From left to right: Ulrich, Yumi, Odd, Aelita, Jérémie, William and Kiwi

  • Badass Crew: Even when not on Lyoko, Ulrich and Yumi possess advanced martial art skills (due to already being trained in it in the real world before Lyoko), Odd is athletic and relatively good at adapting to any social situation, William has shown both abilities, Jérémie is a prodigy kid with advanced knowledge and greatly helps without fighting, and Aelita is just as smart as he is and fights at the same time. It's saying something that they fought against XANA's attacks several times and still survived long enough for Aelita to deactivate the towers.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Usually in eye catches featuring them.
    • Ulrich: Green (in the real world)/ Yellow (on Lyoko).
    • Odd: Purple.
    • Yumi: Black (in the real world)/ Red (on Lyoko)/ Green (on eyecatch).
    • Jérémie: Blue.
    • Aelita: Pink.
    • William: Black / Grey / Red.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: The Return to the Past becomes more or less this for them once they realize its side effects. Using it allows them to instantly reverse any damage XANA might have done with his attacks (save for actual death, but it does save people who are about to die) and cancel any breach to their secret without having to worry about witnesses. However, each time they use it gives XANA a permanent boost in power and intelligence. Once they learn about this early in Season 2, they make a strict rule of using it only as a last resort, to the point Ulrich nearly gets banned from the group when he tries to use it for a personal reason. That being said, this only applied when XANA was still confined to Lyoko. Once he's in the network during the second half of the series and thus, no longer connected to the Supercomputer, the Return to the Past becomes safe to use.
  • Digital Avatars: The way they go on Lyoko.
  • Ensemble Cast: The five main characters (and later on, six) all get their share of focus and not one of them can be said to be the main character, though Aelita is the most central to the Myth Arc as she is a core part of Lyoko.
  • Family of Choice: A result of being Fire-Forged Friends. Given that Yumi is the only one with much contact with her family, Aelita is presumably an orphan, and Odd and Ulrich have strained relationships with their families, the Lyoko Warriors gradually form their own tight-knit family. William is the only one not included in the "family" both due to the fact that he was recruited for his abilities rather than his friendship with the heroes and later on, his XANA-fication that led to sour relations with the other Lyoko-warriors, Aelita aside. By Evolution, they're fully settled into this once William got over his rivarly with Ulrich and made amends with the group.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Ulrich and Yumi (the fighters), Aelita (the mage) and Odd (the thief) apply this trope on Lyoko. Ulrich's avatar is samurai-themed having warrior-like outfits including a sword (two later) as the best close-ranged fighter. Aelita's avatar looks like a magical elf (and later angel) and she can alter her environment and later creates energy fields. Odd's avatar is cat-themed and haves noticeable agility and mobility being able in addition to shoot small and quick arrows on his hands.
    • Subverted for Yumi being a Jack of All Trades she's has traits of all of them: boomerang-like fans (fighter's trait), telekinesis (mage's trait) and She-Fu skills (thief's trait).
    • More later introduced but William can be considered as a upgraded version of Ulrich as the fighter, especially under XANA's control.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Later on, thanks to Character Development.
  • Friendless Background: A few of the Lyoko Warriors were this prior to meeting each other and turning on the Supercomputer. Jérémie and Yumi are both stated to have had no friends prior to forming their group. Ulrich also mostly kept to himself. In Jérémie's case, it's implied that his lack of friends was due to his lack of social skills, his high intelligence, and the fact that he was almost always working with computers or technology. Ulrich and Yumi, in comparison, seemed to have no trouble socializing but preferred to be by themselves. Odd was very sociable, but had just transferred to Kadic, while Aelita was an AI who lived by herself on Lyoko and during her previous life on Earth, was homeschooled and not mentioned to have interacted with anybody besides her parents.
  • Hero Secret Service: Odd, Ulrich, Yumi and Jérémie are this to Aelita.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Their multiple travels on Lyoko and fight against monsters have allowed them to build a resistance to the Spectres' XANAfying by the time XANA developed the ability. The only exceptions were Jérémie and William likely due to both having been on Lyoko only once (excluding XANA-William's 2 virtualizations) before being Xanafied.
    • Being through a cycle in the scanners also makes them immune to having their memories of what transpired erased when a Return To The Past is triggered. This also doubles as a Required Secondary Power, as without it they'd just repeat the same day endlessly with no memory of having done the same thing before.
  • Kid Hero: They're still in school.
  • Limited Social Circle: The heroes are rarely shown socializing with people outside their group, although this is Justified as most of the group, sans Odd, are more introverted in personality, as well as the stress and time commitment of fighting XANA bringing them closer together while also isolating them from their peers. For example, Yumi's Only Friend outside of the team was William, who was also one of the few — if not only — people to regularly hang out with the group in general (as seen in "A Bad Turn" and "Final Mix"). And then he joined the group as well.
  • Medium Blending: Traditional animation in the real world, CGI-rendered 3D models in Lyoko.
  • Multinational Team: Downplayed in that it's never a major plot point, but the Lyoko Warriors' names do indicate at least different ancestry.
    • Jérémie Belpois and Aelita Stones are French.
    • Ulrich Stern is of German descent.
    • Odd Della Robbia is of Italian descent.
    • Yumi Ishiyama is Japanese.
    • William Dunbar is of Scottish descent.
  • Ordinary High School Students: When not fighting XANA, they are this.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: On occasion, the Lyoko Warriors rush to the factory in their pajamas (shoes not included). William is the only one who averts this trope, always going to Lyoko in his casual clothes.
  • Playing Sick: A regularly used method to escape school when XANA attacks.
  • Powers as Programs: A literal example; the powers are programs.
  • Recruit Teenagers with Attitude: Justified; they weren't "recruited" by adults in the first place, Jérémie (who is himself a teenager) just happened to find the Supercomputer and assembles a bunch of comrades of his age for help because he is afraid adults would want to destroy the Supercomputer or shut it down without leaving him the time to find a way to materialize Aelita. Plus, the one time they try to break the secret and ask adults for help, no-one believes them. Other times their secret has gotten out, adults, as expected, simply want to alert the authorities and take over themselves without hearing what the group has to say because they are children. However, William was indeed recruited when they decided they needed a sixth ranger.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: Courtesy of their memory being registered in the Supercomputer, they are immune to the Return to the Past memory-erasing effects. The prequel even revealed that Jérémie was originally affected by Return's memory wipe the first time he used it, but after being informed of events by the rest of the group he scanned himself once to immunize his mind from the effect.
  • Short Teens, Tall Adults: All of them are quite short compared to the adults, with the exception of Yumi and William.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: They frequently pull this kind of exit on any bystander whenever they hear about a XANA attack. Actually Lampshaded by William about Yumi in "Sabotage":
William: As usual, she couldn't wait to give me the slip...
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: At their beginning, they had limited loyalty to each other besides keeping the secret and would often argue or be missing (in "Gravity", Ulrich flat-out refuses to help deal with the current attack so he can take part in a soccer match; and in "Marabounta", he ditches a mission out of embarrassment after receiving mouth-to-mouth from Jim in front of all his classmates), and once XANA started developing into a Manipulative Bastard, proved rather easy to turn on one another. They get better over the course of the series, especially as they form their true family bond. Except with William, who is flat out rejected when he tries to atone for what he did to them under XANA's control.
  • To the Batpole!: Reaching the Hacker Cave where the virtual action starts involves skateboarding (except Jérémie and William: the former rides a scooter and the latter travels on foot) through a sewer, rappelling down ropes in an abandoned factory, taking an elevator locked by impressive blast doors... and finally being dematerialized in high-tech scanners with the obligatory Invocation.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Aelita and Yumi are the only two female members of the team by the time the series start. This trope used to be averted in the prequel, since Sissi was one of the original founding members of the team... briefly. After she was kicked out due to revealing the group's identity to the world, this trope started to be Played Straight. However, it was subverted in the novels when American transfer student Eva Skinner joined the team.

    Ulrich Stern

Ulrich Stern

"Who's the dork that pushed me into Sissi's arms?"

Voiced by: Marie-Line Landerwijn (French), Barbara Weber-Scaff (English), Noé Velásquez (Latin American Spanish), Adolfo Moreno (European Spanish), Mayumi Asano (Japanese), Tomasz Bednarek (Polish)

A quiet and asocial person by nature, quite the opposite of his best friend, Odd. Headstrong and stubborn, he cares for his friends and would do anything for them. Ulrich is more athletic than academic and it shows when you compare his grades to his sports performance. He attracts the attention of many females of the school, but has obvious feelings for Yumi. He manifests in Lyoko as an unarmored samurai, with the ability to "Triplicate" into three of himself, and Super-Speed. His katana can deflect XANA's creatures' energy attacks and later gets the ability to dual weld two katanas. He is from neighboring Germany, which is next door to France, the home country of the series setting.

  • Abusive Parents: Ulrich has an emotionally abusive dad who only seems to care about his son's grades and his football matches, and, if Ulrich's talk is anything to go by, rarely even talks to him. (Ulrich even mentions in season 3 that his father hasn't spoken to him in a year.) Not to mention his mother who acts as an enabler by simply sitting by and watching her husband harshly berate their son (even scolding Ulrich when he dares to talk back to him), implying she's just as abusive as his father.
  • Achilles' Heel: He has vertigo, which flares up at rather inconvenient times. This is presumably the reason his vehicle is the only one with a wheel, whereas the other two can fly. His fighting style isn't much useful against flying enemies, to boot. He can throw his swords, but it doesn't guarantee that it will always hit, and this leaves him disarmed.
  • Achilles in His Tent: Wound up in the proverbial tent after being kicked off the team briefly in "The Chips are Down", and then again when he was sulking in "Marabounta".
  • Badass Normal: Even in the real world, Ulrich is no slouch and had already been trained in martial arts before Lyoko and is an excellent fighter. He's also shown high skill with a sword. In the episode "A Bad Turn", he uses a katana dropped by Yumi's father to fight a materialized Krabe, and manages to cut one of its legs off and block several laser bolts, one of which was about to kill Yumi. He also defeated a xanafied Tamiya in "Music to Soothe the Savage Beast" by using a mirror to send Tamiya's electric charge back at her.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": He terribly plays Romeo in "Laughing Fit".
  • Battle Couple: With Yumi, despite not actually being a couple. It is repeatedly mentioned how well he and Yumi fight in sync together (often hinting at their romantic connection). In season 4, they are often paired off for partner missions on the specific basis of their excellent fighting skill together.
  • Berserk Button: Talking bad about his friends is one surefire way to anger Ulrich, as his abusive father found out the hard way.
  • The Big Guy: He is physically the strongest Lyoko Warrior barring William (which is debatable as XANA gave him most of his known powers and William's original powers were unseen). When XANA attacks using a Specter-possessed person or similar vessel, he is usually the one who fights it.
  • Big Man on Campus: Considered handsome by almost every girl in Kadic, and a skilled soccer player to boot. Notably, he is not exactly happy with it, as it causes him to have Sissi as a Stalker with a Crush.
  • Book Dumb: Academically, that is. It's well known by everyone that his grades are bad, especially season 3 (though it's left ambiguous whether he really is bad at school of if he merely lacks time to review due to the time spent fighting XANA; in at least one episode, he manages to focus on his work for a while and actually gets decent grades). This is the major source of his tense relationship with his father.
  • Bring It: Like Odd, he sometimes does the "bring it" Bruce Lee gesture.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Transfer: Ulrich! Scanner: Ulrich! Virtualization!
  • Calling the Old Man Out: In the season 3 finale, his father comes to Kadic to talk to him about his bad grades. At first, Ulrich silently submits himself to his criticisms; then when his father suggests his friends are a bad influence on him, and it's at that point Ulrich finally snaps at him:
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He likes Yumi. A lot. But he never manages to articulate that — even in the face of competition. The group often bugs him to just admit to Yumi how he clearly likes her, but he can't work up the nerve to actually say the words.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Not as much as Odd, but when his friend isn't around, he feels the need to take his place at making lame jokes.
  • Character Development: Starts from being a big Jerk with a Heart of Gold to becoming more grounded and mature than Yumi in Season 4, coming to accept their Just Friends relationship (even though everyone knows that is far from the case). He's also the one to mend fences with Sissi in the finale. He doesn't quite get past his rivalry with William, however, criticizing him for his Leeroy Jenkins attitude that got him caught by the Scyphozoa despite Odd being much worse in that department. It's not until Evolution that they truly bury the hatchet that ends the rivarly for good.
  • Chick Magnet: Yumi, Sissi, Milly, Émilie, and most fans have all wanted a piece of him at some point or another. By Season 4's finale, he settles for Yumi.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He doesn't take kindly to the idea of other guys being interested in Yumi. It gets especially bad when William enters the picture. A good chunk of the B-plots in Seasons 2 and 3 are caused by him being this. When Johnny comes to him for advice in season 3 over his Precocious Crush on Yumi, what does Ulrich do? Give him advice that'll embarrass him and irritate Yumi, even though Johnny's hardly any competition at all. Thankfully, by season 4, he largely grows out of this. But he still carries a scowl when he sees her with other guys.
  • Create Your Own Villain: His unwarranted rejection of Sissi after her "betrayal" of him and the group is what sets her off to become the school's Alpha Bitch and a thorn in the group's side. He eventually seems to realize this and by Season 4 is nothing but polite to Sissi even when annoyed by her, culminating in him inviting her back into the group as a friend and forgiving her, despite Sissi not remembering the events that got her kicked out in the first place.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Mainly toward Sissi and Odd, but the others also get their part of it.
  • Designated Victim: Not as much as Yumi, but he's often used by Jérémie in his experiments, such as in "Nobody in Particular". Not only that, but he's also, with Yumi, William's most frequent victim (he devirtualized them seven times each), which doesn't help.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: He's been deeply in denial about his feelings towards Yumi since the beginning. This stops immediately when William becomes a legitimate competitor for Yumi's affections.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Ulrich can be especially jealous when it comes to Yumi. Even Odd lampshades how bad his jealousy can get and has to call him out occasionally. He gets better, though.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: His rationale for not wanting to shut down the Supercomputer, as he enjoyed being a hero on Lyoko. Given how his father has such a powerful, and detrimental influence on his life, it's hard not to argue that his time in Lyoko was a major distraction and made him feel good about being a genuine hero literally saving the world.
  • Interchangeable Asian Cultures: It's stated he likes Japanese culture (and he respects a few customs for Yumi's sake), despite being of German descent, which is presumably the reason his Lyoko avatar is a Japanese samurai, rather than a German themed warrior note . However, the martial art he practices is Pencak Silat, which is Indonesian. Might be justified in real life, as Pencak Silat was somewhat of a fad in France and Netherlands around The '90s and the Turn of the Millennium.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In the prequel, he is much more antisocial, being actively antagonistic toward Yumi just because she beat him in martial arts practice, treating Sissi with disdain especially after a misunderstanding between them which makes her an Alpha Bitch, acting displeased by Odd now sharing his room, almost ratting him out to Principal Delmas when discovering he brought Kiwi in secret to Kadic, and even later attempting to use Kiwi as a test subject for Jérémie to see if the virtualization process works. Doesn't prevent him from coming to Jérémie's help twice when seeing him in danger, going on Lyoko to rescue Odd without hesitation when he gets virtualized instead of Kiwi and actually showing concern for Aelita's plight. Judging by how he is portrayed in other episodes, it seems like teamwork eventually made him a better person.
  • Just Friends: With Yumi. At first, the idea of this leaves him frustrated, but by season 4, he seems to have made peace with it.But by the end of the show, it's left unclear if their relationship is solved or not as they hint at wanting to re-explore their romance again. By Evolution they're back to being just friends.
  • Kick the Dog:
  • Love at First Punch: He's first checking Yumi out as she passes by him to get a vending drink at school, showing an interest in her at first sight. But, he properly meets her as his sparring partner during a martial arts class. He makes a slight jab at her martial arts skills before she gives him a roundhouse kick to the face and pins him down, making him set up a re-match with her later on.
  • Made of Iron: In one episode, he takes two full-on electrocutions from a Spectre-created doppelganger of Jérémie.
  • Master of the Mixed Message: Yumi and Ulrich both do this to each other from time to time, but Ulrich is by far the worst offender, constantly giving both Yumi and Sissi mixed messages. The latter is arguably even more egregious, as Sissi often doesn't retain her memory for many of the things Ulrich gets annoyed at her for, instead mostly having positive memories of their time together. Examples include when he takes her to a Subsonics concert to thank her for her help, or when he reads a love poem he wrote for Yumi to Sissi instead to make the former mad—Sissi has no reason to think it isn't a genuine love letter for her though, but then also gets rejected by Ulrich the very next episode.
  • Meaningful Name: "Stern" for The Stoic. His name also is derived from the Germanic word for "chief"; fitting as he sometimes leads the charge against XANA and Ulrich just so happens to be of German descent.
  • Mr. Fanservice: In-Universe. He also qualifies out of universe too, as the writers seem to have went out of their way to have him provide Fanservice every now and then.
  • Sarcastic Devotee: Never misses a chance to snark about Odd's ego and love life, but the two get along like the best of friends.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend:
    • In regards to Yumi, especially when Odd or someone else teases the clear romantic connection between them that they just won't fully act on.
    • Even more so to Sissi, but in this case, he doesn't really like her that way to begin with. Even with amnesia during one episode, when Sissi tries to take advantage of this to make him think they're dating, he says he feels zero connection and she isn't his type.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Tends to lapse into this when Yumi spends time with William, such as when he follows her to the pool in "Marabounta". Yumi calls him out on this, especially when he says it was only a coincidence he was there too.
  • The Stoic: He does occasionally shows emotion, typically his Unresolved Sexual Tension with Yumi and occasional outburst, but overall he is much calmer than his teammates.
  • Straight Man: To Odd's comic relief.
  • Twice Shy: With Yumi, with both characters struggling to admit their feelings for each other through the series.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: A whole Ulrich-centered episode has him constantly seeking approval from his ultra-exigent abusive father, by playing a football match against a rival school. He gets it in the end... at the apparent cost of his father's life. And then promptly has it Reset Button'd. Poor guy.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Ulrich is terrified of heights. This is due to the fact that he suffers from vertigo, a disorder that causes nausea and disorientation and is triggered if the person looks down from a high perch. This disability even extends to his Lyoko avatar.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With Yumi. According to the Series Finale "Echoes", they eventually will... but it was highly tentative. Unfortunately as of Evolution they under the "won't" part.

  • The Ace:
    • Ulrich is pretty much the strongest Lyoko Warrior for most of the show's run. His katana can one-shot monsters (provided he strikes them at their weak points), reflect lasers, block a Megatank's blast and doubles as a thrown weapon. Not only that, but he gets two very versatile Lyoko powers that come with no drawbacks at all.
    • Zigzagged in Season 4. He starts to get overshadowed by Aelita and is usually worfed by William, but even then everyone stares in awe as he singlehandedly curb-stomps XANA's forces in "Hard Luck". Also, there is the fact that he is the only one who kills the near unbeatable Kolossus in the penultimate episode.
  • Attack Reflector: His katana can be used to deflect the Monsters' laser, much like a lightsaber.
  • Badass Biker: From Season 2 onwards, thanks to the Overbike.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Less so than Odd, but he will occasionally shout "Impact" when hitting a monster or "Triplicate/Triangulate" when using his power.
  • Car Fu: With the Overbike. He once sends it crashing against a Megatank to topple the monster into the Digital Sea.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Ulrich is utterly outclassed by XANAelita in their swordfight in episode 92, but he manages to keep up with her for a while before she takes him down.
Jérémie: Ulrich, stop everything. And whatever you do, don't devirtualize Aelita!
    Ulrich: Don't worry, I wasn't even close.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: "Triplicate" allow him to generate two duplicates of himself. In the first season they only act as decoys to distract enemies, but Seasons 2 and 3 has him using them as allies that can attack of their own. He used it only once in Season 4 (in "Double Take"), as William correctly guessed which one was the real Ulrich and devirtualized him.
  • Doppelgänger Spin: "Triangulate" allows him to essentially combine his Super-Sprint and Triplicate, causing him to move at Super-Speed around the opponent in a triangle-like pattern, with the three Ulrich appearing at each angle.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: There's no real reason for him to be a samurai in Lyoko. He's not even Japanese (he's actually of German origin). But damn, it sure is cool. note
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Literally, as his weapon is easily the most effective against most monsters, being capable of causing easy damage to their weak-points and deflecting their lasers.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In "Skidbladnir", William devirtualizes him by using his own katana against him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His katana is an efficient weapon both to deflect attacks and inflict heavy damage, while his Super Sprint (and even without it) power makes him the fastest of the group. He becomes the second fastest one in Season 4, as William's Super Smoke surpasses his Super Sprint. However, without special abilities, William remains slower than Ulrich.
  • Le Parkour: One of the many uses he found for Super Sprint.
  • Samurai: His avatar's design is based on a samurai. In the final season, his appearance is updated and is loosely based on a ninja, though.
  • Speed Echoes: His Triangulate ability allows him to create these. What's more, they're not just afterimages; they're actual copies.
  • Super-Speed: "Super Sprint!"
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: He's got a better track record throwing his sword than Odd does shooting his arrows.
  • Wrecked Weapon: His sword can be destroyed by the monsters' lasers if it is hit while Ulrich is not holding it. This is demonstrated in "The Pretender", forcing Ulrich to make an Improvised Weapon out of a broken rock to fight for most of the episode.

  • Awesome, but Impractical: His Triplicate ability is useless against William, who can identify the real Ulrich among the clones through an unknown ability. In fact, Ulrich only used this superpower once in the entirety of the fourth season, while the Super Sprint became his signature Lyoko power.
  • Dual Wielding: His new avatar grants him a second katana.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: His new swords have a blue aura when Ulrich wields them, but glow red if touched by William or XANA-Aelita.
  • Hard Light: When "translated" on Earth.
  • Sensual Spandex: An update from his much more loose-fitting older outfit.

Odd Della Robbia

"That's just the Magical Odd Effect. You see me once and you feel as though you've known me all your life!"

Voiced by: Raphaëlle Lubansu (French), Matthew Géczy (English), Christophe Callabero (English, two episodes of Season 1), Gabriel Ortiz (Latin American Spanish), Jesús Pinillos (European Spanish), Hiroki Shimowada (Japanese), Brygida Turowska-Szymczak (Polish)

The only extravert of the Team, and an incorrigible smart-aleck. He dresses in flashy, clashing colors, mostly purple and yellow. Though physically petite compared to the rest of the team, he is an adrenaline junkie, just the type to go for extreme sports. Also a passable student; his strengths are in the languages and artistic classes. He's a big flirt who's dated about every girl in his grade (most of them for only a day or two) as well as a few others. He has smuggled his small dog, "Kiwi", into the dormitories. In Lyoko, his avatar is a Cat Boy version of himself, including claws and a tail. He has heightened agility and stamina in this form, and can shoot "Laser Arrows" from his forearms — which, for a time, tended to run out of ammo at the worst possible moments. This shortage was resolved in Season 2 at the expense of another of Odd's powers, the "Future Flash" which offered spontaneous visions of the mostly immutable immediate future. This left Odd with the short end of the stick powers-wise, a fact lampshaded in Season 3's "Triple Trouble" when Jérémie tries to give Odd a teleportation ability, but ended up making two clones for him instead, and the clones wind up not disappearing when no longer needed. At least he still has a marginally useful energy shield, granted as part of the Season 2 power realignment. He is from neighboring Italy, which borders France.

  • Anime Hair: A rare justified example: he is explicitly mentioned to use gel to keep his hair that way (though that doesn't explain the bi-color part). Notably, he originally had a regular hairstyle in the prequel (which made him look like a blonde haired Yumi), and changed it according to what he looks like on Lyoko (twice).
  • Big Eater:
[seeing Odd wolfing down food for the first time]
Ulrich: You always eat like this?
Odd: No, it's just I'm not very hungry today.
  • Bilingual Bonus: In addition to speaking French, Odd apparently knows Chinese (which he uses while in Yumi's body to speak with her parents, creating a rather awkward scene with them) and knows his native Italian and a little bit of Russian. Making him and Yumi, who can speak Japanese and French, the only members of the team to speak multiple languages, with Odd speaking 4 languages total.
  • Blood Knight: Odd loves fighting on Lyoko as he's the first one to dive headfirst into combat with added laughter and commenting how much fun it is. Even in real life with XANA's numerous schemes he still enjoys the thrill of battle.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: In training. He's too young to drink, but he gets the eating, womanizing, battle-happy and fun-loving elements down pat.
  • Book Dumb: He is absolutely terrible at school, and apparently manages to keep decent grades only by cheating and copying Jérémie's notes. However, he is also shown to be quite creative on the artistic side of things, and while he has absolutely zero sense of strategy, he is quite capable of improvising, so he has some smarts.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Odd, while generally known for having bad grades, can be surprisingly bright when he wants to. A notable example is in "A Great Day" where he has no trouble answering Mrs. Hertz's questions after one Return to the Past, and only gets better with the following. Another example is in "Crash Course" where he flawlessly virtualizes Yumi at the right spot at the right time to save Aelita despite having slept during Jérémie's whole computing lesson! Even more impressive is that Odd also knows at least 4 languages (his native French and Italian, Chinese and a small basic knowledge of Russian).
  • Bring It: He's fond of the "bring it" Bruce Lee gesture.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gets the least respect in his group, does badly in school, has absolutely no luck with his love life, gets picked on by his sisters, and as he lampshades, is "the only one who looks like a nitwit on Lyoko".
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Transfer: Odd! Scanner: Odd! Virtualization!
  • Camp Straight: He does look a bit effeminate (to the point of leading to Viewer Gender Confusion from some fans), dresses in pink and purple, and speaks in a high-pitched voice. Graphic errors such as the occasional lack of undershirt, or his voice in the French dub, don't help either. Ironically, however, he is clearly shown to not only be straight, but also very interested in girls. Of course, that doesn't stop the Yaoi Fangirls from imagining things...
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Nothing changes Odd's goofy demeanor, not even being faced with certain death.
  • Catchphrase: "T'y crois pas!" ("Can't believe it!")
  • Characterization Marches On: Long before the flanderizing in Season Four took place, there was Odd in Season One. While always a jokester and shown to be poor at school, he still possessed some basic street smarts plus his Future Flash ability implied that there was more depth to him besides just being "the funny one". By Season Two he was dumbed down considerably with the Future Flash gone and only a throwaway explanation in Season Three elaborates that it was accidentally deleted and never restored.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Almost everything he does is this. See Leeroy Jenkins.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: For all his silly jokes, Butt-Monkey status and tendencies to go crazy in fight, Odd definitely is a skilled fighter. At several points, he has been able to deal with large amount of monsters entirely on his own, escape or distract Xanafied people on Earth and save Aelita. Not to mention he is the one who finally takes down William, allowing the Lyoko Warriors to get him back.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: When Jérémie used a Tower to gives him powers for a short amount of time so he could fight toe-to-toe with a XANA-possessed Yolanda.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In the prequel.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Heavily downplayed. He does not become evil per se, but he does reveal the secret to his girlfriend Brynja in "Kadic Bombshell", leading to him being temporarily kicked out, and to Brynja's shenanigans on the Supercomputer almost killing the heroes. Fortunately, he gets better when he sees that Brynja is little more than an Attention Whore.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: One leg of his pants is a darker shade of purple than the other.
  • Flanderization: Coupled with Took a Level in Jerkass, Odd was always a rather playful character, but in Season 4, his antics start becoming more and more troublesome, which are coupled with a Never My Fault attitude in regards to him screwing up.
  • Green Around the Gills: He feels nauseous while riding the Transport Orb to sector five. Yumi experiences the same symptoms in the episode where the two swap bodies.
  • Insistent Terminology: "I'm not scrawny, I'm svelte."
  • Is It Something You Eat?: Being a Big Eater with a very limited vocabulary, this comes up a lot.
  • Keet: Short, skinny, hyperactive, Camp Straight, he fits this trope like a glove.
  • KidAnova: He has had relationship with almost every girl in his school, Yumi, Aelita and Sissi excepted (and even then, he once replaced Ulrich as Yumi's partner at dance, flirted with Aelita upon first meeting her, and Sissi gets moments with him several times too).
  • Leeroy Jenkins: He rarely has any strategy before charging; most of his tactics consist either in doing something completely crazy or going ahead shooting at the enemy. Even his own teammates have some doubt about his sanity.
Aelita: You call this being careful? I call it being COMPLETELY NUTS!
Odd: Isn't that the same thing?
  • Meaningful Name: Aside from the obvious, "Odd" may also come from "Odr", meaning "tip of the arrow".
  • Mr. Fanservice: He has his share of fangirls. This is at least partly due to his Lyoko form... and the Sensual Spandex.
  • Never My Fault:
    • In one episode, he refuses to take the blame for getting himself and Aelita in detention (for context, Odd wanted Aelita to cover for him in gym class... since he spent the whole night playing a video game).
    • In another, Kiwi gets out of control, much to everyone else's annoyance, and Odd continues to try to make excuses for the dog instead of disciplining him.
    • In yet another, he gives an embarrassing photo of Yumi to the school newspaper as a joke, and then convinces Ulrich to take the blame, which leads her to be furious with the latter for most of the episode. Later attempts to explain "Ulrich's" decision to give the photo away leaves him to accuse Ulrich of trying to get Yumi's attention because he likes her. Remember: Ulrich is taking the blame to protect Odd's reputation for reasons of friendship. Granted, the last one actually ends up working in Ulrich's favor with Yumi when it leaves her touched that he would seemingly do that to get her attention. But, it was still a fairly selfish thing to do.
  • New Transfer Student: In "XANA Awakens", the prequel two-parter.
  • The Nicknamer: He's the one that names all the monsters (even complete with Xtreme Kool Letterz). As if that wasn't enough, two episodes reveal that he also calls some monsters by ordinary human names such as "Lucy-Ann". He's also responsible for Jérémie being called "Einstein" and Aelita "Princess" most of the time. He sometimes calls Ulrich and Yumi "Lovebirds".
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: It's even worse in the original French version, where he actually sounds like a kindergarten girl even without screaming.
  • Shipper on Deck: He is very supportive of Ulrich's relationship with Yumi. To a lesser extent, he's this way with Jérémie and Aelita's relationship as well.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: As he stated in the aptly named episode "Bragging Rights".
Odd: Yes, I'm a braggart, and I love it that way!
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Sandwich: He hates this trope; he spends the entirety of the episode "Tidal Wave" complaining about not eating.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In Season 4, coupled with Flanderization. Highlights include him being extremely cocky in "Bragging Rights" and selling an Embarrassing Old Photo of Yumi to the Kadic News, followed up by trying to get out of facing Yumi's wrath by having Ulrich take the fall in "Cold Sweat". He also goes as far as to say that William is the Lyoko Warriors' enemy, even though he didn't fought them willingly. Dies down in the end of "Fight to the Finish" however, where he regrets rejecting William and is shown shedding a tear over Franz Hopper's Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: While his plans are generally anything but well-thought, he truly shines in improvisation, adapting to new elements as needed. A notable example is when facing the Tarantulas. While the very first one easily defeats all the heroes by itself, Odd is later capable of taking on four of them by himself.

  • Alice Allusion: Unintended, but it's undeniable that he's got the whole "Cheshire Cat" thing going.
  • Arch-Enemy: The Megatanks. Lampshaded in the first episode.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: His Laser Arrow is the team's primary ranged attack, but unlike his companions he has a limited ammo supply and is pretty much helpless when he's out of ammo. Jérémie can refill him, but it takes time.
  • Badass Normal: After season 1, he lost his Future Flash and became the only member of the team without a special ability. This is actually a plot point in a season 3 episode, where he comes to the realization that the lack of superpowers doesn't make him any less effective than his teammates.
  • Boring, but Practical: Highly ironic considering Odd's usual personality, but amongst the Lyoko Warriors, his abilities and weapon set are not very flashy and very straightforward, much to his annoyance in one episode... but his Laser Arrows are the most reliable long-range weapon the Lyoko Warriors have, being faster than Aelita's Energy Fields and needing less inherent skill than Yumi's Tessen Fans. His basic agility boosts from his form make him fairly acrobatic, and having the ability to briefly block laser fire from XANA's monsters is nothing to sneeze at. It's his Leeroy Jenkins tendencies that ultimately dampen his effectiveness.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Even after Jérémie erased his Future Flash power, he is still very competent. Of course, the fact his power wasn't of much use to begin with does help.
  • Cat Boy: His Lyoko avatar gives him a set of cat ears and a tail. He also runs on all fours quite frequently.
  • Chest Insignia: Of Kiwi peeing. Even he doesn't get why Lyoko did that.
  • Deflector Shield: Since Season 2 (and in the prequel as a minor continuity goof), he can generate a round energy shield before him to block the attacks of XANA's monsters.
  • Discard and Draw: Lost his Future Flash power in Season 2 in favor of being able to briefly generate a shield to protect himself from attacks.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the first episode, he uses the move Impact to attack a monster at point-blank without expending ammunition from his Laser Arrow. This move ends up getting given to Ulrich later.
  • Facial Markings: Like Aelita, he has markings above his eyes.
  • Finger Gun: An interesting variation, more akin to a Forearm Shotgun. Although he does not require it to fire, he usually holds his firing arm as if he was pointing a shotgun, and often does a pumping action motion that goes accompanied by a surprising shotgun sound effect.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: He loses a finger when he goes into Lyoko, likely because he becomes a Cat Boy.
  • Fragile Speedster: In Season 1. While he has as many Hit Points as anyone else, before Jérémie programs in his shield, he has no defenses except dodging.
  • Homing Projectile: XANA grants him this upgrade, but it's lost in the same episode.
  • Hover Board: His Overboard in Season 2.
  • Instant Cosplay Surprise: Again, in the prequel, he's the most baffled concerning his Lyoko avatar:
Odd: I don't dream about giant purple cats!
  • Long-Range Fighter: Played with. His signature Laser Arrows definitely enforce this, but his claws can also damage monsters and are often used to subdue XANA's Mantas. He will also not hesitate to straight up punch his opponents if he runs out of ammo (as shown in the episode "Franz Hopper") or if they get too close for comfort ("Bragging Rights").
  • Le Parkour: The undisputed master of it, even beating out Ulrich.
  • Running on All Fours: He gains the ability to run faster on all fours in Lyoko.
  • Seers: Future Flash gives him brief glimpses into the future. Unfortunately for Odd, when the power activates, he is often stunned and unable to move, and to make matters worse, the futures he sees are not mutable. He loses the ability in Season 2 in favor of generating a shield from his arms.
  • Super-Reflexes: Cat-like reflexes, essentially. He may not be very tough, but he's damn near impossible to hit.
  • Taking the Bullet: This is usually how he gets dematerialized, mostly because he's so agile that it's hard to hit him unless he wants to be hit.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His default skillset is smaller than the rest of Lyoko Warriors on paper (being pretty much his arrows and Future Flash), but he surpasses them in agility and physical abilities by a good margin (bar William and Ulrich). Likewise, as mentioned in Boring, but Practical, said skillset is the most straightforward in combat. It isn't flashy, but very deadly in the right hands... except Odd has a lax and reckless attitude that prevents him from really taking full advantage of what he already has.
  • Wall Crawl: Using his claws like a cat climbing a tree.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Future Flash. Not only does this power have very limited scope (Odd is the only one unable to use his power at will, and it's worthless in a fight), but the power activating causes Odd to stop moving for a while, making him an easy target, not to mention that the futures he sees cannot be changed, defeating the purpose of the power to begin with. Lampshaded when Odd mentions Jérémie erased it accidentally and never bothered reprogramming it because he felt it was useless. It's actually suggested that he is more effective without it.
  • Wolverine Claws: The claws of his cat paws can apparently harm XANA monsters to a very minor degree, as he sometimes uses them to spur Mantas while riding them and it causes them visible pain. It's not enough to destroy them, however.

Season 4 Avatar

Season 4 Avatar. Click here to see his teleported appearance

  • Hard Light: When "translated" on Earth.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: In "Guided Missile", William reflects Odd's Laser Arrow with his bracelet, devirtualizing him.
  • Made of Iron: Zigzagged. Generally, he's not that resistant and can easily be beaten when he's unable to defend himself. His one defensive technique, the shield is small, fragile and doesn't even protect his legs. However, he's so far the only Lyoko Warrior who survived a direct hit from William's Sword. Twice.
  • Sensual Spandex: Quite a bit tighter than his previous avatar's outfit.
  • Spam Attack: Thanks to an upgraded ammo count, Odd is much more liberal with his arrows here than in previous seasons. His main strategy against William involves unleashing a Flechette Storm that not even his BFS can block.
  • Unusual Ears: Cat ears (to complete the feline appearance).
  • Worf Had the Flu: Odd's mix of nimble movements and fast projectiles often made him the perfect counter to William's slow and short-ranged attacks. This often forced the writers to come up with contrivances to prevent the two from facing each other in a straight fight. In fact, without anything interrupting them, they fought only three times ("Bragging Rights", "Kadic Bombshell" and "Guided Missile"), which is extremely rare compared to the enormous number of fights William had with the others.

    Yumi Ishiyama

Seasons 1-3 Earth appearances. Click here to see her Season 4 appearance
Yumi Ishiyama

"Black is my color. Black, like your eye will be if you don't back off!"
Voiced by: Géraldine Frippiat (French), Mirabelle Kirkland (English), Liliana Barba (Latin American Spanish), Adelaida López (European Spanish), Sayaka Kinoshita (Japanese), Viivi Tamminen (Finnish), Anna Sroka-Hryń (Polish)

The tallest and oldest of the group, alongside William. A good student, she is a Japanese national at the boarding school, living off-campus with her family (she's the only member of the group to actually hail and be born from the Far East, as Yumi's birthplace is Kyoto, Japan). She is one grade above the rest of the Team, which proves sometimes problematic. While she may have feelings for Ulrich, Yumi is exasperated by his inability to articulate his crush. She long wishes to one day return to her beloved homeland of Japan once her days of fighting in Lyoko are over to rediscover her Japanese roots. Her virtual form is a Japanese Geisha before changing out the Japanese Geisha outfit for a streamlined Ninja spandex outfit with a collapsible razor-edged fan, with which she can deflect energy bolts. The fan can be thrown as a ranged weapon, returning to her hand after an attack. Yumi also exhibits telekinetic power over several objects of the Lyoko landscape — most often boulders in the Mountain or Desert sectors. A running joke among fans is XANA's tendency to single her out for attack.

  • Action Girl: Is proficient in martial arts in real life and already been training it prior to Lyoko (to the point where her parents thought her hobby was "weird"), and a very capable fighter both on and off Lyoko.
  • Anchored Ship: In Season 3, she tells Ulrich that she's not going to be anything more than Just Friends with him due to their constant love drama. It still becomes fairly clear that she still likes him, though, and doesn't truly believe her own words.
  • Badass Adorable: Yumi is downright adorable and attractive, but is surprisingly strong and agile for a girl her age.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: All of her everyday clothes include this feature; it seems to be very much in fashion at Kadic.
  • Battle Couple: With Ulrich. Even though they aren't actually dating, it is commented, primarily in season 4, that she and Ulrich fight very well together. During a mission, when Jérémie asks who's to be sent in, Aelita suggests them specifically because of how well they fight side-by-side.
  • Berserk Button: Yumi has two which are related to her Japanese roots:
    • Don't ever call or mistake Yumi as Chinese or even attempt to talk to Yumi in Chinese (see Mistaken Nationality below), Sissi found this out the hard way with the former which Yumi snapped at her for and Odd regularly does the latter to annoy her, as he can't speak Japanese.note
    • Don't ever insult Yumi's homeland or it's culture, Jim earned a well deserved Death Glare from Yumi for mispronouncing Japanese Manga as "Japanese mahn-goes."
  • Bilingual Bonus: In addition to speaking her native Japanese (which she only does when she's with her parents and her brother Hiroki), Yumi can also speak fluent French just as well, making her the only member of the gang to speak two different languages, next to Odd who can speak French, Italian, Chinese (ironically in a "Freaky Friday" Flip episode where he swapped bodies with Yumi no less) and Russian.note
  • Brainy Brunette: She is not as smart as Jérémie or Aelita, but she is still quite smart. Whenever Jérémie and Aelita are absent, she usually is the one in charge of using the Supercomputer.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Transfer: Yumi! Scanner: Yumi! Virtualization!
  • Catchphrase: In the original French...
  • Celibate Heroine: Takes this position in Season 3, after deciding that she doesn't want to complicate her working relationship with Ulrich by allowing romance into the equation, and instead resolves to be Just Friends with him. It doesn't actually change their situation any.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's closer in age to the rest of the group than most examples, but she's mature enough to fit the mold pretty well and often acts as the big sister to everyone.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as Ulrich, but when provoked...
  • Designated Victim: Unlike the other Lyoko Warriors, Yumi lives with her own family off-campus, making her isolated from them, and as such an easy target for XANA's attacks. One could argue her role as the group's Cool Big Sis and the fact she's the most reluctant to keep fighting might help as well, considering XANA's habits to play with people's minds. She's also, with Ulrich, William's most frequent victim (he devirtualized them seven times each), which doesn't help.
  • Cute Bruiser: In the pilot, she is able to match Ulrich in hand-to-hand combat in the real world. She is also very strong for her age, able to tear a screwed-in metal grate out of the ground (not without effort) as seen in "Revelation". And she's also very fast as well, having set Kadic's school record for the fastest dash in track.
  • Dude Magnet: For a girl supposedly not as remarkable as Sissi, it's amazing how many guys want her. Apart from Ulrich there's William, Théo Gauthier, Johnny...
  • Dying Curse: In "Final Round", she is the last Lyoko warrior to be defeated by a brainwashed William. As her virtual body disintegrates, she tells him how she knew bringing him into the group was a mistake.
  • Expy: Her shoulder-length hairstyle and outright serious demeanor, makes Yumi look very similar in appearance to Androids 17 and 18 from Dragonball Z (making the similarities even more noticeable is both Yumi and the Android Twins have noticeably big foreheads, with the latter being a more realistic take), bonus points for Yumi hailing from the country where the much beloved Anime-Manga series is made.
  • Everyone Knows Morse: She and Hiroki learned it to talk in secret at the table.
  • Furo Scene: Chances are pretty good that you'll catch Yumi in the bathtub in several given episodes (though, since most of these are in Season 1, this will be by Stock Footage).
  • Friendless Background: In "XANA Awakens," she mentions how she is friendless until Ulrich brings her into the group.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: She does a pretty decent job of pretending she's not into Ulrich, until someone (usually Sissi) starts flirting with him.
  • Goth: Wears almost all black clothes throughout Seasons 1-3, she wears slightly brighter clothes with a star pattern in Season 4. Her Lyoko Avatar on the other hand is the polar opposite as she wears an extremely bright Geisha outfit.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend:
    • In regards to Ulrich. Yumi has a fairly hilarious scene where she accidentally calls Ulrich her boyfriend in front of Odd and then repeats that Ulrich is her friend as if trying to convince herself of this.
    • She also says this about William, but in this case, it is genuine.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Her relationship with Aelita.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Out of all the team, she is the one to be the least comfortable with the struggle against XANA, as it forces her to routinely lie to her family (something she hates to do due to her Japanese customs as she's routinely dishonouring them on a daily basis), frequently exposes her to XANA's attacks and generally makes her life more complicated. By the end of the series, she is, excluding William, the only one eager to shut down the Supercomputer and move on to a Lyoko-free life. This is averted in her diary: back in the end of Season 1, she clearly states that she will miss Lyoko... but given that she didn't know how long the conflict with XANA would last...
  • Just Friends: With Ulrich. Though the finale hints that the two will start dating.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Unfortunately for her, when she makes questionable choices, it often ends up biting her in the ass. Not only that but it often happens when William is around.
    • Had she accepted William in episode 53 "The Secret" instead of "Final Round", they wouldn't have to send him in an emergency mission with Aelita in Sector 5 (by far the most dangerous of all sectors to remind you) without any experience. As a result, William got Xanafied, and Yumi became his favorite victim: she was the Lyoko Warrior he devirtualized the most (alongside Ulrich).
    • In episode 68 "Opening Act", Yumi, before fighting XANA-William, mocks him, saying that he is still a rookie. Said "rookie" then proceeds to devirtualize her.
    • In "Lost at Sea", Yumi disowns Hiroki for having stolen her diary, essentially leaving her all alone. When the pages of the journal are later torn, she says to Hiroki she'll never forgive him. Later, she ends up alone in the Digital Sea. Needless to say she doesn't like it and regrets not having made amends with Hiroki before she possibly kicks the bucket.
    • When William wanted to help them in the second-to-final episode, Yumi (Ulrich and Odd to a lesser extent) violently rejects him and refuses to let him on Lyoko, arguing XANA might seize the opportunity to control him again. Ironically, this is exactly what happens... except XANA is able to control him through a tower because he is still on Earth. When Yumi returns to Earth, the once-again Xanafied William utterly trashes her.
  • Mistaken Nationality: Regularly mistaken for Chinese, much to her irritation.
    Yumi: I. Am. JAPANESE!
  • Ms. Fanservice: Shares this role with Sissi. Yumi's had numerous risqué scenes including of dancing in a pool, bathing and kissing some boys, she's also the most stacked of the gang (with Aelita being right behind her). And at one point in the series, Yumi gets attacked by XANA-fied possessed plant vines that looks very similar to tentacle hentai with some vines even groping Yumi's breasts for a split second note .
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: When William requests to join the team for the last battle, Yumi violently rejects him and refuses to let him back on Lyoko, arguing XANA might seize the opportunity to control him again. Ironically, this is exactly what happens... except XANA is able to control him through a tower because he is still on Earth and hasn't been virtualized enough times. As if it is some sort of revenge, William then proceeds to gives a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to Yumi, which in real life would have left her with broken bones, at least.
  • One Head Taller: Not exactly one head, but she's notably taller than Ulrich, making her the tallest of the group. She takes from her mother, obviously, who is also taller than her father. Averted by Evolution which due to being played by the far shorter Melanie Tran in live action, Yumi is no longer the tallest of the group.
  • One of the Boys: She's the only girl in her group of friends (except Aelita, who's a computer program for most of the show). She also avoids traditionally "girly" past times, preferring soccer, track and field, and martial arts.
  • Only Friend: Downplayed. Her only friend outside of the team is William (and even then, he later joined the team). It's been pointed out that they were close.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: The palest of her friends, with very black hair to match, befitting her Goth appearance.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • To William in "The Secret".
Yumi: Because I find your second-rate Casanova act sickening! In the beginning, it was pretty nice. But now I'm really fed up! So why don't you buzz off and leave me alone?
    • Not even Ulrich (in "Marabounta") is spared:
Yumi: Oh, yeah, right. What an incredible coincidence! Anyway, do you mind shelving your ego for a minute?
  • Shorttank: She does have some feminity to her, but she is still significantly more tomboyish than both Aelita and Sissi.
  • Token Minority: One of two female members of the Lyoko warriors, and the only one of Asian descent.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to Aelita's and Sissi's Girly Girls.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Even though she had her occasional moments, Yumi is pettier and more sensitive in Season 4. Highlights include her being angry with Ulrich in "Lab Rat" for forgetting her birthday, disowning Hiroki in "Lost at Sea" for stealing her diary and tearing out some of the pages, believing that Ulrich sold an Embarrassing Old Photo of Yumi to the Kadic News, even though Ulrich wouldn't do that (granted, he did take the fall for Odd, though it made the situation with Yumi far worse) in "Cold Sweat", and harshly rejecting William's help in "Fight to the Finish". It's likely this stemmed from the prolonged stress that her XANA battles caused her over the series, as noted above in Designated Victim and I Just Want to Be Normal, as she always states how badly she just wants a normal life. She gets better come "Echoes", where the group shuts down the Supercomputer and is very happy about it. At this point, she's more in line with her Cool Big Sis personality, being on better terms with William despite rejecting his help earlier, and comforts Ulrich about living without Lyoko.
  • Twice Shy: Leading to a lot of Unresolved Sexual Tension with Ulrich.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Comments that the Kankrelats are her most hated enemies, calling them disgusting. Apparently, bugs, in general, creep Yumi out as she is visibly horrified by XANA's cybernetic spiders in "Bragging Rights".
  • Will They or Won't They?: She has this with Ulrich for most of the series. They decide to be just friends late into season 1, but William's introduction unearths their old dynamic. In "Echoes", it's hinted that they might start dating, but it's still very ambiguous. Evolution ultimately has them be just friends again.

  • Blush Sticker: To complement her Japanese Geisha aesthetic.
  • Boomerang Comeback: A favored trick of hers to take out monsters with her throwing fans is to catch them on the return after an apparent miss. Telekinesis certainly helps.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Her weapon. One in season 1, two from season 2 onward.
  • Geisha: Her outfit form seems to be at least partially based on one, altered to fit that of an Action Girl.
  • Hidden Weapons: She uses the big knot in her geisha-looking outfit to store her Combat Hand Fan.
  • Jack of All Stats: Not quite as agile as Odd, effective in close combat as Ulrich, adept at manipulating the environment as Aelita, or having William's sheer power — but able to perform well in all four areas. No longer the case as of Code Lyoko: Evolution (aka Season 5) as she gains a bo-staff, allowing Yumi to finally fight up close.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Unlike the real-life art of tessenjutsu, her fans are only functionally harming if they are flying, which means she is obliged to use them as throwing weapons. However, this is averted twice during season 4: In "Wreck Room", she attempts to slash William with her closed fan, but misses due to the weapon's short-range. Then in "Music to Soothe the Savage Beast", Yumi successfully strikes a Manta with the two fans in her hand, but this only inflicts some minor damage to it.
  • Mind over Matter: Her main power is Telekinesis, moving the landscape of Lyoko or her friends with her mind. She once sends a large rock tumbling toward a herd of Kankrelats, crushing a dozen of them in the process. In another episode, she saved Odd from falling into the Digital Sea by telekinetically pulling him up.
  • Mutual Kill: Downplayed. She doesn't actually kick off, but just before being devirtualized in "The Secret", she throws a fan at XANA-Aelita, devirtualizing her just after being devirtualized herself.
  • One-Hit Kill: Zigzagged. Her fans sometimes instantly destroy monsters without even touching their weak points, while in other episodes they merely dismember the enemies. William generally tanks it, however.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: By design choice or goof, her kimono is tied with the right lapel over the left. In real life, only burial kimonos are tied that way; a living wearer sporting it is seen in Japan as a sign of incredibly bad luck or a visual cue that he or she is actually a ghost.
  • Le Parkour: To great effect when she combines her psychic powers with her acrobatics.
  • Player-Guided Missile: Sometimes shown using her telekinesis to guide her fans.
  • Precision-Guided Boomerang: Her tessen fans can be thrown and always return to her.
  • Pstandard Psychic Pstance: She sometimes makes this gesture when using her Telekinesis. More so in Season 4.
  • She-Fu: She takes a far more graceful and gymnastic approach to fighting enemies than Ulrich, Odd, Aelita and William even although she is not as fast as Odd, as agile as the latter or powerful as Aelita and William.
  • Spin Attack: A combination of her Psychic Powers and fans that involves spinning in place or while jumping to deflect the monsters' lasers.
  • Three-Point Landing: She often lands in this pose following some of her acrobatics, including sometimes when just virtualized.

  • Fashionable Asymmetry: A shorter sleeve on one side, a buckler-like bracer, one stocking different from the other, and sakura petals on her thigh.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: Her upgraded costume makes her look more like a ninja than the previous geisha. Irony sets in as she still retains her tessen fans rather than switching them out for proper ninja weapons.
  • Hammerspace: Instead of keeping her fans inside her costume, she now has the ability to make them appear and disappear at will. This doesn't stop William from crushing her fans in "Lab Rat", however.
  • Hard Light: When "translated" on Earth.
  • Sensual Spandex: Like all S4 avatars, this one outfit nicely shows her virtual curves.
  • Wrecked Weapon: William crushes her two fans in "Lab Rat". This renders her defenseless, as Jérémie has little experience programming them.

    Jérémie Belpois

Seasons 1-3 Earth appearances. Click here to see his Season 4 appearance
Jérémie (Jeremy) Belpois

"OK, XANA. What do you have in store for us this time?"

Voiced by: Raphaëlle Lubansu (French), Corey Padnos (English, 2001), Sharon Mann (English, 2004-2007), Claudio Velásquez (Latin American Spanish, Seasons 1-2), Alan Prieto (Latin American Spanish, Seasons 3-4), Juan Antonio Soler (European Spanish), Yoshiko Kamei (Japanese), Anna Apostolakis- Gluzińska (Polish)

Jérémie is the computer genius whom operates the Supercomputer and allows the interface. He's also the leader of the team, and shows good tactical skills even under pressure. As the most level-headed, he keeps the infighting within the group to a minimum. He can even get a bit authoritarian, despite being the youngest. Jérémie is one year younger than Ulrich and Odd, having skipped a grade. He has more than a crush on Aelita, and it's largely this motivation that keeps the Team going in time after time to shut XANA down. Though he has been virtualized twice, this has never been done on camera — something of a Lampshade Hanging on the second occasion.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Heavily Downplayed, but a small case in the Fall of X.A.N.A. video game. While in "Fight to the Finish" he doesn't particularly mind William, planned to send him as back-up on Lyoko and expressed regret not to have send him sooner, in Fall of X.A.N.A. he is firmly against that idea and angrily tells William so when he enters the scanner room.
  • As You Know: Usually the one to deliver exposition, including what his teammates should already know.
  • Badass Bookworm: He is pretty much the archetypal geek, so this is a given. Though this is mostly visible in his relationship with Aelita; he is fairly comfortable with his little group of friends, and doesn't seem to care about what people think of him outside of them.
  • Badass Normal: He doesn't fight and was only virtualized twice as far as we know. However, he's by far the most important member of the group, thanks to his programs. Heck, in "Fight to the Finish", most of the credit in XANA's defeat is due to Jérémie and Franz Hopper. There's a reason XANA considers him his mortal enemy.
  • Beta Couple: His relationship with Aelita is much smoother compared to the tumultuous one of Ulrich and Yumi. Hell, they even kiss from time to time, something Yumi and Ulrich never get to do on-screen (though they do have an Almost Kiss on Lyoko at one point).
  • Blind Without Them: Jérémie seems (as seen in "A Great Day" when he has a bit of trouble trying to get his glasses) to have major issues seeing without his glasses.
  • Blue Means Smart One: Jérémie wears a blue shirt and shoes for the first three seasons. He's The Smart Guy of the Lyoko Warriors, playing Mission Control and helping his teammates with his astonishing computing skills while they fight in the Cyberspace.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Scanner: Jérémie! Virtualization!
  • Character Development: Was more demure and unsure of himself in earlier episodes. By Season 4, he's settled comfortably in his role as Mission Control and is more on-point in his plans to fight XANA.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Displays this in "Saint Valentine's Day", when he gets angry and possessive at the thought of another boy giving Aelita a Valentine's Day present. Odd even calls him out on acting like Aelita's his property.
  • Cybernetics Will Eat Your Soul: During Episode 38, he deliberately repeated Returns to the Past so he could utilize a special neuronal headset to increase his intelligence. However, this ended up hurting him mentally and physically, as he became increasingly irritable and was prone to fainting spells while under the device's influence. To add insult to injury, he actually wasn't getting smarter at all, and at the end of the episode, he destroys the headset.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: As soon as he meets Aelita and sympathizes with her, he becomes obsessed with finding a way to defeat XANA without having to sacrifice her, despite shutting down the Supercomputer with her still inside being the easier way out. Frequently lampshaded by the other Lyoko Warriors.
  • Everyone Knows Morse: He uses Morse Code to communicate with the others in Skidbladnir (actually only with Yumi, who claims to know it to secretly communicate with her brother). Given how Crazy-Prepared he is most of the time, he probably learned to use in case of an emergency.
  • Everything Is Online: He can use the Supercomputer to do a bunch of things that he really shouldn't be able to do. This is the only real explanation.
  • Forgets to Eat: Frequently; he often passes off his portion of meals to Odd so he can focus on finishing this program or that one.
  • Friendless Background: Prior to turning the computer on, he didn't have any friends. This is one of the reasons why he doesn't want to turn off the Supercomputer in "Echoes": He's afraid his friends will abandon him without an enemy to fight.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Practically every upgrade, program or device used by the Lyoko Warriors is created by him. He also is shown to build a lot of robots as his hobby, and once manages to make a nearly functional EMP bomb.
  • Good Counterpart: Develops into a full-fledged anti-XANA as he gains more experience with the Supercomputer. XANA takes note, since Jérémie seems to be his most hated foe.
  • Grade Skipper: As mentioned above, he's one year younger than Ulrich and Odd due to skipping a grade.
  • Hand Behind Head: His standard pose when he's not hunched over the Supercomputer's keyboard.
  • Hidden Depths: While he's not as athletic or skilled at fighting as the other Lyoko Warriors, and is most often seen at a computer, he seems to be reasonably athletic himself — being able to keep up with his friends on trips to/from the factory, as well as being able to climb up the ropes at the factory. Additionally, he is shown to be an adept swimmer — in "Laughing Fit", when he jumps into the sewer water to escape XANA's attack, in "Deja Vu" when he jumps into the swimming pool to rescue an unconscious Aelita, and in "Double Trouble" when he survives an attempt by one of XANA's spectres to drown him.
  • Hot-Blooded: Jérémie can be very stubborn and temperamental when he is stressed out. To where he'll even lash out towards his closest friends over something very petty and will often drive them away at times when he gets very riled up.
  • Hypocrite:
    • During the episode "Saint Valentine's Day", he gets very jealous over Odd (supposedly) giving Aelita a present for the holiday and acts like it's not allowed, even Odd remarks how Aelita isn't his property. But, later, he tells Ulrich and Yumi that they shouldn't be upset over the other receiving presents from Sissi/William. The two have to naturally lampshade how hypocritical he is being. (On the other hand, they were reprimanding him for his behavior over Aelita moments before, so this may have been a case of him just throwing their lecture back at them just to mess with them.)
    • He's angry at Ulrich for utilizing a Return to the Past to help Yumi's family (specifically, to get them the winning lotto ticket when her father loses his job and may move the family back to Japan) because it made XANA stronger for selfish reasons. Yet in Episode 38, Jérémie performs multiple Return to the Pasts to increase his intelligence, making XANA much stronger for even more selfish reasons.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Either Jérémie or the anglicized Jeremy. The former is the official spelling.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Einstein," "Frankenstein," "Frank-Einstein," "Brainiac" (only in the video game), and on one occasion "Ben Franklin".
  • The Insomniac: Frequently spends entire night working on programs to materialize Aelita or improve the Lyoko Warriors' equipment. In one episode, Aelita finds out he didn't even realize the night was over. In another, he actually falls asleep on the keyboard and it is noted by Odd from the key marks on his face. And in another, he worked so late that Aelita falls asleep next to him. Aelita often expresses concern over his late-night work habits.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He cares deeply about his friends and saving the world from XANA, but he can also be smug, snappish, and hypocritical. In an inversion of how this trope usually goes, the "jerk" parts becomes more noticeable in later seasons, as he grows more obsessive about fighting XANA and less tolerant of "wasting time" with his friends who simply want to live their lives.
  • Layman's Terms: Often has to repeat himself in simpler terms, because he forgets that everyone else isn't a super-genius.
  • The Leader: Type 1: Mastermind. He directs everyone from the Supercomputer.
  • Love at First Sight: Towards Aelita. Ulrich even comments that he thinks the reason he desired to materialize her in "XANA Awakens" was because of this.
  • Mad Scientist: He has his moments, especially when he tries to use inventions he picked from Franz Hopper's journal. They tend to backfire.
  • Mission Control: The resident computer programmer, he's far more useful out of Lyoko.
  • Mr. Exposition: As a computer specialist, he can explain things, in particular the mechanics of Lyoko and the Supercomputer.
  • Nerd Glasses: Jérémie is a computer nerd and is the only member of the group that wears glasses, a pair with round lenses and a black frame.
  • Non-Action Guy: Usually, though to be fair, he is much more useful at the Supercomputer than on Lyoko. Subverted in "Ghost Channel" and in "Maiden Voyage", with a little dose of The Greatest Story Never Told. He himself apparently dislikes going on Lyoko. Of course, he still occasionally ends up fighting against XANA's attack of the day.
  • No Social Skills: Implied; it's confirmed he had basically no friends before forming the Lyoko Warriors (and he only got closer to them because they got involved with Lyoko), and even after he befriended them, his exchanges with them tend to be rather professional and focused on their missions. He gradually gets better as the show goes on, especially after Aelita gets materialized. In the final episode, he is reluctant to shut down the Supercomputer because he fears that without Lyoko to keep them together, he will lose the only friends he ever had.
  • Pair the Smart Ones: With Aelita.
  • Playful Hacker: At first. Character Development gradually strips out the "playful" part.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Aelita kisses him in "XANA's Kiss", and he goes completely statue-like in response.
  • Rapid-Fire Typing: Wild Mass Guessing presumes the keyboard on the Lyoko Supercomputer has a second return key in place of the capslock key. That or Jérémie types at a ridiculously high WPM. Or both.
  • Science Hero: He dislikes going on Lyoko, and it's suggested he is a poor fighter anyway. He makes up for it by being the Supercomputer operator and creating most of the upgrades the Lyoko Warriors use.
  • The Short Guy with Glasses: He's not particularly short, but Yumi, Ulrich, and Odd's hair are all taller than he is. Only Aelita is about his height.
  • The Smart Guy: He's the only one who knows how the Supercomputer works or how to get to Sector Five or materialize Aelita; the list goes on. Doubles as The Leader.
  • Smart People Play Chess: He's seen playing with Ulrich in a couple of episodes.
  • Team Dad: A Bumbling Team Dad, but a Team Dad nonetheless. He's the only one who comes close to Yumi in terms of maturity, even if he does get a little carried away sometimes.
  • Techno Babble: His exposition bits can turn out like this sometimes.
  • Teen Genius: He is the youngest member in the team, yet he can build robots and regularly operate on a nuclear supercomputer most real people would have trouble even making work.
  • Too Clever by Half: Jérémie is so self-assured in his intellect, he thinks he can't possibly make mistakes. Unsurprisingly, this means he makes a great many. "Marabounta", "Temptation", and "Vertigo" are just a few examples of times he's thought he's created the perfect anti-XANA weapon/self power-up/anti-virus, and had it backfire horribly.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: He already tends to be overworking and a bit snappish (especially when he thinks people are wasting time or not focused on the fight), but becomes even more so in Season 4. One example? In "Opening Act", he gets angry when he finds out Aelita wants to audition for the Subdigitals, telling her not to "waste her time" (and in the original French, even says it's stupid to her face), much to her crestfallen hurt.
  • Voice with an Internet Connection: Beyond Mission Control, Jérémie has this role, especially in Season 4 where the heroes are translated close to some supercomputer in various remote places on Earth. Good thing that Everything Is Online.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite his general lack of common sense, he does show a surprising amount of insight for such a young kid.
  • Workaholic: He's completely focused on the fight against XANA, almost to the point of obsession. This causes strife between him and Aelita several times, such as in "Final Mix" and "Music to Soothe the Savage Beast"; she wants to live her new life to the fullest and is angry he won't spend time with her, while he wants to beat XANA and is angry that she won't let him work.

Lyoko Avatar

  • Informed Flaw: Although never seen onscreen, his friends' comments imply either Jérémie's avatar looks weird or he sucks at fighting in Lyoko, if not both.
  • Take Our Word for It: When Ulrich is asked how Jérémie's first performance on Lyoko went: "He was ridiculous..."
  • The Unreveal: Each time he went on Lyoko, it either happened offscreen or had a specific condition that caused him to keep his normal appearance instead of an avatar. Averted in the novels, where his avatar is finally described. It's an elf in green tights similar to Peter Pan.

Aelita (Maya) Stones (Lyoko / Hopper / Schaeffer)

"And just forget about my past, you think that's easy? You didn't spend ten years of your life as some sort of computer software!"

Voiced by: Sophie Landresse (French), Sharon Mann (English), Xóchitl Ugarte (Latin American Spanish), Olga Velasco (European Spanish), Yu Shimamura (Japanese), Beata Wyrąbkiewicz (Polish)

Aelita started out as the Damsel in Distress in the series. Unlike the other characters, she seemed to have originated on Lyoko, and survived there for years. The first season of the show deals with Jérémie and the Team trying to figure out a way to materialize her into the real world. She originally had two special abilities in Lyoko: she could enter the access towers that XANA uses to interface with the real world and shut them down, and she had the ability to morph the virtual landscape around her to create walls, rockslides, etc. Starting with Season 3, she was no longer in danger of being killed if losing all her Life Points. She gained the ability to attack with spheres of energy as well, and obtained wings in Season 4 with her new outfit.

  • Action Girl: Not initially, but she starts developing traits of it in season 2 and fully becomes one starting with season 3.
  • All-Loving Hero: While she gets angry like a normal person, Aelita has the kindest heart in the show. She's the only one of the Lyoko Warriors to forgive William (even though what happened wasn't his fault), and in "Marabounta", she shows pity for XANA's monsters, being unable to watch their deaths at the titular creature's hands. In the novels, her forgiveness even extends to XANA himself.
  • Art Evolution: Starting from season 2, her face is more proportioned to be more human-like, much like the rest of the cast, instead of being an interpretation of her 3D Model seen on Lyoko. She also wears different clothes than her Season 2-4 counterpart, but this is explicitly noted later on in season 3 as she wears those clothes when she first went into the transporter.
  • Badass Adorable: Cute as a button in the real world that later learns the dangerous Energy Field by herself off-screen, a pink energy blast that while unwieldy is very powerful that can One-Hit KO most of XANA's forces without having to hit their XANA eyes, included the Megatank which would normally give the gang a major headache.
  • Benevolent A.I.: Subverted; the others initially assume she is one, but it's later revealed she's human to begin with.
  • Beta Couple: Her relationship with Jérémie is much smoother compared to the tumultuous one of Ulrich and Yumi. Hell, they even kiss from time to time, something Yumi and Ulrich never get to do on-screen (though they do have an Almost Kiss on Lyoko at one point).
  • Break the Cutie: Poor girl just can't catch a break. Aside from the various times where Jérémie almost found a way to materialize her only to fail at the last minute, season 2 ends with The Reveal she wasn't really an Artificial Human, but a real girl whose memory was accidentally erased. It gets so bad she actually ends up trying to kill herself.
  • By the Power of Grayskull!: Transfer: Aelita! Scanner: Aelita! Virtualization!
  • Can't Live Without You: In season 2, XANA manages to ensure that, even if she is outside Lyoko, shutting down the Supercomputer will still result in her death, by removing her latent human memories.
  • Character Development:
    • Lots, to the point that she eventually becomes the show's central protagonist. To be specific, in Season 1, she's stuck in Lyoko and only interacts with the other Lyoko Warriors, behaving as a program becoming more familiar with human emotions. Season 2 takes a darker turn with this, where she's a rather demure and fragile Martyr Without a Cause while adjusting to the real world. From Season 3 onwards, she's a more open and normal Plucky Girl.
    • She also goes through an arc of carving a life for herself in the real world. At first, she clings to her friends, relying on them to provide her with the knowledge she lacks. Over time, Aelita discovers an enjoyment of music, becomes skilled at mixing tunes, and stands her ground on pursuing this hobby. She even becomes a pre-performance DJ for the Subdigitals!
  • Characterization Marches On: For Season One, putting her development aside, she is depicted as a borderline saint and barely emotes beyond being a helpful ally to Jérémie and the Warriors, sometimes functioning as Jérémie's Warrior Therapist during times of stress. Season Two and onward tones these qualities down slightly and gives her nuance such as playfully snarking/taunting Sissi or monsters on Lyoko and not above getting cross at her friends, including Jérémie. Knowing that the original plan was not to make her a real human makes this subtle shift more understandable.
  • Child Popstar: She discovers a talent for mixing music in "Final Mix", which she quickly cultivates. Her talent is so prodigious she wins a contest and catches the attention of the famous band the Subdigitals.
  • Damsel in Distress: She plays this entirely straight in season 1 given that the team's goal is to get her out of the Supercomputer, and is frequently XANA's target. The others have to play bodyguard because she has no weapon other than Creativity, and she dies for real if she loses all her life points. She gets a bit better in season 2, but still finds herself depending upon the other three most of the time. By season 3 she's upgraded to Action Girl status thanks to learning the highly dangerously useful Energy Field.
  • Designated Victim: Very justified, since she is the key to stop XANA from attacking Earth, and Hopper clearly had major plans concerning her and Lyoko. As such, it's only natural for XANA to focus on her, though his reasons change with the situation every season.
  • Disney Death: Happen several times. The specific episodes being "Just in Time", where she's deleted because of a bug in her annex program, "The Key", where the Scyphozoa drains all of her memories, rendering her an empty shell, and "Distant Memory", where she's thrown into the Digital Sea. She's saved by Jérémie the first time thanks to one of his earlier rematerialization experiments, and the others are by her father, Franz.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In season 4, where she dreams of her father's Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Driven to Suicide: At the end of season 2, she tries to commit a Heroic Sacrifice by shutting down the Supercomputer. Jérémie manages to save her just in time.
  • Fetal Position Rebirth: When she's finally de-virtualized, she emerges like this, but laying down. Ironically, unless Jérémie programmed the clothes she was wearing, the aversion of Naked on Arrival should have tipped the Lyoko warriors that she was actually a human girl who had been virtualized a long time ago.
  • Give Geeks a Chance: Jérémie being a geek clearly never was a problem to her. Granted, she's a tad geeky herself.
  • The Heart: She is the team's emotional center, quick to advocate trust and friendship.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Her relationship with Yumi.
  • Honorary Princess: She isn't really a princess, but Odd and the gang likes to call her one. (It ends being an astonishingly adequate nickname after discovering her father is Franz Hopper, who is metaphorically Lyoko's king.)
  • Human Popsicle: Although not through cryonics — she didn't age for 10 years while virtualized inside the Supercomputer.
  • Hidden Buxom: Appears to be surprisingly well-endowed those few times she isn't dressed in heavy, baggy clothing.
  • I Have Many Names: She only has one real name (Aelita Schaeffer), but relied on two different aliases through the series. Her first alias was Aelita Lyoko (in the first season) and her current alias is Aelita Stones.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Princess", used on and off Lyoko too by everyone as an endearing nickname. Likely a reference to the Save the Princess trope started in the 1980s, though considering her father is the creator, a.k.a. "king" of Lyoko, it turns out to be pretty meaningful.
  • Kiss Me, I'm Virtual: Aelita is an A.I. stuck in the virtual world. This doesn't stop Jérémie from falling for her and doing everything he could to materialize her on Earth. Subverted when it is discovered she's in fact human.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: The reason she started out believing she was just an A.I. She gets her memory back at the end of season 2. Season 4 later reveals that she's still missing a few however, such as her actual birthday.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Full-fledged in Seasons 3-4, but there was some present before then.
  • The Load: Especially in Season 1. Grows out of it throughout Season 2, and definitely no longer by Season 3.
  • Love Interest: For Jérémie.
  • Luminescent Blush: More often than the rest of the cast, which only adds to her being The Cutie. Aelita blushes when Yumi calls her pretty and when Yumi stumbles on a "personal joke" between her and Jérémie on what they call the delayed virtualisation program (big fat cheese head).
  • Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter: She's actually Franz Hopper's daughter, and considering his work on Project Carthage and Lyoko, he definitely qualifies for the, "mad scientist" part of the trope.
  • Magical Girlfriend: Downplayed in regards to Jérémie, due to her connection to the virtual world. Of course, outside of Lyoko, where there are no powers, this aspect is moot.
  • Magic Skirt: Justified, at least in the virtual world where skirts aren't necessarily made of fabric. Played straight in the real world with her first outfit, but she's never really in any compromising positions where this comes into play.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: Aelita was often a bit too eager to sacrifice herself in Seasons 1 and 2. Sadly justified in that it would end XANA's menace once for all. XANA even tries to take advantage of this in "Missing Link": he uses the Scyphozoa to steal Yumi's DNA sequence code because he knows that Aelita will transfer hers over to Yumi (stating that "Yumi's place is on Earth"). This leaves Aelita's memory exposed for him to take at will.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is probably a reference to the titular character of the novel by Aleksey Tolstoy, who was also a prominent figure of another world and had a relationship with a lonely scientist.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother is seen in flashback and has been named by Word of God as Anthea, but was kidnapped for unknown reasons by the MiB. It has still yet to be revealed what has become of her.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed for the most part, though unlike most examples, Aelita's the only female member we get to see fully naked in the shower (though we thankfully don't see her breasts), revealing she's just as stacked as Yumi and Sissi thanks to Hidden Buxom covering up her chest. Keep in mind Aelita is actually the youngest member of the group (due to being trapped in Lyoko for 10 years), meaning Aelita is physically 12-13.
  • Naked on Arrival: Averted. When she is materialized on Earth at the end of season 1, she appears fully clothed. This aversion is relevant because it foreshadows the revelation that Aelita isn't an artificial intelligence but a human girl all along.
  • New Transfer Student: How she starts in Season 2 when being enrolled into Kadic Acadeny.
  • No Social Skills: At first in Season 2, she has little to no idea how the real world works. Even after spending time on it, she is still a bit of The Ingenue for a time. Season 3 and onwards however, have her fully shed this trope, and she's shown to be far more sociable than Jérémie.
  • Older Than They Look: Aelita is chronologically 23-24, but ten of those years were spent asleep in Lyoko (and another full year in avatar form), so she looks, acts, and biologically is 12-13. Finally confirmed in "Wrong Exposure", where Jérémie takes advantage of it to prevent Delmas from figuring out her relation to Franz Hopper.
  • Pair the Smart Ones: With Jérémie.
  • Pet the Dog: In the penultimate episode, she's the only Lyoko Warrior who sympathizes with William after he's been freed from XANA, and is willing to stick up for him when the others reject him. It doesn't have any payoff since the others still prevents William from going to Lyoko, and XANA later possesses William one final time while she ends up focusing more on her father, but it's the thought that counts.
  • Pink Means Feminine: The girliest of the group by far, and has an overwhelmingly pink color scheme. Everything she has tends to be pink.
  • Plucky Girl: You'd be surprised that someone this cheery and energetic was trapped in a supercomputer and hounded by an evil program for 10 years.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: A Lighter and Softer example. Aelita is a mysterious girl who serves as Jérémie’s Love Interest and initially appears to be of otherworldly origins as an artificial intelligence pertaining to Lyoko. She possesses pale skin and short, unusually-colored hair (that being pink). She begins the series with No Social Skills, but through Character Development becomes much more normally emotional. Finally, she is revealed to not only have a Dark and Troubled Past of being a human girl who spent a decade virtualized in the Supercomputer, but be the daughter of Lyoko’s creator, Franz Hopper, making her the Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter in much the same way Rei is an adoptive variant to Gendo.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She fits about all the traits associated with this. She's a sweet and good-natured girl most of the time and while her love interest, Jérémie, doesn't have blue hair, he is associated with the color blue. In Season 4, even his sweater matches her color scheme of pink and red.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Season 1 and, to a lesser extent, 2. The only reason why the heroes refuse to shut down XANA is because they are hell-bent on severing her ties to Lyoko.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The reason she fell for Jérémie was because of his persistence in helping and trying to make her happy without seeking thanks or reward.
  • The Sleepless: While in Lyoko, it's impossible for her to sleep.
  • Smart People Play Chess: She's Jérémie intellectual equal, and often plays him in chess.
  • Teen Genius: She rivals Jérémie in that area, though it's unclear how much is natural and how much comes from her spending years as a program.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Yumi's Tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In season 1, Aelita required Odd, Ulrich and Yumi as bodyguards, and her only use is deactivating towers. Out of all 26 episodes of season 1, she only destroys one monster. By season 4, she's the most capable Lyoko Warrior of all — not only does she have Energy Fields, which are more powerful than any other Lyoko weapon (being a Swiss-Army Weapon that can be a shield or a One-Hit Kill on almost any monster without needing to Attack Its Weak Point), she also has wings for flight and an ability that allows her to reshape the very world of Lyoko. It's also worth noting that XANA-possessed Aelita has only ever been defeated once, and even then Aelita had already disposed of Yumi and was only devirtualized when a wayward fan hit her by sheer luck.
  • Undead Tax Exemption: Averted. The Lyoko Warriors have to do the work to create an identity for her (though Jérémie is very good at "arranging" her paperwork), and there are enough holes in it for Sissi to occasionally piece together that something's going on.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Twice, in the form of:
    • Why Did It Have to Be Wolves?: They feature heavily in her recurring nightmares. She thankfully never has to deal with them in the present-day. The same cannot be said for...
    • Why Did It Have to Be the Scyphozoa?: She really catches the Distress Ball whenever it pops in, even in later seasons when she's the most powerful member of the group.

  • Barrier Warrior: Her energy fields can be used to block the lasers of XANA's monsters. When she combines them with her Creativity power, she creates a giant wall to protect the Skid in season 4.
  • Calling Your Attacks: After she gets the ability to use Energy Fields, she calls it by name when shooting one.
  • Deadly Dodging: Her main way of fighting before getting her Energy Fields. An especially notable instance in Episode 39, "A Bad Turn": alone on Lyoko, Aelita manages to get rid of a whole swarm of Hornets/Frelions by flying on the Overboard and having them ram the mountain or each other.
  • Decoy Getaway: Aelita can create short-lived clones of herself to act as decoys while she escapes to safety.
  • Deflector Shields: She can fuse two of her offensive-oriented Energy Fields to create a small shield that can stop a Megatank laser.
  • Distress Ball: Even after becoming an Action Girl, she always panics whenever the Scyphozoa is involved, and ends up getting possessed. This is particularly frustrating in "Wrong Exposure", where she forgets that she has wings, and thus could escape the Scyphozoa by flying away.
  • Dub Name Change: Her Energy Fields were translated as "Energy Balls" for a season in the Spanish dub.
  • Energy Ball: Her main offensive ability, which she gets in Seasons 3.
  • Facial Markings: A red line on either cheek in her Seasons 1-3 avatar.
  • An Ice Person: Whenever Aelita uses Creativity in the Ice Sector. In "Vertigo", she is able to momentarily incapacitate the Scyphozoa by freezing it solid.
  • Lotus Position: Aelita uses this pose when "listening to XANA's pulsations" in Season 1 (and once in season 4).
  • Neuro-Vault: Her memories hold the Keys of Lyoko, which XANA tries to siphon out of her brain with the Scyphozoa in season 2.
  • One-Hit Kill: Technically everyone can one-shot monsters, but only if they Attack Its Weak Point. Aelita's energy fields surround a monster and hit it from every angle simultaneously, allowing her to destroy the monsters (or paralyze some of the stronger ones) even on a glancing blow, making her the most powerful member of the team in terms of pure power. Then XANA-William comes in the picture and is able to tank several of these. Only a fully-charged energy field can instantly get rid of him.
  • One-Woman Wail: How she invokes her Creativity power.
  • Override Command: Code: LYOKO is the command she inputs into towers to take control of them, deactivating them , and allowing Jérémie to start a return to the past.
  • Pointy Ears: Fitting with her elf/angel motif.
  • Psychic Powers: Creativity, which telekinetically reshapes the environment, and Second Sight, which gives her omnipresent awareness of everything in Lyoko.
  • Reality Warper: Downplayed; she can only manipulate Lyoko's territory. However, in "Ghost Channel", Aelita has shown the ability to cause events on Earth much like XANA (she distracted Mr. Delmas and Jim by blowing up pipes), but without needing to use towers. That said, it doesn't reach XANA's level in terms of sheer power.
  • Superpower Lottery: The Annex Program allows Aelita to possess cybernetic artificial intelligence, gives her the ability to read and understand computer files and binary codes, allowing her to access any interface, such as in towers and Sector Five. This is the main reason XANA focuses on Aelita on Lyoko: with the Annex Program, she can deactivate the towers and stop XANA's attacks. While it doesn't comes off as extremely useful in battle, it is still one of the most powerful Lyoko powers due to its versatility, and only William's Super Smoke can compare.
  • Support Party Member: Seasons 1-2. She can't fight, but she's the only person who can deactivate the towers. Her Second Sight is also extremely helpful to the party.
  • Virtual-Reality Warper: Aelita can use her Creativity power in Lyoko to reshape parts of the virtual environment at will, such as creating walls or bridges. She can also enter the towers, "behind-the-scenes" areas where she can input Override Commands that perform administrative actions, such as taking control of a tower back from XANA or outright deleting a section of the world in season 3.

  • The Captain: Of the Skidbladnir.
  • Facial Markings: The red lines of her avatar move down in Season 4, starting from the lower part of her face and stopping where the original marks ended.
  • Flight: A new power she gains, thanks to a pair of energy wings.
  • Hard Light: When "translated" on Earth.
  • Master of All: By this point, Aelita has a long-ranged One-Hit Kill attack, a defense that can block both physical hits and the most powerful XANA monster's attack save for the Kolossus, the ability of flying without a vehicle, and the ability to reshape the very environment. If she were more aggressively or tactically minded, she would probably outwork all the other Lyoko warriors in the battlefield with the sole exception of William. It shows when XANA manages to possess her one last time in "Wrong Exposure", where she manhandles Ulrich, coming very close to devirtualizing him.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Aelita's upgrade came with a pair of "Angel Wings" integrated into her suit.
  • Sensual Spandex: As with all Season 4 avatars.
  • Technopath: Cannot manipulate Earth's landscape when translated. Instead, her Creativity becomes this, allowing her to hack into computers and unlock doors.
  • Winged Humanoid: When she uses her Angel Wings.

Exactly What It Says on the Tin, Aelita whenever she is brainwashed by XANA, which has happened enough for its own section.
  • Achilles' Heel: Her lack of an obvious weapon (Energy Fields being mid-to-long range) meant that she needs to keep at long range, forcing her to be on the evasive in Season 2 and Season 3. Season 4 solves the problem by simply having her steal one of Ulrich's swords.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: She's a major reason XANA won in Season 3, as she destroys 3 sectors. XANA slowly creeping his way to victory leads the Lyoko Warriors to hastily accept William on the team, whose lack of experience provides the program with the final tool it needs to destroy Lyoko.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: A tricks she pulls on Ulrich, blocking one of his katanas (to the boy's non-negligible shock) and taking it away for a proper swordfight.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: She is the result of XANA taking control of Aelita: With a necklace in a Season 2 episode, and the Scyphozoa implanting a virus inside Aelita's brain during Seasons 3 and 4.
  • Characterization Marches On: During "Saint Valentine's Day" and Season 3, she's The Stoic, very rarely reacting more than she has to in regards to the situation at hand. Her possession in Season 4 has her act like a even more sadistic version of XANA-William, yelling and screaming while she attacks, and generally being very deranged.
  • Co-Dragons: She was one of XANA's Dragons in Season 3, the other one being the Scyphozoa, which was needed to bring her out in the first place.
  • Demonic Possession: In her first appearance, XANA tricks Aelita into wearing a necklace that slowly implanted impulses into her mind, bypassing the protection granted by the scanners.
  • The Dragon: She's essentially XANA's in Season 3, being used in order to cut off all access to Sector 5. It fails, but XANA-William finishes the job in "Final Round" by destroying Lyoko.
  • Harmful Healing: By season 4, Jérémie has developed a program to rid Aelita of viruses should the Scyphozoa get to her. However, it also leaves her horribly weak, and she struggles to not pass out while making her way to the tower afterwards. Downplayed in that it does accomplish its main purpose.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: During her sole reappearance in season 4, she steals one of Ulrich's katanas and favors using it in place of her own powers to fight, only using her Energy Fields once.
  • Light Is Not Good: Granted, since XANA never got ahold of her the way he did with William, he never had the chance to give her an Evil Makeover, but considering Aelita's usual colors are pink and white, she counts as this.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: During Seasons 2 and 3, she rarely talks, and is just deadset on her objective, whatever it may be. Season 4 sees her act significantly more psychotic, but the way she fights Ulrich, not giving him any openings and just rushing in for the attack, shows that she's still this.
  • Override Command: Code: XANA, which will delete a surface sector if entered into its Way Tower.
  • Slasher Smile: She gives an absolutely terrifying one in her sole reappearance in Season 4.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: An unusual case, since she's only around if XANA can actually take control of Aelita, but XANA makes much more effective use of Aelita's abilities than she does, spamming Creativity and Energy Fields much more than Aelita's regular usage, proving how unstoppable she would be if she went all out with her powers. It helps that XANA boosts her physical capabilities and strength in the process.
  • Took a Level in Badass: XANA-Aelita in Seasons 2 and 3 preferred to keep away from direct combat in favor of just reaching her intended objective point, but Season 4 sees her disarm Ulrich, steal one of his katanas, and engage in a swordfight with him that she has the advantage over.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: She's remarkably good at adapting to unexpected situations as needed. Convincing Jérémie and trying to charm him into going to Lyoko can't work? Let's have Yumi agree. The Lyoko-warriors catch up to her? Let's use Creativity in various and imaginative ways to deal with them. Ulrich uses her as an hostage against XANA's monsters? Elbow him and take advantage of said monsters fighting Ulrich to reach the Desert Sector way tower. Yumi catches up to her in the Mountain sector? Avoid her attacks and making a run for the tower as soon as there's an opening instead of fighting her again.

William Dunbar

"I'm not the kind of guy who likes to steal the show."

Voiced by: Mathieu Moreau (French), David Gasman (English), Alexei Mayén (Latin American Spanish), Pablo Sevilla (European Spanish), Masaru Uekura (Japanese), Janusz Wituch (Polish)

A transfer student exiled to Kadic Academy in Season 2 for spamming love notes. His primary function during the first half of his tenure is to act as a Romantic False Lead for Yumi and lampshade Ulrich's inability to spit it out in the process. William's assistance in foiling several of XANA's schemes on the real-world side proves critical in Season 3, though, and after he confides to the Team that he is starting to dream about elements of his adventures that should have been erased with the Return to the Past, the Lyoko Warriors reluctantly (but unanimously) take him on as their newest member. It goes downhill from there. Mind-controlled by XANA (and stripped of his higher vocabulary in the process), William spends the majority of Season 4 as the Lyoko Warriors' most consistent virtual threat. He gets better, but the show ends two episodes later, and on kind of a harsh note for him. He hails from Scotland, as his name is based off of Scottish hero William Wallace who's town of Dunbar, Scotland inspired his name.

  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Subverted and Deconstructed. In "Fight to the Finish", the Lyoko Warriors reject his attempt to help them in the final battle, but Jérémie allows him to stay around in case they need back-up. However, he's Xanafied at the exact moment Jérémie was about to send him to Lyoko. Odd and Jérémie subsequently regret rejecting his help, wishing they could've sent him to Lyoko from the start instead.
  • The Atoner: Subverted; he attempts to be this in season 4 finale, but is rejected by the Lyoko Warriors. The best help he ended up providing was to inadvertently save the day in "The Lake" (and even then, it was also because Yumi was around) and distract Sissi in "Fight to the Finish".
  • Badass Normal: Even in the real world, William is no joke. He wiped the floor with his entire Xanafied class in episode 54 "Lyoko Minus One", deactivated a bomb in "The Secret" and defeated, while teleported, Odd and Yumi in "Cold Sweat" without using his powers. If it wasn't for Aelita, he would have sent them back to the Skid.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: With his cocky, childish, excited and downright annoying behavior in "Final Round", you certainly don't expect him to destroy nine Creepers with no effort. There is a reason XANA chose to brainwash him...
  • The Big Guy: He became the strongest Lyoko Warrior by virtue of that really big sword of his, and his special ability. Even though he was Not Himself for almost the entire Season 4.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Unfortunately for him, he was freed from XANA's control, but never got the chance to get his revenge on him and he's kicked out of the group. The best he could do to aid the heroes isn't that much, on top of that (see The Atoner).
  • Blood Knight: Being Odd's foil, this is unsurprising. While it's less present than Odd, William is just as fond of fighting as him. This is best shown in "Final Round", where he's eagerly training in anticipation for his first mission, and later on destroys the Creepers with utter glee on his face.
  • Breakout Character: He debuted as a secondary character in Season 2. Unlike most breakout characters, William started out being considered a pointless ship interference. However, he became more popular in Season 3, where he became a recurring characters often helping the heroes. He ends up joining the team... Before being brainwashed in the season finale by XANA. In Season 4, he's been Promoted to Opening Titles, became a main character and XANA's unwilling Dragon. His popularity ends up skyrocketing as a result.
  • Break the Haughty: After being freed from XANA's control, William is much more subdued, having none of his past bravado as he tries to adjust back to ordinary life. Though bitter about being rejected by the Lyoko Warriors, he seems to understand why, and after XANA is dealt with, just asks Yumi if the group shut down the supercomputer and does not pursue her any further.
  • The Casanova: Completely averted. Yumi calls him one, though he only ever pursues her. That said, he does show himself capable of and willing to seduce other girls — namely Sissi — when the group needs it in "Fight to Finish".
  • Character Development: Starts off as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold trying to seduce Yumi in Season 2, becomes a Stalker with a Crush (even though he actually never stalked her in Season 3) who can be serious when he realizes how dangerous the situation truly is (he didn't realize how bad things were in Final Round, hence why he was cocky), and in his few appearances in Season 4 as himself he matured (leaving Yumi alone when she rejects him again in the last episode and not being angry at her for example, wanting to fight seriously on Lyoko...).
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He starts off as a minor character and a Romantic False Lead for Yumi before becoming the Sixth Ranger to the Lyoko Warriors. And then becoming The Dragon for the remainder of Season 4.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • William defeated his entire xanafied class with ease in "Lyoko Minus One", notably knocking out three of them in one kick. In "A Lack of Goodwill", XANA-William manhandled Jérémie and took down Tamiya with no issue whatsoever. This case is Justified, since as a xanafied person, he's superhuman.
    • He's been on the receiving end several times. The xanafied Mr. Delmas dispatched him with no effort in "Ultimatum", he was quickly taken care of by the zombified Jim in "Attack of the Zombies", the xanafied Mrs. Hertz knocked him out in one blow in "Lyoko Minus One" and he was nearly killed by the xanafied worker in "The Secret".
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: In "Fight to the Finish", XANA-William is the Final Boss on Earth and Yumi and Ulrich must take him on to stop him from harming Jérémie and the supercomputer. While XANA-William utterly manhandles them in what's arguably one of the most brutal No-Holds-Barred Beatdowns of the franchise, they give him a hard time and ultimately stall him long enough for Jérémie and Aélita to finish off XANA for good.
  • Defiant to the End: Even when the zombies drag him away in episode 40, he still tries to put up a fight, punching the zombified Jim in the face.
  • Demoted to Extra: Barring flashbacks, he merely makes a cameo in the novels.
  • Depending on the Writer: William is often used as plot device in several episodes in different and often contradictory ways. As such, this directly affects his character and abilities. For example, he's easily defeated by a bunch of zombies (In "Attack of the Zombies") but then defeats his xanafied classmates with no effort (In "Lyoko Minus One").
  • The Determinator: He never gives up on seducing Yumi, even after all that happened by the end of the show.
  • Final Boss: In "Fight to the Finish", XANA-William is the final threat on Earth, and Yumi and Ulrich must take him on to stop him from harming Jérémie and the supercomputer.
  • Flashback Nightmare: William has dreams about things that should have been erased with the Return to the Past — one of the factors that led to his becoming a Lyoko Warrior.
  • Foil:
    • To Odd. Both can act silly, arrogant and childish, but also deeply care for their loved ones and should not underestimated at all. But while Odd is a Casanova Wannabe, William only loves Yumi. While Odd is probably the weakest Lyoko Warrior in terms of power, William is by far the strongest Lyoko Warrior. Odd is one of the smallest Lyoko Warriors while William is the talliest one. While Odd ended up being accidentally involved in the story (in the prelude), William was recruited. And while Odd is a willing hero, William is an unwilling villain.
    • To Aelita too. While both are powerhouses, must be rescued and materialized on Earth in a season (Aelita in Season 1, and William in Season 4), lack vehicles in the proper sense of the word and single-handedly started a plot (Aelita is critical to the entire story, being the reason Jérémie refuses to shut down the Supercomputer, while William forced the heroes to adapt to a new threat) Aelita is a All-Loving Hero, while William is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. While Aelita is one of the smartest characters of the show, William is at best average in terms of smarts. Aelita's powers revolves around creation, while William's revolves around destruction. No wonder they had trouble getting along on Lyoko in Final Round, even though they're friends on Earth.
    • And of course, to his rival Ulrich. Both are handsome athletic people who have Super-Speed powers on Lyoko, are attracted to Yumi, suffer from phobias (William is afraid of spiders, Ulrich of heights) and have parents often busy with their work. However, Yumi returns Ulrich's feelings towards her, while William's feelings towards Yumi are one-sided. Despite their work, William's parents are Good Parents and very close to their son while Ulrich's parents are neglectful at best and abusive at worst.
  • Good Feels Good: He admits in episode 64 he enjoyed helping out Yumi for no other reason than the fact he enjoyed it.
Let’s just say that in my dream I really enjoyed helping you out…so, why not try it in real life? Might be just as much fun!
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Sadly, after freeing him, all Lyoko Warriors but Aelita (and Jérémie, who just doesn't care) have difficulties forgiving him for what he did under XANA's control (despite Aelita pointing out it wasn't his fault and it could have happened to any of them). It goes as far as when he attempts to redeem himself by helping them, Yumi (Ulrich and Odd to a lesser extent) violently rejects him and refuses to let him go to Lyoko, arguing XANA might seize the opportunity to control him again. Ironically, this is exactly what happens... except XANA is able to control him through a tower because he is still on Earth. Nice job, Yumi!
  • Hope Spot: In episode 40, during the zombie apocalypse, he succeeds in contacting the police and getting them to come to Kadic to help them out. Unfortunately, they come across the gardener, who's unaware of said zombie apocalypse.
  • Irony: He ended up helping the Lyoko Warriors more when he wasn't part of the team than when he actually joined them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rebellious and cocky and really doesn't know how to take no for an answer. He's also brave and laid-back around people other than Ulrich — and even then, he can put aside his rivalry with Ulrich when needed, like giving him some "friendly advice" or listening to orders.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: This is what causes him to end up possessed by XANA; he got too caught up in battling XANA's monsters, and thought he could take on the Scyphozoa... Quite simply put, he couldn't.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: "Makes me totally insane." by his own admission. Not so much in Season 2, but definitely in Season 3.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Completely intentional on his part. This is best shown when he's shirtless in the swimming pool in "Marabounta".
  • New Transfer Student: He got expelled from his old school for spamming love notes.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: When fighting against XANA's control in "The Lake", he inadvertently gave enough time to Aelita to reach the factory and deactivating the tower. In others words, he did what he was supposed to do as a hero: he (and Yumi) saved the day. He's the only one who ever fought against XANA's control and it's thanks to Yumi he briefly snapped out.
  • One Hit Poly Kill: In episode 54, "Lyoko minus one", William effortlessly defeated three of his Xanafied classmates with only a wooden stick and one kick. This is even more badass knowing that William was only a secondary character back then.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: In season 4, when he becomes a major villain.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Odd often nicknames him that, and he's right. He is a tall, dark-haired and very handsome boy.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • When giving a piece of advice to Ulrich in "Marabounta" , he's also clearly criticizing him for not having confessed to Yumi yet:
William: Uh-uh, no, that'd be too easy, Ulrich. Let me tell you what's wrong around here. My being around Yumi forces you to ask yourself a question, a tough question that you can't answer. Here's a piece of friendly advice: go and talk to Yumi, from the heart. Or else, one day, I will! And then I really will be your problem!
    • Surprisingly, in "The Secret", not even Yumi is spared when he calls her out for not trusting him:
William: Maybe it’s just because they trust me! Not like... [refers to Yumi]
  • Recurring Character: In Season 3, William goes from a mere secondary character to a recurring one, with several of his appearances severely impacting the overall story. By the time of the season finale, he becomes a Lyoko-warrior, and shortly after is turned into XANA's Dragon. This leads him to become a main character in Season 4. A US Season 3 DVD Box-art lampshades William's newfound importance in the series by featuring him alongside the main cast.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: In the finale. He isn't present when the Supercomputer is shut down, but he seems to have at least managed to return to being on civil terms with Yumi. He is still bitter about being rejected, though.
  • Romantic False Lead: To Yumi. In his first appearance, she seems to give back some of his feelings, but she gets annoyed by his Stalker with a Crush attitude as the show goes on. By season 3, it's made quite clear he never had any chance with her to begin with.
  • Sixth Ranger Traitor: Joins the Lyoko Warriors at the end of Season 3, only to be possessed by XANA on his first mission and end up as The Dragon for Season 4.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Subverted. While he never actually stalks Yumi, his approach to her gives off this vibe in Season 3. He's harmless, but annoyingly persistent. He gets better by the end of Season 4, however.
  • Undying Loyalty: He could have revealed the secret the second he was thrown out of the team. He chose not to, out of sheer loyalty to the team.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: A few times, all of which act to his detriment.
    • He thinks he and the school are just dealing with a zombie apocalypse in episode 40. The idea he's dealing with a sociopathic AI flies over his head in spite of the Lyoko-warriors' best explanations. This leads him to end up becoming an unwitting antagonist to the Lyoko-warriors, trying to prevent them from getting out of the cafeteria for their own safety.
    • Twice in Season 3: First he assumes that the Lyoko Warrior's enemy is some gory horror monster, and thus underestimates a Xanafied construction worker (something he takes back when said worker nearly sends him and and Yumi off the side of the Factory bridge), and later on, when properly virtualized, assumes that Lyoko works akin to a video game, not helped by how easily the Creepers go down. Then the Scyphozoa arrives, and William, underestimating it, is soon captured and turned into XANA's latest minion.

Season 3 Lyoko Avatar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_20190926_220527_7.png
Season 3 Avatar.

  • The Ace: His avatar comes with a ridiculously powerful and versatile weapon, and like Ulrich, he seems to have not one, but two powers, and highly useful ones (super sprint and levitation).
  • Attack Reflector: As a good guy, he uses his Zweihander once to reflect a Creeper's laser back at it, destroying the monster instantly.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Him being Xanafied is what allows XANA to destroy Lyoko and win in the third season.
  • BFS: As a good guy, this trope is Deconstructed. His sword has exaggerated proportions, even by Zweihänder standards. However, he has trouble carrying it as a consequence. The trope is reconstructed upon his xanafication, as XANA gave him improved strength to be able to easily wield it even with one hand.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Played with. As a good guy, William dishes one to nine Creepers, who don't even touch him; but he is on the receiving end once the Scyphozoa shows up to brainwash him. Once under XANA's control, he once again has no problem offing all the Lyoko warriors by himself.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Wiliam cut several Creepers in half and, once brainwashed, he does the same to Ulrich with an upward slash.
  • In the Back: In his debut appearance, William devirtualized all the Lyoko Warriors (except for Aelita) with a back slash while they are distracted.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He defeats Yumi by running the full length of his sword into her back.. A deleted scene even shows him doing so on-screen.
  • Light Is Good: His avatar is as white as snow, and until his xanafication, he was nothing but well-meaning, if inexperienced and hot-headed.
  • Light Is Not Good: Upon his xanafication, he still retains his original white avatar. The trope is only subverted after Lyoko's destruction.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Played for Drama. Not knowing how dangerous the Scyphozoa actually is and its abilities is one of the reasons he ended up xanafied.
  • One-Handed Zweihänder: Subverted. When he tries to use only one hand to wield his Zweïhander in "Final Round", he fails and wobbles because the sword is too heavy, thus he has to manage in the end by using two. Played straight once he's xanafied, however, as he gains the necessary Super-Strength to do so.
  • One-Hit Kill: His BFS is capable of destroying multiple Creepers in a single blow. Lyoko Warriors aren't exempt from it, sadly.
  • Power Floats: He levitates twice when he's Xanafied.
  • Spin Attack: William's combat proficiency is showcased when he does a running spin attack with his sword to destroy multiple Creepers simultaneously. However, it is notably sloppy and left him dizzy for a few seconds.
  • Superpower Lottery: Maybe not to an exaggerated degree, given that we don't get to see his entire powerset nor how he would handle monsters that aren't Creepers before being xanafied, but even by then, he already has a massively powerful One-Hit Kill weapon and might be a Lightning Bruiser to boot.
  • Super-Speed: Implied. He quickly joins Yumi when she's destroying Creepers, seemingly using Super Sprint. However, he only used that technique once, as he later gained the much more versatile Super Smoke. Played straight in the social game however, as he does have the Super Sprint.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: We never get to know the extent of his actual skills on Lyoko, as he is Xanafied only minutes after being virtualized. However, all he needs is one blow to destroy a Creeper (granted, they are rather fragile anyways). Or a Lyoko Warrior. Ultimately, he doesn't seem to have too much strategy, and though we never see how he would handle other monsters, it can be assumed that while he is strong, he doesn't have enough finesse and speed, as even if he did have Super Sprint as a power, his enormous sword would still theoretically weight him down.
  • We Hardly Knew You: Subverted. He didn't kick the bucket, but we don't know (and probably never will) his powers in his original avatar, this avatar appeared in only one episode (barring reused scenes in later episodes) and he was only using it as himself for 10 minutes.
  • What Could Have Been:invoked The Social Game implies that William had Ulrich's Super Sprint (which he may have used when Xanafied in "Final Round" to finish off Yumi), further emphasizing his rivalry with Ulrich.

Season 4 Lyoko Avatar

Season 4 Avatar. Click here to see his teleported appearance

  • All Your Powers Combined: His Super Smoke power allows him to move as fast as Ulrich and fly like Aelita, and can be used the same way as Yumi's telekinesis. Not to forget his Sword Beams are as fast as Odd's Laser Arrows. He's also shown having a power of Far Sight similar to Aelita's power to see through illusions on Lyoko and can manipulate technology in the real world like Aelita.
  • Anti-Villain: He's not evil per se, he just happens to be Brainwashed and Crazy.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In the official Code Lyoko comic "The Best of Both Worlds", he apologizes to Yumi for devirtualizing her.
  • Attack Reflector: His buckler-like bracer allows him to not only block close-range attacks, but also to reflect some long-ranged attacks too. Odd finds out the hard way in "Guided Missile".
  • Battle Cry: "FOR XANA!"
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He may not have won the war, but he won most of the battles. And when he did, it was devastating.
  • Badass in Distress: One of the main plot points of Season 4 is to save him, an extremely powerful newbie, from XANA's clutches.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: XANA's possession makes him more than a little unhinged.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: While under XANA's control, he tends to behave like a stereotypical villain (if he actually talks), taunting the heroes and laughing all the while. A rare example that doesn't diminish his threat level, since he's quite capable of hurting the heroes regardless.
  • Cool Sword: He uses a Final Fantasy-style Buster Sword.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: An expert of this. While he is sometimes on the receiving end, he has defeated — often brutally — the heroes a lot of times, to the point of having devirtualized them many more times (at least twice as much) than they devirtualized him.
  • Dark Is Evil: His entire outfit is corrupted black to fit his Brainwashed and Crazy status. Even his sword, which looked just like a regular-but-massive sword in Season 3, becomes almost demonic, with black tendrils and XANA's eye on the hilt.
  • Deadly Dodging: In episode 86, he dodges both Aelita's Energy Field and Odd's Laser Arrow by ducking. The Energy Field harmlessly flows above him, continues its course, and hits Odd in the chest, devirtualizing him.
  • The Dragon: He becomes XANA's top enforcer, issuing orders to the monsters and overall offering a much bigger threat than them.
  • The Dreaded: His sheer power frightens the heroes even when they win. This is best shown by Jérémie's Oh, Crap! reaction in "Cold Sweat" when William is teleported.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Subverted. He doesn't actually kick the bucket, but in "Down to Earth" (the last episode where XANA-William is fought on Lyoko), he manages to defeat Ulrich one last time before Odd finishes him off. The Bad Guy Wins even when he loses.
  • Enemy Summoner: He can summon a Manta no matter where he is, either using it as a flying vehicle or as a distraction against the Warriors.
  • Evil Costume Switch: After being possessed, his original white attire is replaced by one that is Red and Black and Evil All Over.
  • Facial Markings: An Eye of XANA sometimes flashes on his forehead.
  • Fetal Position Rebirth: At the end of Season 3, XANA saves him from death after Lyoko is destroyed, and he's seen floating above the void in this position.
  • Fighting from the Inside: In the French version, he attempts this during "The Lake", where he tries to fight off XANA's control, but fails. In the English version of the same episode, Yumi mentioned that he actually, if only for a while, succeeded in snapping out of XANA's control.
  • Forced Sleep: One of the many applications of his Super Smoke. William can force it into other avatars' airways, causing them to pass out. This is used often against Aelita, making her helpless and unable to fight back as he transports her to be thrown into the Digital Sea.
  • Genius Bruiser: Heavily Downplayed. While William generally prefers to attack the Lyoko-warriors directly (which can explain a couple of his defeats against the Lyoko-warriors), he can at a couple moments settle for more subtle strategies, and the results can reach near-devastating levels for the Lyoko-warriors.
    • Both times where he pretends to be freed from XANA's control nearly end badly for the Lyoko-warriors, with Odd only managing to save the day at the last moment.
    • In "The Lake", he waits for Aelita inside the activated tower. When Yumi ends up inside instead, XANA-William kicks her out of it and proceeds to curb-stomp her. Only the good William and Aelita's respectives interventions prevent XANA from completely winning.
    • In "A Lack of Goodwill", he pulls a Xanatos Speed Chess (see his entry) to melt the Supercomputer, defeats Clone William by deactivating his tower, and only Aelita's last-minute intervention saves the Supercomputer from destruction.
    • In "Down to Earth", he uses Super Smoke to get away from Ulrich and leaving him to be crushed by the Kolossus. Odd manages to devirtualize and free him from behind, preventing the mission from ending in total failure for the Lyoko-warriors.
  • Hard Light: His virtual avatar is "translated" to Earth in the episode "Cold Sweat".
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: William has a tendency to attack his enemies from behind and send them to the Digital Sea. As such, his defeats in "Down to Earth" and "The Lake" are quite ironic: Odd devirtualizes him from behind in the former and Aelita sends him to the Digital Sea in the latter.
  • Hulk Speak: His usual speech when under XANA, though he is quite capable of speaking in complete sentences. It's just that, like with most of XANA's forces, he rarely has reason to talk.
  • Hyde Plays Jekyll: Does it twice to trick Aelita early on in his possession (the first time was when he returned as XANA's new minion, and the second time was him playing off a failed program to free him from XANA).
  • Knight of Cerebus: While XANA was already a scary and dangerous threat, the series were otherwise pretty light-hearted. But the second William is xanafied, things takes an ever darker turn, because of how dangerous and skilled William is.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The first time William devirtualizes Odd, he does so by firing a Sword Beam while the latter has his back turned to him. In "Down to Earth", Odd repays the favour by shooting William from behind while he is too busy gloating.
  • Made of Iron: Can take a ridiculous amount of punishment in season 4, owing to a larger reserve of Hit Points, requiring several strikes from Yumi's fans and Odd's arrows or a fully charged-up Energy Field from Aelita to be taken down.
  • Manipulative Bastard: When Xanafied, he pretends to be his good self twice (it's ambiguous in a third case, "The Lake" — it's likely he was actually himself —, so it won't be listed here). Unlike XANA's regular tricks, the Lyoko Warriors (more precisely Aelita in the second case) fall for it. To his credit, he is a lot better at being genuine than any polymorphic clone.
  • Mark of the Beast: The Eye of XANA has been engraved on his outfit, his sword and his brain (which can only be seen when it occasionally shines through his forehead).
  • Master of All: To a ridiculous degree. He not only has the most powerful and versatile hand-to-hand weapon of the Lyoko Warriors (which basically one-shots monsters and avatars alike with a swing and can even shoot Razor Wind), but he also has a special ability that turns him invulnerable and allows him to do everything his friends can do without any drawback. And if it is not enough, he also possesses a buckler-like bracer to deflect and return physical attacks. Should we mention that he is the only Lyoko Warrior that can survive inside the Digital Sea?
  • Nonchalant Dodge: Even when not using his Super Smoke, he's a master of dodging with minimal movements, to better tease his opponents.
  • No-Sell: Anyone who falls in the Digital Sea suffers a Fate Worse than Death. However (due to his Super Smoke), it has no effect whatsoever on William, who even lives inside it while Xanafied.
  • One-Handed Zweihänder: Unlike the good William, XANA-William plays straight this trope. While he is often seen using his two hands to uses his Zweïhander, he has no problem using it with only one hand.
  • One-Hit Kill: Almost all of his successful attacks, owing to his BFS.
  • Power Floats: While XANA is controlling him, he has the ability to levitate.
  • Psychic Powers:
    • Telekinesis — he's demonstrated the power to move things by extending a bit of his black smoke (including himself for levitating).
    • Far Sight — he can use a red-tinted telescopic vision to quickly locate his enemies on Lyoko.
  • Sensual Spandex: Much more so in Season 4.
  • Summon to Hand: He can do this with his sword, allowing him to turn the tide of battle when it looks like he's at a disadvantage due to being disarmed.
  • Superpower Lottery:
    • Super Smoke is by far the best and most versatile Lyoko power ever to be granted to any character. Its uses include intangibility, super speed, telekinesis, flight, a projectile that immobilizes William's victim for an easy kill, and the ability to survive in the Digital Sea. Also, receiving critical damage causes the power to activate on its own and warp the boy back to XANA, essentially preventing materialization (and thus keeping the boy under the program's control).
    • XANA-William also has the Annex Program like Franz Hopper and Aelita, which can turn the tide of an entire battle. See Aelita's Superpower Lottery for more information on the Annex Program.
  • Super Smoke: The Trope Namer. He can turn into a cloud of black smoke (reminiscent of XANA's specters on Earth, certainly no coincidence). This allows him to move very quickly on Lyoko, on par with Ulrich's Super-Speed, to fly and to phase through attacks.
  • Super-Strength: It's implied he has, as he now can lift high his heavy sword with a single hand.
  • Sword Beam: Can fire these Razor Wind-style out of his Zweihander
  • Sword Drag: Though, if you had a sword that big, you'd probably drag it as well. It is more notable before he is Xanafied, as he lacks the strength to properly wield it.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: Whenever one of his two themes starts playing, you know he's about to kick some serious ass.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After his possession, he goes from an annoying rival to Ulrich to a badass villain.
  • Unskilled, but Strong:
    • Averted when it comes to direct combat. William mostly uses his Super Smoke and his sword, but he also has Razor Wind, an Attack Reflector, and the Annex Program.
    • Being at the command of XANA's monsters on top of it gives him extra firepower... but while he has quite a bit of raw power, he's a bit weak on the strategy side, generally preferring to directly attack instead of using more complex strategies. Best seen when he's using the Rorkal, which is only on the same level as the other Nav-Skids, and with none of his Superpower Lottery to help him out such as Super Smoke. He's easily outmaneuvered the two times he utilizes it.
  • Virtual-Reality Warper: Like Aelita, it's a very downplayed case. He's able to take over towers like Aelita and XANA, and he possessed Jérémie's clone and interrupted Odd and Aelita's translation in doing so. However, again, it isn't anything close to what XANA, and even Aelita can do. He can't change the environment on Lyoko, to boot. On Lyoko Replikas at least, he is able to take control of towers by entering them. He does attempt and succeed in influencing one without entering it early on in "Double Take", but Jérémie was able to hold him off several times thanks to gaining greater control over Lyoko, and thus he does not attempt it again.
  • Voice of the Legion: As is standard with XANA possessions, he has his own voice accompanied by a demonic echo. His French voice is even better.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: In "A Lack of Goodwill", when his clone defeats him and prevents him from directly destroying the Supercomputer by sending him in the elevator and activating it, XANA-William goes to the computer room and instead attempts to melt-down the Supercomputer by bugging its cooling system. He also pulls another one in "Down to Earth", when, at Ulrich's mercy, he uses his Super Smoke to evade him just before the Kolossus steps on Ulrich and devirtualizes him.

Élisabeth (Elizabeth) "Sissi" Delmas

"I'm the star, the diva of the school!"

Voiced by: Carole Baillien (French), Jodi Forrest (English), Christine Flowers (English, four episodes in Season 1), Gaby Ugarte (Latin American Spanish, Seasons 1-2), Adriana Núñez (Latin American Spanish, Seasons 3-4), Cristina Yuste (European Spanish), Koharu Takeda (Japanese, Seasons 1-2), Mihoko Hijiri (Japanese, Seasons 3-4)

The spoiled daughter of Kadic Academy principal Jean-Pierre Delmas, Sissi was shown in the prequel to actually be one of the original Lyoko-warriors, only to be kicked out of the team shortly after for revealing the secret. From there, she became more or less the Lyoko-Warriors' bully, albeit not a heartless or always unhelpful one. Her close association with them, for good or for ill, basically makes her an honorable mention to the group.
