable: Despite his scar being dangerously close to his left eye, his eye is completely intact and working.
  • Fantastic Racism: Shūji seems to partially take after him at that.
  • A Father to His Men: It's discreet, but it's there. When the expedition team returns, he states that the most important thing is that they've returned safely, and in light of the reveal about Old Border, it's safe to assume that not losing a good chunk of his subordinates plays a large part in his motivations as a whole, including his more jerk-ish ones.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He seems to have a streak of honesty and honor, as he accepted Replica's deal of protecting Yūma (if he was lying, Yūma would know).
  • Kick the Dog: Refers to Amo as a tool. The rest of the staff is unimpressed with his attitude.
  • Knight Templar: The entire Kido Faction, but it applies mainly to him.
  • Non-Action Guy: While Border's Commander, he doesn't appear to have any combat ability himself, in contrast to Shinoda (BBF doesn't list any stats for him either, further implying this).
  • Pet the Dog: He asks after Osamu's well-being and informs him that Shinoda and Rindo had nothing to do with Netsuki's attempted Frame-Up. It's one of his few acts of kindness with no apparent ulterior motive.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Always on a nice suit.
  • The Stoic: At his worst, he looks sightly pissed off.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Or younger man, rather. He's seen smiling in the Old Border photo, startling Osamu once he realizes who it is.

Masafumi Shinoda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b05_1.png
Commander of the Self-Defense Unit
Years in Border Service: 4½-over 5 years (Border Founder)
Age: 33
Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao

  • Animal Motifs: Tigers.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Is said to be the strongest agent in Border Headquarters using a normal trigger and can boast a lot of fighting experience, seeing that he knows Yūma's father.
  • Badass Longcoat: When in Trigger Mode.
  • Dynamic Entry: When going to battle against Enedora, he skips all the hallways and elevators needed to arrive and just does a wall run to get there.
  • Godzilla Threshold: As he's needed as a commander, he doesn't enter the fray personally unless it's really bad.
  • Master Swordsman: Fought Enedora's Black Trigger while successfully attacking his hidden weak point and effortlessly dodging all of his attacks. He also was Tachikawa's mentor and is still considered to be the strongest agent at HQ (excluding those with a Black Trigger).
  • Not So Above It All: Unsurprising for the mentor of Tachikawa, Shinoda has his moments that you might otherwise not expect from a now commander. The reason Kido nicknamed Shinoda as “The Menacing Brat” since Border’s founding days was by Shinoda’s tendency to be unintentionally destructive, or thinks way far outside of the box. Such as accidentally slicing Kido's car in half while Kogetsu training, leaving through a window and returning through the window of a ''different floor'', and getting into trouble with authorities for publicly practicing with his Trigger gear; causing a spectacle.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Is tolerant of Neighbors with friendly intentions and will not support destructive infighting in the power struggle between the Kido Faction and Tamakoma.
  • There Was a Door: Shinoda’s typical track to reach battle grounds. Running through the hallway, taking elevators, and opening doors are simply hassles.
  • World's Best Warrior: Border HQ's strongest.
  • You Are Already Dead: To Enedora.

Motokichi Kinuta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b02_2.png
Headquarters Development Chief
Years in Border Service: 4-4½ years (Old-to-New Border transition period)
Age: 49
Voiced by: Kōzō Shioya

  • Animal Motifs: Racoons, according to the Extra Material.
  • Friend to All Children: He seems like a jerk, but he has a soft spot for young children because of his daughter.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He's the one responsible for Border's technology.
  • Gonk: Has a rather... Easily recognizable face.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Doesn't take very much to make him snap.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: He acts tough around Hyuse, their prisoner of war, pointing out that they could always torture him if he refuses to speak. Yuma, however, cheekily points out later—as proof of his lie-detecting Side Effect—that Kinuta didn't mean any of it.
  • Jerkass: At the beginning at first. Then we get to know him and he is somewhat decent, if short tempered.
  • Miniature Senior Citizen: Gets smaller in every new appearance.
  • Papa Wolf: He has a bit of this in him towards Chika. Apparently, he was the one who most advocated promoting her to B-Rank so that she could be equipped with bail-out.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: Short as hell, but also the number one academic genius of the series.
  • Trap Master: In charge of setting all the traps against the invaders during the Second Invasion.

Eizo Netsuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b03_07.png
Media Countermeasures Chief
Years in Border Service: 4-4½ years (Old-to-New Border transition period)
Age: 39
Voiced by: Bin Shimada

  • Adults Are Useless: Averted. When (correct) rumours start spreading about who Hyuse really is, Osamu panics and goes to Netsuki to talk about it—only to find that Netsuki's already come up with an entire plan to deal with it, given that this is his job.
  • Frame-Up: Frames Osamu for Aftokrator knowledge of the lack of Bail Out in C-Rank Agents. It doesn't work thanks to Karasawa.
    • It is implied that Border had no intention of giving out Osamu's name or anything but was going to just let the public have a temporary unknown figure to place their anger on.
  • Gag Nose: He has a... Very noticeable nose.
  • Jerkass: Just like Kinuta, and in turn he hasn't gotten any better characterization yet.
    • Subverted when someone points out to him that Osamu one his tricks from the press conference he looks a little sad states that Osamu has learned nothing good from him hinting he did not want to frame him but had no other choice at the time.
  • Nervous Wreck: He has his moments. Frequently. In an emergency, he is shown to be the first one to panic.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Villain is putting it very strongly, but he's technically somewhat of an opposing force to the protagonists. However, it's made clear that he's just trying to do his job, with no real vendetta against Osamu or the like. On the flip side, he's also willing to help Osamu out if it benefits Border, and states that as the one in charge of PR, he'll take responsibility if word gets out that they lied about Hyuse's status.

Katsumi Karasawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b04_7.png
Foreign Affairs and Business Operations Manager
Years in Border Service: 4-4½ years (Old-to-New Border transition period)
Age: 33
Voiced by: Eiji Takemoto

Kyōko Sawamura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b06_2.png
General Manager Counsellor
Years in Border Service: 4 years (New Border 1st Gen.)
Age: 25
Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima

Raizō Terashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b07_3.png
Head Engineer
Age: 21
Voiced by: Souta Arai

  • Gadgeteer Genius: As goes with his position.
  • Hidden Badass: He was a former top-class Kogetsu user, though you wouldn't guess it at first.
  • Morality Chain: Sort of. He's the one who keeps Enedra(dd) cooperative, but mainly because he knows how to appeal to him: by bribing him with movies.
  • Rage Quit: The reason he's no longer an Attacker? Because the rise of popularity in bullet triggers pissed him off, so he became an engineer instead and developed Raygust to counter them.
  • The Stoic: Not very emotive.

Ruka Shinoda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b08_6.png
Aristeran princess
Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Age: 16

  • Happily Adopted: Ruka is adopted under Masafumi Shinoda as his “relative,” while her biological brother, Yōtarō is adopted under The Rindō Family.
  • Noble Fugitive: As with her little brother, Yōtarō. She's the crown princess of the fallen Neighbor country Aristera, who found safe haven with Border.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite scolding Michael for his roughhousing with Yōtarō, she's later seen playing with him in a similar manner in secret.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her introduction is accompanied by a few reveals, especially about the nature of her and Yōtarō's role in Border.

Ryoji Kiriyama

Years in Border Service: 4½-over 5 years (Border Founder)

The last surviving Border founder to be introduced. According to Yuri Rindō, Kiriyama mainly works in Border’s engineering department.

    S-Rank Agents

Tsukihiko Amō

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b09_0.png

S-Rank, All-Rounder
Years in Border Service: 3 years (New Border 2nd Gen.)
Age: 16
Education: Mikado City P.S.1 High School
Trion Side-Effect: Strength Analysis
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga

An S-Rank agent of Border who is operating solo.

Not much is known about him so far, aside from him regularly destroying the area he is fighting in.

  • The Ace: In regards to battle, and thanks to having a Black Trigger.
  • Aura Vision: Amō holds the Side-Effect of strength analysis by visually grading the auras of life-forms by color-codes; often comparing the subject’s strength with Border agent data for communication convenience. Amō doesn’t need to view his subjects in person, as reviewing subjects through surveillance cameras works just as fine for him.
  • Creepy Monotone: He speaks in one.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: His eyes look... off, to say the least.
  • The Dreaded: Even for the higher ups. Its described as inhuman while he fights.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Kido was tempted on using him to retrieve Yuma Black Trigger since both Shinoda and Tamakoma were defending him. The other members of the staff weren't so sure about it.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: So far we've only seen the aftermath of his destructive battles.
  • One-Man Army: In charge of a whole sector during the Afrokrator invitation, with zero difficulties on his part.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He tends to wipe out entire city blocks along with his enemies.

    C-Rank Agents

Izuho Natsume

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c01_02_4.png
C-Rank, Sniper
Years in Border Service: Newly Enlisted (New Border 5th Gen.)
Age: 14
Border Faction: Tamakoma
Education: Mikado City P.S.3 Junior High
Voiced by: Hiromi Konno

A social, yet lukewarm sniper trainee who is a fellow schoolmate of Osamu, Yuma, and Chika. Izuho befriended the trio shortly before the start of The Second Large-Scale Neighbor Invasion, and went through the war with the trio; solidifying her bond with them. Izuho has since started to attend Border’s joint Sniper training sessions seriously to improve her skills, and expand her relations with Chika, A-B rank snipers, and the Tamakoma Branch agents. By these moves, Izuho is slated to join B-rank Nasu Squad replacing Akane Hiura once she pass her B-rank test.

  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Izuho’s family runs a Karate dojo, and is a Karate practitioner herself.
  • Head Pet: The gray cat Izuho has rescued from the invasion chose to stick on her head ever since, leading Izuho to officially adopt it.
  • Idiot Hair: Sprouting from her fringe.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Izuho rescued a gray cat during the invasion-arc, and the cat claims her as it’s owner ever since. Even though Izuho is the official owner of the cat, her cat lives in Border as the organization’s public pet rather than living with her privately.
  • Magnetic Hero: Word of God confirmed Izuho has the natural charm of attracting children and animals, which can be a bit uncomfortable since most of them don’t give her personal space. This is most likely why Izuho proceeded in letting her cat live with Border’s engineering department, because her cat would more than likely stick to her 24/7 if she took it home with her.
  • Secret-Keeper: As an agent in solid allegiance with the Tamakoma faction, Izuho knows about Hyuse being a Neighbor. As to whether she’s in on Yuma originated from the Neighborhood is yet to be confirmed.
  • The Slacker: As her introduction. Izuho initially joined Border solely because agents “looks cool,” and didn’t have the aim to become a “professional.” But after she experienced the battle grounds of the Second Major Neighbor Invasion and befriended Chika, Izuho started to take this Border agent job seriously; albeit not-so-confident about mastering her skills. But as time moves on, people can see great friend circles and positive encouragements from Border upperclassmen are all it takes to get Izuho inspired to improve; and they are paying off.

Kōda Squad (The C-Rank 3 Idiots)

C-Rank Agents
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/new_3_idiots_7.png
From left to right: Hidehide Hinoe, Teruteru Kōda, Fumifumi Saotome.
Years in Border Service: Newly Enlisted (New Border 5th Gen.)
Border Faction: Kido (Kōda & Saotome), Free (Hinoe)

A trio of egotistic C-Rank Border agents who always try showing off.

  • Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: The C-rank idiot trio launches a successful assault on a Bamster, complete with a cool entrance and a flashy name for their combination attack. As soon as it's destroyed a modded Rabbit, a terrifying looking enemy they've never seen before, climbs out of it and fires a powerful beam at them. This prompts their immediate retreat in the opposite direction.
  • Attack Pattern Alpha: They do this, with varying grades of effect.
  • Butt-Monkey: They always get into bad situations.
  • Calling Your Attacks: With Zodiac Formations.
  • Chuunibyou: Literally and figuratively! They're middle schoolers who're Wrong Genre Savvy and act as if they're the protagonists in a different, flashier Shōnen series.
  • Comic Trio: Needless to say.
  • Cool Sword: Two of the members use a Kogetsu each.
  • Homing Projectile: One of the three uses a Hound.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The team were originally NoNameGivens in the manga. For the sake of crediting their voice actors, the anime production team named them Kōda, Saotome, and Hinoe; which Ashihara accepted and used in BBF.
  • Numerical Theme Naming: The surnames of it’s three members have characters aligned by Heavenly Stems; da (甲), Saotome (乙), and Hinoe (丙).
  • Sword and Gun: One of the three uses a Hound and the other 2 use Kogetsu.

    Retired Border Agents

Tadaomi Kanda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/by_04.png
Former Yuba Squad agent, All-Rounder
Age: 18
Education: Rokueikan High School
Voiced by: ???

The former agent for B-rank Yuba Squad who retired for college, slated to major in architecture.

  • Blasé Boast: Packaged as a rare shy variant, Kanda is a Gentle Giant who can’t help to giggle out his Awesome Ego whenever he sees his squad blunder in battle without his direction.
Kanda: “Speaking of (the new) Yuba Squad, man, that (Rank Battle results) sure was unexpected… Now it only enhanced the importance of ‘Tadaomi Kanda.’ Don’t you say, Nono?”
Nono: Can you just not out the words that’s on everyone’s mind, will ya?”
  • Boring, but Practical: Kazuma Satomi describes him as "not very flashy, but good at what he did".
  • Gentle Giant: Though Kanda’s shown sitting for most of his scenes, his stature is noticeably taller than most of his Yuba Squad teammates, on par or over to probably Yuba; whose already one of the few tall stature agents standing at 181cm (5’9).
  • So Proud of You: Kanda generously gave out his “seal of guarantee” to Obishima in assuring she will grow into a strong Border agent in no time.
  • Team Mom: Of Yuba Squad to Team Dad Yuba, and Cool Big Sis Nono. Kanda served as their team’s Vice Captain, tank/damager, and lead strategist. Adding to his Gentle Giant personality, Kanda is respected by all of his team’s juniors, including Obishima; which Kanda warmly approves of her skills when they meet up for his send-off party after B-Rank Battle.

Akane Hiura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bnz_03.png
Former Nasu Squad agent, Sniper
Years in Border Service: 2 years (New Border 3rd Gen.)
Age: 15
Education: Mikado City P.S.2 Junior High
Voiced by: Chihiro Ikki

  • Cuteness Proximity: When meeting Natsume's cat.
  • Friendly Sniper: She's a borderline Genki Girl who easily forms a friendship with Chika and Izuho.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Ties her hair like this.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: While breaking the news to her teammates that she would move out of Mikado City after her school graduation.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Loves kitties.
  • The Moving Experience: Since the Second Major Neighbor Invasion, Akane's parents viewed their daughter's service for Border is too dangerous of a job to continue, therefore, they request Border to release their daughter from service, and planned their entire family to leave Mikado City once Akane graduates middle school. The events took effect since chapter 199, right after the end of Tamakoma-2's debut B-Rank Battle season.
  • Passing the Torch: Akane referred Izuho Natsume to her teammates to take her place as Nasu Squad's sniper before she moves away in chapter 199.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Pink hair in a series with mostly normal hair colours, and a cute and cheerful girl.
  • Self-Induced Allergic Reaction: Is allergic to cats, yet still loves them. This ends up bad for her.
