To-do list:
- Split the trope in the following ways:
- Split off a trope for “deep voices signaling an authority figure" (unisex)
- Split off a trope for “deep voices signaling a physically strong character" (unisex)
Badass Baritone is supposed to denote a character who is tough and "badass" by giving them a deep voice. However, Like other Badass tropes, It became a ZCE magnet, and a few examples attracted some gushing especially in regards to the actors/voice actors that portray such characters.
Here are the results from my Wick Check: (Thanks Yindee for the organization help!)
- Valid- (7/52)
- No mentions of the character being a badass- (11/52)
- ZCE- (24/52)
- Maybe/Not sure- (10/52)
Fortunately, There are 2 solutions I can think of:
- Disambiguate with other deep voice related tropes (Contralto Of Danger, Evil Sounds Deep, Power Makes Your Voice Deep etc.).
- Retool the trope to signify deep voices with masculine characters (Much like how Manly Facial Hair was retooled from Badass Beard and Badass Mustache) as well as yard it for deep voices symbolizing a leader/authoritarian figure.
Wick check:
As brought in here Badass Baritone has a lot ZCEs, Possible Misuse (Its supposed to denote a tough character via deep voice), among others. So I'll check if there's an overarching problem with it.Gonna play the eenie meenie miney mo game with this

- Hololive Holostars Japan Generation Three (Oga Aragami)/Badass Baritone: Has one of the deepest (if not the deepest) voices among the Holostars. This is heavily abused during Oga's cover of Love Live!'s 'Snow Halation' during a collab singing session. He later mentions during a late-night talk stream that because his voice is naturally low, it can be difficult for people to hear him clearly, which causes him to raise his voice, which in turn spooks people. - Transformers Prime Autobots/ Badass Baritone: Comes with being voiced by Michael Ironside. (Ultra Magnus) ZCE
- Like a Dragon: Kazuma Kiryu/ Badass Baritone: Takaya Kuroda, an actor with a notably deep voice, plays Kiryu with pure, unadulterated badass. He also uses it to great effect whenever he sings. Darryl Kurylo's no slouch in this regard, either. Maybe valid
- Splinter Cell: Fisher Family (Sam Fisher)/ Badass Baritone: He's one of the most lethal men on the planet, and he's voiced by Michael Ironside in almost all appearances. His distinct low growl is often the last thing his opponents ever hear. Also counts for Daniel Beretta in the European French version. Maybe valid (Note: I combined it with the subbullet so I won't get confused during counting)

- Transformers Prime Autobots/ Badass Baritone: Peter Cullen's voice has only gotten more deep over the years, and even more badass.(Optimus Prime) Not Sure
- Transformers Prime Autobots/ Badass Baritone: He's got a deep voice and can fight with the best of them. (Cliffjumper) Maybe Valid
- Punch-Out!!/Badass Baritone: The Wii version gives him an impressively deep voice to make him even more intimidating. (Mr. Sandman) Maybe
- Possible solutions:
- Disambiguate with other deep voice related tropes (Contralto Of Danger, Evil Sounds Deep, Power Makes Your Voice Deep etc.).
- Retool the trope to signify deep voices with manly characters (Much like how Manly Facial Hair was retooled from Badass Beard and Badass Mustache) as well as yard it for deep voices symbolizing a leader/authoritarian figure.

Yes, that would be one possible misuse; Fernando's mention of The Leader misuse would be another.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Is this a unisex trope?
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI double-checked, and the second paragraph on Badass Baritone states females can also qualify (though male examples are more common).
Both upvoted options explicitly say "unisex".
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanupoh, I just went with what I searched online regarding baritone
She/Her | Currently cleaning Char CloneTo be clear, that bit was a unilateral addition back in 2017.
I'm fine with it being a unisex trope, I haven't actually been paying attention to the crowner and that's on me, but it just doesn't seem like there's that many female examples in the wild unless they're exaggerated to seem manly.
Edit: Fixed my link

Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessYeah, I think the mezzo is the female equivalent of the baritone. The question is, if Badass Baritone is unisex, is Contralto Of Danger really its Distaff Counterpart? Or, if that change was unilateral, should it be removed because it potentially affects the trope's relationship with Contralto Of Danger?
My personal feeling is that it does make sense for the trope to be unisex, and perhaps we need to revisit the trope relationship (sisters, perhaps, rather than counterparts).

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Now that I think of it, Contralto Of Danger would probably have some overlaps with the second option, but at this point I think it would either need own wick check and TRS, or a description tweak to emphasize on "danger" part. I'm personally not comfortable changing Contralto Of Danger without knowing the examples.

TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup(x3) Okay, I didn't know that, thanks. EDIT: I guess it's Always Male then.

Just a heads up, since there are two holidays coming up soon, I'm not going to hook any new crowners until January 2, and any currently hooked crowners will not be called until then. In addition, consensus will not be called via posts until then.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Three holidays coming up in the Commonwealth (including Boxing Day) anyways.
Kirby is awesome.to all (sans the "a manly male character with a deep voice" one).
Same
Kirby is awesome.Calling in favor of the following:
- Split off a trope for “deep voices signaling an authority figure" (unisex)
- Split off a trope for “deep voices signaling a physically strong character" (unisex)
Are we handling these through TLP or sandboxes? Either would work.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.TLP sounds good to me. Once we got the trope names, I’ll make the TLPs myself. Though since this is my first time writing a trope, any help is appreciated.
She/Her | Currently cleaning Char Clone+1 TLPing because only 7 correct examples aren't enough to launch 2 tropes on their own.
I can lend a hand.
big thanks
She/Her | Currently cleaning Char CloneThirded for TLP.
Fourthed.
For name ideas: Deep Voice Of Authority and Tough Sounds Deep?

she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportDid these get TLPed yet?
Vehicle-Based Characterization | Grief-Induced Split | Locker MailI don't think anyone TL Ped them yet.
Macron's notesI should also note that I have exams coming up next week so I might be busy. I'll try and pitch in when I can though. Also, I' waiting for a name crowner before I TLP.
She/Her | Currently cleaning Char CloneWhatever we rename it to, let's lose the word "baritone". Baritone is the most common male voice range, there's nothing special about it.
Edited by AkivaraPrime on Jan 26th 2023 at 4:25:11 AM
Actually, it seems like we have an entire vocal range of tropes that are nominally specific to opera and musical theatre - Tenor Boy, Badass Baritone, Basso Profundo, Innocent Soprano, Alto Villainess, and Contralto Of Danger. I remember enough about opera to think that in that context there's probably a valid trope there, but I also discovered this by running across a character page full of Tenor Boy ZCEs for a non-theatrical work so I have some concerns about how the others are used now too.
The Revolution Will Not Be Tropeable
Crown Description:
Badass Baritone's tropeworthiness has been questioned, but splitting off specific concepts has been suggested. What should be done with Badass Baritone?
But what about making the trope unisex, Isn’t Baritone about the second lowest male voice in theater?
