Heartwarming / Maya and the Three

Go To

Chapter 1: Quinceañera

  • The Jaguar Triplets' adoration of and dedication to Maya. They surprise her on her birthday with gifts from epic quests and try to cheer her up when their mother scolds Maya for sneaking off to the fights on the day of her coronation.
    • What's more, when Zatz crashes Maya's coronation and announces that Mictlan wants their little sister as a sacrifice, they all draw their weapons and say Go Through Me.

Chapter 2: The Prophecy

  • Things are awkward between Maya and the queen after Maya learns that her biological mother was a goddess, and Maya angrily berates her parents for not telling her the truth sooner. Despite all this, Queen Teca embraces Maya and assures her that while she might not have given birth to Maya, she is still her mother, blood or not.
    • The queen then offers to cook Maya's favorite meal to help her feel better. Even if Maya used it as a distraction to sneak off to find her father, the gesture was still very sweet.
  • The fact that the entire Teca Kingdom's army was willing to go to war against Lord Mitclan if it meant protecting Maya, even if they were without allies. Their resounding cheers of "For Maya!" as they march off really drives home just how beloved Maya is by her people.
  • Zatz describing Maya to his father. He enthusiastically gushes about her courage and loyalty, then sports the most adorable lovestruck smile when he describes her beauty. The breathless joy in his voice as he relays this information is beyond precious.
Zatz: Princess Maya is different, Father. You should have seen her! Courageous, and loyal! And...beautiful...
  • Zatz's support for Maya during her clash with Acat, calling out her name in worry, smiling when she lands a decisive blow, and cheering for her when she emerges triumphant.
  • When Acat tries to kill Maya while she's vulnerable and unarmed, Zatz interferes and angrily chastises Acat for trying to shoot her opponent in the back. And when Acat still tries to attack anyway, Zatz immediately destroys her weapons and turns his assistance to Maya by tossing her a rope to climb.
  • Even when Maya blames Zatz for her brothers' deaths and scoffs at his offer to help, Zatz still remains polite with her, and smiles as she runs off to Luna Island, wishing her luck.

Chapter 3: The Rooster

  • Gran Brujo's interactions with Rico. Up until his final moments, the old man is nothing but kind, patient, and encouraging to the insecure little boy. Even when Rico accidentally unleashes his peasant magic, Gran Brujo still calmed him out of the trance at the cost of his own life.
  • The gruff and brash Cabrakan adorably gushing over his wife, Cipactli, when the two of them shed their child disguises to reveal their godly forms.
    Cabrakan Aw, you're so pretty!
  • In the climax of the battle between Maya, Rico and the Swamp Gods, Cipactli eventually decides to forgo capturing Maya and lets her escape. Maya in turn comes back to help Cipactli when the goddess gets stuck under some rocks due to her ill-tempered husband. The two of them hug and part on good terms as Cipactli gives Maya directions to The Jungle Lands and offers her support in the fight against Lord Mictlan.

Chapter 4: The Skull

  • Rico falling head over heels for Chimi the second he lays eyes on her, even calling her a miracle and gazing at her with lovestruck wonder.
    • A few scenes later, Chimi curiously asks Rico what he meant when he called her "a miracle". When a nervous Rico hesitates, Chimi looks away and tells him to shut up, but then immediately smiles to herself, clearly delighted by the compliment.

Chapter 5: The Puma

  • Unlike Rico and Chimi, Picchu is not a feared/hated outcast. Instead, he grew up with a loving family and has the respect and admiration of everyone among the Barbarians. The King and the Princess have nothing but kind words to say about Picchu, and hope that Maya can help him get over his grief.
  • Maya and Zatz's sparring match among the pillars is basically one giant flirting fight. They both start smiling the second the battle starts, and even when Maya tells Zatz "Because I hate you!" when he asks why they're fighting, she's clearly joking. The two spend most of the fight giggling at each other and grinning as they clash, and Zatz even lets Maya get the final strike as their fight closes out.
    • At one point during the fight, Zatz tries to kiss Maya, and Maya can't help but give a mischievous smirk as she parries his attack.

Chapter 6: Maya and the Three

Chapter 7: The Divine Gate

Chapter 8: The Bat and the Owl

  • Zatz comforting Maya after Picchu's Heroic Sacrifice. He finds her crying in a moonlit cave and sits beside her, revealing his personal beliefs about what happens to family members when they die.
Zatz: My mother died when I was just an infant. So every night, before I went to bed, my father would share a story about her to keep her memory alive. But one night, I refused to hear another story. I told my father they made me sad. That's when my father let me in on a little secret. He said since my mother died selflessly, she's now a star in the sky, and she's always there looking after me. (points up to an orange star) There. That's Mamá.
    (Maya gasps in wonder)
Zatz: (smiles and points to a nearby purple star) And that's Papá.
    Maya: They're beautiful!
    Zatz: And now they're together...forever.
    • Zatz gently cradling Maya in his arms when she starts to cry, then wiping her tears away when she turns to face him. He then sweetly caresses her face as she smiles up at him, culminating in their First Kiss.
  • Maya and Micte's heart-to-heart:
    • For Maya: Even though the girl is still resentful of Lady Micte and treats her coldly, Maya finally gets some much-needed closure on her birth mother and learns that Micte wasn't quite the monster that she made her out to be.
    • For Micte: She acknowledges some of the more insidious parts of her past without making any excuses for herself, and genuinely apologizes to Maya for what her actions put her daughter through.
    • The flashbacks of a disguised Micte visiting Maya on her birthday every year, including as the chambermaid from Chapter One who cleaned Maya up and comforted her after her fight with Queen Teca. After this point, Maya melts and accepts Lady Micte as her mother. The two of them hug and hum Bolom Chon together.
  • Queen Teca and Lady Micte becoming fast friends and bonding at the dinner table over Maya.
  • Zatz returning to Teca with the Barbarian kingdom in tow, and immediately singles out Maya from the crowd with a warm smile.
    Zatz: Hey! I missed you.
    (Maya smiles and blushes)
  • Just before the final battle begins, Zatz teases "Meet a nice human girl, my father said." But it's abundantly clear from his tone that he wouldn't have it any other way, and Maya pulls him into a Big Damn Kiss in response.
Maya: Just in case I never get to do that again.

Chapter 9: The Sun and the Moon

  • Lady Micte going into full Mama Bear mode and defending Maya from Lord Mictlan during the final battle.
Lady Micte: Get away from my daughter!
  • Maya smiling lovingly at Zatz throughout the battle, particularly when they pull off a spinning dodge from one of Mictlan's attacks. She just gazes up at him with the most adorable expression, and all Zatz can respond with is a sheepish chuckle and a playful Defensive "What?".
  • During a hectic moment in the fight, Zatz offhandedly mentions how the Barbarian Princess tried to hit on him when he asked them to travel to Teca with him. Maya immediately voices her concern, but Zatz reassures her that he's hers and hers alone.
Zatz: I let her know I was taken.
  • Chimi protecting Rico from Lord Mictlan's goons when he runs to help the Gran Bruja, and her subsequent Love Epiphany.
Chimi: I'll cover you! You better not die, Rico!
(Rico smiles and winks at her)
Chimi: (to herself) Because I think I love you...
    • This adorable exchange immediately afterwards.
Chimi: Rico, look out! (fires two arrows at a pair of golems)
    Rico: Thank you, Chimi!
(Chimi smiles at him and continues fighting)
Rico: (clearly smitten) Man, I think I love that girl...
  • Maya happily reuniting with Cipactli and Cabrakan in the final battle and introducing them to her father. Cabrakan’s reappearance is especially noteworthy. Not only did he significantly humble himself since his defeat in the battle from Chapter 3, but Maya also seems to have forgiven the god for his earlier attempt to kill her and now eagerly welcomes him as another ally.
    • Cipactli crediting Maya for helping her and Cabrakan save their marriage.
  • Rico giving Estefan to Gran Bruja, reasoning that she needs him more and thanking Estefan for all his help.
  • The birth of the Teca twins. Maya immediately calls them cute and coos over them.
  • Maya and Zatz sharing one last kiss before he goes off to lure away Lord Mictlan's snake form.
(Zatz transforms into a giant bat and flies off)
    Maya: Good luck! Mi príncipe...
  • At different points during the final battle, Maya refers to both Chimi and Rico, as her hermana and hermano. And both of them smile and return the sentiment.
  • During the climax of the battle against Mictlan, Lady Micte manages to summon the spirits of Maya's fallen loved ones. Her three adoptive brothers and Picchu come to help her reach Mictlan's weak spot.
  • Before performing her Heroic Sacrifice, a weakened Maya has been hurt by an attack by Mictlan. She then imagine warmly and lovingly embracing each of the most important people in her lives - Her parents, her brothers, Chiapa, Chimi, Rico, Picchu, Zatz, Micte, and her newborn twin siblings. Remembering all of them, gives Maya the strength to make her final move against Mitclan.
  • While it doubles as a Tear Jerker, as a result of Lady Micte's summoning, the spirits of the deads are able to briefly visit their still-living loved ones after the battle:
    • The Jaguar triplets share a moment with their parents, Maya, and their newborn siblings.
    • All the fallen Teca soldiers reunite with their wives.
    • Rico and La Gran Bruja are reunited with Le Gran Brujo, who tells them he's proud of them.
    • The Widow Queen's father is giving his daughter a hug in the background.
    • Chimi meets her late mother for the first time. When Chimi tries to apologize for causing her mother's death, Chimi's mother reassures her that she "Would die a thousand lifetimes" if it meant Chimi could live. Chimi promptly bursts into Tears of Joy and embraces her mother, and the two share a heartfelt howl.
    • Zatz reunites with his parents. They show their sheer pride at his heroism.
    Camazotz: A noble warrior's death!
Zatz: You raised me right, Papá.
Camazotz: I am so proud of you! (to Zyanya) A sacrifice for love seems to run in this family, mí amor.
Zyanya: (in happy tears) Come here, mi niño!
    Zatz: Ay, Mamá...
(Zyanya pulls him into a tight hug)
Zyanya: You're so handsome, like your Papá!
(Camazotz envelopes both of them in a hug)
  • Maya and Zatz ascending to godhood as the Sun and Moon respectively, destined to dance together across the sky for all time. After everything the pair have been through, knowing that they'll be able to spend the rest of eternity together is incredibly satisfying and heartwarming.
  • The ending showing Maya's loved ones simultaneously having a happy endings as well and honoring the former.
    • Jaguar and Eagle have grown up, under the loving care of their parents.
    • Rico and Chimi became a couple and were blessed with four children (2 girls and 2 boys).
      • The couple has an albino son but in an inverted situation from Chimi's life, the boy is surrounded by a loving family that will never think of him as a monster. Also, when he's first shown, the albino son is biting Rico's leg but his father has no problem with it. He even walks funnily as to not accidentally harm his child.
    • All of them watch the Sun/Maya set. All of them giving loving smiles in memory of their loved one.
    • Who has the last line in the series? Maya's little sister, Eagle, saying "Adios, Maya." And she's waving goodbye using a toy replica of her older sister's sword.
      • If you look closely at her facepaint, you notice it's styled in the same way as her older sister.
    • Just the fact that Chimi and Rico are living in the Teca Kingdom, possibly in the same resident of King and Queen Teca. Given their closeness with Maya coupled with their huge displays of bravery, honor, and loyalty in their battle against Lord Mictlan, it's very likely that the King and Queen offered them a place in the palace. Given how both Rico and Chimi were unfairly ostracized in their youth, it's very satisfying seeing them welcomed and appreciated, especially by the parents of dear friend.
