Tear Jerker / Maya and the Three

Go To

Chapter 1: Quinceañera

  • Maya telling Queen Teca she hates her and wishes she had a different mother. It gets more saddening when it's revealed Queen Teca isn’t Maya’s biological mother.

Chapter 2: The Prophecy

  • Maya learning that her brothers were killed in the first battle against Lord Mictlan. The funeral for those who died was also a tearjerker, with the last one staying being poor Maya, who looks at the three jaguar statues with sadness.
    • Even Zatz is deeply saddened by the deaths of Maya's brothers, solemnly returning the shattered remains of the trio's weapons to Maya and her father and trusting them into her care.
    • After Zatz announces the Jaguar Brothers’ death, King Teca chokes out a little sob.

Chapter 3: The Rooster

  • Rico's backstory - he was an outcast for his use of peasant magic, but the Gran Brujo was the only one who believed in him. Rico accidentally killed him when he lost control of his powers, and it led to him being forced to live alone with nobody but Gran Brujo's staff Estefan to keep him company.
  • The Gran Brujo tells Rico and his daughter, the Gran Bruja, to protect each other before he dies. However, immediately afterwards, the Gran Bruja exiles poor Rico. Gets worse in that there's no doubt she did that out of jealousy on top of what Rico accidentally did. The series' art book reveals that Rico is Gran Brujo's grandson and Gran Bruja's nephew. This fact alone makes all of this even worse; he accidentally killed his grandfather, and was abandoned and exiled by his aunt, who was probably the only living family he had left.
  • It's bad enough seeing the children tease little Rico, but watching as full grown adults do nothing but further ostracize a child is just another level of sad.
  • Cipactli and Cabrakan laughing at Rico’s failed spell triggers his memory of the Luna Islanders laughing at him.
  • Rico accidentally breaking Estefan with a spell that was meant for Cabrakan. Not helped by the fact that Cabrakan mocks him for it.

Chapter 4: The Skull

  • Chimi's mother died after giving birth to her, and her albino appearance led to her being called "El Monstruo Blanco" (The White Monster). She was left for dead as a child and would have indeed died if it wasn't for the little monkey.
  • After an interaction with the tribe got out of hand, the tribe decides to burn down the jungle in an attempt to kill Chimi. This leads to the death of Chimi's animal friend Monkey, who died protecting her.
  • Even if Acat was a ruthless villain, her death at the hands of Lord Mictlan is no less tragic and horrifying.
    Acat: Goodbye, Zatz...

Chapter 5: The Puma

  • Picchu showed an enemy mercy. In return, she brought back her army to kill off Picchu's village, including his parents. The enemy taunts him by saying he doesn't deserve a warrior's death.
  • Chimi's mother died giving birth to her. The reason she is seeking out the Goddess of Death is to see her mother's spirit and "apologize for being born". Imagine going through your entire life blaming yourself for your mother's death, and that's on top of the mistreatment Chimi got for being an albino.
  • The episode explores more of Rico's guilt over accidentally killing the Gran Brujo. As a kid, he had nothing before the Gran Brujo took him in. When he died, Rico lost the first person who ever cared for him. As Rico tells his story, we see his stutter acting up.

Chapter 6: Maya and the Three

  • Maya coming back to Teca, realizing that her home is being attacked by Lord Mictlan's forces, and quickly rushing in to find her parents.
  • When Maya realizes Queen Teca is pregnant, Queen Teca sadly replies how it never happens when you expect it, indicating this was an unplanned pregnancy and Queen Teca is heartbroken at the idea of having a baby in the middle of a war.
  • Rico, Chimi, and Picchu are still upset with Maya for lying to them about destroying the gate rather than facing Lord Mictlan.
  • Maya accidentally kills Skull, which causes her to break down for a bit. Bone is also saddened at the loss of her sister, even if it's brief.

Chapter 7: The Divine Gate

  • The opening flashback where Lady Micte presents baby Maya to Lord Mictlan. Before her husband can kill the infant on the spot, Lady Micte convinces him to wait until she's older and to let her send Maya off to the mortal realm, which he accepts. As soon as the door closes behind her, the goddess drops her ruthless facade and becomes a sobbing wreck as she cradles her daughter close to her.
  • Zatz watching Lord Mictlan kill his father, Camazotz. The poor kid already lost his mother when he was barely an infant, and now all he can do is sob helplessly as his only remaining relative is killed right in front of him.
    • As Mitclan prepares to sacrifice Maya, Zatz brokenly begs the war god to spare her kill him instead. Mitclan doesn't even pay the demigod boy a bit of notice as he pleads for the life of the girl he loves.
  • Picchu dying in a Heroic Sacrifice by staying behind so his friends can escape Lord Mictlan and the other evil gods. Although he dies fighting against them, he is reunited in the afterlife with his parents.

Chapter 8: The Bat and the Owl

  • The opening flashback. Camazotz and Zatz's mother Zyanya, with an infant Zatz, are fleeing from something. They reach a boat, and Camazotz tells her to get in. Suddenly, she knocks him out. She places him and Zatz in the boat and lets it go adrift. She then goes to fight what was chasing them, giving her husband and child time to escape at the cost of her own life. When Camazotz awakens, he realizes he and his son are alone and the woman he loves is gone. He can do nothing but wail her name to the heavens.
  • Lady Micte revealing her motive in having Maya: As Mictlan slowly grew more power hungry, the goddess knew it was only a matter of time before her own husband turned on her. In a desperate attempt to gain enough power to overthrow him, she initially conceived a demigod baby solely as a Sacrificial Lamb. Naturally, Micte couldn't go through with it and fell in love with her daughter, but was forced to send her away to Teca in order to save her and buy some time. Micte sounds genuinely remorseful the entire time she tells the story and never tries to justify her actions.

Chapter 9: The Sun and the Moon

  • Lord Mictlan sounding genuinely hurt and betrayed that Lady Micte turned against him. It doesn't change things for him, however, and he continues his evil plan despite proclaiming his love for her.
  • Zatz screaming for Maya when Lord Mitclan knocks them apart with a devastating attack.
    Lord Mitclan: This ends now!
(Smashes into the pair and bares down on Maya with his blade)
    Zatz: (visibly horrified) Maya!
  • Cabrakan and Cipactli dying together against Lord Mictlan.
    • Cabrakan's last words being his goodbye to Cipactli. Cipactli then immediately attempts to avenge her fallen husband before getting killed herself.
  • Mictlan kills all the gods that were on his side to gain their power. Chivo's last words are lamenting that he, too, wasn't spared despite his loyalty.
  • When Chimi and Vucub meet again, the latter reveals that Mictlan ripped his eyes out for aiding Chimi and the others.
  • Lord Mictlan killing both Zatz and Lady Micte in front of Maya, prompting her toward the duel to the death.
    • Zatz's last words before meeting his end? "I love you, Maya."
    • Maya's tearful rant to Mitclan immediately afterwards is just as heartbreaking. Her voice very audibly breaks as she lists off the people Mitclan has taken from her.
Maya: Lord Mitclan! Murderer of my friends! My family! (voice breaks) And my love... (raises Eagle Claw and grits her teeth) I challenge you...TO A BATTLE TO THE DEATH!
  • Maya ultimately sacrifices herself to destroy Lord Mictlan, but in the end, all the spirits have a final moment with their loved ones (all of which are, in and of themselves, tear jerking and heartwarming at the same time), and Maya and Zatz eventually spend eternity together as the sun and moon.
  • In a happier variant, Lady Micte grants Chimi's wish and lets her meet her mother's spirit. Chimi apologizes to her for her dying from childbirth, but her mother assures her that she'd gladly die a thousand times if it meant her daughter could live.
