    Princess Maya

Princess Maya Teca, the Little Eagle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/warrior_maya.png
Voiced by: Zoe Saldaña (English),Foreign V As

The free-spirited daughter of King and Queen Teca, who longs to be a great Eagle Warrior like her mother. After a family tragedy, Maya learns that she is the Great Eagle Warrior destined to slay Lord Mictlan, the God of War alongside three great heroes.

  • Action Girl: From the get go Maya displays incredible fighting prowess when entering the ring with Bear Killah, and it only gets better from there.
  • Animal Motifs: Eagles, of course! Her macuahuitl and battle armor are eagle-themed, she strives to become an Eagle Warrior, and during her battle with Acat her shadow briefly takes the form of an eagle. She's revealed to be the Great Eagle from the prophecy, and when she becomes one with the sun her soul takes the form of a golden eagle.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She apologizes to Bear Killah several times while beating him, and later to Acat after she stabs her in the heart.
  • Badass Adorable: Is one of the cutest characters Gutierrez and Equihua have ever designed and can floor a burly man more than triple her size. Later on she goes toe to toe with multiple gods, although not without struggle.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • More like "Little Sister Instinct". A huge part of her vengeance fueled quest against Lord Mictlan is because he was the reason behind the deaths of her brothers.
    • Played straight when her newest siblings, Jaguar (brother) and Eagle (sister) are born during the final battle. She makes sure they are safe and cared for before heading off to fight.
  • Big Fancy Sword: Her primary weapon is a huge, eagle-themed macuahuitl known as the Eagle Claw that lights up on occasion, particularly if she is fighting a god, and is crafted by the blood of gods. She inherited this weapon from her father.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "Holy cacao!"
    • "If it is to be, it's up to me", too.
  • Character Development: The adventures, triumphs, and failures she has throughout the story transforms her from a prideful, selfish child who only cared for vengeance into a mature, wise leader who knows when to admit her wrongs.
  • Commonality Connection: She starts off hating Zatz, but starts to see him differently when she learns that they're both Semi-Divine children of a mortal and god. Her learning that he's a Noble Demon cinches it.
  • Cool Big Sis: Maya's reaction to her new siblings is nothing less than happiness and calling them "cute". And she has an Imagine Spot of hugging them both before her Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Similarly with eagles, she's often associated with the sun. Used to foreshadow her death and how she actually becomes the sun.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: This and Last Stand. Even when death is upon her Maya never gives into despair, drawing strength from her friends and family to push through her injuries and destroy Lord Mictlan's heart before he can incinerate her first. She goes out fighting, and in a literal blaze of glory.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Severely injured from the battle and moments away from Mictlan's unavoidable attack Maya accepts that she's going to die, even flashing back to her friends and family and imagining holding her newly born siblings. However, as the above shows she goes out swinging, dying on her terms instead of Mictlan's.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: According to Gutierrez, Maya's hair, clothing, and tattoos were purposefully designed to be asymmetrical to emphasize her dilemma of living life as a diplomat or a warrior.
  • God of Light: After dying she becomes the sun.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Maya is often cruelly referred to as a "half breed" by the antagonistic Gods.
  • Happily Adopted: By Queen Teca, who is revealed to be stepmother in the first episode. Despite being rightfully angry at her husband for his affair, Queen Teca never blames Maya and loved her like her own. And Maya loves her just as much.
  • Hartman Hips: She had thick legs and her hips are almost wider than her shoulders.
  • Heroic Bastard: One night King Teca and a human-disguised Lady Micte were sparring until the "tension" became too great. Nine months later Maya came into the world, and about fifteen years later she would embark on a quest to save the world from the vengeful Lord Mictlan.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To kill Lord Mictlan in his One-Winged Angel form, Maya ventures down one of his head's throats in order to reach his heart from the inside, pursued by the other head as Mictlan swallows in in the manner of an ouroboros to pursue Maya. In the cramped interior, Maya can no longer dodge or outrun his attacks, and is forced to block his flaming breath attack with Eagle Claw just as she reaches the heart, which shatters the weapon and pushes her to the brink of death. Recognising the impossibility of her survival, and that Mictlan will be truly unstoppable if he survives, Maya opts not to block Mictlan's next breath attack, but rather uses it as propulsion to push her towards his heart to stab it with the shattered remnants of Eagle Claw before the flames consume her.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Chimi. The girls grow to become as close as sisters with Maya calling her "hermana'' during the final battle. Chimi returns the sentiment by posthumously naming Maya her children's aunt.
  • Honorary Aunt: Posthumously, as Chimi refers to Maya/The Sun as this to her and Rico's children.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Maya (especially before Character Development) is a hot-headed, brash, arrogant girl who often speaks before she thinks. Even so, she is also brave, loyal, kind, and knows when she crosses a line.
  • Liar Revealed: During her recruitment of The Three, Maya lies about the nature of their mission statement that their goal was to destroy the gate connecting the Mortal World to Lord Mictlan's realm while in actuality they were meant to fight him. Zats obliviously reveals the truth to the others not knowing that Maya had been lying to them. This ends up being a Downplayed Trope because while the Three obviously feel betrayed by Maya's lie, they were still going to follow through on their promise given the life or death stakes. They later forgive Maya when they learn about the death of her brothers at Mictlan's hands.
  • Love at First Punch: While for Zatz it was Love at First Sight, Maya didn't start to warm up to him until they sparred together a couple times.
  • Meaningful Name: Gutierrez and Equihua named her Maya as it was a female name that could be found around the world. It could also be a nod to her Mesoamerican heritage.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Maya is on the receiving end of this as Lord Mictlan plans to sacrifice her for what was the fault of her father and Lady Micte. Lord Mictlan is ultimately successful in ending Maya's life, but she manages to go out as a hero and on her terms.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Maya is Semi-Divine from Lady Micte's side, but aside from being able to kill gods and heal from broken bones quickly (albeit painfully) and maybe enhanced strength Maya doesn't appear to have any supernatural powers.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: After Zatz crashes Maya's coronation to bring forth the prophesy the three tribes immediately pin the blame for the impending doom on Maya's head and turn their backs on Teca (as well as simply not seeing how they can further benefit themselves). Queen Teca tries to reason with them, saying that Teca would come to their aid in their time of need, only for a frustrated Maya to interrupt and claim that their assistance is mandatory. This wins her no points, and the tribes leave Teca to fend for itself.
  • Night and Day Duo: The brash, energetic day, to Zatz's night.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Maya is shown competing in a fight and is able to fight her much bigger opponent into a draw.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Rico. There's no romantic tension between but they love each other like siblings, with even Maya referring to him as "hermano" in the final episode. By all accounts this probably extends to Picchu, although he had died before Maya had the chance to call him that.
  • Rebellious Princess: Maya is a strong fighter who would rather live life as an Eagle Warrior as opposed to that of a cooped-up, "perfect" Princess Classic and even sneaks off to a fighting match in her first scene.
  • Semi-Divine: In the first episode, it’s revealed that she’s the daughter of a human (King Teca) and a goddess (Lady Micte). Interesting enough, aside from being the sole person that can kill gods Maya doesn't seem to have divine abilities aside from healing fast from broken bones, and even then they need to be painfully reset.
  • Shipper on Deck: She (with Zatz) give a verbal approvement when a romatic moment happens between Rico and Chimi.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": During the course of the series Maya breaks her arm no less than three times, always accompanied by this as well as an x-ray of the bones breaking.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Doesn't start to warm up to Zatz until she realizes he's a Noble Demon. Before that, she hated his guts.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Neither King Teca nor Lady Micte face severe consequences for their affair, instead Maya is the one facing being sacrificed and on plenty of occasions she's told that the entire situation is her fault.
  • Solar and Lunar: Upon her death, Maya is made to become one with the Sun while Zatz becomes her Moon.
  • Taking You with Me: Maya manages to destroy Lord Mictlan's heart before being incinerated by his last attack as well as the resulting explosion.
  • Together in Death: With Zatz, as they were both killed during the final battle. Their souls walk hand in hand as they greet their living comrades one last time, and for their bravery they became the Sun and Moon, dancing with each other around the earth for eternity. Maya is also briefly reunited with her brothers and Lady Micte herself before ascending.
  • Tomboy Princess: She even gripes about having to wear frilly dresses, especially since they are hard to walk in.
  • True Companions: After the trials and hurdles of their quest, she comes to view Rico, Chimi, and Picchu as these.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: When Maya sets out on her quest she believes everything will go smooth as butter with no fighting or opposition, but almost immediately she's facing foes and those she initially seeks help from turn their backs on her.
    • The same also applies a bit in her fights with Bear Killah and Acat. On both cases she expresses either admiration or a desire to become friends, but both are genuinely ruthless individuals that want nothing more than to splatter Maya across the ground (although the former could be somewhat forgiven since Maya might have thought Bear Killah was merely playing the heel character).

    Rico

Rico, the Rooster Wizard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rico_the_rooster_wizard.jpg
Voiced by: Allen Maldonado (English),Foreign V As

A nervous wizard from Luna Island. Considered to be an outcast in his home island, he was widely feared for his use of peasant magic, and was further ostracized when his misuse of it resulted in the death of his mentor, the Gran Brujo. Upon meeting Maya, he learns that he is the Rooster Wizard destined to assist in the defeat of Lord Mictlan.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Rico was ostracized by the children and adults alike in his community for being an orphan taken in by the Gran Brujo, his noticeable stutter, and being able to use peasant magic while being seemingly inept in the everyday kind they normally used. Their relentless bullying of him was what caused him to lose control of his peasant magic and accidentally kill the Gran Brujo, giving them reason to despise him even more.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the series’ art book, Gran Brujo was not only his mentor, but his grandfather. And Grand Bruja is his aunt.
  • Amazon Chaser: Rico loves Chimi's battle prowess. When he sees her effortlessly fighting her way through a horde of Lord Mictlan's goons, Rico practically swoons and declares that he "loves that girl."
  • The Apprentice: To the Gran Brujo, when he was alive.
  • Babies Ever After: The story ends with him having four kids (two sons and two daughters) with Chimi.
  • Barrier Warrior: In episode 4, Rico creates a magical force field to protect Chimi from Hura and Can.
  • Badass Boast: Claims that he is the greatest wizard to ever live, and by the end he might just be right.
  • Broken Ace: Rico is arguably the strongest character in the group thanks to his peasant magic but he's crippled with self-doubt and fear after accidentally killing his beloved mentor, Gran Brujo. By the final episode, however, he finally gets over his demons and pretty much single-handedly turns the tide on the fight against Mictlan's army.
  • Character Development: Rico starts off as a someone with zero self-esteem who thinks his peasant magic is dangerous, usually relying on Estefan for magical help. By the end, he has grown a healthy amount of self-confidence, sees the benefits of peasant magic, and can do magic without Estefan.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Rico suffers from a lack of self-confidence which hinders his powerful magic. He gradually overcomes it.
  • Con Man: When he first meets Maya, Rico pretends to be a one-legged homeless man in order to get money.
  • Covert Pervert: When Picchu offers Chimi to "ride Picchu" Rico immediately gives a "wait, what?!" reaction, making the quick assumption that Picchu meant something else than just a lift on his shoulders.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Part of the reason why he's an outcast is because peasant magic is viewed as one of these due to horrific experiences or unfamiliarity. While it does prove to be capable of severe damage, as shown by the death of the Gran Brujo, when controlled it's also capable of wonderful and powerful things. The greatest example is when Rico uses peasant magic to revive the Gran Bruja.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As a child, Rico was ostracized because he was both an orphan and used peasant magic. When he got overwhelmed with the teasing, he unleashed said magic which ended in the Gran Brujo's accidental death. The Gran Brujo's daughter, Gran Bruja, blamed the already grief-stricken Rico for the incident and banished him. Since then, he was living in poverty and his only companion being Estaban.
  • Empathic Weapon: The staff he carries, Estaban, is a sentient Magic Staff that also doubled as Rico's Only Friend for a long time.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: This is a prominent trope in general, but Rico in particular incorporates Spanish into all of his incantations.
  • Handicapped Badass: Downplayed. Rico has a noticeable stutter, but it doesn't stop him from casting powerful magic to defeat his enemies.
  • Homeless Hero: Prior to meeting Maya, Rico was an orphan taken in by the Gran Brujo. But after the latter's death, Rico was left in poverty and had to scrape by to eat.
  • Lovable Coward: Rico has a habit of trying to scoot out of uncomfortable situations before being pulled right back in. However, when the situation is dire his bravery and powers shines.
  • Love at First Sight: Falls for Chimi hard the moment he lays eyes on her, even calling her a miracle. She reacts the complete opposite...at first.
  • Magical Incantation: Per the norm for a wizard. Rico uses incantations to perform his magic.
  • Magic Staff: A given since he's a wizard. In a variance, his staff is an Empathic Weapon named Estaban.
  • Motor Mouth: Picchu even notes that Rico talks too much.
  • Noodle People: Rico has the lankiest build of his companions.
  • Obfuscating Disability: When he first meets Maya, Rico pretended to have lost a leg in order to get money.
  • Opposites Attract: Rico is the outgoing, Plucky Comic Relief to Chimi's antisocial, Aloof Archer. After getting to know one another more as well as some Character Deveolpment and Ship Tease (and one tragic case of Death Of The Hypotenus) they go on to receive a full Relationship Upgrade.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Maya. There's no romantic tension between but they love each other like siblings, with even Maya referring to him as "hermano" in the final episode.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Rico is one of the primary sources of comedy throughout the series.
  • Purple Is Powerful: The peasant magic emits a purple glow.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: When using peasant magic, Rico rhymes his Magical Incantations, sometimes doing it with Spanish words and phrases.
  • Shipper on Deck: He calls Maya and Zatz "adorbs" when they start flirting with each other, and teases them with a Kissing In A Tree parody tune when they argue about Maya's plan to fight Lord Mictlan.
  • Speech-Impeded Love Interest: Rico has a notable stutter and begins a romance/marriage/family with Chimi in the end.
  • Speech Impediment: Rico will occasionally slip into a minor stutter, which was another source of early bullying for him as the other children likened it to a rooster clucking.
  • Token Wizard: While the rest of their party are different flavors of Warrior, Rico's contribution is his Unskilled, but Strong magic.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Rico begins as a cowardly mage who lacks the confidence in using his magic. By the end, he has not only become braver and more self-confident but also more skilled in his peasant magic.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Estaban is an Empathic Weapon, that once belonged to his Parental Substitute, Gran Brujo.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Rico feels tremendous guilt for accidentally killing the Gran Brujo and part of the reason he goes on the quest with Maya was to make Gran Brujo proud. In the end, the spirit of his former teacher makes it clear that he is proud.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Rico mentions that he hates goats because goats ate his clothes when he was a young orphan boy. In episode 6, he has to fight Chivo, God of Dark Magic, who is goat-based, much to his dislike.

    Chimi

Chimi, the Skull Archer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chimi_skull_archer.jpg
Voiced by: Stephanie Beatriz (English),Foreign V As

A master archer from the Jungle Lands. Shunned from birth due to her albinism, Chimi grew up being feared by her community and became known as "El Monstruo Blanco". She's later discovered by Maya and Rico, who convince her to join their quest as the Skull Archer.

  • Albinos Are Freaks: Was unfortunately the victim of this from her own people after her mother passed away giving birth to her and, this being ancient Mexican times, people mistook her pale skin tone and red eyes as a sign that she was a cursed child.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Chimi was hated and fear by her village because of albinism.
  • Aloof Archer: A Master Archer with a cold disposition, especially towards humans. She gradually mellows out.
  • Animal Lover: As someone raised by animals she views them as her equals and is able to communicate with them. This is also what allows her to help Chiapa get over his trauma and gain the courage to fight.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Chimi gradually loses her distrust in humans due to her growing friendships with Maya, Rico, and Picchu.
  • Babies Ever After: The story ends with her having four kids (two sons and two daughters) with Rico.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Chimi has a deep hatred for humans despite being one herself.
  • Broken Bird: Chimi's life has not been an easy one and has taken quite a toll on her before meeting Maya and Rico.
  • Character Development: Chimi starts off as an antisocial, human-hating person who has a hard time being vulnerable with others. Her time with her friends, has Chimi not only learned that not every human is evil but also allows her to be more open with herself.
  • Covert Pervert: A serious and deadly archer who doesn't shy away from openly staring at Picchu's muscular body. She also seems to understand the alternative meaning of "riding" someone when both Rico and herself misinterprets Picchu's offer to "ride Picchu."
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her mother died in childbirth with her father nowhere to be found. The villagers saw her albinism as a curse and abandoned the then infant Chimi in the forest with her fate left up to the Gods. She was fortunately raised by caring animals, but was attacked by humans as a child when she only wanted to befriend them. And then she lost her animal family by the humans burning down their forest home.
  • Death by Childbirth: Her mother died shortly after her birth. Part of the reason she agrees to join Maya’s quest is so she can ask Lady Micte to introduce her to her mother, so she can apologize for causing her death.
  • Disappeared Dad: While she mentions her mother on plenty occasions Chimi never breathes a word of her father, nor is he alluded to or seen when Chimi meets he mother. It's implied that he simply abandoned her mother while she was pregnant.
  • Dude Magnet: Downplayed, but she has plenty of Ship Tease between both Rico and Picchu, with both men expressing their romantic interest in her.
  • Gene Hunting: A variant. Chimi wants to meet Lady Micte in order to speak to her mother's spirit. Chimi gets her wish.
  • Groin Attack: She dishes out one of these to Rico upon their first meeting when he tries flirting with her.
  • Handicapped Badass: Downplayed. Chimi has albinism but it hardly stops her from being a Master Archer warrior.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Maya. The girls grow to become as close as sisters with Maya calling her "hermana'' during the final battle. Chimi returns the sentiment by posthumously naming Maya her children's aunt.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Her stance on humanity at the beginning. Given her alienation from the people of her tribe because of albinism and how they killed her animal family, it's understandable. She grows out of it.
  • Howl of Sorrow: She gives off one of these when Maya dies.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: One of the gods refers to Chimi as an "it" with this trope fully in mind.
  • Love Triangle: Ends up as the target of one between Rico and Picchu, with Chimi herself showing affection and Ship Tease towards both of them at different points. In the end, in no short part due to Picchu pulling a Heroic Sacrifice, she ends up with Rico.
  • Master Archer: Chimi is an exceptional archer, quite possibly the greatest during her time, and wields a magical bow and arrow as her primary weapon.
  • Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: Chimi completely blames herself for her mother dying shortly after giving birth to her, calling it the greatest tragedy of both their lives. It's unknown if the Jungle Lands as a whole also viewed this, but all things considered it's highly likely. When Chimi finally gets to meet her mother, she puts her daughter's mind at ease by telling her she'd die a thousand times if it meant Chimi could live.
  • Noodle People: Not to the extent of Rico, but in comparison to the other female characters Chimi has a noticably thin build.
  • Opposites Attract: Chimi is the aloof, antisocial archer to Rico's outgoing, Plucky Comic Relief. After getting to know one another more as well as some Character Deveolpment and Ship Tease (and one tragic case of Death Of The Hypotenus) they go on to receive a full Relationship Upgrade.
  • Raised by Wolves: She was abandoned in the jungle as a baby due to her people believing she was cursed. She was raised by a monkey and many other animals of the jungle.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Dangerous, cold, and distrusting of humans as she (initially) is, Chimi couldn't be further from evil if she tried. Too bad the people of the Jungle Lands took this trope seriously instead of giving her a chance...
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man:
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Due to being raised by them Chimi is able to communicate with animals as if it were her native tongue. She'll even delve into animal speech on occasion by growling, barking, purring, and etc.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Chimi began as a sullen, angry warrior who rarely smiles. She ends the story more open and happier with her new friends and family.
  • Wild Child: She became this due to being abandoned in the woods and raised by wildlife, displaying animal qualities such as walking on all fours, sniffing people, and using animal speech.

    Picchu

Picchu, the Puma Warrior

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/picchu_barbarian_warrior.jpg
Voiced by: Gabriel Iglesias (English),Foreign V As

A brave barbarian warrior from the Golden Mountains. When his family was killed following a raid on his village, he retreated to the Cliffs of Regret to fight his pain. After meeting Maya and her friends, he joins their quest to defeat Lord Mictlan as the Puma Warrior.

  • The Big Guy: Picchu is without a doubt the strongest of the group when it comes to muscle. Fittingly, he is also physically the biggest member of the team.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: He is the biggest and strongest of the eponymous "three" and the only one of them to die, making a Heroic Sacrifice in episode 7.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: He's a brutish barbarian and his weapons of choice are a pair of large axes.
  • Carpet of Virility: An interesting case in that the hair on his chest is in the shape of a puma, the sign that the group has the right man.
  • Chick Magnet: Downplayed. Both Maya and Chimi appreciate his muscular figure but he only ends up being a friend with the former and enters into a Ship Tease Love Triangle with Rico over the latter. Which doesn't go anywhere as he pulls a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He lost his parents and entire village after showing mercy to an enemy, who promptly broke her promise to him.
  • Death of the Hypotenuse: The Love Triangle that was building between Picchu, Chimi and Rico comes to a screeching halt when Picchu prematurely sacrifices himself in episode 7. Chimi and Rico end up getting a Relationship Upgrade during the final episode.
  • Death Seeker: Averted. Given his story and his continuous mentioning of dying a heroic death the group asks if Picchu is trying to die in battle on purpose, possibly to invoke Suicide by Cop. He completely denies this, saying that he is simply prepared to sacrifice his life if it comes to that. This eventually happens.
  • Dual Wielding: Picchu uses two axes in combat.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Picchu's the Farmer to Xtabay's Viper. In fact, Xtabay even recites the famous "Scorpion and the Frog" fable when she gets into Picchu's head to make him believe her slaughtering of his people was his fault.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Picchu ends up pulling off a You Shall Not Pass! to allow his friends to escape the underworld. We do not see the immediate aftermath of the fight but in the next scene, Picchu is in the afterlife reuniting with his parents.
  • Hunk: Picchu is a very well built man and gets an epic moment of Mr. Fanservice when he gets ready to join the quest. Maya and Chimi waste no time Eating the Eye Candy.
  • It's All My Fault: During a raid Picchu spares Xtabay when she begs for mercy, and she repays his kindness by knocking him out and slaughtering his entire village, including his parents. She further manipulates him into believing their deaths were solely on his head because of "weakness", and until Maya and the others find him he's consumed by guilt to the point he spends his days fighting a hallucination of Xtabay in the mist.
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's usually fully dressed, but his bathing scene is clearly meant to highlight what an absolute Hunk the guy is. Maya and Chimi both proceed to soak it in.
  • My Greatest Failure: Picchu continues to blame the death of his family on himself due to Xtabay betraying him and killing them after he spared her.
  • Nice Guy: Picchu's second defining characteristics, after his ridiculous strength. He is kind to everyone around him, and he is defined by his mercy. All of Xtabay's taunting and provocations only manage to make him firmer in his belief that mercy is never a mistake but a strength.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Picchu's introduction shows him and his village fighting against Xtabay's forces. When he has her dead to rights he opts to spare her since he does not see her as a threat. She repays this kind by later ambushing them when she gains new troops and slaughtering every single one of them except for Picchu who she decides to spare because she doesn't believe he deserves a warrior's death.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Picchu is the first major character to die in the series, sacrificing himself to allow the others to escape from the underworld. His death also served as foreshadowing Maya had incorrectly interpreted Lady Micte's prophecy; "The Three" was not any one champion but the tribes themselves.
  • Together in Death: After his Heroic Sacrifice he's reunited with his family in what could be assumed as Heaven, but he does return to the mortal realm temporarily when Lady Micte summons him to help Maya.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The gold ornaments on top of his axes belonged to his late parents, and are the only thing he has left of them.
  • The Unchosen One: According to Word of God, Zatz not Picchu was the real Puma Warrior. Doesn't prevent Picchu from being a true hero.invoked

    Chiapa

Chiapa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chiapa.jpg
Voiced by: Dee Bradley Baker (English)

Maya's loyal jaguar companion.

  • All Animals Are Dogs: Though a jaguar— and a trained war beast at that— he acts like a playful house pet around Maya. He also licks Maya to show affection and whimpers like a dog when he's scared.
  • Cowardly Lion: Well a jaguar to be precise, but it's all but stated that Chiapa is suffering from PTSD after surviving the off-screen slaughter of Teca's army that resulted in the death of the Jaguar Triplets. Chiapa spends the majority of the series scared of engaging in any conflict and running at the first sign of danger. He finally gets over it by the end, partially thanks to Chimi's help.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: It's not outright states, but given the fact he witnesses a brutal slaughter, it's very likely he's suffering from PTSD.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Chiapa ends up becoming something of a Silent Snarker towards Rico.

Teca Kingdom

    King Teca

King Teca

Voiced by: Jorge Gutiérrez (English and Latin American Spanish)Foreign V As

The king of the Teca Kingdom, and Maya's father.

  • Action Dad: A skilled and experienced warrior who happens to be a father of four (later six) children.
  • Amazon Chaser: He appreciates Queen Teca's strength and skill in battle. And a (temporarily) human disguised Lady Micte managed to seduce him - she proved to be an equal warrior with him and the tension grew into something more.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: King Teca may be a friendly, lovable goofball, but he is also a very skilled fighter who will not think twice to jump into the face of danger, especially where his family is concerned.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: King Teca is a loud, Large Ham who enjoys battle and glory. During battle, he remains really loud and expressive.
  • Handicapped Badass: By the end of the story, King Teca has lost an arm and walks with a limp. He still fought in a war against the Gods and took out plenty of enemies, all with the same injuries
  • Happily Married: With Queen Teca. It's evident that while she was hurt by the betrayal, they love each other dearly and have many sweet moments together.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He's practically a giant compared to his slim wife.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: He's the near spitting image of creator Jorge Gutiérrez who voices him.
  • Large and in Charge: He is the largest human in the kingdom being about the size of a truck, and the king.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: The Jaguar Triplets are killed when they, himself, and the Teca Army attempt to face Lord Mictlan. At the end, this is also the case with Maya as she pulls a Heroic Sacrifice killing Mictlan for good.
  • Papa Wolf: He's willing to go to war with the Gods to protect Maya.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: King Teca's not a Blood Knight per say, but the man absolutely adores being on the battlefield. This does take something of a hit after Lord Mictlan slaughters his army as well as his sons, but it doesn't kill his fighting spirit.
  • Sole Survivor: Thanks to Chiapa, King Teca manages to survive the off-screen slaughter of the Teca army. Something that his sons couldn't.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: While King Teca does get dipped into hot waters when the subject comes up and received at least one stab wound from his wife, he is never demonized for his infidelity.
    • Given the little information given on his and Lady Micte's relationship it could be possible that he knew of her Awful Wedded Life and felt pity, but since he didn't seem to know who Lady Micte was on the night in question and was intrigued rather quickly by her battle prowess and true form it's possible it really was just a one-night stand.
    • Then again, the reason Lady Micte seduced him was that she wanted to conceive a child that she could sacrifice for a power up, although giving birth to Maya made her change her mind.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Not to the extent of Mictlan and Micte, but admittedly the Queen is a couple leagues above the King.

The queen of the Teca Kingdom, Maya's stepmother, and former Eagle Warrior.

  • Action Mom: She was the one to teach Maya how to fight and she hasn't lost her edge. Even while pregnant. Bonus awesome points for getting back into battle immediately after birthing twins.
  • Easily Forgiven: She doesn't seem to hold it against Lady Micte for seducing her husband and dumping their bastard child in her care. That said, she immediately accepted Maya as her own and she recognizes that Micte isn't a villain like her husband (not that she could say or do anything to the Goddess of Death if she tried).
  • Good Stepmother: Maya is not Queen Teca's blood daughter, being the product of her husband's infidelity. Nevertheless, Queen Teca never held this against Maya as she viewed her as a fully innocent party, and from the moment she laid eyes on the child Queen Teca completely melted and accepted Maya as her own.
  • Happily Married: With King Teca. It's evident that while she was hurt by the betrayal, they love each other dearly and have many sweet moments together.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She is slim and of normal build while her husband is twice her size.
  • Mama Bear: Like her husband, she's ready to fight the Gods to protect Maya.
  • Maternity Crisis: She gives birth to Eagle and Jaguar during the final battle, complete with Screaming Birth.
  • Only Sane Woman: She has quite the fighting spirit like the rest of her family, but she tends to show more caution and diplomacy and tries to rear Maya into acting similarly.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: The Jaguar Triplets are killed when they, King Teca, and the Teca Army attempt to face Lord Mictlan. At the end, this is also the case with Maya, her daughter by adoption, as Maya pulls a Heroic Sacrifice killing Mictlan for good.
  • Pregnant Badass: A little pregnancy with twins isn't going to stop this warrior woman from joining a battle, at least until Maternity Crisis kicks in. She admits this isn't the first time, and that time was with triplets.
  • Shipper on Deck: When Maya and Zatz kiss before the final battle begins, Teca looks very happy for her stepdaughter.
  • Wacky Cravings: She craved goat stew and sweet ants while pregnant with twins.
  • Woman Scorned: Downplayed compared to many examples. Queen Teca eventually forgave her husband for his betrayal and is very much in love with him, but she does admit to stabbing him when she found out. She also doesn't hold a grudge against Lady Micte, and not just because she's a goddess.

    The Jaguar Triplets

Dagger, Shield, and Lance

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jaguar_triplets.jpg
Voiced by: Gael García Bernal (English and Latin American Spanish)Foreign V As

Maya's three older brothers.

  • Big Brother Instinct: Perhaps their most defining character trait is their love for their little sister, Maya. Unlike their parents, they truly support Maya in wanting to become a warrior. Their deaths are what makes Maya wanting to fulfill her destiny so personal.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The brothers can mainly be told apart by the color of their facepaint: Lance (green), Dagger (blue), and Shield (brown).
  • Cool Big Bro: Not only are they protective of Maya but they also went on epic and dangerous adventures to give her gifts for her 15th birthday. And they help her out when she wants to sneak off somewhere.
  • Idiot Hero: While the three are certainly accomplished warriors, off of the battlefield, they get their intelligence from their father and have moments of being quite Literal-Minded, and even get their own names mixed up. Still, they are undoubtedly noble and goodhearted young men who were willing to die to protect their people and their sister.
  • Meaningful Name: Their names reflect on their weapon choices. Dagger uses daggers, Shield uses a shield, and Lance uses a lance.

  • Sacrificial Lamb: Very early on they and their father try to face Mictlan under the belief that they are the true warriors from the prophecy. This proves to be incorrect, and they die as a result.
  • Single-Minded Twins: Triplets in this case as they work together as a single unit and finish each others' sentences.

Luna Island

    In General

    Gran Bruja
Voiced by: Queen Latifah (English)Foreign V As
A powerful witch who is the leader of Luna Island.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the series’ art book, she is Rico’s aunt.
  • Daddy's Girl: Deconstructed. She was very close to her father and when a young Rico accidentally killed him, she angrily banished him to the slums.
  • Gag Nose: She has an incredibly large and bumpy nose as long as her entire body. She wraps it around Maya in one scene and later uses it to slap Chivo in the face.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Along with the whole "orphan capable of peasant magic" thing, the Gran Bruja's jealousy of the attention her father gave Rico seems to have been the foundation of her resentment towards the boy. This comes to a head when Rico accidentally kills her father as well as her father giving Estavan to Rico instead of her, resulting in Rico's exile.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She starts off being an utter Jerkass, exiling the child Rico against her father's wishes and refusing to help Maya because she doesn't see how she could benefit from it. However, at the end she joins the fight, and she and Rico make amends when he saves her life with peasant magic.
  • You Killed My Father: Rico accidentally killed her father, and she exiles him for it, even when her father told the both of them to look after each other.

Jungle Lands

    In General

    Widow Queen
Voiced by: Isabela Merced (English)Foreign V As
The small Queen of the Jungle Lands.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Is a fairly competent ruler for her young age, seeming to balance her reign with a surprisingly balanced professionalism and childish whimsy.
  • Berserk Button: Doesn't take too kindly to Rico talking down to her and threatens to feed him to her hyenas for it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: The Widow Queen is a polite, mild-mannered child and Reasonable Authority Figure. That being said, she also threatens to feed Rico to hyenas when he patronizes her, and doesn't think twice about ordering her archers to attack Xtabay when the goddess's illusions fail to fool her.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Only referred to as "The Widow Queen" with her real name never given.
  • Informed Attribute: It is stated that men around her tend to die, but none of this is shown to the audience.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She has a conversation with Maya and Rico, and wanted to make peace with Chimi to atone for what her father did.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She is a small child, but the ruler of the Kingdom and fairly competent.

Golden Mountain Barbarians

    In General

Gods

    In General
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Eating the heart of one God can give another god a powerboost. Mictlan does this to any god under him who fails him, he does this to his remaining allies during the final battle to achieve his One-Winged Angel form and the crux of the series is that eating a half-god's heart (especially one to a god of death) will make him all powerful, with various other gods trying to do the same so that they could usurp him.
  • Decadent Court: They are introduced this way, feasting gluttonously on a large table with Lord Mictlan at the center.
    • Special mention goes to Bone and Skull sipping out of what could potentially be booze as well as Acat's eyes looking suspiciously like she's high.
  • Dwindling Party: By the end of the series ALL of them except Ah Puch end up dead. Acat is killed by Mictlan for her failure, Skull is (accidentally) killed by Maya, and then Mictlan kills Camazots when he is first confronted by Maya. In the final battle he kills Cipactli, Cabrakan and Vucub for turning against him, kills his own allies (Chivo, Xtabay, Bone, Hura and Can) to gain power. Mictlan then kills Lady Micte and Zatz before being done in by Maya.
  • Incoming Ham: Most of them pompously and dramatically introduce themselves with: "I am [X], God(ess) of [Y]!"
  • Jerkass Gods: A whole pantheon of them leaded by Lord Mictlan, and jerkass would be putting it lightly... Even the nicer gods like Cabrakan, Vacub and Lady Micte started off rather vicious.
  • Physical God: All of them have a physical form.
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: Their outfits incorporate a lot of bones (mostly skulls). Special mention goes to Mictlan and Micte, who have two entire skeletons each hanging from their shoulders and headdress respectively.
  • The Starscream: Lord Mictlan is a hated figure who only maintains his leadership through violence and fear, to the point that almost all of his underlings want to overthrow him, either because they think he's a monster who needs to be stopped (Camazotz, Cabrakan, Cipactli, Vucub, Micte) or because they selfishly want to seize power for themselves (Hura and Can, Bone and Skull).
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Most follow Mictlan out of fear and would rather usurp him. They all work together despite not liking each other very much.
  • Would Hurt a Child: None of them pull any punches on Maya and her allies, who are all teenagers, in battle, and most of them are very blatant in their plans to sacrifice Maya and consume her power for themselves.

    Lord Mictlan

Lord Mictlan, God of the Underworld, Dead, and War

Click here to see his two-headed snake form.

Voiced by: Alfred Molina (English), Joaquín Cosío (Latin American Spanish)Foreign V As

The bloodthirsty God of War and leader of the gods. A twisted and sadistic tyrant, he plans to sacrifice Maya to gain ultimate power.

  • 0% Approval Rating: Everyone in his pantheon, including his own wife, seems to want to off him for their own gain.
  • Affair? Blame the Bastard: The primary driver of the series is Lord Mictlan's intent to sacrifice Maya, an innocent girl, partly so that he can become more powerful but mostly because she's the product of the affair between Lady Micte and King Teca.
  • And Show It to You: He has a habit of doing this to gods that fail or betray him.
  • Animal Motif: Snakes. He uses them as spies, summons magical snakes to bind Zatz, has serpent designs on his shoulders, and his One-Winged Angel form is a gigantic two-headed snake. One of the first things shown in the show is an eagle killing a snake, eagles being associated with Maya.
  • Ax-Crazy: Evidenced by his entries...yes.
  • Bad Boss: He rules his pantheon through fear and brutality and isn't above killing them and eating their hearts if they fail him. Or if he just needs a convenient power boost, doing just that to his remaining gods in the climax. It's pretty telling that, with the exception of Chivo and Acat, everyone in his court is only waiting for the chance to overthrow him although Lady Micte and Camazotz, and later Vucub, aren't doing it for power, but because they see how dangerous Lord Mictlan is and that he has to be stopped.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He manages to kill Maya at the end, but she winds up killing him as well.
  • Berserk Button: While he deserves the name, do not call him a monster. He is the God of war and will be addressed a such.
  • Big Bad: It is Lord Mictlan who leads the evil gods' plan to destroy humanity starting with Maya's death, spearheaded by his anger from the affair as well as his lust for power.
  • Blood Knight: As the god of war, Lord Mictlan absolutely revels in killing as many humans and gods as he can. He leaves the series with easily the biggest body count, leaving the number of major characters left alive countable on one hand with Maya not among them.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Eats the hearts of his fellow gods to increase his power.
  • Composite Character: His mythological counterpart Mictlantecuhtli had no association with war - the official artbook confirms that he is a combination of Mictlantecuhtli and the Mayan war god Buluc-Chabtan.
  • Cruel Mercy: Lady Micte manages to convince him to allow Maya to live under the reasoning that if she is older the power her sacrifice will give him will will be be greater than if she were still an infant. He also agrees to let King Teca raise his blood daughter because seeing her die will be that much more painful.
    • It could also be possible that Lord Mictlan also invoked this on Lady Micte herself: He never hurts her nor disgraces her for the affair, but he does make it clear Micte will not play a role in Maya's life (as well as, well, guaranteeing that he intends to murder her daughter) which hurts the goddess immensely. However, this is only if he didn't buy Lady Micte's act.
  • Devour the Dragon: He murders all the remaining gods on his side and eats their hearts in order to absorb their power and give himself a final boost.
  • The Dreaded: Everyone, god or mortal, is afraid of Lord Mictlan. The very first episodes shows three warrior tribes chosing to hide and flee rather than face him, and everyone in his court lives knowing that he might take their lives at a moment's whim. Even better-intentioned gods like Camazotz and Cabrakan are initially intending to sacrifice Maya not because they want to but because they are just that desperate to find a way to stop Lord Mictlan. When we finally see him in action, he fully justifies this reputation.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Mictlan has this reaction when Lady Micte, his own wife, turns on him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He seems genuinely put out when Lacy Micte decides to fight against him. This doesn't stop him from continuing his campaign.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Lord Mictlan is a God of the Dead, and quite possibly one of the most evil depictions of one to exist in media.
    • This trope is also played straight in that Mictlantecuhtli, the god Lord Mictlan is based on, does play some antagonistic roles in Aztec mythology but not to the extent of Lord Mictlan himself.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Mictlan seems genuinely confused that Micte turned against him to protect Maya and pleaded to him to end his violent ambitions. He rejects her pleas and carries on with his massacre.
  • Evil Overlord: He's the ruler of the Underworld, and yeah, he's quite evil.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Mictlan can use a surprisingly polite tone of voice at times. It's all an act, though, and he's an Ax-Crazy sadist who'll even sacrifice his minions if it means he gets to win.
  • God of the Dead: Mictlan rules the Underworld and is the God of Death. He is also shown to be able to raise skeletal warriors for battle as a result.
  • Hero Killer: Within the first two episodes he shows he's no joke by slaughtering the entire Teca Army save for the king (including his triplet sons). He will go on to also claim the lives of Picchu, Zatz, Lady Micte, the gods who turned on him (along with the gods who didn't), and finally Maya herself. And those are just the named characters...
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Maya tricks one of his snake heads into going into the mouth of the other, and later propelling her to stab his heart.
  • I Control My Minions Through...: Fear. Being a war god and fearmongerer, his entire pantheon is at his mercy, and they are all too afraid to challenge him, dealing either pain or death if any of them fail him.
  • Karmic Death: He greatly enjoys removing the eyes of his underlings (Zatz, Vucub). Fitting Maya and her friends obliterate his eyes, leading to the events that culminate in his death.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Oh yes. Whenever Mictlan pulls up on the scene, the lightheartedness makes a b-line to the nearest exit.
  • Licking the Blade: He does this in anticipation for sacrificing Maya.
  • Mind Control: He is able to take control of a victim's mind and bend them to his will. He first does this with the Teca Army, making them slaughter the Jaguar Triplets and then themselves, and then he does this to Maya's companions in an attempt to kill her before Rico snaps them out of it with peasant magic.
  • Never My Fault: After he kills all the gods loyal to him, he blames it on his wife for turning against him.
  • One-Winged Angel: After consuming the souls and absorbing the powers of all the other gods (except Lady Micte), he turns into his final, most powerful form; a giant, fire breathing, two-headed snake.
  • Orcus on His Throne: For the first half of the series, he mostly sends underlings to try to capture Maya. He gets more proactive as the series goes on.
  • Pet the Dog: When Micte turns against him in the finale, he isn’t angry, but visibly hurt by the revelation and genuinely doesn’t seem to understand why his wife would do this.Unfortunately, this vulnerable moment is quickly undercut by Mictlan refusing Micte's pleas to end his violent ways for her, ultimately resulting in both of their demises.
  • Redemption Rejection: When he realizes his wife has turned against him he is genuinely shocked and hurt, and pleads that he loves her. She tells him that if he truly loved her he would stand down. Mictlan decides his lust for power is more important than the love he had for her and refuses.
  • Satanic Archetype: Evil deity who is the head hauncho of other evil-aligning deities? Check. Rules in what looks like a Hell-like domain? Check. Lusts for the destruction of mankind, or at the very least revels in its slaughter and suffering? Check and check. To top it off, Lord Mictlan takes the form of a snake during the final battle.
  • Sadist: Part of the reason why he initially spares Maya's life is that by allowing her to live for a while he'd be causing more pain to her as well as her family. He also enjoys his killings of numerous characters way more than a being should, and Lady Micte commends him on his cruelty to which he happily accepts.
    • He also takes great amusement when Xtabay pretends to be some of his former victims cowering in fear.
  • Shoulders of Doom: His shoulder armor incorporates gigantic serpent/dragon heads with two full skeletons hanging from them like gallows.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: He uses snakes as his spies as well as having the ability to conjure magical snakes. In the final battle he transforms into a massive two-headed snake.
  • The Sociopath: Absolutely. Lord Mictlan is a being completely devoid of empathy who is willing to do anything to keep himself in power, including murdering an innocent girl, and only receives pleasure from the slaughtering and suffering that he causes. The sole exception to this appears to be Lady Micte, who he did love to a degree, but even then it's clear that her personal happiness means nothing to him.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Briefly on the receiving end when he finds out Micte betrayed him. He is genuinely hurt by this, and Micte and Maya's faces show him some pity.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Lady Micte turns on him for good during the final battle. Despite him proclaiming his love for her, he kills her along with nearly everyone else.
  • Top God: He serves as the "King of the Gods" variety, retaining his position solely through his own strength and power, with most of his subordinates wishing to usurp him and take his place.
  • Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil: Mictlan kills his currently loyal subordinates to absorb their power. Chivo is saddened at this, and Lady Micte calls him a monster even though his victims were her enemies.
  • Two-Faced: His face is composed of a split skull that is red on one side and purple on the other. They can even split apart to create two separate heads.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: He is a hulking monstrosity while his wife looks like an attractive woman with skull face paint.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Seems to have this with his wife, who often encourages his viciousness. It's just an act on her part.
  • War God: Mictlan is the God of War and a psychotic Blood Knight who enjoys bloodshed and violence.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He kills as many female characters as he does male ones.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Lord Mictlan wants to kill the teenage protagonist to achieve power. He succeeds, and to make matters worse he would've killed her as an infant if Lady Micte hadn't intervened.
    • He tore out Zatz's eye when the latter was only a child. And as a teenager, Zatz is also a member of Lord Mictlan's body count.
    • Don't forget about Acat.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: When Maya confronts him in the realm of the gods, he asks her this regarding her brothers. He then reveals he brainwashed the other Teca Warriors into killing them.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once a god proves to be no more use to him, starting with Acat, Lord Mictlan kills them then consumes their soul to absorb their power for himself. Eventually, he ends up doing this to every single god (sans Lady Micte) regardless of their loyalty so that he can assume his final and most powerful form.

    Lady Micte

Lady Micte, Goddess of Death

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ntfx_maya3_ladymicte_print_eng.png
Voiced by: Kate del Castillo (English and Latin American Spanish)Foreign V As

The Goddess of Death and consort to Lord Mictlan. She is Maya's true birth mother.

  • Animorphism: Along with human disguises Lady Micte can also turn into animals, most notably a giant owl which she uses to rescue Maya and co. from the Underworld and later in the final battle against Lord Mictlan.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Lady Micte once wanted nothing more than to consume power, and it was this desire that led to her giving her hand in marriage to Lord Mictlan. She eventually realizes this was a mistake as Lord Mictlan proved to be a much bigger monster than she had anticipated.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Or Mommy in this case. Upon her birth Lord Mictlan was getting ready to sacrifice Maya until Lady Micte, who was going to kill Maya herself but grew to genuinely love her daughter, convinced him to let her grow older to gain power as well as to further cause pain to the Tecas. He complies, makes it very clear that Micte would have no role in the girl's life, and after tearfully cradling her Micte sends Maya to King and Queen Teca. Micte does manage to secretly visit Maya on occasion, and she is remorseful for abandoning her daughter.
  • The Death of Death: She is a goddess of death, but even she admits to Maya that she's not immortal as she lays dying from her injuries. However, dying doesn't stop her from summoning the souls of the Jaguar Triplets and Picchu to help Maya defeat Mictlan.
  • Easily Forgiven: To an extent. Ever since she finds out about her true heritage Maya is resentful and hateful of Micte, views her fully as a monster, and tells Micte not to call Maya her daughter. However, when Micte begins to actively protect Maya and reveals the full truth Maya forgives and accepts Micte as her second mother.
  • God in Human Form: Micte takes the form of a human when she and King Teca are sparring with other warriors and then each other, but she reverts back before things become more...intimate. She also dons multiple human disguises when she would secretly visit Maya on her birthdays.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By her own admission, Lady Micte was once a power-hungry goddess who probably committed many terrible actions during her time and even conceived a half-human, half-god child for purposes of becoming her sacrifice. However, when Maya was born Lady Micte immediately fell in love and found a way to temporarily spare her life, and eventually she would become a full-fledged Mama Bear and die fighting alongside her daughter.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: It’s revealed in the first episode that she is Maya’s biological mother.
  • Mal Mariée: Slightly muddied due to them both being immortal deities, but Micte looks to be considerably younger than Mictlan, and the unhappy marriage led to her fling with King Teca which in turn resulted in Maya's conception. However, this is played with in that the fling was less of genuine romantic attraction in King Teca and more to conceive a sacrifice.
  • Mama Bear: Lady Micte is revealed to be this for Maya - willing to do whatever it takes to protect her.
  • Marriage of Convenience: Lady Micte confesses that when she was younger she was hungry for power and willing to do anything for it, thus leading to her marrying the mightiest and fiercest of the gods. It's all but stated that she never truly loved him, especially when time showed just how evil he is.
  • Necromancer: As the goddess of death it would make sense for her to be able to summon souls at her command, which she does when she brings the Jaguar Triplets and Picchu to help Maya in defeating Lord Mictlan. Bonus points for herself already having been killed at the time.
  • Offing the Offspring: Lady Micte shows little concern over Lord Mictlan killing her daughter. Subverted, in that while she originally did intend to kill Maya for power she couldn't go through with it. She instead sends Maya to King and Queen Teca to be safe until she got older.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Sports a pair of these and is introduced as supporting Lord Mictlan's plan to destroy humanity as well as to kill the daughter she birthed. Ultimately downplayed in that she loves Maya and fully turns on her husband, but even she admits her past is quite tainted.
  • Stepford Smiler: Lady Micte goes along with everything that her husband suggests without argument, including killing the daughter she gave birth to and even commending him for his cruelty. This turns out to be an act as in reality she's repulsed by the lows her husband is willing to go and is genuinely hurt by his plans for her daughter, but she maintains it since she knows it's the only way to remain in her husband's good graces until she turns on him for good.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Like King Teca, while she doesn't get off the hook completely Lady Micte is never shunned for her affair, to the point that Queen Teca only treats her with respect and even Lord Mictlan seems to forgive her (albeit with much more nefarious reasoning). With that said she does lose sympathy points since part of the reason she cheated was so she could purposefully conceive a Half-Human Hybrid that she could sacrifice for herself, but even that appears to have been a choice made in light of seeing just how evil Lord Mictlan is and genuinely believing he would eventually turn on her, not to mention when Maya was born Micte couldn't go through with it.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: She is ultimately killed by Lord Mictlan during the final battle.
  • Yes-Man: For at least 15 years Lady Micte played the role of Lord Mictlan's cheerleader, showing enthusiasm for his heinous plans and hailing him for his endless cruelty. This turns out to have been an act as in reality she saw him as a tyrant utterly drunk on power but knew she needed to play this role if she wanted to live.

    Camazotz

Camazotz, God of Bats

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ntfx_maya3_camazotz_print_eng.png
Voiced by: Joaquín Cosío (English), Ricardo Brust (Latin American Spanish)Foreign V As

The God of Bats, Lord Mictlan's top general, and Zatz's father. Unlike his boss, Camazotz believes that trying to sacrifice Maya is a terrible idea, and silently supports her mission to defeat the bloodthirsty war god.

  • Adaptational Heroism: His mythological counterpart played a more villainous role, but here he is shown to be one of the more honorable gods but still has to kneel to Mictlan's will. Camazotz eventually rebels against Mictlan, but he is quickly executed. In front of an incapacitated Zatz, no less.
  • Delinquent Hair: Has a mohawk.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: A rare inversion: in Mayan mythology Camazotz was a legitimately evil death god, but his depiction here is that of a decent person who only serves an evil master out of fear for himself and his son.
  • Good Parents: Tries to be one to his son Zatz.
  • Interspecies Romance: Camazotz is a bat-based god while his deceased wife was a mortal.
  • The Lost Lenore: His mortal wife Zyanya is this for him, having sacrificed her life when they and an infant Zatz were being pursued by an unknown enemy.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Camazotz means "death bat" in the Kʼicheʼ language.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: He serves as Lord Mictlan's general, but unlike his boss he has no ill will towards humanity and is clearly disturbed by Mictlan's psychotic behaviour. He ultimately snaps and tries to attack Mictlan, but is swiftly killed for his efforts.
  • Together in Death: Is reunited with his beloved Zyanya in death.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the first god shown to dislike Mictlan's brutal rule. His son Zatz is also shown disobeying Mictlan's orders when he finds them dishonorable, although without directly rebelling, hinting early on that they only follow Mictlan out of fear. When Camazotz is executed the swamp gods, Vucub, and Lady Micte take on this role.

    Zatz

Zatz, the Prince of Bats

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zatz_prince_of_the_bats_2.png

Voiced by: Diego Luna (English and Latin American Spanish),Foreign V As

An emissary of Lord Mictlan and the son of Camazotz. While he was initially tasked to bring Maya to be sacrificed, he instead quickly falls for her and vows to join her quest to destroy Lord Mitclan.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Maya calls him "mi príncipe", which is Spanish for "my prince."
  • Amazon Chaser: Part of the reason he falls for Maya so quickly is because of her fighting spirit. This increases when they battle each other.
  • Animal Motifs: Bats, as he is the prince of them. His name rhymes with bats and his father is the God of Bats. The purple markings on his chin resemble the fangs of a bat. He can turn into a swarm of bats as well as a giant one when needed for battle. His soul also takes the form of a bat when he becomes one with the Moon.
  • Animorphism: He can turn into a swarm of bats or one large bat.
  • Berserk Button: Due to his calm nature, very little enraged him… well except for folks fighting dirty, which was the reason why he broke up with Acat.
  • Big Fancy Sword: Like Maya, Zatz wields a large, green and black macuahuitl.
  • Birds of a Feather: He and Maya bond over being Semi-Divine children of a god and a mortal outcasts who don't fit in either the mortal nor divine realm, as well as being honorable warriors who love to spar. They also each have a Big Fancy Sword and large feline mount.
  • Catchphrase: “Be well, Princess Maya. I will see you soon.”
  • Chick Magnet: Maya, Acat, Chimi, and the Princess of the Puma tribe have all shown or been stated to have an interest in Zatz to varying degrees.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Like how Maya is associated with the sun, he is associated with the moon. Used to symbolize his relationship with Maya. Also used to foreshadow his death and how he becomes the moon.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He lost his mother as an infant, had his eye pulled out by Lord Mictlan when he was still an infant or toddler, and had to serve under said tyrant with his father under fear of death.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Zatz is an underworld god with black clothes and gothic aesthetics, but he is pretty noble.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: He tells Maya he loves her right before Mictlan kills him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As far as Zatz was concerned his and Acat's relationship was on life support when they were introduced, but Acat's underhanded tactics and bloodthirsty mindset during battle was what led to him breaking up with her for good.
  • Eye Scream: Zatz had his eye pulled out by Lord Mictlan when he was only a child.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears a black eyepatch over where his left eye would be.
  • God of the Moon: Becomes the moon after dying.
  • Guyliner: Rocks this look with the rest of his gothic attire, even incorporating what looks like extended eyelashes.
  • Has a Type: Acat and Maya are both Hot-Blooded Action Girls with Hartman Hips. (Though how much, if ever, he cared about Acat is left up to interpretation.)
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Zatz dies fighting against Lord Mictlan to protect Maya.
  • In Love with the Mark: Initially Zatz is sent along with Acat to bring Maya back to Lord Mictlan to be sacrificed, but by then he had already fallen in love and stops Acat from defeating Maya.
  • Longhaired Pretty Boy: A tall, slender Chick Magnet with hair reaching his shoulders.
  • Love at First Sight: Pretty much fell for Maya the moment he sees her when he crashes her coronation, calling her beautiful and admiring her spirit. Unfortunately, he hadn't broken up with Acat at the time, which in turn contributed to the already bloodthirsty Acat's antagonism towards Maya. (Though it's also implied that he fell for her when he first laid eyes on her when he was a toddler, and she a baby.)
  • Night and Day Duo: The calm and honorable night to Maya's sun.
  • Noble Demon: It's shown that he could have curbstomped Maya's brothers and father, kidnapping her in front of the Teca army, and the show would have ended in episode one. Zatz refuses to do that after incapacitating her brothers because her father lost a hand fighting the stone mechas, and he doesn't hurt warriors that are badly injured. The only horse he has in this race is avoiding Mitclan's wrath, and he tries to warn the Teca that surrendering Maya is the pragmatic decision for everyone involved. What's more, he makes sure to return her brothers' weapons when they fall in battle, apologizing to Maya because they fought bravely to protect her. It's revealed that Zatz actually has no loyalty to Mitclan, only following him out of fear because the latter could wipe him and his father out. He believes that Maya should have a fighting chance, as a fellow demigod, and allows her to continue her journey unimpeded when Acat tries to murder her outright.
  • Not So Above It All: While he's typically very formal and composed, Zatz has several moments where his stonefaced facade cracks ever so slightly. He sports a rather pleased smirk when watching Maya and Acat fight, cheers incredibly loudly for Maya when she wins, and playfully teases her when she clings to the rope he threw to her despite her refusal. Not to mention his incredibly goofy behavior when describing Maya to his father, acting more like a smitten teenage boy than a gothic prince of darkness.
  • Not So Stoic: Again, he can be a stoic, calm, composed but honorable kind of Demi god, but there are times he can lose his cool with either anger, passion, and fear.
  • Perky Goth: Suiting for a bat-themed character he dons a dark aesthetic down to a skeletal steed, but he has a playful and romantic side when it comes to Maya.
  • Romantic Vampire Boy: While not technically being a vampire, being a pale White-Haired Pretty Boy with fangs and red eyes who can turn into a bat, he's one in all but name (Picchu actually mockingly calls him "el vampiro guapo" at one point). He also happens to end up as the Love Interest of the main character.
  • Semi-Divine: He’s the son of the God of Bats and a mortal woman.
  • Shipper on Deck: He (with Maya) give a verbal approvement when a romatic moment happens between Rico and Chimi.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Downplayed. He seems to have eyes only for Maya from the moment he meets her, and a late series flashback implies that he's been smitten with her ever since he first saw her when he was a toddler, and she an infant.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Gender-inverted. Another reason for Zatz's attraction to Maya is because of her being a brave and honorable warrior. And a major factor in him breaking up with Acat is because of her being bloodthirsty and using underhanded tactics, both traits he disapproves of.
  • Solar and Lunar: Upon his death, Zatz is made to become one with the Moon while Maya becomes his Sun.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Of the emotional variety. Zatz quickly develops feelings for Maya despite already being in a relationship with Acat. However, he doesn't actually start flirting and romancing Maya until after he breaks up with Acat. Plus, it was already implied that their relationship was on a downhill spiral before Maya was introduced.
  • Together in Death: With Maya, as they were both killed during the final battle. Their souls walk hand in hand as they greet their living comrades one last time, and for their bravery they became the Sun and Moon, dancing with each other around the earth for eternity. Zatz also reunites with his mother who had died saving him as well as his father before ascending.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Zatz kept his mother's bracelet with him ever since the night she sacrificed herself for him and his father.
  • Uptight Loves Wild: Downplayed. He's very cool and reserved, while Maya is very brash and head-strong. His admiration for her defiance and fiery spirit is implied to be a huge part of that attraction. They're both fierce warriors who love to battle, though.
  • White-Haired Pretty Boy: Physically Zatz fits the trope to a T as he has white hair and is very pretty, but in reality he has a kind and noble heart. Maya at first believes the trope is in full affect until he eventually earns her trust and love.
  • You Killed My Father: Zatz was already willing to betray and fight Lord Mictlan but his desire only grew after the latter killed his father.

    Acat

Acat, Goddess of Tattoos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ntfx_maya3_acat_print_eng.png
Voiced by: Chelsea Rendon (English),Foreign V As

The powerful warrior Goddess of Tattoos, and Lord Mitclan's top assassin. She's one of the first gods to be tasked with capturing Maya to prepare her for sacrifice.

  • Advertised Extra: Before the series was revealed Acat was one of the more heavily promoted characters, further making her being the first notable antagonist to be killed more of a shock.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite being nothing but a vengeful jerk to Maya when they first meet and getting dumped by Zatz for her, she still refuses to reveal his location to Lord Mictlan, an act that ends up costing her her life.
  • Bigot with a Crush: She makes snide comments towards Maya for being a "half-breed" but is dating Zatz who is also half-human.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: It’s heavily implied that a lot of her animosity towards Maya is out of her own jealousy towards Zatz’s growing feelings towards her. When Zatz declares her dishonorable and breaks up with her right when she has Maya on the ropes, she leaves the battle immediately in tears.
  • Dark Action Girl: Acat is a very bloodthirsty girl who can give Maya a run for her money.
  • Defiant to the End: When she realizes that Lord Mitclan intends to execute her, Acat immediately draws her weapons and furiously charges at the war god, cursing at him that he'll regret it. Unfortunately, she doesn't get very far before she's killed.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Despite Zatz dumping her for Maya, she declares her love for him with her last breath as Mictlan kills her.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She's a ruthless and sadistic killer, but she genuinely loves Zatz with all her heart. To the point that she refuses to disclose his location or treachery to Mictlan, and gives a Dying Declaration of Love.
  • Exact Words: After failing to bring Maya to Lord Mictlan, Acat avoids revealing Zatz's desertion by claiming that they're not together and she doesn't know where he is, which is technically true. Lord Mitclan lampshades this trope, stating that that's not what Lady Micte asked of her.
  • Gender Flip: The mythological Acat was a male god, but this one is very much female.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She already relished taunting and tormenting Maya, but the second Zatz call out Maya's name with concern during battle, she started going for the mean.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Questioning Mitclan's decision not to send her after Maya and the missing Zatz gets her executed.
  • Hartman Hips: She might actually have Maya beaten, bonus for her hips being bigger than her waist and chest.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Despite being a goddess, she lets her bloodlust get way out of hand and prefers to "play with her food" rather than finish a mission efficiently or with honor.
  • Irony: Rejects Maya's offer of friendship on the grounds that she doesn't need friends — never needed anyone — except for Zatz. Yet it's clear to the audience that he barely tolerates her and dumps her soon after.
  • Jerkass: Acat is not a nice person by any means, being incredibly violent and more than happy to toy with opponents. The only exception to this is Zatz who she loves dearly, but Zatz is more than turned away by her actions to the point that he breaks up with her in favor of Maya.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Her love for Zatz is stated to be this in her character card.
  • Power Glows: Her tattoos turn purple when she activates them.
  • Power Tattoo: As the goddess of tattoos her body is covered in them, but she's also able to use the ink as weapons for battle or even to gain wings.
  • Punny Name: While the original name is not intended to be this, Acat quips that like "a cat" she likes to toy with her prey before going in for the kill.
  • Sadist: Acat admits that she likes to weaken her prey and watch them suffer on top of giving them brutal deaths. This is one of the reasons why Zatz lost interest in and breaks up with her, viewing her as needlessly cruel and dishonorable.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Maya if she followed all her worst instincts.
  • Slasher Smile: Delivers a damn good one before she shoots Maya with her blades.
  • Starter Villain: She's the first major threat that Maya faces.
  • Tattooed Crook: As the goddess of tattoos Acat is covered from head to toe in them, and she is quite the bad girl.
  • Temporary Love Interest: She is introduced as Zatz's girlfriend, although while she clearly adores him Zatz looks like he's forcing himself to stick with her (the reason is unknown, although it's possible their conflicting personalities drove a wedge) and winds up falling in love with Maya when he first sees her and even ends his and Acat's relationship when she has Maya on the ropes. To add insult to injury, Acat is killed by Lord Mictlan when she doesn't disclose Zatz's location or that he assisted Maya, and while Word of God does say that Zatz felt awful he doesn't explicitly mourn or even make mention of her once she's gone. invoked
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She's only active for a short amount of time before Lord Mictlan kills her. After that she's gone for good.
  • Winged Humanoid: She can summon massive wings made from the ink on her body.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Seems to think that she and Zatz are a case of Unholy Matrimony, but she's really a Temporary Love Interest and Zatz is put off by her Sadist tendencies.
  • You Have Failed Me: Subverted. Mictlan takes her report that she failed to bring Maya to him and doesn't know Zatz's whereabouts rather well, instead sending other gods after them. It's only when Acat questions his decision by begging him to give her another chance that the court gasps in horror and he executes her on the spot.
  • Younger Than They Look: A downplayed example, but while it has been stated she's a teenager (and certainly acts like one) she looks and sounds a bit older.

    Ah Puch

Ah Puch

Voiced by: Rita Moreno (English)Foreign V As

A trio of enigmatic gods who act as guides to Maya and her friends throughout their adventure.

  • Adaptational Heroism: While sometimes portrayed as a god of childbirth and beginnings, in the original myth Ah Puch was most prominently a wicked god of death, darkness, and disaster whom the Mayans rightfully hated and feared. Here Ah Puch completely lacks any real negative traits.
  • In Name Only: The three benign sister goddesses who serve as oracles are a stark contrast to the original male and evil god of the dead.
  • Same-Sex Triplets: There are three of them, though for most of the series only one appears at a time.
  • The Weird Sisters: Three Same-Sex Triplets with magical abilities who help to subtly steer the course of the story.

    Xtabay

Xtabay, Goddess of Illusions

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xtabay_masked.jpg
Voiced by: Grey Delisle (English),Foreign V As

The sadistic Goddess of Illusions, and the one responsible for the massacre of Picchu's family.

  • Animal Motifs: Scorpions, as she recites the famous fable on why she went against her word when Picchu spared her. She also briefly takes the shadowy form of a scorpion when retreating from a battle.
  • Asshole Victim: She is killed when Lord Mictalan murders all of his loyal allies for more power. While the others get pitiable ends, it's unlikely anyone will feel sorry for Xtabay.
  • Blood Knight: Considering she and her army wiped out an entire village just because, according to her words, she is a warrior and "that's what warriors do".
  • Cruel Mercy: Xtabay chooses not to kill Picchu when she slaughters his village, preferring to instead have him live with the idea that it was his fault that everyone was killed.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Xtabay's the Viper to Picchu's Farmer. In fact, Xtabay even recites the famous "Scorpion and the Frog" fable when she gets into Picchu's head to make him believe her slaughtering of his people was his fault.
  • Karmic Death: She believes that treating people with mercy and compassion is foolish and weak. Fittingly, she doesn't get any mercy from Mictlan.
  • Kick the Dog: To some of Lord Mictlan's victims posthumously, as she entertains the war god by taking their forms and mockingly begging him for mercy. And of course there's the entire deal with Picchu...
  • Hate Sink: Out of all the gods shown, Xtabay is the biggest jerk among them due to her being ungrateful towards Picchu sparing her, wiping out his village and making him believe it was his fault.
  • Master of Illusion: As the goddess of illusions, Xtabay is able to either transform into another being or cause people to have hallucinations. In fact, her true appearance is actually a big, floating headdress while the humanoid below is merely an illusion.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Xtabay manages to make Picchu blame himself for the slaughtering of his people, something that was purely of her own decision and actions.
  • Mind Rape: During their second confrontation, Xtabay psychologically tortures Picchu yet again through hallucinations of his village's slaughtering as well as illusions of his parents telling him that their deaths were on his head.
  • Never My Fault: When Picchu spares her in battle she decides to thank him by returning to the scene and slaughtering every man, women, and child there except for Picchu. She then proceeds to make Picchu believe their deaths were his fault because he showed mercy instead of hers who made the choice to take advantage of said mercy.
  • Not Worth Killing: She leaves Picchu as the sole survivor of his village for this reasoning, saying that his kindness is nothing but shameful weakness and undeserving of a warrior's death.
  • The Oath-Breaker: Xtabay tells Picchu that if he lets her go he'll never see her again...and in a short period of time she returns to slaughter his village. She doesn't even bother to evoke Exact Words by using a disguise or any other get-around.
  • Sadist: She's yet another example, but she seems to favor breaking people down mentally after causing unspeakable tragedy. Just ask Picchu...
  • Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: When they face off once more Xtabay tries to goad Picchu into killing her, complete with a maniacal Slasher Smile. He refuses.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: She's a firm believer that showing mercy to someone on the battlefield, or perhaps even in general, is an absolute disgrace.

    Cipactli

Cipactli, Goddess of Alligators

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ntfx_maya3_cipactli_print_eng.png
Voiced by: Rosie Perez

The Goddess of Alligators and wife of Cabrakan. She and her husband first encountered Maya and Rico on their journey to the Jungle Lands, being two of the many gods tasked with bringing Maya in to be sacrificed.

  • Adaptational Abomination: Inverted - The mythological Cipactli was a borderline Eldritch Abomination with no clear gender, while here she's an attractive woman with scales. Even her alligator form is comparatively less monstrous.
  • Affably Evil: She first attempts diplomacy with Maya and tells her to just come quietly, only resorting to violence when Maya starts putting up a fight. When things get out of hand thanks to Cabrakan, Cipactli then forgoes the original plan and lets Maya escape. She eventually pulls a complete Heel–Face Turn with Cabrakan, as they show up to aid Maya in the final battle against Mictlan.
  • Big "NO!": Delivers one upon seeing Cabrakan's death.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She has reptilian features in her human form but it doesn't make it less attractive.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: Her waist is tiny but she sports Hartman Hips and a large chest.
  • Just Following Orders: Strongly insists on just bringing Maya to Mictlan and be done with it, until her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Mama Bear: Develops something of a maternal instinct towards Maya when she lets her go and even shields her from Cabrakan’s rage. Then in the final episode she and Cabrakan tag team to help King Teca and Lady Micte protect Maya from Lord Mictlan.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Adamantly protests against Cabrakan's plan to sacrifice Maya for themselves, not necessarily out of concern for the girl, but to not risk Mictlan's wrath in case the sacrifice doesn't work.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: After strongly insisting on just following orders to capture Maya, Cipactli ends up letting the girl go.
  • Token Good Teammate: Is this along with Vucub. Doesn't want to sacrifice Maya for their own power-up (with her flat-out stating that if it doesn't work, Mictlan will KILL both her and her husband) even letting Maya go during their first encounter. Both she and Cabrakan return to aid Maya in the final battle.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Upon Cabrakan's death by Mictlan, Cipactli's first instinct is to avenge her fallen husband. This sadly ends in her own demise as well.
  • Women Are Wiser: She is clearly more level-headed than Cabrakan and constantly chides him for his impulsiveness and temper.

    Cabrakan

Cabrakan, God of Earthquakes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cabrakan.png

Voiced by: Danny Trejo (English),Foreign V As

The hot-tempered God of Earthquakes and Cipactli's husband.

  • Achilles' Heel: An interesting example with his removable head. While it's clearly an asset that Cabrakan frequently uses to his advantage in battle, if anyone knocks it away from him far enough he's practically rendered useless.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the Popol Vuh, Cabrakan was simply an arrogant giant who enjoyed destroying mountains to show off his strength.
  • Berserk Button: Cabrakan HATES being called weak. Maya uses this to her advantage
  • Break the Haughty: Goes from an agressive, boastful and ill tempered god to a whiny Sore Loser demanding a rematch after Maya and Rico beat him in combat.
  • Creepy Child: Takes the form of a toddler with skull face paint along with Cipactli to lead Maya and Rico into an ambush.Bonus points for having needlepoint teeth and an unsettling deep voice.
  • Defiant to the End: After Lord Mictlan renders him helpless he dares him to do his worst. Mictlan happily complies.
  • Easily Forgiven: By Maya, who seems to have quickly forgiven Cabrakan’s earlier attempt to kill her and is equally happy reunite with both him and Cipactli in the final battle.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite his and Cipactli's rocky marriage, Cabrakan genuinely loves his wife. His main motive for going against Mictlan's orders and sacrificing Maya for himself is for him and Cipactli to be the ones to defeat Mictlan together.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Cabrakan is deadset on his plan to sacrifice Maya, but also promises her a quick and painless death. Thankfully Maya escapes before he could kill her, and Cabrakan soon makes a Heel–Face Turn with Cipactli.
  • Flying Face: Has a floating head that he can utilize as a makeshift weapon, also doubles as a liability as someone can easily knock his head away.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: His reason for sacrificing Maya: he doesn't want power per se, but it's the only way he sees to stop Mictlan.
  • Jabba Table Manners: His first appearance at the gods' feast shows him gleefully pouring an entire tray of food into his mouth.
  • Kick the Dog: His interactions with Rico and Maya in Chapter 3 are nothing but this, from constantly taunting the former’s poor wizardry skills, to attempting to kill the latter for his own selfish gain.
  • Losing Your Head: He can detach his head to use as a weapon, although it's fairly easy for an opponent to knock it off and temporarily incapacitate him.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Will explode at even the slightest insult of him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He abandons his plan to sacrifice Maya and joins her in the battle against Mictlan.
  • Multi-Armed Multitasking: Has three arms. Until Mictlan rips them off.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite his and Cipactli’s issues he genuinely seems to love his wife.
    • As Cipactli and Cabrakan shed their child disguises and show off their god forms, the latter adorably gushes over how pretty she is and flashes a goofy grin.
    • He even seems to consider her when trying to sacrifice Maya, saying that he wants them both to be the most powerful gods in the realm.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Considering his response to Maya taunting him is to throw a tantrum like an oversized toddler and cause catastrophic earthquakes... Yeah...
  • Oh, Crap!: Subverted. He has this reaction when Rico casts a spell on him that would presumably kill him… only to realize he survived and the Rico instead actually destroyed Estefan.
  • Slasher Smile: Has one that rivals Lord Mictlan's as he's getting ready to sacrifice Maya for himself.
  • Sore Loser: After Maya, Rico and Chiapa best him in combat, he angrily demands a rematch.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Whenever someone accuses him of being weak he throws a tantrum and tries to prove how strong he is.

    Chivo

Chivo, God of Dark Magic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chivo.png

Voiced by: Carlos Alazraqui (English)Foreign V As

Lord Mictlan's loyal second-in-command, and God of Dark Magic.

  • Adaptational Species Change: Unlike most of the other gods, his apparent inspiration the Huay Chivo wasn't an individual deity, but a type of legendary creature akin to the Chupacabra.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite his lack of redeeming qualities, it's hard not to be at least a bit sorry for him when his last words are him realizing that he too is just a pawn Lord Mictlan is more than ready to sacrifice.
  • Blow That Horn: During the final battle he pulls one of his own horns off and blows into it to rally the gods. Lord Mictlan was apparently unaware of this ability.
Mictlan: That's a thing you can do? I never knew you could do that.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Inverted. Chivo is surprised Lord Mictlan would kill him, along all the other gods.
  • Evil Sorcerer: A given for the god of dark magic, he serves as the gods' main caster in their battles with Maya and her allies.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Subverted. He repairs Estaban. However, it's actually because he fears peasant magic, so he only did it to manipulate Rico into not using it.
  • Gruesome Goat: A dark god resembling a twisted anthropomorphic goat.
  • Number Two: Or at least the closest Mictlan has to one. Hence why he was shocked that Mictlan would kill him too.
  • Satanic Archetype: He is one of the purely evil gods, is based on a goat, and his dominion is dark magic. Downplayed, however, since he is not a tempter per say but does try to push Rico away from peasant magic and he is just the number two to the series' main villain who is also this trope.
  • Undying Loyalty: Unlike most of the gods he never once entertains the thought of overthrowing Lord Mictlan, and while Bone and Xtabay's final moments are to take one last futile swing at Mictlan, Chivo is simply shocked and heartbroken that his master would turn on him in spite of his loyalty.

    Bone and Skull

Bone and Skull, Goddesses of Thievery

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bone_and_skull.png

Voiced by: Grey Delisle (Bone) and Alanna Ubach (Skull)

The sneaky twin Goddesses of Thievery.

  • Always Identical Twins: They can only be told apart by their voices and slight differences in clothing.
  • Canon Foreigner: Not based on any actual Mesoamerican gods, and were just created for the show. Although according to the artbook they were based on the unnamed Lords of Xibalba.
  • Creepy Twins: An evil pair of skeletal twin sisters who are thieves and very much down for cutting anyone in their way.
  • Defiant to the End: After Mictlan rips Bone's heart out she still charges at him for a few seconds before melting into silver goop.
  • Dem Bones: Yeah, the names are pretty much a dead giveaway.
  • Dirty Coward: After Bone witnesses Maya kill Skull, she vows to avenge her another time and flies away. Later when she fights the Barbarians, all she does is run away screaming.
  • Dressed to Plunder: As their names hint at, these two take their wardrobe inspiration from pirates. Suiting, given their thieving nature.
  • Dual Wielding: They wield a pair of glowing red lances each.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Bone is shocked to see Skull die and swears to avenge her. But decides to do it another time and then steals from her sister's corpse.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Out of all of Maya's opponents Bone and Skull seem the most fond of dishing out vitriol, cruelly reminding Maya that she's a bastard and claiming that no one really loves or wants her. This could have been a tactic to either break Maya or to (somehow) get her to join their side, but either way she pushes through to defeat them.
  • Off with Her Head!: Maya does Skull in by beheading her. This also marks the first time that Maya kills a god.
  • We Can Rule Together: During their fight they try to convince Maya to join them so they can overthrow Lord Mictlan and rule the Underworld together. Obviously Maya refuses, but the sisters spending the entire time stealing from Maya and outright insulting her (Skull in particular saying Maya was the worst thing to happen to her family and that she was a product of her father's indiscreción) further sunk any chances for an agreement or even hints that they might have been bluffing.
