Rank Advancement:
[B-Rank Battle] B021->B002 (Debut Season)

Formally named as Tamakoma 2nd Squad, this is World Trigger's team of main characters employed under Border’s Tamakoma Branch.

Mikado City P.S.3 Junior High schoolmates and Childhood Friends, Osamu and Chika were introduced to New Transfer Student Yūma in the middle of a semester. Through a series of events, the three shared each other’s hidden secrets, which includes Osamu’s service in Border, Chika’s unreported record-breaking Trion capacity, and Yūma’s “illegal immigrant” status as an individual born from The Neighborhood. To hide Yūma‘s identity from central Border, Osamu reported combat credits made by Yūma as his own. As Border sensed the unusualness from Osamu, Border’s Tamakoma Branch took the first step by transferring Osamu from the central Border system into Tamakoma’s division. Next, in order to protect the statuses of Yūma and Chika from being taken advantaged by central Border, Tamakoma Branch proceeded in enlisting the two as Tamakoma’s Border agents with all three of them forming a new squad with Osamu installed as captain.

By the settlement between Border HQ and Tamakoma, Second Large-Scale Neighbor Invasion Prisoner of War, Hyuse of Neighbor planet Aftokrator was allowed to be placed into Tamakoma-2 as their fourth combat member.

To honor the squad majority’s wish to travel through The Neighborhood, the squad set their primary goal to become a team strong enough to serve in Border’s Neighborhood Expedition Force.

     In General

  • Brought Down to Badass: By service agreement made between Border HQ and Tamakoma, in exchange for the enlistment of Neighborhood-born Super Soldiers Yūma and Hyuse, the two of them are forbidden to use their Neighbor-grade Triggers; especially the Black Trigger owned by Yūma. Both Yūma and Hyuse are regulated to only use the standard Border equipment for combat, and are not allowed to use any form of Tamakoma’s customized weapons unless emergency allows them to go full power. With these challenges set, how Yūma and Hyuse would use Border weapons creatively are the highlights in Border competitions; and they certainly showed off big time.
  • Combination Attack: Osamu and Chika's combined attack. By the simple method of holding hands, Osamu is able to fuel his Asteroid with Chika's Trion.
  • The Gloves Come Off: Comfirmed via Yūma's case through his contribution within The Second Large-Scale Neighbor Invasion, as long as they stay within Mikado City's warzone areas, central Border will agree to allow super soldiers like Yūma to unleash their true combat powers only when emergency calls for it.
  • Naïve Newcomer: All of them are new enlistments to Border, with Osamu only been enlisted a few months in before the start of the story.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: As a squad who is regulated to perform under central Border standards while representing the strategically customized Tamakoma Division, Tamakoma-2’s uniform is designed with the uniform team feel of central Border squads but with customized clothing pattern cuts and accessories for each member to give them distinctive looks. Their division emblems kept Tamakoma’s brand of customized colors to signify the squad belongs to the Tamakoma family.
  • With a Friend and a Stranger: Osamu and Chika were friends prior to the beginning of the story, and befriends Yuma since the beginning chapters of the story’s narrative. Hyuse was introduced much later into the story under the watchful eyes of Border’s HQ, A-Rank agents, and Tamakoma members due to Hyuse’s status as a Prisoner of War.

The Captain of Tamakoma-2, and The Protagonist of the series with most of the story being seen from his perspective.

Osamu was first introduced as a C-Rank agent, then was swiftly promoted to B-Rank and transferred into the Tamakoma Branch by taking credit for uncovering the irregular gate mystery.

In order to protect Yūma and Chika from central Border resource abuse, and to pursue their shared goal of joining the expedition force, as much as he understands his limited capabilities as a combat agent, Osamu agreed to lead as their squad's captain.

  • Awesome by Analysis: He is great at analyzing the situation and creating new strategies on the fly with what limited resources he has.
  • Badass on Paper: Osamu's accomplishments were hyped up to sound a lot better than they actually were; especially since he took credit for some of Yūma's accomplishments to help hide Yūma's Neighbor identity, and fought no 3 attacker Kazuma to a draw (in a mock battle, after over 20 loses).
  • Boring, but Practical: With Spider, he can make wires to trip people and restrict their movement (or psyche them out in fear of the above). That's pretty much it—and it's very effective.
  • The Captain: As per Yuma's condition for joining, Osamu becomes captain of Tamakoma-2. He's confused at first, but it becomes increasingly clear why Yuma (and Chika) thought he'd be an effective leader.
  • Classical Antihero / Stock Shōnen Hero: Osamu is one of the first examples of a modern Shonen hero in blending the two hero types.
    • Calm and collected on appearance, Osamu has one heck of a deep Chronic Hero Syndrome mentality, and insists, as in “stubborn,” to fend for what he believes is right. At the same time, Osamu is shown to be timid, cautious, and often confused in unexpected situations; with practically no Trion power, no physical strength, nor Side-Effect superpowers to defend anyone, nor for himself; no matter how much Training from Hell he’s willing to go through.
    • Osamu’s initial reasons for serving in Border was simply to give himself a bit of self-worth to help civilians, and not out To Be a Master; most likely because he knows his own weight. As he begins a new journey with Yūma and Chika, we see Osamu’s constant struggle in wishing to become physically powerful. But reality slaps him in the face one after another to ground him, forcing him to look to his colleagues to show him other ways to become a competent man. The Aesop for him is you don’t have to be flashy to earn people’s respect. Learn to work with what you have, reach to what you can achieve, then use whatever skills you have honed to support your work environment, then people can see you and respect you for who you are.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He'll jump in to help anyone in need, including the very people bullying him.
  • Combat Commentator: For Tamakoma-2's first rank battle, as he was still recovering from his injuries and so sat it out.
  • Cowardly Lion: As Osamu himself puts it, he throws himself into danger because it's not his instinct to do so. He knows that if he didn't make prioritizing others a habit and instead ran away, then the latter would become his reflex instead.
  • Determinator: During the second invasion, he does absolutely everything he can to protect the cube-ified Chika, whom Aftokrator is targeting. He nearly dies in the process, but he succeeds.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When the class bullies are tossing around another student's pencil case and hit Osamu with it, he ignores the bullies and silently gives it back to its original owner (all the while nervously sweating): he'll always try to do what's right, but doesn't like to make a big deal out of it and lacks confidence.
  • Famed In-Story: To a degree. Most Border agents aren't all that recognizable, but post-second invasion, the populace knows about him thanks to his stint at the press conference.
  • Fakin' MacGuffin: In a particularly clever moment, Osamu takes advantage of Alektor's property to turn Trion attacks into cubes by deliberately firing off failed shots to create cubes out of them before swapping Chika's cube out for one of the duds. This maneuver is one of many that contributes to saving Chika's life, as Hairein was unable to realize Osamu had been carrying a fake until it was far too late.
  • Fatal Flaw: As to how Captain Azuma judges Osamu, “To overlook his own weaknesses in favor of taking up the full responsibilities of others is an unbalanced characteristic.”
    • Osamu’s Chronic Hero Syndrome has put his teammates into danger, and went as far as surely getting himself K.O.’d.
      • One, was the decision to use Chika's Trion to assist Izumi, only to find their location busted to enemies, resulting in Chika being cube-ified.
      • Then, there’s Osamu’s decision to fight head-on instead of hiding himself in belief his proactiveness would better help his team, which resulted in Osamu himself getting sniped by Azuma in one B-Rank Battle.
    • In an exchange between Azuma and Border Media Countermeasures Chief Nezuki, they mentioned Osamu’s initial attempt to ask Jin of all people to join Tamakoma-2 was absolutely hideous. As Osamu only had his sight in his team formation, and failed to look at the big picture of realizing if Jin was on board, Tamakoma-2 would become the biggest cheater in squad rank battles; which will completely destroy his squad’s reputation.
  • Following in Their Rescuer's Footsteps: Jin saved his life in the past (namely, when Osamu had snuck into the Forbidden Zone after Border rejected him), and he believes that it's played a part in who Osamu is today.
  • Guile Hero: His discussion with the upper echelon to get Hyuse on the team shows that he's not half-bad at negotiating, including using the very same tactic Netsuki once used against him (i.e. planting someone to voice dissent, thus providing him with the opportunity to bring up the counterargument).
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Played with. Osamu can't seem to catch up to the others no matter how hard he tries... because not only do they have years of experience over him, they're working just as hard. As Kitora points out, it would be unreasonable to expect that he could be on their level with just a bit of training, and that it'd be two years before he could genuinely catch up (and that's being generous). On the flip side, despite his low trion levels, Osamu's hard work does have visible results, such as when he fights a Marmod for the second time—just not when he's comparing himself to similarly dynamic human beings.
  • Humble Hero: Humble to the point of being a doormat.
  • I'm Not a Hero, I'm...: At the press conference, where he's accused of a hero complex for breaking the rules to save his classmates which resulted in the large-scale invasion, he responds with the awareness that he's not a hero. Being only an ordinary person, he acknowledges that all he can do is make what he thinks is the best decision in the moment, even if it ultimately ends up as a mistake. Therefore, he won't pretend that everything he does is the right thing to do.
  • The Idol's Blessing: Osamu is a mild Hero-Worshipper to Jin, who saved his life one time from Neighbors. Thanks to Jin affirming Osamu’s importance to Border, Jin became the most important backer of Osamu; granting Osamu’s enlistment into Border as a combat agent, and helps ensure Osamu is able to remain in Border despite breaking any rules.
  • In-Series Nickname: Many characters, whether amicably or as an insult, refer to him as Megane-kun(メガネくん), often translated as either "Four-eyes" or more literally, "Glasses".
  • Level Grinding: Osamu's secondary mentor, Kōhei Izumi (A01) gave Osamu his first Shooter 101 assignment of "grabbing 100 solo wins from A-Rank Butt-Monkey—Takeru Yuiga." Izumi's reason for this assignment is that Yuiga’s true specs belongs to a bottom tier B-Rank, yet is stronger than Osamu in Trion power; which makes Yuiga the perfect opponent for Osamu to do beginner-level trainings with.
  • Living a Double Life: Initially, his classmates don't know that he's a Border agent and he'd rather keep it that way, even though that bit of knowledge would stop any bullying towards him.
  • Magnetic Hero: Downplayed. While he's not as charismatic a personality as most squad captains due to his socially awkward tendencies, his proactiveness in leadership responsibilities, relation buildups, genuine kindness, and open-mindedness to understanding others has led to him getting the unexpected help of characters such as Kitora, and even finding an unlikely friend in Kikuchihara of all people.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: During his unconscious state during his Near-Death Experience, he goes through a series of quick flashbacks of how he ended up joining Border.
  • Near-Death Experience: At the end of the second invasion, where he's hospitalized and essentially comatose for a while.
  • Nervous Wreck: Mildly, in comparison to some other characters, but he's usually seen nervously sweating so often that it's practically part of his design. His volume profile even pokes fun at it.
  • Nice Guy: Extremely polite and helpful, even towards jerks and people he barely knows, not because he is naive but because he wants to do what is right.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He knows that he'll be reprimanded for saving his school—as he broke Border rules to do so—rather than rewarded, though enough characters pull some strings to ensure the latter happens. With that said, his act of heroism ends up having significant negative consequences down the line, even if Osamu makes it clear that he wouldn't change his decision
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Compared to the skilled and experienced Yūma and Chika's gigantic Trion-supply he is just a rather mediocre agent who can only survive by relying on his skills and wits.
  • Positive Friend Influence: He's responsible for helping Yuma adjust to Earth culture, after Yuma grew up in the constant warzone that is the Neighborhood, and eventually focuses on giving Yuma something to live for again, once Yuma realizes he can't bring back his father from his Black Trigger.
  • The Quiet One: Prior to Yūma‘s transfer to his class, Osamu is usually reserved in school, deciding to keep his service for Border a secret despite the fact that it would likely fend off the bullies of his class who likes to pick on him and his other classmates.
  • Refused by the Call: Border is known to have rejected Osamu’s application to be a combat agent due to his unqualified Trion capacity. How he managed to enter into combat C-Rank despite this is still unknown. Though it's implied Jin had a part in it.
  • Red Shirt: High-ranking Border agents know full well that Osamu is the combat agent with the lowest Trion capacity on record; in gaming terms, this means his overall Life Meter and Mana Meter is helplessly short. By common sense, Osamu's the easy point that everyone wants to get in competitions. Osamu noticeably worked hard to earn at least the Green Shirt, but there’s only that much he can perform; unless his teammates, especially Chika, is willing to go all out in battle to protect him.
  • The Scapegoat: Invoked but subverted. Eizo Netsuki tried to shift blame for the 32 C-Rank agents being kidnapped to Osamu, but because of Katsumi Karasawa, Osamu not only had the opportunity to stand for himself, he turns the situation around and says he will save the kidnapped agents himself, which earns a very favourable reaction from the public.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: As a C-Rank trainee at the start, Osamu's not allowed to use his Trigger equipments in real combat against Neighbors. But this didn't stop him from doing so to protect his classmates, and he explicitly states that he wouldn't change his decision.
  • Secretly Selfish: Downplayed. He dislikes people praising him for going out of his way to help Chika, since as he states, he's really doing it for himself as well: that joining Border was his way of coping with his frustration over his own helplessness.
  • Shirtless Scene: Takes off his shirt in episode 58 to blindfold a Trion Soldier and remains shirtless for the succeeding episode.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Osamu as a newly promoted B-Rank becomes this In-Universe after fighting Kazama in a practice match, ending with one draw out of 24 losses. Osamu was guilt-ridden and embarrassed by this since the rumors spun out of control describing Osamu as "dueling Kazama to draw after draw over multiple solo matches." The rumors died down when Osamu lost his match against Midorikawa; which immediately led to Midorikawa, and spectating C-Ranks disrepecting Osamu.
  • Small Steps Hero: Osamu Mikumo is an archetypical Small Steps Hero, as he makes it flat out clear many times that he will not ignore the plight of any helpless person to save his own life or to prevent a future tragedy/conflict. This comes back to bite not just him, but everyone on Earth after using his Trigger in real battle teaches the Neighbors that C-Rank Border agents can't Bail-Out. Because of this, Mikado City endured a second large-scale invasion from Neighbors that abducted more people than he originally saved, but Osamu makes it clear he'd do it all over again.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: One of the few people wearing glasses and definitely smart.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Can jump into danger without reservation, and when it counts, he can even stand up to bullies and make public speeches (though in the latter case, he falls apart a tad once out of the moment), but overall, dealing with people tends to make him nervous.
  • Supporting Protagonist: To a degree. His own development is one of the backbones of the series, but at the end of the day, the one whose motivations—going on the expedition, etc.—drive the plot forward is Chika, not him.
  • Sword and Gun: “Gun and Shield” to be precise. Osamu’s default combat stance is Gunner Type bullet, Asteroid as his main offense, with heavyweight morph sword, Raygust’s shield form as his defense.
  • Take a Third Option: Of sorts, but one of the biggest points of tension in the large-scale invasion is that at least one future leads to Osamu's death. In the final stretch, however, when things seem hopeless, he and Replica choose to enact a plan that, by Replica's own admission, is one that guarantees nothing as it's outside of Jin's precognition—that is, throwing Replica into Aftokrator's expedition ship.
  • The Team Normal:
    • Osamu’s Trion capacity is naturally low, and is not a person fit for combat by Border standards. In usual employment, Border would straight out place people like Osamu as an Operator or some position that doesn’t require high Trion output. But Osamu’s stubbornness and determination to be a combatant paved way for Jin to “scout him out.”
    • As to how their Operator, Shiori clarifies to Osamu right in his face, 6 (out of a total of 8) slots of combat equipment plus his avatar already took up half of his Trion capacity, while the “Bail-Out” system alone chews up a full nasty quarter of his Trion capacity. Like computer RAMs, leaving a portion of Trion space to allow users to use Trigger equipments without malfunctioning is important, so whatever Osamu currently have in his Trigger pack is already the maximum of items he could handle.
    • Because of Osamu’s low Trion capacity, Osamu is naturally the weakest link to any agents he’s teamed up with. For Border’s ranking competitions, if Tamakoma-2 wants to be an effective team, Osamu needs to be hidden and protected at all cost. But due to the team’s nuke bomb, Chika’s unwillingness to off people swiftly, whenever any team member plus Osamu gets eliminated off the battle ring would instantly place the team into a dire situation.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • His promotion to B-Rank is a significant boost. It doesn't instantly make him more competent, but with standard gear he can fight and defeat at least weaker Trion soldiers.
    • In the Large-Scale Invasion, he rather quickly defeats a Marmod, with ample callback to the early-on battle where he was almost killed by one. He also briefly fends of two Mod-Rabits, considered equal to A-rank agents.
    • As he was advancing in B-Rank Battle, Osamu took in the advice from A05 agent, Kitora in picking up the Trion-cost efficient Spider weapon. This allows him to expand a great deal of battlefield manipulation, and control.
  • Turn the Other Cheek:
    • He hardly bats an eye at Midorikawa's confession that he was trying to humiliate Osamu, as Osamu feels that his recognition was undeserved in the first place and is happy to clear the air about it.
    • He makes it clear that he doesn't begrudge Jin at all for deliberately using him and Chika to minimize damage to the city, even if it nearly got him killed and the latter abducted.
  • Victory by Endurance: How he wins their first B-Rank Battle against Suwa Squad. Osamu mostly stood around during the match; even if that itself was a mind game against his opponents. But the result is that Captain Suwa, the last guy standing, forgets Osamu was still in the field, and was eventually shot down by Osamu.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: For episodes 58 and 59, considering he takes off his hoodie to blindfold a Trion Soldier. Made even more hilarious by the fact that he didn't take his shirt off at the beach.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: For at least four episodes, from episode 56-59 by virtue of being captured by Gieve while still wearing a hoodie with green swim shorts.
  • The Watson: In the beginning, he's still relatively new to Border and therefore needs most of the world's mechanics explained to him, as does the reader.
  • Weak, but Skilled: The major difference with Osamu's fighting style in comparison to Yuma, Hyuse, and Chika is that unlike them, he has the lowest amount of Trion on Border’s record. Osamu makes up for it by using his creativity on cost-efficient Trigger equipment, his willingness to receive disabling injuries, and also reserving his actions to make critical shots. As Karasuma points out Osamu is weak but not stupid.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Part of why he fights, even when outmatched. As he tells Yuma, if he runs away even when people wouldn't begrudge him for it, he'll inevitably run away again when it matters—he knows himself well enough to understand how he'd behave.

Trigger Equipments
Main: Scorpion | Grasshopper | Shield |—|
Original Trigger Weapon: Unnamed Black Trigger. Usually refer to as either "The Dad Trigger," or "Yūgo's Black Trigger."

The Deuteragonist of the story, Yūma was a former Neighborhood wandering mercenary claimed to be the son of an Earthling Japanese father. To honor his father’s instructions to seek asylum with Earth’s defense organization, Border once his father lost his life, Yūma illegally came to Earth in attempt to meet with his father’s former Border comrades. By the arrangements from his Trion Soldier partner, Replica, Yūma is placed into the same school and homeroom class as Osamu. As Yūma befriends Osamu and helped him with Border missions, Yūma went on to join Border’s Tamakoma Branch to work as an agent alongside Osamu and Chika.

  • The Ace: Yuma is definitely this not just amongst his own team but to other agents of Border as well. Not only is he in possession of a Black Trigger and has full mastery over it, when he joins the ranks of Border he willingly switches to using a weaker Trigger and still kicks an insane amount of ass. Not only that but thanks to his years of combat experience in the Neighborhood he has a brilliant strategic mind for battles. Finally, during the second Neighbor Invasion he manages to defeat Viza in his normal Trion body and use the last of his power to finish off Hairein. By the time of the B-Rank Wars he is officially considered to be The Ace of Tamakoma-2.
  • Armed Legs: Can power up his legs with his Black Trigger.
  • Almighty Janitor: Starts as a C-Rank trainee after joining Border, despite being easily A-Rank in skill and S-Rank when using his Black Trigger. He still insists on going the normal through the rank-wars to earn a solid reputation as a neighbor in Border.
  • Ambiguously Human: Looks like a human but is a humanoid neighbor in truth. The white hair might give a hint (though it actually isn't entirely natural). Given that his father may very well have been a Japanese human, though, it's debatable if he's even a biological Neighbor, if any physical differences between them and humans even exist.
  • Badass Adorable: A rather cute looking young boy on the outside, an experienced and deadly soldier on the inside.
  • Bash Brothers: With Hyuse in the latter's debut Rank Wars match.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He acts like a goofball most of the time but will instantly switch back to his brutally efficient badass self when necessary. And he will utterly kick your ass if you ever harm or ridicule his friends.
  • Brutal Honesty: Has no issue with voicing his opinion (and generally only holds back if there's a practical reason to do so).
  • Catchphrase: Some variation of, "You tell some boring lies," when he's using his Side Effect.
  • Characterization Marches On: He was somewhat more emotive at the beginning of the series (e.g yelling at Osamu in confusion over Osamu's Chronic Hero Syndrome), compared to his characteristic unflappable attitude now.
  • Combat Parkour: Yūma's combat experience, small stature, and high physical flexibility allows him to perform high speed mobility and attacks with the use of Grasshopper, and Osamu's wire stations.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He is a master of coming up with new tactics that opponents never see coming.
    • In the second round of the B-rank Wars, Kuga surprises Suwa and Arafune's teams with his skillful usage of Grasshopper mid-battle, when in the previous round he hadn't used it at all.
    • In the third round, he distracts team Nasu's sniper Hiura long enough to kill her by attaching his cut-off arm to a piece of debris. Later, against Murakami, he uses Grasshopper to boost him into the river of the map. Unable to adapt to the situation, and burdened by his shield and long sword, Murakami is unable to keep up with Kuga, who has created fins out of Scorpion to manuever better underwater.
    • In the fifth round, Kuga's usage of Osamu's wires makes him unparalled in agility. He also uses Scorpion as emergency first-aid, repairing a hole in his torso with it to prevent excessive Trion loss.
    • In the sixth round, Kuga uses the standard Bagworm trigger to quickly assassinate Kurauchi of team Ouji - nobody expects an attack from a radar-invisible enemy while in the middle of a close-range firefight. Later, he uses Grasshopper on a pieces of debris to smack enemies with - even tripping up Oji with the use of a wire-attached piece of debris.
    • By the last round of the B-rank Wars, Kuga has developed a way of essentially throwing shurikens with Scorpion, which he can then further redirect with Grasshopper, increasing his options for fighting medium-range enemies. To top off his feats of Grasshopper usage, he repeats his feat from the sixth round and launches an entire car at team Yuba's Obishima.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: How he defeats Viza. Knowing that he's outclassed in both skill and experience, he's forced to use something that relies on neither: i.e. his unique circumstances of being in a Trion Body before his transformation.
  • Dual Wielding: Prefers using two Scorpions as his standard Border stance.
  • Experienced Protagonist: In contrast to Osamu, Yuma already has years of combat experience under his belt with the skills to show for it. However, it's played with: he's as new to Border as Osamu is and therefore also needs some explanations (not to mention his unfamiliarity with Earth in general).
  • Fish out of Water: Completely unused to Earth customs. A minor Running Gag is him getting hit by cars (because he forgets that you can't cross the street whenever) and being confused by money.
  • Foil: To Osamu, who's weak, constantly nervous, but altruistic. In contrast, Yuma is strong, always composed, but pragmatic to the point of occasional callousness.
  • Fragile Speedster: Yūma's Border gear focuses on high speed mobility, versatile attack methods, but with low defense. As long as Yūma is able to dodge attacks, he would be fine. But if strong attacker get him, he would get injuries easily.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Using his Black Trigger is this for him, as he's liable to get in trouble for using it otherwise.
  • Living Lie Detector: His side-effect, inherited from his father through his Black Trigger, lets him detect any lies spoken in his presence
  • Living on Borrowed Time: Living on life-support from his Black Trigger, Yūma’s physical body is already on the path to death. If Yūma’s Black Trigger, bound to his body as a ring, is removed from him, he would instantly die.
  • Locked into Strangeness: The white hair is part of his trion body, which he's stuck in. His real hair colour is black.
  • Magic Enhancement: An ability of his Black Trigger. Can be used both on himself and other Trion-users.
  • Memetic Badass: In-Universe. Along with the rest of his team Yuma becomes this during the C-Rank wars, firstly for managing to destroy the simulated Trion soldier in combat training in 0.4 seconds and secondly for curb-stomping Midorikawa 8-2.
  • Ninja: While using regular Border Triggers, Kuga essentially fights as a ninja - blinding agility, always calm, and with unorthodox tactics that catch opponents off-guard. By the middle of the B-Rank Wars arc, Osamu's usage of the Spider trigger to create wires allows Kuga to be even faster and elusive by using them to swing along paths enemies can't see. By the final round of the Wars, he even designs a way to use his Scorpion trigger to create shurikens.
    • Ironically, he does not use Chameleon, a trigger that would actually grant him invisibility.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Slightly. While the start of the series constantly shows off how good he is, things change once more of Border is introduced. Without his Black Trigger, Yuma is still extremely skilled, but it's largely due to his experience; compared to the top tier of Border, especially against similarly experienced agents, he isn't the best.
  • Older Than They Look: Yūma’s appearance has always been his Trion body, with his age being set on the time of his father’s sacrifice a few years before the current setting; which is why he has the looks of an 11-year old than a teenager who should to be into puberty. His physical body is sealed away inside his Black Trigger to preserve his remaining life.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Yūma is an experienced fighter in a kid’s body. Not a problem, since Trion-bodies don't rely on physical body mass anyway.
  • Power Copying: Yūma’s Black Trigger’s “Seal” system allows Yūma to engineer new weapons and utility Triggers with the right analysis. While Yūma usually can analyze opponent Triggers by himself, he can cook up new Trigger utilities faster with Replica's assistance.
  • Power Fist: His standard attacks with the Black Trigger involve punching things with a powered fist.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Coming from the battle-torn Neighborhood universe, Yuma lacks Osamu's Chronic Hero Syndrome or Chika's sense of pacifism, and takes little issue with unscrupulous actions if they're standard in times of war, whether or not he personally practices them.
  • Shirtless Scene: Goes to an indoor beach in episode 56.
  • Skilled, but Naive: While he is a very skilled individual, he has little knowledge on how Society works in our world.
  • Stepford Smiler: Behind Kuga's usually antics belies a young boy who feels he has nothing to live for and is just waiting until his death happens.
  • Survivor Guilt: Seems to have some form of this, as he wants to undo his father's Black Trigger to bring him back to life, even though said Black Trigger is all that's keeping Yuma alive.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: Just look at all the abilities of his Black Trigger listed here...
  • Technician vs. Performer: The Technician to Midorikawa's Performer in their first fight. Whereas Midorikawa tries to show off, Yuma is concerned only with defeating his opponent as efficiently as possible.
  • Worth Living For: He finds himself enjoying the Rank Wars and looking forward to his next matches, which Rindo and co. encourage—as it's a change from his original attitude, where he was simply just waiting to die.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Yūma is injured to near death by a mysterious foe from a Neighborhood war before the series began. His father sacrificed himself to create a Black Trigger, sealing Yūma’s physical body inside that very Trigger in order to keep Yūma’s remaining breath alive. And it’s only a matter of time before his life runs out.

Sub: Bagworm |—| Shield | Lead Bullet
(Equips Meteor for B-Rank Battle Round 7 & 8, slot unknown.)

The Childhood Friend of Osamu Mikumo, and the younger sister of Osamu's In-Home Tutor, Rinji Amatori. Neighbors have been frequently targeting her since she was little because of her unreported record-breaking Trion capacity.

As she learned Osamu is a Border agent, Chika proactively asked Border’s Tamakoma Branch to sign her up as a Sniper agent so that she can battle alongside Osamu, learn how to protect herself, and to have a chance to search for her missing brother, as well as her missing elementary school friend.

Enlisted into Border in the same season as Yūma and their other fellow schoolmate Izuho Natsume, like the two, Chika started off as a C-Rank trainee who needs to take Border’s joint Sniper training sessions besides the lessons from her primary mentor. By the transactions of combat reward points granted to Osamu and Yūma from their accomplishments in The Second Large-Scale Neighbor Invasion, Chika received the special express promotion to B-Rank, mostly because the HQ deemed her as a valuable asset for her Trion, and needs to be protected with the Bail-Out system.

  • Accidental Murder: Rank match "murder", but when she fires a Meteora at the mall in the Tamakoma-2 vs. Suzunari-1 vs. Kageura Squad vs. Azuma Squad match, she takes out Okudera without meaning to, much to everyone's shock.
  • Achilles' Heel: As powerful as she is, being a sniper means she's helpless once the enemy gets too close and she can't shoot. This gets subverted later on, when adding Meteor and Hound to her repertoire means that opponents who enter close-mid range are potentially in for a nasty surprise...
  • Affectionate Nickname: Chikako, as dubbed by Izuho. Toma starts using it for her as well.
  • Angst? What Angst?: In-universe, Azuma is surprised to hear that she shows no adverse reaction to accidentally KOing someone, considering her issues with shooting people and that Hatohara once had a Heroic BSoD for doing the same. There's a reason for this, though.
  • Badass Adorable: She's the cutest little kid you could think of... and also able to fire an almost unstoppable Death Ray.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: It's revealed to be her birthday right after she accidentally reveals to her next opponent that she can't shoot people, and therefore she's more preoccupied with the possibility that she just screwed her team over.
  • Blessed with Suck: Chika is in possession of an insanely high amount of Trion which even for advanced border agents is considered abnormal. Unfortunately this same power makes her a target for Trion soldiers, her brother and friend both end up getting kidnapped trying to help her, and during the Invasion Arc she is turned into a Trion Cube and almost captured by the Humanoid Neighbours. Girl's got it rough to say the least.
  • Born Winner: Naturally born with Black Trigger-levels of trion. Though, considering all the misery it's brought her, one might argue against the winner part.
  • Cassandra Truth: She's known about the existence of Neighbors since she was a child, since they would regularly come after her. Unsurprisingly, no one believed her (save for her eventually kidnapped friend) until the invasion.
  • Combination Attack: In the second invasion, she occasionally lends Osamu her trion, though this becomes obsolete once she advances to B-Rank and is no longer stuck with a trainee Trigger.
  • The Cutie: A genuinely sweet kid with an oversized sniper rifle.
  • Damsel out of Distress: The Mikumo vs. Oji vs. Ikoma match has her pursued on two different occasions, her allies too far away to help her—and each time, showing just how far she's come along, she uses her wits to escape. Oji even offers her his respect for outsmarting him.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Though she knows Osamu and Yuma wouldn't blame her for not being at the top of her game, she decides to step up when Hyuse practically challenges her to harden herself, as she doesn't want to be the weak link of the team.
  • Deliberate Under-Performance: She eventually reveals that her refusal to kill is actually this, and not out of genuine pacifism. In doing so, she hopes to avoid falling to Tall Poppy Syndrome.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Even after joining Border and starting her Sniper training, she still doesn't know half the extent of her Trion prowess.
  • Doom Magnet: Her enormous Trion attracts a lot of strong neighbors that try to capture her and are a danger to everyone around her. She has become traumatized after her brother and her best friend were captured by Neighbors.
  • Extreme Doormat: She generally goes along with whatever Osamu and Yuma decide, though it's implied that it's less that she genuinely has no opinions and more that she doesn't want to be a burden, and so keeps her thoughts to herself. And, at the end of the day, it's her desire to be on the expedition team that drives the team forward.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Less direct than Yuma's rivalries, as snipers don't typically have to fight each other, but she becomes sniper buddies with Ema and Hiura, the latter of whom she refers to as her senior sniper.
  • Friendly Sniper: For all her destructive potential she is the sweetest girl you could think of.
  • Gaining the Will to Kill: In Tamakoma-2's final rank match, where she takes the initiative—even before Hyuse can give her the command—to snipe Tsuji and take him out, allowing Osamu to defeat Ninomiya.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Played with. Being a very sweet girl, it's unsurprising when it's later revealed that she can't bring herself to shoot people. However, as Toma notes, there's a difference between "doesn't want to shoot" and "cannot shoot", and he's confident that she isn't the latter—she's otherwise very willing to snipe and help her team however she can, so it's not that she's unsuited for fighting. He fully believes that if cornered, she will fire.
  • Guilt Complex: She's developed one thanks to being Blessed with Suck. She essentially blames herself for her Dark and Troubled Past, and it's likely why she's quick to feel down when she thinks she's troubling her team in any way.
  • Heroic BSoD: She has a near trauma-induced shutdown during the second invasion, but fortunately snaps out of it when she remembers that she joined Border precisely so that she could handle situations like these and picks up a rifle to save Natsume.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She doesn't particularly value her own well-being, thanks to her trauma. Her teammates have noticed, and thus they try to discreetly encourage her to think more of her own life.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: In contrast to Osamu, who's held back by his physical capabilities, Chika's greatest obstacle is her own mindset: her lack of regard for herself and her insecurities.
  • Idiot Hair: In the middle of her head.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is called "Tamakoma's Trion Monster" after she blows a hole in the wall of Border HQ using an Ibis.
  • Memetic Badass: In-Universe along with the rest of her team. See the "Tamakoma's Trion Monster" thing above.
  • Nice Girl: Very sweet and never seen angry (though her reluctance to use honorifics with Hyuse suggests that, no matter how accepting she might seem, she's not entirely forgiving about him being a former enemy who personally tried to kidnap her).
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: When Ema asks if she also thinks Hatohara was a shoddy sniper for being unable to shoot people, she reassures him by explaining that no, she's the same... to which he tells her that, uh, he's her next opponent. Luckily, it ends up subverted, as he becomes one of the best people she could've told.
  • The Not-Love Interest: To Osamu. He's very devoted to her, but although a few characters tease at the idea of them being an item, there's nothing to indicate they have any romantic feelings for each other (and both have had more Ship Tease with other characters).
  • Oblivious to Love: She's most likely unaware that Ema has a crush on her.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Small stature, ridiculous amount of Trion.
  • Reluctant Warrior:
    • Mostly by virtue of being a sweet, pacifistic little girl. She has no problem with shooting lifeless targets, buildings and Trion soldiers, but she can't bring herself to directly shoot humanoid targets (even though they wouldn't die anyway).
    • Ch. 179 reveals it's more complicated than everyone thinks. Chika admits she's not actually that scared of shooting people. She's worried that if she takes advantage of her abnormal trion levels and goes all out, others will fear or resent her for it, and thus she presents herself as "weak" in order to be liked.
  • Secretly Selfish:
    • Chika believes she is. It starts with how she blames herself for the disappearance of her friend and brother, but hates that she was more upset by the possibility that people would blame her, rather than her friend's fate in itself. Usami and Reiji suspect this factors into why she's so determined to go on the expedition, as it's a means of resolving her internal frustration.
    • Similarly, she admits her reasons for being unable to shoot others are rooted in her desire to be liked, and similarly, she feels that if she ever does shoot someone, it'll be less because she wants to help her team and more because she doesn't want to be blamed for not doing anything.
    • With that said, it's very clear that her Guilt Complex and Heroic Self-Deprecation play a part in all of this, and Usami and Reiji reassure her that this a completely normal way to think.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's a bit on the timid side.
  • Stepford Smiler: Typically smiling to the point that it's become her default expression, but she's definitely traumatized by the events that have transpired around her in the past. Consequently, she doesn't have much in the way of self-worth and is particularly troubled. As the second invasion showed, it takes a tremendous event to shake her but once it does she nearly breaks down altogether.
  • Storybreaker Power: Once properly trained, if Chika were to fight with her full strength, she'd be near invincible simply by decimating her surroundings. Of course, so that she doesn't trivialize the Rank Wars, that means there are things holding her back.
  • Supernatural Sensitivity: Chika possesses the Side Effect that allows her to detect the locations of Neighbors.
  • Tareme Eyes: A trait shared by none in the manga.
  • Technical Pacifist: It's pointed out that she's this, even with her supposed refusal to shoot people, and why Toma and Hyuse believe she's capable of "killing" if she needs to. She has absolutely no issue with shooting people with a Trick Bullet or blasting things in their general vicinity; Toma even describes her as someone with a personality suited for battle.
  • Too Awesome to Use: In the first handful of rank matches, Chika herself is this. If she fires, it's a gamechanger. However, it's also so flashy that it immediately gives away her position, meaning it can only be used either a) right away when everyone is still gathering their bearings, or b) late in the match when the opponent likely can't catch her. Both choices usually involved her spending the rest of the Ranked matches being hunted by the other teams.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In small ways, but while she starts off Unskilled, but Strong, in later rank matches she's shown to have gotten better at playing mind games with her opponents.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rice. Usami and Konami complain that she's only eating rice when they go out to eat in chapter 178. Later, during the away team selection exam, she fills her entire carry on bag (which was meant for personal items.) with nothing but rice.
  • Trick Bullet: How she gets around the whole "can't shoot people" thing. Ema introduces her to the Lightning + Lead Bullet combo, allowing her to shoot with the full reassurance she isn't actually causing damage.
  • Unable to Cry: Osamu has only ever seen her cry once, ever (that is, when her brother disappeared and Chika believed it to be her fault). Even when Osamu is hospitalized and essentially comatose, his mother notes that Chika didn't cry at all.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Downplayed, but once it becomes known that she can't shoot people, her opponents are often caught off-guard when she does attack (albeit not directly). Played straight in Tamakoma-2's final match, where Osamu admits that despite her declaring beforehand that she was ready to shoot, deep inside he hadn't quite believed her, which was his mistake.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: HUGE Trion-supply, but still an inexperienced trainee and not the best shot even among the new snipers. As times goes on, she begins to shift towards Strong and Skilled, demonstrating an improvement in technique and an impressive tactical ability.

B-Rank, All-Rounder
Emblem Color: Light Azure Blue
Years in Border Service: Newly Enlisted (New Border 5th Gen.)
Age: 16 Years
Primary Mentors: Viza (Aftokrator), Tamakoma Branch
Expedition Selection Exam Shuffle Team: [11] Wakamura

Trigger Equipments
Main: Kogetsu | Senkū (Kogetsu extension) | Shield |—|
Sub: Viper note  | Escudo | Shield | Bagworm
Original Trigger Weapon: Lampyris (Neighbor-grade)

A Neighbor hailing from Aftokrator, who participates in the second invasion and attacks Mikado City. However, he was abandoned by his comrades and held captive by Border under the surveillance of the Tamakoma Branch. Circumstances led him to agree to join Tamakoma-2 as their fourth combat member, and pose as the nephew of Tamakoma Branch engineer, Michael Kronin to conceal his Neighbor identity.

  • Angst? What Angst?: Subverted in-universe. He seems rather unbothered about being a prisoner of war and and mostly hangs out with Yotaro, watching rank matches. However, Enedra warns Osamu and Yuma that Hyuse must be desperate to return home and is undoubtedly just biding his time—and sure enough, it turns out that he's been monitoring Neighbor orbits in secret for his chance to escape, which comes to a head during the Galopoula attack.
  • Animal Motifs: Enedra frequently compares him to a dog, due to his Undying Loyalty. Funnily enough, Hyuse is actually fond of dogs.
  • Awesome by Analysis: Most of what he knows about Border's techniques are simply from watching the logs, and after observing a single match, he can essentially pinpoint each of Tamakoma-2's flaws.
  • Bash Brothers: With Yuma in his debut Rank Wars match.
  • Berserk Button: Though normally stoic and composed, insulting his superiors in any way makes him visibly angry.
  • Bio-Augmentation: His horns are this, as part of Aftokrator's technology. They boost his trion.
  • Blatant Lies: During the away mission test, Hyuse, in order to hide his horns, convinces his squadmates to let him use a single bed room for the entirety of the test. He does this by telling them that, as a Canadian, he has to be alone in order to sleep.
  • Boxed Crook: Joins Tamakoma-2 for a chance to get back to his adoptive family.
  • Brutal Honesty: He doesn't hold back. Exemplified with Chika: everyone else treats her gently, but Hyuse directly asks her if she really can't shoot people, claims that she seems to be deluding herself, and points out that in a real battle, her hesitation could get Osamu and Yuma killed, sending poor Chika spiraling into anxiety. However, he wasn't wrong. Chika admits to Usami and Reiji that she probably can shoot people and that she hasn't been completely honest about why she refuses to.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: He can use the reflective properties of Lampyris's magnets to blend in with his surroundings.
  • Child Soldier: One of the straightest examples in the series. He was bought and made into a Super-Soldier as a young child, and while House Ellin is suggested to treat him as one of their own, earning his Undying Loyalty, it's telling that he still refers to its head as his "master".
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: During his enlistment period, a number of girls are attracted to him. He doesn't notice/doesn't care.
  • The Comically Serious: After being stranded in earth where he has to interact with Tamakoma weirdness.
  • Compassionate Critic: Thanks to his Brutal Honesty.
    • It doesn't take long before he starts rubbing shoulders with Osamu (albeit in a one-sided manner, given Osamu's personality). However, Yuma asks for some understanding from Osamu, as he can tell that Hyuse is harder on himself than he is on anyone else and is this strict because that's how badly he wants them to win.
    • He doesn't hold back on his evaluation on Chika's under-performance, but it's because he believes—even more so than Osamu and Yuma do, in some ways—that she can do better, and his call-out forces her to take a good look at herself and how she wants to proceed.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: To the C-Rank rookies, and then most of the B-Rank Attackers in a Kogetsu-only match. He's on the receiving end of one himself from Tachikawa, though he manages to get one win against him (which is no easy feat).
  • Defrosting Ice King: Though his primary focus is getting back to his homeland, and he initially is rather antisocial towards the others at the Tamakoma branch, he over time shows a more honest side of himself as a person, striking up an unlikely friendship with Yotaro and praising and fistbumping his teammates after a match.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His Trigger "Lampyris" makes him capable of controlling magnetism.
  • Fish out of Water: On account of being stranded on Earth, where he's unfamiliar with numerous customs.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: For Tamakoma-2. He's effectively a Sixth Ranger for now, but he's made it clear that he has no intention of sticking with them for long, beyond what's necessary.
  • Happily Adopted: It's suggested that he's this by House Ellin.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In a rank match, so non-fatally, but he tells Chika to fire a Meteora at him, since if she's successful, she'll take out several of his surrounding enemies even if he "dies" in the process. Unfortunately, for other reasons, it fails and Hyuse is left to try and get out of his situation alone.
  • Hidden Depths: His profile mentions that he likes to draw.
  • Honor Before Reason: When he refuses to cooperate with Border's questioning as a gesture of goodwill (which he needs), even knowing that Enedra(dd) has pretty much spilled everything anyway. As he puts it, it's not a matter of gains or losses: it's about being able to face his master again with his honour intact.
  • Informed Attractiveness: His good looks are frequently noted by Border agents.
  • Insufferable Genius: He views himself as superior to most Border agents. On the other hand, he's not wrong.
  • In the Hood: Usually on his casual attire on earth.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: He ends up as a prisoner of war and later joins Tamakoma. If you're reading this, you already knew that.
  • Moe Couplet: With Yotaro (they were even one of the few 7-star dual units during the mobile game Smash Borders' run!). Around him, Hyuse goes from being stoic, stuck-up, and unfriendly to... stoic, stuck-up, somewhat more friendly, and also a bit of a big brother figure. Expect fans to squee whenever he and Yotaro do a fistbump.
  • Morph Weapon: His Neighbor-grade Trigger, Lampyris consists of countless metal parts that he can freely form.
  • Not Afraid to Die: As a prisoner, he states that threat of torture and/or death doesn't unnerve him, and as Kikuchihara confirms, he means it.
  • Not So Above It All: Konami's not the only gullible one around. Somehow, he thinks Raijinmaru is just a dog with a really big head.
  • Not So Stoic: Almost always cool and composed—making it very notable when, while fighting Jin, Jin outwardly wonders why Hyuse will be abandoned there and Hyuse loses it, likely due to suspecting exactly why.
  • Odd Friendship: Is genuinely fond of the 5-year-old Yotaro, with him going along with Yotaro's antics and the two sharing fistbumps, going as far as to thank him before trying to meet up with Galopoula.
  • One-Man Army: As he demonstrates in Tamakoma's final rank match, where despite 4-7 enemies ganging up on him from all sides, he does a very impressive job of fending for himself.
Oji: How's he not dead yet? Geez...
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Said before slicing Reghi apart:
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Attacking Mikado City was his job and nothing personal, as far as he's concerned. When he offers to join Tamakoma-2, he truthfully states (at the time, at least) that he no longer cares about capturing Chika and just wants to return home. Him being this trope is also why Shinoda doesn't want to treat him poorly, feeling that Hyuse shouldn't be held completely accountable for his superiors' decisions.
  • Sore Loser: When he hears that he has the second-best record in the enlistment test?note  Request another chance to do it again.
  • The Stoic: He doesn't emote much.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Cold and blunt if he doesn't like you; however, he's also highly devoted to those he cares about, and in Japan, he shows a kinder side to Yotaro.
  • Super-Soldier: Of Aftokrator, thanks to Bio-Augmentation.
  • Tranquil Fury: His usual mood.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Aftokrator. Hairein was however sure he was going to betray them eventually, and so his true Undying Loyalty would be more towards his master.
  • Winged Humanoid: Can create metallic wings on himself and allies, though the flight actually works by being shot through a magnetic track like a railgun.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Downplayed—in a Kogetsu-only bout, he's roughly on par with Ikoma (and loses to Tachikawa), but it's also noted that this is Hyuse when he's rusty with a sword. He also loses 8-12 to Yuma, but this is when he's essentially never touched any of the triggers he's currently using before.

     Replica

Voiced by: Hideyuki Tanaka (Japanese), Marco Soriano (English)

Tropoi Autonomous Trion Soldier

An intelligent Trion Soldier that serves as a guardian and guide to Yūma Kuga.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Yuma still thinks of him, and one of the reasons why Osamu feels that they have to get on the away team this season is because no one knows how long Yuma has left, and Osamu at least wants to reunite him with Replica before his passing.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: A non fatal version of this happens during the end of the Invasion Arc. Replica is sliced in half by Moira's attack and is left heavily damaged knowing that the time it would take in order to open the door to Border HQ would be to long he has Osamu throw him into the portal linking the Neighbors ship to the outside world in order to force the ship to leave the planet. This forces the Neighbors to leave without acquiring Chika but because of his heavily damaged state he can't fly away and is stuck in the Neighbours ship as it teleports away.
  • Mr. Exposition: A large part of his role is explaining the worldbuilding.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: To Yūma Kuga. He acts as his guardian and also gives him certain powers.
  • The Smart Guy: Thanks to his travels with Yuma and his father Replica has extensive knowledge, not just of the Neighbor Worlds, but triggers too. Not only is he the A.I. that controls Yuma's Black Trigger but his extensive knowledge of the Neighborhood allows him to update Border's systems, create a replica Rabbit after analyzing one of the original models, and, with Osamu's help is ultimately the one who forces the Aftokrator neighbours to retreat.
