Black Out

Their story begins now.
In search for the Heart’s Melody, OBSYDIA journeys through the present.
Like the moonlight seducing in the darkness night...

Nijisanji EN's second wave, whose members were selected from the same pool of auditions that produced LazuLight and were teased in LazuLight's official art, debuted in July 2021.

OBSYDIA

    In general
  • The Artifact: Their shtick of being the Shadow Archetype of LazuLight. This fades away soon after their debut, as Rosemi and Petra do not manage to be Darker and Edgier than Pomu and Finana most of the time.
  • Catchphrase: "OBSYDIYEAH!", which they exclaim in the few instances that they collab together.
  • Darker and Edgier: What OBSYDIA was supposed to be, acting as the Evil Counterpart to LazuLight. This didn't last long, though. Selen is the only one who keeps this trope going on consistently.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The members of OBSYDIA can be seen in the background of LazuLight's key art.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: In Rosemi's game "OBSYDIA Anniversary", the three members are divided as a Mage Marksman (Rosemi), a Fighter (Selen), and a Mage (Petra). Rosemi is the marksman who shoots, Selen does most of the damage and typically fights up-close, and Petra's main job is being the healer. Rosemi and Selen can also buff the party, with Rosemi giving the most beneficial buffs.
  • Foil: Rosemi and Petra are this to each other. Rosemi is a shy nerdy girl, a Nice Guy who doesn't swear, has difficulty to insult or compliment someone on the fly, is regarded as the most seiso member of the EN branch and rarely gets bullied by her chat or her colleagues because of how sweet she is, and she's also a Tsundere. Petra is more of the normie side, she swears all the time, she can easily insult or compliment someone spontaneously, is usually bullied by her chat or colleagues, and she's also a Yandere. Rosemi hates the yandere archetype because she finds them creepy, but Petra likes them because she thinks they're cute.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: As a group, OBSYDIA is the English wave who don't collab with each other as often as other English waves do.
  • Identical Stranger: The two scientist ladies who appear in Petra's lore video "vaguely" look like Selen and Rosemi, and they also sound like them. OBSYDIA pokes fun at this fact during Ethyria's debut program.
  • Land, Sea, Sky: One of the main themes of the group. Selen is the Sky, Rosemi is the Earth, and Petra is the Ocean.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Rosemi is Nice, Selen is Mean, and Petra is In-Between. Rosemi is considered the purest sweetheart of the EN branch, Selen often teases her fellow livers and is nicknamed "the toxic dragon", while Petra gets bullied a lot, but she can dish out some mean insults if she wants to.
  • Signature Laugh: Each of them has a very distinct laugh. Selen's can be compared to a car engine, Rosemi's can be compared to a seagull or windshield wipers, and Petra's is "HEHA".
  • Town Girls: Rosemi (Femme) is a bubbly and pure-hearted Rose-Haired Sweetie in a Pimped-Out Dress, Petra (Neither) is a Shrinking Violet with a snarky streak, and Selen (Butch) is a competitive FPS gamer who engages in Vulgar Humor more than Rosemi and Petra combined.
  • Yandere: The group as a whole is supposed to be this, which is mostly reflected in their debut song Black Out. This has become The Artifact, with only Petra being fit into this role.

    Rosemi Lovelock

Rosemi Lovelock [JP: ロゼミ ラブロック]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosemi_pr.png
"Hey buds! How's it growing?"

"A rose maiden raised in a beautiful garden.
Pretty as a rose in a vase, but a little sharp to the touch."
— Official profile

Debut date: July 17th, 2021
Birthday: September 16th
Languages spoken: English, Japanese, French, Spanish (elementary level), Italian (elementary level), Korean (learning)
Illustrator: アバンドン蘭花
Channel: YouTube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: ■ years old
Height: 150 cm
Species: Purebred Cultivated Rose of highest standardnote
Place of origin: Implied to be Neverland
Occupation: "Cute Rose Maiden", Gardener, "Pro Gamer", Office Lady

  • A-Cup Angst: She gets angry when her chat teases her about her flat chest. She gets really angry when Mysta calls her (goose avatar) flat.
  • Absurd Phobia: Big Bazongas.
  • Agony of the Feet: Before the start of the off-collab between Enna, Millie, Elira and Rosemi, her shoes were hurting her feet and she had to take them off while the four were resting at the park. A stranger approached them awkwardly and asked her if she's okay. Even though she was wearing tights, Enna would joke throughout the entire stream that the stranger was attracted by Rosemi's "prickly, sparkly toenails" (which can be seen through the tights), and Enna would not stop talking about how pretty Rosemi's toenails are. This has resulted in a Running Gag involving her feet, which ultimately has culminated in her receiving free assets with her feet and legs on the table, which she has used on her stream.
  • Animal Motif: Her fandom, the Rosebuds, are depicted as pigs with rose decoration on their heads. Rosemi likes to call them "buta".
  • Art Evolution: Rosemi is the third EN liver to receive a 3.0 brush-up, which gave her new facial expressions and more fluid animations. She debuted her 3.0 model on April 7/8, 2023.
  • Batter Up!: In a true sukeban fashion, her fourth outfit comes with a baseball bat as a weapon which has her name on it, but it's also wrapped with thorns.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Subverted. She often threatens her chat (and sometimes other livers) with violence or death, but she never comes off as threatening enough.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Hazukashii!", which is Japanese for "embarrassing".
  • Child of Two Worlds: She is fluent in English, Japanese, and French, and can also speak a little bit of Spanish, Italian, and Korean. Unlike Selen and Petra, who are also multilingual but have stated that English is their native language, Rosemi's response to a question about her first language was very ambiguous, merely stating that multiple languages were used in her household.
  • Chuunibyou: Despite being "Satan", she often behaves in a way that would be considered chuunibyou. Several of her colleagues have described as one of the most chuuni members in EN. Her fourth outfit invokes this trope, since chuunibyou is one of its major themes and several design elements are based on chuunibyou fashion.
  • Coat Cape: Her fourth outfit comes with a dark jacket that she wears as a cape, which is part of the chuunibyou sukeban aesthetics.
  • Continuity Nod: Not to Rosemi herself, but the introduction scene in her debut stream references some of Pomu's lore and jokes in semi-subtle ways:
    • When Rosemi asks the nearby bumblebee about Pomu, he responds with "That's Pomu. She's a fairy... or something?", most likely referencing her tendency to get called anything but a fairy Examples .
    • At one point when Rosemi is talking about Pomu, an image of the fairy colored entirely in blood red flashes for a split second, bearing a striking resemblance to Pomu's figure when she forcefully interrupted Elira's Henry Stickmin Series stream, as well as the nightmare-inducing "totally normal" Minecraft stream that followed shortly after.
    • She refers to her non-Vtuber job as a position within S.C.A.M., calling back to Pomu's company as well as the fact that Pomu was (at the time of Rosemi's debut) the only other Nijisanji EN member who was open about holding a full-time job outside of streaming.
  • Cosplay Café: She and Pomu ran a spooky maid cafe for Halloween as the setting to tell ghost stories.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's one of the cutest and sweetest member of EN, but she has a habit of threatening her audience with violence and sometimes has some outbursts with her shouting for violence. She still manages to come as cute whenever her psycho side comes out.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Befitting to the chuunibyou theme of her fourth outfit, she has one little fang sticking out as part of the new model, making her look like a cute vampire.
  • The Cutie: With the combination of her design, her innocence, her voice and her personality, many fans and other NIJISANJI talents swear by how adorable she is.
  • Devil in Disguise: Rosemi has occasionally claimed to be Satan, even describing her Doom Eternal playthough as disciplining her employees. Turns out, technically she's not Satan herself, but her heir/daughter.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Raisins. She often expresses how much she dislikes them.
  • Dual Boss: Rosemi's game "OBSYDIA Anniversary" has a couple of dual bosses. Ethyria appears in pairs, namely Reimu & Enna, and Nina & Millie. Elira starts out alone, but she can call Pikl for help. The evil OBSYDIA appears as a triple boss.
  • Ear Worm: Any time she's in a big collab, expect at least one other member to start singing her theme song. It's that catchy.
  • Entendre Failure: Finana and chat tried (unsuccessfully) to explain to her what "Deez Nuts" jokes were.
  • Exposed to the Elements: She mentioned that back then in the Rose Academy she would sometimes wear thigh-high kneesocks rather than tights, with her friends asking her if her legs were cold, which she responded with "Nah. Listen, style is a priority."
  • Eyepatch of Power: Her fourth outfit comes with a medical eyepatch that covers her right eye, fitting for its chuunibyou/Japanese delinquent themes. She claims that it is sealing her power.
  • Fighting Game: She's primarily a Tekken 7 player and wishes to be able to stream it though she's also taken to learn Melty Blood: Type Lumina on-stream.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Rosemi is G.A.Y. "Good at Yu-Gi-Oh!."
  • Genki Girl: She's not lacking for energy.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Rosemi is one of the most feminine girls in EN: she wears a frilly Pimped-Out Dress as her default outfit, has a rose motif and an association with the color pink, loves cute things, and is widely considered the most pure-hearted member of the branch. That being said, she's a big fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! and loves fighting games and shounen anime.
  • Goal in Life: When asked during her guest appearance at Otakuthon 2022 about what kind of stream idea she would like to do the most, she immediately answered that it would be live footage of skydiving, uncaring of Nina's worries in the event that things go south. In January 4th/5th, 2024, the day she reveals her fourth outfit, she also releases a video of her bungee jumping as a substitute for skydiving.
  • Gratuitous Japanese. She often uses Japanese words randomly.
  • Has a Type: When it comes to fictional girls, she has a preference for Tomboys and androgynous girls.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Whenever someone makes a tierlist about how seiso or wholesome the NIJISANJI EN members are, they all tend to put Rosemi as the most purest member. And if she catches wind of it, she will chime in and say that she's much worse than they give her credit for, which they and the viewers don't buy at all.
  • He's Not My Boyfriend: She keeps confirming and denying that she likes Link as a husbando. She told Aia for the latter's "Guess the waifu" game that Link is her husbando, but she would say in a later stream that she doesn't have a crush on him. "Maybe? Had? Had?" Given her Tsundere behavior, she definitely likes him. When chat comments that Link is into tsunderes, Rosemi reacts disgusted, indirectly admitting that she would be his type. In another stream, she mentions that her Twitter timeline is cluttered with Zelda fanart (mostly Link) because she gave likes to Link fanart, but she refuses to admit that she has a crush on him. When she becomes attracted to Sheik, she questions her sexuality, resulting in this dialogue with her chat below.
"I don't have a crush on Link! It's not true! Maybe Sheik? I'm gay? Oh my god! Heeeh! Both?! No, no, no, no! I like Link. I mean, no, I don't!"
  • Hey, You!: She is known for referring to people - including chat - as "Buta" or "Buta-san" which translates to "pig". It's associated enough with her that any pigs that show up in games played by the other OBSYDIA members are dubbed Rosebuds (her fandom name), and Petra comes across a pig barn in Minecraft and asks if it's Rosemi's house.
  • The Hyena: She turns into this during her Nintendo Switch Sports collab stream with Alban, who keeps making her laugh throughout the entire stream.
  • I Call It "Vera": The Beretta 92FS Inox pistol that Rosemi carries in a cross-draw holster as part of her second outfit is called the "Electric Wind God Gun" or "EWGG" for short.
  • The Ingenue: Has shown to be surprisingly resistant to sexual content in the sense that most bawdy jokes and references either her chat or her NijiEN colleagues make completely fly over her head, earning her a reputation as the purest and most "seiso" of NIJISANJI English and possibly even Nijisanji as a whole. Fellow livers like Enna also mentioned that Rosemi acts like this even off-stream.
  • Irony:
    • Rosemi is regarded as the most seiso member of the EN branch, yet her JP oshi is Ange Katrina, and Rosemi herself is Rindou Mikoto's EN oshi. Both, Ange and Mikoto, are members of the infamous SKB-bu ("Perverted Club").
    • She's a plant that is afraid of insects.
    • After her 3.0 debut, she puts a VR headset asset on her model during the next Youtube stream, which hides the face of her new and improved model.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Her fourth outfit is a mix of a sukeban theme and a Chuunibyou theme. She wears a dark Coat Cape, wears baggy pants (albeit with one of its legs being torn apart) and wields a baseball bat as a weapon.
  • Jerkass to One: Despite being a Nice Girl, she happily participates in bullying Petra during collabs.
  • Leg Focus: Her third outfit shows a lot of her bare legs, and her chat has noted how long her legs are. The reveal of said outfit has a lot of panel time on her feet and legs.
  • Mascot: Her fandom are represented as "Rosebuds", which are pigs that wear the same rose decoration as Rosemi's.
  • Nervous Wreck: Known for her frequent bouts of comical worrying or what she calls "Freaking It".
  • Nice Girl: She is exceptionally pure-hearted and kind.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She enjoys horror games and generally isn't phased by gory and violent scenes.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: She does a few of them on-stream. One of them is later incorporated into her theme song.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Her rigging is such that she has a constant smile on her face, so when she's really smiling, it's as bright and wide as possible.
  • Playful Cat Smile: One of her new 3.0 expressions is a cat smile.
  • Precision F-Strike: Normally she doesn't swear beyond saying light swears like "crap", "damn", "hell", "kuso" and "temee". When she does use heavier swear words, it's usually when she repeats them or reads them out loud.
    • During her The Radio Station collab with Enna, the latter enables her to read out loud what's written on the screen.
      Bullshit!
    • During the Besties off-collab, when Enna, Millie, Elira and Rosemi are switching bodies, Rosemi repeats Millie's following words:
      Millie: Oh shit!
Rosemi: What do you mean "oh shit"?!
    • When she tells her experience of streaming the demo of Tekken 8, she expresses how "pissed" she was going through all that trouble.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Her original outfit has green tights to match her rose-themed skirt. Rosemi loves tights in general and absolutely hates wearing jeans.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Rather literally and her demeanor fits. Of note here is that, according to some, pink roses do in fact signify sweetness and grace.
  • Running Gag: The "sparkly toes" incident has become a running joke within the community and her streams, as her feet would often become the center of attention by her fans or other livers, such as Enna and iPN. The fact that she tweets about how her tights often get holes doesn't help of forgetting her sparkly toes at all. Also, whenever (her) feet becomes a topic during her streams, she would almost always mention iPN. This gag has led Rosemi noticing fanart of her feet on multiple occasions, and culminates in her receiving free assets of her legs and feet, which she now occasionally uses during her streams.
  • Satan Is Good: She's identified as "Satan" in a Freeze-Frame Bonus in the "Black Out" music video, and she's made references to living in hell, but she's a sweetheart through and through. Doubly so since she's the actual Satan's heir.
  • Separated by a Common Language: There is a moment of confusion between Rosemi and Pomu in a Minecraft stream when Rosemi refers to the meat symbol that represents hunger as a "pogo". The "pogo" that she refers to is not the jumping device, but rather the Quebecois name for what Americans know as a "corn dog". Context
  • Sexier Alter Ego: Played for laughs with "Brosemi", who is Rosemi with incredibly muscular arms.
  • Shipper on Deck: She loves "Psyborg" ("UkiXFulgur") and she giggles when writing fanfics about them.
  • Shout-Out: Her "OH YEAH! VERY GOOD!" is a quote of Furudo Erika's Gratuitous English moments from Umineko: When They Cry.
  • Signature Laugh: Two; a breathy huffing and a high pitched squeak often compared to a seagull. Often the former is followed by the latter.
  • SNK Boss: According to her, the boss enemies in her "OBSYDIA Anniversary" game were so difficult that she had to Nerf them several times in order to make her game playable.
  • Something about a Rose: As her name would imply, her design is rose-themed, including her outfits and a prominent rose in her hair.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When she first encountered Selen's Stylistic Suck Minecraft house, Rosemi compared it to Picasso... which is exactly what Selen had said with regards to her decision to make it as bizarre as possible, just a few days before.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Most of the NPCs that appear in Rosemi's "OBSYDIA Anniversary" game are modeled after various EN livers or her favorite fictional characters, but they have their names and appearances altered. This partially applies to her game's bosses, mostly Vox Akuma, as he's being repurposed as "Vox Sucma". The only EN livers who don't appear in her game are Yugonote , Zaionnote  and all of Krisisnote  and beyond.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves sweets and calls herself a connoisseur. She uses this trope during her 3.0 debut stream to introduce her new happy face.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: She insists on being called "The Great Rosemi-sama".
  • Trap Master: When she plays Yu Gi Oh Master Duels, she has a preference for Traptrix and Altergeist, two feminine archetypes that both heavily focus on setting Trap Cards.
  • Tsundere: While not stereotypical, she's been called a tsundere from time to time, which she often denies, but occasionally admits to it. Selen would later confirm on a stream that Rosemi was supposed to be the Yandere of OBSYDIA and Petra as the tsundere, but the two ended up becoming the opposite of these types due to their personalities.
  • The Twelve Spoofs of Christmas: Rosemi released a cover of The Twelve Days of Christmas, which is sung by most almost all members of NIJI EN (from LazuLight till TTT), with the original lyrics being replaced by NIJISANJI-coded lyrics (with several variations in different verses). The most common lyrics in that song are:
    Finana:Twelve eggs a dozen
    Meloco: Eleven ghosts are banished
    Kotoka: Ten disastrous dishes
    Sonny: Nine gms tweeted
    Doppio: Eight D's for Doppi
    TTT: We’re the Troublemakers
Maria, Aia, Aster & Ren: Six magic students
    Shu: Five sorcerers
    Petra: Four seasons fleeting
    Krisis: Three Krisis heroes
Elira & Selen: Two sister dragons
    Rosemi: And no furniture, hazukashii!
  • Unusual Euphemism: Rosemi almost never curses, or at least, she doesn't use very bad curse words. While "crap", "hell", "suck" and "kuso" are okay, she often uses substitutes for other bad words:
    • "Pluck" for "fuck". This becomes especially obvious when she googles "pluckboy" and the definition she reads out loud is for "fuckboy".
    • "Spit" for "shit".
    • "Beach" and "binch" for "bitch".
      "Plucking beach!"
      "Nijibinch!"
    • "Basshole" for "asshole".
      Rosemi: He's a basshole.
      Claude: A what?!
      Ren: He's a basshole?!
      Rosemi: Yeah.
Ren: 'Cause he plays the bass?
    • During her "12-Hour Endurance Challenge", when she and her colleagues chat in Town of Salem, they discover that the game also uses this trope, with the word "rose" being used as a censorship replacement for "vagina", much to her dismay.
Millie: "Vagina" is a rose? Does that mean Rosemi is...
      Rosemi: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!
  • Vocal Evolution: Averted. When watching OBSYDIA's debut streams, Petra and Selen note that Rosemi still sounds the same since her debut. Rosemi still cringes at her debut self regardless.
  • Weight Woe: In her Ring Fit Adventure stream, when the game prompts her for her weight, she worries that people will think she's fat. She converts from kilograms to pounds and enters her weight...which turned out to be less than 100 lbs / 45kg.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Invoked; after receiving a compliment on her accent, Rosemi states that she feels that it's a weird mishmash of other accents. A lot of her "t" sounds become hard "d" sounds when speaking in English, which she has been playfully teased for.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Despite being a plant, she's afraid of insects and introduced her scared and crying face with this trope in her 3.0 debut.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: She's into some yaoi fanfics, including Heavy x Medic. She also took part on Selen's Fujosanji stream. Although she's not nearly as bad as the other members of that stream.

    Petra Gurin

Petra Gurin [JP: ペトラ グリン]

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/petra_pr.png
"Konpen!"

"A penguin who spent much time alone in the frosty sea.
Has charm and complex emotions as the stormy sea."
— Official profile

Debut date: July 17th, 2021
Birthday: December 4th note
Languages spoken: English, Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin
Illustrator: ももこ
Channel: YouTube
Social Media: Twitter

Age: "no ^_^"
Height: 142 cm (first outfit) —> 152 cm (second outfit)
Species: Frost Penguin
Place of origin: Frosty Sea
Occupation: High School Student

  • Ambiguous Situation: Enna claims that the current Petra is a fake who replaced the original Petra since the second outfit reveal, and Enna even made a dedicated mini-stream about her hypothesis, with "fake" Petra having taken her hostage and cloned her, and that NIJISANJI is trying to "replace" "fake" Petra with new VTubers. It doesn't help that Petra jokingly admits to it.
  • Animal Lover: Petra had an entire stream dedicated to squeeing over viewer submitted images of their pets.
  • Animal Motif: Penguins. Her hair and clothes evoke the image of them, and there's a running joke that she has actual flippers underneath her flipper-shaped sleeves. Her fanbase, the pentomos, are big, round penguins that look like plushies.
  • Born Unlucky:
    • Every attempt that Petra makes at placing well in Mario Kart 8 DX that isn't doomed from the start inevitably ends with last-minute heartbreak.
    • During the Super Mario 3D World collab with OBSYDIA, there was a point where Petra was the last one standing, navigating narrow platforms, and in the final 100 seconds. She, after much trepidation, nabs 100 coins to open the possibility of reviving Rosemi or Selen...only to immediately fall off of the stage.
  • The Bus Came Back: She returned from her hiatus after she was granted permission to stream from her new home which is Japan. This is reflected in her new overlays which are appropriately themed in Japanese.
  • Character Catchphrase:
  • Character Tic: Her left eye often twitches when something is unpleasant.
  • The Chew Toy:
    • She's the most frequent target of abuse by both chat and the other girls.
    • Her Overcooked 2 collab with Selen consisted primarily of Selen bullying her.
    • In one Mario Kart 8 DX collab, she is bullied by Pomu and then gaslit by Rosemi and Selen.
    • When she posted her reference sheet on twitter, people were quick to point out that her butt was visible in it. What follows is, as you'd expect, everyone making fun of her for it, and using it against her, much to her embarrassment. Even Nina, on her very first day of streaming, gets in on it.
    • Whenever OBSYDIA get the chance to collab as a group, both, Selen and Rosemi, will bully Petra whenever they can. After a Mario Kart 8 DX collab, Rosemi even says that she realized that Petra deserves it. Similarly, the Petra in Rosemi's game "OBSYDIA Anniversary" is still treated in this manner. During their second anniversary, Rosemi and Selen manage to bully Petra by using their 3.0 tears, as she has no 3.0 brush-up yet.
You're bullying me with your tears!
    • There are also multiple occasions where Petra likes being mistreated. Such as during her Jump King stream, where she asks her fellow livers to roast her instead of encouraging her, since either would have the opposite effect on her. During a Mario Party collab, she asks Ren to call her "bitch" in his Goofy voice, much to her delight. During her OBSYDIA 2nd Anniversary stream, she tells her viewers to physically abuse her little plushie version because she thinks that doing that is cute.
  • City Mouse: Seems to be, given that on OBSYDIA's first group Minecraft stream she mistook chickens for ducks not due to the flattened beaks in the game's graphics but because she thought chickens were yellow.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Igarashi Rika from Idios, since they share the same illustrator. Petra also acts like a big sister to Shu and Luca.
  • Crocodile Tears: She's very prone of faking crying noises. One time, she faked her crying so realistically that she had to clarify on Twitter that she was faking it as usual.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She became a victim to this. During her OPERATION:TANGO collab stream with Mysta, when the latter asked her if penguins can swim, she tried to make him realize the answer by saying that LazuLight and OBSYDIA were Similar Squads and have members that represent the sky, earth and ocean, and that she's the ocean's representative of OBSYDIA. Unfortunately for her, when Mysta tried to remember who the members of OBSYDIA were, he completely blanked out that Petra was the third member.
  • Fanservice Pack: Her second outfit has her chest area buffed considerably, as well as giving her longer hair and legs.
  • Gamer Chick: Subverted; in a bit of Self-Deprecation, she states that she "sucks" at games and is living proof that you don't have to be good at them to join Nijisanji. It doesn't help that she is highly-prone to motion sickness, restricting the types of games that she can play without suffering from symptoms.
  • Hidden Depths: One of her talents that's rarely touched upon is her graphic design skills; she has designed stream overlays for herself, Selen, Rosemi, Reimu, and Mysta.
  • Honorary True Companion: Petra forms the friend group NijiUK which consists of her and three members of Ethyria. After, Nina's graduations, NijiUK is literally just her and the rest of Ethyria. NijiUK is later transformed into an official sub-unit called zuttoღo, cementing how close she is to the current members of Ethyria.
  • In the Hood: She wears a penguin hoodie and has the option of pulling the hood over her head.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Despite her sweet and shy demeanor, she drops a surprising amount of F-bombs, particularly during her horror game streams. She has been called out for her language by other members of Nijisanji EN, with even Selen getting in on it.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Most notably with Shu Yamino, with whom she forms the Penguin Siblings. They both have similar hair and are so fluent in Japanese that they often collab with their JP colleagues. The two of them also have the occasional sibling banter on Discord or Twitter.
  • Mascot: Her fans are the "Pentomos", which basically look like big, fluffy penguin plushies. The official art for the "NIJISANJI x Medi QttO" collab depicts her with a big Pentomo plushie.
  • Nepotism: Played for laugh, there's a running gag of how Petra got into Nijisanji by nepotism.
  • Only Sane Woman: In contrast to Rosemi, who rather enjoyed Selen's OBSYDIA Minecraft house (for the same reasons Selen claimed to make it), Petra was horrified by the chaotic combination of blocks, doors, wool, and dirt.
Petra: Um, I'm looking to be adopted by a different group. Would anyone like to accept me?
  • Phrase Catcher: Her chat is frequently filled with "Noot Noot" (referencing Pingu). Petra herself has said it a few times as well.
  • Put on a Bus: Between September 24 and November 12, 2022, Petra had to take a break from streaming because she was moving to Japan, and she wasn't allowed to stream until all the paper work was done, hence her seven weeks long hiatus. She was still active on Twitter the entire time, though. Other livers were not allowed to talk about how they met Petra in Japan until Petra's return on Youtube.
  • Running Gag:
    • Petra being a member of LazuLight due to the OBSYDIA house incident that led her to try to defect from the group, or being a member of the main JP Nijisanji branch due to her language proficiency.
    • ANYCOLOR CEO Riku Tazumi being Petra's uncle, based on a joke in a collab with Selen that made its way onto Nijisanji EN's main channel and resulted in everyone successfully summoning him on Twitter.
    • Petra is regularly referred to as a normie, even by herself, after she mentioned that she maintains a healthy sleep schedule and regularly goes out to socialize.
    • The idea that she keeps her fans (Pentomos) locked in the basement so they can't escape, reflecting the "Yandere" personality.
  • Seasonal Baggage: Her third outfit, which comes with the official formation of zuttoღo, is spring-themed. Appropriately, Petra is the first of the four to reveal her zuttoღo outfit.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Her second outfit adds 10 cm to her original height and also boosts her cup size, coupled with longer hair.
  • Shrinking Violet: Her debut presents her as such, with a secret organisation (headed by someone who looks a lot like Selen) trying to get her out of her shell.
  • Signature Laugh: "HEHA." Which she does in a very cute tone that is difficult to replicate.
  • Sixth Ranger: It's often joked about that Petra is either part of LazuLight, Ethyria, Luxiem (as Peter) or the JP branch because of how often she's hanging out with them rather than with OBSYDIA. Regarding Ethyria, three of them and Petra actually formed the unit NijiUK, with "UK" standing for "Unbelievably Kracked". NijiUK eventually has now officially become zuttoღo as a recognized sub-unit, with all four members receiving new outfits to celebrate its official birth.
  • Stealing from Thieves: After confronting the horror that is Selen's Minecraft house, she takes blocks off of Selen's house to build her own place. When chat comments on her theft, Petra cites "Ocean Law" as proper justification.
  • Tender Tears: She's very prone to making crying noises. Subverted, since she's faking them.
  • Token Minority: She's the only member of OBSYDIA who isn't based in Canada. This is taken further with having changed location to Japan, where's she now collaborating with a lot of her JP colleagues, being the foreigner of NIJISANJI's JP streams.
  • Tuft of Head Fur: She has a tuft of hair resembling the crest of feathers present on some penguin breeds. Sometimes teased by her fellow livers/chat who compare it to a paint brush, causing her to quickly put on her hood.
  • Twitchy Eye: She very often has one twitching eye whenever she reacts to something negatively or when she's laughing. Most of the time, it's her left eye.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Downplayed; she won her first ever Apex Legends match despite dealing zero damage, though not before being on the wrong end of a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Yandere:
    • While all members of OBSYDIA are supposed to be this to some degree, Petra is the only member who actually tries to maintain this trope from time to time, and she has the assets to enforce this trope, such as her chibi VR model which has a knife and a bloodstained face. Selen would later confirm in a stream that Petra was supposed to be the Tsundere of OBSYDIA and Rosemi being the yandere, but the two ended up becoming the opposite these type due to their personalities.
    • When Enna is having a vacation in Japan, Petra kidnaps her for an off-collab, and according to Enna, Petra, whom she describes as "fake", allegedly cloned Enna to make streams on Enna's channel.
    • At some point while playing Parasocial, she treats her stalker as her oshi, while she's the one acting like the stalker instead of the other way around.
    • Her 2023 birthday voice pack includes a yandere voice track.

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Selen occasionally gets teased about the way she pronounces "Nijisanji", making it sound like it has roughly three extra E's and five extra A's (roughly "NEEE-ji-SAAAHN-ji", as heard here).
  • The Ace:
    • She is an expert Apex Legends player who casually mentions having played with competitive-level players and, after getting the okay from her manager, revealed that she was a Top 500 Apex Predator (as in, one of the top 500 Apex players on the planet) at some point prior to joining Nijisanji. Just one example of her skill is her first collab with Finana where she, despite playing with a fresh account and sticking with a weak handgun in an attempt to handicap herself for Finana's sake, still wins the game for their team (dismantling a 1v3 in the process) and inadvertently gets them pushed into servers with players that are much closer to her actual level.
    • She also had plenty of practice in Overwatch, being an eight-time top 500 player in that game before she moved onto Apex Legends. Upon returning to the game for the Overwatch 2 closed beta (which carried over her MMR), she found herself matched up against a 3-stack of renowned former Overwatch pros xQc and Seagull and longtime rank-1 support player Redshell, and she won despite being paired with randoms without voice chat.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: Her pet dragon Ember serves as an avatar for Selen's IRL dog, and a lot of the dog's character and stories are carried over to the dragon.
  • All Lower Case Letters: the vast majority of her stream titles are like this.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • Early on in her 102-kill Apex Legends challenge, she happened to be teamed up with an actual sponsored Apex player. What was initially glee over the thought of stealing kills from him turned into salt as he wiped the map while leaving nothing for her. Even after her team won the game, she just dismissed it before returning to the lobby.
    • She repeatedly attempted to temper her fans' expectations in the lead-up to the September 2021 Apex Legends Reignite Cup, stating that she, Bonnivier and Hada are players with some skill but little-to-no tournament experience going up against highly-skilled, highly-experienced players. Sure enough, their team ("Actual Gold Players") finished at the bottom of their pool, though in fairness all three were heavily exhausted (and, in Bonnivier's case, in actual physical pain) largely due to the ever-shifting circumstances surrounding the tournament. Context
  • Anti Poop-Socking: She ends streams by urging viewers to take care of themselves, including getting up, stretching, and heading to bed if they stayed up late to watch the stream.
  • Art Evolution: Selen has received her 3.0 brush-up in January 2023, which is basically a permanent Animation Bump, and works on both of her outfits. She has gained several new expressions, can lean forward and backwards and has smoother animation. She's the first EN liver to receive the 3.0 brush-up.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Like Elira, she's prone to going off on tangents during the chatting portions of streams. It also comes into play in her Starcraft I stream, where she's prone to forgetting mission objectives and things like landmine placement.
  • Badass Boast: Unlike many Vtubers, Selen does not cover up her minimap in Apex Legends streams and, when asked about it, states that anyone that needs her minimap is probably not good enough to win a firefight against her.
  • Be Careful What You Say: She read a superchat stating that they woud literally pay $200 for Selen to play a horror game. Selen's response was a smug "Go on, I'm waiting." Cue two $200 superchats, which she agreed would be worth two games of Phasmophobia. She ended the stream with 17 games of Phasmophobia having been purchased, followed by three more in her next stream.
  • Berserk Button: "Loot goblins", Apex Legends players who spend an extended amount of time gathering weapons and ammo instead of looking for a fight. The fact that Finana tends to play this way adds to the comedic tension between the two in their Apex collab.
  • Chekhov's Gun: "Bear Selen" was created on Minecraft during Selen's debut week, and she later said that she wanted her mama to make it an official outfit. Almost two years later, it finally came true.
  • Child of Two Worlds: She's Chinese by blood, but raised in Canada.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: She frequently jokes about Apex Legends and games with similar skillsets being only games she's skilled at, with platformers being a noted weakness. Clearing Shovel Knight and defeating the Yellow Devil without using the pause glitch in Mega Man says otherwise.
  • Crossover: Her "Apex Special Guests" series of Apex Legends streams sees her teaming up with various Apex players outside of Nijisanji EN, including livers in other Nijisanji branches (such as Bonnivier and Bora), Vtubers outside of Nijisanji (such as Re:AcT's Qualia Qu and VShojo's Zentreya and Froot), and other high-level players (such as rpr and Tempplex).
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Given how often she plays Apex Legends, she mixes up controls and mechanics whenever she plays another game with gunplay, such as Resident Evil 4 (where she died due to forgetting that her shotgun has less shots per reload than Apex) and Serious Sam: The First Encounter (where she keeps pressing "R", which reloads in Apex but opens a menu in Serious Sam).
  • Darker and Edgier: While OBSYDIA in general is clearly intended to be a darker counterpart to LazuLight (a fact quickly pointed out by Pomu), Selen's design is explicitly an edgier take on Elira, down to having the same artist. She has the same fangs, hair-wings, mismatched eyes, and similar hair decorations (in most art), but has dark purple hair to contrast Elira's light blue and dark baggy clothes as opposed to Elira's light overalls. Her official art and model also gives her a more smug expression than Elira. She also keeps her dark-colored dragon companion Ember perched on her right shoulder, as opposed to Elira keeping the light-colored Pikl on her left shoulder.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Ember gets his own stream to himself, during which he entertains chat with a variety of music and later collabs with Pikl in Apex Legends.
  • Does Not Like Men: Ember, who Selen states only likes adult women, which causes issues when she needs to find him a veterinarian.
  • Fantastic Arousal: During one of the Niji Wings collab, Pomu offers up chat to have them lick Enna's toes, with then Enna responding that they can lick Selen's wings on her head, which Selen heavily disagrees to.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: On Friday September 23rd, 2022, Selen and Pomu switched models and their channels during the day. They each played their signature games on the other's channel; Selen played Apex on Pomu's channel, and Pomu played Minecraft on Selen's channel. The two even mentioned this trope by name.
  • The Gadfly: She loves teasing and trolling almost everyone, from the rest of Nijisanji EN to the likes of Bonnivier. In fact, she mentioned that this is her way of showing affection and that you should be worried if she's not teasing you.
  • Gamer Chick: Selen is perhaps the most traditional example in Nijisanji EN, being highly skilled at modern first-person shooters while also being willing to play classic games as far back as the original Mega Man. One of the first games that she completed on stream is Onimusha: Warlords, a game from her childhood that is very different than standard Vtuber gaming fare. She notes that her father was a gamer and she spent a lot of her childhood either playing co-op with him or hand-me-down games that he had cleared, but as a consequence does not have a lot of history with Nintendo consoles and disliked the one Zelda game, "the one with the trains", that she did get to play.
  • Groin Attack: Team Snake Bite's name is based on the idea of a man having his penis bitten by a venomous snake, and the only way to save him, is by having a friend suck the poison out of the penis.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Played for Laughs in her My Friend Peppa Pig playthrough. After unknowningly completing all achievements, the game no longer had a nighttime state causing Selen to express mock horror over the neverending day as the characters no longer went to sleep and all the event dialogue repeated itself.
  • Has a Type: The main thing she wants in a partner is a sense of humor that can complement her own.
  • Hidden Buxom: Like Elira, Selen is surprisingly endowed under all of that baggy clothing. The second outfit makes this obvious as well as giving her a fair amount of bounciness as well as a healthy dose of sideboob.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite portraying herself as a hardcore rough-n-tumble competitive dragon with an ego to match, she has some traits and interests that contrast with this image.
    • She's into Magical Girls (Although the series that she lists, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Magical Girl Raising Project, and Pretty Cure aren't exactly frou-frou for differing reasons), Keroro Gunso (A goofy Manga about alien frogs trying and failing to conquer planet Earth), and Pajama Sam and Freddi Fish (Both Edutainment Game series made by Humongous Entertainment). Also, while she loves Transformers, she doesn't like the Michael Bay movies, even though they're much closer in tone to her personality.
    • She initially told her fans not to expect "guerilla" (unplanned) Apex Legends streams from her because streaming the game with the reputation that she has carries a certain level of pressure that she needs time to mentally prepare for, though she has since held numerous spontaneous Apex streams. She was also less than pleased by "stream snipers" attempting to derail her Apex collab with Pomu by immediately jumping Selen and the third teammate, stating that their antics made things worse for not just Pomu (who Selen was attempting to teach about the game) but also for the third team member, who could possibly be someone with adult responsibilities who is having their limited time for video games ruined.
    • The first piece of her artwork that she showed off was an adorable collection of Nijisanji mascots and, for those that don't have mascots, livers reimagined as dragons. Her official design template for her fans - the Dragoons - wouldn't feel out of place next to the cuter Pokémon or Digimon.
    • Pomu recounts Selen getting in touch and apologizing after she thought that a particular Minecraft prank made Pomu legitimately angry, with Pomu noting that Selen is secretly "Moe".
    • Despite her energy, and her ability to banter when collabing, she has mentioned that she can actually be pretty introverted. Especially when in larger group settings. This can be seen in some of the larger collabs or the birthday streams where she typically stays more quiet.
  • The Hyena: Selen is very easy to amuse, and she's very prone to dissolve into giggles (or more accurately, loud cackling) during gameplay.
  • Implausible Deniability: Her sponsored stream of Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage had her boldly claim it was her first time playing and that any evidence to the contrary (such as her leveled team, high scores, or episodes unlocking) was purely a visual glitch.
  • Insistent Terminology:
  • Irony:
    • She notes that she was given the most Japanese to sing/rap in OBSYDIA's debut single "Black Out" despite easily having the weakest command of the language of the trio, if not the entirety of the EN branch to that point. Doubly so since Elira, her equivalent in LazuLight, is the most fluent of that trio.
    • Despite being not just a dragon but a dragon racer, she is known to be exceptionally terrible at flying whenever she plays a game where she has to fly.
  • Just One More Level!: She admits that, while she's getting better at controlling it with age, she is prone to playing a competitive game for an obscene amount of time when she sets out to learn or accomplish something, often requiring her teammate(s) to tell her that it's time to stop.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: She has the foulest mouth in OBSYDIA, though Petra is a close second place.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Selen taunts Elira for dying to a skeleton in the latter's Hardcore Minecraft stream. Selen calls back to the incident when encountering skeletons during her first Shovel Knight stream and, sure enough, she's done in by one. She then proceeds to get killed by a skeleton when she plays Minecraft for herself, which was not missed by Elira.
  • Long Neck: A Running Gag is that how long her neck is, and while Elira also has a similar long neck, the latter's outfits draw less attention to it. During the Woo Gods collab, they tried to make Selen's neck a crucial part of her rewritten lore and how it shrank.
  • Lovable Coward: When asked about horror game streams, Selen replied on Twitter that she was, in her own words, "a little bitch when it comes to scary games" and was adamant she would never stream one, save for a significant milestone or losing a challenge. When chat asked her about it in a Q&A session, with someone even commenting that they would pay $200 to see a Phasmophobia stream, she made the mistake of accepting the challenge, agreeing to play one game of Phasmophobia for a $200 superchat. Unfortunately for her, chat not only called her bluff within seconds, but over the next few minutes put forward over $3500 in superchats towards a Phasmophobia stream, forcing her to do an 11-hour marathon stream of the game (with Selen aptly demonstrating throughout that her earlier statements of not handling horror games well were not an exaggeration).
  • Mascot: Her fandom are the "Dragoons", which take the form of small, purple and cute dragons.
  • Motor Mouth: She talks quite a bit and is very high-energy, to the extent that she admits that "not knowing when to shut up" is a debuff that counter-balances her prowess at Apex Legends.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite regularly snarking about how perverted the rest of the EN branch is, she has her moments as well:
  • Oblivious to Love: When she was taking a restroom break, Ollie from Hololive Indonesia Gen. 2 was talking about how she loves and adores her. Then she came back with Ollie still talking about her, and told Vestia Zeta (from Hololive Indonesia gen. 3) that she was just listening in. When chat asked her about it, she admits she actually didn't listen to Ollie's confession the whole time and was messing with her.
  • One of the Boys: Her dynamic with male VTubers and streamers if she's the only girl in the collab, especially when the typical boys talk comes up.
Vox: It's not always about the penis itself. Sometimes, it's about your spiritual penis. It's the penis you feel like you have.
Sonny: We all have a penis in our hearts.
Selen: Are you trying to say I don't have a dick, Vox?! Is that what you're trying to imply?
Luca: 'Guys, I feel like I have it. I feel like I have it.'
  • Power Trio:
    • Aside from OBSYDIA, Selen has a number of noteworthy Apex Legends teams, which naturally fit into this trope:
      • "Actual Gold Players" (Reignite Cup #2) — Selen, Bonnivier Pranja, Ban Hada.
      • "W key" (ShibuyaHAL Custom) — Selen, Kanae, Qualia Qu.
      • "fxxking girl's ♡" (Reignite Cup #3) — Selen, Qualia Qu, Mitwun.
      • "Team iPN" (OTK Apex Invitational) — Selen, iPN, brucewayner.
      • "Don't Kill Us" (Reignite Cup #4) — Selen, Qualia Qu, Obly.
      • "Team Snake Bite" (VSaikyou #5) — Selen, Axel Syrios, Regis Altare.
      • "Team 500 Ping" (VirtuaReal Apex Tournament), Bonnivier, Maria Marionette.
    • Outside of Apex, she also has formed trios with her fellow branch members.
      • Niji Wings, with Pomu and Enna.
      • Woo Girls/Woo Gods, with Pomu and Rosemi.
      • PMS, with Pomu and Mysta.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Selen is the red to Elira's blue.
  • Red Right Hand: Her left hand is an oversized claw, seemingly not fully transformed from her dragon form.
  • Running Gag:
    • Ember likes chicken but is allergic to it. So when Selen takes a restroom break, which is usually preceded by perching Ember on her shoulder and then sliding off-screen to leave Ember by himself, viewers "sneak" Ember chicken by spamming chicken emojis.
    • Several jokes have been made about Selen's long neck after she points it out. (Elira has a similarly-long neck due to sharing an artist, but her long hair calls less attention to it.)
    • She started a gag of blaming things that go wrong in a stream, especially in Apex Legends, on rpr.
    • Ember being depicted as a musician or DJ.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: When faced with the infamous "Yoku blocks" in the Mega Man (Classic) games, she starts saying "BADUM" repeatedly in an attempt to emulate the blocks' distinct sound effect. The Selen fangame Rocksuki brings this full circle by using her actual vocal clips for the Yoku blocks, much to her amusement.
  • Shapeshifting Failure: Selen is not as adept at keeping a human form as Elira; as a result, she cannot hide her fangs, has a claw for her left hand, and has a giant tail.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Selen has this going with Elira, who is, as it turns out, her older sister.
  • Signature Laugh: Her laugh is a hearty cackle, with her longer laughs being compared to a car engine starting up. Given that she laughs a lot, it's one of her defining traits.
  • Sticky Fingers: She steals almost everything that she puts her hands on in Minecraft and claims that it's fine based on "Ocean Law".
  • Stylistic Suck: Her first solo Minecraft stream on the Nijisanji World server was aimed at building a house for OBSYDIA. It ends up being a jumbled monstrosity created using whatever blocks, doors, and crafting tools Selen could get her hands on, with Selen openly acknowledging that she was probably pissing off every single Minecraft enthusiast watching. She even managed to get Pomu, Bonnivier, and Reza to join in. Rosemi ended up loving it, Finana called it "terribad", and Petra was so disgusted that she decided to build her own house.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • When she began the second fight against Marcellus in Onimusha: Warlords, she dismissed him as being weaker than the fight against Samanosuke's Evil Doppelgänger. It ended up taking several tries for Selen to defeat Marcellus, the most notable of which was an absolute Curb-Stomp Battle where Selen could do nothing but laugh while Marcellus stunlocked Samanosuke into oblivion.
    • She did this with her Dragoons, betting that they wouldn't be willing to shell out super chats for the express purpose of making her do something rather challenging for herself. This has resulted in her having to do a nineteen-game Phasmophobia stream.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's notably one of the most tomboyish girls in EN and thus has this dynamic with several other female livers, with Elira (her (Kayfabe) sister), Pomu (a frequent collaborator) and Rosemi (fellow OBSYDIA-member) being prominent examples.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She admits that she grew up as a Tomboy (such as pretending to be part of the Power Rangers during recess as a child) and still sees herself as one. That said, she has shown a number of traditionally-feminine interests such as her love for Sanrio.
  • The Trickster: Her debut portrayed her as this, possibly something of a Karmic Trickster as she seems to be scaring off humans to free a captured dragon.
  • Unusual Euphemism: In an early stream, she replaced "bitch" with "Beyoncé".
  • Vocal Evolution: Selen's debut voice is higher-pitched and a bit cuter than her regular voice. She thinks it's because she was nervous at that time. Her debut voice disappeared after one or two more streams.
  • We Have Reserves: Her mantra in strategy games, helped by her faction of choice in Starcraft being the Zerg. She also jokingly mentions in her "Try Not To Laugh" stream that she doesn't have any qualms about sacrificing all of her Dragoons to win a challenge.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's afraid of insects and has told stories about her fear of them when she used to be a young dragon.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Selen has been an avid fanfic reader for years and has plenty of experiences with man-to-man romances, amongst many other things she has read. She even has streamed a fanfic stream where she and other fujoshi write fanfic romance stories between their male co-workers.
  • You Keep Using That Word: No matter how much the chat corrects her, she will refer to helicopters as planes.

Pomu "knows bad British words"

Pomu shares a couple of UK curse words with Rosemi while the two are keeping the AFK Nina's audience entertained. Unfortunately, she doesn't pronounce "minge" correctly and says "crunch" instead of "clunge".

How well does it match the trope?
